Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger (Andrea Riseborough) from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

The potential sci-fi blockbuster movie also stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Olga Kurylenko, Melissa Leo and Morgan Freeman. The Movie is scheduled for release on April 19, 2013.

  2. Though I find the whole post-apocalypse genre fairly stale at this point I do like the poster here.

    • Yes Antya. You and Alex should get over the ‘height’ thingy. I am getting a feeling that you prefer only beef-cakes to save the Earth. Even Alex resorts to calling our 3 Khans ‘midgets’ and simultaneously props-up the great HR.

In fact, I would welcome this. I would love for Jack Black or Woody Allen to save the world and for Rajpal Yadav to take on India’s laughable excuse of a filmkraft ‘super-hero’ called Crassss..

Tom Cruise, to me, is a terrific star-actor. Of course, I surely agree that the ‘star’ quotient is better represented by him. He is an actor that knows his strengths and weaknesses. He NEVER tries to project himself as a great actor. He sticks to what he is good at and delivers block-busters wonderfully. I just love this guy for his consistency. And I am a big fan of his. Not gonna miss JACK REACHER and this one. In fact, I never miss any TOM CRUISE movie at all. He has also showed his acting mettle (BORN ON THE 4TH OF JULY; JERRY MAGUIRE).

And as age is ravaging him, he has made a terrific decision of sticking to genres where the ‘good-looks’ factor is of minimal importance.

Love him for what he is..

      • Antya has said several times before that she doesn’t appreciate conventionally handsome looks, and even criticized Farhan’s muscular look in BMB, so the beefcake comment is a little uncalled for.

And in any case, just out of curiosity, would you also like to see Chitrangadha Singh replaced by Lilette Dubey or Scarlett Johanesson switched with Melissa McCarthy?

        • thanks for sticking up for me ami 🙂
it’s nice for people to comment while making assumptions about my ideas and preferences.
yes, i don’t care about looks in general. but there has to be some consistency at least in the context of a genre. there is a reason you need certain physical characteristics when enlisting in police, army etc. all over the world, because in those situations, it does matter. that’s why there was so much criticism when he was cast in jack reacher. i don’t personally care about it but fans of the work were upset and thought cruise is miscast here. not to mention, the promos look meh.
anyways, i can overlook these things in films and with actors i do enjoy. but cruise is a two-trick pony 10 years past his prime (again, as an actor, not actual age). i do believe he is not a bad actor but he needed to branch out into more character driven performances and roles and would have done better. how is he picking things where age does not matter? in fact, it’s the opposite. he is a megalomaniac who wants to constantly project this action hero/rockstar/macho image. i always preferred him in roles where he is the raging asshole he is in real life – magnolia, collateral damage etc. loved his small role in tropic thunder.

        • I would love the switch-over..But it does depend on what you are seeing right? In that case, TC cannot even be Ethan Hunt!! He has smashed all records with his MI series. Nobody complained of his height and physical conditions though it is no Pandora’s secret that secret agents need to be physically fit, agile, and quick-thinking.

All I am saying is, in certain genres (non-biopic ones), one doesn’t have to be THAT particular about physicality. Since Antya started off her comment with the height factor, I thought she was using it as a pre-requisite for doing such movies..I did not mean that she has an unwavering ‘history’ of preferring beef-cakes

And I am not penalizing HR for his looks – nobody can. I brought it up here because it was in the paani thread that Alex boasted about HR’s box-office superiority when it came to the 3 ‘midget’ Khans. I found this quite unnecessary and ridiculous especially coming to the average height of the Indian male. Above 6′ is not an average thing in India but an outlier..

        • In any case, why this prejudice against good-looking men? I mean, I’m female and I can still appreicate good-looking women without feeling bitter or insecure about it- I’m a huge Deepika fan, primarily because of how gorgeous/ charming I find her, and I’ve often posted pictures of actresses that I found striking/ beautiful on SS (I actually posted 2 photos of Chitrangadha and Olga on this thread, but the comment is not approved yet). There’s no need to run down HR just because he’s a handsome man.

Tom cruise has been a guilty pleasure for me
Yes– Inspite of his length/height (well pointed though)
Actually take him /his starpower out and this will become a lesser project.
I’m getting a Prometheus-ish vibe but I feel that his team are better in the sci-fi genre than many

    • i have no problem with his height, was only being sarcastic. i meant, this crap again? really?
he is not even one of the 20 biggest names in hw anymore, does not have the ongoing prestige and goodwill of a hanks and is quite repetitive in terms of work. anyways, i always liked him better in small doses.
i’ll take arnold and bruce willis saving the day in terminator or die hard over cruise’s entire career of ‘world saving’ shenanigans. he is about as exciting as that 2 month old piece of bread you find in the back of the refrigerator when you are looking for something else. none of these upcoming projects look very interesting, will probably do ok since there is a market for this but i’ll be surprised if they turn out outstanding.

      • yes tanya –actually i would have preferred a taller cruise—and yeah arnie is better on the world saving expeditions
but tom cruise to me has his own star charisma (even now)
and unlike arnie/willis, he can switch genres to some extent atleast.
As for hanks–he is one of my favorites–when u end up liking even larry crowne, it means somehintg lol

  8. Those who think Cruise does not work as a star, they need to see Top Gun again. There are only 3 TRUE stars left in hwood- cruise, Damon and Cage. And for those who doubt his acting abilities should revisit On The 4th Of July as well as Jerry Maguire

Take a look…Quentin is (apparently then, DJANGO is 2.45 hours long), as usual, at his extroverted best..And Gus is quite the opposite..

      • Again, this is a completely unnecessary comment. It’s one thing to mock at America’s limited world view, but it’s in very bad taste to make a snide remark about a tragic terrorist attack that devastated so many innocent citizens in the country (after which they have taken extensive security measures and managed to ensure that a repeat does not happen, good on them).

First they had this phobia about the erstwhile USSR. The contemporary politics are too sensitive and thus they try to find natural disasters, aliens as ending their world and thus they venture into this larger than life cinema. This kind of cinema is visually stunning and entertaining in its own way. Many in other parts of the world will rather say that they have to save themselves from the greatest saviour of the world!
