Dhoom 3 had another huge day as it collected in the 20-21 crore nett range as per warly estimates taking its total to around 136 crore nett. The collections on Tursday edged up a little in the metros and other multiplex dominated cities while others stayed the same or dropped a little. The multiplex areas benefited in the evening due to next day being a holiday.

The film is likely to add another 40-45 crore nett over the next two days to have a first week total in the range of 175-180 crore nett which is 25% more than anything else before.

just other day i saw someone bringing shutter island and i told him look here one madhumati is enough similarky forget nolan or anything to lure today’s teen taste and the repackaging look here first:

i am surprised at someone writing how certain star worked on script and all and that huge bachchan fan forget the structure on which it is built :

years back there was a movie called akayla done by big b

a cop who is alone( like jai dixit) looking to get a shrewd criminal who gets away untill it is revealed he has twin (much ahead of its time ….its the cop who lost everything but here its reverse but similarly…

other recent nolan stuff recuperated much later to suit multiplex audiences….

Rockstar: So going by your logic, Nolan stole from Akayla, and cannot be given any credit for the script of The Prestige?

Yes, the central premise of Dhoom 3 is taken from The Prestige. So? It does not mean one does not have to work on the script of Dhoom 3. The central idea of Ram-Leela is from romeo and Juliet. That does not mean Bhnasali did not have to work on its script.

Yes. The central device is the same. But Dhoom 3 and The Prestige are two completely different films.

have you seen the famous act it was boy in double lifted from prestige and much before we had that in india in form of akayla but packaging and structure of context was a straight lift from prestige

the heist on line on now you see me and the famous trishul angle:

“the guy whose mother was wronged came back to take revenge which means destruction of wealth of guy who did it”

input can also come from someone who is very much associated with other 2 film or a director whose last film had a central character called bachchan pandey from allahbad

  14. I watched Dhoom 3 today.

    SPOILERS

Its a perfect entertainer even if it is not a perfect movie logically.

Its like watching some surreal stuff, some fairy tale. A dream.

The hero of the film is Chicago and its skyline. Its giant skyscrapers, its roads, its colorful treelined roads. It was simply awesome on big screen and head spins sometimes. The city shone like a diamond studded giant jewel during night time sequences with the skyscrpaers lit and glowing.

Katrina not only looked gorgeous, she acted through her dances. Its a perfect role for her. She failed in ETT but scored here. Her dances were simply out of the world.

Not even one song, one dance was boring. Every song gave entertainment and viewing and hearing pleasures.

Abhishek Bachchan had a good role and he impressed with his serious police act. I do not know why he is criticised so much. He and aamir were equal in their together scenes. No one overshadowed the other.

Uday was controlled and not bad. He provided some light moments.

The boy who played younger aamir had done a commendable job. And Shroff still looked sexy.

Aamir impressed when he took on his differently abled brother. His face did not contort so many times as critics said. He did his job perfectly whether it is acting or dance.

Kids came in droves with their parents and everyone enjoyed the movie. The scenes were gripping and edited well and I did not find the movie to be too long.

There were some interesting scenes but I dont want to spoil the fun who are yet to watch the movie.

It is Dhoom with a difference and has repeat value.

As for Satyam–it wasn’t ‘just a number thrown in’–

  16. Apex — I had a chance to watch Blue is the Warmest Colour — but gave it a miss, opting instead for a Serbian film from 2009 (Honeymoons directed by Istvan Szabo, at filmfest recently).

A couple of days earlier, I had seen Don Jon ( independent US film about a porn addict who can’t have meaningful relationships in real life) — and got put off by the excessive porn and sexual excesses in it. So ‘Blue is…’ it did not attract me, ’cause I was not in the mood to watch two girls fooling around, and apparently quite graphically filmed. Well, we ( self and spouse) did manage to get a dvd of the film, and its there waiting to be watched. Should watch it soon– is it worth it, despite all the groping?Frankly I’ve had enough of overt sexuality displayed by Argentine/ West European/ American festival films. Why can’t they simply suggest and move on –like Iranian, Japanese films do; love Hungarian and Turkish cinema too. These people are not too bothered with one big thing, but find humour and irony in other aspects of life too. I just loved the dark comedy Parviz (Iran), about a fat pot bellied loser, the worm who gets pushed, but turns. Wish our Indian actors would have the guts to do such a film.

