  1. B.O. update: ‘Force’ has forceful start, leads by a big margin
    - By Taran Adarsh, September 30, 2011 – 16:19 IST

Five releases on a single day, but the trends were very evident in the morning shows itself. FORCE garnered a forceful start at single screens and a decent/average start at plexes across the country. The opening shows at single screens were in 80% to 90% range [at places, even 100%], while plexes were around 30% to 40%. The word of mouth is extremely positive and the business is expected to show an upward trend on Friday evening/night and also on Saturday and Sunday. The film is leading by a huge margin. The first day numbers are expected to be John Abraham’s biggest so far [solo lead].

SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER has been appreciated immensely, but the numbers are missing. In fact, the film will have to rely on a strong word of mouth to show an improvement in business … HUM TUM SHABANA, which has had one of the best promotional campaigns, started on a lukewarm note. The opening shows were in 10% to 15% range … TERE MERE PHERE and CHARGESHEET had a gloomy start. In fact, the opening figures of both the films are dismal.

  2. Force Takes Good Opening Other Releases Dull

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Force has taken a good 60% plus start at many places while other places were average. All in all its a good to decent start and it will be interesting to see what number the first day gives at it is a big release. Some centres were even 80% plus on the first show.

The other releases Hum Tum Aur Shabana and Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster had a poor 10-15% opening while collections of Chargesheet and Tere Mere Phere were very low at 5-10%.

Force has just wiped out the competition and leads the others by a huge distance and is the only one which really stands a chance to make an impact at the boxoffice.

  3. Mausam Goes Down on The Weekdays

    Friday 30th September 2011 08.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Mausam went downhill on the weekdays and kept on dropping heavily each day. The film grossed 28 crore nett after a 20.75 crore nett weekend.

The fall was universal as all circuits crashed, even the North which saw the ebst weekend collections.

The weekday trending suggests that even a 35 crore nett lifetime total is looking a tough task for Mausam as it has a lost of screen space in week two.

Basically it is the third disappointment from all the major releases since July. The other two being Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap and Aarakshan

    • LOL, they never fail to invoke Bachchan! The other day they had a list of films that did best in week 3 this year. Aarakshan was there but they said that was only so because it had a full UP release that week! Irrespective of the budget and gross the Bachchan film is always a ‘disappointment’!

  4. John Abraham’s Force Opens To Good Houses
September 30th, 2011 by Komal Nahta

The John Abraham starrer Force opened to good houses in North India. At places like Ghaziabad and Noida, the opening show’s collections were 95 – 100%. At other places, the first show’s collections ranged from 65 – 85%.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster opened fairly well in North India but it’s initial in the rest of the country was dull.

Hum Tum Shabana opened to poor houses. A couple of places even reported cancellation of shows. Tere Mere Phere also opened to dismal houses. The initial of Dev Anand’s Chargesheet was no different.

Update: At Bioscope multiplex in Jodhpur, the 10 am show of Force saw an occupancy of 43%, the 12.30 pm show an occupancy of 33% and the 3.30 pm show an occupancy of 46.88% (210 persons saw the film in that show). On the other hand, shows of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster at the same multiplex saw markedly lower attendance. The occupancy percentage for the 9.45 am show of SBAG was 2.46% and for the 12.45 pm show was 11.48%.

Maya Mandir cinema in Ajmer saw a collection of Rs. 15,010 in the noon show of Force. The collection for the 1 pm show of the John Abraham starrer was Rs. 16,110 at Glitz, Ajmer. The 3.45 pm show at Glitz collected Rs. 29,730.

  5. Taran has the most specific commentary here clearly illustrating a single screen/multiplex divide. Nahata only refers to North India. BOI is the most vague and presents a random number here and there.

This is the sort of opening that can be presented positively or negatively if the ‘trade’ so chooses. Now I’m all for another masala movie doing well even if the John casting here in Surya’s part is a little appalling. But better openings have been stated more negatively by some of these very same sources!

