  1. Once again a pastiche of various Hollywood tropes in the genre but I think it’s an effective trailer for its contexts. It should do very well assuming Rakesh Roshan once again has enough ‘Indianizaton’ in the mix. I’ll probably check this out in a theater where I don’t a number of big Hindi commercial releases these days. Chalk it down to my continuing addiction to the genre!

Incidentally that first scene with the older Hrithik is embarrassing! Mostly because of the ‘actor’!

On a final note think the trailer is way better than the posters.

    • Yeah, I cringed with the opening moments of this trailer. And it wasn’t just that the character was older, even in the original Koi Mil Gaya I found Hrithik embarrassingly bad at playing the mentally challenged character. But of course for a superhero in the Hollywood mold there’s no one who cuts a more appropriate figure. This will obviously do very good business.

      • think this is a film everyone will show up for. And this is isn’t true even for very many big films, even those that end up doing well. The rest depends on the film of course.

        • True. Ra1 proved that taking a gamble with expensive FX will at least ensure a fantabulous initial. 120+ is guaranteed, rest depends on the content. Trust Roshan Sr will do better than SRK in that department.

    • Yes and the reason D2 had an edge earlier was greater metro multiplex participation. As opposed to this Krrish was huge in smaller centers. Both films did very well everywhere but Krrish really had legs in smaller centers. Of course the difference between 2006 and today is that there are a lot more multiplexes in a lot more small centers. There isn’t even a comparison. On the other hand many of these multiplexes also behave like their Bombay counterparts. Which is one of the reasons why a film like YJHD can do as much as it did just on the basis of these multiplexes. All said and done I have a somewhat old-fashioned sense about these things. You can crack the biggest initial based on a variety of factors but to go much beyond this you need ‘substance’ in the film, however this is defined. Rakesh Roshan has been very successful doing this for the Krrish films. Also based on the Ra One initial and all the Hollywood films that do well in this genre (and of course something like Robot.. because Krrish will be huge in the dubbed Southern versions) Krrish will have no issues racing to one of the biggest initials. A film that is liked could also give this the biggest initial ever. All said and done Krrish shouldn’t really be doing less than 200. Just based on past performance and where the market is today. The same goes for D3. Think D3 should still top Krrish but the wildcard is nonetheless the script in each case. That each film can get to a massive initial is not in doubt but trending is another matter altogether.

        >>>>

Satyam ji, I think it will be the same this time too. Rakesh Roshan the director has to hold the interest of the multiplex audience with the actual “content” because the VFX looks poor here. Already the comparison with Ra.one and mocking has started on web. From the trailer itself this looks like VFX heavy film so that would be a bigger negative on the multiplex side though I think the single screens will lap it up big time.

In a similar way I always had and still have doubts on D3 on whether Aamir can pull off the “cool” act and stunts that the franchise requires where both John and Hrithik were good at (their physicality being a plus). Can Aamir match them in terms of “cool’ factor is the question as no one sees acting in this sort of films. Its something he hasn’t done so far in his career so that’s a big apprehension in my mind.

However in both cases I believe they will cross 3I. The question really is by how much and the answer I think lies in the way audience react to the above two issues.

  8. Actor Hrithik Roshan has bounced back after his brain surgery and is readying for the release of his superhero film ” Krissh 3″.

“I am fit and fine… I am absolutely fantastic. Even with the hole in my brain… my spirit is intact. I thank all my fans for love and support. It (surgery) has reaffirmed few values. There is nothing better in this world than a man’s will,” Hrithik told reporters at the trailer launch of ‘Krissh 3’.

“Today, I am here because of one man’s vision and that is my father. He is an example of courage,” he said.

Hrithik was suffering from Subdural Hematoma caused in the brain as a result of the head injury. He successfully underwent a brain surgery to remove a two-month-old clot at Hinduja Healthcare Surgical in Khar last month.

The actor was performing stunts for his film ‘Bang Bang’ two months ago and suffered an injury on his head.

  9. “I would not like to talk about my powers… want to keep it a suspense,” he said.

In the third installment of this superhero series, Vivek and Kangana are the new additions. They both play antagonists. “I loved working with the Roshans.. they are genuine, large hearted. I believe if you have a legendary director like Rakesh Roshan then you can play any character convincingly, it is his brilliance… he has created the character,” Vivek said.

“The credit goes to writers and Rakesh sir,” he said. It was Hrithik, who wanted to play the evil character played by Vivek but the director was not convinced.

“I wanted to play the villian. I think my dad was biased. But thank God I am not playing Vivek’s role as after looking at him on screen I feel only he could do this. He has done a phenomenal job,” Hrithik said.

Kangana too is happy to play a negative character. “For the first time playing a negative role… I have an unconventional look. I am sexy but wicked. I enjoy being called sexy,” she said. The film is set to release on November 4.

  11. Krish3 CHEESE–head in the clouds & feet on the ground!!

Finally had a look @ the first promo. Overall I agree with Satyams readings here most and he has summarised it well imo.
‘Cheesy’ visuals hit u on the face from the word go…and it wasn’t unexpected either. But it’s the emphasis on cheese which I found noteworthy here.
However one needs to look BEYOND that cheese. This is a film that has to work in a big way -multiplexes, interiors, overseas and the works to be credible –and nope, I’m NOT reducing the targets here–they are emphatically excruciatingly high for hritik in this genre.

    So why the ‘cheese’?
A team that has employed a physical trainer for hritik who charges more than many ‘lead heroines’ –can they not employ ANY godamm edgy or maverick or technically competent hollywoodised indian director or even a reasonable Hollywood one !!!
But will that work in this magnitude of investment returns?doubt it.

The roshans have learnt from the kites experience (thou I liked parts of it)—what did anurag barfi basu, Barbara’s Mori and Brett Rattner do ? It was neither here nor there…

    The unique indian audiences
Are a tricky lot. While segments are exposed to the best of Hollywood and will compare vfx to Hollywood and will be the first ones to point out to tacky vfx (if any), most usually don’t go only by vfx.
Unlike their Hollywood counterparts, the indian audiences want ‘soul’ and they NEED an emotional hook to all the sci-fi /vfx shenanigans (one only has to look at Bra1 to prove that!)
So the ‘cheeses is a requisite ingredient for most segments (even for some others who won’t admit to liking it)

    PLUSSES
Rakesh Roshan for all his ‘old school’ style has high ambitions of narrowing the gap with Hollywood in this genre BUT has his Feet Firmly planted on the ground and remembers his ROOTS (& that of the audiences)
This movie has to be a PAN-INDIAN hit to be credible and he’s a good choice for that challenge

But the biggest /only REAL Plus here is HRITIK in his BIGGEST test since his debut..
Yeah if it works it can go a long way– but I don’t think it will be as easy and have to see more to confirm that.
There are some GENUINE ISSUES here like
Audience exposure to markedly superior Hollywood genre
Conventional lack of interest in Bollywood to this genre
    Fatigued franchise

But if there’s ANYONE who can make this work in Bollywood /India at this SCALE –it is Hritik Roshan
I’m not exaggerating—in the superhero genre–Hritik is amongst the BEST worldwide, forget India…
Even comparing him like to like with the likes of the very best Hollywood superheroes -I find him par (or more) even to the best (& I include Henry Cavill here)

All the best to the roshans
In his debut film, Rakesh Roshan mortgaged his house and earnings
This one may not lose him his house if it bombs –but Hritiks career and credibility in his choicest genre is at stake.
Nothing but big numbers will suffice,,..no excuses, no spins…

    Having said that—

““Today, I am here because of one man’s vision and that is my father. He is an example of courage,” he said.”

    Have to agree…
Must hand it to Rakesh Roshan—
In a risky genre(for Bollywood seven years after the previous success with changing audience tastes),
possessing doubtful skillset for that genre,
being past his prime age wise and sensibility wise,

The man has placed his sons career in his own hands
Ad invested all he could into it
When he could have easily employed ANY edgy/young/happening director for the job (&escaped responsibility!)
This takes guts and conviction…(& courage)

      • “Hritiks not yet fit & is nervous”

There’s nothing that wounds the psyche of a star as much as bodily injury. This is true for all of us of course but the star being larger than life develops a ‘public’ body as well and sooner or later succumbs to the illusion that this wider body consumed by so many is less vulnerable. It’s not that one intellectually believes this but that one starts occupying that emotional space. Here of course the most legendary example is Bachchan’s own where the greatest god or cinema was also a heartbeat away from death. And this too was the shock of his injury — that he could ‘die’! Getting back to hrithik I’m not sure if he looks particularly nervous here (I’ve always detected a certain nervous anxiety in his off screen appearances, he doesn’t love the camera as much when he’s not in a film) but a bit of uncertainty at this point would hardly be surprising. And of course Krrish for him is symbolically much bigger than just any big production. So soon after his surgery he’s superhero once again in a film.

Things could not get any better for the Roshan family this year. After the humongous views and appreciation the trailer of their biggest venture ‘Krrish 3’ received, reports suggest that the film has outbeaten the record of H’wood films by gathering 12 million views in just a short span of ten days!

Krrish 3 has left behind two of the biggest super hero releases of Hollywood, ‘Avengers’ (almost 6 million) and ‘Thor’ (almost 4 million) and thus emerged as the most awaited movie of the year.

