Rajen’s wish that ‘Satyam discovers the joys of brevity.’

One of my wishes–I wish Aamir would sotip speaking up for VVC and let the man fight his battle with Chetan Bhagat. Wish Raju Hirani and VVC would talk about their deal with Chetan Bhagat, wish Aamir would seriously shut up–or risk getting hated more and more by certain groups of people.
As if what he said in Bangalore wasn’t enough, here’s this stupid idiot telling this to Economic Times–

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/media/entertainment-/entertainment/3-idiots-Chetan-seeks-credit-Aamir-says-what-for/articleshow/5401248.cms

Leading movie critics have privately admitted to me that the film is 70% the book,” Mr Bhagat wrote on his blog, slamming producers for issuing pre-release statements saying the film was only 2-5% based on the book. “The setting, characters, plotline, dramatic twists and turns, one-liners, theme, message — almost all aspects that make up the story are from FPS,” Mr Bhagat wrote.

While publicists for director Mr Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra said they would not comment, Aamir Khan, who plays protagonist Rancchoddas Shyamaldas Chanchad in the film, reacted strongly to Mr Bhagat’s allegations. He said he has told Mr Chopra to sue Mr Bhagat.

“The movie’s starting point is the book. But when we interacted on the sets, and I told him I am sorry that I hadn’t read the book, he said, and I’m quoting him verbatim: ‘Don’t bother because the script is very different from the book’. I do not know why Chetan is changing tune but Vinod’s production house has adhered to the legal contract. I think he is trying to get publicity to sell more copies of ‘Five Point Someone’. In fact, I told Vinod that he should take him to court as he is maligning both Vinod and Raju,” Khan told ET.

    • This is indeed disappointing, coming from Aamir. He’s speaking up for the real crooks behind the drama.

As for Chetan Bhagat, I think he realizes his current position as the most famous writer (in English) in India and has a reason to feel aggrieved. I think VVC is committing a grave mistake by trying to shortchange Bhagat. The latter has a big enough fan following, and it could boomerang on VVC quite easily. Just give him the credit and shut up, once and for all. Not only does this incident leave a bad taste, it goes against all the ethics – ironically for a film that talks about “ethics”, “morals” and principles. First there was the price rise issue, which again was unethical, and now this! Seriously speaking, if I had purchased a ticket in India, I’d be hopping mad at VVC and would have been willing to emulate the shoe-throwing Iraqi journalist, even if I had to cross continents in order to do so.

  10. To Satyam– as somebody who has taught high school English–love your language and the way you express yourself. Of course you do use LOTS of words. LOL!

Rajen–if you want brevity you should read Emily Dickinson’s poetry. Total brevity.

    Famous lines–

    ‘Success is counted sweetest
    By those who ne’er succeed.’

  11. movie planner for new year… tees marr khan and ra 1 may clash.. in christmas..

    http://www.mid-day.com/entertainment/2010/jan/010110-2010-movies-list.htm

  12. Well, it’s still not the New Year where I am, so I hope I can still wish everyone a Happy New Year. I’ve enjoyed my time here and appreciate the way newcomers are welcomed.

I don’t wish for brevity from Satyam, but I do wish that he discovers the joys of book publishing, and brings out his various essays in book form.

For the rest, if we get some enjoyable films that do not think the way to quality is to lose their Indianness, then I will be happy.

Also, isn’t this also the first birthday for Satyamshot, or am I premature?

  13. sandy article on chetan.. and she takes on aamir

In case the text font is small, here’s the matter

3 Idiots may be shattering records at the box-office, but the film has left a bad taste in author Chetan Bhagat’s mouth. He learnt now ‘what not to do in Bollywood’ Sandhya Iyer puts forth the facts

Even as the 3 Idiots team is celebrating the mega success of their film, one man is feeling both hurt and left out. It’s none other than best-selling writer Chetan Bhagat, whose book Five Point Someone was the inspiration behind the film. The makers not only excluded him from all the promotional activities, they also did not give him opening credits at all. Instead his name was relegated to the end credits where it could be easily missed.

Says the author on his blog, “ Yes, clearly, the makers of the film have been unfair and thousands of my readers have been saying so. I am aware of this, and this is not an issue that has ‘just come up’. I’ve been grappling with it for two years, but kept silent about it. The only reason it has surfaced after the movie’s release is because Five Point Someone has a few million readers, and when you copy a popular story claiming it as ‘original’ and ‘completely different’, people are going to find out.”

Chetan also believes that the makers are wrong in claiming that only a small part of the book has made it to the film. “Pre-release, the makers made press statements like the movie is only ‘very loosely’, ‘2%-5% inspired by the book’. After release, those who have read the book and seen the movie (and frankly, I think those are the only people who have the right to comment) find the film to be an adaptation of Five Point Someone(FPS). The setting, characters, plotline, dramatic twists and turns, one-liners, theme, message – almost all aspects that make up the story are from FPS. Yes, there are some changes, any adaptation requires that – but it is no way an original story. Still, don’t take my word for it – go read the book, watch the film,” he says.

