Inside Job – documentary on financial meltdown 2007-10

@ satyam, gf, q bhai, sm i thought u might be interested! and for all who got affected or are interested about the FINANCIAL MELTDOWN, its a shocking story and i got very interrested to know about how it happend and indeed did they knew it was going to happen the financial meltdown. Inside Job is a documentary about the financial crisis of 2007-10 by Charles Ferguson. its screened at cannes and releasing soon .. m interested.

One viewer-reporter characterized the film as “rip-snorting [and] indignant [with] support from interviews with professional Cassandra Nouriel Roubini, Barney Frank, George Soros, Eliot Spitzer and others. But the most effective presence,” he continues, “may be the trusted voice of all-American actor Matt Damon, who narrates the furious takedown of the financial services and the government. It’s a fairly bold move by the actor.” The report goes on to speculate that Damon’s participation, from a supporter of President Barack Obama, and the documentary as a whole “may be one more sign that Democratic celebrities are going to push harder against the man they helped elect.”[1] A reviewer writing from Cannes characterized the film as telling “a complex story exceedingly well and with a great deal of unalloyed anger. [It] lays out its essential argument, cogently and convincingly, that the 2008 meltdown was avoidable. … [L]ess familiar faces, including a brothel madam and a therapist who each catered to Wall Street in the bubble years [are also seen, and t]he movie ends not long after Robert Gnaizda, formerly with the Greenlining Institute, a housing advocacy group, characterizes the Obama administration as “a Wall Street government,” a take Mr. Ferguson clearly endorses.”[2]

  2. Thanks rooney, definitely want to check this out…

Aside: I doubt Damon’s narration of this documentary is a sign of any serious pushback against Obama…not least because there is no alternative. i.e. we’re not even in a world where the only alternative to Obama is Romney, it’s Obama versus the tea-party nutters (with moderate Republicans and various democrats too craven to take a stand against them)…the sorts of causes Damon seems to care about simply cannot be better served by any mainstream administration than by the current one.

I don’t fully understand the working of the derivatives and credit swaps we’ve heard so much about. But I’m learning. These are ingenious, computer-driven schemes in which good money can be earn-ed from bad debt, and Wall Street’s Masters of the Universe pocket untold millions while they bankrupt their investors and their companies.

This process is explained in Charles Ferguson’s “Inside Job,” an angry, well-argued documentary about how the American financial industry set out deliberately to defraud the ordinary American investor. The crucial error was to allow financial institutions to trade on their own behalf. Today, many large trading banks are betting against their own customers.

  5. I saw this a couple of weeks ago at a film festival. While it is extremely well-made, I can’t say that it told me anything that I didn’t already know. Perhaps the mechanics of the “derivatives” market was the only concrete piece of information that I didn’t have before viewing the film.
