actually rahul was pretty successful as a captain: he’s one of only 3 Indian captains to win a series in Eng (Wadekar in 1971; Kapil in 1986; Rahul in 2007), and led India to (at the time) only their second Caribbean victory (admittedly a weak team, but note that even as late as 2007, only England, Australia and South Africa had won in the Caribbean since the 1970s). I was never really sure why he stepped down. Perhaps he did it because of the toll captaincy was taking on his batting form, but he never really recovered it even after leaving the captaincy. Hopefully he is now, in light of his recent performanced, and after Sachin and VVS, also on the road to re-invention in his cricketing dotage.
winning the series in west indies and england where the ultimate high of dravid’s captaincy but i guess the loss in first round of worldcup in 2007 haunted him ….also in 3rd test of the same series rahul was a tad defensive as captain which led to draw instead of indian victory ( we could have won that series 2-0)
anil kumble handled young dhoni pretty well( and groomed him for close to 1 year for test captaincy ) and even in the controvesial australian tour his maturity was there which helped india alot
and the one big blunder they did was the appointmentment of duncan flether ( which everyone criticised but agai bcci was admant on it like drs…. he was always a spent force)
in india there are people like gavaskar, amarnath or saurav who could have been the far better choice

today’s loss just exposed dhoni and why saurav ganguly was the best indian captain ever ( time and again i said that)
dhoni has a very cool head agree but his handling of man management and grooming of young talent left lot to be desired
he is just carrying the fruits of the hardwork done by his three previous captain( saurav , rahul and anil though other two where not that sucessful)
infact in last 3 tough tours of england we hadn’t lost and things is all set to change this time
