New Releases

Vaada Raha & Baabarr

Baabarr stood the better chance of last week of posting decent collections after decent review but overall the business is poor in the range of only 0.4-0.5Cr. Vaada Raha did even worse with only 0.2-0.3Cr coming in during its first week run.

Past Releases

Aagey Se Right

With a fair response in the first week, Aagey Se Right failed to capitalize in the second week with a huge fall of around 75% across India. The Shreyas Talpade starrer collected around 0.5-0.6Cr to take its two week tally to 2.9-3.1Cr. Aagey Se Right is a flop.

Kaminey

Kaminey continue its steady run with around 1.2-1.3Cr collected in its fifth week. The Shahid Kapoor & Priyanka Chopra starrer directed by Vishal Bharadwaj has had a steady run where its managed to collect around 42.9-44.7Cr in five weeks despite early release issues in Mumbai and Pune. Considering the genre it’s emerged an above average performer.

Life Partner

Comedy multi-starrer Life Partner matched Kaminey’s collections in week five after a rock steady fifth week. Falling only around 40%, Life Partner has now collected a commendable 21.4-23.5Cr. Approaching around 25Cr, Life Partner is a rock solid above average performer overall which has trended really well suggestive of a good audience response.

Dil Bole Hadippa had a decent start at the box office of around 60% at multiplexes and 35% at single screens. Delhi/NCR saw the best opening with collections of over 70%. Overall with a decent start and a holiday week it should manage a healthy week one total but it remains to be seen how it goes after thereafter.

Wanted had a bumper response outside the metroes of 90% plus but plexes of metroes like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore underperformed with 50% collections. Overall the masses have liked the film and business is set to pick up further in muslim centres on Tuesday as the Ramadan fasts comes to and end but the average metro multiplex business may curtail the all India business unless they pick up over the weekend.

IndiaFm is also reporting a good start for Wanted overall – I do wonder though the split on single screens vs. multiplexes will really hurt Wanted, expect multiplexes to pick up overall.

BO Update: Wanted picks up surprise after opening day
    Friday, September 18, 2009

The Salman Khan starrer Wanted which had opened, surprisingly, universally weak on its opening shows picked up by Friday evening shows.

The film has Salman Khan playing character of an apparent underworld man who surprises them by actually being undercover worker for the Indian Police; and mixes a heavy dosage of action with commercially popular songs. The film which is remake of Telugu cinema’s recordbreaking hit Pokhiri, appears headed for some success among the Hindi audiences as well. Post-release response to the film appears best in the Hindi circuits, with Delhi and Mumbai being ok also after pickup. Reports from theaters like Sheila in Delhi had 80-90% turnout for evening shows.

On the other hand, the multiplexes still haven’t taken to the film in a big way like Ghajini which saw huge opening weekend response from both multiplexes and single screens, nonetheless the pickup from single screens could help mitigate some losses from the former.

Dil Bole Hadippa remains as it had opened in the morning: so so in some multiplexes to weak elsewhere. So while the exact fate of Wanted is still unclear, this Yash Raj/Aditya Chopra film is heading to be a box office flop.

Box Office: Advance booking report for Wanted, Dil Bole Hadippa
      Thursday, September 17, 2009

The two major ‘biggies’, the much hyped Salman Khan starrer Wanted and the Yash Raj’s Rani Mukherji-Shahid Kapoor starrer Dil Bole Hadippa are both set to open to surprisingly subpar and weak initials despite a heavy promotional drive by both films and 4 star reviews from trade sections. Though for the fans, it should be worth noting that the opening for the Shahid Kapoor (in a relatively satellite role) feature in Dil Bole Hadippa has the edge over the Salman Khan starrer Wanted. However DBH is not going to be another Kaminey or Vivah or even Jab We Met for Shahid Kapoor as it’s not being billed as ‘his’ film, nor will it likely be a significant grosser for Yash Raj likely as the opening for DBH is set to be around 40% which is belowaverage/average. Wanted on the other hand looks surprisingly weak with opening in some theates in Calcutta looking to be as low as 12-15%, on average it appears to open at around 25-35%. Wanted has a slight edge in largely southern centers like Madras but even in south, the advance is well under expectations, and the number of screenings being allocated are also modest in volume, thus limiting the potential grosser amount for the film’s opening week.

What is interesting as Wanted is a remake of a Telugu hit Pokhiri which until recently was the biggest hit of Telugu cinema. It had been billed as this year’s Ghajini in some sections of the trade which is certainly not the case in terms of the opening. So if the film ultimately doesn’t generate major steam soon, it will be a setback for Salman Khan’s hopes of once again belonging to top echelon level stars at the Indian box office at the age 43. The top echelon right now can be said to be Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Shahrukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and possibly with the decent performance of Dostana and New York, John Abraham.

