Great news, i will take my daughter, brother kids, sisters kids and entire family on Jan 3rd. I want to them to witness / rewitness Bachchans era…. I pray God for Sholay 3D’s success, just imagine if it crosses 100 crores, producers might think of re releasing the classics instead of remaking them like some of my favs Laawaris, DON, Mokaddar ka Sikandar, Deewar, amar akbar antony, Hum, Khuda Gawah, Trishul, Kala pathar, Abhimaan, Agnipath, Namak halal, Natwarlal etc… did i miss any classics of Big B?
You missed many .. Zanjeer, Kabhi Kabhi, Shaan, Suhaag, Naseeb, Coolie, Akhree Rasta, Shahenshah, Mr Natwarlal, Namak Halaal, Satte pe Satta … and I am sure I am forgetting atleast 10 more classics .. 🙂
But be realistic, Sholay 3D will release on 400 Screens and most probably it can do business in range of 30-40 Crore .. and this is a success considering costs(Around 7 Crore) involved.
Watched the promo many times and still spell bind .. who can believe this is 1975 Bollywood movie ?? Still looks so much ahead of contemporaries .. and absolute grand entertainment.
Yes, even for one such as myself who hadn’t grown up with Sholay even a cursory comparison with some of that films contemporaries shows an uncommon, distinctive level of technical accomplishment. My favorite thing about the film is its grand technique and some of its superbly choreographed action sequences.
weirdly it’s never been one of my very favorite films. I don’t find it hard to understand why it is simply the central Indian film (at least among commercial ones) but I don’t quite love it as much as everyone else does.
This is strange coming from you. I witnessed the era when sholay was fav topic of discussion every evening .. be it among friends, family get together or any social gathering … mouthing its dialogue and discussing each and every character was fav time pass for half of India back in 80’s (I am sure even in 70’s it would be same). In terms of technical fineness and shot taking .. if we exclude Shaan, it is unmatched and stands tall even after 37 years now. I don’t see any reason for not most loving movie ever made.
I didn’t say I didn’t like it! Nor do I have anything but admiration for every aspect of its filmmaking and including its technical standards. All I’m saying is I’d take Deewar and Trishul and Kaala Pathar (to name a few examples) over it!
Sholay is very good but I would take Trishul, deewar over Sholay too. I also do not think too highly of Suhaag, Yaarana, Khuda Gawah, Pukar, Coolie, Dostana, Shahenshah, Shaan, Lawaaris , Kabhi Kabhi and Mr Natwarlal. Zanjeer and Black also for some reason will not make it to AB’s best movies.
My favorite among the ones you have mentioned in no order have to be Agneepath, Khakee, Don, Trishul, Deewar, Kala Pathar, Majboor, AAA, Aakhree Raasta, Faraar, Silsila, Satte Pe Satta, Namak Halaal, Hum. I also love Naseeb, Do aur Do paanch and Muqaddar ka Sikandar for the masala content though not as much as the ones above.
I’ve always loved the fairy tale world of Natwarlal. Find Lawaaris to be one of his strongest works once you leave aside the absolute greats. Shaan is one of the coolest Hindi films ever and time has no dimmed it in this sense. And Suhaag is my single favorite Desai film possibly in a tie with Naseeb. Again much like Sholay I have very oddly never been a massive fan of AAA!

I saw Sholay on the big screen back in 1982. Will need to fly to India to catch this again on the big screen..lol. Unquestionably, this one will click big.
And a roadblock in Dhoom3 third week collections for sure..lol.
Some how, i am not happy with the trailer edit. Hope, the film is directors cut. I would love it if they re release Shaan, Mokaddar ka Sikander, Sharabhi Amar Akbar Antony , Trishul, Deewar, Abhimaan and of course DON (I want this generation to witness the Vintage Bachchan, although DON’s role is only 10 mins in the movie, i was completely blown out by his style and first 15 – 20 mins takes involving DON…) forget Khans, not even Hrithik (who according to media is the most stylish actor) can carry the suit, the attitude (including the mesmerising voice and walk). I am surprised even Amithabh did not do a full fledged negative (stylish) role like DON… but still, even today people will take the reference of DON (the role which lasted for only 10-15 mins on screen)..
Yeah it’s truly unnecessary when the original work itself is a visual treat. That said if this is the only way one gets the chance to see Sholay on a big screen, I’ll take it.
On the posters it also mentions the film is being released in 2D. Haven’t sat through the above video or seen mention elsewhere but I wonder if the 2D presentation also includes restoration work.
Not a very good idea when the original is still a benchmark! Don’t like the 3D glasses gig. W/o Ramesh Sippy’s nod it’s not the same. He was the reason why Sholay is what it is.
Shaan was very enjoyable. AB’s greatest are Don, AAA, KP, Deewar, Trishul.

