There were three new Hindi releases this week in Daayen Ya Baahen, Maalik Ek and Nakshatra and as expected they opened to empty houses. The turnout was 1-2% with Nakshatra having the best release.
Jhootha Hi Sahi is likely to remain the leader at multiplexes in its second week even though its business is poor as there is no competition. Single screens will be giving Rakht Charitra and Hisss another week’s run as there is nothing to replace them.
Robot (Hindi) is the only bright spot which is continuing with steady collections though on the lower side.
As usual the pre-Diwali week is likely to be one of the worst of the year in terms of the total volume of business of all films showing.
This Diwali will witness an interesting clash between Action Replay and Golmaal 3 where the weekend business can be higher for either film. The last four Diwali’s have seen a one sided affair with Don (2006), On Shanti Om (2007), Golmaal Returns (2008) and Blue (2009) all easily coming out on top on Diwali weekends.
It had looked a one horse race when the first promos came out a few weeks back with Golmaal 3 making a much better impact and it looked like Golmaal 3 will have 75-80% of the Diwali market leaving Action Replay 20-25% but things have changed since then.
The biggest factor for the change is that the music of Action Replay is faring better and it has a hit song in ‘Zor Ka Jhatka’. Golmaal 3 still has edge as it has better promotion and a ready market with viewers who enjoyed Golmaal and Golmaal Returns likely to visit the theatres again but now it looks like Golmaal 3 will have 60% of the market and Action Replay getting 40% on day one with a week to go.
At the moment it seems that Golmaal 3 should open better but the gap will not be big and content will come into play on the first day itself. Last year All The Best had the best content but Blue was so far ahead in the opening that it took All The Best 3-4 days to catch up with Blue which meant All The Best lost out on a huge chunk of its business despite appreciation. Infact despite All The Best being much appreciated and Blue not being liked at all the lifetime distributor share of Blue remained higher in all circuits except Mumbai, CP Berar and CI on the strength of its initial.
The music of Action Replay has put it into the race an with the presence of Akshay Kumar, the Friday could even go to Action Replay. But with a week to go, the likely scenario is Golmaal 3 having the edge in morning then content coming into play. Without the hit music it may have been the same scenario as last year where even if Action Replay had good content it would have taken it too long to catch Golmaal 3.
B.O. update: New releases open to dismal houses
- By Taran Adarsh, October 29, 2010 – 20:01 IST
The new releases – NAKSHATRA, DAAYEN YA BAAYEN and MAALIK EK – opened to dismal houses on Friday. The response was as low as 3% and 5% and is not likely to improve over the weekend. DAAYEN YA BAAYEN and MAALIK EK had a limited release, while NAKSHATRA had a slightly extensive release as compared to the two films.
The pre-Diwali phase is considered the weakest period for film business and even holdover titles like JHOOTHA HI SAHI and RAKHT CHARITRA remained thanda on the first day of their second week.
Jhootha Hi Sahi Rakht Charitra Hisss 8th Day Business
Saturday 30th October 2010 11.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
The three releases of last week remained the top scorers at the box office at the start of their second week as new releases saw awful collections.
Jhootha Hi Sahi had business of around 50 lakhs and showed a 70% drop from its first day.
Rakht Charitra was the steadiest with a 60% drop and business around the 40 lakhs mark.
Hisss fell badly as it dropped 75-80% from its first day. All three films have been rejected but have managed to stay in the theatres for an extra week due to no competition.
Endhiran (Tamil) has set the box office on fire in the South and Overseas. The Hindi version Robot managed average business in circuits like Mumbai and CP Berar but flopped in Delhi, Punjab and Bengal. The approx expected lifetime figures for the film are as follows.
Endhiran (Tamil)
Distributor Share – 90 crore
Nett – 125 crore
Gross – 130 crore
Robo (Telugu)
Distributor Share – 25 crore
Nett – 40 crore
Gross – 43 crore
Robot (Hindi)
Distributor Share – 10 crore
Nett – 21.50 crore
Gross – 29 crore
The combined totals will be 125 crore distributor share (record for Indian film), 186.50 crore nett and 202 crore gross.
Endhiran (Tamil) will do $11m (49 crore) overseas with $5.5 million from Far East, $2.5 from North America, $1.5 million from Middle East and $1.5 million from the rest of the world.
The Hindi and Telugu versions of Endhiran will add another $1m from overseas.
