now now…..this is gonna huge as a genuine suspense thriller (assuming that it will be going by aamir’s choice) is coming out after a long long time….which was the last successful/genuine suspense thriller bollywood saw? Gupt? what else?
btw, has anyone seen denzel washington’s “Deja Vu”? I was wondering whether talaash has something to do with that? the end of Deja Vu sparked a million debates – as no one clearly understood what was it? anyone?
Have seen the film. It’s ok, nothing special. Bit of a sci-fi time travel theme to it. Denzel basically goes back into time some days before a disastrous event takes place to prevent the disaster itself. Doubt Talaash is based on this. The Secret in their Eyes rumor is more plausible based on the loose synopsis I’ve read.
denzel goes back into time and dies and immediately after that denzel from that time appears! so, i concluded that the one which went from future into the past died and at the same time the one which already was there in the past – survived, oblivious of the whole future-past act…
This is called the “grandfather paradox” (or actually a variation thereof) which is a standard theme in time travel stories. It is a challenge for the writers of these stores to avoid falling into this trap.
Oh, sorry, Idea, I thought you were answering the earlier query on the meaning of the ending, and didn’t realize that you were the one asking the question.
Well, based on what you said here (I haven’t seen the film), they have the future Denzel die before he can warn the past Denzel, thereby ensuring that the timeline and its events don’t change. To avoid a meeting between the different selves of the same person from different times is something that is to be avoided at all costs, according to the conventions of these kinds of stories. This particular version that you and Satyam have outlined here is adhering to the “fate is immutable” school of thought, in that whatever disaster happened in the present, cannot be undone by tinkering with the past.
A slightly more scientifically correct version of time travel is presented in Back to the Future. In that film (the first one), the mere fact that the son goes back into the past and interacts with his grandparents and parents, as well as the scientist who invents the time machine, has put him on an alternate timeline. This is shown very subtly by the fact that, when he comes back to his present time, the personalities of his parents and their friend (Biff?) are quite different from the way they were before he traveled to the past. In this case the changes were an improvement, but they could also have been a degradation. This type of story draws on the “many worlds” or multiverse model of the universe, where each decision point (which occurs at every instant of time) sets up a different timeline, but all timelines are simultaneously in existence, and each has a different version of the “observer” (time traveler) in it. This idea that you can’t come back to your time and have it be exactly the way you left it is a consequence of the uncertainty theory.
But, if we’re going to be strictly scientifically accurate, this kind of time travel is not possible at all, not on a human scale, anyway.
The Secret in their Eyes is a great thriller, but wedded to Argentinian politics/milieu of the 70s. A lot of it can be indeed borrowed into a parallel Indian context. Wonder how they will do it for Talaash.
I would be disappointed if it’s based on this though because the twist at the end is so unique it would be strange to replicate it. And yes you’re right on the political contexts here. The ending once again plays into this very well. Nonetheless for anyone who hasn’t seen the original a remake done the right way would have an extraordinary impact and I think would especially feed well into Aamir’s ‘different’ image.
I doubt, trailer is not that good and genre is not massive. its just decent trailer appealed to some segment only. I am expecting 90 Crore if movie is good.
music and bg scroe – ram sampath

