  2. Hmmm–as much as I like hritik and am sort of keen to see now far He can take this franchise single handedly just on the basis of his stardom, I’m beggining to get a bit curious of the shenanigans of the son-dad combo
Lately they have gone ‘underground’– which is usually a good thing (but not always)…
Will have to see the first look to assess this one…
Btw who is the heroine here (if any?)..

    • there seems to be this 190-200 crore no man’s land where two recent films despite their different trajectories seem to have perished. ETT of course dropped very heavily after a historic start. YJHD will assuredly not cross this milestone either. And this when it’s been 3.5 years since 3I! So films aren’t crossing that number even in absolute terms! So even if a film like Krrish or D3 do this one should hardly celebrate it unless of course these films go way above and beyond 200 crores. But yes Krrish 3 is the next film to have a real short at this target. Put differently if it matches the success of the previous two films in the franchise it should be able to do this. if not it must be considered a disappointment. The same goes for D3.

No ‘relay-race’ franchise wherein the previous equity from HRitik roshan himself also adds onto dhoom3!!

A plain cheesy tired franchise with a director well past his ‘prime time’ and certainly not amongst the ‘exciting new bunch’ of ‘happening directors’

A genre (sci-fi/superhero) which has never worked in Bollywood
        Even Bra-1 failed,,,

        But
Non hritk fans including Satyam are expecting /predicting 200cr to break even
And some are saying–“the first film to cross 3I number this year”

What is finally does is a different matter (& I have doubts till I see the promos etc)

Shows the box office force of hritik Roshan in the right project….

I’m not like aamir fans who receded to make 80 crores Aamirs ta-laash respectable !!!–

          I go on record—
Will be disappointed if HR doesn’t break 3idiots with this one–forget Yjhd !!!
Though haven’t seen the promos yet so cant say & it’s not easy–this ones not a given success unlike other Kmg,krish
But that doesn’t mean–one has to change the target (as in talaash and many other such flicks)

As I said–the theme here is
          Go for the jugular !!

        • yes but breaking 3I’s number in absolute terms almost 4 years later hardly deserves a medal when it the second sequel in a very successful franchise! The film should be doing way more than that.

By the way, and I know this might come as a shock, but the genres of Krrish and Talaash are just a bit different.

        • Everyone knows of ‘inflation adjusted figures’ but have already mentioned the problems with ‘limitless extrapolation’ and ‘like for like’ comparison in this context. Yeah it should theoretically do more than 3I (& dhoom3 should do much much more than 3i) but till that happens, it remains a hypothetical figure–have gone in detail with that-dont have the links at hand again…
The use of three idiots landmark ‘selectively’ is also problematic.

As for ta-laash, have liked Aamirs performance and have given a lot of leeway to the ‘genre factor’–bit how much is the question!!
Though having aamir after a long gap with rani and Kareena in a prostitute get up in a bar song and titillating posturing with a ‘cop aamir’ isn’t really ‘experimental’
The sheer cover up for the obvious ‘relative failure’ of talaash (box office wise) is somewhat shameful.
Don’t wanna dwell in detail on that–but where’s your ‘trending’ card vis a vis talaash
That’s the point–in this case, it didn’t trend well, so suddenly it ceases to be an issue?? …anyhow…

        • Typo-‘precedent’
So in a ways krish franchise was ‘genre defining’ in Bollywood and created a space for such projects to be conceptualised. Though as bra1 realised its not easy..
Ps: dhoom3 has it much easier–a big star aamir who ensures a good script, another big star katrina, a relative star (technically) abhishrek, a big banner yashraj, the franchise taking over steam form where hritik left it last and so on..,
          That’s why krish3 is so tricky…
I think the roshans have taken too much upon themselves, this may break them but its good to see this grit…
Only further promos will show where this goes though…

  6. Well..I think its a ‘back to the learning curve’ kinda thing…because we have an updated approach with the CGI stuff. whomever is contributing to that will have more input than the last time which was primarily to me a trial run..which suceeded enough to try it again. But all that being said BW seems to be entering into that arena where the computer plays a large part * I know ..I know SRK does his own stunts..* Whether or not the Crore Club bar is met seems a moot point ..at least to me…I think theyre testing the waters and trying to break new ground..So we’ll see 🙂

