Aamir, Deepika clash at badminton!

On Sunday evening, Deepika Padukone and dad Pakash Padukone played a doubles badminton match against Aamir Khan and Aparna Popat, at the annual tournament for the Padukone Academy run by the one-time badminton champion.

Even though the actress lost the match against Aamir, Deepika believes it’s the sportsmanship that won at the end of the day. In her words, “I know that Aamir plays badminton at the Khar gym. He’s extremely fit and a great player. It was an incredible experience to play opposite him.”

Deepika who’s extremely passionate about badminton adds that she always enjoys pairing with dad on the court, “Even after so many years dad is such a driving force and an inspiration for badminton enthusiasts.

I remember in the older days when he would train in Bangalore there were no high roof courts, so he would play in shaadi mandaps. From that day to having his own badminton academy he’s come a long way.”

The actress grabs every opportunity to promote any kind of sport activity. “I have always been a champion of fitness and well being. I think badminton is a great sport for anyone who wants to increase his stamina and fitness level.”

Won’t make a good onscreen pair – he’ll need high heels

  3. I hate the way Aamir is mocked continuously for his lack of height. I know that such comments are not meant to be taken seriously—but it happens so often on messageboards , that the joke stops being one, simply remains a bit of harmless meanness–emphasis on meanness. And somebody actually came on to Aamir’s blog last night and wrote a comment suggesting to Aamir very seriously that he should try out this institute in Germany, where they increase your height by 4 inches. I wanted to retort that this rude commenter should go to an institute and and broaden his/her mind—but I let it go.

Aamir has survived two decades in showbiz despite his stick out ears and short height. Blogger fans have met him in Bangalore early this year and come away charmed by his quietly intelligent persona. A couple of them commented that the face is so dazzling, the eyes so brown and warm, that the shortness did not register. He has used the cards he has been dealt and emerged a winner. He needs to be applauded, not mocked.

    • Well he’s done rather well for a guy who supposedly has height issues!

    • Aamir is definitely poked at for his supposed height issues, and I’m guilty of that above. But I’m really speaking in a relative sense here. Deepika is an Amazon, and I’d seriously be hard-pressed to find a Hindi actress in this cinema’s history who is as physically imposing as she. Compared to her, even someone like Abhishek might come off looking “smaller” let alone Aamir. SRK certainly seemed “dwarfed” (and I don’t mean this in pure size, but physicality – an important distinction) in some frames of OSO.

      • just saw your ’stilts’ comment. LOL!

Didn’t realize Deepika had that sort of bone structure. Need to look more closely!

      • Deepika is indeed an Amazon. But in height she is the same as Sonam Kapoor or Shilpa Shetty. I think both Deepika and Sonam are 5′9 or 5′10 (175-178 cm). That is vastly tall when many actors in Bollywood are shorter than that or just barely reach that height. I recollect all the Khan actors are shorter than 5′8 or 5′9.

Abhishek at 6′3 (191cm) is one of the vastly few actors who can look good paired with extra tall actresses like Shilpa, Sonam, and Deepika. I think Abhishek and Deepiak would make a fine and interesting onscreen pair. They looked good in a few photos I saw of them at this year’s Filmfare awards. Aamir is vastly vertically challenged. But nobody is perfect. I’m in agreement that he has done exceedingly well and used to full effect his assets.

        • Just for the record Sonam is 5′10, Deepika is 5′8.5 and Shilpa is 5′8.

          • That’s remarkable. Sonam doesn’t seem taller than Deepika. perhaps as GF and Eire have suggested it’s the bone structure.

          • I doubt Deepika is 5′8.5. I saw a pciture of her standing with Sonam and they were about the same height.

Supposedly SRK is 5′8 and Deepika is definitely a couple inches taller than him.

She looked as tall as Askshay in CCTC.

    • The only weak link in this very articulate argument is ‘Aamir’ himself. He is not comfortable with his short height and have been trying to disguise it by wearing hidden plateform and tricky shots. One has never found him shorter than many real ife taller actresses in any movie! Him, Salman and SRK are never found without shoes even in or on the beach/bed! One can’t defend the person when it’s self inflicted.
Even in these photos he seems to have his hidden plateform in place!!!

well said LS, and why can’t aamir-deepika be paired together? If a Cheeni Kum with a difference of 30 yrs. age in the lead-pair can be a HIT, a height difference of 4 inches between a lead-pair can also produce a HIT esp. when we have two good actors…..aamir is known to do things differently….so why not?

  5. I like Deepika; liked her in OSO and Bachna Ae Haseenon. I feel that she is a good combination of looks, screen prsence and acting ability(which includes dialogue delivery). I am waiting to watch Love aaj Kal because of 3 attractions in the film–Director Imtiaz Ali, Saif and Deepika.

After Sridevi, she is the next big thing from the South.

And yes ideaunique—height should not be a hindrance to an Aamir-Deepika pairing. The only problem I can see is that Deepika may look too young against Aamir.

    • Re: “After Sridevi, she is the next big thing from the South.”

You’re forgetting Aishwariya Rai, who is also from Karnataka originally…

  6. Sorry, forgot Aishwarya. But, one reason could be that Aishwarya is somehow not cosidered strictly a southie. She is a Mangalorean from Karnataka, right; but the general impression is that she is a Mumbaikar.

both of u r forgetting ASIN, she is surely a thing (if not big at the moment) to reckon with :-)

I think this story was also posted here some months back.

  9. Deepika on ‘Dus ka dum’ and ‘Oye it’s friday’ herself confirmed her height is 5′8.5 so there is no confusion there. Ranbir confirmed his height is 6 ft on the same show.

  10. In films all khans looks tall thanks to camera angel and hidden plateform shoes!

  11. I think Qalandar mentioned somewhere (as someone who’s seen him in person) that he’s not as tall as he looks in his films at all).
