Santosh Sivan, who has been described as the “real hero of Raavan” due to his stunning cinematography, has moved on and started work on a new film as director. It’ll be a bilingual and a period drama in Malayalam and Tamil with a working title — Urumi (a flexible sword) — and will star Prithviraj and the hot and happening Genelia.

Says Santosh, in an exclusive interview, “Yes I’m making a film titled Urumi with Prithvi and Genelia. The rest of the cast is yet to be finalised. Urumi is the 8-ft long flexible sword that has been used in Kalari fights for a long time. Sankar Ramakrishnan, who had directed the promising short film Island Express in the Kerala Cafe anthology, is writing the script. The film, a bilingual, is set in the 15th century and will be made for the international audiences.”

Santosh’s last directorial ventures Beyond the Rains (2007) and Tahaan (2008) have been critically acclaimed and
were also marketing successes. “The filming of my next flick will commence in August in Kerala. I have directed and photographed all my films,” says the ace cameraman-turned-director.

The grapevine is abuzz that Urumi is about a group of men who wanted to assassinate Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who set foot in Kappad in Calicut in 1498. However, the director is tight-lipped about his plot. On his casting coup of bringing Prithviraj and Genelia together, Santosh says, “I’m looking forward to working with Prithviraj again; he is very passionate about cinema and is a very talented and earnest actor. This will be my third film with him. I’d first directed him in Ananthabhadram (2005). Then, we met for Raavanan in which I was the cinematographer. Genelia exudes innocence and seemed right for the role and has great potential.”

The cinematographer has been getting accolades from all over the world for his brilliant cinematography in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and Raavanan. The critics who have been harsh on the film however say his camera and the locations are the only silver linings in the film and that he is the “real hero of Raavan”! Quiz him about it, and he states, “I think the visual appeal is always the vision of the director. All my films with Mani have varied visual styles. He’s always experimenting. Though everyone is a critic today, I feel they have been harsh on the film.”

is it right to downgrade the nation’s biggest legend….WHO HAS ENTERTAINED THIS COUNTRY FOR THE PAST 40 YEARS OR SO in an article by BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA??

  3. Sivan is all over the place as a director but I’ll still take him over most filmmakers these days. Wish it didn’t have Prithvi but this should be good…

    • the subject is very interesting, if they have it right. Prithvi continues to be a spirit dampener!

      • Yeah, the problem Sivan has is the same problem most Malayali filmmakers are faced with and that’s the options OUTSIDE of Prithvi for young actors. Slim, grim pickings…

  5. Prabhu Deva and Chandan joins Urumi
    By Moviebuzz | Sunday, 25 July , 2010, 12:22

Santosh Sivan has added two new actors to his Urumi team- Prabhu Deva and Bollywood actor Chandan Roy Sanyal of Kaminey fame.

Prabhu Deva will play one of the four friends who try to kill Vasco De Gama, along with Prithviraj. It is Prabhu Deva who would act as the brain to kill the ruler.

The tag line of Urumi says- “The Boy who wanted to kill Vasco da Gama”. There are going to be a couple of songs tuned by Deepak Dev and choreographed and picturised on Prabhu Deva, Prithviraj and Genelia.

Chandan Roy Sanyal in an interview to a Mumbai newspaper has said: “Yes I am very excited about the film. I play an evil prince and am against my cousin, who is dating a princess (Genelia D’souza); I keep trying to win her over.”

The cousin is going to be played by Amol Gupte, who was seen along with Chandan in Kaminey.

    • That Prabhu Deva is in this film is possibly the best news so far. I loved his work with Santosh Sivan in the short film “Prarambha” – if only he were the lead and not Prihvi!

  6. Vidya to do an item number?

The actress will be seen dancing to a sensuous song in Santosh Sivan’s period film Urumi

Agreed, Vidya Balan’s coy, vulnerable saari-clad image has won many hearts, but this story should add just the dash of tadkaa to it that was lacking all this while. The actress is all set to do her first so-called item number in Santosh Sivan’s next Urumi.

Vidya was never against the idea. Two years ago, Vidya Balan had reportedly mentioned, “I am not against doing an item number but only if I like the song.” It seems Vidya has developed a taste for the music in Santosh’s next.

Set in the 15th century, Urumi is a period film that revolves around the killer of Vasco Da Gama. While the lead actress will play a Portuguese Princess, Vidya will only make a guest appearance in the film; that too in an item song.

But the song has a very different flavour this time. To complement it, Vidya will perform a traditional version of the Mohiniattam dance form. A source reveals, “It won’t be a raunchy number but definitely a very sensuous one.”

