managed to watch paathshaala today in the 2nd show.. overall, it has a simple and sweet fable feel attached but the problem was it tried too hard to prove is point; ended up being preachy and pretentious on many occasions despite its noble intentions. an okay film which could have been much better
Despite all under whelming expectations, Vivek Oberoi-starrer Prince has managed to rake in the returns for all the ‘hard work’ gone into making this film. Though not from urban metro markets, Kumar Taurani’s big budget film is making the most of the actor’s ‘comeback’ by enthralling audiences in single screen theatres in states like Bihar, Orissa, UP and Assam. It, reportedly, made over 10 crore nett business in its first weekend.
“The film continues to hold on post Monday and Tuesday as well, it’s doing really well,” says Arun Mehra, who distributed the film in Bihar, Assam and Orissa. “It did well on the weekend, with almost a full house at places. But after that everyone was sceptical about its performance on Monday and Tuesday. However, it continues to do well.”
Single screens only
Surendra Pal Singh, another distributor in UP, agrees with Mehra’s claims, but says that the film isn’t doing very well in multiplexes. “Multiplex audiences’ choices seem to have become a little different now, they do not enjoy these films anymore,” he says. To which, Komal Nahata says, “Most markets in the Northern belt enjoy action and music, which is why it’s doing well.” When asked, whether the success of a film like this, for numerous reasons, came as a surprise to the distributors, Mehra says: “I’m not surprised that a film like this has done well. There is a certain class of people who like action films and maybe that’s why the film has worked in those centres. They’ve promoted the film really well in those segments too.”
Money matters
While some distributors and trade analysts feel that it’s difficult to comment upon on the probability of Prince recovering all its investment, Vivek Oberoi has only made things harder by going on record to say: “I agree, it is an expensive film,” to an online publication. From the distributors’ side, Mehra feels: “You can never say whether they can recover the money or not. Only the producer can make a claim on that aspect. But as far as the distributor is concerned, we are good to go.”
Nahata, meanwhile, feels that for a film like Prince, to recover the money that has been invested, it needs to be an all-India hit. “Including promotions, print etc, they have spent over Rs 50 crore to make this film; they will definitely lose money.”
Not yet a hit
Vinod Mirani, editor of Box Office Magazine and trade analyst feels that the film needs to go a long way before it can come close to be called a hit in the city. “It opened at 70 per cent in single screens in the city and at 30 per cent at multiplexes on the first day, but after day one, it’s all been downhill,” says Mirani, before adding that the reason for the unexpected kick start could be the fact that the last few weeks have been dry in terms of good films. “They have apparently spent some Rs 15 crore on promotional activities, so I guess that has paid off.”
Return of the star?
So, does the partial and fragmented success of this film earn Oberoi some faith and credibility in the film industry? “Definitely. At least it opened well. Unlike many films that came out earlier this year and had to be taken off theatres in three to four days, Prince might actually last a little longer. In UP, Bihar, Orissa and Assam, it should be on for another three to four weeks at least. Of course, a lot of credit must also go to the Tauranis for their music and promotion of the film.”
Other Unexpected HIT films
2012 “For an English film to do so well in so many different segments in India, was as surprising as it could get,” says Arun Mehra.
3 Idiots “Before the film released, most of us were sure of its success, but we never thought it would become such a phenomena,” says Arun Mehra.
Love, Sex aur Dhoka (LSD) “We were not expecting it to do too well, as it was a forward film. But multiplex audiences really seemed to like the content and the music,” says Surendra Pal Singh, a distributor.
Ishqiya “The film came in smoothly, but again, there was not too much buzz about it. But eventually people started coming in to watch it. It worked well for us,” says Surendra Pal Singh, a distributor.
B.O. update: ‘Paathshaala’ decent at select plexes, ‘Phoonk 2′ dull
- By Taran Adarsh, April 17, 2010 – 07:46 IST
PAATHSHAALA opened to a mixed response, with some multiplexes opening to a 40% response, while the opening at a few places was below the mark. But the second release, PHOONK 2, didn’t muster an encouraging start. It would be interesting to see how they fare on Saturday and Sunday and if there’s any escalation in business, although the reports are far from encouraging.
