Great list.
Would also add to this the end credits of RNBDJ and OSO. Oh,nothing special about the credits but atleast a signal that the nightmare had just ended.
December 31, 2009 at 4:27 PM
LOL!!!
December 31, 2009 at 4:27 PM
Abhishek’s death scene in SR was a little too abrupt.
December 31, 2009 at 4:28 PM
Many interesting choices here..
December 31, 2009 at 4:31 PM
will try to think of some others later.. this was a great idea for a post..

From your list Jay, none had me in tears bar one — the end credits of K3G!!
Physical manifestation of pain caused by irreparable damage to certain sections of the brain, not to mention an increased capacity to blurt out expletives, all directed towards the director of the film! That’s how I’d sum up my experience of the film…

You’ve done a Rancho on me here – use simple words please
December 31, 2009 at 4:32 PM
Ha!
I did enjoy this one though.. still enjoy it..
December 31, 2009 at 4:33 PM
Dont bash K3G. Was fun. There has been a lot worse. I thought Jay was serious when he said end credit of K3G. I dont remmebr the end credit but for a moment thought may there was something Jay liked. Got fooled there.
Anyway, have seen it several times and enjoyed it thoroughly.
December 31, 2009 at 4:35 PM
Ha ha! The end credits was a great moment – finally it ended. The torture, the overbearing crying sequences, the rich family, the Poo, the hamming, finally it all ended
December 31, 2009 at 4:40 PM
I share Jay’s sentiments to the fullest. And I had fast-forwarded most of the crying bits before the end credits!
December 31, 2009 at 4:54 PM
I would add:
1) Jhankar Beats: The proposal, which goes like this “Mujhe Taklu Ke Saath Sex Karna Hai”. As good a scene as the hotel scene in When Harry Met Sally!
2) The opening sequence/dialogue in Omkara
3) TZP — the entire “Maa” song.
4) D6 — Dil Gira Dafatan and its picturization amongst a sea of riches!
5) Gulaal — Abhimanyu Singh’s death scene
6) Black Friday — The chase in Dharavi (also the one in Slumdog)
7) No Smoking — Most, if not all, of the hallucinatory images
8) Mithya — Ranveer Shorey’s “audition” (as the Don) in front of a frightened producer
9) Tashan — Opening Scene/sequence
10) BnB — Kajra Re!

Very good idea for a post, Jay.
From me. Some are brief moments, others songs, others still full-blown scenes.
-Irfan sees his newborn child carried away by his enemy at the hospital in “Maqbool.”
-Munnabhai gets his henchmen to pretend to be college students on campus in “Lage Raho Munnabhai.”
-Lallan’s chilling fratricide scene in “Yuva,” and the subsequent confrontation with Om Puri.
-The drunken drive through Delhi set to Paatshaala in “Rang De Basanti”. A certain kind of young recklessness and naive patriotism caught perfectly through sight and sound.
-Arshad Warsi’s Circuit kidnaps a hapless tourist as an “imported body” for Munna’s dissection lecture in “Munnabhai MBBS”.
-Bindya gives the umbrella back to Pankaj Kapur at the very poignant end of “The Blue Umbrella”
-Amitabh Bachchan breaks down and rails against the system of police corruption in a terrific monologue set in a small-town police station midway through the journey in “Khakee.” Vijay lives.
-Langda and Raju on the bridge in Omkara.
-Khoon Chala’s very affecting riot scene from “Rang De Basanti”.
-Akshaye Khanna runs home to get his paints in “Dil Chahta Hai”
-Mera Jahaan from “Taare Zameen Par.”
-Mohanlal’s avuncular police commissioner tortures a suspect in “Company”.
-Amitabh Bachchan’s introductory scene in his lair in “Black”.
-Raju’s home transforms into a 1950s black and white scene in “3 Idiots”.
-Nana Patekar does pooja to himself in “Bluffmaster!”
-Abhishek’s snippets with Hafibhai in the ever underrated “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom”.
-Aamir accidentally calls Akshaye Khanna’s house in “Dil Chahta Hai”.
-Bachchan Pande plays Ravana in “Tashan”.
-Aamir breaks down following the riot in Rang De Basanti”
-Rakesh Maria, losing his composure, interrogates Badshah Khan for the first time in the riveting, vital “Black Friday”.
-The moment of victory in Lagaan and Aamir’s look of “elated exhaustion” – the sky splits open, rain falls, and the single most important chapter in mainstream Hindi cinema’s decade (that of Aamir Khan’s career) takes flight.