The Roshan family is beaming with excitement over the news. Last heard, the trailer views have reached a new high of 12.8 millions.

  19. Krish3 trailer beats avengers & thor !!!!

    This ‘feat’ hasn’t gone unnoticed
This was reported in the local media in an international news show I checked coincidentally

    Other reports —
    http://comicbook.com/blog/2013/08/18/krrish-3-trailer-proving-a-hit-on-youtube/

Krrish 3 is an upcoming Bollywood superhero science fiction film, which is being produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan. The Krrish 3 trailer was uploaded to YouTube back in early August, and it immediately drew attention because of the large scale destruction shown and the slow motion special effects.
Krrish 3 looks a little bit like Man Of Steel, The Matrix, Transformers, Iron Man, and the X-Men all wrapped up into one. In a very short time, Krrish 3 has hit over 13 million views on YouTube.

A report in the Times Of India has put the Krrish 3 trailer as outperforming blockbusters like The Avengers and Thor. When we checked YouTube, The Avengers trailer actually had quite a few more views. However, The Avengers was released over a year ago, so the Times Of India article could be referencing just the number of views received in the first ten days. It could also just be confusion over how studio trailer get uploaded multiple times to YouTube, so some trailers could show less views.
Regardless of whether Krrish 3 outperformed The Avengers on YouTube in a similar time period or not, thirteen million views on YouTube for a new movie trailer is still impressive no matter how you look at it.

Ps: the micro dissection has started as to how this could be actually a ‘mistake’ in uploading etc
But c’mon guys give some credit where it’s due
Krish3 is rubbing shoulders with the likes of avengers etc with a budget of less than 10% of the avatars & avengers type mega productions…

  24. Hritik is a great dancer but everything he does seems manufactured. He seems to have that “hey look I am acting, hey look I am dancing” kind of statement stamped on whatever he does. He acts even while he dances. I just feel he should just be natural once in a while.

  25. One can say that about just about everyone
“He acts even while he dances”—btw that’s a positive thing– otherwise it gets ‘mechanical’
And just bcos HR doesn’t indulge in too much politicking & self promotion& subtle intimidation, doesn’t mean people should find flimsy excuses to pull him down…

Prabhudeva is technically better but there’s something elasticity wierd about him …But when in flow-there’s no better dancer / mover in Bollywood than HR (ever)

    Like

    • Well I dont really have any issues with him, infact I quite like him a lot. There is a lot one can learn from him but that will not change anything else I said.

Prabhu Deva plays more often than not someone who is associated with dance in his movies. So I cannot fault his moves. But Hritik doesnt dance naturally. He seems like a robot moving to a rhythm. For all that you know he might be saying “one, Two, Three, Four, left foot out, right foot in” while dancing too. It looks great on screen mind you but not natural. Acting while dancing is not a positive thing. I think you need to just let yourself go while dancing rather than worry about how the audience will see you in a particular step. And he himself admits he is not a natural and he has to work for hours to perfect a move. He is a great role model in that sense as most of the things he does on screen are not intrinsic. They are all acquired skills honed due to his hard work. The same is true for his acting also. He is hardly a natural actor. You can see the effort on screen. He is always wary on how a particular thing will look on screen while acting. All manufactured as I said. Take his entry scene in ZNMD. He ‘acts’ so wierdly trying to show he is a superbusy investment banker who has no time. The whole tone of that movie is subtle and HR is so out of place most of the time. And that becomes evident when he has an intelligent actor in the same frame as his. Be it Rishi Kapoor in Agneepath or Farhan Akhtar in ZNMD. No wonder Farhan walked away with all laurels in ZNMD.

If you need to see a natural dancer, I would recommend Vijay. He is hardly an actor but a great natural dancer.

I also feel Aamir has lately started getting into that manufactured mode. His performances in the 90s were bindaas. Sallu has always been bindaas, and SRK does it only when he wants to. Mostly tries to ham his way out.

  26. Hritik’s body of work is really good. He is simply a wonderful star (I am not using the word actor here – as many don’t consider him that. But he is gifted with greek-god features and he emotes straight from his heart – if that is not acting then what is?) – He has done agnipath / Guzaarish (one of his finest perf.) / ZNMD / JA / Lakshya etc. apart from his dad’s projects (all BB stuff). He has created a special place for him as a solo-successful-hero. This is what Abhi shd have achieved but call it badluck or lack of good choices or even when the choices were right (lack of committment to the character – DRONA is the biggest example of how he could turn it into his biggest BB by participating at the script level and then making a chiseled-body). Not to take away anything from him as he surely has the potential but even now (and that s good) when he is riding on lot of forthcoming BB stuff – how many projects have him as a solo-hero? Has he become a bankable solo-star? well…..

Krishna Mehra / Krrish / Rohit Mehra

All 4 likely to be SH/BB stuff at the B.O. and all different and solo-hero stuff.

      and ABHI’s upcoming projects:

      Sam

      2013 Dhoom 3 (completed)
      A.C.P. Jai Dixit

      HNY (shooging on)

      although all 3 SH/BB stuff – how many as a solo-hero?

at-least he has progressed in a way that he is now part of some BB stuff but comparing his career with HR’s – the latter has clearly established himself as a successful BO solo-star and how!

Once upon a time I thought he was very good and had great potential. I liked him in Yuva very very much. KANK was his last performance I liked. After that he has just stagnated completely in the last 4-5 years. Most of his last performance he has been too wooden for my liking. I am new to this blog so I must admit I was surprised to see that there is actually something like an Abhishek fan club here. I think his work doesnt merit such a loyal fan club. Now SRK is probably in top 3 for many many years? If one fails to give SRK credit what makes you think HR will get any credit. HR will get credit if it means using HR to bring down SRK but outside of that, HR will not get any credit…

        • Actually and though this might come as a shock to you (as it does to many) there is absolutely no connection (none, zilch) between box office stardom and acting ability (defined in a serious sense). Neither in India nor in Hollwyood. The examples are so legion it seems to be an absurd exercise to even have to list them!

          Like

      • I analyze all careers well! Or perhaps I analyze all of them badly! But it’s the fans who find some views less acceptable than others! I have a simple proposition here — the reason I analyze Aamir well (in your version.. not one everyone agrees with.. ask Oldgold!) is precisely because I also say this stuff about Hrithik. In other words the two are connected. It is the same worldview, it is the same ‘sense’ of what is important in an industry in a historical sense. And so on. You don’t get one without the other. it’s a larger framing within which I place all these stars. If you move one out of place you spoil the frame! Which doesn’t mean that there cannot be different evaluations from time to time based on facts.

  43. Is releasing Krrish 3 on Nov 4 a wise decision? Rakesh Roshan explains

    By Ryan Lobo, Sep 11, 2013 – 02:04 IST

Krrish 3 by now has become one of the most talked about and of course most awaited films of this year. Ever since the trailer of the film was released, the audience has been buzzing with anticipation for the film. However, Rakesh Roshan’s decision to release the film on November 4 seems to have ruffled a few feathers with certain distributors.

In fact a portion of the industry apparently claims that Rakesh Roshan would be losing out on a massive weekend collection with this decision. However, on the other hand, remembering the fact that usually in the run up to Diwali and not forgetting the day of Diwali itself, most of the populace that comprises a majority of Hindus, will be busy with preparations and poojas for the festival.

Past records also show that films which released on Diwali day show a rise in the business during the morning shows, however they have almost always shown a massive downturn during the evening and night shows.

Bollywood Hungama caught up with Rakesh Roshan who readily laid our apprehensions to rest. “First of all, I want to know who are the ones saying that my decision to release on November 4 is wrong? As I see it, none of the distributors that I am working with have any problem”, says Rakesh. While at the same time, defending his decision on the release date, he says, “See in my experience, I have noticed that the pre-Diwali release week has always featured a low turnout in terms of numbers and revenues, so why take that risk, especially when I can release my film the following Monday and still have a full week for the film to capitalize on.”

While the trailer of the film has already gathered enough steam, there are many in the industry who seem confident about the film’s success. Rakesh Roshan being one of them says, “For me, I know what my film is and with the response the trailer has been getting, the film will obviously get a better response in the cinema halls. So I am not worried about losing out on those three days when I have a week to explore my film.”

    • Whether he can get the biggest possible opening numbers this way or not I think that those who are confident about a certain trending on their film are less bothered with getting the absolute biggest first day or what have you.

  45. This is a pretty atrocious song even by the not-so-sublime standards of previous Krrish soundtracks. The last song was pretty poor too. Beyond this Hrithik looks very weird here! Don’t know why he keeps returning to this gigolo look.

    Like

    • LOL! Even worse than the song itself is the supremely awkward choreography! And Kangana now looks so artificial, that Katrina would look positively earthy beside her!

      Like

    • Effeminate more than gigolo-ish is how I would describe it. There is so much fluidity in his dance moves, they really make him look gay, ie, a ‘macho’ man could never dance with such sublimity and grace! I cant find the video, but Jon Stewart had long ago made fun of Krissh precisely because of those dance moves. An Indian Superhero who dances like that. They couldve done away with all the dancing in a superhero movie, perhaps just had songs in the background while Krissh flies from place to place.

