Nicolas Cage in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s next
Hiren Kotwani

It’s learnt that Vidhu Vinod Chopra has finalised Nicolas Cage for his film Broken Horses. The movie will go on the floors early next year.

“Vidhu is currently in Los Angeles, working on for Broken Horses. Even in Mumbai, he was in touch with his Hollywood contacts for the cast and crew. Cage has been confirmed for one of the leading roles just a few days ago,” says our source.

Reportedly, Mickey Rourke has also been approached for an important role in the gangster film that Chopra is producing in association with Reliance Big Pictures. Apparently, Broken Horses is inspired by the filmmaker’s Parinda, starring Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit.

Uttam Kumar was watching a trial show of “Sagina Mahato” in 16mm print at NT1 Studio, Kolkata in July, 1972. Later he told director Tapan Sinha, “Tapan da, thank God you did not cast me as Sagina. It would have been a blunder as I could not have matched Yusufda who has brought Sagina alive on screen.”

My Review of LAMHAA (Hindi, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on August 30, 2010 by masterpraz

A number of films have tackled the burning issue of Kashmir on celluloid whether it’s Mani Rathnams ROJA, Ashok Pandit’s underrated SHEEN right to Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s MISSION:KASHMIR. LAMHAA looked like much of the same however the main reason the I had higher than usual expectations from the film was because the director was Rahul Dholakia whose last film PARZANIA tackled the Gujarat with poignancy and sensitivity. Sadly LAMHAA is a let down…

Women directors struggle in Bollywood

Posted in the bad on August 28, 2010 by munna

Bollywood may have changed the way it makes its films but there’s still no changing industry stereotypes about women filmmakers. Women directors in the Mumbai film industry are still few and far between, with only a select group able to break the glass ceiling in what is still a male-dominated industry.

Bhutto: Benazir’s legacy is ill-served by bias in an otherwise admirable film (Guardian)

Posted in the bad, the ugly on August 28, 2010 by Satyam

“Zulfikar Ali Bhutto: Executed, 1979. Shahnawaz Bhutto: Murdered, 1985. Mir Murtaza Bhutto: Assassinated, 1996. Benazir Bhutto: Assassinated, 2007.”

This chilling roll call, which appears on the front cover of Fatima Bhutto’s politicial memoir, Songs of Blood and Sword, reads like a trailer for a Hollywood thriller – so incredulous, that it couldn’t possibly be true. But you can’t make this stuff up.

Anil Kapoor interview

Posted in the bad on August 27, 2010 by Satyam

The first thing that strikes you about Anil Kapoor is his unconventionality. His raffish looks, his choice of films, his endearing character portrayals and lately, his foray into the West are enough to pique curiosity about the actor. He agrees to a chat at his residence, a three-floor bungalow in Juhu, in the Mumbai suburbs, that instantly engulfs you with its riot of colours, gods, friezes, curios, heaps of curious books, his dogs Coke, Bacardi and Feather along with a lot of wood and plants.

My Review of SALT (English, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on August 26, 2010 by masterpraz

I didn’t really think much of Angelina Jolie’s last action movie WANTED, however SALT from veteran director Phillip Noyce (CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER, THE SAINT, THE BONE COLLECTOR) does a pretty good job at making an engrossing and action-packed action thriller.

My take on COP OUT (English, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on August 26, 2010 by masterpraz

I’m a huge fan of the “buddy” movie genre. Films like 48 HOURS, ANOTHER 48 HOURS, LETHAL WEAPON series, STAKEOUT, THE LAST BOY SCOUT, TANGO & CASH right to recent films like MONEY TALKS hold immense repeat value for me over the years, however in today’s time when homage and throwback is the new flavour, I was disappointed that no recent film makers had been able to tap into the full potential of the buddy movie genre. Does COP OUT do the trick? Not 100%, but it gets there 90% and is the best effort I’ve seen in recent years.

On Double meaning songs

Munni Badnam Hui Darling Tere Liye
Vivek Kaul

Sometime back I got chatting with an ex-colleague who thought that the recent hit number “munni badnam hui darling tere liye” was a rather cheap number.

Of course I did not agree with her rather ‘grotesque’ description of what I think is a good fun song.