To be fair, Wanted being billed as ‘mass’ film may yet pick up if the early street reports are good and there is end of Ramzan coming which may help if word of mouth is good. But the subpar opening doesn’t bode too well for it and especially for DBH, the Yash Raj film as they pride themselves in convincing the viewers right from the getgo with well researched and planned promos in harnessing those critical 1st-weekend-grosses from the multiplexes. Case in point, their Ta Ra Rum Pum which too underperformed, but had a very high opening weekend in April, 2007 across the multiplexes in India.

Moving on, the reports for What’s Your Rashee releasing next week, starring Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja are encouraging in the early going.

  5. There’s a conundrum with masala films and Hindi multiplex audiences. It’s not just about resuscitating a patient but actually doing a Lazarus job on the dead. This is why I have such enormous admiration for what Aamir was able to achieve with Ghajini. He selected the right subject and then sold it the right way and of course his prestige was a huge factor. But to bring along a multiplex audience to the extent that this film shattered every box office record including those of the dominant genres is really an incredible achievement though one that continues to be underrated. In any case and getting back to Wanted Salman always had his single screen base intact. This was never going to be a problem. The issue was the multiplexes that have held back in the initial going. Now things could pick up but then it would be a WOM deal. A comparable film in the South with the Salman kind of star would have a massive opening. But the conundrum precisely is that it takes a star with more multiplex prestige to get the audiences in with a masala subject and yet most of these stars are really not acceptable for a downmarket audience. Plus there has to be a kind of bait and switch done. It is hard to convince multiplexes to be big on just regular masala far with no gimmick. On the other hand a guy like Salman who might be better suited for this subject doesn’t really have the right multiplex prestige. It’s very hard to split the difference. Aamir did it. I think Abhishek could in the right deal (obviously he wouldn’t start off where Aamir did) but I don’t know if he has any belief in this structure (ironically enough). He certainly passed up on the Pokkiri remake (Wanted in its early stages). when you do masala with other important stars you are at best doing fake or inauthentic masala like Dhoom or OSO. and again Aamir carefully built up a certain populist image as well as a great degree of seriousness over time. He could convince the audiences of anything. But I continue to find it puzzling, even disappointing, the extent to which Abhishek is not even willing to do the BnB kind of deal. I would take such a film over a Bourne remake any day of the week. And there are subjects aplenty in the South ripe for sensible remakes. Of course Aamir was also completely on the money in retaining the original Tamil director. No one in Hindi is perhaps ‘qualified’ to do this at this point. And of course Wanted also has a Southern figure as director.

  6. This is where the Aamir factor really comes into play, as you say. Even when all things are equal, Aamir’s presence alone give a film a humungous boost. Obviously, Salman is no more in the SRK-Aamir league, though he is still a top star. As you see, Wanted is nowhere in the range of a Ghajini, in spite of the publicity overdrive and all of it.

ON abhishek, I honestly don’t know what’s the deal with him. He’s becomming like Akshaye Khanna – who is considered a good actor with no real boxoffice clout. He’s just not seeming to be very ambitious on the BO front if you ask him, otherwise he would have chosen accordingly.

    Like

    • But there’s another way to look at it, his box office is much more in keeping with Aamir’s in the 90s. At the time aamir’s prestige always exceeded his pure box office and so it is with Abhishek. The analogy is not precise enough but it’s there. You stay ahead of the curve by compromising on your box office in the present. That’s what Aamir did, that’s what Abhishek is doing. He’s the only star who’s doing this in real terms. As for box office it’s easy enough to get success doing a Dostana (the cache this film has exceeds the gross) or some other genres. In a weird sense he was actually more vulnerable post-JBJ than he is today. why? Because distributors might consider him daft for not doing safer choices but for the choices he has they know no star can do better than him than Aamir. Again I’ve been saying this for years. Show me the different star who exceeds Abhishek’s gross like for like. So whether it’s a CDI or Kaminey or whatever they don’t exceed Guru’s gross. But yeah it’s true that he’s had some hard luck along the way, partly because he’s willing to take greater risks than most others, perhaps this strategy is too risky, time will tell. but even as things stand he seems to attract projects that any of his peers would do in a minute! The true box office clout comes about by being constantly safe at the box office. This happens when you stick to genre or do the calculated different. If Abhishek had done Kaminey and had exactly this gross no one would have called it a success or anything! So partly it’s the negative media coverage but more is also expected. But whether one agrees with his choices or not the fact that he’s sticking to his guns can’t be denied. Moreover the irony here is that even if he had vastly more box office success he couldn’t actually beat the projects he currently has on prestige and quality. How do you do better than Mehra, rathnam, Gowariker, Johar as a combo of prestige and commercial safety? I know of a few marquee names he did not accept over the last couple of years. But even where it stands how does one do better?! What explains the gap? Precisely that for all his patchy record since Guru no one in the trade or among directors thinks that his particular films are an accurate reflection of his box office. It’s not as if a BnB wouldn’t pay dividends today!