      Like

      • Actually a macho man (as per the Western definition) would never do 99% of the things that a typical Bollywood hero does; your average American comedian would find everything from his close, physically expressive male friendships to his romantic duets to be ‘gay’, and his overt attachment to his mother would earn him the tag of a ‘momma’s boy who needs to grow up’.

Why use Western perceptions of masculinity to judge a series, that despite its superficially ‘global’ facade, is completely rooted in Desi sensibilities?

On the rest most of us who’ve criticized the Krrish trailer haven’t exactly said anything about its box office. I’ve usually argued the opposite. Having said that it’s unfortunate that this crude mentality continues to dominate many conversations where the moment a certain box office gross is guaranteed it is supposed to end all discussion. As I said the other day people suddenly develop a conscience only when Grand Masti releases. The problem is that most major stars are really doing the equivalent of GM anyway. That is how you get those grosses. So SRK goes to Rohit Shetty to get it! How far is this from the GM kind of world?! Even leaving aside the specific genre most major stars in their key films are really doing the equivalent of this. A cinema by the numbers designed to get big initials and little more. The films are sometimes passable or even enjoyable. But they’re fundamentally poor representatives of their respective genre. And again a big gross doesn’t end all debates. Will Smith was a huge box office star for the longest time. This didn’t mean one couldn’t debate him as an actor or on other grounds. Or for that matter the films in question. I’m all for box office debates but one should keep these apart from other matters. Because again this crude, crass thinking becomes the norm in every other discussion.

        • With the abysmally low standards going around in Hi-fi currently, there is NO doubt that Krishiit 3 would mint money. And that HR’s would be heralded as the most emotional act that anybody could ever display behind a caped face. If anybody had an iota of doubt that SRK didn’t enter Shetty’s camp just to get back his mojo/money-power, then God help him or her. And if ‘on the ground’, as people say, a ‘haggard’ look is inconsequential when it comes to ‘money’, so be it. But the fact, CE or no CE, SRK is looking ill-fit and haggard in CE. CE’s success doesn’t change his age or his worsening looks!

In an industry-English-media complex where you have the likes of HR’s act in KMG passed off as equivalent to Day-Lewis’ Christy Brown, what type of qualitative standards are we exactly talking of?

Amitabh Bachchan had a brief moment of respite when a crappy AAJ KA ARJUN became a hit. But did it really matter to Amitabh? Did it even ‘buy’ time for him? It is still an embarrassment for fans – at least to see him consciously aware of his age and looks when romancing Manisha or Shilpa– like me though at that time, it might have put in some ‘mojo’ for whatever it was worth. I didn’t simply ‘change’ my estimate for AAJ KA ARJUN just because it managed to become a hit! Give me a decent one like NISHABDH where AB comes up with a mind-boggling performance that would literally shade every other actor that has tried his hand in displaying emotional complexities of a May-December romance.

So a better analysis would be, will CE really add anything to SRK’s repertoire? Other than the fact that it minted 225 or so crores? Yes of course that is a big achievement. Nobody is denying that. Box office pundits will carry on with baniya mathematics and the number game. But the real question is how does CE really add value to SRK’s portfolio? If he is really that great an actor that his fans make him out to be, then with or without CE, SRK had to be a damn good actor who would have directors line up to him. But that didn’t happen. Taking the other side of the equation, if SRK was so dependent on a project to ‘bring’ him back on the playing field as a still-relevant player, then things pre-CE were really bleak. So his fans have to decide what they expect from SRK and what their standards of ‘stardom’ or ‘dominance’ are.

I am not going to change my view on AB just because he gives a huge hit with David Dhawan. It is immaterial for me as a fan. Now those monetary metrics will obviously matter for those that have invested in the film. And the rest will be taken care of by them. I need not ‘complement’ the stature of an actor by colluding with them.

So this mentality of ‘anything goes’ because a film has pulled in huge numbers is not really a good logic. Then is GM a classic? If it is, then yes, we are going to get sequels to GM and we better be ready for them and stop whining. One needs to separate qualitative and quantitative analysis. Otherwise we are just jumbling up the equation and simply ‘manipulating’ it every-time so suit or needs.

Here’s something in case one missed..

I’ve been hearing about SRK being over for more then 10 years, well here you are, still talking about SRK…

          Like

        • Once again very poor film history on your part. Of the older stars most hung around for decades (they’re not sportsmen anyway where they have to be super fit to survive). Just being around is not the point, it’s about being relevant. Or defining the terms of the debate. SRK hasn’t done this forever. Even CE doesn’t change this. So yeah he’s jumped on the Rohit Shetty bandwagon. The gross will soon be superseded by others. But even accepting your terms between OSO and CE SRK was nowhere close to such a big grosser. That’s 7 years! Of course in between people like yourself were still pretending this wasn’t a problem. So when he doesn’t have the big numbers he’s still doing well, when he does he’s suddenly on top! Salman was extinct for the longest time before he returned with Wanted and especially Dabanng. For most of the past decade he wasn’t really relevant to any conversation. So this whole ‘Khan’ label is in any case problematic and moreover communally coded in certain ways. If one or more do well the guy not doing so somewhat gets some credit for just belonging to the label. No other star has this advantage. So it’s an abstraction called the Khans where as long as someone or the other does well everyone’s ok! But again the older stars were around for decades. Would you like a list with dates? As for the current ones well if everyone’s around for that long surely SRK being around is not the most surprising thing?! When Devgan and Akshay Kumar and anyone even half-significant is still around! Again the problem with this game is that it’s supremely dishonest. You can play it in your mind but if you do so publicly and if you’re not surrounded by folks like yourself you will get called again and again on it! Just in the last few comments there have been a string of contradictory and downright dishonest claims, some of which I’ve pointed out. Again take the CE win and be happy. Don’t go crazy with it unless you’re willing to follow that logic through. Tomorrow if a film doesn’t work you’ll be back to the ‘hey it’s pretty good for a flop’ routine!

bachhan has been irrelavent for about 25 years now.

Can you provide the worlwide boxoffice numbers for SRK films between OSO and CE. i assume none of his films would be in top 10 since you’re saying he wasn’t relevant. While you’re at it provide bachhans too for that same period.

anybody who knows you for past decade or so knows what kind of honesty you displays when it comes to srk.

For me it’s just fun to see you be so misarable for past 10 years because SRK is still here and in top 5 and bachhans (the whole family) is totally irrelavent.

you have your opinion and i have mine. if my opinions are dishonest then yours are as well. but i don’t go around judging people and start calling them names, but i guess when your fav actor is so irrelavent, it will bring misery and on top of it the actor you’ve spent your life bringging down is still in top 5.

          Happy few more years 🙂

        • Bachchan’s films were actually in the top 5 or top 3 through 1992. So if you’re using that top 10 argument for SRK you should be consistent here. Again before asking for honesty you must first prove your own. Then Bachchan was out of action for 5 years beginning in 1992. You have to account for this too. Beyond this it is again dishonest to talk about his relevance when (and we’ve been through this before) every top director in the country wanted him or when the KBC ratings created Indian history (he’s now into his seventh season) which SRK couldn’t match (even on the second season let alone the first) or when he had the widest range of endorsements of any star then or now (which included even an anti-polio campaign where they saw a 400% rise after his efforts) to of course his unmatched transcendence as a public/cultural figure. One could multiply these examples or flesh them out but it’s simply dishonest to pretend it’s only about the box office (of course it’s another matter that he’s had hits even here and in films like Paa or Black where as I said some years ago SRK to even have something at that level would need a hit around 2028! or at least 2023 or something.. which is the gap between Zanjeer and some of Bachchan’s successes this past decade) when without extraordinary relevance you cannot have a star do so much. But it is of course particularly dishonest on your part to make this sort of claim because every time people argue against SRK you pretend that people have been saying the same for 5 years or 10 years or whatever. By the same token I expect you to be saying the same things about Bachchan when SRK’s kid debuts in the movies! You too have presumably been saying this for very long. And of course there’s the SRK side of the equation. When it’s OSO or CE it proves SRK is doing fine, when there are seven years in between where every big film either fails or underperforms or even when it’s successful (RNBDJ) it’s nowhere close to the highest benchmarks of that period (Ghajini, then 3I) then suddenly all of it doesn’t matter and you’re back to your ‘hey he did 100 crores for a flop’ or whatever. As if he’d be getting an initial of 20 crores and the film would fold at 40! And again using this argument Bachchan had absolutely no problems through 1992. Because between 1988 and 1992 unlike SRK he had the biggest initial, no one was even close. Then even when the films didn’t work he was safely in the top 3 or 5 on the basis of those initials. A film like AAA was a super-hit and one of that years very big grossers, Hum had unimaginable hysteria in that period, I doubt any film, accounting for everything, has ever matched Hum’s initial since, but in any case that sort of claim could very easily be used for him in this period. Hum released when Bachchan was nearing 50. At that age Jumma Chumma did what Kajra re did all those years later. Then leaving aside longevity it’s also about intensity of box office success for the longest period. It’s not just about being around that long. Jeetendra hung around for 35 years. Rajesh Khanna was very relevant not even for half of that period. But history remembers Rajesh Khanna not Jeetendra! It’s about magnitude too. Of course Bachchan’s longevity is unsurpassed or unsurpassable but in terms of his magnitude I’ve put up pieces here by both Taran and Nahta (not necessarily Bachchan’s greatest fans) who said at different points in the past decade that no one could be compared to him, not the Khans combined, no one.