How was ‘honeymoons’ & have u seen ‘the lunchbox’?
Finally-a viewer who is mixing the right stuff with d3 on one hand and the festival circuit on the other (like me) ..

Ps: As for ‘don jon’–it is on my ‘to watch’ list …

  18. Idea cashes in on Dhoom craze, brings back Abhishek Bachchan
The actor, who featured in hugely successful ‘What an Idea Sirji’ campaigns, was dropped from all communication from the company
Urvi Malvania | Mumbai December 25, 2013 Last Updated at 17:31 IST

Cashing in on the hype and publicity around Dhoom 3, telecom service provider Idea Cellular has brought back campaigns featuring its brand ambassador Abhishek Bachchan.

The junior Bachchan was featured in the hugely successful ‘What an Idea Sirji’ campaigns by Idea till about two years ago before being dropped from all communication from the company.

In the week preceding the release of Yash Raj Films’ Dhoom 3, Idea Cellular put up hoardings featuring the actor once again promoting new services and rates.

Bachchan had till then been conspicuously missing from the communication from the telecom service provider leading speculation that the contract between him and Idea had gone awry.

Sources in the know reveal that this is not the case. “Abhishek and Idea have had a longstanding relationship. Yes, he was missing in Idea’s campaigns for a while, but many a times the creative does not require the celebrity to be present in the campaign,” says an experienced hand in the field of celebrity brand endorsements.

Apart from brand new billboards across major towns and cities, Idea has also starting airing its previous television ads featuring the Bollywood actor. “It is perfect timing in terms of visibility. Dhoom 3 is the last big movie of the year and a very important part of Abhishek’s acting career,” says the professional.

Idea Cellular’s creative duties lie with InterPublic Group’s creative agency Lowe Lintas led by ad man and director R Balki. The agency has been the creative force behind popular Idea campaigns like ‘What an Idea Sirji’, ‘Walk and Talk’, ‘Honey Bunny’ and the most recent ‘121’ campaign.

While the What an Idea Sirji and Walk and Talk campaign featured Bachchan , the other two did not. The What an Idea Sirji campaign revolved around innovative ideas to combat a range of problems faced by the society while the Walk and Talk campaign took the health care peg to reach out to audiences. Another campaign launched by the telcom service provider was the ‘No Idea. Get Idea’ campaign which prompted people to get an Idea connection if they are not able to figure out why they were facing problems of connectivity, faulty billing etc. with their current providers.

Apart from Idea Cellular, Bachchan currently endorses high end watch brand Omega, Videcon d2h and Prestige TTK (with Aishwariya Rai Bachchan). According to sources close to the actor, announcements regarding new tie-ups are expected from the Bachchan in the first quarter of the new year.

One its time of release, two the Yash Raj banner and last but not the least the sheer power of Aamir Khan. Yes, the story has a lot of loopholes, there it has a lot of melodrama but then it also has Aamir Khan in a double role plus a story brand association”

    http://businessofcinema.com/boxoffice/box-office-dhoom-3-enters-100-crore-club-3-days/125876

Seems everyone is trying to figure out the reason for the super success of the movie, & then everyone mentions the fact that the script has loop holes, movie is not good etc etc.

The audiences are making the critics totally irrelevant, considering the fact that almost every critic panned the movie.

But at the same time i must add that even i did not like the movie, maybe i went with very high expectations.

