  1. Diwali Clashes: The Screen Count Factor

    Monday 12th November 2012 11.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

There has been a major controversy this year regarding the availability of screens but this has been the case nearly every year where one film gets the edge in terms of screens.

The possible difference this year being they were booked well in advance by Jab Tak Hai Jaan distributors which fuelled the controversy while in the past bookings were made closer to release time. The other important factors being much wider releases today and the number of screens gaining more importance as business is all about the first week. It is important to get the screens whether you get them 3 months prior to release or 6 months, its a must to have them.

Below is a look at recent Diwali clashes and the part that screen count played in them and as can be seen one film always held the edge but probably never to the extent seen this Diwali.

    2010

    Golmaal 3 – 1700 screens

    Action Replayy – 1400 screens

Golmaal 3 had more screens and much a better chain than Action Replayy and initially it was a one horse race as Golmaal 3 had more capacity. Action Replayy crashed after Diwali period so for Golmaal 3 it was like a solo release as it got the screens requied and the competition crashed very quickly.

    2009

    Blue – 1500 screens

All The Best – 1300 screens

Blue had more screens and a better chain which reflected in opening collections. It was another matter that Blue crashed after the holiday period and All the Best picked up and started collecting more than Blue from the day five onwards. Still All The Best was a hit film in terms of content and the only reason it did not the hit business it deserved was due to the fact that it got such a low initial due to clash.

    2008

    Golmaal Returns – 1250 screens

    Fashion – 750 screens

Fashion being a niche film and not needing single screens meant the screens were irrelevant in this clash though the business of Fashion was hurt as audiences preferred Golmaal Returns.

    2007

Om Shanti Om – 1300 screens

    Saawariya – 900 screens

This is as close as we get to the Diwali clash this year where Om Shanti Om took most of the high collecting single screens available and was a one horse race initially and unlike The Blue/All The Best scenario where the big opener crashed, here it was Saawariya that crashed.

    2006

    Don – 825 screens

    Jaan-E-Mann – 700 screens

As the digital revolution was in its initial stages it was a fairer situation as distributors themselves were wary of going deep into interiors as extra prints may not recover the print cost so basically two films releasing on same day did not have a screen problem. Don 2 had extra screens as being a Shahrukh Khan starrer, multiplexes gave it more screen time and the extra single screens it got was due to the fact it was action film. Jaan-E-Mann distributors could have easily released on more single screens but obviously distributors at the time preferred better occupancies at single screens as higher occupancy meant higher share.

All the clashes prior like 2005 (Garam Masala, Kyonki, Shaadi No1), 2004 (Veer Zaara, Aitraaz, Mughal-E-Azam, Naach) and before had little screen issues as there were enough to go around due to smaller releases.

We have come from a 525 screen release for Veer Zaara in 2004 to a 3300 screen release in the form of Ek Tha Tiger in 2012 as the digital revolution gained momentum especially over the last 2 years so it is inevitable that one film will come off worse in a clash especially as business is all about first week so every big film will like to have those 3000 screens in week one to capitalise but its impossible with a clash that both films get the screens required.

Son Of Sardaar has been hurt with the release this year and even though Jab Tak Hai Jaan has got the single screens it would have liked its business in multiplexes has been curtailed due to the clash. At the end of the day both films may emerge hits or even super hits but they will stay below the potential they could have achieved otherwise. Even if one does the implausible and goes to 250 crore it will still mean more was out there with the perfect release from day one which likes of Ek Tha Tiger, Ra.On, Bodyguard etc got.

  2. Diwali Releases Advance Report: Jab Tak Hai Jaan Leads

    Monday 12th November 2012 10.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Jab Tak Hai Jaan leads in the advance bookings over Son Of Sardaar. It was always going to lead in terms of number of tickets sold before release simply because there are far more tickets available due to much wider release. But in terms of percentage of tickets sold at a theatre it is leading almost across the board.

The gap is less in the North with some multiplexes on par while Jab Tak Hai Jaan having 5-10% lead in others but in places like Hyderabad and Pune there is a big difference with Jab Tak Hai Jaan leading by a margin.

The biggest problem for Son Of Sardaar is that in centres where it would have given Jab Tak Hai Jaan a run for its money it does not have the screens as Jab Tak Hai Jaan has cornered 90% of the big collecting single screens in Delhi city, UP, Rajasthan and CI. The battle is likely to be closest in East Punjab as single screens have a low contribution in the circuit but even here as there are a lot of premium multiplexes so Jab Tak Hain Jaan should come out ahead but with a smaller gap than the rest of India.

Still both films are looking at a strong opening though the first day will be up and down due to Diwali festivities but on day two both films will go to capacity houses or near capacity houses.

  3. At the Box Office, It’s a James Bond Weekend
    By BROOKS BARNES
Daniel Craig as James Bond in Francois Duhamel/Columbia Pictures and Metro Goldwyn Mayer Daniel Craig as James Bond in “Skyfall.”

LOS ANGELES — The 50-year-old James Bond movie franchise — a survivor of Austin Powers parodies, egregious product placement, Jason Bourne, polyester and Denise Richards in the role of a nuclear physicist — just delivered its best opening-weekend results ever.

“Skyfall” took in an estimated $87.8 million over the weekend in North American theaters, easily enough for No. 1 and a new high for Ian Fleming’s long-in-the-tooth superspy — even when adjusting for inflation, according to Hollywood.com, which compiles box office data. (“Skyfall” did have the advantage of playing in 3,505 theaters.)

“Skyfall,” which cost Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Sony Pictures Entertainment about $200 million to make, has taken in an additional $428 million overseas, where Sony has distribution rights. The Imax sneak-peek showings in North America chipped in $2.2 million more.

“Part of it is movie magic — the team here knocked it out of the park — and part of it is franchise DNA,” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution. “From the inception of Bond until now, most men fantasize about being him and most women fantasize about dating him.”

The “Skyfall” results are also a stark reminder for Hollywood, ever in search of blockbusters, that nothing beats old-fashioned storytelling and filmmaking. “Skyfall” earned stellar reviews — on par with Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-contending “Lincoln,” according to RottenTomatoes.com — by delivering a coherent plot, bringing back classic characters, embracing 007’s historically playful tone and eschewing computerized effects in favor of live-action shoots.

In many ways, “Skyfall” listened to Bond fans, many of whom were upset with the 2008 “Quantum of Solace. Perhaps feeling pressure from the younger Jason Bourne spy series, “Quantum of Solace” stripped out much of the Bond quirk. Audiences gave “Skyfall” an A score in exit polls.

Starring Daniel Craig in his third outing as 007 and Javier Bardem as a throwback villain, “Skyfall” was directed by Sam Mendes from a script by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan.

“Bond has a resonance that keeps him cool, and Sam Mendes clearly paid particular attention to that,” said Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Filmed Entertainment.

That “Skyfall” made it to screens at all is something of a Hollywood miracle. The film was delayed due to lengthy financial troubles at MGM that resulted in bankruptcy. Sony helped save the day, agreeing to co-finance and distribute the thriller for a continued stake in the series. MGM and its producing partner, EON Productions, own roughly 75 percent of “Skyfall,” with Sony holding the remaining 25 percent.

The studios delivered a marketing campaign that included Mr. Craig’s much-discussed stunt at the London Olympics, supposedly parachuting into the opening ceremony with Queen Elizabeth II in his arms. For Sony’s marketing wizards, “Skyfall” is their 9th No. 1 release of 2012.

Can they make “Skyfall” the biggest Bond of all time in America? It will be difficult: “Thunderball” (1965) holds that rank, taking in $508.2 million in North America, after adjusting for inflation, according to Hollywood.com.

For the weekend, “Wreck-It Ralph” (Walt Disney Studios) was second, selling an estimated $33.1 million in tickets, for a two-week total of $93.7 million. Two well-reviewed dramas were third and fourth: “Flight” (Paramount Pictures) took in about $15.1 million, for a two-week total of $47.8 million, and “Argo” (Warner Brothers) grossed $6.7 million, lifting its five-week total to an estimated $87.1 million.

“Taken 2” (Fox) chugged along in fifth place, with about $4 million, for a six-week total of $131.3 million.

Also notable was “Lincoln,” which arrived in only 11 theaters as a buzz-building technique — perhaps the smallest initial release ever for one of Mr. Spielberg’s films — and took in $900,000.

  4. Son Of Sardaar
By Taran Adarsh, 12 Nov 2012, 16:49 hrs IST

S.S. Rajamouli, the creative genius, holds the enviable record of delivering stupendous Blockbusters in a row. His films, consequently, have been remade in various Indian languages… the Hindi film industry has woken up to his brilliance as well. VIKRAMARKUDU was remade as ROWDY RATHORE, EEGA was dubbed in Hindi as MAKKHI and now, Rajamouli’s MARYADA RAMANNA gets a Hindi avatar — SON OF SARDAAR — after being remade in Kannada and Bengali languages. MARYADA RAMANNA, in turn, displayed a striking similarity to the 1923 Hollywood silent film OUR HOSPITALITY.

  5. Ajay Devgn convincingly plays son-of-the-soil with power, playfulness and colorful pagdis in every scene. He switches from comedy, action and romance flippantly, impressing with funny lines, gimmicks atop a ghodi (Jassi again) and tons of PJJs (poor-Punju-jokes). Sonakshi throws in another ‘heavy-weight’ performance. In Ajay’s own words, “kaafi bhaari hai” (read: weight). She does her usual dance routine (with ceetees et al), spouts ‘chal jhoota’ to all men, and plays the moophat girl in true sardarni style

      • Expecting BigB to give honest opinions is futile. Especially when he has so many friends in the film industry.

When one attends a premier, one has to praise. There is no escape!

The picture will be clear after a few days.

Rani seems to have a field day over her cousin Kajol. It is rumoured that she helped in compiling the guest list.

Rani was never invited to any of BigB’s functions nowadays. But Ajay and Kajol get invited.

Kajol is as much part of YRF as SRK. Yet she is ignored this time.

We are living in very fluctuating times.

I mean, the guy says he wants to stand in front of grumpy Shah with his hands folded when Shah talks about AB’s acting abilities. If this is how he treats bad-mouthers, how in the world can he be blunt about people who he is on good terms with? He is a text-book Libran.. I have learnt never ever to take his opinions on contemporary Hindi films seriously. Doesn’t matter that I am a die-hardest fan…

    • No don’t agree … If Sr B doesn’t like any movie, he don’t even say any word even if he attended premier. Case study … CCTC, he attended its premier in London but doesn’t praise it on next day blog spot .. he just said “I attended premier of CCTC on insist of Akshay kumar” .. that’s it. There are few more such occasions i have to recollect.