But again the point isn’t all this mountain of evidence, it’s about whether at the end of the day one operates with a level of delusion where one is trying to deny the sun and moon every day in one’s mind. There are many SRK fans I’ve encountered over the years who’ve been in this business! Much as a different kind of delusion makes you guys blind to SRK’s weaknesses and/or vulnerabilities in various ways. Of course you’re welcome to your delusions. Unfortunately what happens in these discussions is that the dishonesty shines through at every level. I’ve actually not even provided the above examples for you because you are quite beyond persuasion in these matters. I do so for other readers who without the benefit of more information but with less than your gifts of truth-denial might be interested in things. I’ll say this at the end and a quick example makes my point. Whatever evidence I bring up for Bachchan in say the years 1988-1992 this does not entail claiming that he was in this period exactly where he was say from 1982-1986 (when he left for politics for two years). I would find that absurd. Even the greatest star had an arc to his career. One can argue about a number of things but there is decline even for the greatest star. That Sachin has had this longevity is stunning. Doesn’t mean that he was playing at age 36 the way he was at age 28! Similarly with SRK the facts are there for all to see provided one is interested in the facts. I realize that is always improbably the case with most people on forums online!

  49. An increasing number of films are being released on other days of the week too, provided they fall on certain public holidays

Rakesh and Hrithik Roshan’s mega budget film Krrish 3 has a Friday slot open for it, but the father-son duo have decided to release it on a Monday (November 4) instead. Rakesh Roshan, producer and director of the superhero franchise, explains, “Friday, Saturday and Sunday before Diwali are definitely not good days to release a film as the collections are generally not up to the mark. It picks up after Diwali as the festivities continue, so we’ve decided to release our film on Monday.”

He isn’t the first producer to take such a decision. Traditionally, films in Bollywood release on a Friday (given the numbers the approaching weekend could rake in). Of late, however, quite a few films have been hitting theatres on other days of the week too, provided of course they coincide with a public holiday in India.

Salman Khan’s Bodyguard and Shah Rukh Khan’s RA.One released on a Wednesday, whereas Hrithik’s Agneepath released on a Thursday, followed by SRK’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar on a Tuesday. Next week, Ranbir Kapoor’s Besharam will hit theatres on October 2 (Wednesday), which falls on Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday.

Says Utpal Acharya, country head – distribution and acquisitions, Reliance Entertainment, “With corporatisation, the film business is now dictated by the same commerce and economics that drive other organised sectors. Irrespective of whether it is a Friday, there are seven main days — Diwali, Eid, Christmas, Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day, Republic Day and the first Friday post-IPL — much wanted for film releases.”

Needless to say, many of the movies mentioned above broke records at the box office including Ek Tha Tiger, which touched around 130 crores within a week, and RA.One, which garnered around 85 crores over the ‘five-day’ weekend.

However, there is a downside to this strategy also. To begin with, not all holidays are close to the weekend. So, if the response to a film is not up to the mark over the next few working days, the collections fall, and then even the weekend advantage is frittered away.

Case in point — Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which barely managed to cross 100 crore in lifetime collection. Similarly, collections of the Ajay Devgn — Sanjay Dutt starrer Rascals, which released on Dussehra (Thursday), fell on Friday and continued to dip over the weekend. “This strategy only helps a good film. A bad film will not work irrespective of the holidays,” says Roshan.

The crew had to travel to different locations for hours. The actors even braved sandstorms in the desert. But it was flies, numbering in their thousands, that they faced the most trouble with. They’d spray themselves with insect repellent before every take, while shooting at the Dead Sea.

The crew often had to go without lunch as the swarming flies would make it impossible to eat anything. Hrithik, who couldn’t miss meals, however, worked his way around the problem by jogging around the set while eating his sandwich.

After seeing the trailor, i thought that film will do min business of 250 crores (Long week end!). even trailer was a blockbuster in you tube cemented my feelings. but team krrish3 made a blunder by releasing the medio core songs….they should have kept the songs as a surprise element, so that it would have easily crossed CE business. Now, they need a new trailer which showcases the stunts / actions of a Indians most loved super hero…to eliminate the negativity due to songs.

  52. & I am not understanding Monday Logic. Rakesh Roshan is from old school, Listen to the music, u will understand. Hopefully he will be able to match his own legacy of KMG & Krrish in terms of entertainment and Action. & coming to the movie, i beleive the biggest audience for this movie are youths & kids. Nov 1, Friday is a holiday in South (Karnataka, Andhra), Nov 2nd is a deepavali Holiday + saturday, Sunday is Lakshmi puja (Krish think tank is trying to save this sunday!! as they feel lakshmi puja will not bring in family audience and it might dent the sunday business, so let us avoid this Sunday itself!! what a logic… ) as i said, since youth is the target audience, i dont understand what they do in lakshmi puja instead of enjoying their favourite super hero. If the film is good, these logics will not matter. If film is below Avg, then business will start crashing on Monday itself. So, if they release the film on Friday (Nov 1), even if the film is Avg, the weekend business itself will make sure the venture is break even for the makers (means it will do a min of 135 to 140 Cr business). I think, Sr Roshan is extremely confident about the product, even studio talk is good, hopefully it will cross the much needed 200 cr like CE (film with this kind of effort will need min of 200 cr to make every body associated with them happy)

  56. Agree there Satyam. After employing kris gethin for the ‘body’ and another chick (think its johanssen) for ‘diet’, the benefits are that the stuff gets done and after paying a fat cheque, the ‘milestones’ are met. But being a goal directed regimen, these changes are fast tracked to within 10 or 12 weeks or so, before the ‘expert’ mose onto other assignments (& clients!)
The body transition is far from natural (!) anyways but the anabolism /catabolism/bmr etc does get thrown off usually..
The other ‘conflict’ here is that on one hand, hritik needs to get the ‘buff’ superhero physique which he has done well to do in a short time BUT unlike Henry Cavill, Hritik is ALSO required to DANCE and also cavort/prance around with PC & kangs..
So the ‘buff bulk’ WITH the dancing does put some ‘conflict’
Ps: note how the BODY BALANCING of hritik isn’t what it used to be –this is usually the FIRST to get affected in fast steps..
Having said that, hritik is doing well to dance like that with all that bulk …but it’s not exactly like KNPH …

        Nov 2nd = 32 to 37 crore
        Nov 3rd = 33 to 37 crore

Why then did both of them issue sound-bytes saying they ‘believed’ in content and trending and hence losing out on a week-end was not such a big deal? Be honest and say that ‘money’ matters first and rest is secondary. All that uber-patriotic talk of VFX in Swades’ Red Chillies is hog-wash. Today in Hi-fi — maybe elsewhere too but definitely the virus is more wide-spread in Hi-fi — all that matters is an entry into those disgusting cro(who)re clubs.

So all the ‘Laxmi-puja’ theory that everybody was espousing for so many years including these 2 guys is a sham?

And I am not actually trying to ‘blame’ them on an individual level. But this is a fine example of what happens when the MAJOR/SOLE metric of any industry becomes monetary. Third rate practices of increasing ticket prices, cutting out competition, ‘hogging’ all the screens kicking out regional cinema (I truly wished MNS had further twisted SRK’s and Shetty’s ba!@s when they tried their best to cut the shows of the super-hit Marathi film DUNIYADARI in Bombay and Pune).

Sooner or later, Tigmanshu or Motwane or all these avant-garde film-makers might also fall under ‘peer-pressure’ and start resorting to these things. I truly hope these guys retain their artistic sanity and I am proved wrong..

All the other stuff you’ve listed didn’t start just now (in perticular with CE release or any SRK release), it’s been like that for ages. What did Duniyadari make after the release of CE since Duniyadari retained most if not all of it’s screen?

Why didn’t MNS boycott CE? (most likely, MNS pocketed some money out of it)?

Why didn’t theatre owners not show CE and show duniyadari only? (they want to make money too, they’re not running non-profit org)

        • I think these box office discussions have become so crazy that forget the total gross everyone’s obsessed with what a film will do the first day, second day, third day etc! Krrish will have a massive opening one way or the other. Whether it gets the biggest first day, second day, third day or not it will make up for any such deficit if the film is liked. This is not a case where a smaller film or a film not expected to open too big cannot quite make up the gap. At the stratospheric level at which Krrish will open or put differently once a certain initial threshold is reached the rest if about trending. Does it matter whether 3I was the absolute strongest on day 1? No! Because it still did 200. At the level at which Krrish opens it’s not going to be behind other big openers by much even assuming this is so and I am not convinced this is the case. But again to get to the larger point it’s not even about gross now, not even about week 1, not even about the first weekend but day 1! What next? How big is a film opening in the morning shows?! Not going after you incidentally, just making a larger point. All discussions about a film are simply about this stuff and more and more intensely focused on this stuff. This is because for many people here are all kinds of agendas. They’re anxious because they’re not sure how well a film will do starring their favorite or relative to one starring their favorite. Then there is another group (sometimes there’s overlap too) where any discussion of consequence on a film’s quality (or lack thereof) is settled at the box office. So whether it’s about stars or actors of films everything becomes a balance-sheet where you needly add up the figures and you arrive mechanically at the truth about movies or stars. My point here isn’t just that this is unhealthy taken to such absurd extremes but that it does not even reflect the truth on any industry!

