Koffee with Karan (Deepika and Sonam)

  1. Ranbir angry with Deepika, Sonam

Ranbir Kapoor might be a ladies’ man, but his ex-girlfriends, Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, have made some comments on KJo’s Koffee With Karan which have not gone down very well with the Kapoor lad.

Our source said, “The two girls who were said to be at loggerheads over Ranbir Kapoor till some time ago got along like a house on fire on Karan’s show.

Incidentally it seemed that both of them had an axe to grind against Ranbir Kapoor. Both the girls had one common talking point, which was Ranbir.

However, after watching the show, Ranbir is obviously not very happy and has been saying that both these girls nicked him on national television.

Incidentally, Deepika said that she would gift him a pack of condoms while Sonam said that he needed a better stylist. Both the girls also rated him very low on sex appeal and constantly hinted about him being unfaithful in a relationship.

Ranbir felt that the girls went overboard and they should not have spoken about him like that on a TV show.” Ranbir has been linked to Sonam since Saawariya days; his relationship with Deepika ended on a less palatable note with her accusing him of infidelity.

The source further said, “Ranbir is shooting for Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar in Delhi and his displeasure was very evident on the sets of the film. It did make for a fun watch, but it has definitely irked Ranbir.” Careful with the girls, RK. Manicured claws hurt.

PS: Strangely blames host Karan Johar for instigating them

The Koffee With Karan episode featuring Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor which aired last Sunday is threatening to spoil the relations between the Kapoors and the host Karan Johar.

The two actresses, who have both been linked to Ranbir Kapoor, took potshots at the actor throughout the show (see box) and this has angered his parents and extended family like his aunt Rima Jain.

    What Sonam said
Declared Ranbir was unsexy, and that she had seen it all during the shooting of Saawariya when he dropped the towel for the infamous scene, and wasn’t interested anymore. She also ridiculed his fashion sense. And let Deepika know that she found it admirable that Deepika held on to Kapoor for so long. Ending by saying that Ranbir badly needed a stylist and that he is a terrible boyfriend and he can never stay faithful.

    What Deepika said
When KJo asked her what she’d like to give Ranbir Kapoor, she said: a box of condoms. Hinting at his over-active libido or an unfortunate incident with one of his girlfriends? Your guess is as good as ours. When asked to rate him in sex appeal, the former girlfriend put him last on her list. She also said that that if she woke up as RK someday, she’d go back to sleep. She also made digs at him for cheating on her. The piece de resistance was when she revealed that once, when RK was at KJO’s house, her ex was offered a glass of juice and a silk robe by his maid.

Some people who saw the episode felt the two actresses had gone overboard with their opinion on Ranbir. Naturally RK’s parents are upset. Rima and Neetu are currently on a holiday in New York and haven’t seen the show but they got calls from “well-wishers” from India who informed them about the fun poked at the Kapoor lad.

An industry source reveals, “Neetu was so mad when she heard what the two actresses had said she called up Karan and fired him for allowing that kind of talk on the show.” Rishi Kapoor makes no bones about hiding his hurt and anger.

Although he claims he hasn’t seen the show, he admits, “We definitely feel cheated and hurt. My wife and sister are in New York and they were very upset when they heard about the show. Neetu was very hurt and upset and she spoke to Karan about it. We didn’t expect this from him because Karan happens to be a close friend but he instigated both the girls to say all those things!”

A disturbed Rishi continues, “We’ve done so much for Karan… We have gone twice on his show. We even gave bytes for the show featuring Imran and Ranbir out of pure love for Karan.

In return, what does he do? Provoke guests on his show to get better TRPs? There’s no respect for relationships. Neetu and I go on his shows out of love for him. He gets paid for the show while we do it for love and affection. Karan shouldn’t do this to us or all the Kapoors will severe ties with him and not work with him.”