  7. As the star-studded JTHJ premiere began with style, there was something amiss. Kajol, the main lead of the all-time YRF hit DDLJ was not present as she was apparently not invited. This is the result of the legal battle between Yash Raj Films and Ajay Devgn Ffilms for screens. Thus, Kajol, a YRF favorite, ended up being a member of the enemy camp.

Kajol’s sister Tanisha confirmed this news by retweeting, “@Tanishaa003 Kajol was da leading lady of DDLJ… we condemn such shameful act decide by rani, srk, yash ji family, uday and adi”.

I know everything has its pros and cons. But Gujarati People prefer the Ban on drinking, though i understand the blackmarket thing, as there is this Act called Prevention of Anti Social Activiites Act, 1986 ( in 1985 we had ordinance) via which bootleggers who cause danger to public place are arrested and detained for one year without any trial. And i know a bit as i have myself challenged the law as unconstitutional for a client of mine. Notice is issued to Advocate General of the State of Gujarat.

But even the strong Modi Govt has refused to interfere in this field… as one can sense that people of gujarat prefer safe and healthy enviornment at public places.

  9. The quips about Sardar jokes and Sardar quirks lend a self-deprecating transparency to the character. Ideally, Akshay Kumar would’ve played this part. But Devgn takes the rather dimwitted but affable character to a higher than the goofy plane. This man knows when to act dumb.

Among the truckloads of supporting players, Mukul Dev as an oafish loutish drunkard stands out. But didn’t he play the same character in Samir Karnik’s “Chaar Din Ki Chaandni” not too long ago? Come to think of it, haven’t we visited the Punjabi heartland frequently enough since Imtiaz Ali’s “Jab We Met”? Give this one a chance though.

“Son Of Sardaar” is a rollicking rumbustious wild and wacky action-comedy. It’s a spaghetti-western relocated to Punjab that would keep Devgn’s fans regaled. Even if you are not a big fan of the typical potboiler this one makes you smile.

One question: why was Juhi Chawla behaving like Dolly Bhindra?

      Tuesday 13th November 2012 12.00 IST

      Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Son Of Sardaar had a good opening of around 65-70% on average at multiplexes with Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Rajasthan being excellent with capacity or near capacity houses.

The opening was just decent in parts of Mumbai circuit, West Bengal and South with some theatres opening below 50%.

The single screen opening is similar to multiplexes with excellent collections in North and decent elsewhere but in places like UP and Rajasthan where the film has taken an excellent start it has limited single screens and a weak chain of single screens which will hit business.

Diwali Puja will hit the film from noon onwards and Son Of Sardaar may be hit harder than Jab Tak Hai Jaan because business is hit hardest in circuits where Son Of Sardaar has opened to excellent response while South has limited affect where the film has had average opening.

      Tuesday 13th November 2012 11.30 IST

      Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Jab Tak Hai Jaan had an extraordinary opening at multiplexes collecting full houses or near full across the board. The opening was excellent even at multiplexes which are not known to take a huge opening in the first show.

The pace will slow after 12 noon due to Dilwali Puja but in some circuits the effect of Diwali Puja is limited and those circuits will come out with huge numbers.

The opening has opened at record pace in Mysore and West Bengal with multiplexes recording mind boggling numbers and with Bangalore having a limit of shows on screenings per film, the release of Jab Tak Hai Jaan is on par with the biggest releases so it may even manage a record opening day total in Mysore.

The early indications from single screens are also a strong opening but not at the level of multiplexes, the opening gets lower as the centres gets smaller.

All reviews of JTHJ so far have mentioned that the script is flawed, the story has large holes in plot and logic, that it is not realistic, that it strains credulity, etc., but that it is still worth seeing. • As Ghajini like journals are read by Akira , the tale of Samar and Meera in London and the punish that breaking promises to god brings unfurl. Meera grew up trading wishes with promises to God. In a church, with Samar at her side she made a promise to God that she would not cross the “limits” of her friendship with Samar ( Because she wasnt 100% sure she had the commitment in her without said promise). Echoes of those movies where they referred to such limit crossings as “Kahi phisal na jaaye” rang through. Any how the limits are crossed, in the phone booth, in the bed, in the subway, outdoors and so on. And such immorality has to be punished by the screenwriting gods with a Samar traffic accident. At this point Meera makes a wish/promise trade (Let him live and if he does i’ll never be with him again). Samar gets better and Meera tells Samar that he has been let go, coz of promises to God. A part of the deal is that Samar shouldnt stick around London.

Cinematic challenges in recovering from retrograde amnesia from 2002 to 2012 :1.God Dam Katrina Kaif doesnt age in 10 years 2. Memory of seeing Ghajini erased

Some time after the interval Samar (10 years or so after the Meera times) returns to London ( note he had promised to stay away from London)…and… the wrath of god! Traffic incident again! Also as a free bonus memory loss (retrograde to the point of the first accident). The movie rolls on and even towards the very end when Samar and Meera again break the promise there is an Inception-like-will-the-top-stop feel, will the wrath of God strike again.”

      Seriously that’s a insane plot!!

Dont tell me there is memory loss, and seperation because of promise to god?? are they indeed nuts!

  18. I had the incredible misfortune of watching JTHJ today and it was absymally bad. Even excellent company couldn’t salvage this mess for me- my friends and I very tempted to walk out at more than one point- The film plods on painfully for FAR too long.

SRK looks awful and it’s blatantly obvious that his loverboy avatar is well past expiry date. This film also has the weakest female characters of any Yash Chopra romance that I have seen- Katrina’s character is completely unbelievable and purely there for fantasy fulfillment, and her lifeless acting only emphasizes the short-comings of her character arc. Anushka is the best of this trio, but her ‘bubbly’ act starts grating after a while, and she is saddled with the typical ‘modern carefree bitch’ (as she describes herself) character who loses her independence and strength the minute she falls in love with a man. Still, her character was the best thing in this film, and the movie was most bearable when it focussed on her, especially the stretch in Ladakh. Oh, and the Katrina-SRK chemistry is absolutely unconvincing- SRK-Anushka actually look more beleivable together, despite the clearly visible age difference.

The film tries pathetically hard to be edgy/ youthful/ modern: there are several EXTREMELY awkward kisses, a very fake looking ‘wild’ London party and even an insipid lecture on the invalidity of marraige and how one doesn’t need a piece of paper to love someone. But the worst offender in the trying-too-hard-to-be-cool department has to be Anushka’s character. Here is a sample of her dialouge:
“I’m 21, I’m from the instant generation. Instant break-up, instant make-up. We have sex first, then we fall in love.”

And finally, the worst element of the film- the ridiculously convoluted, miserably poor plot. The movie is overtly melodramatic, even by YRF standards and it involves every single tired SRK Loverboy cliche inexistence: multiple nearly fatal accidents, memory loss, estranged mothers, estranged lovers, religious guilt, emotional blackmail, unrequited lovers, arranged engagements that are destined to be broken and earnest vows taken in the church. There is also sickeningly sachcharine dialouge, jingoistic national pride, and idiotic medical advice aplenty.

Basically- this is the leaswatch this only if you are a die-hard SRK fan or if you really like ogling at Katrina Kaif- and even then, you might find yourself growing restless at certain points.

    • one question is Katrina Playing foreigner in the film ? if yes cool. If no, why pray to jesus ? and in church ?

i have found this quite god awful, this days that marriages in silver screen are more like christian marriages and that instead of praying to one’s own god, more characters are shown praying to church?

I am not religious minded, and accept all God as one, but this tendency is quite too unacceptable for me atleast.

      Like

      • Rooney- In the film, both of Katrina’s parents are Punjabi, so she is technically Indian. But culturally, her character is a very caricaturish, stereotypical interpretation of the ‘prim, propah and posh’ type of British girl.

As for identity loss- I would not say so. The film is still very much a Yash/ Aditya Chopra romance- but they have tried to incorporate ‘edgy’/ ‘sexy’ elements into their usual formula which do not work at all IMO- for example, there is one scene with Katrina stripping off her clothes sexily on the London tube which is very cheaply filmed- it looks so out of place with the usual YRF universe, almost like a spoof that you would see in an SNL sketch or something.

        • Sadly, perverted is an apt adjective to describe the entire SRK-Kat ‘romance’ in this film- much of their footage together wouldn’t look out of place in a Hashmi film. I would NOT reccomend taking young children to watch this film!

It’s just that the whole set-up is so stereotypical and SLEAZY- Kat and SRK are alone in public transport, Kat starts sexily unbuttoning her shirt to reveal some seductive lingerie whilst pouting suggestively, and then unzips her boots- at that point, this old man steps into the tube and starts ogling Kat..

        • “But if alip to lip kiss is needed as per script, what’s the big deal?”

The script is completely harebrained and nothing that goes on is ‘needed’ as such. And it’s not the kisses themselves that I obejct to- it’s how supremely awkward and unsuave they looked. The film was clearly trying to project SRK as a more sexual hero, as opposed to the squeaky clean lover boy image of Raj/ Rahul- but it did it in a very inept way, and large portions of the film ended up looking pretty sleazy.

Just to make myself clear- I’m not taking a moralistic stand here and saying that any of the film content was ‘indecent’- I’m talking in terms of aesthetics and tone. It is possible for certain directors to film graphic lovemaking scenes in a sophisticated manner, and for certain actors to carry off such content- unfortunately, neither the director nor the lead actor had a clue as to how to construct a mature, charismatically sexual hero (which is what they were aiming for) and the writing for the sexually liberated female character was awful (although Anushka did the best with her role that she could)- as a result, the ‘edgy/ modern/ sexual’ aspect of the film was utterly cringeworth.

In any case, this is not just my opinion- Rooney quotes a reviewer who compared the film to Hashmi’s movies, and even a critic like Mihir Fadnavis (who is no prude when it comes to cinema, as his previous reviews will prove) found the sex scenes to be disgustingly shot.

  20. Here are a few of the most idiotic moments in the films IMO (contains SPOILERS):

-Katrina Kaif’s extremely traditional Punjabi father arranges her marraige to a white, English man who dutifully agrees to marry the childhood friend that his parents picked out for him.