    Like

    • Incidentally as u pointed out —in krish3–srk does have a role indirectly because the CGI is done by his firm red chillies–which may good or bad –since their first venture was (b)ra1 haha…

Btw who is the heroine here?? No mention …
Ps: no hiding behind/under the skirts of ms deeps or ms Kats here for hritik … Te expectations are sky high, nothing less will be accepted & he has to deliver without any support from elsewhere…
On a related note–this ‘3 idiots’ monkey which some here use selectively to prop up Aamirs case–wasn’t aamir alone.
Hirani s own credentials after munnabhai series, chopras and the brilliantly presented film itself was clearly a much superior effort quality wise than the rest of the fare.
If aamir was the only/biggest factor, talaash wouldn’t need all sorts of ‘genre factor’ excuses to explain the poor numbers/trending!!! Like some sensible aamir fans who prescribed 150 cr+ for talaash (accounting for the genre!), the others shouldn’t be indulging in this ‘coverup’.
It also brings to my earlier ‘2 piece bikini’ analogy about the ‘initial vs trending’ games played regularly …
Ps: have guts and honesty folks–admit when something’s done well or not so well…it won’t harm aamir or any of your idols
The only thing such ‘games’ hamper is ones own ‘credibility’ and ‘objectivity’ –talaash is just one example here 🙂

  8. I’m sure Krrish3 will do well, but it is hard to escape the conclusion that Hrithik’s stardom has stagnated: he comes up with a big one every few years, and is pretty much absent “from the scene” in between, and not in a way that generates buzz (a la Aamir). Agneepath didn’t have much of an afterglow, the less said about Guzaarish the better, and on terrain like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara he seems too old and outdone by younger, fresher colleagues. A decade ago it seemed he would join the ranks of the biggest stars, but today the older stars like Aamir, Salman are going strong; SRK is middling but has a base; while Ranbir has leapfrogged Hrithik in terms of the younger audience’s affections.

Had it been any other hero in Bollywood–this would have been a non-starter –that’s the point .,,
But hritk has to make this work–the stakes are higher & it’s trickier…

This is the stupidest argument I ever heard of Hritik was the only factor for the the success of KMG and Krissh, why did Guazaarish and Kites had such low gross and bad trending?

Come on, no film is a success because of any one person or any one factor.

And its not about inflation. The plain fact is doing 200 cr in a year when the next best film does less than 100 cr and only film had done 100cr the year before, is different from doing 200 cr in a year when two films have already crossed 100cr and one nearly touched 200cr and there have been 5 films over 100cr.

I mean this is so obvious that it is not worth discussing and wasting time.

Yes 3I did 200 cr because it was fantastic film. And yes, Aamir is in a different league precisely because he does fantastic films time and again.

The first part of your sentence is correct, the second part is not. It very much needed Aamir to get where it did. After all Munnabhai 1 and 2 which many consider better than 3 idiots did only 35 and 70 cr .

And when I say 3 I was a fantastic film, it is aamir among the other key contributors who made it a fantastic film.

The whole film deoended on the audience buying in to the mystique of Rancho. And Aamir made it happen, Saying another cator could fo it is like saying Krissh could have been done by Salman or ETT could have been done by Aamir. Of course, they could have been. We just don’t know. What we do know is that the stars in these films delivered.

I don’t believe in ‘leniency’ to icons
If people like aamir and hritik want to live up to their repetitive reputations–there’s NO escape
They HAVE to deliver when others can’t –Atleast where it matters.
I have repeated earlier–Aamirs real test came in talaash –he succeeded only partly –he HIMSELF has admitted publically that there were lapses and he will learn from talaash–unsure why his fans don’t admit!!!
Aamir can’t rest on three idiots laurels his whole life–just bcos he shrewdly chooses to hide and not get exposed to the vagaries of public taste for a full three four years!!!! One can smell a rat here.

