The year has gone on a downward spiral after a good beginning with No One Killed Jessica and Yamla Pagla Deewana and now it could be Tanu Weds Manu that gets the box office ticking again.
The film has hit music which is a big plus. In the North the music is a huge hit, infact number one for the year till date. The film is also carrying good pre-release reports.
Another advantage is none of films playing at the theatres at present is doing well and Tanu Weds Manu has numerous open weeks in front of it.
The World Cup will cut into its business on the days India is playing but if the film is liked it will not make much difference as the clear run will enable it to make up the 25-30% lost on the day India plays. The odds look good for Tanu Weds Manu being the third success of the year as long as the content matches its pre release reports and music.
The film has fetched around 6.75 crore in MG’s (Minimum Guarantee) from all around India except Mumbai, Thane and Maharasthra where it has not been sold.
B.O. update: ‘T.W.M.’ has respectable start in North, reports good
- By Taran Adarsh, February 25, 2011 – 17:37 IST
TANU WEDS MANU opened to a satisfactory response in North India this morning. The morning and noon shows were in 40% to 50% range, although the occupancy was better at several screens too. The response elsewhere ranged from average to below average [20% to 25%]. In any case, the industry was never expecting a thunderous start for the film, even though the promotions have been fantastic.
The film has the merits to grow with each passing day and even the audience feedback as well as reviews are positive, so the business should strengthen towards the evening and night shows and also during the course of the weekend.
Tanu Weds Manu took a decent start in the North with the Delhi NCR being around 50-55%. A few theatres even opened to full houses. Ludhiana and Chandigarh were also decent. The rest of the country ranged 25-40% at multiplexes. Overall the opening can be called average thanks to decent collections in the North.
The film did not have much face value but the music has helped the film to get a half decent start at the box office and now will depend on the public reports.
The film has managed a good release of around 700 theatres mainly due to the fact that single screens had no other film to play as the films since Yamla Pagla Deewana have had very poor runs at single screens.
I have posted this on the TMK thread. Hope no1 minds
I loved the film for it’s sheer simplicity and sweetness. Yes Kangna was poor (this role would have suited bebo to the T) but she redeemed herself a bit in the dance sequences especially in the engagement of Jassi. I knew she would deliver this kind of performance coz in NO PROBLEM her dialogue delivery was poor to be brutally honest.
I have become a fan of Maddy after the film. What a great performance he spoke little but each and every scene he was damn good. His friend pappi (deepak dobriyal) was HILARIOUS. Similar to mukul dev in YPD but here deepak had for more scope and his chemistry with Maddy was great to see. The audience were in splits when pappi came out with his witty lines. I also found Eijaz Khan as Jassi very good in his role.
Now me and my friends were talking about how the film would end DON’T READ FURTHER COZ I REVEAL BIT OF THE STORY. (maybe raja – jimmy shergill) will post the name of maddy and kangna instead of his on the marriage cards or the way it was going at the end he would shoot maddy but the ending was well executed and Jimmy left a big impression and the way the situation was interwoven like ‘mai janta ta doctor sahab ke hamara purana rishta hai’ etc. The director did well there IMO.
Also, not once did the film feel like it was dragging. It was quick to the point and the intermission comes at a pretty good time in narration to the events unfolding in the film.
The music was a great plus. I only liked sadi galli and yun hi prior to watching the film but mannu bhaiya (sunidhi smashes it again) and the funny choreography was fun to see/hear. However, rangrez was perfect when it came on and I could feel for maddy. I don’t know about others but I had a lump in my throat lol. Great stuff
To end I would again like to say that it’s a very sweet and happy feel film but a stronger actress in this kind of role like bebo or even anushka would have made it a far more enjoyable affair. I’m a kangna fan by the way.
Would have given it 4 but unfortunately due to the poor casting of kangna in this role 3.5 is sufficient IMO.
It a folly not to release movies during the world cup this time round, the schedule is well spaced out with so much cricket being payed all year round, I feel a little bit of cricket fatigue has also set in. Any big movie releasing while the world cup is on will also have an advantage of an extended run.
I’ve personally always felt the whole WC angle to be overrated. Sure with big matches you do see a reduction in some cross-section of the audience but this is never the difference between a hit and a flop. Biwi No 1 years ago is the best example of this though of course satellite TV and so on is a much much bigger factor today. Earlier Game was supposed to release during the WC, in the third week or Mar or something. Then they delayed it. It’s now coming on April 1 where it avoids all of the WC except for the final. Now this is a bit tricky because if India makes it to the final that Sat would be pretty tough and the film would be impacted even before getting started! The funny thing is that everyone considers the WC a distraction for cinema which it might be to some extent but otherwise the most insane schedules are followed in terms of spacing out releases and so on!