-Katrina, who has spent her whole life in London’s most glamorous social circles is blissfully unaware of the city’s partying scene and needs the newly arrived SRK to ‘liberate’ her by taking her to a ‘wild’ party! I can understand if she grew up in Saudi Arabia, but binge drinking and sexual explictiness are a common feature even at the most prestigious British universities like Oxford and Cambridge- there is no way that a sexy, wealthy London girl can be so sheltered that just one night of dirty dancing will magically turn her from a prim-and-proper woman into a wanton sex goddess.

-When SRK loses his memory the doctor’s ‘cure’ is to ochestrate a laughably silly drama that involves Katrina and Anushka engaging SRK is elaborate pretend scenarios- apparently for the sake of his ‘mental stability’! What kind of crazy doctor makes a woman pretend to be married to her ex-boyfriend as a medicial solution? 😛

    – And the most idiotic moment of them all:

SRK walks into a cordoned-off police area in London, interrupts an official bomb squad that are diffusing a bomb, and does the job himself! Not only does the squad not get suspicious and arrest the strange, South Asian man who wanders in and correctly identifies the bomb- they also let a random, unverified stranger handle the bomb while they stand by cluelessly watching! 😛

          Like

        • No! You misunderstood me- I did NOT say that Katrina should enjoy casual sex/ binge drinking just because she is a glamorous young woman living in London- she certainly does not have to. But as a young woman moving with a glamorous crowd in London- she would have definietely been EXPOSED to such aspects of the city, and it is unbelievable that she would be so shocked and transformed just by attending one party where people dance wildly.

There is a BIG difference between saying that a woman would be aware of these things and saying that a woman should do these things!

        • For example, here is a recent news item about a university party at Cambridge-

          http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2140696/Cambridge-students-drunken-park-party-Passing-drinking-port-condoms.html

This is the sort of thing that Indian movies would charecterize as behaviour exhibited only by bimbos and crazy out-of-control party animals, but in reality this is just a part of student culture in the UK, and even the most intelligen students at the most prestigious academic institutions are part of this culture. So it’s unrealistic that a rich, glamorous university student in London would be shocked and transformed by what is relatively normal behaviour for her demographic.

        • Let’s stick to the point of discussion – to which I responded, as Naveed and mksrooney did, about your declarations.

Your insistence that a woman is EXPOSED to things because she moves with a certain type of crowd is a thought you want to impose on others just because you can’t accept it yourself.
It’s not necessary to move into ‘every’ activity of such a crowd. One can be in it, and yet outside it.

          Like

        • If you click on the top rated comments for this newspaper article- they’re all basically saying, what’s the big deal, let the students have fun- and this would be the normal reaction that somebody in the UK would have to such ‘debauchery’- so it’s not very believable when you have this glamorous Londoner who is so sheltered that one night of wearing skimpy clothes and dancing without inhibition have such a profound effect on her character. Which is NOT to say that she MUST do these things in order to be glamorous and modern- she can still be aware of these things and CHOOSE not to do them. But for her to be shown as being prim-and-proper simply because she is not even aware of people who live in a more uninhibited manner is unrealistic.

        • OG- you can be outside it but you cannot be completely unaware of such a pervasive element of the culture that surrounds you!

        • I feel like we are going around in circles now. I’m not going to argue about this anymore, so let me just explain what I meant one last time:

I do NOT think that modernity is simply about getting drunk and having sex- and I do NOT like films where the ‘modern’ female character is shown demonstrating her modernity only by getting drunk and having sex.

At the same time, I do think that it is unrealistic that a university student in London would be so sheltered that going to a party where people dance a little raunchily would give her a major culture shock. However, this does not in anyway mean that I think that all young women in London spend their time at such parties, or that this is in any way a prerequisite for being a modern woman!

As for your idea that I am trying to start a Ra.One style mockery of this film- you are being overly paranoid. I was simply voicing my thoughts on a film that I thought was unintentionally funny- I am not masterminding any plot to bring down the film!

Tearing a film apart, writing a scathing review – can be done for every film, even the best. And when you get support of several it begins to take on shape, and meaning.

I’m absolutely certain I could come up with an equally scathing review of any of Amir’s films, and tear it apart, (I could do that for the trailer of Talaash), but it would be made redundant, which reviews like yours and other ones deserve to be made for being so transparent in its intentions.

We thought if we delay it , and the movie was bad, the bad word of mouth may make it impossible for us to catch it ever. And we can kind of sit through it if it was bad as long as we were in a group.

I did see it before reading any review. And I am writing this before readinga single review.

Well, I did have a suspicion it would be bad , but even in my dreams I could not think it would be this bad.

Cliché piled upon cliché, it was impossible to believe Yash Chopra actually made it.

Poor struggling yung man falling in love with a rich mna’s daughter, whose father wants her to marry another young dude. Promise made to Jesus. Memory loss and memory regained. In this time and age? For god’s sake, how could you do this to your own legacy, Yashji?

And all this desperation on Sharukh’s part. Mouth to mouth kiss. Lovemaking scenes. And dancing slasa. This Khan just can’t. Why does he even try? And Katrina, who w s showing some signs of learning bit of acting, has regressed ten years in this film. The songs are dated and boring. Not one leaves a mark. Though Katrina was wonderfully spicy in her Ishq Shava number. But the sequence was stretched way too long. And Shahrukh spoilt it with his pretense that he can dance.

The only this that made it somewhat tolerable as Anoushka’s perky presence. Her performance as faultless.

But in the end , even the scintillating company of ten could not ameliorate he boredom.

The script and the direction is so bad that I don’t want tow waste any more time writing about it after wasting 3 hours on the film.
If a film could be senile and puerile at the same time this is it.

( And from among the eleven of us, nine hated it outright and two found it tolerable.)

    Tuesday 13th November 2012 19.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The last Diwali’s have been dominated by Shahrukh Khan with Ra.One in 2011 and Ajay Devgn with Golmaal 3 in 2010.

This year has seen both Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgn come on Diwali day and the early collections suggest both actors will record similar opening day figures that they had when they last came on Diwali.

Ra.One grossed around 14.50 crore nett in 2011 and Golmaal 3 grossed around 8 crore nett in 2010

Despite both films starting strongly collections took a dip from afternoon onwards due to Diwali and it is looking a 14 crore nett range for Jab Tak Hai Jaan and around 8 crore nett for Son Of Sardaar with a possible 10% up or down movement depending on late evening and night shows.

South India with limited Diwali affect could push Jab Tak hai Jaan if circuits like Mysore and Nizam are at record pace.

I was struck by the supreme irony of SRK celebrating his latest outing as a romantic hero, twenty years after he started, while many of the heroines who gave him his biggest hits are now relegated to “has been” status — heroines like Madhuri, Juhi, Preity, Rani, even Aishwarya (though she wasn’t his heroine in a YRF film) — and Kajol wasn’t even invited! A better example of the cruel sexism of Bollywood can’t be found.

Obviously, I am ssuming thatthe films opening is not going to earth shaterring and trending will not be decent. At this point,I think it might end in the Ra.One range overall. It is entirely possible that it might trend somewhat better and get to a 150 crore deal, tho unlikely.
Anyway, those who were predicting that the 3I records will be broken are again going to be prime offerings for an omelette!

    Like

    • What interests me is why the script is so bad. Surely, with all his experience, Yash Chopra should have been able to identify its weaknesses before he ever started shooting? And what is it with Aditya Chopra and his cockeyed “love” stories? I really wonder how he came up with the script for DDLJ. While it had its loopholes, they were no more than usual for a Hindi film, but after that, I haven’t been able to buy any one of the “romances” he has written, whether it’s DTPH, Veer Zaara, RNBDJ, or ETT.

I’m also baffled by viewers who find these films to be sweeping or “epic” romances. I’ve just read some posts by people who have seen JTHJ, and acknowledge its loopholes and cliches, but still say they loved the “romance.” What does this mean? I honestly don’t know. I think Mughal-E-Azam is an epic romance, as is Devdas (even, or especially, in its bowlderized filmi versions). Aradhana can be a sweeping romance, maybe even Guide (though I think there’s a lot more to Guide than mere romance). But I can’t think of anything else as being “epic.” For credible and charming romances, I prefer the films SRK did with Juhi and Aziz Mirza, and even Chalte Chalte. I’ve never been able to warm up to the Yashraj romance. Can someone explain what is so appealing about them?

      Like

      • Everybody makes one mistake and that would explain DDLJ. Otherwise, Aditya seems to be a somewhat ordinary film maker but a decent businessman.
I think Yashji’s fingerprints on films supposedly directed by him had been getting fainter and on that score, I would give him a pass.
I also agree with the assessment that while has his place in BW history, he was not really an exceptional director without Salim-Javed and AB.

        Like

      • because the public fed by media 24×7 on what to think considers anything epic if it is labelled so. and media better call it epic if it is made by a big production house, has big names and has taken too much money to make. the audience needs to get with the program if that ill-spent money is to be recovered. they better fall in line with the popular opinion, or what they are being told is the popular opinion so it can be made popular, so on and on it goes in circles. also not sure if audience cares either way, they burn some money on the latest big release, forget about it in a few days and move on. the producers throw a ‘success party’, pictures are splashed, victory is declared. and the cycle of fooling people starts all over again. the appearance of success is clearly more important than actual success if this fraud is to be perpetuated.

      • @ Sanjana: But still, though he worked with superstars like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan,he did ensure that story/direction, music, were not pushed
to the backburner. It was a case of the writers and actors complementing and shining the film further. He faltered in the ’80s again with films like Vijay and Faasle
but except for an aging DILIP KUMAR in MASHAAL, noone else was a humongous star. Interestingly, the only film where he tried to go back to his roots but with an
experimental vigor was LAMHE. But Anil Kapoor hit high only after TEZAAB and RAM LAKHAN. YC again arguably created and
complemented a super-star only with SRK. After DARR, he has only worked with SRK. Films like DTPH and VZ were bad to average films but still made a lot of
money. It also proved that SRK-YC could not go wrong financially at least. In this equation, SRK was the one who benefitted the most since one began to get the
feeling that SRK’s presence is important to bolster a YC film. With RAHUL/RAJ persona-association of SRK with YC a success, though people whined a bit about quality of
films compared to YC’s work with AB and others, I think audience did start feeling that SRK’s presence can be the strong link that can make a weak product work – at
least WRT YC-SRK combination.Hence I felt that as SRK (along with music of course) started becoming more and more important for YC atmospherics,YC’s quality w.r.t.
        his films went down..