When pointed out that it wasn’t the host but Deepika and Sonam who poked fun at his laadla, Papa Kapoor says, “Well to put things in the right perspective, all I can say is that with both the girls it is a case of sour grapes. I have known Sonam’s father Anil for years.

All I will say to the girls is: in stead of doing all this concentrate on your careers. Why do you run shows that have so much gossip? I have done Koffee With Karan earlier with Neetu, my brothers and sister; there was great camaraderie and laughter on our show. We didn’t run anyone down. I don’t think you should encourage people to wash dirty linen in public. You will never see Ranbir running anyone down.”

When asked if he’d tried to talk to Anil about Sonam’s comments, Rishi says, “What can I say to Anil? Everyone is family here and these girls are like my children. I don’t want to get into fights involving my son’s friends.

It just shows their (Deepika and Sonam) class. I would like to tell them to stop giggling all the time and instead grow up and behave maturely. They are there on the show because they are their father’s daughters and not because of their work! I would advise them to stop talking about their colleagues and running them down.”

    The Other Side
“Neetuji has not called me and I am unaware of any of this… spoke to Ranbir and he was totally cool and understands the nature and vibe of the show!! He is possibly the coolest guy I know… so he was totally fine!!”
    Karan Johar

  5. I don’t watch this show, but I read comments on another forum about the show with Ranbir and Imran, and most people were critical that Ranbir apparently “boasted” about the numerous relationships he had had, and that Rishi and Neetu in their video clips essentially said that he was a chip off the old block (Rishi) and they were proud of his playboy ways. I can’t say how true those comments are, since I don’t watch the show, but these present reactions by Rishi and Neetu seem totally silly and petty, and, dare I say, petty. If Deepika and Sonam are in films because of their fathers, why exactly is Ranbir in the industry? And why threaten Karan that none of them will work with him? (I think he’ll survive) Wow, I can see classlessness all right.

  6. @ sm– i have seen the Ranbir-Imran episode. Ranbir did admit to having had some relationships; Rishi did talk about his being ok with Ranbir doing whatever he wishes to while still young. I am not endorsing whatever Rishi said–that is his take. But Rishi is spot on about the Depika-Sonam Koffee show. The entire show was one silly bitchfest between two immature giggly girls–and a manipulative talk show host.

    • Well, I have now just finished watching this episode, thanks to these silly articles, and I honestly don’t see what there is for anyone to get worked up about. What “bitch fest”? All they said about Ranbir was that he is a great guy to have as a friend, but not as a boyfriend, and he is a very good actor with a great future. What is there to object in that? Karan was much more “bitchy” if you will, than either of them. But then he always is; that is the USP of this show. Fortunately both Deepika and Sonam refused to play along with this stupid games and did not say anything negative about anyone, except possibly Shobha De, and all they said about her was that she should not use the power of her pen for personal attacks. Sorry, but I don’t see anything to complain about in this episode, and I think Rishi and Neetu’s comments are way out of line, especially when they admit that they haven’t even seen the show!

I have great respect for Rishi Kapoor as an actor.

Rishi kapoor has a typical old male mentality. His son can go around with girls but god forbid if the girls strike back some comments. This is not Ranbir’s father’s Zamana. Zamana badal gaya hai. Girls today will respond back and will take things lying down. They feel they have been duped and taken for granted by Ranbir as one of his many flings. He himself has admitted with Imran that he goes around with many girls and screens his calls when various of his girlfriends call.

Other point is that he is threating Karan Johar as if that is going to hurt him. I think he has forgotten that we are not in the Raj Kapoor era. Kapoors do not have any clout nowadays. Also everyone know Karan’s show is all about gossip and posing questions on their

Also if your son is on the same show and mockingly kissing Imran then I would first talk to him. Ranbir himself was not to flattering in some of his comments. check his comments on how he screens his girlfriend’s call on Karan’s Johar. This is not your average next boy rather he is a playboy.

