BIG B on Filmfare awards and Media…….. EPIC !!!!!

”Regretted invitation to FilmFare Awards due bed rest and acknowledged their disappointment, but also understood the reason for my absence ..
They had wanted me to host the show this year along with ShahRukh .. I had liked the idea, met their team to discuss the creatives, but found it unsuitable for myself ..”
“So … going down the history of cinema, I would have come to a period when I would have had to mention my own presence of the time. This I found embarrassing for, I would have had to talk about myself ; an act I would not be able to endorse .. so I told them my predicament and opted out. They kept up their persuasion saying they would be able to draft a suitable text for it, but I did not feel comfortable. They then asked me to give the posthumous award for Yash ji to his wife, Pamela. I had been travelling and then subsequently shooting for KBC and could not take it further. Then of course this morning I woke up with the most painful neck and informed them that I would not be able to come ..”
“But yes indeed, Awards and me have not been a compatible proposition; particularly with FilmFare. After an initial period of acknowledging my work, the entire press went against me , because they were informed by ‘sources’ that I that had brought on the idea of the Emergency and a ban on the press .. !! Nothing could have been more ridiculous. But they did not relent and banned me ; no interviews, no mention or pictures, or news of mine were ever printed in any form of the media during that time. So no Deewar, or Sharabi, or Muquaddar ka Sikander, Lawaaris, Natwarlal, Bemisal, and so many many others went blank, because the media had banned me. They banning me was reasonable perhaps from their point of view. Not for me. I took on the challenge to ban them also from my life and have so far not disturbed that stand with certain modifications of course. During that 10-15 year period, they relentlessly negated my presence, deliberately closed information of me by their agencies, and kept me as persona non grata ..! I had my biggest hits and the most interesting films of that time ..”

January 21, 2013 at 2:27 PM
I am happy that he did not let himself to be reduced to SRK and other Bachchas level …….
It would have been akin to SRK in Don-2 , The Baap reduced to hosting award shows !!!
January 22, 2013 at 9:04 PM
Aap me post kar ke dil khush kar diya, great to see! The Filmfare awards (actually virtually all of them) are so pathetic, yet if he had hosted I would be forced to track the video down and check it out — I’m glad to be spared that!
January 23, 2013 at 6:56 AM
Shukriya Q …aapkee freedom waali post ne bhee dil khush kiya tha…
Aside- I am planning to watch the Screen awards for Abhishek..

typo – 1903 should be 1913.
January 21, 2013 at 12:43 AM
I think filmfare tried to emotionally blackmail Bachchan by using Yashji and Pamela. Good that he refused.
They ignored the biggest legend on flimsy grounds and now they are crawling in front of him, almost begging.
Well done, Mr.Bachchan.

“They ignored the biggest legend on flimsy grounds and now they are crawling in front of him, almost begging.”
how did they ignore him? read his post.

OT, I heard ANIL KAPOOR performed quite miserably in KBC!!! It seems the man didn’t know the meaning of his own daughter’s name – sonam!!
It seems there was a question where he was asked – what is the word associated with ‘low temperature’ that is also fashionable..the answer is COOL..and he couldn’t answer that!!!
Man, JHAKAAS really turned JACK ASS!!!
Somebody put up that link here if you find it..I can’t seem to find it on youtube..
January 21, 2013 at 2:52 AM
despite all that – they wud have programmed the epsod in such a way that that bas ASS wud win 25L

Maybe Anil was overawed in BigB presence. It happens. Blanking out during exams, interviews.
January 21, 2013 at 4:27 AM
They can add additional categories.
Biggest blockbuster hero
Best Item song
Best dubbed film
Best Sequel
These awards are as honest as Bigboss award.
January 21, 2013 at 4:37 AM
Compratively Screen awards were better.