The first day collections of Jab Tak Hai Jaan are in the 12.50-12.75 crore nett range as per early estimates. The collections were hit hard from 1 pm onwards due to Diwali Puja but circuits like West Bengal and Mysore came up with fantastic collections both comfortably crossing the 1 crore nett mark.

The collections are short of the figures recorded by Ra.One last year which is due to the clash with Son Of Sardaar.

The business of the film in single screens was much weaker than multiplexes as the opening was not that strong in single screens especially mass pockets. Jab Tak Hai Jaan will show a big jump in business today though again the clash will ensure business does not go towards record territory.

    • So its about 12.5 cr for JTHJ and 8.5 cr for SOS.
I think the whole fracas about screens has clearly hurt SOS as its bread and butter was going to be single screens here. And it was a rather foolish deal as it really has not benefited JTHJ, as reflected by most reports that single screen business is hardly that great.
Really a silly move…as the move to strike a deal has not benefited one film immensely, but has been destructive to another. The smarter move would have been to tie in the multiplexes where the business of JTHJ would have reaped the benefits. This has acted as a “stop” in business for a movie like SOS that could have blossomed in these chains.
And accounting for the dirty tactics, it could quite easily have been both films being in the 10-12 crore range. Even so, JTHJ has a screen advantage and better screens anyway!
So the SRK-Katrina-YRF-Rahman-Chopra’s death etc combo is hardly earth shattering in battering SOS which by all means is a frequently seen type of venture nowadays!
      Expected a lot more!!!

Son Of Sardaar First Day Business

    Wednesday 14th November 2012 11.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Son Of Sardaar collected around 8.50 crore nett on day one as per early estimates. Again like Jab Tak Hai Jaan the film was hit by Diwali Puja, actually it was affected more by Diwali Puja as its best business was in circuits that are hit hard by Diwali festivities like East Punjab, CI and Rajasthan.

The clash with Jab Tak Hai Jaan also hurt the film especially UP where the lack of good single screens meant business remained behind Jab Tak Hai Jaan when it should have been going by trends in MP where the release was balanced and Son Of Sardaar came out of head.

The film will show a huge jump today but again the clash will mean business is held back to a certain extent.

  53. That Katrina was so ‘sheltered and unaware’ of the life of rich university students is being superficially commented upon as the gravest of flaws.
Followed by a criticism of Katrina being sleazy (because she unzipped her boots – I can’t get over this hilarious bit, and have been caught chuckling to myself by unsuspecting people around me LOL)
There are perhaps other examples of such sleaziness.

Putting these two together my conclusion is that Katrina’s initiation hadn’t been done yet, which I guess ALL need – sort of a starting point. Some may get into it on the very first day and some may take time – which finally Katrina seems to have done with the HELP of SRK.
I don’t see the problem here. Didn’t she ultimately become like what is expected of her (by some)?

If you would actually bother to read what I write, instead of rabidly attacking me just because I have dared to criticize your idol, you might understand what my problem was. And pretending that you thought I said Anushka’s dialouges is a laughably transparent trick- especially since they were clearly encased in quotation marks AND I had indicated that they were a sample of her dialouges.

  54. Diwali Puja Witnesses Record Collections

    Wednesday 14th November 2012 11.30 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

This Diwali has seen record collections with a 21 crore nett approx combined total by Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar. Diwali day is always weak for business but has jumped 45% from last year when Ra.One collected 14.50 crore nett.

If one film had come alone it had the potential to take the whole amount or at least close to it. The totals for the last few Diwali days has been as follows.

    2009

    (Golmaal Returns, Action Replayy)

    TOTAL – 11 crore

    2010

    (Ra.One)

    TOTAL – 14.5 crore (+32%)

    2011

(Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Son Of Sardaar)

    TOTAL – 21 crore (+ 45%)

    • I think BOI should decide what their story on Diwali and Laxmi Puja is! First they say every year that it’s a weak day for the box office thereby justifying any and every collection. Now they’re saying the numbers have jumped 45% in just one year on that ‘weak’ day! In other words if one film had done that 21 crores (of course it doesn’t quite work that way.. JTHJ has no real single screen appeal, so people wouldn’t exactly be flocking to it in the absence of SOS!) it would have been one of the highest openers around, at least in BG, Agneepath range. But wasn’t this supposed to be impossible given the hit films took on Diwali day 1?! Unless JTHJ was going to open to 30 crores or whatever (obviously not possible given single screen weakness) it would have the best possible opening day given BOI’s numbers! Guess a lot of people would have missed the puja! and now they’re saying Ra One was itself up 32% on the previous year!

      • I don’t think they are contradicting themselves. It does say;

        >Diwali day is always weak for business

I think what it means is …”in spite of”…there has been an increase in the last few years.
I would say this increase is due to increase in population and screens.

My belief has always been that diwali is not a good time for release of a film as other festivals.
        Depending upon the community;
Christmas is best – with a holiday on hand and a vast majority not celebrating it
Eid is second for the same reasons, while Diwali has a large majority spending time at home with family.

        Like

        • Actually there is very much a contradiction because I don’t otherwise see how you could have a one day total of 21 crores when 99.9% of films don’t get to such numbers on opening day in any circumstance!

On the rest for at least 60 or more years of India’s post-Independence history no one really thought the Diwali period was a problem in any sense. No one ever talked about the Laxmi Puja being an issue even through the 90s and beyond. It’s only in recent years when some of these day 1 numbers were not quite what they were expected to be that these explanations were pulled out of thin air. Why didn’t anyone talk about Laxmi Puja when KKHH was releasing? No such excuses were offered even though BMCM released at the same time and actually had a bigger week 1. These explanations are borne out of weakness. When your film is doing superlatively and there are no issues no one focuses on this other stuff. Now of course the BMCM competition hurt KKHH but the point is that they still weren’t making these excuses then!

Now I’m not at all saying JTHJ won’t do well. It might well do a lot but the point is that these explanations come about for a reason. And it’s basically the stuff that drives fans or partisans in the online universe as well. If you have a day 1 number for a big SRK film that doesn’t seem to match the highest benchmarks you either have to concede that SRK isn’t one of the top stars or you have to attack the numbers. Needless to say the partisans do the latter! As recently as OSO no one talked about the Laxmi Puja stuff. However they did a year earlier when Don released. It’s obvious what’s going on.

          Like

        • I don’t think anyone is saying that Diwali period is a problem. It’s just not as lucrative as other festival holidays.
For years films have been released on Diwali, agree, but the importance of front loading has only just risen in the past years.
Earlier they could wait for another day for the BO to pick up.

          Like

        • When OSO released it broke the opening weekend record that to against a decent formidable opener in Saawariya – multiple films in the past have done the same!
The crux is the openings related to Don, Don2, MNIK and now JTHJ are nowhere near the scale created for recent Salman/Aamir films. Ra.One is the only one that opened big (well on the 2nd day) and that film had unprecedented amount spent on marketing – a 1 year build-up of sorts.
Diwali if not the best day in the year can at least be the 3rd best day after Xmas, Eid. A normal Friday release is a working day, far less appealing than Diwali.
Otherwise ask the simple question? Why release on Diwali if it is not lucrative? Why tie in single screens and make big statements in the past like “Diwali is mine” etc. Why release ON Diwali? Why not on the next day i.e. today? In simple words why knowingly “handicap” your film on a day which is perceived as disadvantageous?
Clearly the big films ALWAYS are vying for the date yearly! It’s not those insipidly boring weeks when 3 bite sized small films are releasing with NO hype!
There is no logic in suggesting it is a “poor” day or weak day for business. The hypothesis is : IF it is, WHY release on the day?

t was a fitting tribute to Bollywood’s king of romance. The premiere of late filmmaker Yash Chopra’s last directorial film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, at Yash Raj Studios, was as grand as it gets.

Kajol, however, made a sly entry, avoiding the media and coming in using the back entrance, accompanied by the eternally shutter-shy Aditya Chopra.

    • I don’t know, Rooney. Kajol’s sister (Tanisha, I think) had tweeted earlier that Kajol wasn’t invited, and after this article appeared, tweeted again, asking did they clone Kajol to have her attend? So there’s still some confusion.

There was confusion about whether Salman attended, too, because there were no photos of him at the premiere. But Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta responded on twitter to enquiries from fans saying yes, he was there, and then Amitabh Bachchan tweeted about spending time with Salman, Aamir, & SRK at the premiere, so it was confirmed. Then a photo of him taken by Hard Kaur at the premiere surfaced, so finally all doubts were put at rest.

So far there is no similar confirmation about Kajol attending, except for this HT article, and we do have a flat denial from Tanisha.

Irony is a b****. To be struck by a car while on a motorcycle is one thing. But to be struck by a car twice is plain foolishness. Major Samar Anand is a poster boy for road safety. First, he gets hit by a car while showing off his biking skills to his new girlfriend. The second time he gets hit again by a car while waiting for Discovery Channel reporter Akira (Anushka Sharma). Look while you are crossing the road.

Rapidex English just goes out of business:

Everything is possible in cinema. If you set your mind to learning perfect English, you can learn it despite thousands of distractions in the form of a very pretty Katrina Kaif. Shah Rukh, who goes by using Pidgin English in London, morphs into a suave, smooth-talking gentleman with a bit of a nudge from the woman he loves. She in return aces a difficult Punjabi song with guitar chords and all, taught by Shah Rukh.

    Who needs a bomb suit?:

There are bombs waiting to defused, literally everywhere and every day. Major Samar Anand, an officer with the army’s bomb disposal unit, takes on one IED after another with his bare hands. Armed with just a clipper, Anand refuses a bomb suit every time his services are called for. Is it practical? Of course not. But that’s what you do when you flirt with death – basically be stupid – without a care for your loved ones.

There are easier and less expensive ways to die, you know?
After being rejected by his lady love because of a promise she made to god, Samar Anand dives headfirst into a life of danger. He joins the Indian army’s bomb disposal unit and defuses live ammunition for a living as a counter-vow to Katrina to risk his life every day. It does seem a very roundabout way to die, no? Jumping off a building or an overdose of pills would have been quicker. But who are we to get in the way of a death drawn out over several years?

Keep your chatty friends away when you are defusing bombs:

Anushka Sharma is a chatty, aspiring reporter for the Discovery channel with a penchant for finding trouble. Trussed to a rope and hanging under a bridge to film Shah Rukh Khan at work, she happily chats away without the slightest worry that she might be actually distracting him from what is clearly a highly dangerous job.
The army’s only purpose is to play football with its guests:
Our jawans are in fact so bored of their monotonous lives that they are willing to wait on hand and foot for the world’s most ditzy reporter. They cook for her and dance with her and hurl beer bottles around while she twists them around her little finger.

