holy shit i didnt know mickey rourke was a part of this, man this is going to be one hell of a ride, i just wish edward norton makes an entry by the end as the incredible hulk.
iron man was a big hit but i still think it was underrated, it was better than the dark knight imo
I loved Iron Man though I couldn’t prefer it to Dark Knight. Having said that I do prefer the first Nolan film for its feel in many ways. I think that the mythic was diluted somewhat to serve the ‘police procedural’ ends of the Dark Knight. Almost as if Scorsese had directed the film (I exaggerate somewhat!). But the film had to do many things at once. Become instantly canonical, a huge blockbuster, a real followup to the first and so on. Under the circumstances it’s perhaps hard to imagine a better film though again the mythic might have been left more intact. But then this is the director of the Prestige who is always as interested in effect as he is in the artifice leading to that effect. The closing moments of the Dark Knight therefore make perfect sense.
Iron Man’s a far more likeable film for me, if not exactly a better example of film making technique. But barring Ledger, who gave the movie shots of energy whenever he appeared, I found The Dark Knight somewhat of a let down. But then I didn’t like Nolan’s first film either. I prefer the Nolan of Memento, Following and Insomnia than I do the more “epic” films where he tends to get bogged down…
I don’t quarrel with your Prestige criticism. Memento has never been one of my favorites though. By the way there’s a 2 disc edition here that actually puts the film in order. Defeats the purpose I would think. Insomnia was very well done and stands up very favorably to the original. This was magnificent in the theater.
Yeah absolutely. There are some breathtakingly shot scenes in Insomnia that just knocked me out when I saw it in the theater…
Yeah I’d heard about that “reassembly” feature on one of the multidisc releases…one of the best examples of how “more” is actually “less” when it comes to these DVD extras.
While I preferred the Dark Knight, there can be no doubt that Iron Man “corrected” the biggest flaw of some (otherwise very good) superhero films, namely the tendency to take themselves very seriously. Iron Man here didn’t do that, and the masterstroke for me was casting Gwyneth Paltrow as hyper-knowing underling…

respectfully disagree. Dark Knight was a classic….infact highly uderrated in that it was completely ignored by the Oscars.

My favorite Nolan remains the Prestige.

Memento for me. Nowhere else does his characteristically noir approach actually feel as fatalistic and resonant.
The Prestige was solid. It’s a beautifully mounted film but it just rang hollow and never once truly moved me…
