Suparn Verma on Feroz Khan

Posted in the good on April 30, 2009 by Satyam

Feroz Khan was many things to many people — cowboy, rockstar, star, actor, director, producer, friend and lover. To me, he was a mentor, a father figure and a friend. The fact that I co-wrote Janasheen or that he acted in my directorial debut, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, is co-incidental.

“The polling station was at Jamna Bai School in JVPD Scheme, Juhu. The school where Abhishek and Shweta used to go in the early years of study in India and Mumbai. It was nostalgic to be in its precincts again. But it was madness to be outside it after having cast the vote. The media, both electronic and print and radio descends upon you like a ravenous beast, salivating at the mouth for the delicious meal they wish to devour that very instant.”

After the furore that was raised over the apology of a beard that Akshay Kumar sported as a Sikh in Anees Bazmi’s Singh Is Kinng, Akshay Kumar is taking no chances.

For the role of the real-life Sardarji who sailed in the fateful ship named Kamagata Maru from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1914, Akshay is taking no chances.

The Abhishek Monster!

Posted in the good on April 29, 2009 by Satyam

Abhishek is (and to get a bit theoretical here) the clearest example of the ‘monstrous real’ in contemporary Bollywood and when one thinks about central actors perhaps the only one. Because Abhishek is indeed the ‘monster’ in contemporary Bollywood. Read more »

“Abhishek won a recognition and left for Delhi. NDTV nominated him for the best Brand representative and rewarded him at a ceremony, for his campaign for IDEA Cellular and Motorolla. He seemed happy about it, as did his clients. And we feel happy for him.”
“There has been talk among certain media of wanting to carry my blog in their paper. That I come to an understanding with them that I allow them to publish it exclusively. The deal being that the blog shall, as a result of the vast circulation of the paper, give me and my posts a larger reach to the people of the country.

Movement or Mise-en-scene? (Updated)

Posted in the good on April 29, 2009 by Satyam

As a personal preference it is indeed true that I am greatly fascinated by how movement within the frame divides up screen space. A classic example for me would be something like the movement of an army in a Kurosawa battle scene but also a Jancso masterpiece like the Roundup. Specially with the latter you get really ‘blank space’ which is then carved up again and again throughout the film. This is very different of course from the complicated mise-en-scene of a Mizoguchi (say Story of the Late Chrysanthemums) which goes hand in hand with the long take. Read more »

Karan Johar has done it again. After casting Kajol and Kareena Kapoor for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, way back in 2001, he’s got the two talented actresses again for his forthcoming venture. “Airports are a busy market these days. And airline staff ready to offer generous help in getting you comfortably on a flight are most endearing and kind. Kind enough at times to walk you past long lines of others in a queue. It embarrasses me to do that. I would rather follow protocol and discipline, but the staff is persistent.”

Porn star Sasha Grey in Soderberg’s ‘Girlfriend Experience’

Shot in 16 days with a cast of non-professional actors and a crew of barely a dozen, The Girlfriend Experience is Steven Soderbergh’s 20th feature in as many years. Recently, the prodigiously industrious film-maker has yomped from the tentpole glitz of the Ocean’s franchise through the strategic and tactical challenges of an ambitious Che Guevara diptych into this, his latest shoestring experiment. Shah Rukh Khan is slated to replace Aamir Khan in Reema Kagti’s next. Reportedly, Aamir Khan had a fall-out with his friends Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani over terms for their next film. Aamir, apparently, demanded a whopping fee and a sizeable percentage in the profits.

Method In Madness

Along with the fact that Hindi cinema seems to fall in a rut of its own ever so often, the other major disappointment comes from the fact that unlike in the West, film journalism in India languishes in a kind of ignominious state.
The electronic media today thrives on minute-to-minute film gossip, displaying a sort of obnoxious aggression that has never been seen before. The paparazzi culture exists all over the world but in India, it seems to be blurring lines, leaving precious little space to any sort of analysis or thought.

In Memoriam — Feroz Khan

‘Once in a blue moon, kabhi kabhie…’ (on Ghai’s Vishwanath)

Posted in the good on April 28, 2009 by Satyam

vishvanath
This remains my favorite among all of Ghai’s films. This was his second film as director, the first being (also with Shatrughan Sinha) Kaalicharan, itself a very engaging masala effort. But Vishwanath is a camp classic which is also at the same time a rather dark vendetta theme with a whole (and rather disturbing) gallery of rogues led by the redoubtable and always show stealing Premnath. There was a whole tradition of Leone and (perhaps even more than this) Corbucci inspired ‘Westerns’ made in Bombay in the 70s, many of which starred the recently deceased Feroz Khan. Read more »