Q. What amount is the most that a Hindi film can recover from all revenue streams?
A. If we take the record figures for each revenue stream then the figure is around 185 crore mainly thanks to Three Idiots which had huge Indian theatrical business. The only other film to cross the 100 crore mark from all revenue streams is Ghajini while My Name Is Khan will end up with about 95 crore and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi did 90 crore.
Madan Khund
Q. What will be the final gross of My Name Is Khan in the overseas market?
A. It should be around US $17.5 million. It could be higher but will depend on how it performs in the markets where it will release in May
Shezad, keep me posted on Indonesia week 16 and Egypt week 31 for MNIK. But internationally the Avatar record is in danger. No doubt about it. The 3I comparison is foolish anyway. Who looks at the Indian gross? Holland week 42 is what I’m interested in.
I dont understand why Shezad is been trated the way he is treated now…Now clearly he is a fan and he is making his point..He is not abusing anybody personally or did he??
But the way satyam, rajen are responding to him shows their charachter..Shameless to say the least…
How is shezads’ posts are different to so many syncophanic posts being posted by satyam ,raje ,q and co for abhishek Bacchan…I mean you guys post the disastorous Bingo show and promote it like hell…What wrong shezad has done??
BOI’s numbers are obviously inflated.
A Barbie movie will obviously do well with Pre-k girls, no matter who plays the Barbie and how bad it is. Same with MNIK in those Muslim majority countries. Only the delusional will consider it as evidence of the quality of film or SRK’s star power. You could have had Johnny Lever playing Rizwan and it would have still done well in Egypt/Indonesia etc.
rajen johny lever playing rizvan and earning same as wat it did today…..
bhai mere common sense kya ghaas charne gaya hai kya aapka?
rajen hahahahaahahahahahaha….itni abhishek ki filmein mat dekha kar…
Again ,we are doing MNIK and SRK a huge injustice by focusing on the collections from Mother Earth only. Apparently, it is a huge hit on Mars.
Again, not surprising given most of SRK fans reside there.
satyam all bollywood films togheter will not beat avatar, and what is the probleme if the film is oding well in longer run in some market,
the two main market usa and uk give 8m to mnik , the rest give 9-10 million, so u can laugh how much u want, aur doosre jealous log, bcz all this small market grow up mnik to 17-18 millioon aprox 75-80 crore, for comparision the fav star of this blog abhishek’s 10 year movies total overseas would not exeed mnik total i think, im sure u will all have been happy if his film had collected some paisa from mars and some in 31 week in congo,
in india too, 73-75 crore is good, less than what expected but good too
not laughing at all.. mark my words.. the Avatar record will be broken by the time we get to week 63 in Djibouti.. and this is not even accounting for the shorter MNIK ‘American’ version that will sweep the nation. As for Abhishek how could he possibly be brought up in this context. He’s not even close to beating the original Terminator gross let alone the Avatar one. Week 78 in Bahrain, here comes MNIK!
satyam its ok if u make fun of MNIK but i bet RAAVAN can not even beat MNIK in india forget about worlwide.
raavan no matter how good the film is will only net around 60 crores(80 croes acc to ibos).
yeh to pata hai ke abhishek nei kuch nahi kia abb tak, liken 10 saal mei kuch thora sa to kar deta na, akir super star hai, ss ka of course.
abhi ki poori career ki kamahi akele mnik nei kar di, liken phir bhi mnik ke bare mei bora bala, poor abhi ka kia haal ho ga
waise box office mojo nei egypt ke 8th week ki update nahi ki abhi, suspens suspens lolll
Not everyone can be like your favorite star who works with Anubhav Sinha. Abhishek precisely because he is nowhere has to settle for the likes of Mehra and Rathnam and Neeraj Pandey and Gowariker and all those other losers.
