  1. Aakrosh Looking To Start Better Than Knock Out

    Thursday 14th October 2010 09.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Aakrosh should take the better opening than Knock Out going by the pre release indicators.

Aakrosh was carrying decent reports within the industry and these seem to have fed through to the exhibition sector as Aakrosh has a better chain of single screens than Knock Out and multiplexes are giving the better screens and timings to Aakrosh.

Both films do not have much of an advance but exhibitors report the few enquiries that are coming are mainly for Aakrosh. So Aakrosh may not be a big opener but is likely to be the number choice for cinemagoers this week. Both films will likely have to rely on word of mouth if they are to put up good opening week numbers.

  2. Black Friday: Aakrosh, Knock Out & Ramayana Knocked Out Of Race
    Komal Nahta

Dismal. That’s the word to describe the opening which Knock Out has taken today (October 15). The producers of the Sanjay Dutt and Irrfan Khan starrer may have found solace yesterday when a division bench of the Bombay high court reversed the order of a single bench, staying the release of the film because it was found to be copied from 20th Century Fox’s Hollywood film, Phone Booth. But the joy must’ve been short-lived because barely 15 hours after the division bench permitted the makers to go ahead with the release (but only after they had deposited Rs. 1.5 crore in the court, pending the final disposal of the case filed by the Hollywood studio) came the news that the film had opened to weak houses throughout the length and breadth of the country. There were just 15 people in the auditorium at Velocity multiplex in Indore in the 9.45 a.m. show today.

Knock Out, Aakrosh, Ramayana – The Epic.

If the initial of Knock Out was miserable, the start of Aakrosh was also below the mark. It may not have been as dull as that of Knock Out but the first show collections of the Ajay Devgan and Akshaye Khanna starrer were far from impressive. At the same Velocity multiplex in Indore, Aakrosh saw an attendance of just 109 people in the morning show. An sms received from a leading exhibitor of Gujarat reads: ‘Both movies very bad opening. Knock Out is worst ever seen.’

When star cast films like Aakrosh and Knock Out have opened so badly, one can well imagine the state of the animation film, Ramayana The Epic. As it is, animation films are not popular among the traditional audience in India. Ketan Mehta’s film on Ramayana has firstly got very few shows in the multiplexes. Besides, its opening show’s collections are so miserable that it would be a wonder if it is able to pull through for the entire week.

  3. Aakrosh And Knock Out Open To Poor Response

    Friday 15th October 2010 13.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Aakrosh and Knock Out took very dull openings today considering both had good face value. Aakrosh was around 30-35% at multiplexes this morning while Knock Out registered 15-20% collections. The early numbers from single screens are also pretty dull which is a downer for Aakrosh considering the promos showed plenty of action.

It seems that both films will find it tough going at the box office as opening levels are pretty low and even good word of mouth can only take them to a certain level. The surprise of the season is Do Dooni Chaar which is recording very good occupancies though on limited shows. Its first show today at PVR Ambience Gurgaon recorded 55% occupancy which was much better than both of the major new releases Aakrosh and Knock Out.

  4. Off topic but interesting:

    The Sharks of the Trade

Their over-hyped, over-priced film may have been a dud at the box-office, but the film’s producer and the studio that released it both made a fat packet off this botched romance. Toplining one of Bollywood’s most popular young actors, the light-eyed dancing sensation, the movie was pitched as an international crossover project filmed mostly in English, and also starred an exotic Latin American leading lady.

Despite the film’s dismal theatrical performance, the star’s shrewd producer papa made a neat sum from having presold the movie to a ‘big’ local studio, which in turn was also protected financially because it sold the film further at hefty margins to distributors.

And yet, when it comes to paying those who worked on the film, neither the film’s producer nor the studio is willing to dig into their deep pockets. A reputed publicity designer who created the film’s poster design, CD covers, hoardings and assorted promotional material has been running between the producer and studio, urging them to pay him the Rs 40 lakh that is owed to him.