  12. I know I am in the minority here–but i have to state this again– IMHO, the whole deepika-sonam episode was silly, irritating, distasteful and cheap rather than witty. There a few stray moments of wit–like when Sonam spoke about silicone remains in an actors’ graveyard–something to that effect—but overall the show lacked any class whatsoever–not that Karan’s shows are very classy–not by a long shot–and yes, Ranbir-Imran kissing (2nd ep)was a poor joke; Rishi did speak about letting his son sow his wild oats while young—but that is not the point. Ranbir does come across as somebody with a little diary full of girl’s numbers–but he and Imran did not run down anyvbody the way these two brats did.

This whole 3rd Koffee episode centered around Deepika Sonam making mincemeat of a boyfriend-friend who they feel needed a comeuppance; but doing it publicly on a talkshow, making it the whole point of the show? Come on–Rishi-Neetu had a right to feel offended–though I’m sure Ranbir can fight his own battles; yet the parents have every right to express their opinion on a bad bad show.

In fact Ranbir’s sister has tried to do some damage control, trying to make up possibly for her father’s enthusistic critisicm–

I think that part about describing how he shielded his Telephone numbers of various girls was really a typical MALE ***XX*** . ….And *that* is not wrong, very acceptable, that women are being treated in this manner by him ON TELEVISION…BUT when women do what *they* can, its bitchy etc etc.

IS IT BECAUSE WE DON’T KNOW THESE WOMEN???!!! BECAUSE THEY ARE NAMELESS AND FACELESS??

I undersatnd his parents getting angry (though they should have educated him better and taught him to treat others (Women in this case) with respect, just as one thinks Sonam should, but what I don’t understand is others trying to protect the brat. And there’s further proof — Neetu Singh had to call the police one night when Rishi Kapoor was about to (or actually did) physically assault her under intoxication. Raj Kapoor himself was a perv. There shouldn’t be a big element of surprise in the way Ranbir Kapoor’s turned up…

Well said. This idea of the Kapoors being some revered family is ridiculous. Raj Kapoor certainly didn’t sound like a particularly respectable guy.

I was reading an interview of Lata where she was acknowledging that he was a great filmmaker with phenomenal musical sense, but that on a personal level there was no connection. She was particularly miffed at being coaxed into sing Main Kya Karoon Raam Mujhe Budha Mil Gaya to try and cure Raj of his inability to ‘perform’ in Sangam.

I’ve never liked Rishi’s attitude, partcularly when he starts lecturing about how great his entire clan is.

And now the girls have taking their own pound of flesh it’s suddenly a problem??? The hypocrisy and double standard is mind boggling. Rishi K. can go cry me a freaking river. He’s hardly the bastion of good manners and class and it’s much more than the pot calling the kettle black the way he’s talking about these two women.

Personal behavior for me has never affected my judgment of any artist. I believe the ‘art’ *should* be separated from the artist otherwise there’d be nothing to appreciate!

Regarding calling out the Kapoors for their chauvinism, that’s a personal call and although I always prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt, there are too many examples to NOT draw the line at some point.

People *still* point out Salman Khan’s unruly behavior towards the women in his life. Why should it be different with the Kapoors? It’s a fact that Neetu Singh had to call the police one night when Rishi went out of control. You can dig the news item up yourself. Condoning this kind of behavior isn’t my cup of tea…

As far as I’m concerned they are all brats, so why just pick on the two girls.

When Ranbir ‘boasted’ of his ‘several’ phone numbers, and later the girls’ remarks, I thought, Deepika’s number must have been one of those.

Anyway, at the time of the press conference I was barely getting into Bollywood, so had no clue who any of these people were, and so my primary reaction was, why didn’t he just turn his phone off?

For one thing, this is primarily a film blog (though other issues are also discussed from time to time), so it makes sense for people to discuss film related topics. There was one mention of the Barkha Dutt and Vir Sanghvi tapes on some other thread. But precisely because I couldn’t remember where it was mentioned (and because it was way off topic there), I couldn’t go back and comment on it.