Priyanka Chopra and Rani Mukherji are ignored. Priyanka’s role was not easy and her act was better than even the hero’s. She had to look ungainly and awkward and for a glamorous star it is quite an act. Just imagine Katrina in her place.
Rani’s was a short role but a memorable performance. She proved that a capable actress need not be in every frame to make an impression.
Reema Kagti did a commendable job, yet she was completely ignored because she took Aamir Khan as a hero.
January 22, 2013 at 1:30 PM
Priyanka wasn’t bad in Barfi but it was a boring, predictable act. she doesnt have range nor do i suspect she has the potential to understand a character’s nuances and subtelties
January 22, 2013 at 2:06 PM
I agree about pc being ‘boring’ in barfi
Infact it was a ‘tedious’ predictable act of ‘ticking all the boxes’ in a big standard ‘disability act’ –rate that performance much below Ranis black performance!
But overall feel that PC is quite a competent, versatile actress who isn’t really bad in any major criterion!
She fulfills all the criteria for a major successful Bollywood mainstream heroine!
Yet major success (commensurate to her ability) eludes her–I can’t pinpoint it!
Perhaps it’s the absence of DDG looks & appeal..
Coupled with her ‘outsider’ background, she shares more with srk, than those ‘hush hush’ intimate moments (on flights & outdoor/overseas schedules)
January 22, 2013 at 9:10 PM
Re: “Rani’s was a short role but a memorable performance. She proved that a capable actress need not be in every frame to make an impression.”
I completely agree, she was fantastic in Talaash. Also agree that Aamir’s directors get overlooked just because they are his directors. I think the film was superbly directed, easily the best film of 2012 for me…

also one more category: Best ignored actor – that award will go to whom every year?
January 22, 2013 at 4:38 PM
Does “Best Ignored” means the superlative conclusion of “The more ignored, the better” ?
January 21, 2013 at 8:49 AM
The people who managed Filmfare then would be long gone, I would think. It seems that he has good relationship with Jitesh, who appears to be big fan of bigb (reading his twitter on occasion or two). Personally, I am glad though that he kept away from the event.
January 21, 2013 at 9:04 AM
This should open the eyes of all those who put SRK on a pedestal for his record Filmfare awards. One cannot simply ignore Bachchan during his peak phase (76-82), in which he probably would have won for all those 6-7 yrs, and then count the awards of his contemporaries/successors.
January 21, 2013 at 9:55 AM
Though it is the stars who enjoy receiving awards, it is the fans who really celebrate or mourn just for the sake of their idols. And the fans cant forget or forgive so easily.
Those were the years when Filmfare copies were sold in thousands during those award ceremonies. Now only diehard fans buy Filmfare and other magazines whose prices have shot up dramatically.
And paid journalists used to write for the stars and the fans believed that their stars were such good writers!
January 21, 2013 at 11:29 AM
General level of interest in FF awards seems low this year.
Agree with ABs stand.
January 21, 2013 at 2:10 PM
So who ended up handing out Yash Chopra’s award to Pam jee???
hope not SRK !!

Hosting/performing live & ‘fairness’ of awards
The quality/authenticity of awards like ff/others have always been questionable. Hosting awards functions is another matter though and so is performing ‘live’ on stage.
In bollywood, the ones not wanting to attend/perform/host awards are those who appear to be the ones at the ‘receiving end’ of these irregularities in award selecion process. The likes of sunny deol, ajay devgun etc (& the biggest of em all aamir khan).
But hold on—theres something else in common between these besides the ‘angst’ against the system. Try imagining the likes of sunny, ajay devgun performing live or hosting an event ! Even aamir–who may infact be able to do it but after double the time, numerous rehearsals.
At the end of the day, these ‘awards’ are also televised events that generate revenues/TRP. There is a certain spontaneity and presence of mind needed in live events–none of these gentlemen are big shakes in these aspects (unsurprisingly)!
January 21, 2013 at 5:16 PM
You are right to some extent about Sunny but Devegan could probably pull it off !!
January 22, 2013 at 8:02 AM
@AA
Awards should honour talent in cinema. Why must it depend on dancing abilities or spontaneity in conducting the stage?
Why should an actor, who’s unable to dance on stage, be deprived of acknowledgement for good work? Makes no sense!
January 22, 2013 at 9:28 AM
As far as I know, none of the Bwood awards are live telecasts. What we get to see eventually is a doctored/edited version of the original. There is lots of scope for improving gaffes between live and edit. So therefore, anyone can technically host.
January 23, 2013 at 8:31 AM
award functions are more of a social event and entertaining evenings than the actual recognition. Most of them love these soirees and who bothers about the conscience. Go have fun – earn crores (if one is performing) – dine wine and go back home.