Each party insists the money must be recovered from the other. Easily Rs 50 crore richer on the movie, the bald producer has said all bills must be cleared by the studio that took over the movie. The studio, in turn, says the producer must pay since he commissioned the job in the first place.

For all the talk of corporatisation and transparency in dealings, the sad truth is that Bollywood still operates mostly on credit, and there are enough sharks that will exploit professionals who continue to defer their fees and work ‘in good faith’.

  5. Reviews of Aakrosh seem to be encouraging and were it not for Navratri would have deifinitley seen it in theatre this weekend.

    • yeah as I said earlier today I would like to check this out.. it’s not playing nearby but I don’t rule out a drive here on Sun possibly..

    • Reviews for Aakrosh are mainly average to bad – be forewarned it is apparently a remake of Mississippi Burning and not about honor killings.

      Review: Aakrosh
Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films, NDTV
      Friday, October 15, 2010

      Rating: 2.5/5

The plagiarising trend continues with this week’s second Hindi release, Aakrosh.

More than 15 years ago, I had interviewed writer Robin Bhatt on lifting stories from Hollywood. When I asked him where his talent lies, he said: My talent lies in knowing what to steal. So Aakrosh, directed by Priyadarshan and co-written by Bhatt and Akash Khurana, is a faithful remake of Alan Parker’s Oscar-nominated drama Mississippi Burning.

In that film, two FBI agents go to the American South to investigate the disappearance of three civil rights activists. Here two CBI agents go to a village to investigate the disappearance of three medical students.

The racial conflict of Mississippi Burning is converted to a caste conflict. The Ku Klux Klan becomes the Shool Sena, a hate group, which kills a lower-caste boy and his friends for daring to elope with an upper-caste girl. The two officers, one a Dalit and the other a Brahmin, one a stickler for protocol and the other a loose cannon, fight against the murderous upper-caste establishment.

Aakrosh stays on track as long as Priyadarshan stays faithful to Mississippi Burning. But trouble starts the minute the writers get original.

So Pratap, played by Ajay Devgn, must have a tedious love track with a strange, out-of-place love song. There is an item number and over-blown action sequences—one requires Pratap to stand on top of a speeding car and in another, he crosses train tracks by jumping underneath a moving train.

Even today, Mississippi Burning remains a powerfully riveting drama because it made racism and the plight of African-Americans horrifically palpable.

The villains were all seemingly good folk with a vicious streak, which made them even scarier. The menace was profound yet understated.

In Aakrosh, of course the bad guys are all obviously bad. Paresh Rawal plays a corrupt cop—in his first scene, he is discussing the virginal girl he wants that evening and giving instructions that there be no condoms.

The film’s tone is loud and inconsistent. Priyadarshan wants to marry hard-hitting drama with thrills so one minute, we’re marveling at the nicely crafted chase sequences, including one on bicycles, and the next we move into realistic mode with hangings and arson.

Also, much of the traction in Mississippi Burning comes from the constant tug-of-war between the two agents. Here that prickly relationship never comes alive. We don’t see them as opponents. And after the relentless ugliness, which includes women being brutalised, Priyadarshan constructs an end, which leaves us with little to be hopeful about.

Aakrosh has moments of power but most of these are copied, some even down to the dialogue. I recommend you see the original instead.

      http://movies.ndtv.com/movie_Review.aspx?id=556

  6. Aakrosh is getting mostly positive reviews. I don’t see much boxoffice appreciation due to various non-compelling factor to lure audience to theater, but yeah movie is good for sure.

  7. B.O. update: ‘Aakrosh’ dull, ‘Knock Out’ poor start

    - By Taran Adarsh, October 15, 2010 – 21:50 IST

The two major releases of the week, AAKROSH and KNOCK OUT, both starring known names, started on a dull note across the country. Call it the affect of the pre-Diwali phase [film business slips considerably during these days] or bad luck, but despite aggressive promotion undertaken by the respective producers, the opening numbers of the two films were way below the mark. While AAKROSH had a 40% start at places, KNOCK OUT was 15% to 20% generally. The third release, RAMAYANA [animation], was dismal as well.

