oh please! she is gorgeous and can deliver with good material and director. but what is her body of work so far? a little early for tabu comparisons since she hasn’t had much of chance to realize whatever potential she may have. and the comparison itself is weird since tabu didn’t get much of a chance to realize her potential and had a very scattered sort of career.
an jo – lol @ arjun’s wood.
Maachis, Virasat,Kala Paani, Astitva, Chandni Bar, Namesake, Cheeni Kum, maqbool. Tabu has been as enigmatic as aamir to me. They live in their own worlds. Tabu could have done a million commercial films but she goes into hibernation mode from time to time. Hawa has to be one of the most bizarre films she has done and she was candid in an interview that time that guddu dhanoa shot the film in flat 25 days and she was paid a huge sum for the role she did (she is being raped by a ghost in most part of the film )
But I actually never said that she was outstanding. All I said was she was the best amongst her peers and she has done quite a range of films. There are few important Telugu films also which she did
i am not negating tabu’s talent or choices, but that for whatever reasons, that didn’t exactly give her a huge eclectic body of work. also, i like versatile actors better; ajay devgan is good but only in certain type of roles, same goes for tabu.
and singh hasn’t come anywhere close to being labelled new age tabu. at this time, she seems to be trying hard to be the kareena of the small independent films
I must agree with antya. I do like Tabu but leaving aside opportunities I don’t see her as some brilliant talent. Even when effective in very many parts I’ve never found her outstanding or anything.
she has eclectic filmography but not roles. she is playing the same part in 80% of them.
and as satyam said, she is effective but hardly outstanding. it’s never more clear than in the namesake. she is good here, but irfan is on a different plane.
I thought that Tabu was brilliant in Maqbool, Namesake and Hu Tu Tu. Even in a film like Cheeni Kum, she brought a dignity and maturity to her role that I can’t see any other current commerical Hindi actress matching.
I mean, if Tabu isn’t that good an actress, Vidya in Kahaani wasn’t anything special- then who *is* an example of an excellent actress within the contemporary Indian context? This is a genuine question BTW, no sarcasm intended.
Antya- Funny, because all of the top international critics reviewing the film seemed to rate Tabu’s performance on par with Irrfan’s (and for this particular film, the excuse that foreign critics viewed the film with condescension simply isn’t true). You are ofcourse perfectly entitled to your opinion that Irrfan’s was the better performance, but I’m just stressing this detail to point out that finding Tabu to be a brilliant actress is hardly as unreasonable as you make it out to be in your intial comment to Raju.
i didn’t call raju unreasonable, and that comment was more about the chitrangda comparison. it’s perfectly fine to find her great, i just don’t. as i said, i have liked her in many films (maqbool and cheeni kam would be my choices too). she is always competent, sometimes very good, hardly brilliant.
in namesake, tabu is very good at playing an awkward middle-class bengali housewife. irfan on the other hand, IS an awakward middle class bengali husband and father.
satyam calling Tabu not so great or not so special is as genuine as I calling abhi a super actor and talent gone unnoticed Maybe Tabu and Abhi shd do a film together
I don’t know many people who don’t rate tabu as one of the finest actresses bw has produced. And I am not just talking about fans – people like Gulzaar, Shabaana, Naseer……all of them have praised tabu at one point or another.
C’mon Antya. For a moment stop acting like a matured lady and try to think like a 22yr old male. She has the dignity of Waheeda and the spark of Smita Patil. And I would love to take her out for coffee
your desire to take her out for coffee is perfectly valid. but there is no need to accomplish the feat of insulting both waheeda and smita in a single sentence to achieve that. i would have found that comparison insulting even when i was 12, forget 22.
btw even thinking as a 22 year old (even as a 17 year old)–that sometimes i can regress to hahaha—
difficult to find alia bhatt ‘sexy’ or ‘hot’
yeah she is cute sometimes and is endearing somewhat
but cant see her as an object of desire .. .:-)
as for chitrangada—its different
theres something ‘smouldering’ there whatever ones age group
Reminds me of a teacher of mine who (i thought) used to ‘flirt’ with me … and would suddenly behave v strict just when the ‘kid’ started becoming a ‘man’ hahahha
This is just my opinion folks
Have rarely been impressed by the acting skills of tabu even her aunt Shabana
I find them the perfect examples of how people fall for this ‘pretence’.
Look @ the choice of roles
One can see a certain ‘design’ even a premeditated plan of ‘looking like’ the ‘thinking actresses’
I won’t mince any words
I find most of their performances unimpressive even ‘insipid’
Haven’t seen most of vidya balan movies but she can really put in the skill and the whole works
Forget about Balan–I find even someone like rani and Priyanka chopra more worthwhile ‘effective’ actresses (even not taking into account their better all round dancing /glamorous ability)
ok folks—just saw the trailer of inkaar–
few points–
havent seen any of this maker mishras films–have seen promos etc–but this is his BEST fiilm till now(maybe the shiny ahuka-chitrangada film was good)
-bcos he seems to have shed his unnecessary nonsensical pretences here.
t-he topic is pertinent and under/misrepresentated
Loved arjun rampal here–liked his styling and look–besides he is effective in his role (note im not saying he is brillaint)
Have always liked him somewhat inspite of being wooden but here he is showing just enuf acting skill for this setup
chitrangada–is acting well but her look are inconsistent–puffy face @places–but like her ‘poise’ in some scenes
reminds me of some characters i know lol
Seems the botulinum toxin became in short supply in some scenes and ran out in others haha
its not about being ‘gay’ etc–one doesnt have to be one to appreciate certain things
have always preferred good looking leads atleast in mainstream films—its after all a visual media
do try to pay attention to carefree styling in real life too ..
rampal here and in that maoist film with abhay deol looks good-well done arjun…(actings another matter though but lets be honest—are we expecting a DDL in this role!)
Liked the theme soundtrack-and lets not kid ourselves and try to fake it..this mishra guys best film till now -no pretence of ‘meaningful-ness’–cmon give us a break!
This is Arjun rampals best lifetime role (like him here)
Ps-something tells me I partly know this guy
December 14, 2012 at 8:04 AM
Two good looking leads. Arjun Rampal looks absolutely gorgeous!
December 14, 2012 at 1:04 PM
this is a winner. Chitrangada is the new age Tabu.

she was also a part of some commercially successful films like Biwi no. 1, border, hum saath saath hei, chachi 420, fanaa, life of pi…
December 14, 2012 at 2:05 PM
But save Chachi, in all these films her roles were akin to cameos. Haven’t seen Pi
I am with U on Tabu, the best actress of her generation

Antya i really respect your views but i think you are underselling Tabu here. And if her filmography is not eclectic the whose is!
December 14, 2012 at 2:11 PM
I must agree with antya. I do like Tabu but leaving aside opportunities I don’t see her as some brilliant talent. Even when effective in very many parts I’ve never found her outstanding or anything.

Maybe Rampal will finally deliver his full potential here..a wooden actor who is accused of using wood!!
December 14, 2012 at 2:21 PM
I love Chitrangada but I think Mishra could have been adventurous and cast the stunning Alia Bhatt in this.
December 14, 2012 at 2:27 PM
hilarious!

btw i do like alia bhatts eyes
in a couple of years or more–she may ‘flower’ into some1 more attractive & i predict that she will be good then
btw folks–check out this cheesy creepy song–typical kjo style
is somewhat of a guilty pleasure
and alia is cute but ‘sexy hot’ –nope
and in the name of ‘ethnic’–whats kjo made her wear
December 14, 2012 at 2:46 PM
The ‘pretence’ of great acting– tabu & Shabana