There seems to be simply no end to this disgusting trend of twit-orgasming of trade-p(or)undits writing down 1st day, 1.5 day, 2.45 days’ collections! And look how people are falling prey! Z is happy that the release is pre-poned. Huh? Even the audience is falling prey to such baser metrics! With such unhealthy atmosphere, the gap between BO and quality is simply getting wider..and there will be a day when the twain will be divorced bitterly!

What kind of a logic is this WHY, WHY, WHY questioning on issues? My whole point is HOW everybody -actors/producers/distributors — is falling prey to this disease. Not the mechanics of when and what!! Which are inconsequential and taking the discussion to an all-together different terrain. My point is that SRK and RS decided that they need to scuttle a regional film — that too one that was doing very well at BO — for more screens for their film. The ORIGIN of this thought itself is repellent. What followed, who did what, is immaterial to the bigger point.

          ==================================================

The party’s film unit claimed the SRK-starrer was demanding single cinemas across the state at the expense of Duniyadari that is still drawing in the audience and raking big moolah. Their consternation being that at the cost of a successfully running Marathi film, theatres cannot be coerced to screen the Hindi film.

you think questioning “WHY” is not logical but I think it needs to be answered because then that’ll make you think about the other side of the story.

I know answering these “EHY” will not help your causes of bringing SRK down so you want to avoid answering them.

          Don’t blame just the actor/producer/director.

The MNS, Theatre owner are more to be blamed because they’ll do anything for publicity and money.

        • “Z is happy that the release is pre-poned.”

Why should I be sad about it? It’s releasing on Friday which is the norm.

Nobody asked you to be sad about it. But what is there to be happy about it? How does it matter when the film releases and how much it makes in the first half hour or 8 hours or 70 hours? As an AUDIENCE, how is it important to YOU? Shouldn’t your
pre-rogative be whether the film works for you and whether the film is qualitative enough? Why do you have to break-down the days’ perceived collections? Ideally, it should make a difference to the trade guys – not you, the public! THIS is what I meant by everybody falling prey to this malaise of cr(wh)ore clubs.

When you talk of MNS, film-owners/distributors, do you have ANY proof that they are hand-in glove with SRK/Shetty? You first need to get the answers to the WHY yourself. Read the link I posted first – AFTER CE team agreed that they would not yank away Marathi film from single screens, MNS and the DUNIYADARI team agreed to let them screen CE. And your howlarious logic of asking what were MNS’ interests, theater owners’ interests is akin to the logic made idiotically famous by Yediyurappa on corruption: ‘ Many people before me were corrupt and they were let off. Why hold me in contempt if I am proved corrupt?!!” Yeah right. Why did Lal Bahadur Shashtri resign after a train accident when he was not the engineer or the signaller? Go figure.

It doesn’t matter what MNS or the theater-owner do. It matters how SRK/Shetty tried to or even thought of usurping those halls.

I think the ‘numbers’ disease has affected people so much that when somebody talks of quality and trending, it is equivalent to going around in circles.

Anyway, if even after saying so much, you still do not get the meat of my argument, it is better I let it go without wasting space here. You be happy with your numbers, I will be with my quality circles..

But they were born on this earth as human beings. In Hinduism we all contain elements of divinity.. atma is part of the paramatma , separated from it temporarily. That’s why no Hindu thinks it sacrilegious or blasphemous whe Sai Baba, Rajneesh or Ashram or XYZ calls himself Bhagwan. Christ might be divine, but Christ and God are not synonymous in Christianity. Ram and Krishna too are not synonymous with Bhagwan in Hinduism. Ram and Krishna are avatars. So are Vamana, Parsuram, Varaha the great boar, and The Fish. When one says Bhagwan one acnnot mean all of them. To some Buddha is an avatar. To others Sai Baba is an avatar. Ramkkrishna swa only Kalii as Bhagwan. You will not get anywhere goiing that path. Of course there is the major difference between the two prophets , Muhammad and Christ. Christians attribute divinity to Jesus, while Muslims consider Muhammad to be a great human being, but not divine. But that said, even to Christians, God and Christ are not synonymous. There is God and their is Christ, God’s son, born on this earth. Two different entities.

    • Utkal, just FYI, for traditional Christianity, God the Father and God the Son, are equal parts of the Holy Trinity. There is no distinction or hierarchy among them.
What you describe here- Christ being somehow subordinate to God the Father was the original Arian heresy which triggered the original Ecumenical councils and led to the development of the Nicene creed. This is essentially opposite to mainstream Christian belief.

Yoiu ahve givena link for the counter view, but none for the view you say is the original view. The holy trinity are all divine..but not equal. If they are equal, you should be able to replace God with the Holy Ghost as well!

I still maintain, even in traditional Christian theology, Christ is divine as well as human. He is the son of God.. and not God. The Son can not obviously be synonymous with the Father.

I’d in a sense disagree with both you and CG. There is no ‘traditional Christianity’. Both of you are essentially referring to the Council of Nicaea (325) and the ‘canonical’ decisions taken here regarding the nature of Christ and so forth. But this isn’t ‘traditional’ Christianity. It is Christianity as defined ‘canonically’ by an orthodoxy. The Arian ‘heresy’ for instance is one only judging by the standards of this orthodoxy. Much as the fixing of the Biblical canon is the work of other orthodoxies. The apocryphal literature here is huge. The question as always is: ‘who’ decides what is authoritative or not? There is a great deal of research that suggests all kinds of Christian beliefs (which is to say those that post-dated Jesus.. Nietzsche famously said that Jesus wasn’t a Christian!) in those early centuries that do not at all tally with the decisions taken at Nicaea. There are other very complicated questions here as well relating to every aspect of Christian belief in the age before such a canonization occurred. As with any faith or belief system this is always the tricky bit. One tends to term that as ‘origin’ which has been defined as such (or invented as such) by a later orthodoxy. So to accent what I said initially a bit differently there is ‘traditional Christianity’ but this only means some of the decisions taken at Nicaea and some later Lateran councils. It’s not ‘traditional’ if one believes no other kind of Christian belief ever existed or that Nicaea even represented the majority view of all earlier ages. CG is certainly correct in saying this is ‘mainstream’ belief. But all such beliefs have a history.

Though of course they are called ‘orthodox’ christians (almost like the Syrian christians in the Sourh in India). Would be interesting to know.

        • the Armenian Church is one of the oldest ones but it too has had a history. I wouldn’t really assume there’s anything ‘original’ here. Of course there isn’t ‘one’ original belief in this context. Such an origin assuming it ever existed is simply not accessible to history. Scholars are not even clear about the kind of historical figure Jesus was.

Jesus spoke Aramaic in all probability. But the New Testament was originally written in Greek. And so right there we have a question of translation and in effect after the fact. The Gospels come several years after Jesus, sometimes later than this. It isn’t even clear whether the Gospels were written by those whose names are attached to them.

        • You are probably right. The problem here is that the religion didn’t develop in the land of it’s origin and so any history or additional material is unavailable. One would have to search for clues there.

          Like

        • well it did develop in the land of its origin. The Middle east was once ‘Christian’ in large part, this was of course before Islam took over. But even where religions retain a continuous link with their ancient birth-places the history is not less murky. For instance Islam came about in the present day region of Saudi Arabia. Both the Wahabi kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Shiite orthodoxy of Iran believe that they are following the truer Islam! Meanwhile most of the Mideast isn’t even Wahabi!. This doctrine itself is only as old as the 19th century. It is the classic move of every orthodoxy to tie itself to any notion of origin and present everything else as a heresy!

All of these have very old histories, but it’s almost impossible to name any one as the oldest. The Syrian church uses Syriac in its liturgy, which is supposed to be very similar to Aramaic.

Also, a couple of bishops have been kidnapped, reportedly by rebels, and haven’t been heard of since. All of this adds up to a very real fear of chaos, as opposed to strong support for Assad.

  78. “If they are equal, you should be able to replace God with the Holy Ghost as well!” Any system that allows the equivalence of the holy trinity , allows for the Holy spirit to be God. If you study the triangle it shows that Father is God, Son is God, Spirit is God. and Father is not Son or Spirit. Son is not Father or Spirit. Spirit is not Father or Son. In any system where you can call the Son as God, you can call the Holy Spirit as God too. The triangle makes it mathematically clear.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity

But on the question of ‘homoiosis’ and ‘hypostasis’ and so on lots of other philosophical questions, especially those related to Greek thought, are implicated. Can’t get into all of this here but it’s not the simple mathematical equality you think it is. In other words they actually cannot be replaced with one another.

  79. “In other words they actually cannot be replaced with one another.” that is precisely what is represented in the triangle: Father is not Son or Spirit. Son is not Father or Spirit. Spirit is not Father or Son. They are separate entities. But each is independently God. Complex, yes, but that is what this school of thought believes.