“Biwi No 1 years ago is the best example of this though of course satellite TV and so on is a much much bigger factor today.”—–incidentally, biwi no1 is probably one of the worst movie I have ever seen and to compound it, It was a so-called hit.
With all due respect—How can ANYONE with ANY sort of taste love that movie.
Karisma was highly irritating there as usual and salman no better. Thoughts of that movie gives me the shivers!
i m very happy for Kangana if this does well (and looks like it will)…..here is one girl who certainly is talented – i wud rate her more than the likes of PC / Kareena / Kait / Deepika…..also, it is good to see her getting different roles…..not that I didn’t like her repeated avataars of those “crazy” woman
Tanu Weds Manu had a solid first day with early estimates suggesting around 4 crore nett business thanks to good collections in the North. Both Delhi/UP and East Punjab were very good.
The film should pick up well in other circuits on Saturday and even pick up is not huge the film seems a certain success on the strength of North India business.
Business on Sunday will be hit by the World Cup match between India and England but still an 11-12 crore weekend looks on the cards which would be a very good result for the film.
Tanu Weds Manu first day has come in lower than the early estimates. Still a fairly good first day at 3.50 crore nett approx. The territorial breakdown as follows.
Have not seen tanu manu but get a good vibe from the promos. Somehow, wqnt this film to work.
For all her poor english diction and lack of dancing skills, still feel that kangana is a dynmaite performer who has the capability of enhancing a role, if used properly.
And madhavan deserves more than the 2-bit “scratch aamirs back” roles in RDB and 3I—Eevn in the few promos, with a very restricted role, he shines thru…..U cannot hide talent beyond a point—But he needs to lose weight bigtime!
Tanu Weds Manu had a 20-25% jump on Saturday. All circuits had a jump in collections on Saturday. The film grossed 4.10 crore nett approx on Saturday.
The two day collections of the film is around 7.50 crore nett. The film should do around 11-11.50 crore nett weekend business depending on how the match affects the collections. Below are some territory figures for Saturday (Friday numbers in brackets).
I have not seen Tanu Weds Manu, but happy to see that it is doing well..Band Baja Baraat also did well..Producers take note of this and go for more mid budget movies rather than those big budget super star movies which might bring a good initial but crash afterwards due to poor quality..
Tanu Weds Manu had a decent Monday as it collected around 1.75 crore nett to take its ten day total to 13 crore nett. The Monday collections were around 45% lower than Friday which is pretty good.
The film should now collect around 17 crore nett over the week which is healthy total. The film held up well in Delhi/UP and East Punjab while most other circuits dropped around 50%.
Delhi/UP collected 55 lakhs on Monday and East Punjab was 25 lakhs. The Friday collections were 94 lakhs and 45 lakhs respectively.
Business Talk With Taran Adarsh
Attracting ample baaraatis
March 2, 2011 – 12:09 IST
Three obsessions. Cricket. Bollywood. Marriage. Not in that order, though… Let me explain. Indians adore cricket. Love movies and worship movie stars. And spend all their savings on marriages. The other day, a prominent film-maker told me that TANU WEDS MANU was sure to be a success because it got the formula right. The promotion/marketing was perfect, the music had caught on and the subject material [the journey from strangers to dulha-dulhan] had all the trappings to appeal to the traditional Indian audience.
In December last year, Yash Raj’s BAND BAAJA BAARAAT [one of the best films of 2010, in my opinion] emerged a success story for various reasons. Of course, the contribution by its lead cast [Ranveer, Anushka] as also the musical score [Salim-Sulaiman] cannot be ignored, but more than anything else, the solid content did all the talking when the film hit the screens. BAND BAAJA BAARAAT had a slow start at the ticket window, but the tremendous word of mouth lured the audiences in hordes, despite major opposition in that particular week as well as during the subsequent weeks.
Now TANU WEDS MANU seems to be chartering a similar path. The morning and noon shows on Friday ranged from modest/decent [North India] to below average, but by evening, the trends were evident: The business was moving Northwards. The positive word of mouth was slowly and gradually translating into box-office numbers and the film posted a healthy Rs. 3.26 cr on Day 1. The question was, would it sustain on Day 2 [Saturday]? Or trip and fall [most films slide downwards on Saturday]? Or gross better figures?
TANU WEDS MANU grossed a remarkable Rs. 4.33 cr on Saturday, with North India [Delhi-U.P. and Punjab] contributing the best figures. In fact, a lot many people were skeptical of its performance in North [despite the Punjabi flavor in the film] since Madhavan is no crowd puller in these circuits, but the show-wise increase proved the naysayers wrong. In fact, the Delhi-U.P. distributor [Ginni Arts], who acquired the film two days prior to its release, must be jumping with joy over their right decision.