Come again, a promise made to…whom?

So Meera, who is a habitual trader with God, promises to give up Samar if Jesus would spare his life and keep him alive. It’s the silliest thing we have heard in a long time. Who gives up a man she loves because she thinks that her being with him will be a danger to his life? What happened to fighting for someone if you love them?

    Retrograde amnesia:

If you must have an affliction, go for retrograde amnesia. It is the most convenient illness known to Indian doctors to get the hero out of a sticky spot. He can’t remember a thing from the past and finds it difficult to adjust to the present. But the condition is temporary and he will make a full recovery over time (read: after the plot twists are sorted).

    British police…dude, don’t let a stranger saunter into a cordoned-off
    area!

The British police allows a stranger who looks disoriented and can actually be the one to plant it, tackle live ammunition because ‘he looks like he knows what he’s talking about!’ Are you kidding me?

You are still single because you read other people’s diaries

Never, ever read someone’s personal diary – children are taught this at age 5. Either Akira Rai’s parents left that bit of education out or she defied her upbringing anyway. It’s rude not only to read someone’s diary but to quiz him on that afterwards, which she does. If she wonders why she’s still single, it’s because she does not respect people’s private spaces.

It must be so devastatingly difficult for him to be a muslim minority in an industry ruled by the trinity of the three Khans, and of course we must pity the poor boy for not growing up in a palace- never mind that he was born into a middle-class family, and had a good college education, which are fortunes that only granted to a tiny fraction of India’s population.

No one denies that. and no one has issues with that.

What one has issues with is that why some one with so much talent and so much power has to be associated with drivel like Ra One, Billu and Jab Tak Hai Jaan?

Abroad, when Leonardo Di DiCaprio has a Titanic under his belt he greenlights an ‘ Inception’ a ‘ Shutterisland’ . Closer home, after Ghajini , aamir signs a 3 Idiots and after 3 Idiots supports a Talaash. A Ranbir Kapoor signs a ‘ Rockstara’ a ‘ Barfi’ and a ‘ Bombay Velvet’ .

Wherever SRK came from (and his struggle has actually been exaggerated in some ways.. he was a star on TV which is how he got into films and it is not my understanding that he got into TV completely without using influence) is completely irrelevant to how he’s done as actor or star. The audience wasn’t watching him more because they sympathized with his bio relative to that of other stars! Hrithik Roshan arrived in a blaze of glory. Presumably the audience did not hold his connections against him?! At a human level it certainly displays a specific set of qualities to be able to do more without the advantage of greater influence but in the final analysis when we compare stars and their legacies or their respective bodies of work we throw this stuff out of the window. It is completely irrelevant. But also there’s something fundamentally insincere about invoking this angle only for one star. One should then look at the entire history of Bombay cinema and grade stars according to how they might or might not have been helped with family connections and so on. when Raj Kapoor’s work is celebrated the world over no one particularly cares who he was related to (it’s a different matter that he did start from scratch.. though of course Prithviraj’s son starting from scratch is hardly the same as anyone else doing the same!) and how he got to where he did.

All of this reflects a rather bourgeois prejudice in these matters where somehow ‘doing it on your own’ means more than anything else. First of all there’s a blind spot even in this belief because one should also consider the larger institutional frameworks that allow us to prosper in life. So assuming a certain background and certain social privileges one can do things on one’s own where the same would not be possible for someone in a completely different position. Leaving this aside this belief has a very ‘recent’ history. Once upon a time in England people who had to actually work to pay their bills were considered to be of inferior social status. The true measure of ‘class’ was then not having to work for one’s station in life. I don’t automatically consider one of these perspectives better than the other. Each has its issues. But we live in the bourgeois moment where one of these seems more natural to our ways of thinking while the other comes across as repulsive.

But even ignoring all of this one cannot apply such an explanation only in one instance or the other. It’s like the box office argument. You either look at competition or you don’t. You either look at some other factors or you don’t. You don’t engage in all of this only to explain certain kinds of success or explain away certain kinds of failure.

The same goes for longevity by the way (and I had a comment on this sometime back). There are lots of perhaps important human qualities revealed when one displays a certain longevity but this does not automatically mean that one has produced work of great quality. Otherwise we would have to consider Jeetendra one of Bollywood’s finest stars! Because one can survive even as a mediocrity for all sorts of reasons. One can even do so very prosperously. We don’t ask how long Guru dutt made films when we judge the quality of his work. No one, at least this side of sanity, would judge Yash Chopra to be greater than Guru Dutt just because he last for so many decades and Guru didn’t last a fourth of that period!

        • Again you’re missing the point. It might be creditable at a human level to be able to achieve success without these crutches. However that means nothing when it comes to box office performance or acting credentials. Prestige directors making interesting films won’t cast Akshay for these biographical reasons! Nor will the audience show up more for his films (versus Salman’s) for that reason. That’s the whole point here. Much as Indira Gandhi had a powerful genealogical calling card but then she still was a very successful politician on her own. • Actually my point is exactly the same with Obama as well! The dramatic nature of Obama’s politics or his meteoric rise isn’t about how he spent his childhood. That’s an ‘interesting’ background within the context of American politics but Bill Clinton had a pretty tough life growing up too (single mother, economically challenged and so on). The crucial point with Obama is how quickly he went from political obscurity to the presidency. Had he like Clinton spent years being a governor (or in his case a Senator) that would be a different thing. He would still be a historic candidate but that’s a different debate.

Beyond this once he ‘does’ become president he is still judged by the same historic standards. What kinds of policies he supported, what bits of legislation he got through and so forth.

    • Absolutely.

There were rumours of working with Kashyap, Hirani, Bharadwaj, but all of them dont fulfill.

But when YC decides to make a film, one cant agree without reading the script or anything.

This is what is something akin to corporate social responsibility, similiarly a superstar owes a responsibility to the nation, audience, and himself and his profession

      1) to work with better scripts
      2) to bring social awareness with some films
      3) to make movies with different horizons and push the envelop.
      4) to make movies with a message.

      But i guess failure of

      Dil Se
      Swades… etc

struck hard on this Superstar… rather than he shud have worked better on the script.

And if it does Devgn will be the only other guy apart from Salman to have four 100 crore grossers (G3, Singham, BB and SOS- ). Not a mean feat for a guy who was never even amongst the top league of stars in the 90s and most of the last decade. And with Himmatwala arriving next year and Singham 2 in 2014 he should definitely add on to that list.

And he also had had two disasters in between in the form of Rascals and Tezz). throughout the last decade and till Rajneeti and Aakrosh Devgn always did prestige films with important directors (Satyagraha will be one such film). But since the debacle of Aakrosh he has gone commercial with a vengeance. And i can’t blame him completely for this since he has tasted this kind of success after abt 20 yrs in the business.

    • Ajay films are barely touching 100 whilst Salman films are hitting a century in a week. Big big difference. oh and Salman films are all SOLO.

      • But i was never making any direct comparison between the total gross of the films of the 2 stars.

        Like

      • Naveed, the problem with insisting only on the gross (goes without saying Salman is doing incredibly on this front at the moment) is that you also have to concede the other side of this argument which is that when he was nowhere in the game he was nobody as a star. In other words there were so many years of his career, in fact pretty much the entire last decade before Dabanng, where he never had anything remotely like a top grosser and was lucky to have a top five maybe once (Partner). The argument then could be made using purely the gross criteria that he wasn’t even in the top 5 since there were at least that many stars doing better than him. This isn’t just for you but for fans of some other stars as well who’ve unfortunately all resorted to the SRK game of saying ‘gross is all there is to the discussion and nothing else matters’. Well the problem then is that that since stars have both kinds of seasons in their career one then has to accept that the star is nothing in the other scenario. Which of course no true fan ever wants to admit. In fact the gap is often filled by the fan imagining that his or her favorite star has always been on or near the top or if he hasn’t there are completely rational reasons for this. In other words the ‘essence’ of the stardom is never questioned when it comes to one’s favorite. Except when the shoe is on the other foot and then it’s ‘only’ about who got 100 crores or whatever!

And again no one could possible argue at this point that Devgan is where Salman is. The latter is just going through an extraordinary phase. However these debates don’t just begin and end with what Salman has been doing since Dabanng! It’s a pretty recent chunk of history. I have myself argued that Salman reinvented himself with Dabanng and so on but I tend to resist positions that are absolutist. As if nothing else matters at all.

Simple words–Dont wish others to agree with me
Will elaborate later when time permits
    but to me–
after bachchan, srk has been the single most successful lead hero in bollywood and maybe indian film industry !!!

    All things considered …
    no ifs no buts
two/three years of salman wave and the ‘me-too’ guys witnessing a resurgence instead of midlife crisis like ajay, akshay dont even come close in the overall scheme of things.
Mastering /matching something towards the END of a term doesnt make one comparable to someone owning u for the entire course …Bad memory is convenient but invalid.
The ONLY hero atleast comparable in the overall success, impact and discretion (and tkaing into account directorial, production abilities) is Aamir Khan
It is a tough call between the two
but on the basis of the evidence placed so far—i consider SRK slightly ahead
This is NOT the current valuation but the cumulative one and taking into accoung all factors
Others are NOT expected to agree- so relax folks
As forthe extent of ‘struggle”and the level of ‘achievement’ and the ‘distance covered” –rate SRK above others as well…
There are other aspects where aamir, now even salman score –but im commenting on these criteria above
I have my criteria, reasons and im not a srk fan !!
Where bias ends and reason starts
Where reason ends and quirks start–the interface of reason, fantasy, quirks, commerce, rationality hahaha

But when push comes to shove, in the final assessment, there are some issues with aamirs stardom, frequency of films & reach in a cumulative basis that allows srk to be still ahead

One can’t imagine anyone else but Shah Rukh in the role of Samar. An individual with an emotional baggage. Although Shah Rukh has been an integral part of several romantic movies, he enacts it resplendently in JAB TAK HAI JAAN, brushing off any condemnation that he may have encountered for replicating himself in movies of parallel genre. The role gives the actor abundant opportunity to exhibit his talent and I must add, Shah Rukh transforms himself into the complex character with dexterity.