Offtopic:
how is the Lord of the Rings film/book series? i know i might be missing out on a lot but can anyone give suggestions whether to go for them ?
January 22, 2013 at 2:41 PM
tony-suggest u forget the books—watch the hobbitt…
I liked it (& havent read tolkeins books)–
infact i dont read books nowadays!
ps-If u do, watch hobbitt in HFR(high frame rate) preferably in d-box (simulated motion sensitive chairs, if available).
return to ‘innocence’ deal….
January 22, 2013 at 2:47 PM
thanks alex.. yes, mised out on the hobbit too? i’d give it a try after ur recco. frankly i cant relate myself to high fantasy works. but a friend’s rebuke made me wonder if im missing out on something epic (he thinks i do not deserve to live without watching the LOTR film series and books)
January 22, 2013 at 9:30 PM
Tony, IMO LOTR are the greatest series of fantasy books to have ever been written anywhere and the same goes for the Jackson films. I am not a fan of Tolkien’s Hobbit but nonetheless it’s an important work
And I am sure you must be aware but the best fantasy novel in Hindi is Devikanandan Khatri’s Chandrakaanta (jispey woh mashur serial aata tha DD pe). Intact purely as a personal preferance, I will take it over LOTR
January 23, 2013 at 1:11 AM
thanks saurabh. can you suggest some other readable fantasy fiction?
January 23, 2013 at 7:12 AM
Lotr was quite spectacular and awe inspiring. Though too long to sit through.
January 23, 2013 at 7:36 AM
I meant The Return of the King.
January 23, 2013 at 9:20 AM
Mahabharat would probably top anything else in fantastical content. If only someone spent the moolah to showcase the true depth and scope of this epic.
January 23, 2013 at 9:53 AM
Completely agree — but I hope it never gets made rather than get made and messed up. It needs to star just about everyone in the industry, be directed by someone who can handle epic scale, and aesthetically, NOT go the way of the mythological TV serial (schmaltzy costumes, heavily Sanskritized Hindi) — that would have a been there and done that vibe. It would be great to see a Krishna who looks, talks like a bhaiyya, but of course is Lord Krishna. And so on for the other characters too.
Frankly, I don’t see anyone in the Hindi industry today who can intellectually handle epic — even most of the “new style” directors are more interested in posing, and “attitude” rather than in substantive engagement (Kashyap, Dipakar Banarjee, Prakash Jha are examples).
January 23, 2013 at 11:37 AM
Agree with you on all counts. IMHO, this can only be done if Hollywood expresses an interest and ropes in a Peter Jackson or Cameron to lead the effort. It cant be made as a ‘Hindu’ mythological, since there really was no Hindu religion in that supposed era. Rather it needs to be made as a pan-world epic, espousing the various philosophical threads within the original story. With all the myriad kingdoms and characters, they could even cast international actors in various roles.
January 23, 2013 at 11:57 AM
“It cant be made as a ‘Hindu’ mythological, since there really was no Hindu religion in that supposed era.”
This statement above really confuses me, What and Who was Krishna? Did they not pray to Narayan, Shankar, etc. Didn’t their names reflect certain God and Goddesses that were/are Hindu?
Would really like to understand this, Can you please elaborate?
January 23, 2013 at 1:43 PM
It is a HINDU epic..Hinduism existed..the snake sacrifice pooja by Janamejaya that was conducted by Brahmins & I don’t think Brahmins did not belong to Hinduism..
http://www.thevedicfoundation.org/bhartiya_history/mahabharat.htm
The ADI PARVA (the beginning of the book itself) was narrated to ‘Rishis’ — and Rishis were/are Brahmins..
January 23, 2013 at 1:55 PM
That’s what I thought, Thanks for clarifying An Jo.
January 23, 2013 at 4:40 PM
The term Hindu itself did not exist before the invasions of Cyrus and Alexander. To the invaders, everyone who lived across the river Indus was a Hindu. A set of beliefs which were totally disconnected from each other were all of a sudden jumbled together into a communal grouping and named ‘Hinduism’. Those beliefs are clearly ‘pagan’ relative to the Judeo (ie Jew-Christian-Islam) religion system. But, such ‘paganism’ existed in the entire world; outside of the Middle-East. A typical pagan belief system consisted of reverence to the forces of nature; much as the so-called Hindu-dharma did through the Vedas. However, these beliefs were totally disjointed, disconnected. The Vedas do not even talk about the titular ‘Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva’ cores.