  6. Even then I don’t see Force doing more than 45-50 cr at best. John does not have the fan following required for these kind of movies.

  7. Very sad for Mausam but deserving. No one should be allowed self indulgence in the name of making a classic. Pankaj Kapoor is lucky to get so much to fool around.

  8. ** Pankaj Kapoor is lucky to get so much money to fool around.

  9. Will be checking Sahib, Biwi aur Gangster out this weekend. Can’t really bear to watch John Abraham reprise Surya’s role in Kaaka Kaaka so will give that a miss for sure. Although the album has one extra song by Jayaraj that wasn’t in the Tamil original, which is pretty good…

  10. salimjakhra Says:

Chargesheet looks awesome. Sadly I’m out if town this weekend so won’t be able to catch it :-o

  11. – been damn busy
Isn’t chargesheet not dev anand’s serial ode to Alzheimer’s and delusional psychosis.
Salimjakhra– u should be spanked for expeessing such taste lol

Btw is john Abraham s force doing well.
    Am happy for John
Sort of like him –relatively sensible and endearing and yes, self made–hav a weakness for self-made ones.

Want him to have a big 1(maybe his only chance)…
And y is everyone suddenly going against steroid habitus after celebrating all the dutts and salmans ” natural” physique

  12. storyteller Says:

I like John and think this sort of flick is precisely what he ought to have been doing all these years – the romantic actioner, to simplify things a bit. I’ve liked the promos so definitely going to check ‘Force’ out.

  13. Yes btw –also happy for John for managing to get rid of the (twin)load of bipasha…
He must be feeling much “lighter”…lol

Have not found John as “wooden” as people make it out to be–obviously he is not a Naseer or even Ajay

  14. I like John too…he seems really chilled out.

    • Don’t think the pressure of how he’ll perform keeps him up at night!

Having said that among Bollywood’s beefsteaks I don’t mind him as much as long as he recognizes his essence and keeps himself restricted to the likes of Dhoom and Dostana.

  15. sukanya Varma on Force:

    http://www.rediff.com/movies/review/review-force-is-boring/20110930.htm

the original film would never have received this sort of review. Or at least it would have got strong reviews overall. This remake always looked a bit more non-serious even in the trailers.

The one small mercy here is that at least they left ondra renda alone. I think they’ve replaced it here with a different song. Or at least they didn’t reveal it in the previews. But it is in any case one of my very favorite contemporary Tamil songs:

  16. I think, earlier on John had one thing going for him which was a combination of his physique and a certain air of vulnerability in his facial features. As he has gotten beefier, his facial features have coarsened to a point that he has lost the boyish good looks he had before. And, he remains as wooden as ever.

  17. Just finished watching Aarakhshan……superb movie , not boring at all ( i was expecting it to be but was pleasantly surprised)…AB simply rocked, the dialogs were top class and kept the interest alive thruoyt the movie. the only downside IMO was the music..if the music was more upbeat this movie would have done wonders at the BO…..
Jha does not take sides and puts up argument of both the sides…or may be he takes 55% for and 45% against resevation…..overall a very satisfying watch..

  18. Liked what I sw yesterday, a film called Saheb Biwi aur Gangster.

The best things about it were the racy screenplay, characterization and performance of Randeep Hooda. The film could’ve been better without the irritating songs in an otherwise fluid narrative.. Direction is simplistic, and Tigmanshu is certainly an underrated name in the industry. But the film somehow doesnt stay with you once its over.. Tigmanshu is talented no doubt but somehow his scenes dont reflect the mood of the situations, a thing which filmmakers like Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap so effortlessly achieve.

Overall movie was good. only if stayed much longer with me after I left the theatre. But thumbs up for Hooda.

