Box Office: Lamhaa, Udaan, Tere Bin Laden release; Inception
Tuesday, July 20, 2010
Last week’s Shahid Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor starrer Milenge Milenge looks to wrap up around 10 crore net collections. This is Kareena Kapoor’s 3rd flop in 10 months in films featuring her in major role starting with Main aur Mrs. Khanna, Qurbaan. Shahid Kapoor had an average grosser earlier.
I Hate Luv Storys is wrapping up around 41 crores net behind Rajneeti, Housefull, My Name is Khan and Kites and bit in vicinity ahead of Raavan and Veer.
This week’s releases saw the Sanjay Dutt starrer Lamhaa take the best opening on Friday but over Sunday, newcomer Abhishek Sharma’s comedy Tere Bin Laden showed a better pickup. Both TBL and Lamhaa are heading for around 8-10 crores week in India. The reports on TBL are better than Lamhaa and the other release Udaan, which looks to finish its week last under 3 crores.
Hollywood release inception however may end up topping the week instead overall on the strength of its own multiplex run.
thanks satyam for the report..
yeah and its an indian film.. this ali zafar guy, a singer, has made his bollywood debut with this!
good film and a funny satire after a hell of a long time..

B.O. update: Metro plexes khatta, single screens meetha
- By Taran Adarsh, July 24, 2010 – 08:50 IST
The opening response of KHATTA MEETHA was extremely mixed across the country. While the film opened to a below average response at multiplexes of metros, the opening numbers of the film at single screens ranged from good to very good. The occupancy at multiplexes was in 40% to 50% range, while single screens were 70% to 80%, which is good, but not excellent. The not-too-happening response at multiplexes of metros isn’t good news, since a major chunk of revenue comes from plexes mainly. Will the single screens compensate that business, is to be seen.
Akshay Kumar’s previous release HOUSE FULL had embarked on an electrifying start across the nation. In comparison, KHATTA MEETHA is approx. 60% of HOUSE FULL. One key factor that has gone against the film, besides the lack of solid content of course, is the fact that the makers had publicised the film as a full-on comedy, while KHATTA MEETHA is a satire, with emphasis on drama. The misleading promotion seems to have sent out wrong signals, with several moviegoers feeling dejected.
KHATTA MEETHA has to fare exceedingly well on Saturday and Sunday [at plexes as well as single screens], if it has to collect a hefty total in its opening weekend.