Chetan was particularly shocked when he saw the film at the premiere. “My family sat in the theatre shocked, as sequence after sequence came from the book. I was surprised and happy that FPS has made it in such a grand way. However, my family had not spotted my credit in the beginning and they were feeling let down. I knew they had played with me, and that ‘based on a novel by’ credit, which they were legally bound to give was hushed away at the end – with the clear intention of making sure people miss it,” he says.

The author is however not angry with Aamir Khan. He says, “This has nothing to do with Mr Aamir Khan – while the makers are fronting him to talk about the issue (as he has the credibility), this is not about him at all. I am a big fan of Aamir and he has made my story reach people. However, he was told by the makers not to read the book, and he hasn’t. Thus, he cannot comment on the issue in a meaningful manner. The media should stop questioning him. When I met him, both of us were told that the movie is original and not the book. He was asked not to read the book – and I wasn’t shown the script. Go figure,”

Meanwhile, the makers, basking in the film’s glory, are supercilious about the issue. The film’s lead actor Aamir Khan in a recent press conference said that Chetan is changing his mind after admitting himself that there were no similarities between the book and the film. “This reflects more on Chetan and not on Raju (Hirani),” the actor said. The film’s producer, Vidhu Vinod Chopra was no less arrogant. He blatantly accused Chetan of making claims now that the film is a huge hit. “The man was promised a bonus if the film became a hit, and I can tell you that I gave it to him before the film even released,” he said.

Having seen the film and read the book, we believe there are enough similarities for Chetan to feel cheated. Even if the film does not borrow scene-to-scene from the book, there is no doubt that the essence of Five Point Someone has been retained. Therefore we hope the makers show more grace and come to an amicable settlement. For now at least, ‘All is Not so Well’

    • wont take sides… here (m a bit biased ) but happy that sandy u took a initiative .. right or wrtong only insider can say..

    happy near to all

  15. iffrononfire Says:

happy new year to all and their family and hope it brings lot of joy and happiness to all both here in satyamshot and naachgaana

on to 3 idiots its time aamir gives credit to chetan atleast salman did the same with one night at call center( no matter how bad it was)

  16. iffrononfire Says:

“The setting, characters, plotline, dramatic twists and turns, one-liners, theme, message – almost all aspects that make up the story are from FPS”

he is right here more than 70% of the movie is a rip off from five point someone and even before the movie chetan himself in many of editorials in some of the leading news papers discussed the same about indian education system which makes up the integral idea of the movie

aamir khan may be a genious but incidents like tzp(the lifetime property of amol gupe ) and now five point someone really not makes you in good book

  17. iffrononfire Says:

“The only reason it has surfaced after the movie’s release is because Five Point Someone has a few million readers, and when you copy a popular story claiming it as ‘original’ and ‘completely different’, people are going to find out.”

and what will they call chetan now a publicity hungry…

huh an iitian and iim aluminee( who got the best student award which a very very difficult task in iim) … only a guy like him can bring the best essence of indian education system not some undergradraduate or normal graduate who is not even exposed to rigours of some of the best educational colleges of india

he is guy who is extremely popular in generation next educated youth and not for nothing his book sold off so quickly among this group even though i am not a huge fan of his writing but one has to give credit to chetan here for his stand here

its high time than both vidhu vinod chopra and aamir give credit where it is due

  18. iffrononfire Says:

aamir is acting as a big time loser here

    http://www.hindustantimes.com/Aamir-Khan-hits-out-at-Chetan-Bhagat/H1-Article1-492646.aspx

He is trying to take away the credit from the film’s writer Abhijat Joshi, which I am very upset about. It is an attempt on his part to try and take the credit away from the person who has actually worked on the script. It’s very unfortunate. There should not be any confusion to anyone that Abhijat is our film’s writer,”

But in my opinion the credit should be given to Abhijat. For three years, this man has worked on the script. Nobody knows him, but Chetan is a big star,”

    http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/features/corporate-dossier/Let-go-of-your-attachment-to-money-says-Chetan-Bhagat/articleshow/5397834.cms

There were two choices ahead of me: either I could let it be an entirely liberating experience or let it make me feel utterly useless. I chose the former. Within two or three weeks I got called to join the screenplay team for 3 Idiots, a movie based on my second novel. I got invited to write a column and to talk at various events. None of this pays me very much but I love what I am doing. have realised that the moment you’re able to let go of your attachment to money you feel hugely empowered. I have decided not to pursue

foreign agents or publishers in order to squeeze every penny from my writing. I write for an Indian audience.

  19. Happy New yr everyone!!

  20. happy new year 2 every one at satyamshot!!one of d greatest joys of dis year 4 me has been that i discovered dis blog via bigb’s one..nd now i m a regular here..so guys..keep up d good work in twenty ten as well ..good luck!!!!

  21. “keep up the good work in twenty ten” — for some reason this sounds like yet another new format for cricket! :)

  22. between nice to know february is the birthday of satyam shot.. its the best month in the year .. (atleast for me)

  23. mksrooney Says:

hey satyam i just checked the records and my first comment on this forum was on 20th february.. so i felt very happy that i was aboard ss in its first week… and lol i never though i would be so much addicted…

    it has been some journey…

  24. I didn’t want derail this thread with comments about the 3 Idiots controversy on Chetan Bhagat, and posted something on the 3Idiots Premiere thread. However, since the discussion now seems to be taking place here, I thought this wouldn’t be out of line.