Katrina is the classic Yash Chopra heroine. An enigmatic beauty, who doubles up as a seductress [watch her in the ‘Saans’ track or the music piece]. She looks ethereal and enacts her part with elegance and restraint. As a matter of fact, she glides into her part with effortlessness and acts out some of the difficult moments with flourish. In view of the fact that a major portion of the story focuses on SRK and Katrina, one might assume that Anushka’s role is more of a supporting one, but that’s entirely fallacious. She’s an integral part of this story and it must be said that she walks away with some of the best scenes and lines in the movie. Her performance is full of grit.

2nd Day Worldwide Box Office Collections Of JAB TAK HAI JAAN

JAB TAK HAI JAAN Runs To Capacity Despite Bigger Release On Day Two

“Jab tak Hai Jaan” has done well by crossing 15 cr nett on day one despite competition from SOS. Film was expected to do well on 2nd day and film has certainly performed. Film also opened with big numbers overseas.

After collecting 15 cr nett on Tuesday, film jumped by almost 50% and as per early estimates film should collect 22.5 cr nett. Film collected well in all centers where it did well yesterday and registered growth in single screens in CP Berar, East Punjab, CI, Bihar and UP.

Film has got repeat audience even on 2nd day and that is a good news for the film. Film has to register a strong Thursday especially in single screens in North where ‘Bhaiya Dooj’ will get it good family audience. Tomorrow will decide that whether film will touch 100 cr in 6 days or more.

Film also opened in overseas territories with a bang as always the case with Shahrukh Khan starrer. Despite limited release as film willopen in all markets by tomorrow, film garnered in excess of 7 cr nett. It looks a good 50-60 cr weekend there and that is more than the budget of the film.

Film is only lagging in East Punjab and Rajasthan now but worldwide filmis heading for a huge total and might become the biggest or 2nd biggest hit of the year 2012. After all collections do count be it overseas or domestic.

Below are the collections for the film –

    Domestic Collections

    Tuesday 15.00 cr
    Wednesday 22.50 cr
    Total Domestic Collections 37.50 cr
    Total Overseas Collections 07.25 cr

SON OF SARDAAR Jumps With Same Pattern As Yesterday

“Son Of Sardaar” did well in few territories yesterday and film managed good numbers on day one thanks to those pockets. Today film was expected to do even better with holiday and film registered jump.

After collecting 10.50 cr nett on Tuesday, film jumped by 45-50% on Wednesday. As per early estimates, film should collect somewhere around 16 cr nett taking film’s two day collections to 26.50 cr nett.

Film has got its audience in CI, Rjasthan and East Punjab. But problem for the film still remains the limited audience in limited screens. Film failed to grow in Nizam, Mysore and West Bengal.

Film also opened in overseas territories and as expected fetched an average start except Pakistan where JTHJ yet to hit screens. Film has collected record 22 lakhs in Pakistan on Day one.

Film has to put big numbers in Mumbai and South in order to come up well and beat JTHJ in days to come. One should also remember that film has to beat JTHJ with big margin in order to recover money at least as film can’t expect a huge run in overseas. As of now one can say that film is doing well but in limited circles.

Below are the collections for the film –

    Domestic Collections

    Tuesday 16.00 cr
    Wednesday 10.50 cr
    Total Domestic Collections 26.50 cr
    Total Overseas Collections 01.20 cr

The growth on day two is around 50% which is good but mass circuits did not show the growth they should have. Going by the trends on Wednesday, the film is likely to fair best in the big cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore.

Basically the clash has split the market Jab Tak Hai Jaan set to do better in some pockets and Son Of Sardaar set to do better in other pockets.

The film is doing very well in East Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, CI and Rajasthan. The collections in Delhi/UP are also super strong in terms of occupancies though the figures are not huge due to the chain of theatres being low collecting theatres. It will have a good run in Delhi/UP.

The business is not so strong in West Bengal, Mysore and Tamil Nadu/Kerala but being a North film that is expected.

Well, both are not very good movies but while one pretended to be a great movie, the other did not.In the former case, there will be some disappointment due to skyhigh expectations while in the latter case the audience will not be that disappointed as they know what to expect.
Can we call Ajay Devgn Braveheart as the entire industry supported the other party and deserted him in the hour of need?

Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan was released on 2,500 screens and it has reportedly collected Rs 15.23 crore all over India.

The Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt starrer Son Of Sardaar collected Rs 10.72 crore from 2,000 screens in the country.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says it is the “best Diwali for Bollywood”.

“In mass circuits, Son Of Sardaar is ahead and at multiplexes, Jab Tak Hai Jaan takes a lead. As per early trends, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is ahead of Son Of Sardaar in India. But, both are winners at the box-office. This is the biggest and best Diwali for Bollywood. The business of Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar will be the biggest ever,” Taran Adarsh tweeted.

Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines, Mumbai, told IANS that both films are doing very well.

“Son Of Sardaar is doing well in single screens and Jab Tak Hai Jaan is doing well in multiplexes. Looking at the reports, I am sure Son Of Sardaar will pick up and do well in a couple of days,” he added.

There has been a lot of pre-release buzz around both Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar. Plus they have the advantage of festive occasion and extended weekend to mint more money.

Anant Verma, director and business head of DT Cinemas, told IANS: “Both the films have opened well with almost equal occupancy at our cinemas. We gave equal capacity and almost same number of shows to both. We are looking at a decent occupancy till Sunday. Friday morning shows will dip a little, but overall till Sunday all cinemas will do well. Families, youngsters and couples are coming to watch Son Of Sardaar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan .”

Produced by Aditya Chopra, late filmmakers Yash Chopra’s last directorial Jab Tak Hai Jaan has reportedly been made at a budget of Rsb50 crore, while director Ashwni Dhir’s Son Of Sardaar said to be costlier with Rs 80 crore expenses.

Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts predicts the films to cross Rs 100 crore collection mark.

“They have the potential to cross Rs 100 crore. Both the films opened at 90 per cent occupancy, which was expected and today both Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar are going houseful,” Sanjay Ghai told IANS.

No, it wont crash, because there are many attractive aspects to it for the non-discriminating viewers. Aditya is master at identifying the truly big ideas of fiction, from various sources . It is another matter that he screws them up so badly in execution, adding some deliberate crassness and titillation in good measure. That goes quite well with a lot of Indian audiences. This is what he did with Dead Poets Society / Mohabbatein, Autograph (Tamil) & Broken Flowers / Bachna e Haseenon. The double identity of RDBDJ was a wonderful device to explore what a woman wants – but was squanderd through this ‘ tujh mein rab dikhta hai’ cop out. Here this Jesus business by itself is a powerful idea explored in The End of an Affair., but treated here in cavalier fashion, just for kicks rather than any genuine engagement with the concept.

But as a said this basic premise with all the trappings og glamour and titillation is good enough for many. Unfortunately it is so shoddy that it will keep away a good many others. So a big hit it wont be. But neither will it crash.

    Movie Review
Defuse Bombs? That’s Nothing Next to Love
    By NICOLAS RAPOLD

Yash Chopra’s final film, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” (“Till My Last Breath”), raises the stakes on Bollywood romance to potentially explosive levels. The superstar Shah Rukh Khan plays Samar, an expert bomb defuser who hides behind sunglasses and nerves of steel in India, where he has fled after Meera (Katrina Kaif) breaks his heart in London.

How his past romance all went down is explained through a prolonged flashback involving amnesia, pacts with God, a hit and run, and a percussive warehouse-party dance number. Along the way there are sideline gigs as a busker, a fishmonger and a waiter. Once the film catches us up, a fresh complication arises when a sassy young intern from a TV show, Akira (Anushka Sharma), gets hooked on Samar while shooting a documentary on his work.

A love triangle develops that is as intricate and death-defying as a prisoner’s dilemma. Even though the film drags, the magic of Bollywood is that this story’s muddle of twists only clarifies the urgency behind the undying desires of all concerned parties. And beyond showing the requisite London landmarks, Mr. Chopra pans over earth and heavens in typically spectacular shots of Samar in Kashmir as he goes about his dangerous business. (Mr. Chopra, a Bollywood giant, died in October at 80.)

Mr. Khan charms and swaggers about, holding onto marquee status even in a post-amnesia hospital-bed scene that has him wearing an absurd nipple-tight shirt. Would that his co-star Ms. Kaif, who has great fun with a “Rent”-dress-code warehouse dance, didn’t have, at key moments, the expressiveness of pudding.

But when Akira flirts with Samar while he defuses a bomb on a bridge — from which they hang in harnesses — “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” reaches some new acme of oblivious romantic folly.

  84. The Vigil Idiot: Jab Tak Hai Jaan

November 15, 2012 10:02 am by Sahil Rizwan

What originality this film is, man! We have Shah Rukh Khan playing a romantic lead by the name of Samar Anand; Katrina Kaif playing Meera Thapar, an NRI who speaks accented Hindi; and Anushka Sharma playing Akira Rai who is—are you ready for this—a feisty girl from Delhi! Shocker, I know. But hey, actors get typecast all the time. As long as their roles are written well, right? Well, I wonder where all the costume money they saved on not giving pants to any of the women went… Because it sure as hell didn’t go to the script department.

  85. Saw the film today at Inox, was nearly 55-60 per cent full. The feeling I have is that the film is doing reasonably well, but clearly is no blockbuster success.

Personally I quite liked the film and I believe it will age well. I thought Shah Rukh was wonderful, very consistent and in character throughtout. This is one thing I have to hand him compared to the other Khans. As an actor I believe he has been the most effective and he tends to pitch his characters correctly, something which Aamir has not managed to do all the time.

The story too worked for me. I didnt find it puerile as some others found it…perhaps my expectations were lower. I found the story perfectly plausible, but was let down severely by having a weak actress in the lead. Now the central love story required passionate lovers – no matter what the makers tried – making Kat gyrate, having her wear off shoulders, innumerable smooches, she just doesn’t manage to elicit the slightest bit of oomph. That’s the problem here. Zero sexuality and chemistry…and this is no fault of SRK. This weakens the premise a lot. When Kat makes a re entry, and he couple reunites it should have given the audience goosebumps (remember Ash-Salman in Hum Dil, or SRK-Kajol in DDLJ) . That doesn’t happen because Kat is incredibly dull as an actress. She looks beautiful of course but she very listless. This is felt most in scenes where Anushka and she come together. The former’s performance throbs with life, and though she’s getting repetitive and Im no fan of her overt smugness, Anushka knows how to act, how to say her dialogues..and pull off her role with elan.