Khatta Meetha performed below expectations on day one with nett business in the 6.50-6.75 crore range.
The business was very good in Maharashtra and CP Berar due to the local flavour in the film but at other places the opening was average. CP Berar grossed a very good 45 lakhs.
Territories like Delhi/UP, East Punjab, CI and Rajasthan where normally Akshay Kumar films perform best were below the mark. Delhi/UP did business of 1.25 crore nett, East Punjab was 56 lakhs nett, CI did 24 lakhs nett and Rajasthan was 35 lakhs nett.
It now remains to be seen how it goes over the weekend but it seems that business for the weekend is heading to be in the 20-22 crore nett range. Distributors paid pretty big prices in most circuits and will struggle to recover their money and even overall Indian theatrical business is not looking great. Mumbai circuit alone was sold for 10 crore.
Again proves my point of manufactured commentary. Opening numbers depends on prints count in circulation and merits of movie including buzz/hype genre etc. As movie hardly open to cent percent response on universal basis now days, we can have as many as N distinct reports on opening and no one can challenge it. Raavan with similar figures and lesser prints counts (Karnataka was hugely affected due to state policy) was reported as poor opening. And KM with more number of prints in circulation but similar day one figure as of Raavan is reported as mixed response. Similar first day figure of DDD was termed as superb opening (with similar prints count). Do these guys has any ethics ?
Box Office: Khatta Meetha takes best opening since Rajneeti; reports
Saturday, July 24, 2010
The new Akshay Kumar starrer for Priyadarshan, Khatta Meetha, has taken the best opening of the summer after Rajneeti with around a 7-8 crore net collection on Friday, ahead of I Hate Luv Storys and Raavan. Bulk of the collections have been recorded in single screens. The reports are mixed however and it remains to be seen how steadily the film holds but a 22-23 crore weekend net appears safe.
Last week, the American release, Inception led the way ahead of all Bollywood releases in India with around 11 crore net. The film is holding well even in weekend 2, ahead of another Hollywood debut, Salt. Even Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day held relatively ok in India for that matter.
Tere Bin Laden the Mumbai satire on an Osama Bin Laden had a decent, better than Friday initial, but lower than post-weekend expectation, run of about 6-7 crore net compared to 8 crore net recorded by Lamhaa which crashed. Udaan steadied out at over 3 crores.
Khatta Meeta was a disappointment..I have seen original Vellanakaludu Nadu and this comes no way near it….Priyadarshan needs to change his style..His style of slapslick and loud comedy has started to become irritating…
LOS ANGELES – Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Inception” has won a battle of superstar action thrillers over Angelina Jolie’s “Salt” at the weekend box office.
“Inception” remained the No. 1 movie for the second-straight weekend with $43.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The Warner Bros. thriller featuring DiCaprio as leader of a team that sneaks into people’s dreams raised its 10-day total to $143.7 million.
Sony’s spy caper “Salt” debuted a solid No. 2 with $36.5 million. The movie stars Jolie as a CIA operative who goes rogue after she’s accused of being a Russian sleeper agent.
Coming in at No. 3 with $24.1 million was Steve Carell’s family hit “Despicable Me.” The animated comedy raised its domestic total to $161.7 million.
In a rare convergence of fresh ideas, the top three movies all were original stories, not sequels or adaptations of comic books, best-sellers, video games or other pre-existing material.
“Typically in summer, all we’re seeing are rehashes and sequels and reboots, whatever you want to call them,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “To have original stories as the top-three films is a lesson to studios that maybe audiences are open to more originality in the summer and to perhaps not play it so safe, even though that goes against the grain of every fiber in every studio executive’s being.”
The weekend’s other new wide release, 20th Century Fox’s family comedy “Ramona and Beezus,” took in $8 million to finish at No. 6. The movie is based on Beverly Cleary’s children’s books about a teenage girl and her accident-prone little sister.
“Inception” hung in strongly in its second weekend, its total down just 31 percent from its $62.8 million opening. During the busy summer, top hits often drop 50 percent or more in the second weekend and rarely repeat as the No. 1 movie.
The film will quickly shoot past the $200 million mark at the domestic box office and has a good shot at topping $300 million, said Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros.
Repeat business is accounting for a good share of “Inception” revenues as fans return to delve deeper into the labyrinthine story concocted by writer-director Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight”).
“There’s so much on the screen. It’s so original and so smart that it raises questions that I think can be answered in different ways if you see the movie multiple times,” Fellman said.
While young males usually make up the bulk of the action audience, women and older crowds were the core fans of Jolie’s “Salt.” Females accounted for 53 percent of viewers, while 59 percent of the audience was older than 25, according to Sony.
“What the movie really has going for it just a kick-ass performance by Angelina Jolie,” said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. “It just speaks well to the viability of our film for many weeks to come that you have such an incredible hold for ‘Inception,’ and we’re still able to open our picture. We coexisted really nicely.”
Overall revenues rose for the fourth-straight weekend as Hollywood continued to recover from a box-office swoon earlier in the summer. Receipts totaled $164 million, up 11 percent from the same weekend last year, when “G-Force” was No. 1 with $31.7 million.
Revenues this season are at $3 billion, about 3 percent ahead of the record pace of summer 2009. But accounting for higher ticket prices, movie attendance is down 3.4 percent compared to last summer’s, according to Hollywood.com.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.
Ultimately I’m very heartened by this idea that “original” (and by this I don’t mean creatively unprecedented but simply not-based-on-previous-source-material) is dominating the summer a bit because this article hits the nail on the head that studio execs are just not doing enough of that with all the comics and books and (god save us) theme park rides (!) that are being turned into films….
