it always is. Have you seen hindi version of Wuthering Heights starring Dilip Kumar and Waheeda Rehman? I think the title is “dil diya dard liya”…imagine Dilip Kumar playing heathcliff!
No. Really? Wuthering Heights is so British and it is blasphemy to make the movie in a non british atmosphere and actors. Same with Rebecca which was made with Waheeda and Biswajeet. Only saving grace, the songs that movie. Even the Hitchcock version did not do justice to the novel by Daphne Du Maurier.
Not sure why people rave so much about Dilip Kumar. Maybe I haven’t observed him in ALL of his work. I think he has VERY weak eyes (poor thing)….and the over-acting started later in his career. But I hope I am not killed now, on this blog for saying this
Thought that this franchise was already past its expiry date—
but think POC-on stranger tide just about “survives”—and by a margin…..
The half-inebriated Depp carries the film on his charm and bumbling charisma like before …
although some of the quips like the characteristic crispness…
liked the “mermaid” angle and the “woman from the past/con woman” bit…
Overall, i (reluctantly) have to give it a thums up!!
Many people and critics are surprised as to how/why such a tired franchise is making such a money.
Dont blame Disney for choosing the easy way out and “banking” on this sort of critic-proof subject and star persona again.
People are complaining about too many sequels, blaming the lack of original material. But they are still turning up to see unimaginative ( financially motivated) sequels. The clear truth is that, in fact, the majority audience love sequels and feel “safe”. So many people are afraid of change,
Having said that, inspite of the critical onslaught, i enjoyed myself ( had to be literally dragged to see it though)
There is talk of Geoffrey Rush and McShanes “superb act”, but IMO, the reality is that this one is all Depp and Sparrow!!
The movie is a bit longer than it should be…
The music score is rousing and actually a bit addictive.
In a nutshell, i reluctantly liked his one more than i expected (or i wanted to)
Penelope Cruze was actually not bad (which is sorta creditable to come out with Sparrow around)…
Something lslightly endearing about the “mermaid” angle and the movie itself.
Watch out for theme music during the closing titles—-
bole toh understatement of the year…what beauty…even my eyes were totally popped. and so beautiful and so vile/vicious creatures. The whole jumping out the water scenes were shot using synchronized olympic swimmers!! Lovely tails. LOVED the whole mermaid angle.
Sweets…first off…LOVED your “review”. Chakas review. Not intellectual bs. Mugambo khush hua. ehhhhhaaaaahahaha.
This is not a “ghisa pita” type of formula (IMO) and not a “sequel” in the sense of continuity of story. It is more like adventures of jack sparrow or Indiana Jones in various adventure situation. So while there is “expected” stuff in there, still the story is “new”. I LOVED the first one and the last one is very true to the first one. In bet. the other two hand things going with “creatures” with weird heads and all…bit too whacky…over the board for my taste. I like my pirate, easy, simple and clear.
Then Geoferry Rush is SIMPLY DELIGHT….very-very Amitabh Bachchan-ish (and I felt like that FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME in this episode 4)….especially when he is tied to the tree with Johnny Depp…..kya baat hai. He has the same type of dialogue delivery like bigb….and flair for drama…and shakespearean delivery of dialogues (for ME). J. Depp, Rush, Cruz are consummate artistes. While cruz didn’t have much to do other than heaving her bosoms (especially they knew Alex will be coming to see the movie…lolz), she still has ability to deliver what her character needs to deliver. Thank god Rush didn’t have the monkey this time (yikes). Just visually the movie is paisa wasul. The the first one, they had limited budget but great plot and cast. Since it became hit, they have more money and they spend it on elaborate sets, airplane/aerial shooting of scenes, more special effects ….etc.
“Sweets…first off…LOVED your “review”. Chakas review. Not intellectual bs. Mugambo khush hua.”—Thanks Dimps.
Good to hear that my “review” passed your test—(which can be difficult)lol
Agree with your views overall—quite like what i felt.
“While cruz didn’t have much to do other than heaving her bosoms (especially they knew Alex will be coming to see the movie…lolz), “—hahaha—so u picked that up as well –No cumments….lol
LOLz. I hate reviews and reviewers and seldom read reviews beforehand (before going to movies); it ruins things for me; I am my own reviewers. Somewhere Roney wants to do a review and is reading other people’s reviews and I was rolling my eyes…WTH….why would you read others reviews BEFORE writing your own…Aighah…
If movies don’t have proper plot or anything substantial in it, at least it should be PAISA WASUL. I think Manmohan Desai understood this very well and delivered the entertainment to the masses.
And tera PoC review mere upar say nahi gaya. I like the way “aam janta” talk about movies….oppps I used a word Satyam abhors. Now he is gonna come after me…let me RUN.
i didnt like the pirates to be frank, and felt quite boring.
ofcourse it aint bad, but it aint that great, and to be frank i guess 3d was spoiling for my viewing, i dont find comfortable in 3d. (btw my place 3d, is diff from original 3d, i hope u understand)
my problems:
1. lack of continuity in flow.
2. set pieces, and first half was too boring.
3. i felt more movies can be made in this series, but they require tight narration. imo
but i guess my main problem was i couldnt go thru 3D barrier yaar! i felt like eyes were paining, i was tired after work.
My eyes didn’t pain due to 3-D but I felt that 3D didn’t add any particular value to the movie. I think they are making all movies into 3D these days because 3D televisions have come and they have to market those…so…maybe. You have to see these kinds of movies with small kids (Harry Potter)…they love all the actioney parts and antics of the pirate and the adventure of going to find fountain of youth..yada…yada. I agree though. The movie might be mediocre however if you are into depp and like pirates then it might be a treat. Cruz’s pregnancy hindered the movie…they barely showed her below neck, couldn’t put her in corset, couldn’t make her do actions…so they should have hired someone else..but then that would be sexist…etc.
Thanx for the info Dimps- did not know that Druze was pregnant …
Hmmmm— now this explains something( pointed out above)….
Agree bout the “sexist” bit…
Rooney– this is NEITHER a pathbreaking NOR a cutting edge film…
This is just innocent paisa vasool fun as Dimps rightly pointed out….
When a character”/persona becomes as effective like dell/ sparrow,
“lack of flow”or “inconsistencies” becum incidental..
Ps– also note that the makers did not fall into the trap of a sequel being “bigger and more Sfx laden” without reason- although the 3d was more due to commercial / marketing reasons than requirements of script or subject…
Ps2-agree with Dimps that the mermaids were “brutally beautiful”-lol