Saturday and Sunday are crucial for the three films, since next Friday will witness the release of four new films and if the business isn’t encouraging during the weekend and subsequently on weekdays, the films will be left with very little screen time at cineplexes next week.

  8. Chennai Box Office – Oct 8-10
    Tuesday, 12 October , 2010, 17:37

Rajinikanth’s Enthiran continues to rock the CBO. The film has netted approximately Rs 6.30 crore from 45 odd Chennai screens in 10 days : a new record.

It’s marketing at its best, as the film was able to create and sustain the hype. Clearly all other films put together in Chennai would not have collected even 15 per cent of the total net of Enthiran!

For the sake of a top five, here are the others on the list. At number two is the Arya-Nayanthara starrer Boss Engira Baskaran, which has made a strong comeback.

Mahesh Babu’s Khaleeja is at number three. The film has taken a decent opening though it carries mixed reports.

In fourth place is the Ranbir-Priyanka starrer Anjaana Anjaani and in last place is Crook.

  9. IBOS:

Box Office: Aakrosh grabs the Friday lead over Knock Out
    Saturday, October 16, 2010

Neither of films this week has impressed the Indian filmgoers much. But the Ajay Devgan-Bipasha Basu starrer Aakrosh has grabbed a better box office opening than Sanjay Dutt’s Knock Out on Friday. The opening day of Aakrosh has outperformed KO by a margin of 3-4: 1, to the tune nearing 3 crores gross, whereas Knock Out is looking at about 1 crores in gross collection.

Last week’s Emran Hashmi fare Crook is a flop with barely 9-10 crores in gross. Do Dooni Char, the Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Kapoor middle aged fare, too could not find much appreciation collection around Rs. 4 crores.

Hollywood’s Julia Roberts fare Eat Pray Love has had an underwhelming collection week in India. Ironically Eat Pray Love has gotten beat by Resident Evil: Afterlife in India atleast.

Rajnikanth’s Enthiran has had about a 50% drop in week 2 across all versions. Interestingly, the Hindi version of Endhiran (Robot) appears the steadier in its prints. Its Telugu collections were affected somewhat by Mahesh Babu’s big fare Khaleja which has taken over a number of screen in Andhra Pradesh past week.

    • That opening number for Aakrosh is stunningly low.. how miserable this audience is!

    • I’ve been getting info on this from elsewhere too. Enthiran doesn’t seem to be all that strong at small centers. But interestingly it doesn’t seem to have the legs that I thought it would. I think it’s better than Sivaji in this regard but not a very whole lot. It’s clearly a case of massive initial with decent or better than decent though not spectacular follow through. It’s basically like Bachchan’s Hum deal in that sense. I am a bit surprised because I think Robot is infinitely superior to Sivaji. Then again what some of us have liked about Enthiran, the deconstructive aspect of things, might not have had as much appeal for everyone. Again this is a very successful film, just not the historic one it might have seemed to be at the outset. The same goes for Sivaji. and of course the way these things are hyped beyond belief in the media it’s very hard to decide what’s a super start and what’s a historic one. In Hindi parlance you could sell OSO as historic but then when a Ghajini or a 3I come along you see the difference. In fairness I don’t doubt that both Sivaji and Enthiran has singular starts but I also know the media hype game rather well and especially when it’s aided and abetted by the Shankar blitz! Interestingly Sify have also called it a hit when one might have expected superhit or something at this point. If it remains very steady they will do the upgrade. It’s just revealing that they haven’t done so right away.

  10. Aakrosh Poor Opening Crook Poor Week One

    Saturday 16th October 2010 09.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Aakrosh opened to a poor 30-35% response and the film did not improve through the day. Business at single screens was slightly better but still well below the mark. It seems Aakrosh will find it tough going at the box office due to the limited entertainment in the film.

Knock Out was very poor with 15-20% collections on first day and it has little chance at the box office as opening is too low and will need a huge turnaround.

Ramayana the animation film had awful collections on day one.