A second major point is that people are reacting to published articles about this show. Now how many articles have been published on the tapes? There is your distortion, if you want to look for it. There is plenty of discussion elsewhere on the net. I myself became aware of the issue via Twitter.

This show has always been about either fomenting discord between the guests on the show, or between the guests and people who are not on the show; in the first season it was largely about a small group of Karan’s friends coming on the show and making fun of everyone in the industry in a very cliquish way. None of those who were insulted in the previous two seasons made such an exhibition as the Kapoors are now doing. It’s not as if anyone can be surprised about the nature of the show’s content. 20. They made so much of the show about Ranbir. And karan needs to stop w/ his “khan of all seasons” question.

I don’t think they said anything too offensive about Ranbir for it to create so much hoopla. Both people have a right to talk about what happened in a relationship, so nothing wrong w/ what deepika is saying. I actually find the directness better than hinting and insinuating things. That was the problem for me, both the actresses hinting and insinuating things…either say what you’re thinking or don’t but stop all the dropping clues and hinting towards things. Deepika does carry herself better than Sonam. Deepika looked poised and under control most of the time.

Sonam K. seems to be channeling paris hilton. Sonam is kind of annoying, but it’s good to see her take a firm stand on not commenting on her personal life. She also seems to be taking this fashion icon thing too seriously, she needs to concentrate on acting instead.

Why is there so much talk about rabir’s towel dance? Did it have full nudity or something? I would assume he had shorts on under the towel, so why did he get so much crap for it? It’s no worse than salman khan humping a towel in his song and all hsi live performances or john abraham in dostana pulling his shorts down.

    Like

    • At least in the international release, Ranbir drops his towel at the end of the song, with his back to the camera, so that we see his bare butt. Sonam was implying that, since she was on the set, and out of the shot, she saw him in full frontal nudity, which was a surprise to me.

I always thought that they had that shot in there to avoid the film getting a “G” rating in the U.S., which is box officer poison for anything but a film aimed at kids under five.

its not surprising that the people made fun of are usually srk’s competitors or foes OR are usually not big-shots or are not in a positiion of strkingback.

Ayan Mukerjee, of Wake Up Sid fame, is in a bit of a fix. He has been asked to choose between his best friend Ranbir Kapoor and mentor Karan Johar.

Last week the Wake Up Sid director Ayan Mukerjee got a jolting wake-up call from his best-friend Ranbir Kapoor’s father Rishi Kapoor.

Ayan was all set to direct Ranbir for the second time for Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The two buddies, Ayan and Ranbir, were happily working on a second script that would take them beyond Wake Up Sid.

The script had been locked in and the second Ranbir-Ayan collaboration for Karan Johar was to go on the floors in early 2011.

    Rishi Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor

Then the fall-out between Rishi Kapoor and Karan Johar over remarks on Ranbir on Karan Koffee With Karan happened.

Now Ranbir and Ayan are caught in the crossfire. Rishi Kapoor called Ayan over and gave him an ultimatum. Ayan would have to choose between working with either Ranbir Kapoor or Karan Johar. A frightening choice for the painfully young director since he is equally close to both Ranbir and Karan and can’t think of making a film in the absence of either.

Rishi, still seething about Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s comments on Ranbir on Koffee With Karan, confirms that he has indeed given Ayan the dreadful ultimatum. Says Rishi, “Ayan came over to discuss the matter with me.

I clearly told him neither me nor Ranbir will work for any Dharma production. If Ayan still chooses to work with my son I’ve offered to get him another producer to produce his second film.”

This turn of events has greatly distressed both Ayan and Ranbir. Mutual friends are trying their utmost to bring about a rapprochement between the two families and end the deadlock over Ayan’s film, as well as debutant director Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath to be produced by Karan Johar, where Rishi is to play a pivotal part.