      As for hritik–
The most stringent standards should be imposed on him for krish3–atleast 175+, towards 200 atleast …
      Let him fail–I don’t care!!!
But let’s not do this ‘cover up’ and changing ‘parameters’ to defend them.
There’s a reason why they are rated above the akshays and e ajays—they HAVE to keep proving it

Ideaunique: “none of bhagat’s novels have done well when adapted to films except – 3ps – kaipo che was a below average stuff / hello was a disaster” Not true. Hello is as big a success an Atul Agnihotri directed film with Sohali as a lead can get. It was so pathetically directed that the 8 odd crores it got was due to the base material. Kai Po Che is a bonafide HIT according to all BO sites. A serious film with total newcomers garnering 50 cr has to owe a lot to the script. Even Raanjhanaa is partly inspred by REvolution 2020.

Of course 3 Idiots was something else and for that Aaamir and Hirani , and to some extent Abhijat Joshi, deserve equal credit.

But, I just dont think this franchise has much left in it. If it doesnt cross 3I or YJHD, it wont be becuase of HR not being that big a BO force but because of the material. I wouldnt put it past Rakesh Roshan to surprise us but I wont be holding my breath. I liked KMG quite a bit but Krrish looked kind of dated and fatigued.

    • I am more optimistic about this one. Each film in the previous franchise combined the multiplex and small center audiences in a big way, specially the latter. This is also the marquee deal for Hrithik. This is really what the audience wants him to do – dances, stunts, body, in some order. So this franchise allows him to do all of this convincingly, which is to say in a narrative where it doesn’t seem forced. Now the only question is whether Roshan (Sr) can upgrade the franchise enough to reflect everything that has happened in the past seven years but nonetheless retain the more cheesy aspects of his brand of cinema. The thing is that people like watching Hrithik in this sort of deal so even the cheese barrier can be overcome to a great extent. 150 though wouldn’t be enough for this one unless it doesn’t get an absolutely super start which is unlikely.

The super hero flick starring Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles has Vivek Oberoi playing the role of a villain by name ‘Kaal’.

“On August 5, everyone will get a glimpse of what we have made. We had a lot of VFX effects in Krrish as well. But, we went all the way to Chennai for that. This time we did it in the city and hence the extra security. We didn’t want the look to be out before the trailer launch,” Mumbai Mirror quoted the director of the movie and Hrithik’s father Rakesh Roshan as saying while announcing the launch of the trailer.

“The first look often decides the fate of the film and I am curious to see the reaction of the people,” he added.

According to reports, Hrithik, who is recovering from a brain surgery he underwent last month to remove a blood clot, will attend the trailer launch event of the movie. Speaking about the actor’s health, Rakesh said that he is recovering fast.

    FOLLOW US

Hrithik will be seen playing triple roles including Rohit (Krrish’s father), Krishna (The alter ego of Krrish) and Krrish (the superhero) in the movie.

Hinting a twist in Priyanka’s role in the movie, Rakesh said, “You will see Priyanka in two avatars. She plays Krishna’s wife but suddenly her character changes.”

“Krrish 3” also stars actress Kangana Ranaut, who plays the character of a mutant,

Lauding Vivek Oberoi for his potential as an actor, Rakesh said, “That guy is such a fine actor. But he is yet to get his due.”

“Krrish 3”, which is a sequel to 2006 movie “Krrish”, is set to hit the screens on 3 November.