      Like

    • I disagree with the Khanna thing inasmuch as no one can seriously believe they’re in the same basket. Abhishek’s projects have been on the whole among the choicest since he got successful. Don’t see that with Akshaye. In terms of box office ambition I know for a fact he is but let’s say he’s not going to do it the regular way. Sometimes I too find this frustrating. I don’t see why he cannot do one very regular film just once a year. But that’s the path he’s chosen. Wouldn’t equate if with lack of box office ambition. of course the other point is that if the box office were everything some of those other huge stars wouldn’t be awash in a sea of mediocrity as they usually seem to be!

    • it’s hard to believe it’s 211 minutes though! That’s 3.5 hrs! I think the reviewer has been including the previews and interval as well. Now if it is really that length I think Abhishek should think long and hard about his own project! It’s one thing to be able to get away with JA with all the pomp and pageantry but a dark, political drama that is also a period and that does end happily for anyone is another matter. LOL! Then again if it weren’t so risky why would Abhishek do it?! Ha!

      • This is brutal punishment by Gowariker. How can he make a pop corn flick so long I will never know. No chance in hell I will watch it. The interest levels are much higher for Lagaan, Swades & JA since the technical and visual glamour is enticing enough…the only thing going for WYR for me is oggling at Priyanka for 3hours plus. And I’m not even in the mood for that!

        Like

    • AG should learn to tell a story in less than 3 hours.

      Like

      • I’m surprised he made Swades under 3 hrs. Specially since some of the deleted scenes here could as easily have been part of the film. Plus he also took out a song. The interesting thing though is that he’s a decent or better director (his subjects often don’t match his talents) with very poor sense of pace and editing. So again some of the JA deleted scenes are rather good and should have been in the film.

        Like

      • on that note Lagaan itself has a perfect block segment that was deleted. Again no director’s cuts in India. Lagaan could have been released in an extended version. The same for JA. You can do branching and have the theatrical and extended versions on the same disc. Same for Swades. There just isn’t the market for this in India.

      • also with that length he really shouldn’t have taken Harman. Shahid or Ranbir would have been way better. Because with such a long film you really don’t want the audience to mind the lead at any point.

Wanted, …Hadippa! bring audiences back to theatres

After a month’s lull, courtesy the lean Ramzan period, multiplexes were abuzz again Friday with two big starrers Dil Bole Hadippa! and Wanted drawing people to the theatres and doing good business.

“Both movies have done good business with an average opening of around 60 percent. In fact, Wanted is a must watch for Salman (Khan) fans. The movies will pick up gradually, specially since it’s an extended weekend with Eid on Monday,” Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas, told IANS.

“We have kept a 55-45 ratio for both the movies across all our properties as both have the potential for a smooth shelf life,” he added.

A source from PVR Cinemas said: “Dil Bole Hadippa! and Wanted both have brought us relief after Ramzan. While the former is good in multiplexes, the latter is very good in single-screens. We’ve had an approximate 50 percent occupancy till now and we are expecting good business, courtesy the long weekend.”

Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, Dil Bole Hadippa! has been directed by debutant Anurag Singh. It stars Rani Mukerji, Shahid Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Dalip Tahil and item girls Rakhi Sawant and Sherlyn Chopra.

Salman-starrer Wanted has been distributed by Sahara One Motion Pictures and Surinder Kapoor. Produced by Boney Kapoor, it is dancer-choreographer Prabhudheva’s first Hindi movie as a director. It stars Ayesha Takia Azmi in the lead.

“Reports for both movies have been quite encouraging. We’ve kept 10 shows each for both the movies and are expecting a good business in the coming week. It will pick up over the weekend,” said Munish Sharma, general manager (marketing), Satyam Cineplex.

Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida, is, however, disappointed with the initial business.

“Opening for both the movies has been average only around 50 percent… none of the shows for either has been houseful since the morning despite having 22 shows for …Hadippa! and 14 shows for ‘Wanted’ across all our eight screens,” said Awasthi.

“But Wanted is better than …Hadippa! and we are hoping the movies will pick up momentum over the long weekend. They will also have a good run of almost two weeks,” he added.

Said Amit Shah, chief manager (programming) of DLF DT cinemas: ” Dil Bole Hadippa! has done an average business of 45 percent vis-a-vis Wanted that has brought in only 30 per cent despite having close to 10 shows each for both the movies. We are, however, hoping the business to pull up Friday evening onwards as there are three holidays coming up.”

The multiplexes are confident that both the movies will maintain a “healthy” run on the big screen despite Ashutosh Gowariker’s What’s Your Raashee? releasing on September 25.

“Dil Bole Hadippa and Wanted won’t get affected despite What’s Your Rashee?,” said Raizada.