Even if one isn’t a fan of these “originals” I prefer to see a bit more creative heavy-lifting on the part of screen-writing rather than straight out adaptation. For that reason alone I can celebrate the box office standings here.
wanted opened at 50m and went on to do 134m but then it wasn’t competing with Inception. As I said the other day Salt is a real guilty pleasure and I liked it far more than Wanted (which I didn’t particularly enjoy).
didn’t like wanted either, but i’m excited about seeing salt. i watch most of angelina jolie movies. as for the debate if she’s just nice to look at or is actually talented…i consider a talented actress who also happens to be good looking. she’s the only big name actress that i find believable in action movies.
Khatta Meetha did decent business of around 22.75 crore nett over its first weekend. The approx daily breakdowns were 6.75 crore nett on Friday, 7.75 crore nett on Saturday and 8.25 crore nett on Sunday.
The film showed a good pick up at metro multiplexes on Saturday but at the single screens where it had opened well on Friday the collections were lower. On Sunday metro multiplexes were similar to Saturday but single screens were higher. Maharashtra has fared best followed by Gujarat, Circuits like Bengal, Nizam and Mysore are on the lower side comparatively.
Overall its a decent weekend and the weekday business will decide where the film is going. The weekend business was slightly higher than the last Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan film De Dana Dhan but at that time 22-23 crore nett weekend was regarded good for a big release and today its around the 27-28 crore nett mark.
If these reports and the one from IBOS (which was more positive to begin with) are put together Khatta Meetha has had more than a fair weekend. It’s hardly the most expensive film around. One of the ‘smaller’ Akshay films in this genre and if it stays stable this is still heading for a healthy total.
Khaata Meetha had a poor Monday as it recorded only 3 crore nett business. The drop is 55% from Friday which would be considered good if the Friday was good but as drop has not come from a high level the Monday collections are well below the mark.
The film collected poorly all over be it multiplexes and single screens, even performance in Maharashtra single screens where it was doing best was poor. The film has grossed 25.75 crore nett in four days. The trending suggests the week is looking to finish in the 31-32 crore nett region.
The film still should become an average fare as long as it does not completely crash over the second weekend. Lifetime business may come in at around 40 crore nett.
The television premiere of blockbuster gives Sony 800% jump in rating, 239% of increased time spent and 135% jump in reach.
This movie didn’t only break all records at the box office but also devastated every possible rating a movie got on any TV channel.
And what else could be better for a TV channel who’s fighting back to make it into the big league again. Sony had its evening on Sunday when TV premier of Blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’ on the channels scored highest rating ever in the history.
3 Idiots is the highest rated movie television premiere with average rating of 5 according to the overnight television rating agency aMap (NWE India| C&S4+| 25th July 2010| 20:00-00:00). Prior to this premiere, ‘Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani’ on Colors last year (27.12.2009) garnered a highest rating of 4.0.
The rating of 3 Idiots is obviously enough to boost up the morale of sinking Sony which is trying to fight back from a shattered spell.
The aMap report says that Sony garnered 52.3 whole day GRPs on Sunday with 39.9 GRPS garnered by 3 Idiots alone. The nearest in competition were Star Plus and Colors with whole day’s GRP of 29 and 20.3 respectively.
According to aMap the Channel had highest ratings as compared to other GEC and movie channels on that day as all the competition channels had left the ground empty for Sony. Once again the nearest in competition were Star Plus and Colors with ratings of 1.2 and 0.9 respectively.
Looking at the trends over last 4 Sundays where Sony had garnered average rating of 0.6 during the time band of 19.30 to 00.30, the channel gained more than 800% jump on this Sunday. The TRP touched the high of 7.2 during the same time band.
The channel has also registered 239% of increased time spent in comparison to average time spent during last 4 Sundays in the corresponding time band.
360 degree campaign to promote the television premiere of 3 Idiots has resulted with the increase in its reach by 135%. Sony has recorded a reach of 18 as compared to average reach of 7.7 for last 4 Sundays during 20:00-00:00.
The other movies which were premiered this year on TV were also received very well by the TV audience. aMap data says that Hrithik and Barbara Mori starer Kites which was a dud at box office received rating of 2.5 followed closely by Shahrukh’s controversial My Name Is Khan which managed to get rating of 2.4.
CBO – July 23 to 25
Tuesday, 27 July , 2010, 14:39
Jayam Raja’s Thillalangadi has taken a decent opening and is at the number one slot, though the film carries mixed reports.
At number two is Madrasapattinam, which is rock steady at the box-office and has netted over Rs 2 crore.
At number three is Angelina Jolie’s Salt, which has taken an ok opening, and in fourth place is the highly talked about Christopher Nolan film, Inception.
In fifth place is the sleeper hit Kalavani, which has seen an increase in its collection thanks to good word of mouth
Khatta Meetha dropped again on Tuesday with around 2.25-2.50 crore nett business on Tuesday. The business was 20-25% lower than Monday.
This takes the films five day business to around 28 crore nett and the film is likely to add another 3-3.50 crore for a weekly total of 31-31.50 crore nett.
The second weekend looks set to struggle as trending is bad and there will be competition from Once Upon A Time and that film is expected to fare best in the same region (Maharashtra) that Khatta Meetha is doing its best best business.
I strongly feel that the word of mouth spreads faster than fire. The moment the first show ends, the moviegoers are ready to deliver the verdict. They mince no words, they play no favourites, they come with an open mind [without any biases], they speak nothing but the truth. No wonder, the first show is the deciding factor. It indicates where the film is headed — upwards or downwards.
Last week’s TERE BIN LADEN held very well in its second weekend, despite KHATTA MEETHA making an entry at cineplexes. INCEPTION, also in its second weekend, held strongly [it collected approx. Rs. 2.99 cr. nett], despite Jolie’s SALT invading the cineplexes. SALT too is Jolie’s biggest opener in India, according to a statement issued by Sony.