Say a source, “Neither Rishi nor Karan is the kind to hold grudges for too long. The cold war is bound to end. In the meanwhile Ayan and Ranbir are squirming in the crossfire.”

Says Rishi, “We Kapoors are small people. Who are we to pick fights and have cold wars? Like Ranbir Karan apna hi bachcha hai. We’re all fond of him. But as far as I am concerned none of us Kapoors will work in a Dharma Production.”

      • I guess Rishi really means “we Kapoors are small minded people.”

Rishi is just embarrassing himself with his petty behavior and making Ranbir look like a wuss.

Ranbir’s success has gone to Rishi’s head.

    • This all sounds made up or it could be created by some pr firm. If it’s true then Rishi needs to get a life, he’s blowing it out of proportion. And before ranbir, how many kapoors did kjo even want in his movies (except for kareena, but she wouldn’t blacklist dharma prod). Rishi k. is using ranbir’s popularity to get back into the limelight. If I were the director, i would not work w/ rabir under these threats and ultimatums.

Rishi Kapoor is making a fool of himself, just like he did in the 90’s when he was romancing those young chicks whilst wearing those hideous jumpers that couldn’t hide his obesity.

A lot of people seem to have scores to settle with Rishi. I think he is within his rights as a parent to retaliate. Inspite of their shortcomings and weaknesses, Kapoors cannot be denied the right to stand up for themselves or their kids. Am not sure why his ‘cool’ cardigans seem to irk some.

LOL Rajen, in fact in the interview( special features) for Do dooni Chaar he says exactly that- I am used to wearing the sweaters from switzerland and for this movie they bought sweaters from the footpath of lajpat nagar market in Delhi. Those sweater are in fact very very typical Delhi- Punjab- U.P . ‘s lower middle class wear.
I also noticed a plastic Shaving Closet, which at one time was very popular. overall freat detailing in that movie.

      • Incidentally Do Dooni Char is the directorial debut of Habib Faisal (who also wrote it), the writer of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Taram Pum (and a relative of my cousin’s husband, although I’ve never met him)… It was not released in the cinema in NYC but I recently caught it on disc, this was one of the best Hindi films of the year IMO…bahut mazaa aaya…

“in the first season it was largely about a small group of Karan’s friends coming on the show and making fun of everyone in the industry in a very cliquish way. None of those who were insulted in the previous two seasons made such an exhibition as the Kapoors are now doing. ”
    Agree there.
its not surprising that the people made fun of are usually srk’s competitors or foes OR are usually not big-shots or are not in a positiion of strkingback.
if the same program came an year or two ago, im sure the kapoors would have taken it “sportingly”, but now rishi feels securer enuf (due to ranbirs career graph) to strike back. Plus karans banner is not doing gr8 anyways.
About deepika though, i do agree wiht rishi that its a case of “sour grapes”.
the way she left mihir pandya and after ranbir is trying to live life “kingsize—–the kingfisher way” smacks of opportunism. INfact ranbir has been quite dignified in public and has never gossiped about his ex-es. He has that prerogative but that doesnt mean that kjo should openly and mischievously dissect his inner impulses. I think kjo should dedicate an entire season to try annd explore why he still remans a fortyish year old (frustrated) virgin getting cheap school boyish kicks out of easy targets….

  31. Ayan dumps KJo for Ranbir

After Rishi Kapoor’s ultimatum, Wake Up Sid whiz kid, Ayan Mukerji takes his next project with Ranbir to Studio 18

It is an industry notorious for its fickle relationships. Not long ago, Ayan Mukerji, whose debut feature, Wake Up Sid, was produced by Karan Johar. In a line-up of directors belonging to Dharma Productions, Ayan Mukerji even took the trouble to don a black suit and stand among his comrades from the Dharma camp.

In a campy intrigue indeed this allegiance seems to have gone sour.