“…Raashee? is a long movie spanning around three-and-half hours so we won’t be able to organise that many shows for it. We’ll have to fill in the space with others and considering the other two are already A-listers, they’ll have a smooth stretch,” he added.

BO Update: Wanted limited pickup on surprise after opening day
    Sunday, September 20, 2009

The Salman Khan starrer Wanted which had opened, surprisingly, universally weak on its opening shows picked up over the weekend though not in a major way.

The film has Salman Khan playing character of an apparent underworld man who surprises them by actually being undercover worker for the Indian Police; and mixes a heavy dosage of action with commercially popular songs. The film which is remake of Telugu cinema’s recordbreaking hit Pokhiri, appears headed for some success among the Hindi audiences if it can maintain pace over next several days. Post-release response to the film appears best in the Hindi circuits, with Delhi and Mumbai being ok also after pickup. Reports from theaters like Sheila in Delhi had 80-90% turnout for evening shows.

The downer however remains that the multiplexes still seem to be largely shunning this film checking in at 30-40% even on Sunday, unlike a Ghajini which saw huge opening weekend response from both multiplexes and single screens. A major movie nowadays can’t emerge a significant grossser/hit from decent business at single screens alone.

Dil Bole Hadippa remains as it had opened Friday morning: so so in some multiplexes to weak elsewhere. So while the exact fate of Wanted is still unclear, this Yash Raj/Aditya Chopra film is heading to be a box office flop.

Overseas in USA, DBH has grossed approximately under $240k while Wanted is estimated to have grossed $140k for the weekend.

BO: Wanted, Dil Bole Hadippa open to mixed response

MUMBAI: The two big movie releases this week – Wanted and Dil Bole Hadippa – have garnered mixed response from the audience. While in multiplexes, both the movies had an average occupancy in the range of 45 – 60 per cent, in single screens, Wanted had an edge over its rival.

On the opening day, the advance booking for Dil Bole Hadippa was higher at Cinemax, whereas Salman Khan’s Wanted sold better tickets in current according to Cinemax India senior vice president Devang Sampat.

On the other hand FUN Cinemas COO Vishal Kapur informs that on the opening day, both movies had 100% per cent occupancies in their Chandigarh and Ahemdabad chains for the first two shows. In Mumbai, however, the movies had an average occupancy of about 50 per cent, whereas the advance booking was in the range of 25 – 30 per cent on Friday.

According to information available with Businessofcinema.com, Wanted has opened better in the North at multiplexes. However, on Saturday, the movie’s collections in places like Indore, Lucknow and Varanasi were 15 per cent less than Friday’s collections.

With the Eid celebrations beginning Monday, expectations are that the movies will pick up in the week.

Dil Bole Hadippa grossed a decent 12 crore nett over its first weekend. The film performed well at multiplexes especially in the Delhi/NCR area while most single screens had low collections. There is a holiday for Eid on Monday which should help weekday collections and the first week may finish around 20 crore nett.

The biggest advantage the film has its very reasonable costs. The total investment in the film by Yashraj Films is around 25 crore and it seems like at that Dil Bole Hadippa will generate revenue of 30-35 crore from all sources or even more if it can sustain at the box office in the coming days

  25. Wanted Grosses 18 Crore Nett Over First Weekend

    Monday 21st September 2009 10.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Wanted grossed around 18 crore nett over its first weekend in India. The performance was excellent in single screens all over especially Bihar and CP Berar where business was huge. The multiplexes did show a improvement in collections on Saturday and Sunday but the jump was ot huge.

Wanted should emerge a Semi Hit to Hit film mainly on the strength of Salman Khan’s star power. Monday is a holiday and Eid festivities will end which will mean a jump in collections in muslim centres especially in action loving areas like UP, Bihar and Nizam. The first week is likely to end up in the 30 crore nett region which is a good result as it has been sold at fair prices in most circuits.

The underperformance at metro multiplexes will be a dampener on its overall business but it was sort of expected that metro multiplexes will have lower collections as the film has been in the making for a longtime which gives its a dated look.

    Bollywood’s seven-billion rupee gamble

Big BBollywood is preparing for what is historically its most lucrative period of the year with a string of big budget releases, hoping to end 2009 on a high 12 disappointing months.

Like the Christmas period for Hollywood, the run-up to the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, on October 17 is seen as a banker for Bollywood as many Indians are on holiday and looking to be entertained.

A glut of new films are due out as the 2.3-billion-dollar Hindi-language movie business looks to recover from a multiplex cinema boycott, swine flu fears that forced some theatres to close, and a series of expensive flops.

Trade analyst Komal Nahta predicts “good times” for the industry over the next three months.

“About seven billion rupees (145 million dollars) is at stake for Bollywood in the last quarter, as there are nearly two dozen films releasing by December,” he said.