I didnt mind the coincidences so much. It doesn’t outrage your sense of logic any more than the average 70s Bolllywood film does. I found Fanaa a bit more incredulous in fact. JTHJ stays engaging throughout and there is always the curiosity to know what will happen next. The most admirable aspect of the film is SRK’s character. Within the span of the film his role still remains a bit shadowy, but there is the right illusion of depth to his character. JTHJ actually has a story that could well have been a novel, because there seems to be a lot in the characters and situations that is left unsaid. For example the crucial parting scene and its strange circumstances. It might have seemed quite plausible if one read it in a book, as much of the happenings are in the characters’ minds! There is complexity befitting a book. As a film, there are limitations and not everything gets executed well. More explaination was needed about SRK leaving too. So the film kind of seems a bit ambigious.

Music was not as fantastic as was expected from Rahman, but that one recurring music piece is glorious.

I enjoyed it overall. all said and done it had a fresh story, and did not insult my intelligence by any means.

    • thanks for your take Sandy.. great to get a longer note from you.. I too have long had the hunch (i.e. before release) that it would be more like a RNBDJ than anything else. Good opening numbers, not spectacular all things considered and then solid trending. Having said that precisely because the numbers are not massive it cannot afford a serious drop-off at any point. Not least because it doesn’t have any breathing space. SOS is there in any case but in a couple of weeks there’s another major release. Very few films add very substantially to the gross after the first 5-7 days these days and certainly not after the first 10 days. My guess is that even in the best guess scenario we’re looking at something in the 105-120 range here, depending on how it trends. Which wouldn’t be a bad number looking at all the factors but it’s fair to say that this also isn’t the optimal performance one expects from this kind of production (though it might trend much better than most 100 crore films to get there). But your estimation here seems the right one. This definitely doesn’t look like a blockbuster unless the trending surprises very much. Will add this that given SOS is doing well mostly in the single screens and that too more in Northern single screens and given that JTHJ isn’t doing much at all in these the overlap isn’t really hurting the latter as much as it might have. With OSO/Saawariya for example you had multiplexes into both in a big way (Saawariya had a strong weekend and then collapsed). So if JTHJ had either excited the audience more or had it been loved more I think it could have done a lot more even with SOS around. But again RNBDJ seems to be the best model here and actually the only three films where SRK has had big initials since KANK in 2006 are OSO and RA One. Both films were hyped to death. Nonetheless he excited the box office here. With the others (RNBDJ, MNIK, JTHJ) I would say the initials have been solid but not fantastic. Which isn’t a problem except if you are SRK still trying to match the biggest days of your strongest peers. I’d repeat that JTHJ has no latitude to have very weak days in this first 7 day run or so.

    • Sandy, several people have noted that JTHJ is eerily reminiscent (i.e., is “heavily inspired” from) of the Graham Greene novel End of the Affair, so perhaps that’s why you felt so many times that the proceedings were better suited to a novel than a film.

As for comparing, well that’s because I believe their stardom is the still the most comparable. Both intensely vie for popularity and to do quality films. Don’t see anyone else in that league. Their journey to superstardom has not been alike certainly, but it is still the closest one can get in our generation. Certainly I will not bring in Salman because he’s running a different race.

Analysis of anything will always include comparisons of one kind or the other, especially that which can be equated. I don’t say SRK is the better actor necessarily. His screen presence exudes more warmth than Aamir perhaps, but both are capable of very fine performances. Just that I have not been so enthused with Aamir as an actor off late. As we know he makes up for it with sharp film choices, and has been the reason for Hindi cinema getting a few extraordinary cinematic triumphs but that is a different argument.

This isn’t anything strange or silly as some seem to think. It is as old as religion itself. The oldest form of bargaining.
    “God if I get this/you do this for me…..then I will….”

THere are various forms of it, mannat, vardan, kasam (oath).
People are known to visit the shrine in Ajmer, varous holy places and temples, Saldhana etc for this.
Katrina herself is known to have visited Ajmer before the release of her films.
Older films had a lot of such sentiments, it’s only now it seems not to be cool to show in films, by some …even though the film industry indulges a lot in this.

So what’s so strange? What’s so ‘copying foreign film’ about it? Is it because it is ‘Jesus’? In christianity there are saints for almost all your wishes to whom you can pray (talking to god) and promise something.

People should always look within 😉 and not always at Hollywood.

I think OG just loves to bracket people who even try to talk about regionalism/communalism in films or any such stuff. It is strange but when I talked about excessive ‘Punjabization’ in films when film-makers try to display/push-in Punjabi atmospherics even when it is not required in the film, OG asked me if I was a Shiv Sainik. I explained further that I was only talking of film-makers who think — ‘family’ atmosphere needs to be captured? Let’s head to Punjab..

As people need to travel longer distances to work or for leisure, there has been a rapid rise in the vehicular traffic, especially as public transport systems in India’s cities have been unable to cater to the rising demand. There is an annual 15% rise in the passenger-km that Indians travel, and a 10% increase in the sale of vehicles particularly cars to meet the requirement, according to official data. Transport has become one of the chief sources of rising emission.

the reason for the disclaimer was because it was taken from the website of sitting chief minister of the state.

And u can say anything about the environment, i only say one thing to that : NO COMMENTS.

The only reason of video was the project. Which i found interesting and showed functioning of a project, and it can be anywehre in the world, any country, any state and any place… it doesnt make difference.

Just compare it with the rest of the states of India where there is no discipline and worthwhile progress being made even in basic infrastructure like good roads, drinking water and electricity supply.

      • As I have said here in other thread. We took Hollywood way of delivering dialogues in 30-50s along with dance and musical numbers (which probably came from theatre way of acting). We never changed; we added few things and cultural things but basic format remained the same. Our heroes still mouth dialogues as if the other person is 50 meters away. We now call it Bollywood but other countries have changed to more subtle form. We haven’t!

That’s their character. You can call it subtle if you like.
The thing that struck me when I first came to this country was how they could hold a heated political discussion without raising their voices.
Katrina has that body language and expressions.

It wouldn’t suit the Indian character. I saw a film once The Warrior with Imran Khan. There the subtleties looked out of place. The glances, a light smile flickering on the lips, a slight turn of the head, looking into the distance, crushing something in the hand, breaking a piece of twig in the hand to express a tumutous heart, was all fine…and so alien.
OK the above scenes are not all from The Warrior, I went general after a while, though they could be all there too, I’m sure.

If you like the above good for you.
I like the non subtleties (which doesn’t mean crassness)…good for me.

Good point Oldgold –about Switzerland & also about Katrina –there IS a certain ‘serenity’ in the Swiss ambience
Even in the interactions, have always found Swiss a bit mellow n serene (though formal)
Katrina has a certain ‘balance’ & sense of ‘proportion’ that makes one ignore the gross misgivings in her acting, diction

        • No. I am talking about domain within which the movie is set; things should be consistent. I for one like many mindless action movies. Not suggesting they are good. But they are cogent within that framework. So when you are trying to show emotional drama, they should be real and more realistic than an action movie.

          Like

        • Agreed again.. the pitch and scale of masala cinema for example was more in keeping with a certain moment in Indian cultural life. Today the same would have to be reinvented. The legacy of this cinema is a very rich one but it cannot simply be duplicated in very different contexts. Much as there is something to learn from the figure of the angry young man but this doesn’t meant that you start making films as if it’s still 1978! To use a more literary example Dickens is great but you don’t write like Dickens in the 20th century though you can certainly learn from him. No matter how much one admires RD Burman one cannot suddenly start composing music that sounds exactly like his. The older work retains its force, one can watch Awara today and be amazed by its achievement but one cannot repeat in in any easy way.

I am the greatest supporter of the unique tradition that Indian commercial cinema offers but it’s a mistake to see past decades as somehow all the same because they all offered song and dance and so forth. There are dramatic differences and in each case, whether for better or worse, there were adjustments being made relative to the larger cultural contexts. So again I do agree with you. In fact you come at this whole problem that I often lament about from a different perhaps more interesting vantage point. One of the problems with being ‘disconnected’ from larger societal impulses or having an extremely cramped view of the same is that one starts making cinema that operates in a bubble. Obviously commercial cinema is never realistic. Police inspectors never lived in the sorts of houses they inhabited in commercial movies once upon a time. But there was a certain truth to the world of those films. People mistakenly believe ‘realism’ to be the same as ‘truth’. They are completely different things. This is a different debate but the point in any case is that today there is no ‘truth’ in most films. And this again gets to your point. In a vacuum you can make certain choices that make for an entertaining film, that are ideologically on the right side of their key audiences but are otherwise ‘untrue’ efforts and hence some of the gesturality and so forth associated with these works also rings hollow beyond a point.

A typical Indian (not NRI) isn’t subtle in expressing his/her emotion of sorrow, love (of any kind), in fact ANYTHING. That’s the first thing that hits you when you get out of the airport.

Yes, Indian ‘art’ films have used this method, and I ‘have’ liked some, but even there it gets as repetitive as the expressing of it more obviously in the mainstream films.

Lastly it is what you can relate to.

Now that statement from Ricky was not very respectful towards women but the fact remains that Salman has ‘bedded’ all those ladies and yet females in India are crazy abt Salman inspite of his ‘perceived’ attitude towards them. And it’s a common perception amongst men that a woman who is a ‘sloppy second’ is not as interesting as a pure, untouched one- btw i am not saying that this view is right but that this view very much exists

          Like

        • Just because something is a common belief, it doesn’t mean one should not challenge its validity and hypocrisy. In any case, in Europe today, virginity is certainly not perceived as essential for a ‘good’ woman. It’s only in the more conservative Asian/ Middle-Eastern societies that this quality is idealized as a necessary virtue for a woman. So as a 21st century British comedian, Ricky is not echoing a value that is widely-held within his cultural at all.
Also, its one think for a comedian (who is known for his politically incorrect, provocative style) to make that comment in jest, and a completely different thing for somebody to casually throw this quote into a conversation to illustrate why certain actresses are undesirable and it doesn’t matter if one gets to kiss them.
Just as Salman is popular with the women despite his many relationships, Katrina is also popular with men despite her sleazy, shadowy past, B-grade movies, relationship with a much older superstar etc, so it’s not only women who overlook these things and go crazy for a man, even in a society as conservative as India.

That he will live forever? Why riot in case a natural and normal thing for every human being also happens to BT?