  28. Think Krrish has created instant interest. Which is different from big films which get big initials. In the latter instance everyone shows up as it is simply the thing to do. A variety of big films get big initials. Somewhat lower than this the initials are lower (still significant) but the same principle is at work. It’s relatively hard to find big films where people are more genuinely interested as well. For whatever reason. I’m pretty confident this Krrish has interested more people than perhaps even the previous one. This ought to be somewhat surprising as it’s appearing seven years after the previous one and so on. But I think that in addition to the obvious (Hrithik doing the role that is most quintessential for him in certain branding ways.. a certain old school ‘shiny-gleaming’ superhero a la a traditional sense of Superman) the film promises something relatively genuine in an age where big films are essentially extended trailers and completely soulless. Rakesh Roshan has his cheese, the films could hardly be considered sophisticated in any sense, and yes this current film seems to have borrowed a bit from a number of Hollywood films released over the last seven years so that with every important image one spots something familiar. Nonetheless there is something genuine to the mix. Which is the idea of a credible Indian superhero connected to the past (so for instance the first half of the previous Krrish could have been out of a cheesy 60s film) and hence rooted in specific ways but also fulfilling this desire of the new global Indian (in the second half Krrish goes to Singapore and ‘saves the world’) and so on. The Hollywood template is then readjusted for all of this. This is in many ways the classic example of the ‘colonized’ striking back. So yes it looks like a pale imitation of Hollywood but this is the point! It could not be any other way. The ’empire’ must be challenged on its own terms. In an odd sense the krrish attempt within this post-colonial discourse is much more genuine than many of the more high end products out of Bollywood that attempt something similar. Because most of those films even when better than the rest are just clones (something like Barfi for instance) whereas Krissh does something more with this ‘burden’. All of this doesn’t mean I’m overrating Krrish by any means. This is ultimately fairly mediocre fare that is kept engaging by Rakesh Roshan’s story-telling and of course Hrithik’s presence. And the SFX can never completely impress on their own without enough imagination added to the mix (something that Shankar had in droves in Enthiran and something which Rakesh Roshan has never had!) because there’s always the ‘hey-this-is-pretty-good-for-India’ tag attached to such films. So I’m not overestimating Krrish’s merits but I do think there’s something interesting going on here. Of course it’s entirely possible that in trying to outdo everything else Rakesh Roshan gets more Hollywoodized in some ways. That would be a mistake.

On another note Vivek Oberoi looks completely inadequate as the villain here (but we already knew this!). Just his old dependable scowling self whether he’s doing Shootout at Lokhandwala or this. Meanwhile that older Hrithik looks positively freaky. There was a bit of him in the previous film but looks like a full-fledged double role here.

    • “And the SFX can never completely impress on their own without enough imagination added to the mix (something that Shankar had in droves in Enthiran and something which Rakesh Roshan has never had!) ”

Agree completely with this point. And this entire comment is pretty convincingly argued, I haven’t encountered this kind of reading of the series but it makes sense. Having said that the previous two films were, for me, mostly forgettable (really because they’re basically effectively-done children’s films, tailor made for a family audience) and while the mix may have been genuine, I thought it still resulted in pretty stilted stuff. Enthiran is a good comparison for this and I think part of the reason that that film worked so well is that it was really self-aware. It basically took the logic of a masala hero, or at least the “superman” characteristics of this Tamil cinema archetype (certainly in Rajni’s history this is most evident) and tailored it for a sci-fi/superhero narrative. For Tamil cinema audiences it probably wasn’t that much of a leap to see Rajini go superhuman because he was (albeit in different ways) already there. The Krrish films didn’t really have this kind of history to lean on, and especially coming as these films did in a decade when Hindi cinema had transformed more fully into “Bollywood”, their method of mixing different cinematic sensibilities on retrospect seem to suggest a broken or disjointed cinema more than anything else. A more charitable way to say that might be that these films represented the crossroads Hindi cinema had reached. Perhaps they owed their success to the possibilities they suggested, to their Hollywood aspirations. In any case Krrish 3 might be releasing at the right time because in an age where the masala action hero is having a resurgence (even if a very bastardized one) it might heighten interest on an even greater scale than the previous films.