  19. alex adams Says:

In SBAG promos—jimmy sheirgill looks good.
Has done well in whatever little chances he has got till now
Hope he gets some good look

    Hate the “hoodlum” Hooda
Not a “talent” forget a good one
Saw bits of an Ultracrap wannabe “satya” called “D”
    Horrible

Mahie gill is talented–was really good in dev d

  20. Force Has Fair First Day

    Saturday 1st October 2011 9.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Force had a fair first day of around 4.75 crore nett as per early estimates. The film did well in parts of the country but was let down by business in the multiplexes of North India. It performed well in the single screens of UP but the multiplexes of Delhi and Punjab were low.

The performance was good in places like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bihar and Orissa. The films fate is dependent on whether it can show good growth on Saturday and Sunday. Normal weekend growth can take it to 17-18 crore nett weekend which would be a decent total.

Force is the biggest John Abraham solo lead opening and the collections are just a bit lower than his biggest multistarrer openers New York and Dostana.

    • If this number is fair what would poor be?! On the last paragraph one shouldn’t even dignify it with a response. As I keep saying ad nauseam any opening short of a total disaster is ok with any star who doesn’t have the Bachchan last name.

Even with Mausam they didn’t update the entire week after Mon. Finally when there was nothing they could grasp onto they finally admitted the truth.

      • storyteller Says:

Just to clarify this sentence – ‘As I keep saying ad nauseam any opening short of a total disaster is ok with any star who doesn’t have the Bachchan last name’ – do you mean okay with Boxoffice india or okay in general?

      • Annihilator Says:

I agree. Force had a mediocre opening on Friday. And yet we are supposed to believe that Force had a fair or forceful start (opening) at the box office when it was actually very low. If Abhishek had been the lead actor in Mausam or Force then BOI, Taran Adarsh, Komal Nahata, etc. would all be reporting that those films had abysmal openings and will be disasters. Its so obvious how very biased the trade are against any film that stars Abhishek or his father.

        • storyteller Says:

Or rather doesn’t it suggest that the expectation from a John Abraham solo starrer is very low? I read ‘very fair’ here as referring to the ‘hero’ in question, rather than a general standard to which everyone is held. 4 crore is rather fair for John, but not fair for Abhishek for instance, who is touted as much bigger star with greater box office potential.

  21. Force First Day Territorial Breakdown

    Mumbai – 1.81 crore

    Delhi/UP – 1.03 crore

    East Punjab – 37 lakhs

    West Bengal – 18 lakhs

    Bihar – 15 lakhs

    CP Berar – 28 lakhs

    CI – 17 lakhs

  22. After Force Only Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster Collects

    Saturday 13th September 2011 9.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Force lead at the box office this week with around 4.75 crore nett and there were four other releases in Chargesheet, Hum Tum Aur Shabana, Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster and Tere Mere Phere and out of these four only Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster managed to collect something worthwhile at the box office.

Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster collected around 1-1.10 crore nett on its first day and with decent reports the film should grow over the weekend. The film out performed in North India with nearly 50% of its all India collection coming from Delhi/UP and East Punjab.

The other films were dull with Hum Tum Aur Shabana in the 40-50 lakhs range while Tere Mere Phere was around the 20-25 lakhs mark. Chargesheet had very low collections.

  23. Mausam Nets Rs. 29 Crore In Week 1 At Box-Office
October 1st, 2011 by Komal Nahta

Mausam suffered on account of its unduly slow pace and its undue length. After a weekend all-India total net collection of around Rs. 20.5 to 21 crore, collections nosedived so that the first week ended at barely Rs. 28 to 29 crore. With a number of new releases this week and several more scheduled for next week, the debut directorial venture of Pankaj Kapur can’t hope to salvage itself. It is bound to entail losses to the parties concerned.

Speedy Singhs did not score at the ticket windows in the first week – neither the original English version nor its dubbed Hindi version. Except for some areas of East Punjab and Delhi, where its title helped get some patronage for the film, it could do precious little at the box-office.

