New Year wishes…

Posted in the ugly on December 31, 2010 by Satyam

This somewhat cheesy moment perhaps matches my own sense when it comes to New Year greetings and the like.. nonetheless wish everyone the best..
The actor here is Raj Kiran, who looked promising for a while in the early 80s and then faded away. Here the hapless guy is getting upstaged by the rather nasty-looking Shakti Kapoor when he is not co-crooning with the rather forgettable actress..

here is a hilariously bad song from Kuruvi which has actually little to do with the new year (!) but which becomes another absurdly hyperbolic ‘build-up’ moment for Vijay in a film which one would wish to experience less than water-boarding. I suppose Trisha makes this video somewhat tolerable!

subtitled version which couldn’t be embedded
couldn’t find a video here but another ‘bad’ new year song from the 80s Mohan starrer Oh Maane Maane.

A quick note on NO PROBLEM (Hindi, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on December 31, 2010 by masterpraz

Anees Bazmee has gotten the title of a “hit” director as almost everything he’s directed in his career has turned into gold. PYAAR TO HONA HI THA, DEEWANGEE, NO ENTRY, WELCOME, and SINGH IS KINNG. There has been the odd glitch along the way long-delayed Govinda starrer SANDWICH (not a bad film) and the presumably shelved BOURNE IDENTITY remake BENAAM with Ajay Devgan. His next release NO PROBLEM looked like a no-brainer all the way and most people were certain this was a “given” hit in many ways. However NO PROBLEM turns out to be a surprisingly disapointing comedy which takes the viewer completely for granted.

SRK in Krrish 2 after Hrithik in Don 2?

Posted in the bad on December 29, 2010 by Satyam

LINK

Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan have been bonding big time for a while now. Their personal rapport is likely to extend to a professional level as well. King Khan has been offered a role in the Roshans’ home production Krrish 2.

Says a source, “Shah Rukh and Hrithik are the best of pals in the industry today. It was but natural for Roshan Sr to etch a role in his son’s flick for his buddy as well. SRK’s character in the film will have shades of gray to it.”

My Review of TEES MAAR KHAN (Hindi, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on December 29, 2010 by masterpraz

If there was one film that was highly awaited in 2010 it was Farah Khan’s TEES MAAR KHAN and for a huge number of reasons. Firstly Khan signed Akshay for the title role over her usual favourite of 2 films MAIN HOON NA and OM SHANTI OM, both of which were blockbusters. Secondly Akshay Kumar donning the “Khan” mantle was seen by some SRK fans as a direct taunt to the “King” (Khan that is) and lastly because it promised to be a star-studded bonanza about a con-man conducting the biggest heist of his career. The cherry on top was of course Katrina’s Shelia and her “jawani” which was an absolute rage. So does the movie live up to hype? Sadly not as TEES MAAR KHAN is Farah Khan’s weakest film to date.

My thoughts on LSD: LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA (Hindi, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on December 26, 2010 by masterpraz

It’s very rarely that we truly get a “path breaking” film in Hindi cinema though it’s very easily one of the most over-used and abused words around. Director Dibakar Bannerjee who proved why story is king with KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, screenplay is king with OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE now makes one of Hindi cinemas most truly path breaking films to date and shows why technique is king with LSD: LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA which will without a shred of doubt be unlike anything else you’ve seen in Hindi cinema before.

Quick note on ANJAANA ANJAANI (Hindi, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on December 26, 2010 by masterpraz

On paper this probably sounded like a safe bet. Sajid Nadiadwala as the lavish producer, Siddarth Raj Anand directing Ranbir once more after the success of BACHCHNA AE HASEENO, a few peppy songs and a sexy Priyanka Chopra with a DOSTANA hangover and you’ve got your multiplex rom-com.

RGV Ki Jai… RAKTA CHARITRA-2 (Hindi, 2010)

Posted in Refugee on December 26, 2010 by masterpraz

I enjoyed RGV’s RAKTA CHARITRA-1 a lot and the end of the first part left me anticipating for more with the introduction of Suriya. While RAKTA CHARITRA-2 isn’t quite THE GODFATHER 2, it’s still nonetheless a worthy second part instalment to RGV’s bloody revenge saga.