The world as it exists today is divided between secular/atheist and religious people. I would venture out to say that the only religions that exist are the Judeo trilogy, because they each have a consistent set of thoughts and beliefs, which encompass all their religious texts. What we see as Hinduism today is entirely in response to 2000 yrs of encroachment into the land to the South of the Himalayas. But it is not a single belief system. The ‘Hindu’ texts of today are a hodge-podge of various beliefs; precisely because they were never meant to be parts of a sum. They were never a coherent stream of thought. So, it is wrong to call it a religion itself.
The Mahabharat was written in that disjointed paganistic period. Its teachings/philosophies are relevant to anyone who wants to view it with an open mind, irrespective of whether that person belongs to the Judeo system of ‘religions’. And one more thing, the Mahabharat that you have seen on TV caters entirely to a subset of people who think they are Hindu, but clearly do not even understand that they follow totally different practices within their so-called religion.
PS- Dont skewer me for the above rant now.
January 23, 2013 at 10:05 PM
Since you yourself claim and underscore the fact that you have ranted, I have to agree that it is a rant..
Nobody is claiming that HINDUISM originated first and then the Mahabharatha (I take back my words if that is what they conveyed) is a sub-set of the ‘so-called’ religion..It’s stories and the rituals and the thought-processes thereof are in parallel to what the ‘so-called’ religion of Hinduism today comprises..If chronology is the only basis for such discussion, then there are innumerable things in the religious trilogy that can be questioned and thrown out..
Maybe this could help throw some light on this so-called religion..
“Along with its basic plot and accounts of numerous myths, the Mahabharata reveals the evolution of Hinduism and its relations with other religions during its composition. The period during which the epic took shape was one of transition from Vedic sacrifice to sectarian Hinduism, as well as a time of interaction—sometimes friendly, sometimes hostile—with Buddhism and Jainism.”
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/357806/Mahabharata
“Arjuna fears that acting out his own dharma as warrior will conflict with universal dharma: how can killing family members be good, and not disrupt the social order? Herein lies an unresolved conflict in Hinduism between universal dharma and svadharma (an individual’s duty according to caste and station in life). A warrior must kill to fulfill his duty, whereas a brahmin must avoid harming any living creature. Even demons have their own castes and svadharma, which may run counter to human morality. One person’s dharma may be another’s sin. This doctrine distinguishes Hindu thought from religions such as Judeo-Christianity and Islam which teach universal or absolute moral codes. ”
& no, none of the above links are attributed to the B.R. Chopra version..
And I understand this discussion will go on in circles, so I will vehemently disagree with you and move-on..
January 22, 2013 at 3:01 PM
actually u may not like it that much–so go with ‘low’ expectations.
Im slowly (trying to) move away from tarantino-esque blood /gore into ‘mellower’ stuff or lets say more ‘innocent’ stuff (unlike some here like anya)
January 22, 2013 at 7:37 PM
Why my comment has been deleted? Is it just because truth is bitter?
January 23, 2013 at 5:50 AM
no because troll-like behavior will not be encouraged. It’s one thing to show up once in a blue moon and quite another to show up specifically to say one thing only. It’s not about anti-Bachchan stuff. If you did this with any other star or director or whatever the response would be the same. For the longest time I didn’t do anything. But you’ve kept this up.
January 22, 2013 at 10:07 PM
I hate game shows like KBC . They are exploitive * cant spell..lol* in every sense even though contestants come shining thru. TV for the masses is just at much at fault and we still watch them even though they are offensive. Its like being dumbed down. insults the intelligence. but its painless and we dont even realize it..lol
January 23, 2013 at 7:14 AM
This is hilarious-