That was a great moment. And people like Farah Khan should see that scene and learn how to tread that fine line between a spoof and a homage. And there have been a lot of attempts in Bollywood as far as making these wacky middle cinema films, but nothing really matches the Sujoy Ghosh film. Also think this Vishal-Shekhar’s best soundtrack.
An exercise in futility really, this – none of the ‘actuals’ present and presided by a duo that are separated anyway. The whole thing is a bit underwhelming with poor audio and lackadaisical press.
People have so many queries about Sholay – this could have a major ‘people’ show. Oh well…
Even Shaan has better 3D qualification than Sholay.
Am over the moon with this news!!! I’ll be in India then, and can’t believe I’d be watching Amitabh Bachhan on the big screen (3D or not hardly matters).
Who would have thought this would happen in 2014? I don’t care if R Sippy gave the nod, or whatever. Watching it in a cinema Hall is something one didn’t expect.
And it’s not a remake!!!!! Hope I get the tickets. 🙂
Somehow I have never felt the urge to revisit Sholay. I mean, it is a perfectly written, perfectly acted, and perfectly directed film. Maybe it is this perfection that is the problem. It yields NOTHING new not repeat viewing. There is nothing that I get in second viewing that I did not get in the first viewing.
I have only seen Sholay twice. On the other hand, I have lost count of how many times I have seen Satte Pe Satta and Namak Halaal, both films have endless repeat value for me.
Agree, the absolute pinnacle of BigB comedy is in these two movies. My SattePSatta and Namak Halal VHS tapes were worn out by the time I left my hometown for college.
I dont want to use words like best Indian movie ever made since it is contentious but I can say with complete confidence that this is the Bollywood movie I have enjoyed watching the most and seen the most number of times. A somewhat of a close second is 3I.
For mainstream film makers, I am somewhat of a low hanging fruit!
I cannot beleive some of the comments of SHOLAY, it was a wicked film,infact it broke all boxoffice records..Amitabh & Dharmendra was best pair ever,I watch it atleast 38 times,released in 1975 and in menerva cinema for 5 years and that time it was a record…I am glad that it to released in 3D,another 38 times will do for me..

Contrary to the normal belief that cult film ‘Sholay’ belongs to its scriptwriters Javed Akhtar and Sailm Khan, the writers say it is the other way round as the film is promoting them even 38 years after its release.
“I don’t generally watch my old films, I get embarrassed. But yesterday I saw ‘Sholay’ again. When you see your old movies, meet old friends, there is a kind of nostalgia and sweetness in it,” Akhtar told reporters Thursday at the trailer launch of “Sholay 3D”.
“These kind of films happens only once in a century. ‘Sholay’ doesn’t belong to us, we belong to ‘Sholay’,” he added.
Salim Khan said: “Yes, as Javed rightly said, ‘Sholay’ is still promoting us, even after so many years.”
Javed Akhtar also thanked late GP Sippy, who produced ‘Sholay’, which made new records when it came out in 1975.
He said: “I must thank GP Sippy, who used to think out of the box. He was the captain of the ship. He was a big-hearted person and a gambler. The film would have never been made without him.”
Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film starred Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini and Amjad Khan.
‘Sholay’ has now been converted into 3D and it will come out in the new form Jan 3 next year.

What I saw was ‘I Support AAP’. That was enough for me though the Deewar posters didn’t hurt.