Crook had first week of around 11 crore nett. The film fared very poor all over. FLOP

Do Dooni Chaar picked up and grossed around 3 crore nett in week one. The film is doing well in the Delhi/NCR area.

Anjaana Anjaani dropped in week two with around 6.50 crore nett collcetions. The two week total is 38.50 crore nett and the film will finish around the 41 crore nett mark. ABOVE AVERAGE

Robot was steady on the lower side with around 5.50 crore nett collections in week two. The two week total is 16.75 crore nett. The film has done average business in the Maharashtra area. BELOW AVERAGE

    • how kind these folks are on Anjaana Anjaani! Here’s Taran as well:

      http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/trade/top5/index.html

    • AA went from 32.25 cr in week 1 to 6.5 cr in week 2 – complete rejection-80% drop.

Yet BOI is trying to whitewash the AA results when it is obvious the movie is a Flop.

BTW, BOI is still underreprting Hindi Robot but has moved it from Flop status to Below Average. LOL

      • It’s pretty clear that the nri genre is played out. Anjaana Anjaani is hardly the worst film around, although it has no grip and is flat, but this is the performance of a turkey. Even grim films like sarkar raja or more serious fare like delhi6 made in the same range a year or two ago…

        • yeah it’s remarkable that supposed ‘disasters’ like D6 and Raavan made as much as BeH and Anjaana (I don’t really by the final 41 crore gross number). Now of course D6 and Raavan were bigger and more important films but it’s surely some index of stardom if your disaster in a ‘different’ subject is not too far off from a supposedly decent runner (BeH and Anjaana..) in a much more multiplex-friendly genre!

        • I thought IHLS is bad, Anjaana Anjaani is simply unwatchable. There are some funny dialogues here and there but overall I will prefer to watch Bigg Boss episode than Anjaana Anjaani

          **Spoiler**
Aakrosh is better but made with laziness. Even though it similar to Mississippi Burning but it is contextualize well. I think ending was farce. When the main protoganist was shown idealistic then what was at the end after the court verdict. Was he not aware the quantum of punishment in Indian judicial system?

  11. Bhalo_Manush Says:

Sad to see BO performance of Aakrosh. Watched it in kolkata on friday itself. Theater was 90% full. May be it was due to Durga puja in kolkata. So not doing good business in other parts of india. Superb movie. Brilliant performance by the star cast. After Khakee i enjoyed this thriller so much in the theater.

Btw took two of my friends wid me. They even did not know which film they are going to see. Just went to the theater on my request. After we came back we were watching tv and then the trailer of Aakrosh came on tv saying releasing on 15th October. My friends were surprised that they watched the movie first day. One of my friend said that he has never seen any movie on first day in recent times. I said well blame it on the producers that they did not promote it well. Ajay Devgan is busy promoting Golmaal 3 instead of this one.

  12. if D6 and RAAVANA made 41 crore then remember my friend budget of these movies. it is laughble to compare D6 and BeH.

    • they didn’t make 41 crores, they were in the mid-30s. The budget though is a different matter (I already said those films were big). I was referring to audience participation.

  13. i saw the movie aakrosh in cinemax i.e. 80 to 90% in 9to12 show but i cant understand why movie not click to box office . this is a very good movie.

  15. Can Prithviraj capture Malabar?
    2010-10-14 16:53:01

The trade in Kerala is eagerly looking forward to the release of Prithviraj’s Anwar releasing in 110 screens this Friday (October 15).

Prithviraj is doing the film with stylish director Amal Neerad of Big-B and Sagar alias Jacky fame, and has Mamta Mohandas, Prakash Raj, Lal and others in the supporting cast. The film has been given a U/A censor certificate with some cuts, due to its theme which is based on terrorism.

The songs from the film by Gopi Sundar are chartbusters. Everything seems to be going right for Anwar as it is said to be an “action packed stylish entertainer with good music and a neat message”.

Straight from the shoot of Urumi in Malsej Ghat Pritvi flew down to Thiruvananthapuram and is promoting the film aggressively through television channels.