That brings me to KHATTA MEETHA. The Akshay Kumar-Priyadarshan team is considered one of the hottest combinations in the industry. Naturally then one expected the film to start with a bang. It had a major factor going in its favour: Open week, with no major opposition to counter that Friday. Yet, the opening weekend and weekdays’ numbers are not in sync with the stature of the film.
Internationally, the film has emerged Akshay’s lowest opener [check Overseas Boxoffice] and in India, the film had a drastic fall from Monday onwards. If the weekend is great and the Monday numbers are lower or almost at par with Friday numbers, it doesn’t raise alarm bells. But if the Friday numbers are strictly average [approx. Rs. 7 cr. nett] and the Monday figures are a mere Rs. 3 cr. nett, it clearly indicates that the film hasn’t found appreciation. The junta’s verdict is loud and clear!
It’s high time all actors, whether big or small, realise the fact that star power alone cannot guarantee success. Star power can lure junta to cineplexes on Day 1, but the movie needs to stand on a solid foundation [read script] to stay in the comfort zone, post Saturday. Monday is an acid test for any and every film and if the word of mouth is positive, the film continues to gallop at an even pace for the next four days [Monday to Thursday]. If not, the business sinks faster than Titanic these days!
Box Office Half-Yearly Report Card: RED MARKS ALL THE WAY!
Komal Nahta
The good news is that the second half of 2010 has kicked off well with I Hate Luv Storys taking a good initial. But the bad news is that the first half saw the industry suffering losses to the tune of Rs. 3000 million. Raavan, Kites, Veer, Prince, Teen Patti and Rann were some of the notable flops and disasters which contributed generously to the losses of the first half of the year.
A total of 125 films were released from January to June this year. Of these, 81 were Hindi films, three were English, one was Bengali-English, two were animation films (in Hindi) and 38 were dubbed in Hindi from different languages.
Out of the 125 films, barely 10 films managed to make profits. Of course, the major winners were Housefull, Raajneeti and Badmaash Company. Although the India theatrical business of Raajneeti was much more than that of Housefull, the profits of the latter film were bigger than those of the former because of the high cost of acquisition of the former. Love Sex Aur Dhokha was another small film which managed to make small profits.
The two main reasons for such a large number of failures were: weak content and high pricing. Producers, directors and writers seemed to have forgotten to concentrate on the script and, instead, ran after star names, paying them undeservedly high fees, thereby increasing the cost of production of their films. Not just that, some corporates also paid through their nose to acquire the distribution rights of star-cast films, ensuring thereby that they would never even recover their investment, leave alone make profits. Almost all corporates seem to be living in an illusionary world as far as the business of films is concerned. After 3 Idiots did a theatrical business of Rs. 100 crore in India, corporates have probably made that their benchmark. But the fact is, no film has reached anywhere close to 3 Idiots – and it is not easy to break the record of that film!
It is not easy to break the record of ‘3 Idiots’!
Another area in which production houses need to show restraint is marketing and promotion. Corporates, especially, seem to be under the mistaken belief that the more they yell, the more they sell. It doesn’t always work like that. Every rupee spent on publicising a film does not necessarily result in increasing revenues of that film. Foreign travels by stars to attend premiere shows of films, road shows in different cities of India prior to release, indiscriminate spending on street publicity and electronic media – all these are proving to be wasteful rather than tasteful expenditure!
Another disease that seems to have afflicted the creative people in the film industry is that of targeting the non-traditional markets abroad. While trying to expand their horizons, filmmakers and actors are making films which they feel would appeal to the audience in hitherto unexploited markets. Consequently, they are losing out on the audience in India because their films attempt to cater to an altogether different world. It is no secret that the public in the non-traditional markets has so far given Hindi films the cold shoulder even when those films have been made specially to appeal to them. In other words, some of our over-ambitious filmmakers and stars have been trying to push the envelope but have not met with much success; rather they have had to face failure on home turf in a failed bid to conquer newer grounds abroad.
So how does the industry survive such huge losses? And what is the way out?
So how does the industry survive such huge losses? And what is the way out? Corporates have deep pockets and, therefore, they have the ability to absorb the shocks provided by otherwise unbearable losses. For instance, of the big-budget debacles released in the first half of the year, two of the biggest – Raavan and Kites – were distributed worldwide by one corporate house, Reliance Big Pictures. Had they been distributed by an independent or individual distributor, the obituary of his firm would’ve been written by now because it may have been impossible for an individual to bear the losses of the two films under reference. Secondly, the film industry is constantly being fed by new money flowing inside. Call it the glamour of the film industry or whatever, but there is always a steady stream of outsiders entering Bollywood. Obviously, they come with new money which then becomes part of the industry’s capital.
But this cannot be the solution. The way out has to come from within the industry because if new capital introduced into the industry is the only way to correct matters, it is not a very happy industry to be in. The correction lies with our producers who have to opt for more honest scripts which, first and foremost, would appeal to the audience traditionally known to watch Hindi films and then, perhaps, additionally attempt to interest the non-traditional audience. It also lies with our writers and directors who can’t ignore the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres of India simply for the lure of a market which they want to capture. And, of course, our stars need to under- stand that if they continue to only push the envelope in a bid to either make more money (by charging fancy prices) or conquer new markets, they themselves might be pushed out of the industry.