But others, like the director of Shemaroo Films, Hiren Gada, are skeptical about whether the new releases, some made for up to 900 million rupees, can recoup their outgoings.

He told the Sunday Business Standard the stakes are “extremely high for both producers and distributors as it is the first festive season in several years where over half-a-dozen very big films are scheduled for release”.

One unnamed analyst also told the newspaper that the films were “far too costly” and even if they do well, they may fall short of the investment put in.

Big budget films like the Warner Bros. co-production Chandni Chowk To China, Delhi 6 and the Shah Rukh Khan’s Billu all disappointed this year at the box office.

Producer-director Karan Johar’s comedy Wake Up Sid kicks off the battle of the blockbusters on October 2, hoping to steal a march on three major films that are out on Diwali weekend itself.

All The Best, a comedy with Sanjay Dutt, Blue, an underwater odyssey with a cameo by Kylie Minogue, and Salman Khan’s second “comeback” film, Main Aur Mrs Khanna (Me And Mrs Khanna), are out on October 16.

The following week sees the release of Khan’s third new film, London Dreams, about two friends who dream of becoming rock stars, and the animation Aladin, with voices by Dutt and Amitabh Bachchan.

Bachchan returns in November with Paa (Father), about a boy with a premature ageing condition, going up against Kurbaan (Sacrifice), with Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Jail and Tum Mile (You Met Me).

Jail has been the source of much gossip here over actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who stripped for the role. Tum Mile (Met you), with Emraan Hashmi, has the devastating 2005 Mumbai floods as its backdrop.

Actor-producer-director Aamir Khan rounds off the year with the release of 3 Idiots on Christmas Day, December 25.

The end of the two-month multiplex boycott, prompted by producers’ claims of unfair revenue sharing, led to the creation of a committee to organise the dates of new releases, many of which were postponed during the stand-off.

The committee, set up to maximise revenues after reported 63-million-dollar losses and avoid release clashes, has warned producers that they face a stiff fine if they change the date of a film’s release without telling them.

But Diwali regularly sees films compete with one another.

Main Aur Mrs Khanna director Prem Soni said he’s unconcerned about going head-to-head with All The Best and Blue, taking heart from previous years where several simultaneous releases have done well.

“All films releasing on Diwali day have a different kind of subject,” he said. “One is an action thriller, another one is a comedy and mine is a romantic film.

“Ultimately, a good film works irrespective of whenever it is released.”

BO: Wanted nets 175 mn; Dil Bole Hadippa business at Rs 115 mn

MUMBAI: The opening weekend box office numbers of Wanted and Dil Bole Hadippa (DBH) are in. While Wanted has done a net business of approximately Rs 175 million (Rs 17.50 crore) in India, Yash Raj Films’ Dil Bole Hadippa’s domestic net collections stand at Rs 115 million (Rs 11.50 crore).

As was earlier reported by Businessofcinema.com, while Wanted did good business at single screens, DBH did a decent show at multiplexes but failed to pull audience in single screens.

According to information available with Businessofcinema.com, Wanted is expected to do a net business of Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crore) in its first week run in India, whereas DBH has the potential of netting Rs 210 million (Rs 21 crore) domestically in week 1.

With the long weekend ending with the Eid festivities on Monday, there is likely to be a steep drop in collections from Tuesday onwards. Nonetheless, Wanted is likely to do decent business in Muslim populated areas in India (B and C centers) post Eid. However, a good run in only the single screens is not going to be enough for Wanted.

    • with 17.5 crores over the weekend, Mon will have to be exceptionally strong for the film to have any chance to get to 30 crores for the week and it’s still unlikely if there are steep drops from Tue.

I read somewhere (maybe BOI) that Wanted will have a better Mon than Ghajini because of the holiday. Gimme a break!

    ‘Meatballs’ Is the Box-Office Choice
    By JULIE BLOOM

A big glop of spaghetti fell on the heads of Matt Damon, Jennifer Anniston and Megan Fox at the weekend box office. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs,” left, an animated adaptation of the children’s book, sold about $30.1 million in tickets at North American theaters, a robust total fueled partly by a marketing campaign involving images of raining noodles. Imax and 3-D screenings also boosted sales. The $90 million “Meatballs” trampled three star-driven pictures. “The Informant!,” a $22 million dramedy directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Mr. Damon, was a weak second with about $10.5 million in sales, according to box-office tracking services. A holdover from the previous week, “Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All by Myself,” was third with about $10.1 million (and a cumulative total for Lionsgate of $37.9 million). Ms. Anniston and Aaron Eckhart, starring in the $18 million “Love Happens” from Universal and Relativity Media, were fourth with about $8.5 million. Ms. Fox, from the “Transformers” movies, failed as a solo draw. Her “Jennifer’s Body,” a horror comedy written by Diablo Cody and produced by Fox for about $16 million, opened fifth with an estimated $6.8 million.