The trade wants it to be a hit, as they are building Prithviraj as an alternative to Mammootty and Mohanlal. A leading distributor remarked: “Prithviraj is the future of Malayalam commercial cinema”.

His last two releases Pokkiri Raja and Raavanan did good business in Kerala. He is the only actor who has emerged in the last five years who has the magical star power of M & M. I really hope Anwar opens well, it augers well for our cinema”.

For Prithviraj to emerge as a superstar he has to capture all three territories that make Kerala film trade – Travancore, Kochi and Malabar.

According to veteran theatre owner Hamza: ” Prithviraj is popular with the youth audiences in Travancore and Kochi areas but to emerge as an equal to M & M, he has to make his presence felt in Malabar, the citadel of Malayalam films. He is popular in Travancore and Kochi areas, but is yet to make inroads into Malabar which forms 45 percent of the total box-office collections, while Travancore with 30 percent and Kochi with 25 percent lags behind”.

In short, Prithviraj has to capture the Malabar area box-office which is controlled by M & M who has a very strong fan base in this area. Prithviraj understood the importance of Malabar, when he rode piggy back on Mammootty with Pokkiri Raja, which was a huge hit in this area. From early days of Malayalam cinema itself Malabar is most important and actors like Prem Nazir and later Jayan were successful here. From 1990′s Malabar has become the impregnable fortress of Mammootty and Mohanlal.

For the rising young star Anwar is the ideal film for him to make his presence felt in Malabar. Remember Kozhikode, Kannur and Manjeri in Malabar area feature among 10 highest grossing stations in Kerala. Prithviraj has to make inroads into M & M territory, if he has to be the next superstar of Kerala.

  16. Knock Out gets producers edgy

The low collections of the film are posing some problems for a couple of Sanju’s producers, but David Dhawan is confident of Munnabhai…

    Subhash K Jha

Posted On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 02:32:03 AM

For Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the box-office collections of Knock Out were as low as 0.58 crore, 0.47 crore and 0.84 crore respectively, one of the lowest collections for a Sanjay Dutt starrer, ever. Knock Out producer Sohail Maklai, a close friend of Dutt’s, is in shock. “I don’t know what went wrong.”

One now hears that Apoorva Lakhia’s Mumbai Taxi Service, about corruption in the police and starring Sanjay Dutt in the lead has been shelved. This apparently happened at the behest of producers Ashtavinayak.

Another Dutt starrer Chatur Singh Two Star, based on the Pink Panther series and directed by Ajay Chandhok, had been shot in South Africa with much fanfare; it is now stalled.

With American studios tightening the noose on illegitimate derivations and adaptations, the makers of Chatur Singh are now willing to let the film remain in the cans. Why would they want to cough up a fortune for copyright infringement?

One of Dutt’s friends says, “The producers of Sanju’s last two films Lamhaa and Knock Out have lost huge amounts of money. Bunty Walia, a close friend of Dutt who produced Lamhaa, is on the verge of bankruptcy. Sanju is a fantastic star. He just needs to get back into shape.

And he needs to stop relying on wrong advisers. The people close to him are alienating him from the reality about his career. Sanju needs to realise that he is not choosing the right projects.”

However all is not lost. The next Munnabhai film starts in May 2011. And before that, David Dhawan begins shooting his comedy, Rascal, starring Dutt and Ajay Devgn.

Dhawan is oddly optimistic and says, “Dutt is my hero. A great actor and a greater human being. And a friend in need is a friend indeed. I started my career as a director with him. Now, we’ll again create a dhamaka together. You mark my words. Sanju will bounce back.”

  17. Aakrosh is a great movie. i watched on friday it was brilliant high performance of Ajay devgan. this is one of the best films of ajay devgan and akshay khanna. ajay devgan worked hard this movie.
he is one of the greatest actors ever in bollywood. i hope Aakrosh will be blockbuster next few days.