I tried to find the policy of the Writers Guild of America (the professional screenwriters’ guild in Hollywood) on screen credit for authors of books whose work is being adapted by someone else. It wasn’t so easy, since the Guild’s main concern is with the screenwriter, not the book author. However, I did find the following:

    From http://www.wga.org/content/default.aspx?id=71

    20. For the purposes only of these Rules, original stories, series and program ideas and original radio, screen and teleplays shall be defined as material which is the sole creation of the member or members and which is written by the member or members on his/her or their own time.

Here’s a discussion on adapting other source material (novels, nonfiction books, magazine articles) to the screen. The participants here espouse the point that is often made by screenwriters, that they do not have to be at all faithful to the original work when adapting it to the screen. I make this point here to stress the fact that saying you changed something from the way it was in the book does not mean that the screenplay is not based on the book, as is being argued by the 3 Idiots team. Two films were specifically mentioned in that Writers Guild discussion as having almost no relation to the original work, Donnie Brasco and Fast Food Nation. So I went to IMDB to look up the writing credits for those films. Here they are:

    Donnie Brasco.: Writing credits(WGA)
Joseph D. Pistone (book “Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia”) and
Richard Woodley (book “Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia”)

    Paul Attanasio (screenplay)

    Fast Food Nation: Writing credits(WGA)
    Eric Schlosser (written by) and
    Richard Linklater (written by)

Eric Schlosser (book “Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal”)

You see that in both cases, the author of the printed work is credited as one of the writers of the film! So where does that leave 3 Vidhu Vinod Chopra? Either with egg on their face, or with the feeble argument that they don’t follow Writers Guild rules in India.

But why should I be surprised? Last year Aamir claimed that Ghajini was not a remake (unauthorized) of Memento. And, all during the Lagaan promotion, he regularly signed off his posts (at the Lagaan site) with “May the Force be with you!” (And I caught at least one awards show — the Screen awards from a couple of years ago, I think — where each winner was brought on stage to the accompaniment of the Star Wars theme music!)

The fact is that people in India in general, and people in Bollywood in particular, have no appreciation, understanding of, or respect for intellectual property rights.

  25. Happy new year, guys! Have a great one ahead!

  26. “HAPPY NEW YEAR” TO EVERYONE AND SPECIALLY TO SATYAM FOR BRINGING SATYAMSHOT….a breath of fresh air and brilliant site and hopefully to properious years ahead.

Films like 3I,paa and several others blockbusters has brought smiles….

  27. My wish for the year is for someone to go head to head with Rajen in a slinging verbal abuse match. And for Rajen to lose.

  28. Wishing you all a very Wealthy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!!

  29. wishing everyone here at satyamshot a happy new year

  30. I know I’m a bit late but my son was born on the 27th of December so been a little bit tied up . Anyway a very happy and prosperous New Year to everyone at Satyamshot especially the creator for bringing about so many like minded people with strong individual personalities who share a common love for all things cinema and cultured .

  31. alex adams Says:

Happy new year. Must congratulate satyam for this lovely site.

  32. Happy New Year’s to all and the best always to my dear friend, Satyam. Here’s toasting to a particularly good year in the cinema. the best too to Qalandar, G.F. and the entire crew here at this cultural bastion.

  33. Wishing everyone at SS a very Happy New Year (though belated). and compliments to Satyam for a wonderful site

  34. Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year at SS,
I wish that in the new year If satyam again has a Dil Chatha Hai Moment , where he has to Choose beetween Him being responsible for the content of SS and between a Friend gone rouge, he as an owner and as the person in whom all of us have placed so much trust/admiration/ affection and respect, chooses what Akhshya Khanna chose in Dil chatha hai !!!

    • what ‘friend’ are you referring to Rocky? I am honestly puzzled in terms of what incident you have in mind.

    • Let me add this though..

I would always choose the friend.. why? Because I am less than Akshaye Khanna (in DCH) and my friends are more than Aamir! So I don’t think anyone would go rogue (by the way I thought you liked rogues?!).

Also don’t believe I am an ‘owner’ here. Yes I set things in motion and I do try to facilitate a good environment (though in almost a year the questionable comments have been really negligible) but everyone makes it what it is. Most importantly let’s not take the fun out of it either! I like ugliness to be avoided in any context but I’m not aiming for a sanitized blog either. Hey it’s not Singapore!

If you consider anything objectionable though feel free to comment. You too are a friend of course. I might sometimes not notice things in time but I can’t say over the course of this entire period that I’ve had any serious objections as such with anyone’s comments, even rare visitors let alone regulars.

      • Sir jee, Jo Mujhe bolna tha, Woh Bol Diya..
and Ya , I do like Rouges and this is not Singapore.
        all izz well !!!

  35. A Happy New Year to everybody here!

It’s fun to read the most abstract (in a good way!) thoughts on the simplest of things!

To all contirbutors, w/o naming names – have a great year ahead. May you all do well in whatever you do, or don’t do!