Was pleasantly surprised by the movie and liked it quite a bit. Its 3D only so the prices were slightly higher. This is not the regular 3D but uses the technology of a company called real D. The effects were pretty good and the preview of James Cameron’s Avatar which is also in real D was out of this world.

On a seperate note saw True Romance the other day on a friends recommendation and was blown away by the movie. surpised that a movie buff like me had never seen it before or heard about it. The movie is directed by Tony Scott (Ridley Scotts brother) and written by Tarantino. The movie came out in the early 90’s but still holds up pretty good, good shelf life. It has a host of stars like Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken, Val kilmer, Gary Oldman, James Gandolfini, Dennis Hopper, Tom Sizemore and Chris Penn. The 10-15 minute scene between Hopper and Walken is a classic. Brad Pitts chraracter is also hilarious with Pitt coming with several of his own improvisations outside the script.

  33. Wanted sees record breaking collections on Eid holiday

MUMBAI: Salman Khan’s Wanted has seen record breaking collections for a movie on a Monday. On the occasion of Eid (Monday), the movie did a net business of approximately Rs 72.5 million (Rs 7.25 crore).

Net collections of the movie on Tuesday stood in the range of Rs 55 million (Rs 5.50 crore) in India. According to this latest development, the movie’s net business by the end of Tuesday (five days) was Rs 302.5 million (Rs 30.25 crore).

Wanted has picked up tremendous pace in single screens across B and C centers on Monday and the audience continued to flock theaters on Tuesday too. The day after Eid is known as Bassi Eid, which is the day when the Muslim populace gets out of the house to wish each other. While the single screens have shown a huge jump for Wanted, the jump at multiplexes has not been as high.

While Businessofcinema.com had reported yesterday that the week 1 business of Wanted should be approximately Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crore), in the light of this development, Wanted’s net business in its first week has the potential to be in the range of Rs 350 – 360 million (Rs 35 – 36 crore).

  35. Well done, Salman. It is a tribute to his star power and the degree to which his fans and fans of masala cinema were deprived that people have lapped up Wanted, a far from a perfect film ( going by the reviews ). The Curse of Boney has been broken when it comes to remakes of South Indian films. He has the chance to have a one, two, three punch with relatively safer films coming up -MAMK and London Dreams.

    Like

    • Don’t think London Dreams will work. MAMK is also a bit tricky with Salman. But barring MAMK Salman has very few ‘right’ projects either in terms of prestige or even in terms of multiple films making this sort of impact. That he has a base is not in doubt but remember that Wanted isn’t really strategy on this part, just something he stumbles upon (by the way this is film Abhishek passed up on and suspect would even now). Now if he uses this to do mostly masala that would be one thing. But he’s like the Dharam sort of star (though still not where Dharam was) who always has a certain cache, is always dependable and yet who is never in danger of entering the real stratosphere of top stars. Where I do think his narrative works for him, as I also said the other day, is that he produces a hit in a couple of years (last one was Partner with Govinda/Dhawan in ’07, before that MSK with Akshay/Dhawan in ’05, MPKK did fairly well that year, again if you go back before this there is perhaps an even longer break..). Consider this, if this were the yardstick used for abhishek he’d have no problem at all! And by the way Salman started off with a bang in his career accumulating 6-7 plus films. He was then in the doldrums till he eventually reinvented himself with Dhawan. In the late 90s or so and leading up to this decade he was pretty consistent with some big grossers. But again he hasn’t done very much this decade at all. It’s true that sometimes a star’s appeal transcends his films but note how this structure works only for a star who doesn’t seem to be really moving up at any point. No other star either considered a very top one or one considered as heading to the top or at least seen in terms of a such a ‘debate’ could ever afford this sort of career. We see how Akshay had had problems after a few flops. This after giving so many in recent years.

      Like

      • actually this is bad news for SRK.. because so much of his career has been about getting the biggest numbers.. he’s been increasingly challenged of late.. now we see Salman doing it with not even a big banner or a favored genre! By the way looking at everything an initial less than 50 crores should be considered subpar for MNIK. i.e. if SRK still wants to make a point.

        Like

  36. London Dreams looks like a Jaan-E-Maan in the making. MAMK is not really a Salman starrer (I think) – think both won’t do well.

I don’t think Salman is a) Smart enough b) Smart enough or c) Smart enough to sustain a period of success at the box office. BUT if he strikes he can strike big. Just too inconsistent. His choices are poor in general like Sanjay Dutt – another star who could have been a huge huge star but for silly choices.

But Salman has an edge (also over Dutt) in that he still remains a relevant star and any discussion on the 90’s box office will always include him. Films like MPK and HAHK created history so by default he is a relevant and important star in the past couple of decades.

