JayShah’s Saturday Box Office Column – Wanted Takes Excellent Opening; Dil Bole Hadippa! Relatively Poor
New Releases
Wanted
Remake of Telugu hit Pokiri, Wanted starring Salman Khan and Ayesha Takia had a formidable first week haul at the box office. The opening day was less than exceptional but the film led by a sterling performance in small centres has captured the lion’s share of the battle with Dil Bole Hadippa!
The promotion of Wanted was high octane for a Salman starrer and although multiplexes have performed decently to good, overall it is the smaller centres where the film is thriving best. Reports of high occupancies throughout the week in single centres are reflected by in large by some of the numbers recorded in smaller centres.
Week 1 Wanted vs Week 1 Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
Mumbai -42% means that Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is 42% MORE than Wanted in Week 1

The cumulative centre total in 26 centres for Wanted = 8.23Cr (ignored 4 centres)
The cumulative centre total in 26 centres for RNBDJ = 10.64Cr (ignored 4 centres)
This means that Wanted is 77% of RNBDJ’s total (8.23/10.64 = 77%)
Using RNBDJ’s Week 1 total of 40.0Cr, Wanted’s Week 1 = 77% * (40.0) = 30.9Cr
A similar exercise with Luck and Kidnap yields 32.1Cr & 30.9Cr respectively
Wanted 1 Week Total = 31.0-32.0Cr(Week 1) = 31.0-32.0Cr
Verdict – Fantastic Week One
Wanted’s first week is fantastic considering its business is driven by abnormal means in today’s time. The proportionate business coming from single screens is far more than usual which translates into a lot more tickets sold than your usual movie today. Taking that into consideration, the achievement of breaking 30Cr is pretty significant but its clear additional stronger business from multiplexes could have really given the film a haul greater than 35Cr.
Thus far the film is riding successfully and the second week should prove to be decisive in a positive overall verdict. The film almost certainly will give Salman his first major success since 2007’s Partner and is proving to be a rage in single centres.
Dil Bole Hadippa!
The Rani Mukerjee and Shahid Kapoor starrer Dil Bole Hadippa! never really threatened the box office from the get go. Despite a decent start in multiplexes, the word of mouth and critical reviews were never in favour of a long run and after a decent opening weekend the film has seen a crash at the box office.
Week 1 Dil Bole Hadippa! vs Week 1 Jannat
Mumbai 18% means that Jannat is 18% LESS than Dil Bole Hadippa! in Week 1

The cumulative centre total in 24 centres for Dil Bole Hadippa! = 5.05Cr (ignored 1 centre)
The cumulative centre total in 24 centres for Jannat = 3.98Cr (ignored 1 centre)
This means that Dil Bole Hadippa! is 127% of Jannat’s total (5.05/3.98 = 127%)
Using Jannat’s Week 1 total of 14.0Cr, Dil Bole Hadippa!’s Week 1 = 127% * (14.0) = 17.8Cr
A similar exercise with Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic & Raaz – TMC yields 16.0Cr & 17.6Cr respectively
Dil Bole Hadippa! 1 Week Total = 16.0-18.0Cr(Week 1) = 16.0-18.0Cr
Verdict – Disappointing Week One
Despite considerable marketing and pre-release expectations, Dil Bole Hadippa! is a failure overall. The opening week haul is rather weak considering the lucrative release timing and with word of mouth poor the film’s second week prospects are low. In all the chances of going past 20Cr is all the film can aim for.
After Kaminey’s relative success, Shahid Kapoor has a flop on his hands whereas Rani Mukerjee’s run of poor performing films continues.

Single-Screen Cinemas Get New Lease Of Life
September 26, 2009 by TFSJ
wantedThe mind-boggling collections of Wanted at single-screen cinemas across the country have made owners of such cinemas heave a collective sigh of relief.
It is after ages that many of the cinemas have seen such bumper collections. The last film which scored fabulously well in single-screen cinemas was Ghajini, but Wanted has smashed the records of even Ghajini at several single-sceen cinemas. Some of the single-screens, where Ghajini was not released but where Wanted was released, have got to see dream collections like never before! The box-office performance of Wanted in the single-screens of India has brought the spotlight on such cinemas once again, more so because collections of the film have not been half as good in the multiplexes.
This goes to prove that raw action as in Wanted and Ghajini is still the staple diet of the public which frequents single-screen cinemas. If Ghajini simultaneously swept the audience off its feet in the multiplexes across the nation, it was because although its action was raw, its love story held a strong appeal for the gentry. That appeal for the classes and the multiplex-frequenting public is missing in Wanted, which is the reason why its collections in the multiplexes, especially of metropolitian cities like Bombay and Delhi, are not half as good as those of Ghajini.