SRK scored a big hit with KKR’s win yesterday when KKR beat a second string MI. If only KKR had played well against KXIP, you would have got your lifetime dream and wish of seeing your superstar dance naked to Dard-e-disco.
btw, why did he not want to dance naked on a MNIK song?
Without BO figures to support Abi’s achivement is naught..Nothing more nothing less…
I hate to say it because offlate i have become a fan of his off screen personna..but he sucks big time on screen..Period…
Whenever there is a movie of Abhi round the corner his supporter are on a hyperdrive to prove that how this is the “”movie of the year”",”"prestige”" movie and what not…After the movie is released everything goes to dumps…It has happend n number of times in the past and i am sure it will happen again in future …
Just give abhi a break…he is better off these hyper drive…Leave him alone…
Without the Bacchan surname he would have been selling lollypops somehwere in Allahabad..
Its like Ajit agarkar being selected in an Indian team time n again without having any credibilty…That doesnt necessarily make him a great bowler….Same is the case with abhi..Just because he is getting those directors doesnt make him a superstar or a great actor…
I mean the behaviour of stayam and Rajen towrads shezad is shameless to say the least…You might not agree with somebody(shezad)…You might not agree with a certain movies’ numbers but that doesnt give you the license to mock, insult a certain person only because he is not hitting you back …This kind of behaviour is ridiculous and shameless and not acceptable only because one is a owner and the other one is his close buddy….
I hope people in this blog understand what i am talking about..
Hi Rajeev,
Easy yaar..I feel no one is being harsh on Shezad . The numbers and facts from BOI are being opposed with a humor. I believe we had already a big thread on this, were this topic had reached a overkill.
If this is humor..then there is a name to this kind of humor,..The humor here is childish and sick…
Shezad merely presented a link from a Box office site …When people here present their case with a ridiculous site like IBOS how many of this group ridicule them ???
Dont take moral high ground and show to the blog that “”how generous you are to allow my comments and all”"…Infact the very comment reveals the arrogant streak in you..
The point is as much i appreciate your penchant for writing and analysisng things ,you have been a complete biased person as far as SRK and bacchans are concerned…
You make a mockery of your intelligence by being childish sometimes as in the case of shezad here..
Its another thing to differ with somebody else’s opinion but you literally mock people when the person concerned makes different opinion .Especially in cases where he cant hit you back with same intensity..
Rajeev, I like your ‘wager’ here. It’s an old one. Folks like yourself should be allowed as much rudeness as possible. If not I am not being ‘fair’! But here you’ve raised the bar even higher. By even suggesting that you’ve been rude I am somehow being ‘arrogant’! Some things never change with some fans.
For the record I am not mocking anyone but yeah talking about a film in week 8 in Bahrain or Holland or wherever invites a bit of mockery. And even so there’s nothing over the line there. I think you’ve reacted so strongly because the sarcasm found its mark!
anyway there’s no point in a constant back and forth over this. I don’t wish to clutter the forum so that’s it from my side on this topic. The evidence is there for everyone to see and make up their own minds about what happened here.
Satyam, you have not personally attacked other people on this forum names with language such as ‘shameless’ and ‘shows their character’. Which is not something I can say for someone else, who has used the same language personally attacking you on this thread as well as others on other threads.
thanks for that comment Jeevcy.. speaking for myself I just used some humor with Shezad.. to be very frank some of his comments beg for sarcasm.. it’s not about MNIK.. 3I was such a monster but if someone had been talking about 3I’s week 8 gross in Bahrain I’d find that as amusing. Ironically all this insistence on these small markets reveals the original anxiety that the film just didn’t work at all in India. even the inflated BOI numbers reveal what really happened. Johar has had two KANK-like films in a row except that MNIK was worse in one sense. when KANK released it was the second highest opener of its time and not too removed from Krrish (the record holder at that point.. many suggested then that KANK was bigger but I never saw evidence of this in the numbers). MNIK though in not even within striking distance of Ghajini let alone 3I. I personally don’t believe it made more than 42 crores or so. It might be a bit higher (or a bit lower) but the 46-48 crore figure is sci-fi as far as I’m concerned.