    Like

  37. You are right that Salman does not have any good options but I think that its Salman’s own fault that the big banners are reluctant to work with him. If I put myself in their shoes, I too would be reluctant to invest crores of rupees with an actor who is temperamental, reports late on the sets, throws tantrums and is generally unprofessional. Salman has to work to change his image and only then would he attract the best of banners.

    • I think it’s beyond all of this though.. he’s a victim of the multiplex wave in many ways.. his base is not particularly well represented in multiplex economics..

BO: Wanted drops after holiday, Baabarr falls victim, WYR test for actresses
    Thursday, September 24, 2009

Last week’s Baabarr fell victim to its fate at the box office with collections not even making past 1 crore. The film never even could get started high enough to drop. Other recently released films like Aagey Se Right have witnessed similar fortunes, though better than Baabarr.

The Salman Khan starrer Wanted had a good show Monday and Tuesday over Eid holiday, with pickups in multiplexes on Monday and Tuesday to the tune of 30%, after having collected under expectation 15-16 crores over the opening weekend due to weak performance at multiplexes. At the end of the week, he film did not draw universal appreciation or Ghajini type matching collections but it fared better than a string of previous duds featuring the actor. Its backdrop of the character ‘Radhey’ and its songs like ‘Tose Pyar’ gave it enough resonance in Hindi circuits this week, helping secure advantage in middle India over its rival Dil Bole Hadipaa.

But after a good Monday and Tuesday coming off the extended holiday, Wanted’s collections dropped on Wednesday and the advance bookings and screenings for 2nd weekend are also looking at some noticeable cuts.

The film’s patronage is restricted due to certain content and misogynastic tropes, which is stopping a wider allowance. The film has fared poorly overseas, grossing reportedly between $93k-$217k in USA its opening weekend (American Estimate: $93k, Indian Promoter Eros claims: $217k). Its performance in single screens continues to be above average to good for the most part. Nonetheless, in order for the delayed 50+ crore action sfx film to break even, less recovery from satellite/music rights, it needs theatrical share of about 40 crores (around 70 crores net) to break even. But that is not going to be easy because screening volumes for 2nd week in India have been cut by 50%+ from too many high grossing theaters. Satyam Cinema in Chennai for example will be holding only 2 screenings of Wanted from this weekend onwards.

Coming up is an important test. ‘What’s Your Rashee’ starring Priyanka Chopra in 12 roles will be a novel test for her and Harman Baweja as well as for audiences willing to patronize such new themed films at the box office. The advance booking has opened on the tune of about 15% on moderate volumes, indicating the opening may be ho hum on Friday.

The movie could pick up but if it fails to score, it will help lend dent to the feminist calls for producing more movies around actresses in focus. As Dil Bole Hadippa tried the same and failed at the box office. The star here is Priyanka Chopra but with the rare exception of a Sridevi, Hema Malini and Rekha (Khoobsurat 1980), actresses so far haven’t really been able to take the lead and successfully pull it off at the box office over the last 15 years.

The two steadiest movies of the year had been the medium/low budget fares, Shahid Kapoor’s Kaminey and Life Partner featuring Govinda. Govinda will be back in comedy routine with David Dhawan with Do Knot Disturb on October 2. But he will be seen in a dramatic light in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan helping the ‘hero’ (Vikram) try to free Aishwarya Rai from the arms of low caste ‘villain’ Abhishek Bachchan coming up in a few months.

Usually record opening collections for Hindi films are recorded by films which release during the Diwali-Christmas season from October-December. So starting next month, October is packed with big releases in the form of Karan Johar’s Wake Up Sid, Do Knot Disturb, Aladin, All the Best, and Blue on Diwali which will see Akshay Kumar return to screen in a action-thriller opposite Katrina Kaif with major appearance by Australian sensation Kylie Minogue.

    Like

    • again it’s all about selection.. it’s not fair to bring up Chennai as an example for a Pokkiri remake when the audiences there have seen the Vijay remake and many have also seen the Mahesh Babu original. Much as in Hyderabad even Hindi speakers who would not normally watch Telugu films have seen Okkadu and Pokkiri.

      Like

    • by the way the IBOS number for Kaminey is 50 crores which is the highest I’ve seen anywhere..

    • also don’t see what it particularly misogynistic about Wanted. Or at least it’s no moreso than many from the Yashraj brand. In fact a case could be made that the latter are worse. Where I will agree is that a certain kind of masala representation might be understood as such by multiplex audiences whereas the same would assuredly consider Johar progressive (at least during the 90s and a little beyond).

Wanted is a craze across many centres in the country. The first week business of Wanted in Bihar will be around 1.20 crore nett which will be a new circuit record beating the 1.12 crore nett (8days) of Ghajini. In other small circuits like Assam and Orissa it may also set new highs. In Orissa the film is a rage with collections nearly three times higher than regular big films apart from Ghajini. Many B+C centres in CP Berar, Ci, Rajasthan and Nizam are also showing higher collections than Ghajini.