      • but that’s true for every hit. There’s no film that the audience doesn’t like but nonetheless goes to because of a star. The star draws the initial, the film ultimately has to work. One of the reasons why I find many who say 3I was a great film and so on and therefore did so well absurd. Because while every film is not like 3I every film that works has to be minimally liked. People showed up for Wanted because they liked it, they didn’t show up for Veer a bit later because they didn’t! Even when someone like Salman does essentially one kind of film over and over again and gets huge initials on all of them some still trend better than others. Because they’re liked more.

Similarly on the other side (and this is a point I made just the other day) one also can’t say that the franchise was already huge and so on. That’s of course absolutely true. But the question is: since they could have taken a number of stars why did they opt for Aamir? In other words they wanted to make it even bigger after D2 and the star they found most optimal for this at this point in time was Aamir. that means something. So at either end of the equation Aamir’s contribution cannot be understated or underestimated in any sense. In fact a different sort of case could be made here — inasmuch as this is the most narrative-oriented Dhoom, far more dependent on a more serious script, and specially with a 3 hr length it needed to be that much more convincing. This wasn’t like the earlier films where even if you didn’t like them much you could still find them entertaining in that basis babes-studs-bikes sense! Here that script portion really has to work. In fact the strongest bits here aren’t the chases and the standard Dhoom fare. It’s this other stuff.

        • Yes, totally agree.

By my point is that most of the media pieces that are coming out now are inherently hypocritical in their approach.

They are pointing to the flaws of the movie and then stating the reasons for success ( ie. aamir, yashraj etc etc ). That is not the correct way of analysis, yes i agree that the movie did not work for a lot of us. But that does not mean that the movie is not good.

The fact that the movie is doing super business is ample proof of the fact that the movie is being liked. That the segments of the population that are loving the movie may not have the same sensibilities like me is fine with me.

It is the story that gripped the audience’s attention this time and the other things are like icing on the cake. The story maybe weak but public are loving the emotions. The theatre where I saw the film had pindrop silence and nobody left their seats in the middle.

    • As Abzee put it in his review, this is not a Dhoom film but a masala fare trying to contain itself into a Dhoom franchise which is its biggest flaw and I can’t blame people for not liking such a heavy Dhoom film. This franchise is supposed to light hearted with no family emotional baggage and teary eyed scenes. It completely does a U-turn for its franchise and the revenge part is not as strong as people are putting it hear. If a Bank rejects a loan as not there are enough tickets selling and Father kills himself and then kids grow up and plans to destroy the bank (not the person who rejects the loan, you can see at the start that the other 2 colleagues are appreciating the circus act and were in favor of passing the loan).

For me, I’m not worried about ‘heavy/emotional’ Dhoom but rather weak masala fare. You can’t destroy a whole bank(which has millions of people working) for a simple reason that once Bank rejects a loan and Father kills himself and that makes the Bank Villain. Also the twin brother act and scenes were gimmicky and too much over explanation again and again. Anyways, I can’t blame people like this weak film but I can also understand why people will not and can not like this film.

      Like

      • In US, there are not millions of people working in a bank as in India. The staff is comparatively less.

Yes, destroying a bank just because it followed some rules is a bad thing. Loan recovery is not a crime. But the twin brother concept is quite interesting and I liked Samar more than Sahir. Samar’s struggle to enjoy life in his own way was rather cute.
The one implausible thing is that 2 cops were invited by Chicago police or bank to help them. If they were private detectives, it would have been much more acceptable.

I hundred percent believe that it did so well because it is truly great film that makes the connection with such a huge number pf people. But I also believe that Aamir played a big role in making the film as great as it turned out to be. Dhoom 3 is not a film in that league. Sanjana: ” Loan recovery is not a crime. ” It is, in the moral universe that the film is set in. And it is not loan recovery per se. But the failure to recognize an artiste’s genius and a good artistic idea, based on short-term financial calculation. In the moral universe of the film, in the moral universe of Shahir and Samar that is a crime. Heartlessness is a crime. You might say that isa bank’s job, to be hard-headed. Precisely. Precisely why, the BANK is the villain, and not an individual. The film is far too sophisticated than lowIQ, superficial critics give credit for.

