The world of Malayalam cinema has been agog for a few weeks now with the soap opera of its only Dadasaheb Phalke award winner, the well-known auteur Adoor Gopalakrishnan, choosing to question the artistic and cinematic merits of the work of his former buddy G. Aravindan, considered by film scholars like Chidanand Dasgupta to be “the Shakespeare of Indian cinema”. Aravindan has been dead and gone for almost 20 years now and this retrospective pooh-poohing of the man’s work and worth has compelled an anguished Malayali intelligentsia to speak up for the departed filmmaker.

Most film advertising consists of a formula, a voice-over of some kind followed by key sequences from the movie to keep the viewer engaged and excited to watch the film. However ABCL’s recently released Hindi film PAA stands out a cut above the rest, not only does the promo manage to capture the core essence of film marketing, but it manages to do it in a unique manner. After Bhanu Athaiya won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” in 1983, Phyllis Dalton, the costume designer for “Dr. Zhivago”, met her and said, “Out there in L.A. the producers think that India comes all readymade. All you need to do is come here with a camera and go out and shoot. All thanks to you.” A compliment pointing to the fact that sometimes blending into a story is more difficult than standing out.