The film fell on Sunday evening due to the crucial cricket match between India and England. Yet, despite a strong opponent, TANU WEDS MANU fetched Rs. 3.66 cr on Day 3 [better than Friday figures], taking the 3-day total to approx. Rs. 11.25 cr nett, which is very good for a mid-bud film that comes at a time when the World Cup fever has caught on.
Now let’s discuss the economics of TANU WEDS MANU. The producers sold the film to Viacom18 for 11 cr and the company incurred an additional cost of Rs. 6.5 cr on P & A, taking the total cost to Rs. 17.5 cr. Thanks to its popular music and attractive promos, Viacom18 sold the film to various territory distributors, collecting Rs. 7.25 cr in the process. Plus, the company sold the Satellite Rights for Rs. 7.5 cr, besides selling its Music Rights + Home Video for Rs. 1 cr. Which means, Viacom18 had already recovered approx. Rs. 15.75 cr before the release of the film. Viacom18 is distributing the film in Mumbai city-suburbs, Thane and Maharashtra and also in the Overseas territory. At the rate the film is faring, recovering the balance amount [Rs. 1.75 cr] from these circuits would be a cakewalk for the company. In fact, one expects a 20%-25% profit on the invested amount in the first cycle of exploitation itself.
TANU WEDS MANU enjoys a virtual monopoly in the coming days. With no major release till 1 April, the film is expected to enjoy ample shows at plexes and the undivided attention of the movie-going audience. Let’s hope the cricket matches don’t spoil the party!
CBO February 18 to 20

Brand Gautham Vasudev Menon works big time at the Chennai box office. His latest, Nadunisi Naaygal, without any known actors and no music, has taken a good opening.
The film has netted an amazing Rs 48.5 lakhs from 11 Chennai screens, and is the clear number one this week.
Prakash Raj’s Payanam, after a good first week, is holding on in the multiplexes and is at number two.
In third position is Mysskin’s Yuddham Sei, good only in upmarket multiplexes.
At number four is the Pongal smash hit Siruthai and in fifth position is Kaavalan.
Chennai Box Office – February 25 to 27
Chennai Box Office – February 25 to 27 | Wednesday, 02 March , 2011, 11:23
It was one of the worst weekends at the Chennai box office, as collections went southward.
On Sunday, as India clashed with England in a thrilling match that resulted in a tie, collections in the city multiplexes were down by 10 to 20 per cent. However, the single screens’ occupancy was around 40 to 50 per cent!
A leading multiplex spokesperson said: “It was not only cricket, but the lack of good content that has made people shy away from new releases. Payanam has emerged as the family favourite over Nadunisi Naaygal and Yuddham Sei, due to good word of mouth.”
Prakash Raj has pulled off the impossible. In its third week, his Radha Mohan-directed Payanam – thanks to a publicity boost and being a “clean film for family audiences” – has emerged as the new number one at CBO.
The new release of the week, Seedan, is at number two, while Gautham Menon’s Nadunisi Naaygal – due to negative factors surrounding it – took a beating after a very good first week, and is in the third position.
In fourth place is Yuddham Sei, which is holding on well, and in fifth place is Madhavan’s Tanu Weds Manu.
Tanu Weds Manu was rock steady on Tuesday with similar collections to Monday. Some circuits were up slightly while others were down slightly.
The collections on Tuesday were around 1.75 crore nett which takes the five days total to 14.75 crore which means the film should around 17.50 crore nett for the week.
Tuesday was helped by the fact it is Shivatri on Wednesday which is a major holiday in parts of the country and evening shows recorded very good collections where there was holiday on Wednesday.
Tanu Weds Manu showed a jump in collections on Wednesday due to Shivratri as it collected around 2.20 crore nett. The collections are around 20% higher than Tuesday.
The total for six days is around 17 crore nett and another 1.50 crore nett can be expected on Thursday for a first week total of 18.50 crore nett.
The Delhi/UP and East Punjab circuits are performing very well and the film is a hit in both circuits. East Punjab will give a share of 1.30 crore approx in week one. The film was sold for 1.05 crore in East Punjab.
The Delhi/UP circuit will generate a share of nearly 3 crore in week one and the film was sold for 2 crore in the circuit.
I wonder what people see in Kangana.. Okay, so she is a fine fit for roles like Gangster, Fashion and Woh Lamhe but her performance appears far from convincing if the TWM promos are anything to go by.. Its just not the question of her dialogue delivery.. she simply appears quite forced in the way she acts here..

CBO February 18 to 20
Wednesday, 23 February , 2011, 17:25