I do not think the story or the film weak at all. As I have mentioned in my first write up, it is an epic and many-layered story with strong emotional and mythic resonances. As I said, the weak portions are the ones which have been taken from the earlier films.

And for the record, I slept through Dhoom 2, except for Krazy KIya Re and the Hriitik dance number. I cannot remember what the film was about. In fact when I was planing to go for the film with mu daughter back from US for Christmas holiday break, I was telling her couldn’t we have had a geuinely nice film for Christmas. Then we saw the saw the film separately. She in the morning show, and I with my wife in the night show. I was riveted all through the film ( except for the chase sequences) and my daughter loved the film as well as Aamir. Now we want to see it again this Sunday, together. The film has soul and Samar just does not let go of you.

$8M is US shd be easy from here, If it achieves $8M , it’ll become the first Bollywood movie to get 50cr in a single market outside India.

At this rate even $10M is possible in US.

    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hindi/movies/news-interviews/Bhaag-Milkha-Bhaag-a-completely-fake-film-Naseeruddin-Shah/articleshow/27733378.cms?

Seasoned Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah says he didn’t like ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and feels it was a completely fake film.

“It’s a completely fake film. Farhan has no doubt worked very hard but building up muscles and growing your hair is not exactly working hard on your acting.

“At least he should have tried to look like Milkha. Milkha is mighty pleased by him and he imagines that this was his life, he imagined he looked like that. Doesn’t he have photographs of himself from 1960s Olympics,” Naseer told media.

“Bhaag Milkha… was a biopic on the life of former athlete Milkha Singh, portrayed by actor Farhan Akhtar. Released July 5 this year, the film did a whopping business of over Rs.100 crore and also found acceptance from the audience of all age groups and strata.

Naseer however feels that “Farhan was made to look like Rocky and not Milkha”.

“All the girls screamed for him when he appeared and so on which is lovely. He looked terrific but he did not look like Milkha. It’s was just too fake a film. Yes it was very beautifully shot which makes it technically an excellent film,” said the actor.

    • Lol Naseer can be extremely blunt, but I couldn’t agree more with him on his assessment of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. It was fake, repetitive and boring. Find Rakeysh Omprakash really overrated, a few good visuals/moments is all he has done so far.

      • Haven’t seen BMB, and will do so, but I’m unsurprised by this criticism. From the first images of a gym-honed Farhan, the film appeared to be wearing its sweat, just trying way too hard to be Oscar ready. Still I’d give Mehra more credit. There’s a brilliant visual artist there, he just needs superlative scripts to match his gifts.

And what about all the impossibly shapely and perfectly groomed item girls who spring up in the tiniest villages and sleaziest little bars? This isn’t exclusive to men or women.

      DHOOM 3
In 2004, two initiatives were launched to pass off mediocre blue-blood Babalog as superstars, while making a shitload of cash for their stakeholders.

One was the UPA government. The other was the Dhoom franchise.

In both these, the trick was essentially same. Smoke. Mirrors. Hype. And for smarter people to hold up the halo for the mediocres.

By 2004, the powers-that-be had tried, with no success, to pass Uday Chopra, the scion of one of Bollywood’s richest and most powerful families, off as a romantic hero. But after the spectacular tanking of his solo “Mere Yaar ki Shaadi Hai”, the writing was on the wall.

It was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it was to make Uday Chopra’s fantasy of being an A-list hero comes to fruition.

      But they didn’t give up.

Dhoom was born, in an attempt to package Uday Chopra as an action-comic hero, but this time with solid support. Or what was known as the donut principle, surround the hole in the middle with sugary goodness. They got Abhishek Bachchan, another blue-blood of similar talent but with slightly better career prospects than Uday Chopra, to be his cohort and rising stud-muffin John Abraham to be the villain. To which was added Pritam’s inspirational music, Rimii (that’s how I think she spelt it then) Sen’s double alphabets, some bike chases, some scenes that looked suspiciously similar to Ocean’s Eleven, another hero whose name I have forgotten (oh wait…it was Eesha Deol) and a lot of Chopraian marketing and media muscle.

