Quentin Tarantino is moving ahead with his plans to make a Western, entitled ‘Django Unchained’. Deadline.com reports that Tarantino finished the script late last week. The website’s Mike Fleming said: “While Tarantino has spoken about doing a variation of the Western genre he called a ‘Southern’, I’m told he has actually written a spaghetti Western, that stylised and violent brand of films popularised by Sergio Leone and a few other directors in the 1960s.
“Tarantino will put his stamp on one of his favourite genres same as he did when he took on the war mission movie with ‘Inglourious Basterds’.”
It is reported that casting will begin shortly, with the film going into production later this

Am fascinated by the Tarantino brand of cinema.. Yet to check out a QT film in a theatre.. Am sure it would be a scintillating experience!
Only if he could tone down the violence a little bit.. But its useless to expect that from his films.. !!

“That initial sequence in Inglorious Basterds though seems to me to be a better ‘homage’ on Tarantino’s part than anything else he’s attempted. The most obvious examples are the Kill Bill movies. But here from Lady Snowblood to Leone the ‘originals’ already seem to be a bit like Tarantino avant la lettre! In other words the sense of a postscript to an entire genre that is also ultimately comic because it’s reflexively ironic is a move already present in those older works. To ‘spoof’ Lady Snowblood or Leone seems beside the point. To look at it yet another way the older films are sort of Desai attempts, essentially comedies but which nonetheless take their ‘epic’ gestures very seriously. Tarantino though wants to deconstruct the latter as well and in some ways misses the encounter.”

Hmmm.. haven’t seen much of international cinema.. maybe not even 1/20th of what you’ve seen Satyam. So dont know about most of the films he gets his inspirations from. But this guy has a wild fan following among film geeks, all over the world.
Incidentally, the conversations/dialogues in his films are worth the price of the ticket

Loving this, Have always been a fan of Spaghetti western’s, I always thought of The Good, The Bad & The ugly as the American Sholay (as in the best film made in Hollywood) Which is my opinion only. There are many other great films made by Sergio Leone, This one stands out for me. However, Loved his Once Upon a Time in the west & Once upon a time in America, Both Legendary films. (There are many references in sholay from OUATIW, ex – Gabbar Killing that little kid, lots of tune from its background score. Cant wiat for this one though. IT will be treat to watch.

OT:
Watched a famous ‘disturbing’ Japanese film named Audition. Pretty much lives up to the Japanese brand of sadistic violence (like the director’s other Ichi The Killer) – so we have heads being chopped off, fingers missing, tongues sliced at al.
I was expecting a better film though. Loved the subtlety with which Takashi Miike directed it (yes, say this despite the film getting hyper-violent in the closing portions) but left me slightly underwhelmed.
Curious to check out I saw the Devil now.

tony, i have to say that i am really pleased with ur choice of films. and seems u have been upto watching the ‘other’ cinema.i think i will be keeping a track of the films u have seen so that i also watch them and improve my taste.have hardly seen any japanese film(apart from sum animes and few ken watanabe starrers).btw, i always liked ‘kaun’ a lot and tried to find sum notes/analysis on the film bit couldn’t.now that i know u liked the film. why don’t u write sumthing on it(i would luv to read it)

but i havent seen much South Asian cinema either. I checked out Akira the other day and couldn’t take in the gizmos-gadgets laden storyline. Had no option but to stop watching after a while. I’d rather watch Spirited Away again.
You can go ahead and watch Audition if you can handle grisly graphic violence. I had to prepare myself for the worst before watching this, since the film consistently features in the ‘Most controversial films ever’ / disgusting films ever list. Have heard many Indian films that claim they aren’t ‘for the faint hearted’. But this one truly isn’t. The last 20 minutes were blood curdling
But like I said, the film tries something beyond being a psychological thriller. There’s an emotional connect it aims for, with the viewers. Miike succeeds partially though. didnt take it seriously after it finished

Quentin Tarantino has revealed the synopsis for his much discussed forthcoming film Django Unchained, billed as a western set in the deep south in the period just prior to the American civil war.
The plot rundown expands on the backstory revealed in numerous leaks from bloggers claiming to have read Tarantino’s screenplay last year, most of whom gave a positive verdict. It confirms that the film will begin with German-born bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) freeing the title character and helping to train him in combat so that he can return to the plantation where his wife is incarcerated in the hope of liberating her.
The synopsis reads: “Set in the South two years before the Civil War, Django Unchained stars Academy award-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Academy award-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The unorthodox Schultz acquires Django with a promise to free him upon the capture of the Brittles – dead or alive.
“Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Django Unchained began filming in California in January before shifting to Wyoming and Louisiana. The cast also features Don Johnson as another plantation owner, Spencer “Big Daddy” Bennett, The Wire’s Michael K Williams, Walton Goggins of the TV series Justified and rapper RZA. The film’s title is a riff on the 1966 Sergio Corbucci spaghetti western Django, though it is not known how much of the storyline will be borrowed from its predecessor.

Have a feeling Di Caprio might win his first Best Supporting Actor Academy with this one. A little too early to say that though.
The pics and the characters appear to be cartoonish and OTT but that’s a Tarantino staple, so expected!

Checked out Ingmar Bergmen’s Persona. Not as good as I’d expected it to be though it’s wonderful to see the way he plays with visual imagery. Would still prefer Eraserhead to this one in terms of ‘surreal filmmaking’

I didn’t think the book was poor or anything but it also contained the kind of narrative hoodwinking that American movies love these days. It’s no wonder why Shyamalan was attached at one point!