After the rather public fallout between Rishi Kapoor and KJo thanks to the jabs that ex-lovers Deepika and Sonam made about Ranbir whilst fighting for that hamper on KJo’s talk show Ayan Mukerji was caught in the cross-fire. Either choose Karan or Ranbir, Rishi Kapoor had told him (Mumbai Mirror, Nov 30 edition).

Ayan Mukerji with Ranbir Kapoor (yogen shah)

Well, Ayan, it seems, has chosen Ranbir over Karan, something that is causing KJo a lot of heartburn. A top source from Bollywood told this paper last evening, “Ayan aur Karan ka jhagda bahut badh gaya hai.

Ayan has spoken to some big officials at Studio 18 and pitched his project asking them if they would like to produce his film. Studio 18 has welcomed him. Talks are on. Let’s see what happens.”

Another source, who is from Ayan’s neighbourhood, says, “We knew Ayan will stick with Ranbir. He can always move out from Dharma Productions and yet continue to make films.” Ayan hasn’t yet confirmed that Ranbir will star in this film. “But that is obvious. Ayan is simply holding his cards close to his chest. He wants his second big break very soon. Wake Up Sid (which starred Ranbir) is over and gone.

Even if he doesn’t cast Ranbir in his film for Studio 18, the fact remains that there is very strong friction between Karan and him at this moment. Or else why would he have gone to Studio 18 when his second film was going to be with none other than Dharma Productions?”

Crossing swords with KJo though is no easy matter. We know how tough it has been for Soham Shah (of Kaal fame) to survive in Bollywood after he parted ways with his mentor. Ditto for Nikhil Advani, who hasn’t set the cash registers ringing either after he had a spat with Karan after Kal Ho Naa Ho.

So this could be difficult for Mukerji, even though he can boast of some Bollywood pedigree himself. His sister Sunita is married to Ashutosh Gowariker; his cousins are Kajol and Rani Mukerji; he retains close connections with the Farhan Akhtar camp; from the latter, stylist Arjun Bhasin took much care to groom him in his teens for his debut in tinsel town, from the clothing to the hair gel.

Friends even lovingly began referring to him as a “mini-Arjun” during this period.

“Ayan need not worry. He has Ranbir on his side,” said the source.

As we were going into print, a friend of Ayan’s called us up to say that Ayan’s second film will be for Dharma Productions and no one else. However our source confirmed that “Ayan has gone to Studio 18.” Maybe KJo and his erstwhile protege can sort this out over a cup of coffee before things get too bitter.

  33. ‘After Koffee, it got awkward with Deepika’
By: The Hitlist Team Date: 2011-05-04 Place: Mumbai

Ranbir Kapoor, who features on the cover of this month’s GQ, has spoken about Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor. Here’s an extract from the accompanying interview… On being a womaniser: “Right now it’s like I’m being linked left, right and centre. I open the paper and I’m actually dreading it sometimes. Jesus Christ, you know? I’m 28 years old, I work hard, I’m fairly successful at my job and I’m attracted to women.”

On Deepika: “With Deepika it was just kind of strange, because after she gave certain interviews post our break-up or that episode on Koffee With Karan, it got really awkward. Deepika must be having some angst against me, which she probably took out through this interview. But I still respect her, I still like her, I still feel she’s a really nice girl.”

On Sonam: “I really have nothing to say about because she was just my co-star and I think she said a few things which she really didn’t need to.” On relationships: “I don’t believe in casual relationships. I don’t believe in one-night stands. But I’m not really looking to date someone.

  35. I find Deepika’s behavior on the show rather puzzling. She claims that Ranbir cheated on her but is now attending his birthday party, paying him compliments in interviews and has signed a film with him. No self-respecting woman who has been subjected to serial cheating will have anything to do with her ex for professional leverage. Just look at Aishwarya or Bipasha or Vidya. They don’t even like mentioning their exs , let alone be friendly after they have been treated poorly. This means Deepika has either lied about things or she has no self-respect and is willing to compromise to achieve success. Let us not forget she has had a string of flops in 2010 and 2011.