Vidya was apparently the director’s first choice for this song, as he was quite impressed by her sensuous “Indian look” in Ishqiya.

And Sivan is known for his ability to make his characters look even more sensuous than they seem with costumes and make-up on; that’s where his cinematography does the needful. Prime example was Kareena’s look in Asoka. And now it’s Vidya’s turn.

While Vidya remained unavailable for comment, Sivan said, “Talks are on with Vidya. I can’t comment anything now.”

  7. Tabu image. She’s apparently doing a song in the movie

Sorry Rooney no Genilia yet. But I read she’s starting her first day today. :)

  8. The top two posters with Genelia look magical. But Prithvi is just lame-looking.

  9. Kassam, u have all the thanx in the world, and if u are watching this movie, tell me when it releases ,etc.. she looks epic and magical (taking word from gf)… spell binding!

ps- i Like genelia a lot. thnx again

  10. for a moment i thought actor was b version of that bhojpuri actor… ravi kissen!

  11. Prithvi looks like a crazy person.

  12. Incidentally an “Urumi” is the weapon I believe Abhishek/Vikram use in Raavan/Raavanan to sever the brother-in-law’s hand…

  13. These pics have an unfortunate Asoka feel to them- hope this is really not in the mould of that turkey.

  14. Santosh Sivan’s mega project ‘Urumi’, marking Prithviraj’s debut as a producer, is in the process of becoming a landmark film in Malayalam.

    • Yup, it actually looks pretty good. Do think Genelia looks quite miscast though- Vidya Balan on the other hand is smouldering. Actually looking forward to this one now.

  15. iffrononfire Says:

    looks wonderful

well so called regional cinema is making a global movie well bollywood keeps churning out mediocrity

  16. @iffrononfire
yes you are right…it is always the case isn’t it, earlier as well?

  17. I don’t understand why so many people are against Prithvi. I think even in Raavanan, he played his role really well. In the hands of a good director, he can really be well used. If people dont support a promising young star, then how can we expect anything but slim grim pickings.. People should get ready to move beyond M & M.!!

  18. I am not much impressed with trailer..It starts off well, but then it is the usual slow motion gimmick..Now a days this slow motion stuff is being overdone and gives an artificial look..

  19. some great Genelia stills here!

  20. pinaki de Says:

i feel santosh should go back to his Malli roots…still will watch this without fail although i may not know the language…i have a huge admiration for him, more than so called blockbuster directors that bollywood seem to churn out every friday…

  21. Genelia is really looking great here-It is great the way southern filmmakers bring out the Indian-ness in the heroines – something which Bollywoood currently lacks totally

  22. Genelia, Vidya Balan and Tabu in a desi avatar, doing serious action? Sign me up! Vidya Balan looks like somebody who is very particular about doing good roles these days, and I’m glad that Tabu is still getting project’s like this, and big international ones like Ang Lee’s new film. Genelia is one of the few new actresses who has onscreen presence and doesn’t look like she’s modeling even when she’s acting.

And I love the very Indian feel to this. I am so tired of the so-called ‘western styling’ in recent movies where all of these actresses wear pleather hotpants and fishnet leggings. That’s not style, that’s sleaze. This looks like a welcome break from the tidal wave of wannabe Hollywood action thrillers. Now apparently Salman Khan has signed a superhero film with YRF. (And Akshay Kumar is coming soon, in 3D!)

Anyway, the trailer looks interesting, are the male actors big in South Indian cinema? Will this have a nationwide release like Robot?

  23. yesterday night watched urumi..nice film it was a film to be enjoyed at the cinemas..really gr8 cinematography and background music..loved it..just regretting not bein able to catch it in theatres

  24. and genelia looks really good and good acting..she was the best part of the film…hope she playing childish roles in hindi films and does a normal film..she is really wasting her talent…

  25. and genelia looks really good and good acting..she was the best part of the film…hope she stops playing childish roles in hindi films and does a normal film..she is really wasting her talent…

  26. iffrononfire Says:

genelia acting ……..thats a big surprise

though liked her in bomarillu in bubbly and childish avtar infact a major part of jane tu ya jaane na was directly inspired from bomarillu to and so was her performance

  27. ya but after jaane tu all the roles were same..life partner, dance pe chance, orange, bomarillu was the first time i loved it..jaane tu was new for hindi audience but after that every time genelia is there in every film she had such roles itself.i liked her a lot in boys…that was natural..in urumi she plays a very strong character and her eyes speak a lot…and she looks very beautiful and gives a very good performance…actually all the performances was as required nothing fantastic…(except for jagathy gives a brilliant performance)
