I might be in minority, but I did not think JWM was a spectacular movie. I indeed liked the movie enough. But I sort of feel it was over hyped. No doubt that it was a hit though.
This advert for Love Aaj Kal is copesetic enough. A wee too cutesy, but it was okay for a 1st advert. I’m in agreement that its the usual romantic comedy fare. I did not think Saif pulled off his Sardar look. It looked odd. However Saif looked better in his modern day avatar. Deepika looks vastly gorgeous and youthful. I hope she gives a better acting performance in this movie.
Even though I don’t like Saif ooh that much at all, I think this movie is likeable and Imtiaz has it in him. Saif doesn’t look a Sardar. Deepika has good screen presence, not a good actor though, quite conscious.
Really? I think Saif looks very handsome…very realistic as a sardar.
The thing is, most movies don’t showcase sardars properly…to them, it’s the stereotypical dancing/dumb/drinking sardars…they refuse to believe sardars are humans like them, who just choose to wear a turban because they believe in the tenets of Sikhism.
Saif actually grew a beard for his role…so that is not made up, like it was in Singh in Kinng (Akshay was very over-the-top unrealistic in that movie, playing the stereotype).
As a Sikh, I appreciate Saif portraying a sardar in a deeper level, more realistic level, and I wish Bollywood will move towards more meaningful characters.
For Bollywood, all Punjabis are party-animals, all Bengalis are politicians, and all South Indians are idli-sambar oilheads. I hope the industry can move away from these stereotypes and move towards more deeper characters…
Although this movie might not be a path-breaker, I do feel a good vibe from it…and looking forward to it…
Oh my God! These guys are mad! This film doesn’t have anything to do with Three Times. Comparing this sort of commercial Bollywood venture with a masterwork by Hsiao-Hsien! The apocalypse is upon us!
The problem with the Love Aaj Kal promos is that they’re all the very same. Might be enjoyable fare (even if one cannot quite go along with Kashyap’s hyperbole based on these.. frankly it’s deeply disappointing that he loses his integrity to such a degree when it comes to people he know.. even if the film turns out to be better than expected it certainly cannot match Kashyap’s description! Imtiaz Ali is not Fellini!) but the trailers have sort of stagnated.
The more I see of this film the lamer it seems. Hard to imagine Kashyap praising this to such an extent if it had been directed by anyone other than his buddy. But let’s hope I’m wrong when the film is released.
I thought it was just me. So far there’s nothing special here.
Saif dancing in tight white pants and jeans looks rather odd to me. And Deepika’s practically non existent in these trailers.
Henry: I guess what I find lame is that I expect something better than the usual film of this genre from Imtiaz Ali (even though Jab We Met was no Socha Na Tha)..
Somehow I found Deepika in all interviews rookey, confused and less confident. She should take some lessons or stop giving them. Imitiaz made Kareen act and so there is hope for Deepika too!
This song is quite similar in its initial refrain to this one (it’s a common strain and not really originally with this one either.. and of course one would never dare suggest ‘inspiration’ for Preetam!):
I’ve got a good feeling about LAK. Think it will live upto being a good romantic comedy and do very well at the box office. JWM was good but a bit overated overall. Interesting that Saif is doing a bit of a Shahid here and Shahid is doing a bit of a Saif in Kaminey!
LOl, true! LAK has the potential to be a big money-spinner. On JWM also I agree. Enjoyable film but what was so special about this?! Basically Yashraj was downgraded and Indianized (this is a welcome move of course)!
Agree – there was nothing too special about it…enjoyable, breezy film but not much we’ve seen before. I think Saif’s tide could turn with LAK. I’d much rather see him in this kind of film where his comedy skills can be utilised – then films like TRRP where the film tries to be serious or Race which is just full off bad dialogues. He is really good in comedy – DCH and moments of KHNH show this. A proper comedy with him and Akshay today would be great.
Saif’s were easily the funniest moments in DCH. He also has the natural flair for comedy that Aamir doesn’t and it was evident in this film (Aamir was best at this in a masala sort of way in Fanaa). The second video here with the three in the car was the single funniest in the entire film!
The Subodh character himself was hilarious. Aamir and his entrance in Fanaa and consequent bus scene is quite funny. DCH has lot of funny moments, genuinely funny. I like the scene where they go to Goa and the girl chasing Akash turns up and Akash is hiding behind some plant I think. Also Saif’s recollection of him getting robbed too.
Yeah the robbery was great. Aamir’s favorite outing for me remains Fanaa because here he is more relaxed than I have ever seen him in that kind of masala role which of course includes the comedy. He was effective in RDB too but just more natural I think in Fanaa. Even overall the latter him in the kind of role where he had to power the film in both halves. Not to underrate Kajol’s appeal here but Aamir really had to provide the engine. I am always impressed by actors who can be stars in masala outings (true masala) where the script doesn’t offer all that much and really carry the film on their shoulders. Today actors doing this do not get enough credit but this is much harder in my view than working with films that have proper scripts and so forth. Fanaa was held together by Aamir. With most other stars (as I’ve said forever) it would have fallen apart. Aamir gave that character a certain basic credibility.
Saif looks to be having a good year. There is word that his Qurban with Vivek (Johar’s film) might just release this year since MNIK isn’t going to be around.
Speaking of an actor carrying the film, I was watching Sharaabi last night on satellite. This film would not have been even remotely watchable without Amitabh’s performance. He is just so effortless, such a joy to watch.
absolutely! Sharaabi is not even half a script! I will say though that I enjoy the first half considerably more than the second one. The first half has some genuinely subversive dialogue. The second half is more regular fare. This film though became hugely iconic for Bachchan in a manner that still surprises me somewhat today. In fact in many ways some of his lesser 80s fare is at least as iconic if not more than his greater 70s work (in terms of the quality of the films).

I saw the Rann trailer too on youtube. Don’t know if it’s been posted here or not.

Thanks.

Hmm…looks okay.
I guess I was expecting to be more impressed but still looking forward to the film.
June 8, 2009 at 6:31 PM
I have no interest in this film or any of the others listed except for Aladin and maybe maybe Kaminey.
This seems like your run of the mill romantic comedy. Saif is creeping me out with Deepika.
June 8, 2009 at 8:45 PM
not bad, the i get the same energy as in jwm. On the other hand, if every 1 went the theater thinking of jwm, this film might flop though.

Is there a saif double role here?
No offense, magar main punjabiyon ko dekh dekh ke thak gaya hoon Hindi films mein.

“magar main punjabiyon ko dekh dekh ke thak gaya hoon Hindi films mein.”
I don’t mind actual sardars in movies but yeah I see your point.

What’s with the Nagin music?
Should do quite well at the BO.

The promos are not interesting but the soundtrack will be a huge hit for sure. It’s got the Mauja Mauja type blockbuster songs.

Deepika’s not much of an actress. But she’s made for the camera.

I’ve heard the song a number of times since this morning, i.e. through the trailer.
I have missed not seeing Saif for a while. I skipped Thoda pyar thoda magic.