The final worldwide gross total of all versions of the film will be INR 255.50 crore ($57.5 million). Worldwide they are the second highest figures ever for an Indian film after Three Idiots which did INR 339.50 crore ($74.5 million). Dabangg released earlier this year is third as it grossed INR 212 crore ($47 million). Three Idiots was released on 1800 prints worldwide, Dabangg was 2000 prints while the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions of Endhiran had a combined total of 2500 prints worldwide.
The only black spot for the film was the Hindi version which accounted for 800 prints but did not give a return like the other versions. In India Robot (Hindi) was 750 prints which was far too much as dubbed films do not have a big market. Last year the dubbed version of 2012 (Pralay Ki Shuruaat) was released on just 400 prints and grossed 28 crore nett and remains the highest grossing dubbed film. Robot (Hindi) is second on the list of dubbed films but release was more like outright Hindi film rather than a dubbed film.
Great performance by Endhiran.
Obviously, didnt break 3I record in India or overseas tho distribution share might be higher overall.
Incredible performance tho doesnt match the over-hyped orgasmic commentary from the first weekend.
The TN numbers at least as reported by BOI seem to me suspect unless persuaded otherwise. The film has done extremely well but I am not sure if I buy a number that huge. specially with TN ticket prices. even allowing for the fact that there is not much difference between gross and net there.
The box office figures are majorily from two southern states TN and Andhra. 3-i/Dabanng box office was from all states. Give credit to the guy who achieved it at the age of 60+.
no one’s denying him any credit Ted.. it’s like the Dabangg debate.. whatever the film achieved was stupendous but it did not do as well as Ghajini on the trending.. that’s just a fact..
Look at the BOI numbers again.. 125 crores just out of TN seems beyond belief.. but also compare these with Andhra numbers… the film is doing 40 crores there.. which is of course huge but it’s not keeping pace with Anniyan there (2005) which did probably 50 crores there.. now this is an educated guess but for a Rajni blockbuster I find it hard to believe that Andhra could be doing only one third the gross of TN. Anniyan did the same more or less in TN and Andhra. Now the latter overperformed for this film. Some felt it could have done more in TN. But there was relative parity. This ratio doesn’t make much sense to me. Specially when ticket prices in TN are on average way lower than Andhra! Again I am willing to be persuaded but I haven’t seen such numbers from any Southern source. To reiterate an older point whatever tax advantage there is in TN (gross almost equals net) is more than balanced out by ridiculously low prices in single/double screens and even in multiplexes relative to those elsewhere in the country. I’ve heard that Enthiran wasn’t that strong in smaller centers to begin with, nothing historic at the very least. How does one get to a 125 crore number out of TN? Southern numbers are even more unreliable than Northern ones but the point is I haven’t seen anything from them yet along these lines. Unless I’ve missed something.
Eros acquires worldwide rights of ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and ‘Game’
Mumbai, Nov 1 : Eros International Media Ltd (Eros International) has acquired the worldwide rights of Excel Entertainment’s forthcoming releases – Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and Abhinay Deo’s ‘Game’.
The company has scheduled the release of these two highly anticipated films in 2011, a release today said.
With ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ a road film, director Zoya Akhtar has achieved a casting coup of Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin. A young fun film shot largely across Spain. The flick has already been creating a huge buzz and is expected to woo audiences next year.
‘Game’, a whodunit with twists and turns, stars Abhishek Bachchan, Kangana Ranaut, Sarah Jane Dias, Jimmy Shergill, Shahana Goswami, Gauhar Khan, Boman Irani and Anupam Kher. Directed by Abhinay Deo and with dialogues by Farhan Akhtar, ‘Game’ promises to be a slick edge-of-the-seat thriller, the release said.
If last week was bad, this week was terrible. The footfalls at cineplexes fell alarmingly. The business was shockingly poor all through the weekend and also on weekdays. What can one attribute this to? Pre-Diwali week? Lack of interest in new films? Better options on TV? I feel all these factors and more.
A lot of people feel that television is getting bigger and bigger with each passing day and the presence of Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar on television has made a dent in business. A section of the audience also attributes the dwindling box-office returns to the poor quality of films. You can’t expect viewers to watch each and every film and rightly so. Besides, the fact that most movies are premiered on television within a month or two from the date of theatrical release has also made viewers pick and choose the films they want to watch in theatres.
The high ticket rates are another deterrent. Viewers don’t mind shelling out Rs. 300 per ticket for content-based films, but expecting viewers to spend Rs. 150 or Rs. 200 for art house cinema or on films’ starring lesser known actors is foolhardy.
But the Diwali week can prove a turnaround in business. Both ACTION REPLAYY and GOLMAAL 3 are keenly anticipated. Both star A-list stars. Both are helmed by successful directors, with an enviable track record. Both are expected to end the dry spell at the box-office.