    • Check out the ‘consubstantial’ hyperlink in that Trinity wikipedia link. I don’t wish to go in circles here but the question of the Trinity has kept theologians busy for ages. It’s not quite the simplistic deal you make it out to be! Notice how the word ‘co-equal’ is used in this regard and not ‘equal’. In addition also note how the word ‘trinity’ itself and hence all the mathematical connotations here really date back to Tertullian. Moreover the Shield of the Trinity figure is no older than the 13th century. Once again this is why it is important to be very careful and cautious when proceeding with these histories. One cannot assume that existing modes of belief are ‘original’. The Trinity is termed a ‘mystery’ precisely because it cannot be reduced to an easy mathematical equation!

Finally, your current formulation is very different from your earlier one. Many theologians would have no problem with the former but would not at all agree it implies the latter.

      ‘Pure’ religion

The word ‘pure religion’ is a tricky one and an oxymoron of sorts!
In different contexts (& intentions!) it can be used as
      ‘ancient’,
      ‘unspoilt’, or even
      ‘backward’, or
      ‘persecuted’ or
      ‘Reactionary’
      Or even more rabid /zealot

Also history books are usually the preserve and property (!) of the victors in wars and conflicts and subject to alteration and manipulation (I’m resisting the word ‘spin’ due to obvious reasons here lol)

How many books mentioned the genocide against Armenian Christians for eg?
Or the fact that Syrian or Egyptian Christians had to flee and are a persecuted lot –is it why the ‘religion’ is more of a ‘comfort’ mechanism or a clinging on to ones identity? Maybe…

Chroniologically, the Greek, Armenian Christianity was established quite early on-but again, when ones talking about centuries nobody knows for sure…

As for who is ‘son ‘ or ‘father’ amongst Christianity and Islam, it’s immaterial beyond a point as well. esp in the latter, in some cases, if there’s a term which can denote ‘above divine’ that’s perhaps the place given to their God. So it all depends on the ‘interpretation’ and how much religion ‘permeates’ into ones life and societal ethic-slowly becoming an all pervading monster rather than a guiding force.
So it’s also about ‘intensity’ though ‘flavour’ is important!
Iranian Islam has a different flavour from Malaysian
Just as Christianity in threatened Egypt, Syria is different from Bush’s America !!

  83. apex- here is a video containing some background music of Kites.

I just looked randomely on youtube. The 1st minute of this video contains the main track of the movie. If you watch the movie, this track is the main theme and it’s there throughout and especially in the most ‘poignant’ moments of the film.

Now compare it to Aniron of Lord of the Rings (especially from the 40 seconds mark where Enya’s vocals start):

Look, if the Roshans were making an out an out Bollywood movie, I wouldn’t have even pointed it out. But they were making an ambitious project targeting a worldwide audience and they even had a Hollywood cut by Brett Ratner for the audience there. KITES was a pathetic attempt at projecting Hrithik as someone who would fit the ‘mould’ of a Hollywood rom-com/action hero – a la Helmsworth or even Chris Pine. Hell, he could even replace Jim Caviziel in a prequel or sequel to THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (hey check me out in a beard! Ain’t I the mirror image of Christ’s pics that are sold on the bylanes of Churchgate??). It was an impossibly stupid and over-ambitious ‘advertisement’ for Hrithik Roshan – the supposed embodiment (according to the Indian press) of De Niro’s explosive talent and Pine’s sexual male- gaze. Hence the hilarious story of one minority community guy (Indian) in the business of providing ‘green-card/citizenship’ to another one (Mexican)! Yeah right. I am still searching for that Mexican woman here in DC that could marry me and get me the coveted card; coz this happens in such abundant majority!! The finale of Hrithik’s character spraying bullets on a rainy night dotted with a musical background is a direct lift from ROAD TO PERDITION.

Rakesh Roshan was so deluded that on a show he mentioned that he FIRMLY believed that KMG was an apt contender to be sent to the Oscars that year for – hold your breath – technical wizardry!! Till that time, I only considered Rakesh Roshan to be bald above his head..this breathtaking statement totally changed my perception. In a recent press conference for KRISHITT 3, Hrithik ‘proudly’ mentioned that his patriotic Dad was right from the word go adamant that all the VFX would be done in India. And then there were wolf-whistles from the ‘intelligent’ English-speaking Indian press and the Roshans could be seen basking in this ‘patriotic’ tsunami of applause.
For all I write, I might be simply wasting my time because the media-manipulated star-struck desi audience might still make KRISSH 3 a block-buster even if it has inferior aspects of film-making. And this will further delude the Roshans into thinking they are somehow at par with Hollywood in terms of the craft of film-making, especially in a technological sense. They will then extend the length — forcing the makers of SPECIES to stare in wonder!)– of Vivek Oberoi’s ugly tongue in KRISHH 4 and Rakesh will firmly believe that Hi-fi has stepped onto a newer technological era..

According to your ‘logic’, justice has been meted out since KITES flopped? Huh? So the audience became intelligent overnight? And so if KAHAANI is a success, suddenly there is ‘justice’ meted out to all those film-makers who consider screenplay and writing heroes rather than actors?

And if ‘brain’ need not be applied to any of Roshans’ enterprise, what is the need to boast of technology? After all, if the audience is brain-dead, why work day and night on VFX to ‘match’ the West? Anything goes right? Just have some VFX for name-sake..

There are many loop-holes in your argument, just as there are crater-sized plot and tech-holes in the K series of Roshan’s films..

Finally, as is the last resort (like that of an African-American guy crying ‘racism’ as soon as he is pulled over and caught with a cache of drugs), there is the numbers argument. Hey, the public spent money..so it worked. The film is a block-buster. Why have ‘angsty’ discussions??

Krrish 3 to have biggest ever release after Chennai Express, Besharam

Last updated on: October 17, 2013 13:39 IST

Bollywood is scaling new heights with every release.

With Chennai Express, we saw the widest ever launch of a movie in India. If the media grapevine is to be believed, Rakesh Roshan-directed Krrish 3, starring Hrithik Roshan in the titular role, will be released across 5000 screens worldwide.

Sources close to the development inform that Krrish 3 will see the widest domestic release, in 4,200 to 4,500 screens.

“Super-hero movies are pretty common place overseas and thus, the number of screens abroad may not be very high. The film should release in 500 to 550 screens abroad at the most,” informs a film industry insider on the condition of anonymity.

Independent distributor and trade analyst Suniel Wadhwa concurs and adds, “The Krrish movies (Krrish, Krrish 3) are the only successful super-hero Bollywood films after Mr India.

“Their popularity as a brand has increased to a point that they are being dubbed in regional languages like Telugu and Tamil, which are supposed to be huge markets for this genre. Krrish 3 is the only movie releasing around Diwali and can go upto 4,500 screens for domestic markets ( approximate break up: Hindi- 4000-4200, Telugu- 300-350 and Tamil- 200-250 ).”

This will be the fourth film starring Hrithik Roshan after Krrish, Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar to be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

In August this year, Chennai Express, co-produced by Disney UTV and Red Chilies Entertainment, was released across 3,700 screens in India and 750 abroad.

Later, on October 2, the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Besharam also got an equally wide release. While Chennai Express went on to break box office records, Besharam could not capitalise on the advantage of the scaled up release and bombed at the box office.

Krrish 3 is the third film in the franchise that started off with the ET (Hollywood film) inspired Koi Mil Gaya, which was then followed by the sequel Krrish. Both the earlier films have been big hits at the box office and pundits are hoping for a hat trick from the father-son duo.

The film is produced by FilmKraft and will be distributed by it as well in India. Overseas, the movie will be distributed by Eros International.

It is estimated that the distributor picked up the film for Rs 20 crore. The film has been given a U/A certificate by the censor board without any objections. It is a 152 minute film.

    • I think the 4500 screen is just nonsense. CE pretty much had the widest release possible as it released when there were no English movies, no Tamil, No Telugu movies available. CE released on many many screens in TN and Nizam and still had around 3500 screens. Krish will have pretty much the same number as TN is choc-a-block with Arambam, All in All Azaghuraja and Pandian Naadu might also make it that week. And if you have a Thala movie finding it difficult getting screens then Krish has no hope. So TN itself will have not more than 100 screens. And the same will happen in Kerala also. For the rest of the country I dont think all of a sudden 1000 screens have sprouted suddenly in 2 months. And you are going to have English movies playing on the screens during Diwali time.
And There will be Telugu releases too in Diwali…

Also the last para is ridiculous “It is estimated that the distributor picked up the film for Rs 20 crore”. The cost will be around 200 crore and not 20…they have a 0 missing there!!!