Katrina Kaif interview

You keep getting these ‘hottest’, ‘sexiest’ awards year after year – and now do hot item numbers too – while asserting that you’re the frumpiest among your sisters. Explain the contradiction.
On screen, obviously, I do work to look glamorous, that is my job and looking that way is my presentation for my job. But I don’t go to bed like that.

Off screen and in my everyday life, however, I don’t want to walk around like that. Whoever wants to be my friend or would like to come near me for any reason, I want them to see me. I don’t want them to see a person like that. That’s not me.

Merry Christmas…

Posted in the ugly on December 25, 2010 by Satyam

Anthony is far too obvious a choice as an iconic Hindi film character. He is quite simply the best known Christian in the country’s history! I decided to therefore represent another Christian here, one of my other favorites, and obviously one of the most loved ones in Bombay cinematic history — Jack Braganza from Bobby! This sort of minority representation so common in the 70s is a perfect example of the stereotypical minority but one very affectionately drawn nonetheless. One loved those older stereotypes whereas the more realistic representations that have come about since the 90s in this sense have often seemed no more than ghettoized and far from the humanistic universalism of 70s cinema. Those characters were as integrally a part of the landscape as the majorities in those films. Their status within the nation-state was never questionable. Manmohan Desai remains of course the master practitioner of this ‘ethos’. In any case here’s to the ‘Christian’ of Bombay film tradition…!

My Top 15 Films of 2010

Posted in Refugee on December 24, 2010 by masterpraz

Carrying on from 2009′s top 10

Have yet to see: UDAAN, ROAD TO SANGAM, TOH BAAT PAKKI, ROAD MOVIE, PANKH, LAHORE, THE JAPANESE WIFE, BUMM BUMM BOLE, RED ALERT, ANTARDWAND, WELL DONE ABBA, SHAHRUKH BOLA TU KHUBSOORAT HAI, RAKTA CHARITRA-2, 333 MUMBAI TO INDIA, KAALO, LOVE SEX AUR DOKA (LSD), TEES MAAR KHAN and TOONPUR KA SUPERHERO.

RANN: Dirty politics, scheming politicians, corruption and conspiracies, shady characters and wily liaisons, back-stabbing and murder, media and the mass public…what could’ve been another entry into RGV’s SARKAR series is a terrific stand-alone drama-thriller about the dirty scandals and corruption behind today’s media. Backed by some power-house performances from the Big B, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Sudeep Chatterjee, Paresh Rawal, Rajat Kapur and Mohinish Behl this is no doubt RGV’s most complete film in a while. This heady and edgy cocktail of suspense, high intensity and no-frill emotions is an edge-of-the-seat drama-thriller that’s not to be missed!

Liberalisation’s Children

Posted in the good on December 24, 2010 by munna

Liberalisation’s Children
Economic reforms brought a new set of heroes and heroines. We pick some who were born and bloomed in the Bollywood of liberalised India.
Namrata Joshi

It would be impossible to think of an exceedingly idealistic yet acutely cynical soul like Vijay, the poet of Pyaasa, surviving in the contemporary, consumerist, globalised India. Similarly, a flamboyant yet matter-of-fact and conciliatory Raj of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge could not have captured the imagination of a socialist, post Independence India. Each stage in the life of a nation gives rise to its own stories, fashions unique narratives and invents distinctive heroes and heroines who embody the values and principles of the times. We pick some who were born and bloomed in the Bollywood of liberalised India.

Your Favorite Hindi Musical Numbers (2010)

Posted in Refugee on December 23, 2010 by Saket

So far, I’ve been thinking, the year’s been dismal in terms of films only. Come to think of it, I can’t even pick 10 songs from the year that I’d like to permanently add to my playlist.

My picks (so far):

1) Ibn E Batuta (Ishqiya)

2) Dil To Bachcha Hai Jee (Ishqiya)

3) Hud Hud Dabangg (Dabangg)

4) Tere Mast Mast Do Nain (Dabangg)

5) Dooriyan (Break Ke Baad) — really oddball choice, but I like it!

Update:

6) Beera (Raavan)

Your choices? Any songs you’d recommend?