Johnny English Reborn (dubbed) fared poorly at the turnstiles in its first week. Johnny English Reborn (English) also fared poorly in the first week.

Rivaaz fared as miserably in 2nd week as on its first day. Jaana Pehchana has tanked at the solo cinema it opened two weeks back – Liberty, Bombay.

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is reaping the benefit of weak releases. In its third week, it managed to add Rs. 4 crore to its all-India kitty thereby taking its 3-week total to Rs. 58-59 crore!

Bodyguard is now on its way out after an extraordinary quick inning. It will touch the Rs. 150 crore mark in India.

    • MBKD after keeping pace in the initial week or so has fallen way behind ZNMD. Hardly surprising. My thoughts on the film once again:

[Plus I also need something to recover from the experience of MBKD (even if it was home viewing!). The best thing I can say about this film is that it’s more engaging than Break ke baad. Otherwise it’s one miserably uninspiring film where as Rangan rightly pointed out even true romance is not risked in an ostensibly romantic story! One could read this film as a weird spoof of Pardes! There are useless film allusions designed for nothing more than instant laughter. The current Yashraj formula (or part of it) of lots of Delhi + lots of festivity continues. Katrina meanwhile does an appalling acting job (even by her illustrious standards) that is one long screech of a performance. The two male leads do much better. Ali Zafar seemed surprisingly at ease and had some good chemistry with Imran. Meanwhile the latter even with some of the goofy oddness that is becoming rather stale by this point nonetheless appeared very restrained in front of Kaif and one had to be thankful for this small mercy. With Katrina it’s not just about the shrieking and lack of voice modulation, even in terms of her expressiveness one could see her trying to play the hyper character but she displayed utter lack of control. I am constantly amazed by her success story. with this audience though you could do a Deewar remake with Imran Khan and they’d be cheering.]

      • Re: “The two male leads do much better. Ali Zafar seemed surprisingly at ease and had some good chemistry with Imran.”

I haven’t seen the film, but this isn’t especially surprising: it’s a sign of the dominion of the juvenile (in both Hollywood and Bollywood) that so many of the comedies, light films, etc. seem to have far better male-male bonding than male-female: first, because the directors and writers aren’t adult enough to even conceive of “real” female characters (as opposed to the Babe fantasies that doubtless accompanied years of masturbation, and that have long been a staple of video games, comic books, etc.); and second, because even the puerile can manage “dost-yaar” bonding — male/female, especially in a comedic context, requires greater subtlety. [I was reminded of this when I was watching Jhoom Barabar Jhoom last evening, with a friend who hadn't previously seen it (it was my first time since my theater viewings back in 2007): although the film was a bit flatter than I'd remembered, for the most part it still held up pretty well -- Abhishek's comedy with the female leads was very welcome; in general Lara Dutta owned Preity Zinta in this film.]

  25. Force Drops On Saturday

    Sunday 2nd October 2011 12.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Force had a drop in collections on Saturday and has grossed 9.25-9.50 crore nett in two days. The key for the film is Sunday as mass films show big jumps on Sunday so Force will need that big jump and then remain steady on Monday. Below are the Saturday figures with Friday numbers in brackets. All figures in lakhs.

    Mumbai – 168 (181)

    Delhi/UP – 91 (103)

    East Punjab – 36 (37)

    West Bengal – 21 (18)

    Bihar – 13 (15)

    CP Berar – 22 (28)

    CI – 15 (17)

    Rajasthan – 23 (28)

    Nizam – 23 (17)

    Mysore – 21 (20)

    Others – 17 (20)

    TOTAL – 450 (484)

    • Any word on how the film fared on Sunday? Doesn’t seem to have done all that well, although perhaps I was expecting too much from a John Abraham solo.

  26. taran_adarsh taran adarsh

#Force Fri 5 cr, Sat 4.75 cr, total Rs 9.75 cr nett. #SBAG Fri 1 cr, Sat 1.25 cr, total Rs 2.25 cr nett.