You’re quite right.. but there’s perhaps something more here as well. This whole idea which runs from the Matrix through Usual Suspects to Shyamalan and now to Bollywood as well essentially features that moment where the narrative is turned inside out (of course the Matrix makes this explicit early on). It could be the Salt like scenario where one is either the killer one is looking for or with the additional twist that in a second inversion it is actually the ‘system’ that is responsible and the looked-for-killer has always been ‘innocent’. Or it could be a film which depends on its entire world becoming questionable by the end (Usual Suspects) or one where with a shift in perspective even though everything remains the same everything has really changed (Sixth Sense). In India we’ve had BM and now Kahani (of course there was the Argentinian Nine Queens that foreshadowed BM). But you’re quite right that all of this seems boring by now. I think though that perhaps there is a fantasy element involved here. Perhaps our consumerist hyper-reality is so claustrophobic for us that we wish to escape it from time to time. Except that we cannot. And hence these films stage that fantasy. With the Matrix you can imagine that New Age deeper level to things. Your life and world is just a video game! And in these other films whatever you thought was real turns out to be not so or so radically re-perspectivized that it might as well be something else. Perhaps Midnight in Paris completes this movement by suggesting that all of this is just another form of nostalgia. We really want to escape ‘back to the future’!

Well-said. Hindi cinema is probably in the infancy stage of experimenting with this ‘mind-boggling’ idea but Hollywood has supposedly exhausted this with Shutter Island. If not executed properly or backed with substantial reasoning, the fil might end up looking ridiculous.
I’s still give Sujoy Ghosh credit for a gripping film but the climax sort of diluted the impact. Cant blame the director entirely though. The audience needed something of that sort.

satyam, actually yann martel’s next novel “beatrice and virgil”(look at the 2 names) is a better book than “life of pi”. also ang lee’s hulk was better than the other film where edward norton played the same character.anyway if i manage time from my posting, it will be ‘avengers’ tomorrow

Samuel L. Jackson finds it “fun” and “artistically satisfying” working with Quentin Tarantino on ‘Django Unchained’.
The ‘Avengers Assemble’ star is delighted to be teaming up with the director again for the star-studded drama movie – which features Sacha Baron Cohen, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kurt Russell, Kerry Washington and Jamie Foxx – and he revealed the film set is “full of fun, joy and laughter”.
He said: “It’s really great to be back on Tarantino’s set. As usual it’s full of fun, joy and laughter. It’s as fun and artistically satisfying as it’s ever been.
“He is still doing his weekly film screenings of interesting and bizarre movies, last week we saw ‘The Raid’ which was an awesome movie.”
Samuel currently stars as Nick Fury in ‘Avengers Assemble’, and the 63-year-old actor was full of praise for the film’s director Joss Whedon for fitting all of the superhero characters – including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Captain America (Chris Evans) – together in one motion picture.
Speaking in an interview with Collider.com, he added: “Talking to Joss, it was wonderful. I knew what his pedigree was and all the other stuff about him and what his visions for the film were.
“When you get in that particular place and you see the enormity of what all that is you’ve got to look at the leader of that ship and see all the stormy waters around and see how he’s standing on the bow of that ship and Joss pretty much had it covered the whole time, we trusted him.”

Ok, something here for Tarantino and Django fans. It’s a trailer of a film which I have seen and quite liked- “Sukiyaki Western Django
It’s a 2007 Japanese film which had Tarantino in a cameo and has influenced Tarantino’s own Django Unhained. The film is inspired from Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy” and Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo”- directed by takashi Miike
Plot-Inspired by the historical rivalry between the Genji and Heike clans, which ushered in the era of samurai dominance in Japanese history, Sukiyaki Western Django is set “a few hundred years after the Genpei War”. The Genji and Heike gangs face off in a town named “Yuta” in “Nevata”, when a deadly gunman comes into town to help a prostitute get revenge on the warring gangs. The film contains numerous references both to the historical Genpei War and to Wars of the Roses, as well as the films Yojimbo and Django.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Kurt Russell are no longer appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Django Unchained, according to US reports.
Baron Cohen had been due to make his debut for the Pulp Fiction director in his much-hyped 19th-century Deep South-set follow up to Inglourious Basterds, cameoing in the role of Scotty Harmony, a gambler who buys the title character’s enslaved wife as a companion. However, the British comic has had to pass due to commitments for the press tour of his new film The Dictator.
Russell, who starred in Tarantino’s Death Proof, was due to play a villain named Ace Woody who trains slaves to fight each other for public amusement. Much of Django Unchained takes place at a plantation named Candyland, where owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio) presides over a horrors how of racist sadism.
Russell’s departure has led to speculation in the blogosphere that the role is something of a poisoned chalice as the same part was originally due to be played by Kevin Costner, who also quit. The latest switch is, however, good news for fans of Justified’s Walton Goggins, whose role is to be expanded to include Woody’s lines.
Tarantino confirmed last month that Django Unchained begins with German-born bounty hunter Dr King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) freeing Jamie Foxx’s title character and helping to train him in combat so that he can return to the plantation where his wife is incarcerated in the hope of liberating her. The film is inspired by the spaghetti western subgenre and takes its name from Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 film Django, though it is not known how much of the storyline will be borrowed from its predecessor. Django Unchained, which is still filming in New Orleans, is due out on Christmas Day in the US and 18 January in the UK.