It worked. Kind of. Dhoom was a hit. But Uday Chopra, despite having cinema in his shirts and pants (Rahul Gandhi speak for “in his genes”), was not going to be able to go to solo outside the family’s productions.

Two years later when Dhoom 2 was made, the challenge was even greater. Now there were two underperfoming Babalog that had to be passed off as stars, with Abhishek Bachchan adding folds below his chin more rapidly than hits to his belt. With great responsibility, comes greater casting. The powers-that-be brought in even more serious talent to hide the limitations of the lead pair, making the so-called villains the marquee names. They got Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai to headline, though the heroes were still, on paper, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra. Dhoom 2 piled it on thick and fast, Roshan playing a Hispanicy basketball-player who rollerblades and dresses up as the Queen, Aishwarya Rai playing a faux “Are you like checking me out” accent, lifts from “Mission Impossible” and periodic appearances of Bipasa Basu’s sandbags. And then there was Aishwarya Rai’s first on-screen kiss (She had refused to kiss Chandrachud Singh in Josh, but then who would want to kiss Chandrachud Singh or “Bhabiji” as we used to refer to him) with Roshan, which while being as cold as Aishwarya Rai, was hyped to be controversial and bold. Ho-hum.

And now 2013. Tata Young, of the original Dhoom Dhoom song, has become Tata Old. Abhishek Bachchan is as relevant today as a dial-up modem. Uday Chopra is still Uday Chopra. With the latter having ostensibly announced his retirement, (i.e. given up hope), the powers-that-be decided to give him a farewell mega-hit. Since they could not fly down Sammy and his team to Wankede, they did the next best thing.

      Another Dhoom.

Chicago. 1990. People wear either Prohibition-era clothes or look like they stepped off from the sets of Duck Dynasty. A talented magician, played by Jackie Shroff, runs the Great Indian Circus which plays in an ,enormous Beaux-Arts style opera house. It is a sad, little one-man act, consisting of an Alok Nath-eyed Shroff pulling rabbits and other assorted things from the Mausichigaand. The sinister “Western Bank of Chicago”, headed by the cliched “evil white man” is not impressed because he wants to see women in short skirts pulling stuff out of the mouth of a hippo. Despite the heart-wrenching pleas of the son-of-Jackie-Shroff and Jackie Shroff’s Richard Burton accent, the evil white man decides to shut it down. Faced with heartbreak or in the grip of anger brought on by repeated retakes, Jackie Shroff suddenly says, like a pakka denizen of the Windy City, “Bankwalon tumhare aisi ki taisi” and shoots himself with Al Capone’s spare gun.

Shattered by this experience, the son-of-Jackie-Shroff grows up to be Sahir (Aamir Khan) who decides to take revenge on the banks by robbing them, because since banks don’t have insurance against robbery, robbing the same bank a number of times destroys them. Eager to avoid capture, he leaves behind his calling card and a message written in Hindi. Chicago’s finest are immediately onto it and conversations like the one below leave the audience no doubt as to how smart they are.

Banker: ”Whos the guy who has robbed us?”

      Chicago’s finest: “It’s a thief sir”

Unable to make head or tail of the Devnagri script, and since Chicago does not fall under Preet Bharara’s jurisdiction, which if it was he could have done a cavity search and found not a brain in the cranium of anyone associated with the story and the script, a call is sent for ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and his sidekick Ali (Uday Chopra), who, immediately realize that since the messages have been written in Hindi, the thief is an Indian. Meanwhile Aamir Khan hires Katrina Kaif as his assistant, after an audition that entails her doing a strip tease. Having a woman in a short skirt who can be out-acted by a hippo and the cash from his heists (how he pulls them off is never shown precisely, perhaps because the people at the helm, I am assuming, was too lazy to have been “inspired” by sequences from a few good heist movies), Aamir Khan builds up his Baba’s dream. But he has not contended with Abhishek Bachchan’s angry-old-man-who-is-unhappy-with-his-Isabgol face ….