I am glad that Nahata at least mentioned Ghajini here.
In this media narrative what is being missed is once again the anti-Aamir move. Ghajini was sold as a massive blockbuster but not as the historic blockbuster it was. Meanwhile Wanted is being sold as a historic single screen film when it certainly isn’t matching Ghajini even in these (the trade uses much like Nahata here the classic ‘some centers’ refrain.. well every film beats some other film in ‘some’ centers). Ghajini did 60-65 crores in week 1 which means it was a monster in every kind of center — A,B,C & Z! The BOI line has been that it had paid previews and what not. Yeah, if only this were all it took for films to get to 120 crores. Well Wanted had the holiday period too!

What’s Your Rashee? Opens To A Poor Response
Saturday 26th September 2008 10.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
What’s Your Rashee opened to a poor 25-30% response on its first day. The morning shows were dismal with some improvement as the day went along. Premium multiplexes in the big centres recorded better collections. Overall the film will find it hard to make a mark at the box office.

Superb writeup here Jay.. my own sense would be that it’s done probably not more than 30 crores but I of course defer to you. On the whole though and looking at how the multiplexes have behaved I’d be surprised if this did much more than Kaminey. This would still be very good for a film of this sort of course.

Despite everything I’ve said here I do stand to correction but the 36 crore number quoted by BOI just seems like science fiction though it has often been their strategy to really make films ‘top heavy’ so as to account for later falls. Note how they’ve readjusted many of their older numbers in recent times. So for example OSO stands at 37 crores now (week 1). Wanted at 36 crores is doing the same?! Don’t think so. LOL! OSO was ahead by 3 crores or so just in Bombay! And OSO was pretty good in small centers in week 1. So how did Wanted match it?! And if it did Salman must be a much bigger star than SRK doing this much in very basic masala with not even proper multiplex participation!

Delhi has been referred to as unreported, On Bombay Taran now says it’s that number with 1 for FH. So it indicates a complete one in my view. His own writeup here is very toned down about the multiplexes. Nahata makes this even more clear. So the number it seems to me is consistent with this. Much as Delhi itself was never referenced by BOI throughout the week even as they were ecstatic about the film. They always talk about Delhi. So one doesn’t get the sense that major metros were spectacular anywhere.
I do agree that it’s much harder to accurately calculate for a film that disproportionately huge in the smaller centers. At the same time certain facts come up. Going by Taran’s numbers in each case Wanted does exactly as much as SR in Bombay, does only 12 lakhs more than SR in Indore, the 67 lakh Delhi number is very incomplete but SR was 2.3 crores here so it’s fairly safe to assume that Wanted despite the sing;e/double screens isn’t outperforming SR in the major metros (speculative at this point but not an unfair one I think). That leaves the small, smaller, smallest centers.
Smaller centers even when ‘historic’ (and not all are..) can’t really add up crores and crores. So for example if a center does 3 lakhs where most films do 1.5 lakhs consider how many of these centers it takes to get to a crores! The UP centers that BOI have been harping about are still rather small in terms of gross. Again if you run many of these small centers versus many older ones you’d really see
that the ‘historic’ bit is an exaggeration. This is a hard one to do though inasmuch as small centers are hard to accurately represent in any model. I’m not saying it can’t be over 30 but the major metros would have to show significant distance with SR. If SR is taken as 25 crores I don’t know if small centers could give you 6-7 crores given that even in Indore which is one of the largest among the very small centers you just have a 12 lakh differential. The only reason I’m harping on SR is because when I saw the Mumbai number for Wanted I remembered SR was exactly the same. The major metro single/double screens are all represented in the major metro figures and at least in Bombay they couldn’t make up for the multiplexes. The small centers, let alone the really small ones, cannot create that kind of differential. again I stand to correction on all of this of course.
But again your range still seems reasonable. looking at the Bombay number though and moving away from the gross debate I doubt this film will hold to any significant extent in the multiplexes, on top of the fact that it has been just about decent here. The media narrative on this film is set and at least the propaganda here is serving a single screen film so something to cheer about but this will be a film with numbers all over the place. I would be surprised if it did much more than Kaminey which would still be good for the film all things considered.

