2011: Bachchan Legacy Reinvented?

Posted in Refugee on January 29, 2011 by masterpraz

2011 was an interesting year for the Bachchan’s and while not all their films lived up to boxoffice expectations, they had a solid line-up between Father-Son-Bahu.

Amitabh’s PAA success at the tail-end of 2009 didn’t carry over to Ram Gopal Varma’s much publicized RANN which despite being a good film, didn’t find many takers.

Before the release of 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan came up with an unusual marketing gimmick. Since the movie was built around two friends searching for his character Rancho, Aamir would lose himself in different parts of India, and leave fans guessing where he could be. On one such trip, he announced he was off to see his mother. But instead of going to Pune, where she now lives, he went to Banaras, in search of her ancestral house. He didn’t know her maiden name. “All I knew was that the house was in a locality called Telia Nala, and the name of the house was Khwaja Manzil,” he says.

Michael Wood on True Grit

‘Pastoral scene of the gallant South’, Billie Holiday sang, evoking a landscape of lynched bodies. This was the ‘strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees’. Certainly a dark version of pastoral but well within the mode’s capacities. If traditional pastoral often idealises the simple life, it never quite chases the shadows of cruelty and corruption away, and what William Empson called the trick of simplification was always the thing. The mode kept remembering what it was ostensibly getting rid of.

Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were in the capital for the launch of the Stardust magazine cover, which presented them as “India’s No.1 Power Couple”. It was a wonderful night of music, glitz and glamour. While Aishwarya looked stunning in a red anarkali suit, Abhishek stole the show with his wit and humour.

Frank Rich on True Grit and America

A month before John Wayne won the 1969 Best Actor Oscar for “True Grit,” Richard Nixon wrote him a “Dear Duke” fan letter from the Oval Office: “I saw it in the W.H. with my family and for once we agree with the critics — you were great!” Some four decades later, his rave was echoed by another Republican warrior, this time in praise of the “True Grit” remake with Jeff Bridges in the role of the old, fat, hard-drinking, half-blind 19th-century United States marshal Rooster Cogburn. Shortly after New Year’s, Liz Cheney told The Times that her parents saw “True Grit” at the Teton Theater in Jackson, Wyo., and gave it “two thumbs up.”

The Deols Strike Back-YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA (Hindi, 2011)

Posted in Refugee on January 24, 2011 by masterpraz

If there is one star family that was affected by the Multiplex boom it was the Deols. While Dharmendra had tasted success with films like JOHNNY GADDARR and LIFE IN A…METRO, it was Sunny and Bobby who were both suffering. The last time they all had a decent hit was in Anil Sharma’s APNE and that had all three Deol’s coming together for the first time.