I hope though that this comment won’t launch another 200 comments on MNIK because I will not be responding.
thankx raj for ur comments.
i dont mind what they say, i visit ss and ng for a while now so i know what is their response style.
i just paste a news from yesterday from boxofficeindia, and satya and rajen chorou ho gai apne nonsense response ke saath.
also raj , it is not even a question of disagrement with number ect, its only hates aur jealous hain
asal mei raj, satyam nei start mei kaha tha ke mnik ww total is 125crore and is only 10 crore more than ghajini indian total ( 70 + 55 ) , and all his blah blah, but once now the scenario is very diferent , what can he say, only way is bringing avatar lolll
wonder how much money did SRK pay Bal Thakerey for the free publicity for a humongous opening? Finally the SRK apology on twitter was part of planned exit strategy.
jeevcy, even if Shiv Sena created a buzz around the film, the film also lost a big share, not only in almost the whole of Mumbai but also important cities like Pune. maybe the film is not a hit but it wouldnt be correct to say that shiv sena “helped” the film in a good opening
first day occupancy rate was below par for this sort of hype. Sena controversy helped or not is baseless debate because at first place movie didn’t open well.
Pranay, I believe there was an overflow in the later days in Mumbai and other affected cities.
But people overseas went to see the movie to show solidarity and not get bullied by the Sena. Mahesh Bhatt had his Union friends see the movie as a sign of solidarity (around 50,000 of them). That is an business of Rs. 5 cr.
its a shame that mnik is still being talked about, give a subject a break and the film has done what it could so move on…no offence guys but it is a stale and bore…
MNIK will be talked about till the time it finishes its run in all those foreign territories…lol but the film is still hovering around 100cr mark or less so which part of overseas is still running…
Quick question, are we going to get updates on how other films are doing in Egypt, Bahrain, (no doubt the Congo will be next) like we are getting for MNIK?
congo is next for MNIK update and then amazon jungle after that and then also very good updates from “dhanfulia” aswell.
shehzad if you dont know where dhanfulia is then just go into search engines…..OK..
I have done similar exercise for some movies few days back. Check this article : Box-office economics of different era
I use technique of Gross collection/average ticket price of that particular era. My estimation of few movies is pretty close with this list. Let me analyze all these movies; will come up with my analysis soon.
Chennai Box Office – April 16 to 18
Wednesday, 21 April , 2010, 13:05
The CBO remains the same as last week because there are no new releases. Paiyaa continues to dominate the CBO, and is turning out to be Lingusamy and Karthi’s biggest hit. The film has crossed Rs 3.5 crore net in Chennai city, making it a super hit.
At number two is Angadi Theru, which has picked up very well.
In third place is Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya, the highest collecting film of the year in Chennai.
In fourth place is Clash of Titans and Avatar still remains steady at number five.

Munna:
Prince an unexpected hit?
Despite all under whelming expectations, Vivek Oberoi-starrer Prince has managed to rake in the returns for all the ‘hard work’ gone into making this film. Though not from urban metro markets, Kumar Taurani’s big budget film is making the most of the actor’s ‘comeback’ by enthralling audiences in single screen theatres in states like Bihar, Orissa, UP and Assam. It, reportedly, made over 10 crore nett business in its first weekend.

While some distributors and trade analysts feel that it’s difficult to comment upon on the probability of Prince recovering all its investment, Vivek Oberoi has only made things harder by going on record to say: “I agree, it is an expensive film,” to an online publication. I hope people in this blog understand what i am talking about..
April 20, 2010 at 3:24 AM
Hi Rajeev,
Easy yaar..I feel no one is being harsh on Shezad . The numbers and facts from BOI are being opposed with a humor. I believe we had already a big thread on this, were this topic had reached a overkill.