supposed to be stable. here’s the earlier IBOS report:

B.O. update: Metro plexes khatta, single screens meetha

Khatta Meetha First Day Business
Saturday 24th July 2010 14.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

It’s more or less in the Raavan range on opening day..
July 24, 2010 at 2:17 PM

IBOS seem to have a much more positive report:

‘Inception’ trumps ‘Salt’ with $43.5M weekend
AP
1. “Inception,” $43.5 million.
2. “Salt,” $36.5 million.
3. “Despicable Me,” $24.1 million.
4. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” $9.7 million.
5. “Toy Story 3,” $9 million.
6. “Ramona and Beezus,” $8 million.
7. “Grown Ups,” $7.6 million.
8. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” $7 million.
9. “The Last Airbender,” $4.2 million.
10. “Predators,” $2.9 million.
July 25, 2010 at 9:08 PM
Ultimately I’m very heartened by this idea that “original” (and by this I don’t mean creatively unprecedented but simply not-based-on-previous-source-material) is dominating the summer a bit because this article hits the nail on the head that studio execs are just not doing enough of that with all the comics and books and (god save us) theme park rides (!) that are being turned into films….
Even if one isn’t a fan of these “originals” I prefer to see a bit more creative heavy-lifting on the part of screen-writing rather than straight out adaptation. For that reason alone I can celebrate the box office standings here.
July 25, 2010 at 9:00 PM
wanted opened at 50m and went on to do 134m but then it wasn’t competing with Inception. As I said the other day Salt is a real guilty pleasure and I liked it far more than Wanted (which I didn’t particularly enjoy).
July 25, 2010 at 9:09 PM
I despised Wanted.
July 25, 2010 at 9:25 PM
didn’t like wanted either, but i’m excited about seeing salt. i watch most of angelina jolie movies. as for the debate if she’s just nice to look at or is actually talented…i consider a talented actress who also happens to be good looking. she’s the only big name actress that i find believable in action movies.

BOI:
The territory breakdowns are as follows.
Mumbai – 9 crore
Delhi/UP – 4.50 crore
East Punjab – 1.90 crore
West Bengal – 1 crore
Bihar – 50 lakhs
CP Berar – 1.40 crore
CI – 80 lakhs
Rajasthan – 1.10 crore
Nizam – 1.05 crore
Mysore – 1 crore
Others – 50 lakhs
TOTAL – 22.75 crore

If these reports and the one from IBOS (which was more positive to begin with) are put together Khatta Meetha has had more than a fair weekend. It’s hardly the most expensive film around. One of the ‘smaller’ Akshay films in this genre and if it stays stable this is still heading for a healthy total.

Midweek B.O.: ‘Khatta Meetha’ 23 cr. nett weekend, falls on Monday
July 27, 2010 at 8:41 AM
BOI:

3 Idiots Breaks All Records On Idiot Box

Khatta Meetha Drops Further On Tuesday
Wednesday 28th July 2010 16.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
Khatta Meetha dropped again on Tuesday with around 2.25-2.50 crore nett business on Tuesday. The business was 20-25% lower than Monday.
This takes the films five day business to around 28 crore nett and the film is likely to add another 3-3.50 crore for a weekly total of 31-31.50 crore nett.
The second weekend looks set to struggle as trending is bad and there will be competition from Once Upon A Time and that film is expected to fare best in the same region (Maharashtra) that Khatta Meetha is doing its best best business.

Taran:
Not khatta, not meetha, just pheeka!
July 29, 2010 – 07:54 IST