      • I complete agree with your ‘correction’ here in every sense. It is true that both films were even relatively insipid even accounting for everything. I vastly preferred Krrish to KMG (here Hrithik’s portrayal just got on my nerves beyond a point) but even here the really exciting moments that one associates with any kind of superhero venture were missing. Because one of the problems Rakesh Roshan has is that he’s an old school filmmaker who can do perhaps ‘Indian adventure fantasy’ to a degree but not really remain true to these superhero archives in the truest sense. On the other hand Enthiran had for instance a truly pulsating finale and really a whole final portion that really brings things to a close perfectly in every sense (including that great Rahman number). Which is not to say these problems don’t occur in Hollywood as well. Here too we’ve seen unimaginative films in the genre though those are failures of a different kind. With Krrish though perhaps a more cynical reading could also be offered which is that the film is simply the best glorification of Hrithik Roshan as a certain kind of aspirational star. In other words the Indian fascination with him has always been completely ‘rational’. He really is the sum of his parts. This sounds more reductive than I intend it to be but Hrithik’s stardom is not exactly a mystery. On the other hand the most authentic stardom is precisely mysterious, that cannot be reduced to the sum of its parts. Even at a relative level one sees this. Shahrukh is the perfect contemporary Bollywood example. Even a genealogical connection introduces a level of rationality to the star’s reception. With SRK though you had a very iconic star who would never be considered one other than through the world of his films. The opposite is true for Hrithik. If one encountered him somewhere on the street, if one then saw him dance as well one would more or less think the very things about him that one does after watching him on screen. Which is why the greatest stars in any culture also require an acculturation process to be truly appreciated. The great stars of a ‘foreign’ culture always appear disappointing or incomprehensible initially. Hindi viewers generally don’t ‘get’ Rajnikant. Mohanlal seems an even greater mystery. And so on. The connection once again with krrish is that these films really celebrate a certain new Indian (global) male (ideal) body. They’re essentially ad campaigns for him. Incidentally Hrithik wanted to launch his career with KMG while Rakesh Roshan felt that wasn’t the right kind of debut. This is what the audience likes when it comes to hrithik. Which is why he never makes a mark in films like ZNMD and Agneepath, two very different genres, even when these films work at some level or the other. He is not a star the audience wishes to identify with. He is simply supposed to be at a distance, kind of like in a storefront, where one passes by and one admires the ‘model’ (if mannequin sounds too harsh). But he is also not in the overman mould where god-like though the hero might be he can always traffic with the human in important ways (of course this is an old mythological structure). putting the same a different way there he has always had that bit of Krishna in him who is represented by a more anodyne sexuality.

And so once again your sense of the film is certainly one I can also relate to. Perhaps both readings I’ve offered are really two sides of the same coin.

        • So true. And Enthiran avoided this by having Rajini play the bad guy too!

Seriously though that first look at Vivek Oberoi is just awkward. He looks like Max Schreck with more hair and less plausibility.

        • GF’s point about Rajni playing the bad guy is really what made Robot more sinister and more appealing.

About Vivek having more hair, it is exact opposite of Kulbhushan Kharbanda in Shaan.

Speaking of Shaan, it was one of the most polished films which unfortunately did not work. The vagaries of Indian moviegoers. They reject good films and embrace the most stupid ones.

      • No not really a fan of Rakesh Roshan. There’s really no film of his I really like all that much. But he’s one of the rare figures who’s still relatively rooted. Wish he had more imagination and other strengths to go along with this but I do want him to remain relevant. To be honest I do believe he’s become a lesser director with Hrithik. Because now his films are essentially massive ad campaigns meant to give Hrithik the right jumpstart whenever he needs a very big one. He wasn’t any great shakes earlier but at least he was trying different genres. Even with hrithik he could do other things (though admittedly not as successfully) but he’s just doing one thing over and over again. In many ways he’s stopped being a director except when he does something with Hrithik. It’s hard to find another example of a director who works or worked exclusively with his son. And this is a part of the Hrithik narrative that gets underestimated. It is impossible to imagine his career without the four films he did with his father. Even excluding the debut film the Krrish installments have come at crucial points for him. Here I will say that Rakesh Roshan has understood Hrithik’s appeal and chief strengths lie better than anyone else. He’s harnessed it better than anyone else. Incidentally I don’t really have a problem with hrithik. He’s certainly easy to watch on screen. But I do consider him a completely superficial actor. He obviously has strengths as a star which too in my view get exaggerated because he fulfills a certain physical (global) ideal for many people (though the same global ideal is not given as much prestige in every culture.. for instance in Hollywood the Hrithik kind of star could either do Spiderman or rom-cms regularly..). But in any case I don’t mind him. But discussions around him (though not only around him) sometimes get insane online and elsewhere. Getting back to what I started out with I do enjoy watching his father in certain middle cinema attempts of his in the 70s. Always found him a pleasant presence though of course he had no special talent in any sense.