The craze of the film can be put into perspective with the collections below. Normally a hit film shows 50% of its Friday collections on Wednesday but Wanted is showing similar or even better figures at many centres outside the metroes.

    Lucknow

    Friday – 6.38 lakhs

    Wednesday – 7.66 lakhs

    Varanasi

    Friday – 2.63 lakhs

    Wednesday – 3.07 lakhs

    Indore

    Friday – 7.55 lakhs

    Wednesday – 6.20 lakhs

Lucknow and Varanasi are A grade centres of UP while Indore is an A grade centre of CI. The B and C centres of UP, Bihar, CP Berar, CI, Rajasthan, Nizam, Assam and Orissa are just phenomenal to put it mildly.

    Like

    • by the way the term ‘A grade centers of UP’ is misleading because this does not mean very much nationally when even the best gross Lucknow can throw out is a minute fraction of just a decent Ahmedabad gross let alone a Bombay! One doesn’t even have to get into Orissa! All of this goes to show the film’s strength in smaller centers but doesn’t get to the heart of the matter which is gross. The fact that BOI are only referring to these centers is telling.

      Like

    • Both BOI and IBOS are necessarily not contradicting each other since the former is looking at smaller centers in certain areas that do not produce huge grosses.

If you’re positive on the film it is a mark of ‘authenticity’, if not it’s a sign of regressiveness, even atavism.

      • I cannot understand how somebody can invest 40 cr on a star who gives a hit once in 3/4 years. Also to recover a budget of 40 cr, the film has to do phenomenal business, at least 60cr in India if we assume they can recover the remaining costa from other avenues and that is only to break even. 47. The Economics Of Wanted And Dil Bole Hadippa

    Friday 25th September 2009 10.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Both Eid releases look set to make good money with Wanted all set to do Super Hit or even Blockbuster theatrical business in India. Dil Bole Hadippa will probably have to settle for Average theatrical business in India.

Wanted has a budget of 35 crore and with print and publicity costs of 7-8 crore it’s total investment goes to around 42-43 crore. Indian theatrical business should finish in the 35-40 crore range, Overseas should give around 4 crore and another 17-20 crore can be expected from Satellite, Music and Home Video which would mean revenue in the 56-64 crore range.

Dil Bole Hadippa has a budget of 18 crore with print publicity costs of 6-7 crore making its total investment around 24-25 crore. Indian theatrical business looks likely to be 14-16 crore, Overseas will be around 5 crore and Satellite, Music and Home Video should add another 8-10 crore giving Dil Bole Hadippa revenue in the range of 27-31 crore.

      • if they mean distributor shares they’;e saying it’s going to be 80 crores minimally.. remember if much more of a film’s share is coming from the single screens it has to gross that much more to give a 40 crore nett or so because of vastly unequal taxation rates between singles and multiplexes.

of course BOI and fuzzy math go together like fish and water! They’ve been going crazy over Wanted and all the while they’ve been talking only about minor centers in CI and UP and orissa! Not even Delhi this time as they usually do!

Thankfully Jay will illuminate us tomorrow morning.

as I’ve said many times it will be great if the film does very well but one just gets fed up with the propaganda exercises every time. Another BOI makes a comparison with Ghajini using two negligible centers! Can there be any comparison with Ghajini? But the whole bit is framed misleadingly if not blatantly inaccurately.

Wanted is a superhit and the distributors in India should make more than Rs 40 crore after paying for theatres rentals and other overhead charges. While in India, Wanted is one of the three biggest hits in the last three years, in Pakistan, it’s the biggest hit amongst all the Hindi films ever released there.””

  49. Wanted a Hit or super-Hit. It is disappointing for me.
I watched the Telugu Pokrhi and liked it very much. Mahesh babu was exceptional. Somehow I could not think this becoming a Hindi movie. Also with Salman as a Hero. Maybe a much younger Hero could have suited the role better. But the film is turning out to be successfully and Salman proved a point with stardom and marketing skills.
Movies like Ghajini, Wanted are successfully for the hype and media publicity than the content. I disagree with many here who label Ghajini, Wanted as a Masala film. The violence element in the both these films are gruesome and to much of Mara-mari. For me a Masala movie are the lies of AAA, Naseeb, Yadon Ki Bharath, etc..Anyway may be I missed a point in the Masala movie thread.
What disappoints me is the see a movie like Delhi-6, Swades,Guru become under performers compare to the likes of Ghajini, Wanted and OSO. (TZP was exception.)
So are the masses still are in favor these kind of movies?
So can Superstar sell any kind movie with his publicity?
( Yuvraaj failed, but I don’t feel it was as much marketed as Wanted was)