-Bindya gives the umbrella back to Pankaj Kapur at the very poignant end of “The Blue Umbrella”
This happens to be one of my favorite scenes as well. I’ve purposefully tried to think of scenes that don’t involve my favorite actors (specially Amitabh) so that I could champion the cause of the ‘smaller’ film. If I had to make a list involving Amitabh, it’d be a task on its own.
For the record, I think Aamir’s balance between commercial and meaningful cinema has been the best this decade. But if I list down all of Amitabh’s supreme performances in this decade it’d be very very hard to match. Starting from Aks to BnB, Sarkar, SR, Nishabd, Black, Family, Khakee, Eklavya, Paa, Cheeni Kum, Viruddh, Dev, Baghban, Kaante and a few more!!
It’s been a special decade for all Amitabh fans.
December 31, 2009 at 6:10 PM
And, this has been far from hisbest decade.
Amitabh has pushed the envelope at every given oppurtunity.
But,it is just anothe chapter in the most rivetting story in Bollywood.
Aamir has rephrased a lot of practices in Bollywood. Super selectiveness, doing fewer films, taking risks, highlighting the importance of effective promotion and unprecedented BO performances, not shying away from controversial commentary ( tho at times going a little too far).
December 31, 2009 at 6:14 PM
agreed, on all counts!
December 31, 2009 at 6:10 PM
Also Aankhen — loved his diabolical character in this one!
December 31, 2009 at 10:41 PM
Great mention..all scenes with Akki-AB in AANKHEN…when he “senses” Bachchan is there..
December 31, 2009 at 6:11 PM
great list!

Some of these are great. From JBJ I love the scenes in Southall! The LRM scene always brings a smile to my face. I also like the scene where Munna forces that idiot son to see his dad on his birthday by nearly throwing him off the roof. Countless gems.

Re:the sky splits open, rain falls, and the single most important chapter in mainstream Hindi cinema’s decade (that of Aamir Khan’s career) takes flight.
Wonderfully stated.

I think Bachchan’s had a terrific decade for sure..he’s done an incredible amount of work, and he’s had a really terrific run with staggering diversity. That a man his age can say he’s done some of these roles, with the sheer selection he’s afforded, is something to behold. Wish him another great decade to come.

LRM’s scene where jimmy shergill confesses to money being lost in shares was a great cinematic moment. also in the same film, many other priceless moments, where the old man strips his clothes to demand pension was priceless!
Omkara’s scenes: the opening scene when langda says to Rajjo: “mai jhutha to kutte ka jhada, aur agar sachcha to teri maa ka khasam b*******”, and the entire scene where he throws rajjo in the lake, saves him and throws back again.
Lagaan : the scenescene when Aamir was offered lagaan exemption and when he finally accepts the challenge was great
In the same film in the beginning was a priceless moment where Captain Russell asks the Raja to eat meat to get the latter’s job done was plain awesome
Swades: the scene just before the Ramleela song where SRK tells the villagers, “hum bas ek doosre ko dosh de rahe hain” was wonderful. and when he meets the farmer’s family and finds out the living conditions.
Company: the entire scene when the misunderstanding takes place between Chandu and Malik and the former shoots down Panditji expecting him to kill him. Brilliant piece of writing that was!
Rab ne bana di jodi: the scene when Surinder leaves a rose for his wife, hesitates and puts it back was just too good and had everyone in splits.
Jodha Akbar: jilalluddin sees Jodha singing for Lord Krishna and watches her in silence.. amazing stuff!
Khosla ka Ghosla: first meeting of khosla with khurana, and the tension in the atmosphere. also when the pehelwans are hired and they travel in trucks to the plot to damage the illegal Khosla property.
the one that takes the cake in the film: “the first time they discover their land has been possessed and Bunty watching the writing on the wall–”yahaan peshab karna mana hai”!!
Chak de India: SRK disgraced and leaving his home, and the look of frustration and anger in his eyes, and the look in his eyes in the final moments of the film, when India wins the world cup.
Taare zameen par: just as jayshah mentioned, the scene when ishaan watched his paintaining by his teacher. priceless moment!
Ghajini: the entire sequence of Kalpana being killed.
Khakee: Bachchan’s speech in the small town police station, and the climax of the same film, with Tusshar shooting down Ajay.
Veer Zaara: the entire “mai qaidi no. 786″ speech by SRK was wonderfully written and enacted
OSO: the yanna rascala sequence was by far one of the funniest this decade
Bhagam Bhag: the scene when Paresh wears the spectacles and cannot see anything, and the goon thinks he is following him. that was a big LOL
Black: the entire climax, and Amitabh delievring the speech at the dinner table. Amitabh at his best
many many more.. cannot remember all