And again even a 45 crore gross (since I’m not bothered about the budget here) would be very good for the film let alone anything more. What I’m just commenting on here is once again the media narrative which is completely crazy. Of course one must also ask: why does a media that otherwise only supports multiplexes and thumbs its nose at single screens suddenly become a big champion of the latter?!

Let’s spare a thought for DBH as well! This always looked very poor. As I suggested earlier Shahid was probably cringing at this one. Having said that this film has become so much of a Rani affair (with some justification looking at the previews and plotline) in the media that perhaps he gets off scot free!

I agree… Shahid is viewed as having taken a backseat to Rani in this film. He doesn’t look that interested in some parts of the film (as in his soul doesn’t seem to be in it as much as Rani’s is). Not much is expected from Milenge Milenge. Chance Pe Dance is probably the next acid test for him.

I should add again here that the whole stereotyping of smaller centers (they only like action) is unfair. Whatever concerns they have are more adequately represented in masala cinema which often has an action component. This doesn’t mean that they’re automatons only flocking to action films in droves!
But yet once more shame on Bollywood. Ghajini was made by a Southern director who remade his Tamil film for Aamir. Now wanted was also remade off the biggest Telugu grosser ever (now outdone by Magadheera according to some reporting) by Prabhudeva!
What will it take Bombay to draw some lessons here?! Then again who among the current directors could make a masala film even if they wished to?! They’re all Bandra boys!

I finally saw New York and I must say I’m surprised at its hit status. It’s a passable film and it does what it says on the tin. I never expected an insightful look at terrorism or 9/11 (after Fanaa, I’ve given up on Yashraj’s approach to politics) but, for once, I wish that companies like YRF would go the whole hog and push the envelope instead of trotting out the old line of “Americans = bad, Muslims = victims”. I mean, this message 9 years after 9/11?!
The invoking of the infamous tormenting images from Iraq was in very poor taste. It was only put in for shock value.
I have very little hopes for Kurbaan. Apparently, it has a similar plot twist with Kareena being aware of Saif’s terrorist activities but with him thinking that she doesn’t know anything.

Box Office: What’s Your Raashee length mars; Fast Forward dull
MUMBAI: The two films that released this weekend – UTV Motion Pictures’ What’s Your Raashee? and Anjum Rizwi’s Fast Forward have not had a very good start at the box office.
While compared to Fast Forward, What’s Your Raashee? opened well, however it was not in line with expectations. Fast Forward hand had a below average opening and has not managed to woo the audience at all.
One of the reasons for What’s Your Raashee? not opening well, is the length of the film. The film has duration of three and a half hours, which has not gone down too well with the audience. According to sources, the producers are planning to chop the length of the film by 10 – 12 minutes by Sunday. At the time of filing this story, UTV Motion Pictures’ officials were not available for comment.
Speaking to Businessofcinema.com about the box office performance of the two movies, PVR Cinemas programming head Prakhar Joshi said, “Fast Forward is running in only two of our properties and the opening has been below average. What’s Your Raashee? opened around 80 per cent on the higher side and 50 per cent on the lower side across our properties. The female audience is enjoying the film more than the male audience.”
Inox vice president vice president programming and distribution Utpal Acharya informs, “What’s Your Raashee? opened to about 40 per cent occupancy and then went up to 55 – 60 per cent over the weekend. The length of the film is the main problem and it’s an out and out female film.”
On the other hand, Salman Khan’s Wanted is holding steady at single screens and is also doing a decent run at multiplexes. According to information available, the movie’s first week net collections are in the range of Rs 350 – 360 million (Rs 35 – 36 crore). The movie has performed beyond expectations and is on its way to becoming the biggest hits of the year so far. Moreover, Dil Bole Hadippa has also not found favour with the audience and has witnessed a drop in collections through the week. This, coupled with the average opening of What’s Your Rashee? and Fast Forward, is likely to work in favour of Wanted, which has now entered its second week. An icing on the cake is also the long weekend, with Monday being a holiday (Dusshera). Hence one can expect footfalls for Wanted increasing or at least remaining steady over the weekend.