  91. On Krrish I must say a lot of the advertising has surprised me. Or perhaps I should say the direction Rakesh Roshan has gone in. Because much more than previous films this clear seems to be a compendium of various genre tropes from the mutants to the robots to the building demolitions (!) and so forth. To repeat an older point, and to indulge in a longer aside, I always find it fascinating the degree to which these US franchises with very specific stories and gestures and myths get translated into these omnibus moments in Bollywood so that they’re all equally fair game and they all work in the very same universe! It is almost as if someone were to do an Indian epic where stories and characters from the Mahabharata rubbed shoulders with those from the Ramayana. Or better still Arjun and Raavan have a bash ’em up or something! This is in a way the colonized striking back. Once upon a time you had Hollywood with its various Orientalist fantasies working in similar ways. So India would for instance be represented as a whole collection of tropes and types in very inconsistent ways (historically and otherwise). The ‘truth’ here of course was the abstraction itself. India or China or ‘Arabia’ were representations of fantasies. There was always this neverland quality to them. With something like Krrish you get all this from the other side. Not just the bleeding of one superhero/fantasy trope into another but also the reconfiguration of all kinds of ‘Americana’ (elements of popular culture, nationalist myths of the US nation-state et al) or a re-appropriation of those moments to ‘design’ this Indian superhero (who then proceeds to Singapore! The immediate Indian sphere of influence has to be taken care of first!). But all of this is ‘truer’ in a way than the SRK ambition of directly accessing the ‘West’. which is to say that in the SRK kind of imagining a step is missed. You cannot go directly from Bombay to Berlin (and no Don remake can bridge this gap!), that’s simply implausible. But you can redefine an Indian ascendancy within its immediate sphere of influence. Here Shankar must once be introduced. The way he marries a certain IT fixation with the same fantasy genres (often invoking the Indian mythologized past in the bargain). Once again there is a method to the madness whereas with those other films (as with something like Game or with hrithik’s own Kites in a different genre) there is the short-cut which doesn’t work. In these instances the Indian literally operates in place of the ‘American’. Not even fantasy can explain this substitution! Because fantasy too is most potent when it attaches itself to a plausible narrative.

But to get back to what I started out with the problem with Krrish is that despite having all of this in place the resulting films (even if passable so far) are utterly and desperately mediocre in every sense imaginable. And it’s disappointing to see Rakesh Roshan go even further in the cheesy direction this time around. He might well have the last box office laugh and I certainly wouldn’t bet against him here but the advertising here reeks of a certain badness that I think far surpasses anything the comparable moments from the first two films represented at those points in time. Krrish was never cutting edge but there was something blandly (and I mean really bland!) comforting or at least accessible about these narratives. On K3 though there’s a sense of trying to do too much. And the more you do along certain lines the more the mediocrity becomes manifest. In a sense we’re seeing something similar with D3. It worked best as a more modest effort in the first installment. The second one got more ambitious but also worse in certain obvious ways (hrithik skidding in that desert early on!) which is to say it just looked worse than the first one because it attempted more but with no real apparent upgrades on any technological level. And we’re seeing the same play out with D3 (though we haven’t yet seen a proper trailer here it would be even odder to have spectacular trailers preceded by atrocious teasers!). Once again perhaps this too is enough to keep everyone happy and get those massive grosses. But somehow neither film on the advertising so far (more Krrish than Dhoom because again we haven’t seen anything substantial with the latter and it would be truly surprising if Aamir has agreed to nothing more than a D2 kind of deal) seems to be looking like the sort of deal that will truly strike a chord and trend very well. These films might well trend than most others around but whether they’ll repeat their past benchmarks is another matter. Krrish the last time around did very roughly three times its week 1 number. Dhoom did 2.5 times its own. In terms of the initial both still look to be record-breaking and perhaps just being simply entertaining is enough to put up extraordinary numbers. But certainly with Krrish I think something better might have been attempted. With Dhoom there is still the chance that despite this early stuff something might well have been. Have enough respect for Aamir to hold out for that chance here.

Despite everything I’d still for certain reasons have Krrish doing well than not. But what’s frustrating is the degree to which the truly abysmal is embraced by Bollywood even on such big ventures. It’s amazing that there’s no ambition whether in a narrative sense or a technological one associated with these mega-productions. These producers/directors simply wish to emulate Hollywood but have no clue as to how this can really be done. Yes they don’t have 200m budgets ($). All the more reason to be imaginative, not less!

‘Krrish 3’, the caped crusader is in trouble and his two leading ladies are the cause. Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut are paired opposite Hrithik Roshan in the third instalment of the superhero franchise and buzz is that the two actresses share a rather cold vibe.

And TOI has it that just weeks before ‘Krrish 3’s release, Priyanka has refused to be seen in public with Kangna, throwing all their planned promotional appearances into jeopardy. A source told this newspaper, “Priyanka was out of town when the film’s music was launched and the event was attended by the rest of the cast. However, things changed when she came back from Los Angeles. A long itinerary of promotion is being planned involving all the actors but when Priyanka was told about the plans, she told her team that she doesn’t want to share the podium with Kangna.”

Though the Roshans are trying to make peace between the two, as of now Priyanka and Kangna are set to make solo appearances on TV shows. An official from a TV channel where both the actresses will be seen over the coming weeks told us, “Both of them are important to the channel. However, for this coming week, we have Kangna making an appearance on the show hosted by Salman Khan. She won’t be promoting the film there but has been invited as a celebrity guest. Priyanka will make a solo appearance the week after. But these plans are suspect to last minute changes.”

Though Priyanka and Kangna remained unavailable for comment, the film’s producer and director Rakesh Roshan maintained an optimistic front saying, “Kangna is not upset and we are starting our promotions full throttle from the 20th.”

Henry:”The worst part is Hrithik plays the role too earnestly. When you go that OTT, you can’t play the characters straight.” I think it is just the opposite. Only if you play a chracter with some degree of sinserity that audience can but into it. Otherwise is all so blah…. That precisely is problem with films like JBJ, Tashan or Besharam. You dont invest the charcater with any sincerity, the audience is not invested in the character, and not involved in the story. . THe Obviously they are bored…A film like 3 Idiots works because Aamir, Madhavan and Shram are so sincere. Same with Anil Kapor in mr India. MOgambo and Sridevi can be spoofy. But the protagonist have to have a strong streak of earnestness.

    Like

    • I don’t think your definition of earnestness matches Henry’s. His I should add is the more general one. You’re defining it as a certain involvement in and commitment to the part one is doing no matter how ridiculous or at least implausible it might seem. No one would disagree with this. However earnestness is doing the same in a ‘stupid’ way where minimally the effort shows and more importantly in this context one seems to be serious about the part in a way disproportionate to its ‘essence’. To use less garbled syntax you can’t approach Krrish as if you were trying out for Scorsese! Bachchan the greatest even on this score illustrates this ‘difference’ perfectly. When you compare what he does in say Kaala Pathar to how he handles AAA both performances are supreme in very different ways. But the AAA performance never gives off the vibe of an actor who’s somehow approaching it the way he did Kaala Pathar. Of course Bachchan was never earnest anywhere but the point is that certain kinds of parts require a performance which is disguised as non-performance. The superhero part though is not even like AAA. It just requires a kind of ‘solidness’. If you try to ‘perform’ too much here you lose the part. The only exceptions here are when you have a fine actor attempting the part and it is then rewritten to accommodate the actor’s skills and/or persona. So for instance Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark. Now one could convincingly argue that he’s a far cry from the Stark of the comic books. However he pulls off this redesign very well. He gives Stark more ‘character’ in many ways or makes him more accessible. On the other hand you have those grandly operatic Joker performances that are not easy to pull off and require proper actors (at least if the Joker is to be given center stage) to pull off. In contrast Bale doesn’t overdo Bruce Wayne. He’s obviously an important actor (even if I’m not a fan of his rather ‘hard’ persona) but he doesn’t try to bring his ‘thespian’ skills to the part. With krrish on the other hand (and it’s not just a problem here.. Hrithik precisely because he’s not an actor in any true sense approaches all parts like Krrish or brings the same earnestness everywhere.. though this works better on some occasions) there is really no scope to do either the grandly operatic or the Downey-like fluid act. It just requires the actor to show up. Earnestness is never a good thing in cinema. But one shouldn’t be confused about what this term really means. Ironically the parts that truly require earnestness in Bollywood are played in ‘mentally challenged’ fashion by most actors including most recently Ranbir Kapoor in the initial portions of Rockstar.

      • Not so sure of that anymore. This is not a movie where 100 cr will get you a hit tag. The kind of money involved it needs something around 150 crs to be average and 200 for a hit tag. And you dont get that kind of gross unless the movie strikes a chord. I have a feeling this is going to tank after seeing the trailors

However cheesy KMG and Krish were, they had a certain amount of innocence in it. There was a novelty factor of seeing an Indian super hero too and the movies though not to my taste, I can understand why they did well. Even the portrayal of that mentally challenged guy didnt grate as much that time. But this one looks like a rehash of every super hero movie there has been and a poor one at that. And I agree with Satyam above that Hritik here seems too earnest as a superhero. Look at him flaring his nostrils under the mask. And this has been an issue with Hritik many times before. He always has to ‘act’, he has to ‘dance’ as if he knows someones looking. There is an exaggeration in everything he does. For once i want Hritik to stop ‘acting’ and just be natural the way he was in ‘Luck By Chance’ or a ‘Fiza’ or a ‘Kashmir’. Obviously no one is going to Krish3 to see acting , but these small things stand out of place even in such movies. And I am still reeling at this old guy portrayal. To be fair to Hritik its the same as he did in KMG maybe I have evolved since KMG and cannot stand it anymore.

