    • I haven’t seen Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban, which turned out to be a mega hit. I believe it was the first tamil film to be shot extensively abroad.

I will be surprised if there was any outdoor shot featuring MGR in the 60’s and 70’s films. All his scenes were filmed inside the studios; except for USV and a few scenes from Anbe Vaa, which probably was shot in Simla. No way they could shoot his scenes outdoors in Tamilnad.

Incidentally, ‘Ayirathil Oruvan’ from the second photograph happened to be the first film starring MGR and Jayalalitha.

      • USV is a great deal of fun with MGR in a double role. And yeah it was lavishly made for its time at a number of East Asian sites, most notably Japan and HK. Interestingly it was a trend at the time to have thrillers or spy films with an East Asian angle. Dharam did a few of these in Hindi as well. Didn’t realize Aayirathil Oruvan was the first MGR/Jayalalitha film. On Anbe Vaa yeah those scenes are in Simla or Kashmir (don’t remember which one it is here).