April 20, 2010 at 3:34 AM
Rajesh,
If this is humor..then there is a name to this kind of humor,..The humor here is childish and sick…
Shezad merely presented a link from a Box office site …When people here present their case with a ridiculous site like IBOS how many of this group ridicule them ???
April 20, 2010 at 8:01 AM
Rajeev, I am ‘shameless’ indeed.. I am allowing all of these comments of yours to stand!
April 20, 2010 at 8:41 AM
Satyam,
Dont take moral high ground and show to the blog that “”how generous you are to allow my comments and all”"…Infact the very comment reveals the arrogant streak in you..
April 20, 2010 at 11:17 AM
April 21, 2010 at 3:04 AM
Satyam,
I reacted because of your double standrads..had you been consistent in your praise and mocks no body would have recated..
But thats not the case…
Anyways even i dont weant to dig deep in to this …lets move on…I have said whatever i have to say…
April 20, 2010 at 8:52 AM
Satyam, you have not personally attacked other people on this forum names with language such as ‘shameless’ and ‘shows their character’. Which is not something I can say for someone else, who has used the same language personally attacking you on this thread as well as others on other threads.
April 20, 2010 at 11:13 AM
thanks for that comment Jeevcy.. speaking for myself I just used some humor with Shezad.. to be very frank some of his comments beg for sarcasm.. it’s not about MNIK..
April 20, 2010 at 3:06 AM
thankx raj for ur comments.
i dont mind what they say, i visit ss and ng for a while now so i know what is their response style.
i just paste a news from yesterday from boxofficeindia, and satya and rajen chorou ho gai apne nonsense response ke saath.
also raj , it is not even a question of disagrement with number ect, its only hates aur jealous hain
asal mei raj, satyam nei start mei kaha tha ke mnik ww total is 125crore and is only 10 crore more than ghajini indian total ( 70 + 55 ) , and all his blah blah, but once now the scenario is very diferent , what can he say, only way is bringing avatar lolll

wonder how much money did SRK pay Bal Thakerey for the free publicity for a humongous opening? Finally the SRK apology on twitter was part of planned exit strategy.
April 20, 2010 at 6:09 AM
Jeevcy,
SRK paied exactly the same amount what aamir khan paid to Narendra modi during Fanna…
April 20, 2010 at 8:45 AM
Well, there was a twitter apology in only one scenario… hehe !! proves that one scenario was paid !!
April 20, 2010 at 5:08 AM
jeevcy, even if Shiv Sena created a buzz around the film, the film also lost a big share, not only in almost the whole of Mumbai but also important cities like Pune. maybe the film is not a hit but it wouldnt be correct to say that shiv sena “helped” the film in a good opening
April 20, 2010 at 5:20 AM
first day occupancy rate was below par for this sort of hype. Sena controversy helped or not is baseless debate because at first place movie didn’t open well.
check these old pieces :

Pranay, I believe there was an overflow in the later days in Mumbai and other affected cities.
But people overseas went to see the movie to show solidarity and not get bullied by the Sena. Mahesh Bhatt had his Union friends see the movie as a sign of solidarity (around 50,000 of them). That is an business of Rs. 5 cr.

its a shame that mnik is still being talked about, give a subject a break and the film has done what it could so move on…no offence guys but it is a stale and bore…
April 20, 2010 at 7:30 AM
hehe.. sad but true. MNIK will be talked about till the time it finishes its run in all those foreign territories
April 20, 2010 at 8:49 AM
MNIK will be talked about till the time it finishes its run in all those foreign territories…lol but the film is still hovering around 100cr mark or less so which part of overseas is still running…

April 22, 2010 at 7:29 AM
congo is next for MNIK update and then amazon jungle after that and then also very good updates from “dhanfulia” aswell.

April 21, 2010 at 8:45 AM
I have done similar exercise for some movies few days back. Check this article : Box-office economics of different era
I use technique of Gross collection/average ticket price of that particular era. My estimation of few movies is pretty close with this list. Let me analyze all these movies; will come up with my analysis soon.
April 22, 2010 at 5:43 AM