        • This whole ridiculous discussion started because some immature fans were chortling about SRK getting his “revenge” on Salman by kissing his ex-girlfriend on screen. There is so much to object to in that itself, that I’m surprised that that original idiocy has gone unchallenged. First, it conflates on screen acting with off screen personal behavior, which is not true. Then, it treats a woman as a property that can be “owned” by a man, either the present one who is kissing her on screen, or the past one with whom she had a relationship. Where is Ami’s righteous indignation at this characterization? Why is Katrina a passive victim in this scenario? We need to challenge those idiots who get their titillation by equating the actions of a cinematic performance into a personal salacious behavior, and then imagine some undefined rivalry that requires “revenge”, by using a woman sexually. How revolting is this mindset? This is exactly the same mindset that leads to rape being used a weapon of war in many locations in the world, including in India. Let us focus on that, not on the reaction to the words of an imaginary character in a work of fiction. I find all this talk of “bedding” a woman itself disrespectful to those women, who were all free agents and full participants in the decisions they made.

Excellent comment SM- but the puerile fans who tweeted about SRK kissing Katrina are not even on this blog- and they would not be able to read any of my comments- so I don’t see the point in voicing my righteous indignation against their words.

    • There is an explanation for that sm. Whether BT dies a natural or unnatural death, there will be people who throw stones and damage public property. That is because they now have a chance to vent their frustrations of their miserable lives and walk away scot-free because for that brief period democracy will be replaced by mobocracy. (You can refer Sunil Dutt’s introduction scene at the railway station in Munnabhai MBBS ..)

In Bangalore, Dr. Rajkumar died at the age of 76 very peacefully and painless in his sleep. Bangalore burned for 1 week. They had also done the same thing when Veerappan kidnapped him. Instead of being thankful that their idol passed away peacefully, they acted thanklessly and brought the city to its knees.

      • Yes, I was actually thinking of what happened after Raj Kumar died. I couldn’t understand that, either. Basically in India the idea of destroying public property to express frustration (of any sort) seems to be too deeply engrained. I remember a long time ago, a friend from Kolkutta (when it was still Calcutta 🙂 ) joking about how excitable Bengalis were, and said, to give an example, “If a bus doesn’t come on time, or doesn’t come at all, forcing them to wait, then they’ll burn the next bus that comes.” I said, “But how will that help them, since their need was for a bus to get wherever they were going?” And he said, “Ah, nobody thinks of that!” I guess this is similar.

I found the quote from one Delhi distributor interesting, where he says that Talaash was originally scheduled to release in June, and the theaters had signed a two week agreement then, so now they will have to stick to it. My question is, why? If the producers want to hold exhibitors to an agreement, shouldn’t they also be held accountable to live up to their part of the agreement, i.e., stick to the announced release date? If one party defaults on their part, doesn’t that make the agreement null and void?

Film did well on opening day with 15 cr nett collections. Film though did not perform as per expectations on 3rd day with collections of 19.50 cr nett. Film is hurting badly with lack of good numbers from north and single screens too failed to perform upto the mark in Central India.

Film has collected 15.50 cr nett on Thursday as per early estimates and this figure can vary depending upon performance of film in late evning and night shows. This is a good figure for the film considering the competition.

Film managed good numbers mainly due to Mumbai, Mysore,West Bengal and Nizam. Overseas is as usual untouched territory for Shahrukh Khan. Film has already taken a record breaking opening in New zealand beating even Hollywood releases there this week. And as per early reports, in Pakistan too film looks to collect 25 lakhs on opening day.

Film should cross or touch 80-85 cr nett in 6 day weekend and worldwide collectiosn of 130 cr. The trend of film’s box office performance from Monday onwards will decide film’s fate. At the moment both the films are enjoying their own territories.

    • so expect BOI to be around 12-13cr for JTHJ for 3rd day…think this film will end up around 110-115cr…SRK’s best is RaOne with 115cr or so? he’s stuck in that zone.

The important point which most of the members don’t want to discuss is the Diwali day effect. Last year when Ra one opened low on the Diwali day and the trade analysts explained the diwali effect on the collections most of the ppl were criticizing them giving the same old lame excuse that trade ppl are biased towards SRK.

This year Diwali day effect theory was proved not by one movie but both the movies. Last year also for Ra one highest collection was in the 2nd day and this year also the same thing happened for both the movies. 3rd collections will also make it quite clear.

I would love to check Ra one’s BO thread again to check those expert comments criticizing BOI…

SON OF SARDAAR Continues To Score On Day Three

“Son Of Sardaar” collecting good numbers from certain territories but the good thing is that its holding up pretty well. Film is completely outstanding in places like interiors of Gujarat, UP and Central India. It is better than JTHJ in all these places consistently.

But then this is the half part of story. Film dropped in metros and that too in high end mutiplexes. That means film has not much appeal in these areas. South and West Bengal are almost out of question and overseas is a big struggle after full fledge release of JTHJ.

Film collected 26.5 cr nett in 2 days and asper early estimates 3rd day easily looks to finish around 12 cr nett. Film might end up with little higher amount depending upon how night shows perform. Film will cross 70 cr nett over the weekend but 75 as well as 100 cr do not look possible.

Film is garnering praise from few quarters for its good performance but how producers going to make money is the biggest question for the film to answer.

  113. So i saw Chittagong (the film dealing with the same topic as KHJJS- the Chittagong Uprising) yesterday. It’s an admirable effort and despite some rough edges the film was a moving experience. Now i had liked the Gowarikar film a fair bit (it certainly deserved a better critical reception) but Chittagong is easily the better film- not only is it better acted but is also more energetic .And its biggest asset is that it is told thru the schoolboy’s perspective (he is the protagonist and not surjo sen)

      • Please do expand, Saurabh. I saw Amu, the earlier film made by this same team, about the 1984 massacre of Sikhs in Delhi after Indira Gandhi’s assassination, and it was also a very impressive film. (My only complaint was how much they had to tone down the truth in order to get a theater release in India.)

I hope u are never accused of being communal.

Anyways i am leaving the blog, as i cant accept such allegations. Its not in me, to accept allegations of being “communal”.

It’s better for me to stay away.

    • Rooney, please don’t leave the blog. I’m not saying this from a personal perspective of liking your contributions, but from the perspective of principle. So far one person has accused you of being communal. If you are not (which I don’t think you are), you need to stay and challenge that person to prove or withdraw those accusations. Leaving would merely reinforce that kind of irresponsible behavior. As a lawyer admitted to the bar, you have a responsibility to fight for the truth inside and outside the court, and I know you take that responsibility seriously. By leaving, you allow the ignorant and the frivolous to continue unchecked in their unacceptable behavior. So please reconsider.

It’s only one person here who has this opinion of you and even if you do not wish to dignify such an unreasonable accusation with a response, you could just ignore the person who made this remark and continue interacting with the rest of us, who happent to appreciate your comments.

      • I completely agree with ur sentiment, but neither this is the right cause, nor the cause worth spending time on. Better fights out there in the world to be fought on far more essential issues.

Listen i dont want to make an issue out of a non-issue, various people have different views on same matter, i joined the blog as College student and it was fun, but after being in public life day in day out, as an officer of the court, i find discussions where in allegations are made personally quite strange. That was one of the reasons that during quite some time, i was being just a visitor of the blog, without active participation. This Diwali I was free and tried to indulge in some discussion, but I find words like communal etc hard to digest, and especially from the part of the world i come from, what i have seen. I am sure human beings have such tendency to go like that, even i guess i might have made same error if any i regret it, but i want to learn to stay away from it.

Neither I have issues with Old Gold, nor i believe in proving someone wrong. I dont like to put myself on trial, just because someone has imagination without knowing someone personally to determine that person as communal.

“Leaving would merely reinforce that kind of irresponsible behavior. As a lawyer admitted to the bar, you have a responsibility to fight for the truth inside and outside the court, and I know you take that responsibility seriously. ”

Fight for truth needs vigour elsewhere and for better people who really need it, the poor, the innocent, and people who are really in deep trouble, dont mind allegations on me, yesterday i took it seriously now i am seeing the funny side, and thus the idea of leaving. Leaving as in going back to visitor side, and a odd comment here and there, as i feel else the energy is wasted for wrong purpose.

Actually i am quite obliged to OldGold, as if she wouldnt have done so, i wouldnt have realised the futileness of all this. I like to feel there is purpose/reason for everything and looking at brighter side. So i guess by leaving i just meant being more a visitor which i had preferred lately.

ps: (not that i agree but … ) One of my friend/mentor always says that being a lawyer it’s important you fight for people and always for people and not for yourself, or for your fights, as neither there’s money in it nor it is worth the time and effort.

        • Rooney, thanks for your comprehensive response.

I won’t belabor the point, but let me just say, in my experience, there is no such thing as issues that don’t matter. Leaving “small” untruths unchallenged leads to having more and more “small” untruths coalesce into “big”, even humongous untruths, that then need a humongous fight to overcome, and they may not be overcome. So it’s better to correct every misrepresented fact at an early stage. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Martin Luther King’s quote: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The same thing applies to truth.

The second point I want to make is that I have seen among Indians this belief that to “fight for yourself” is somehow demeaning, and that others should magically (or otherwise) appreciate your true worth. This attitude even persisted at the highest levels of government, and led to many unfortunate policy decisions in the past. So I don’t think you should dismiss personal charges against you so easily. True, it would not be remunerative, but then, if you are perceived to be untrue, untrustworthy, or unfair (as in being communal), it would also affect how willing people are to come to you to fight on their behalf. Just some food for thought.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to go on at length. It’s your decision, and I hope we can continue to enjoy the pleasure of your virtual company. 🙂

I generally don’t comment because I don’t want to get into protracted discussions (especially I don’t want to get into “debate” with Satyam! 🙂 ) I just felt that this was a very important point and didn’t want you to leave for that reason. About not having time/energy I fully understand and agree. I’m glad you’ll be sticking around.

  115. I read the synopsis of The End Of The Affair and yes the basis premise of Katrina trading her love for exhange of her lover’s life is picked up from there. But the tone seems a bit different with a thriller element to it. Also Katrina’s character in the book has more complexity and shades. She’s married to a perfectly decent guy whom she cannot come to love. She gets involved with a lover and is living in guilt. His accident she takes as a warning from God of their ‘wrong-doing’ and hence give him up in exchange of his life. The whole thing perfectly falls in place. This is missing in JTHJ so eveything becomes a bit vague and unconvincing.
Also, an extra marital affair was more likely to be looked upon as sin in the 30s when the book was written. Hence the concept makes far more sense. Graham Green’s novels are all about sin and redemption. In JTHJ, there is no ‘sin’ as Katrina is not married, so the lovers’ seperation requires you to take a monster leap of faith.