        • “To be fair to Hritik its the same as he did in KMG maybe I have evolved since KMG and cannot stand it anymore”
This is far more likely. I felt the same when I saw KKHH and watch it now. Back then I could get sucked into the mediocrity, now I run away from it.
KMG back in 2003 was an innocent film and I liked Hrithik in that film. Have not even seen Krrish, but I’m sure I am not missing a lot. Those 3 years between 03-06 was enough to grow and know the Roshans can’t pull off a superhero movie to the standards we are use too.
On Krrish 3, I sense this film could still work but it has probably come a little late in Hrithik’s career. He should have closed this chapter of his career 3 years ago. Strike while the iron was still hot and his physical attributes could still pull it off. Not to say he is too old…but just feels a little odd 7 years later.
The music is dire … really really poor. The previews are lukewarm. Yet, the main thing a large chunk of the audience is going to be kids. And they are neither into music or critically viewing or lambasting previews. Pretty sure kids will still want to see it, so pretty sure there will be a few upset parents who will need to sit through this.
Hrithik’s career is rather lethargic. He just seems to have been his biggest and best on debut and those “fireworks” have never been reached, 2006 was close but the follow up took 2 years and by that time he lost his momentum. He doesn’t “need” a success here because quite simply he is not a threat in the rat race. Neither does he do those critically or loved films ala Aamir nor does he blaze the box office with monster grosser after another like Salman nor does he frequently do films ala Akshay. He just misses out on each box maintaining a decent score everywhere. Not enough.

        • My prediction at the beginning of the year was a 200 crore + monster here but now I would down-size it too the 140-160 crore range. Some would say that is a success but I’d beg to differ. The Roshans don’t come together to do OK. KNPH was a craze, KMG the biggest grosser in 2003, Krrish the biggest grosser since Gadar and Kites though a failure had grand ambitions to be an “international” success. They come together for big success or in simple words to create history. This one does not look like it will do that and technically, it does not look like it will be setting any new standards either.

        • 200 should still be doable with a monster initial. Which they should get here. Despite the previews there can’t be too many people missing the film. Now unless it tanks right away (always a possibility with any film) and assuming it can put up ETT/CE type numbers (which certainly was expected for this film before these previews showed up) 200 would seem to be on the cards. Because I don’t think it will fade like ETT if it does similar numbers. This genre has certainly had small center strength in the past. What is of course true is that if does much less than those two films in the initial run it would indicate some essential weakness and then it would be very hard to imagine a 200 scenario or perhaps even a 180 one. This is the sort of film designed for the biggest possible initial and based on the past it ought to trend well. But if it fails the first test it’s in rough waters. I do agree that 140-160 is too low for Krrish. You can’t do that much less than YJHD!

        • this is the fairest assessment of Hrithik’s career. I would just add that he does seem to get his big numbers every time he has the right kind of project (though obviously Filmkraft has always been a singular deal for him) and he might well do so again with this current installment. I think your larger point though is the important one in that with his first film he created the kind of hysteria from which everything else (perhaps naturally) seemed like a downhill ride. In 2006 he had a rare chance to resuscitate things in a big but he dropped the ball and that post-2006 period might have been his most important lapse. Because you hardly ever see a star who’s doing very well in key genres suddenly take a long break for no apparent reason and then return with films that even on paper couldn’t have been huge grossers. And yes it’s also true that as the actor grows older and certainly loses some chances along the way the only real shot at becoming a definitional star comes by way of serious reinvention. As you pointed out you either do multiple films and rewrite the box office with each success or you have a critical-commercial success, something that truly counts. Obviously this trajectory is different for different stars. If the point is to establish that Hrithik is one of the biggest openers, specially on the right day, well that proposition has never been in doubt. That he’s a massive star is not what’s being debates. But the post-KNPH period seemed to suggest something more and Hrihtik has never taken it to the next level. Put differently he’s never had a Salman-like (present day) run. He’s not going anywhere but the idea that after all these years he nonetheless needs Krrish to prove a certain point does indicate some weakness. He clearly hasn’t found the same sort of box office goldmine elsewhere.

Quite surprised though you never saw Krrish!

They have romances folded into them, but those always felt like afterthoughts, secondary to the film’s actual interests. “Innocence” aside, I will say though that the first and second films seemed at least focused in a way that this absolutely doesn’t. This latest one seems to want to cram in a bit of every kind of Hollywood superhero/disaster film and it just looks all over the place. Kind of reminds me of Raimi’s final Spiderman film, which bit off way more than it could chew.

So Dhoom 3 is probably going to be just as superficial, every bit as bad as the previous films but it also doesn’t look like a nosedive from that mediocre bar. As an aside I have less faith than you in Aamir’s script sense salvaging things, at least not in any substantial way given there are certain basic rules to adhere to here. It makes sense that this might be the best script of the series because Aamir’s around but the best script of the Dhoom series isn’t really a great hook for me! I’m basically in it though simply for the Abhishek-Aamir moment.

        • I agree with a lot here. The franchise was always cheesy but it was also modest. The last krrish for instance was more or less like a 60s Kashmir romance for most of its first half. In the second half the action took over but things were still kept rather basic. In a sense one does understand why there is this ‘too much’ syndrome in the current film. As Jay pointed out Hrithik should have had a follow-up within 3 years or so. he waited too long. There’s been so much since that the anxiety to match box office marks set by other stars but also to satisfy a multiplex audience increasingly fed on Hollywood and finally of course the usual rush to outdo earlier movies in the franchise, all of this has made them throw everything against the wall on this one. Hollywood too does this all the time. Which is why relatively few sequels are worthwhile. Paradoxically even a movie premised on SFX cannot just be a collection of such moments. We saw this recently in gravity. The most dazzling SFX and yet a relatively basic storyline where the director is even more importantly not at all afraid to not crowd out his film in any other sense. And not surprisingly this is the best trending Hollywood film in anything approaching this genre since Avatar or TDK.

And so once again even in this sense if they don’t get the truly monster initial (and not just a fantastic one) they will have failed a test right off the bat. Having said that it might well be that Hrithik is potent enough in this kind of franchise to paper over some of these problems. In other words you might not see the superb trending of KMG or the previous Krrish but you might see enough basic box office strength on account of the star and the whole sequel thing to power it to a big if not historic total. This certainly cannot be ruled out, specially with a film that caters so much to a very young demographic. I said this recently but Ra One still did as much as its number probably because of this factor. In any other genre we would have seen an even faster fade. In any case hrithik’s ultimate and even quintessential appeal doing this sort of thing can scarcely be overestimated.

This movie can get the biggest 1st week if liked but getting the biggest 3 day weekend will be a major challenge as it is Pre-Diwali. Thats why roshans had planned to release it on a Monday initially. Having said that and having seen how movies releasing on a mid week has done, it still makes more sense to release on the Friday but it wont be putting a 100 crore figure in those 3 days simply because it is Pre-Diwali.

        • The pre-diwali release is quite risky. The Sat-Sun business will be surely affected due to Diwali falling on Sunday. So the risk here is that if it gets panned heavily on its release Friday, and drops after the weekend, it will miss out on the guaranteed business of the post-diwali period which will be from Monday onwards. Roshan must be very confident to release this pre-diwali.

    • Let’s put it this way. Going by the trending of the previous film this current one would have to do 375 crores! How? The older one did roughly 26-28 crores in week 1 and 70-75 overall. Assuming a 130 crore week 1 you can do the math. But even if that standard seems too exacting doubling the initial isn’t a bad standard at all. That would still put the onus of a 260 crore plus gross on the film. of course if it’s 140 crores or so the numbers increase at the other end too. I’ve said all of this before. But 250 would still be a very good number judging how films fare these days even with very high initials. So I wouldn’t run the film down on such a gross though it would not have trended as well as either KMG or Krrish.

The same holds for D3. To repeat the trending of the previous film it would have to first off come up with the biggest week 1 number. So anything less than 140 or 150 (or whatever) in the holiday season would be a bit subpar anyway. But assuming that higher base it would need 400 crores or more just to repeat the trending of the previous film. Again using a lower ‘doubling’ standard we still need 280-300 from the film. I think these latter standards are not at all unreasonable for both films given what YJHD and CE just did. That both will get off to those big initial starts is not debatable. The rest remains to be seen. But these standards are perfectly fair ones.

So actually I am lowering the bar for Krrish. Now if you want me to call it a hit at any number north of 150 you’ll be disappointed! You’ll have to buy that snake oil from Taran and co! You don’t have the third film in a hit franchise (Krrish, Dhoom) to just match YJHD or get a bit higher than that! Even matching CE is not a big deal because no one expected as much from CE. It surprised in many ways but it wasn’t pegged to be that kind of grosser. and so even CE is hardly an ultimate standard of any sort.

    • I would say it needs to match or go past CE to be considered as a success as CE is a lesser costly movie and came with much lesser expectations. The 250 crore number is a good target. I feel this will make between 150 and 200 crores.

So, if I had to pick one of the three, I’d pick PK, based purely on the strength of its director’s past work. A non-festive release is the only deterrent, but 3 Idiots showed how a strong WOM film can keep going for weeks. But I’m certainly not ruling out Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3 at this stage. In five days time, there will be enough evidence to take a more informed view on one of them.

When anybody questions why bring in GRAVITY or AVATAR to the discussion table when we are talking of an ‘Indian’ super-hero, the above talkathon should be a brain-opener..