A lot of people ask me if two or more films can co-exist in the Diwali week. Of course, two films can, not three. Provided both are rich in content. Let’s hope the two movies spread light in this hour of darkness.
Box Office: Action Replayy looks to unseat Golmaal; advance booking report
Wednesday, November 03, 2010
Diwali box office isn’t set to be historic looking at advance bookings for neither releases this week, one a multistarrer (Golmaal), the other a solo Akshay Kumar fare Action Replayy, are extraordinary in advance. In the early going the bookings are below expectations in the range of 18-20% for each. Golmaal a multistarrer led by Ajay Devgan, Mithun Chakroborty etc. has a slight edge in some centers by 15-20% while the Akshay Kumar-Aishwarya Rai solo fare has the edge in few others. But overall neither has set the box office on fire in advance.
Many insiders believe in the long run the Vipul Shah directed Action Replayy will win out over Golmaal in India and overseas but the major USP of Diwali weekend is registering the bumper weekend across the country which usually has the bulk of Indian consumers in the highest willing-to-spend mode they tend to be in compared to the course of the rest of the year. This weekend has historically set opening records for even ordinary fares and releases in the past. If neither of the film capitalizes on that bonanza possibility over next 72 hours it will be a lost opportunity of sorts as occupancies and collections get elevated by default this time of the year.
An argument can be made that the films are similar in pitch and audience may be divided. That having an action thriller opposite a romantic comedy may be better on Diwali. But Diwali week usually prefers positive, frothy films reflecting the seasonal mood and both films fit the bill here with a few differences. One is a mass comedy with a well known Hindi title (Golmaal), the other a romcom with English (Action Replay). Golmaal infact is a comedy franchise by now, having had two successes in a row, and featuring old timers like Mithun. And Action Replayy is also in a similar mould and targetting a more wholesome crowd with popular music so it just may be that come Friday, both or atleast one film will get the audience going in big way, unless it is, as mentioned above a case of divided audience due to similarity in pitch. A big advance for a film would’ve ensured a recordbreaking opening week as ticket prices do go up on Diwali.
The costs and pricing for both films are in similar ballpark.
Last year on Diwali, an Ajay Devgan co-starring ensemble cast comedy (All the Best) ended up outmaneuvering Akshay Kumar-led action-thriller Blue as well as a Salman Khan drama (Mr. and Mrs. Khanna).
Golmaal 3 has taken the lead over Action Replay at the advance booking ticket counters. The advance booking of both films is not huge but that has been the case of most films this year. The advance of Golmaal 3 can be called good in Mumbai and Gujarat.
Golmaal 3 was always likely to lead in Mumbai and Gujarat as the earlier Rohit Shetty comedies Golmaal, Golmaal Returns and All The Best did their best business in these areas and also comedies have better market especially in Gujarat.
But the telling story comes from Punjab which is an Akshay Kumar circuit but Golmaal 3 has the lead in advance at a centre like Ludhiana. The advance for Friday at Wave Ludhiana from the major screen as of close of business on Tuesday is below.
Action Replay 86 tickets sold from a potential 1824
Golmaal Returns 309 tickets sold from a potential 1824
There is one day left till the release of Action Replay and Golmaal 3 and it is pretty certain that Golmaal 3 will score over Action Replay over the weekend unless the the latter has good word of mouth and Golmaal 3 has poor content.
Golmaal has had 3 tickets sold for one of Action Replay at the advance booking counters. In Mumbai circuit the ratio is even better for Golmaal 3.
Action Replay is looking a rare case in that its an Akshay Kumar film that will be depending on word of mouth. Normally Akshay Kumar films fly out of the traps.
Action Replay may turn out be his lowest opener in terms of day one occupancy since Jaan-E-Mann in 2006 if we discount 8×10 Tasveer.
Golmaal 3 is looking very strong in Mumbai but the test will be outside the circuit as films like Golmaal, Golmaal Returns and All The Best have under performed outside Mumbai. Normally Mumbai circuit gives 30-35% of all India share but for Golmaal Returns it was 45% and for Golmaal and All The Best it was over 50%.

Last year on Diwali, an Ajay Devgan co-starring ensemble cast comedy (All the Best) ended up outmaneuvering Akshay Kumar-led action-thriller Blue as well as a Salman Khan drama (Mr. and Mrs. Khanna).

Golmaal 3 Leads Action Replay In Advance Booking
Wednesday 3rd November 2010 14.00 IST

Golmaal 3 To Lead Over Diwali Weekend
Thursday 4th November 2010 11.00 IST