  18. haybeyare Says:

Wow! what a great movie!. did you see Aakrosh. one of the best films in 2010. action thriller Ajay devgan was a good performer. he looks amazing this movie like once upon a time in mumbai, Rajneeti.

  21. Aakrosh And Knock Out Fare Badly

    Monday 18th October 2010 15.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Aakrosh and Knock Out fared badly at the box office. Knock Out had extremely bad weekend with only 2.50 crore nett collections. The approx breakdown was 80 lakhs, 70 lakhs and 1 crore for the first three days. The film is a big flop and is unlikely to even 5 crore nett lifetime business.

Aakrosh was not as bad but still very poor with around 7.50 crore nett over the weekend. The breakdown was 2.50 crore, 2.25 crore and 2.75 crore for the first three days. The film will do around 10.50 crore nett over its first week.

The other release of the week Ramayana had shows cancelled at many places.

  22. Taran:

    Black Friday

    October 20, 2010 – 08:00 IST

This qualifies as the worst weekend of 2010. The business hit an all-time low last Friday. Several cineplexes were as good as empty. At places, no audience led to no shows being performed. Post DABANGG, one assumed that the business was heading Northwards, but the numbers of AAKROSH, KNOCK OUT and RAMAYANA [animation] proved us wrong. The numbers have come as a rude shock. I am sure, those associated with AAKROSH and KNOCK OUT are shocked and speechless as well. The films have been knocked out and how!

Both AAKROSH and KNOCK OUT were aggressively promoted prior to their release, so how does one explain the poor occupancy at ticket windows? The question of positive/negative reports arise only if people walk into the auditorium, watch a film and pass judgment. AAKROSH had a strong word of mouth, while KNOCK OUT, though it didn’t garner great reviews, was appreciated by those who watched it. So why didn’t the occupancy at cineplexes improve/show a jump during the course of the weekend?

The distributors I spoke to are at a loss of words. Yes, the pre-Diwali period is considered dull [film business hits a low before Diwali], but no one expected the business to be so bad. With four new films hitting the screens next Friday, the fate of AAKROSH and KNOCK OUT is sealed.

What does the failure of AAKROSH and KNOCK OUT indicate? Does it indicate that the audience is not in a mood to watch dark films that portray reality [AAKROSH]? Does it signify that the viewers are averse to watching Hollywood rip offs [KNOCK OUT]? Does it indicate that we should be churning out only mindless fares in the name of entertainment? If top notch stars and fantastic promotion cannot guarantee a healthy opening weekend, imagine the plight of films which boast of no stars or lesser known names.

  23. Endhiran (Tamil) To Emerge In Top Five Overseas

    Wednesday 20th October 2010 09.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Aakrosh and Knock Out fared extremely poorly in International markets with only UAE showing some collection with $150,000 and $70,000 respectively. Aakrosh managed to gross $325,000 and Knock Out $125,000 from all the International markets.

Anjaani Anjaani is coming to the end of its run and is likely to finish with $2.60 million approx. The contributions being $725,000 from UK, $875,000 from North America. $600,000 from UAE and $400,000 from the rest of the world.

The Tamil film Endhiran is likely to be amongst the top five grossing Indian films in overseas markets. The film probably hit the $10 million mark, a feat which has only been achieved by My Name Is Khan, Three Idiots , Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and Om Shanti Om. The film may emerge amongst the top five grossing films ever in Malaysia. TIME BLOCKBUSTER

  24. How come there is so much silence on Indian BO of Enthiran after a flurry of
BO figures on steroids following the first weekend?

    • after week 1 they’ve all been focusing on the global collections! Sound familiar?! Sify gave its report after 3 days, 7 days but then stopped. They haven’t updated this week though they always do so on Tue or certainly by Wed. Behindwoods also haven’t updated after a ten day report.

It is as I said earlier a very successful film but its run isn’t quite going to match the ‘historic’ hype. The small centers in TN have been relatively weak for this and major centers though trending well are not stupendous.

The reason is that this is a fantastic film (to my mind certainly) that most people have enjoyed but the more human Rajni element is missing for the truest fans.
