  1. The colour scheme of 1968 seems to be blue pastel.
    Suits these lovely graceful ladies.

  2. I cant get over the rather bushy eyebrows and long lashes. Still looks beautiful, tho. Never been a big Meena Kumari fan. I hope Salim, the psychiatrist doesnt mind.

    • I too have never been her fan..

      • salimjakhra Says:

Shush both of you! This is not the thread to be expressing such unspeakable thoughts :=)

Salim ‘the psychiatrist’ just found out he passed his final final exams, so is now fully qualified MRCPsych :-)

        Thanks Satyam – stunning image.

        • Heartiest congrats Salim…! many of us here are also certified..

        • thakursingh Says:

          Congratulations Sally!

          • salimjakhra Says:

          • alex adams Says:

            Are u Sally? Shadu?
            hmm
The ill=effects of a psychi job are already manifest!!
Stay away from lithium and other stuff
            embrace psychedelic stuff..lol

ps–was just watching bits of Stardust max awards follwing repeated tweets from Nargis f
Nargis F also danced to munni badnaam
dont know what to say ;-)

          • thakursingh Says:

Life is good thanks Sally! =) Ah didn’t you know – Hindi is the next universal language after English in the world. hahaha. Good luck with your job apps. I remember we used to chat when you were studying… so I’m very proud of everything that you’ve achieved and the distance that you have come.

    • “…rather bushy eyebrows…”
I was going to say something on those caterpillar brows but refrained myself (I don’t like Saif’s bhajia nose either :-(
I guess one should not make remarks on other’s physical appearance(s)…politically incorrect…
Somehow I see her movies and get the “victim” mode she is in…maybe the times were different then.

      • Alex adams Says:

From the ‘bushy’ bit-was reminded of something elsewhere
Well, will refrain from elaborating :-)

        • “From the ‘bushy’ bit-was reminded of something elsewhere”

bush people in afria…I am sure Lexy… ;-)

          A dirty joke:

Santa,” Where do women have curly hair”
          Banta,” In africa, where else”

          lolz

      • Hmmm, those are not bushy eyebrows (only one actress can take credit for that – Karishma Kapoor of the nineties; guess she didn’t have access to a mirror or was completely hypnotized into believing that those hairy outgrowths made her a beauty)
        Who was her stylist then?

I guess till around the 50′s this was the norm; thickening the eyebrows flat using the jet black pencil. Its not only MK..Waheeda R, Madhubala as well…

Come 60′s 70′s, the eyebrow shapes jumped to the other end of the spectrum. The ultra thin brow lines of Rekha during that time, Rakhee, Hema M, S Tagore, Simi G all popping into my head rite now. Mala S and Asha P too I think…

With the eighties came along the shapely slightly thicker penciled brows – Jayaprada, Sridevi, Hema Malini changed as compared to seventies…

Nineties was the time of bushy archs – Madhuri D, Juhi C to a lesser extent, Dimple (from pencil thin to controlled bushy later) and the queen of it all KK.

The naughts and later brought some semblance of natural shapely brows to many of the actresses. – KK , Ms Dixit, JC all their brows underwent sensible changes. The newer lot of this decade came in well groomed already (except having not much talent to speak of)

        —–
Just put down what I felt so about this although my references are just few pics that I’ve come across randomly. Never have subscribed to any filmy magazines etc so anyone welcome to elaborate and correct this if I’ve gone off track…

        • Wow that seems a thesis on ‘bushy’ lashes
          Nice arthi

          • Thesis..:)…

          • actually I was thinking of lolo too..while writing my comment. What would women do without the eyebrow threading and beautificians…no? While on that topic, I desperately want to thread dilip kumar’s eyebrows. And Bachchan senior’s too!!! So hairy no…

        • I think you are just about right with your onservations, or at least that’s my observation too.

I think the older actresses needed dark eyebrows for the sake of prominence otherwise thin eyebrows would have got lost in black and white, plus the lighting was presumably not the sophisticated kind as today.

          • One thing has always struck me though – the use of long lashes. Each time and I mean each time I come across a pic / scene of the hero and heroine in each others arms, the heroine leaning her head against his chest, her eyes lowered and he lovingly gazing at her, have always felt hes looking (thats most visible to him) at those giant eyelashes from above and poof – the romance just vanishes…

          • Haha arthi-wot a comment :-)
            Lol@ giant lashes
            Vvv

          • lol…Arthi…you remind me of Vatikala…ahh..I miss her so!

          • Not sure why there is no reply button for Di’s comment:
“..actually I was thinking of lolo too..while writing my comment. What would women do without the eyebrow threading and beautificians…no? While on that topic, I desperately want to thread dilip kumar’s eyebrows. And Bachchan senior’s too!!! So hairy no…”..

Actually , if you look at tribal women, they don’t need any beauticians and the rest , still in this regard they are flawless if u know what I mean…(Will not go into details here… But times have changes for whatever reasons (we cant get into that here., again) we do do do need salons…:)

Prefer men’s brows to be natural – bushy , hairy , thicker whatever. Don’t even remember what AB’s and DK’s brows are like so its know its all ok on their resp faces. Even something like Karun Chandok’s.
Touch them and it gets artificial like that dullard robot Imran Khan’s made up brows.
Or Or better still, those absolutely freakish feminine brows of a few Korean / Japanese actors of today. Some of those youngsters actually have it more shaped than their female co-star’s. But for the kind of movies that they make, I can forgive and definitely ignore these ‘little’ goofs.

Oohhhkkk…lest I get labeled as a brow freak or pervert, this is the EoD from my side!

  3. thakursingh Says:

Meena Kumari is the epitome of emotional dard but this picture suggests a Meena Kumari full of hope and daydream flights of fancy. Nice picture… I think it was the year that Phool Aur Pathar with Dharmendra came out, if I’m not mistaken.

    • salimjakhra Says:

Nah, Phool Aur Patthar was a few years earlier (the photo says 1968) – unless the pic is actually older than that (which may be the case as she does look younger than she was looking in the late 60′s). It’s a beautiful photo…

  4. Alex adams Says:

Never been a fan of meena kumari
    Oh well,
    Except her apparent philandering ways
Heard that dharmendra was her ‘toy boy’ initially and that she was a
    Nymphomaniac of sorts?
Can someone shed light-think salim or even oldgold knows bout it ‘first hand’
What was the media coverage of this @ that time, oldgold ?

Salim-all the best with the psychedelic stuff (oops meant psychotropic ..) :-)

    • “Except her apparent philandering ways”
      Tu sudhrega nahi!!!
Did she have any kids? If so what are they doing? Any of them in BW?
There was a scene (in Pakeezah?) where Rajkumar writes poem on her feet…in urdu(ised hindi)…I haven’t come across such beauty in present day movies.
      Lexy…You didn’t participate in my poll :-(

  5. Alex adams Says:

    Which pool

  6. Alex adams Says:

don’t have any pool wear rite now… Is it needed?

    • “Is it needed?”
Naah…you can come naggu pungu….clothing optional for little kids :-)

      • Alex adams Says:

        R u sure ?
It should be ‘Equal’ for everyone
        No discrimination
        No hang ups
So lets make it a ‘nudist pool party’

        Oops will stop there

  7. Alex adams Says:

And ‘elderlies’ like oldgold may get offended
    Wot a paradox..