The 180/200/200+ targets maybe more for jingoistic fans but the RELEVANT fight is with YJHD …
It will pit the two heroes who will dominate the next decade and more,,,in their peak genres
Yjhd had ranbir propped up by kjo/ayan, favoured genre and above all Deepika ex-factor and pretams Catchy music
Even besharam may find it difficult to catch Yjhd inspite of benefitting from Yjhd box office (even Bombay velvet may find it hard to beat Yjhd inspite of being a better film)
So Yjhd was the highest figure ranbir can offer in the current phase.

Krish3 has hritk in his favoured genre and though this apparently looks an ‘easy hit’–im not yet sure kf the ‘easy’ bit
    its now clear
It’s krish3 vs Yjhd —is the relevant battle–
I think I know the answer to that but have to see a few more promos to confirm the result …
Good to see one official spoof fighting the other
May the best spoof win 🙂

    • The genres are different and so no comparison.

YJHD was a sleeper hit like Gadar ek Prem Katha and HAHK.. No one expected it.

Ranbir may rule but hrithik is not as versatile as ranbir and so It is Ranbir only.

Ranbir’s Besharam is such a wildcard for him…although people didn’t expected YJHD to be such success but it was always expected to hit around 80-90crrs. Besharam trailer looks to have been the most criticized trailer in recent times. Whether Ranbir’s starpower can overcome it is a thing for future. But I think Ranbir should stay away from movies like APKGK, AA, BEH, YJHD, Besharam for couple of years at least. It have started to get repetitive and he will start loosing fans which had the strong foundations from movies like Rocket Singh, Barfi, Rockstar etc

  35. Guess it’s really going to be Krrish meets the X-Men this time! Those poor mutants look like they needed to get through a few more hoops in the mutation process but someone pulled the plug!

The next time around Krrish could perhaps tackle Japanese sea monsters..

In some ways this whole translation offers interesting cultural commentary. The degree to which specific superhero franchises with very particular histories can be all meshed up when they’re ‘cloned’ in India. In other words the superhero becomes an abstract idea. Krrish might as well have Thor’s hammer!

What once again appalls me is not the attempt itself (I’ll probably still check it out!) but the whole commentary surrounding this kind of thing. They’re all ‘fine actors’ whether they’re doing Barfi or Krrish or Guru or Mangal Pandey or RNBDJ or ETT or whatever!

      • LOL! You’re quite right. Those stars didn’t need to be literal superheroes and if they did face these contemporary superheroes you wouldn’t want to bet against them!

On a more serious note though those stars belong to the epic registers of India. ‘Vijay’ is in many ways a new mythic figure. But in any case these mythic figures are not the same as superheroes. There’s a profound difference between the two. Of course superheroes often owe something to myths. But they function in a very secular universe where they are simply the sum of their powers. On the other hand the mythic hero is always located in a system of belief, his signification is always a bit more cosmic. Having said that over the last 20 years or more there has been this attempt, specially beginning with the Dark Knight, to render a lot of these heroes/superheroes as mythic figures. Once upon a time Thor who actually belongs to myth was a cartoonish kind of character. Today the least superhero-like Batman is the most mythologized. He’s become this dark, urban myth. Elsewhere whenever the superhero has to be mythologized a sci-fi element is quite often introduced. The mythological deficit of meaning is therefore made up (or such is the attempt) by featuring literal cosmic battles and so on. Nonetheless the American superhero is very rooted in a certain cultural landscape and makes perfect sense within it. When these superheroes are borrowed by other cultures though they lose even these references. If Desai had been making a superhero film he would have drowned in in the epic traditions of India. Krrish though is completely Hollywoodized. And which is a pity because I think there is so much in the Indian heritage that would make for wonderful cinema if done the right way. But no one attempts this.

  49. I thought George Clooney’s voice was too damn crucial for the film to get through. The way I saw it , the element that really connects with the audience big time, is the connection that the characters of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney make in the film. If the backdrop in The Lunchbox is the frenetic, crowded metropolis of Mumbai, here it is the desolate, barren space against which two lonely, passionate souls carryout their conversation. While we have glimpses of Bullock’s full-bodied persona, with Clooney it is just his disembodied voice. It had to work..for the film to work.