what else does one need here more? aamir-khan – the marketing genius – and he is at it again!
I’m so happy to have Aamir Khan back in a mainstream film as main lead after so long!! Though I wasn’t impressed with the poster much. I loved the teaser! Looks different, unique, fresh – at least compared to all regular stuff dished out in Hindi films in previous years.
The BGM is good (not mindblowing but good) and it’s good to see Rani, Kareena, Aamir – such talents in the same film.
I was kind of skeptical about it earlier, but can say now it’s my most awaited film of the year. Here’s hoping it lives up to the expectations!
Average promo, not that great.Main problem here is Amir’s height which is not suitable for the role of police inspector.Anyway Agneepath has taken a historic start at boxoffice and i am surprised that no thread has been opened for this so far.
Akhtar-Kagti are establishing themselves as a directorial duo to be reckoned with. I am surprised that Kareena was OK with being billed after Rani though.
*Must* Amir sport hat ferocious scowl?!!!!
Epecially when passing through the crowd with that “I’m angry, and I’m looking for someone…see my uniform? That’s what I’m supposed to do!! “(reminded me of his Gajhani expressions)
That’s called hamming IMO.
I wonder if he’s going to ham his way through the film like he did in Gajhani.
All this talk of Aamir being not “tall” enough to portray a cop is just silly & laughable…just to refresh everyone’s memory, this kind of foolish scepticism was expressed a decade back when a certain film called “Sarfarosh” was about to come out…post release, mouths were firmly shut when Aamir turned in one of his most honest, sincere & straight from the heart performances !
aamir was not tall – so he could not have pulled off sarfarosh
he was not a macho – so how could he pull-off ghajini?
he was above 40 – so how could he play a collegian in 3i?
aamir was a romantic hero – how could he play a farmer in lagaan?
///////
\\\\\\\
and so on….it will go on with each of his films….
Guys please tel me you’ve seen THE PLEDGE???? Jack Nicholson stars in a Sean Penn film..
TALAASH looks like an exact copy and so does the twist….I could be wrong BUT if it is…and some commercial tweaks havent been made then this will be a very NICHE film.
This looks like a frame to frame copy of THE PLEDGE with Jack Nicholson?? I dont doubt Amair Khan will make a great film, but I dunno bout commercial success here, specially if the end twist is the same……
yeah i’ve the pledge and actually liked the movie except i hated the ending. jack was awesome in it. but i disagree that talaash’s promo is a ‘frame to frame’ copy. i don’t see any comparisons at all. talaash seems inspired from other thrillers but not from the pledge.
to be fair it is hard to present a suspense thriller in a ‘new’ way. so they all look the same. its how much this film will be executed and usually aamir khan films are HIGHLY executed. so i have confidence that this movie will be good. like i said box office seems iffy because of the genre. but aamir has defied the box office norm before.
I believe if Bodyguard was a good film it would’v trended well which would’v got close or could have broke the 3i BO total…..however on the flip side you had a ZNMD with a mixed opening which trended gr8.
If Aamir can get a gr8 opening….the film’s content will do the rest
If the excitement is the same as it was for Ghajni…i think this will beat all opening records and if its a damn good movie it’l trend well too which means it has a chance of getting close to 3i

I’ve heard the rumor that it’s based on the Argentinian Secret in their eyes (won the Oscar).

i suspect a psychological thriller here.. albeit could be wrong.
Talking of which I saw the recent Bradley Cooper / De Niro film lately – Limitless. Was good fun and engrossing enough.
January 26, 2012 at 7:34 AM
Limitless is a fantastic film

January 26, 2012 at 1:56 AM
By any chance Talaash is based on Dicaprio’s Shutter Island
January 26, 2012 at 1:57 AM
two heroines, police inspector & title taalaash matches the shutter island story.

Farhan Akhtar wrote the dialogues…interesting…

Wow…blown away with the teaser ! My most awaited Hindi film of 2012 along with Gangs of Wasseypur & Shanghai.
Seems Anurag Kashyap is credited with additional dialogues. All the more reason to look forward !!

Well .. just clock back your mind and think SRK instead of Aamir in this teaser .. you may find it Awesome.
January 26, 2012 at 7:13 AM
@Jeevan, I was the one who criticised Ra.one’s first mini promo when even Satyam liked that.Just check your facts before raising finger at someone.
January 26, 2012 at 5:43 AM
a good promo – doesnt reveal much about the film, but can see why people can be excited about it.

i guess rani is sr. than kareena ……thats what they follow when big stars are in the same film i guess
January 26, 2012 at 8:11 AM
besides rani/kareena are mature enough not to fight for billing in this sureshot blockbuster kinda movie

This is looking really good, and a very ‘cerebral’ thriller. Has a lot of Philip K. Dick and Stanley Kubrick overtones.
And Rani Mukerji is such a sight to behold. Good to have her back
January 26, 2012 at 7:40 AM
wow!
This looks a intelligent crime thriller…
Even the trailer is loaded with suspense….
But I dnt think this will surpass 3i total…..