  27. Force Has Below The Mark Weekend

    Monday 3rd October 2011 9.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Force is below par over its first weekend as it has grossed around 15 crore nett. The film had a just about decent first day of 4.75 crore nett but was not able to grow over the weekend due to lack of appreciation in many parts of the country.

The film dropped on Saturday when Friday was not huge which is not a good sign for Monday collections. The collections on Sunday were again decent at places.

The fate of Force is dependent on Monday which has to be very steady as its only a six day week with biggie Rascals coming on Friday but going by the drop at key stations on Saturday it looks unlikely that Monday will hold up well.

If Monday does somehow hold up well then Force can go on to be an average runner.

  28. Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster Weekend Business

    Tuesday 3rd October 2011 15.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Sahin Biwi Aur Gangster remained on the lower side with around 3.50-3.75 crore nett over its first weekend. The film was okay on day one but failed to really grow over Saturday and Sunday. The film has done better in Norrth India with east Punjab collecting 54 lakhs nett and Delhi/UP adding 1 crore nett over the weekend.

The other releases were very dull. Tere Mere Phere had a little jump in collections as it collected around 80-90 lakhs nett while Hum Tum Shabana turned out to be a huge disaster with just 1.10-1.20 crore nett in its first weekend.

Chargesheet remained very dull with very low collections all over India.

  29. Force Nets Rs. 16 Cr Over Weekend
October 3rd, 2011 by Komal Nahta

Force made Rs. 16 to Rs. 16.25 crore (approx. all-India net collections) at the box-office in its first weekend. John Abraham and Genelia D’souza’s action-romance movie made Rs. 5 crore on its opening day on September 30. While collections dipped a bit to Rs. 4.75 crore on Saturday, they increased slightly to Rs. 6.25-6.50 crore on Sunday.

Force had a fairly good opening. The collections are good for a John Abraham starrer, but not great if you consider the cost (Rs. 30-32 crore for Fox Star Studios).

    • DMD had similar collections with lesser cost .. but commentary suggested poor and below the mark opening weekend.

      • and meanwhile BOI still claim that with a stable Mon Force could be ‘average’ while Nahata says it’s a decent weekend except when you take costs into account. I could really go film by film over the years. It’s always completely biased commentary when it’s a Bachchan involved and this includes straight superhits, it includes all kinds of budgets, even films where the budgets were so low that it wasn’t possible to make a loss.

  30. bollywoodfan beleives komal nahta satyam. ;)

  31. ab abhishek bachchan flop pe flop de raha hai to BOI zabardasti taref kyun kare.. If someone gives onne disaster another on a consistent basis, anyone could be pissed off forget BOI or Komal

    • It so happens that when he was giving hits they still said the very same stuff! And it so happens that they deviate from this rule only when Dostana comes around. A mystery I am still trying to solve! It also happens that the flops of others get very kind treatment from them. Of course this isn’t obvious if one likes what they say!

But hey Nahata and Taran are the last honest Indian citizens around. It’s wrong of me to doubt them.

      • i believe you must check out the budgets of bachchan films befre questioning taran n komal’s logic

      • anyways if they’re unkind on bachchan films they must have a reason for it .. mybe not on good terms because of a reason unknown to you or me.. but that doesnt make boi the worst site around as you claim.. i think their judgements are still fine otherwise.. it just so happens that you’re a bachchan fanatic which makes boi untrustworthy for you.. cmon admit it

        • actually I find them terrible on most counts! On being a bachchan fanatic though I am not one I could think of far less honorable professions even were I one. And this includes many who are excessive fans of some contemporary stars! Bachchan fanaticism ought to be a requirement for good taste in Hindi cinema! I am sorry for bringing up the word ‘taste’ as it puts many fans of some others at a considerable disadvantage.

