JayShah’s Saturday Box Office Column – Kal Kissne Dekha flatters to deceive…
Note all numbers are from Trade Guide
Reporting Methodology
1) New films most of the time where possible will be benchmarked against other films ‘in the same range’. The gross used for the older films will be one’s I have computed in the past
2) Films currently playing – I will always do some trending analysis. This is always against the ‘week before’
3) To compute subsequent week grosses I will always benchmark against ‘the first week’. Before it was always the preceding week, but Week 1 is always the best base because it gives maximum centres to use
4) Going forward I will show ONE example in FULL and show the results of the remaining scenarios
New Releases
Kal Kissne Dehka
Jackky Bhagnani’s debut film Kal Kissne Dehka arrived with a sizeable budget and pre-release publicity campaign but the opening was woeful across India. Hope of a reprieve was dashed as critics mauled the film for a poor script and the audience reaction did not sustain beyond the weekend. In a nutshell the film has seen a similar fate to Love Story 2050 but the results not as devastating since the budget of Kal Kissne Dekha is not as hefty.
The film made 4.7-5.0Cr in the first week with Mumbai contributing a disappointing 80 lakhs [comparisons were made with Dhoondte Reh Jaoge & 13B]. With no encouraging signs of a turnaround, the film will struggle to make it past 7Cr in total and will add to the growing list of flops and disasters in the year so far.

great to see your pieces on a regular basis once more. Waiting for the release of KI to really have some juice thrown into the proceedings. Nothing like a big release and the week 1 analysis!

Thanks Jay. One question: how much would the likes of a 13B have had to gross for it to not be a flop? I ask because 7.4-8.2 crores would have been a pretty good performance IMO, given the sort of film it was/cast it had…

I saw 13B just the other day. Despite Madhavan’s always welcome presence, it was pretty average overall. The premise was a really strong one for a horror film, but I wished it followed through with some of the interesting themes it raised (mainly of media images as reflection of the modern cosmopolitan family)…the film worked most provocatively as a statement that one should continually live “outside the box”…I could elaborate on this further, and perhaps I will at some point.

Yeah – I heard it was a hit in Tamil. Glad to hear it for Madhavan’s sake.

Maddy has had two successes in Tamil recently (the other one was the remake of Dombivili Fast, Evano Oruvan. I haven’t seen either the original or the remake here). Yavaram Nalum completed 100 days recently:

I think it needed just a bit more. Considering this film opened above 5Cr but hardly added afterwards was the criteria I used. 10Cr and it would have been average performer.

Kal Kisne dekha is a bad movie. Though the concept is decent but lead players’ acting and screenplay make you cringe.