Salman’s Wanted collects 75 lakh in Pak

WANTED, SALMAN: Boney Kapoor says Salman Khan has become the national craze in Pakistan.
Salman Khan’s Wanted has broken all records – not in India, but in Pakistan! Well, at least that’s what producer Boney Kapoor says.
A beaming Kapoor reveals, “Salman Khan has become the national craze in Pakistan and in the Gulf countries. Wanted has collected Rs 75 lakh in just 2 days in Pakistan and over Rs 20 lakh in six days in the Gulf countries.”
The producer added, “Distributors from Pakistan have been calling me up non-stop. They have been telling me how for the first time in multiplexes were running to full houses in the country because of the film. Even multiplex owners have been sending me congratulatory messages. Apparently, the people are giving the film a standing ovation after every show.”
And that’s not all. Boney Kapoor further said, “Girls and even boys are going mad over Salman’s bare chest. There’s a good number of repeat audience as well. The film is doing excellent business overseas as well. I am just waiting for the exact figures.”

There are two ways of looking at Wanted numbers:
1. Film Information
490 screens 20.66 cr.
Suppose Wanted released in 1000 screens. Remaining screen can be assumed to be single screens. They need 3 lakh per screen to reach 35 crore! If you look at smallest centers the collections are 50,000 to 1,00,00 [Take a look at Ghajini,OSO, SIK, RNBDJ numbers]. The Ideal average should be around 2 lakh /screen. That would result into 30 crore plus some more crores.
2. Trade Guide – If you assume DBH and wanted are reported from same cinemas (Delhi unreceived). The ratio is 1.65 in favor of Wanted. If BOI 18 crore is true then Wanted 29.7 crore! Taking into account that Wanted was released in smallest centres across India where DBH was not released, you need to add 2-3 crores to Wanted. The maximum reach would be 32-33 crore.

the interesting thing is there are only a handful of major centers that give you a gross upward of 1 crore. Just a bare handful. Then there is an equally small number that yields between 50 lakhs an one crore. Again a very small number that gives you 15-50 lakhs. A greater range for the 1-15 lakh range but not massive. But there are also many centers that yield far less than a lakh. So if a film is historic in a center that normally gives you a lakh, or in one that normally gives you 60k how many of such centers does one need to add up just to get to a crore!
Again the SR example is instructive. In Indore this supposedly historic Wanted just has 12 lakhs over SR! How extraordinary could it be?! And again this point needs to be stressed — the highest yielding single/double screens are all in major centers and are represented in those city grosses. Bombay for example shows a relatively low number despite all of this which shows how minimal multiplex participation is.

actually he stepped back from that once the numbers came out. these days he often reports the totals but didn’t with this one. Also he is quite ‘cool’ on multipexes. The one thing all commentary agrees on is the multiplexes and you can’t get to huge totals without them. Consider this, BOI would have you believe the film has made almost exactly as much as OSO. This beggars belief. OSO probably had 5-6 crores over this film just from major cities! And in week 1 OSO had very good numbers in smaller centers.

Jay,
Am fairly comfortable with your estimate. I think 36 is a reach. Too much of a reach. Media is going to town obviously as is its wont and will build up Sallu.
Which is OK by me. But, surely Salman has shaken things up for SRK and Akshay.

that’s certainly true and if akshay has some sense he’ll jump on the masala bandwagon as in fact I’ve been saying for ages he should.

Estimated weekend BO in the US for WYR – $163k
I think it is too low and final number may be higher.
“On the Bollywood circuit there was OK response of $163,000 for What’s Your Raashee? At 77 sites.”

Wanted is the best piece of action extravengaza (hope my spelling is correct 😉 ) to come out of bollywood since time immemorial..
for the first time in my life i saw such action movie on screen… in theater..
and SALMAN rocks.. move over akshay u cant have the title of action hero any more SHER aa chuka hai.. giddad ke bhagne ka samy bhi 😉
10 stars out of 5 as of now might increas when i write a review 😉
better than ghajini (yup thats big statement from aamir fan 🙂 )
just couldnt stop my excitement from sharing my views .. random thoughts coming shortly…

Not surprised DBH cacked and plopped out after the weekend. Also not surprised that Wanted had a strong opening. I’m amused though at some of the articles that have elaborated and exaggerated its box office though. I’m surprised that WYR got clobbered by the critics and has so far had a lukewarm box office take. I was never vastly excited for the movie, but I thought it would fare better that it has been thus far.
I never thought Gowariker was a proper fit for a movie like WYR. The movie being over 3 hours long was another downfall. There was no reason why WRY had to be so long winded. I indeed hope that Gowariker will get back to basic for his next Hindi movie. He has already said the movie will be shorter because of the genre so that is already a change in the right direction.

Adjusted the week 1 to 31-33Cr. It could be lower though. I don’t think it can be higher at all.