  32. Haaaaaaa .. seems like BOI read my comment about DMD and come up with comparison.

  33. Force Has Heavy Fall On Monday

    Tuesday 4th October 2011 10.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Force fell heavily on Monday as it grossed 1.50 crore nett. It was on the cars as Saturday business dropped in practically every circuit. The film has now collected nearly 16.50 crore nett and the week is looking to close at around 19.50 crore nett. All circuits dropped even the ones where action fares do better.

The only circuit that held up a bit was West Bengal as it is a week long holiday there but even in West Bengal collections should be much more steadier considering holiday.

The trending of the film is worse than last weeks Mausam which had very bad trending and it is likely to finish around the 21.50 crore nett mark with a 10.75 crore distributor share which is very poor.

  34. Loved Saheb Biwi aur Gangster… cant take the movie out of my head.. don know y it is not as well received as force( after watching the tamil Orgininal starring Surya- Which i have watched over 6 times, I cannot Force myself to watch Jhonny Boy) Guys leave force behind. either watch Saheb Biwi or the original Tamil Version of Force- Kakka Kakka)

    • Force is being left behind the audience so no need to worry :P

I am going to catch SBG in next few days. Heard nothing but praise for the film and Mahie Gill…. enough reasons for me to watch it lol

  35. just back from watching force in a 50 to 60 pc crowd plex…one of the worst movies ever..the direcor has really tampered the story that you dont feel anything for its characters…john abraham prooves he is the worst acor in bollywood today…imran khan is miles behind him

  36. Force seems to be a goner. SBAG seems to have taken a slow start but hopefully will sustain.

  37. Business Talk With Taran Adarsh
    Brawn Power!

    October 5, 2011 – 07:51 IST

Film business is very speculative. One week it slides down. The subsequent week it heads Northwards. And when you have five films vying for audience attention, the business is bound to be scattered. Of all the five films that opened last Friday, it was FORCE that generated some heat at the ticket window. The business of the remaining films, barring the critically acclaimed SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER to an extent, remained on the lower side.

Come to think of it, John Abraham — I am talking of solo starrers here — was never known to attract audience in hordes on the crucial Friday. His last two films, JHOOTHA HI SAHI and AASHAYEIN, were not only poor openers, but proved damp squibs at the box-office. Going by this logic/theory, FORCE, relying strictly on John’s brawn power, was never expected to have a forceful start at the ticket window. Besides, with so many films releasing on that day, the screen count and shows were curtailed to a major extent, thus limiting its business prospects. But box-office is most unpredictable…

FORCE seems to have been singled out by the movie-going audience. And with Dashehra on Thursday, the film has ample opportunity to post respectable numbers in Week 1. The producer/Studio hasn’t sold the Satellite Rights yet, but looking at the decent response at the ticket window, besides a positive word of mouth, the rights should fetch a significant amount.

SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER, on the other hand, met with tremendous critical acclaim and the business showed a gradual increase, though the big jump was missing. Of course, the film caters to a niche audience and was never expected to fetch an electrifying start. It was meant to grow with a strong word of mouth, which it did. The film has fared well in certain pockets mainly [Delhi-U.P. and Punjab circuits]. The silver lining is its reasonable budget, so recovering the costs shouldn’t be a problem.

The remaining three films, HUM TUM SHABANA, TERE MERE PHERE and CHARGESHEET, failed to takeoff and the business showed no signs of escalation during the weekend.

  38. Rascals Set To Open Well

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Rascals is looking for a good opening at the box office as it releases on Thursday which is a holiday for Dusshera. The holiday factor will help the film on day one. The film may have got into top three on day one but it’s complete release is on Friday while multiplexes will have less shows on Thursday. A complete full release and holiday factor may have got into the top three opening days of the year but still it should get around 15 crore nett over the first two days . The top five openers till date are as follows.

    1. Bodyguard – 20.62 crore

    2. Ready – 13.33 crore

    3. Singham – 8.77 crore

    4. Yamla Pagla Deewana – 7.63 crore

    5. Double Dhamaal – 7.58 crore