What the fuck am I doing? I am trying to synopsize the story of Dhoom 3. There is NO story. Or, more precisely, the story is like the Congress party’s constitution, there but really not important. Suffice to say, before the end credits roll, you will get to see Uday Chopra play Jack Sparrow, Abhishek Bacchan play a homeless person, Aamir Khan ride Batman’s Bajaj, plot holes the size of Sharad Pawar, intellectual punch-counterpunch that would make a two-year-old laugh, and, by today’s standards, some really crappy special effects (the running down a skyscraper or hanging from a edge of a ledge look so “taken against a blue screen” that it’s laughable).

But mention must be made of Aamir Khan, the “method man” and “actor’s actor”. In a strange coincidence, he always finds himself in original works that have remarkable similarities to Nolan’s movies (in Bengal, we call him Nolan-guru and he is available only in the winter). Memento. Now another one. Had it been someone else, I would have said “copied” but Aamir Khan, being so international and sincere and method and Satyamev Jayate, would never be a part of something so Bollywood. His acting in Dhoom 3 is brilliantly diverse—consisting of a few stock expressions randomly sequenced—mildly angry face, intense Ghajini face, watching-strip-tease face, Bum-bum bole face and Ailaa Juhi Chawla face. For someone who claims to “think everything through” it’s strange how if you looked at his expression, you would never think he was running down a skyscraper or holding a man hanging over a ledge, so free of context it is. One doesn’t expect much from AB Junior or Uday Chopra or Katrina Kaif or a park bench when it comes to acting, but when Aamir Khan dials in a mediocre performance and runs with the cheque, the cynical undertone of the whole project stares at you in the face so hard that it becomes impossible to ignore.

Of course, Dhoom 3 is a grand success. Every big-name movie nowadays seems to be. It has made God-knows-how-many-crores in the time that it took you to read this post. The director, whose greatest achievement so far was in getting Anil Kapoor to shave his chest for Tashan (an effort that I believe would have required sheep-shearing machines from New Zealand), will now be the toast of Bollywood. Abhishek Bacchan, whose performance is being praised (albeit for now by his father), has a super-hit as a hero. (Yes he would like you to believe he is the hero)

Hell, even Uday Chopra may be back for an Afridi-like encore.

      Man, this is rib-ticking stuff–
      Lol @ ‘Nolan-guru’ 🙂

  30. Dhoom 3 To Be Highest All Time Grosser In Ten Days

    Thursday 25th December 2013 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dhoom 3 will become the highest grossing Hindi film ever in just ten days. The highest grossing Hindi film till date is Chennai Express at 208 crore nett and the way Dhoom 3 is going this figure will be breached at the end of business on Sunday.

The film has already grossed around 160 crore nett in six days and next four days should see business of at least 50 crore nett even in worst case scenario.

Chennai Express took 21 days to become the highest grosser ever while the earlier highest all time grossers 3 Idiots and Ghajini managed the feat in a similar time to Dhoom 3. Both films took around 10-11 days. The distributor share of the film will be second or third highest ever in just seven days.

All things being equal, this is a telling statement. Irrespective of what record was set or breached, the fact that Aamir has on an average needed 2 weeks less to achieve it is an indicator of how big his films open, and how they stay big for the opening run and more.

  35. Amitabh Bachchan’s auto inspiration from son Abhishek Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan seems to have been inspired by son Abhishek Bachchan. Just like Abhishek, who was seen performing an auto rickshaw stunt in his latest flick DHOOM 3, Amitabh too shot for a photo-shoot using the auto rickshaw as a prop.

  37. Caught D3 a second time since I was a bit convinced after going through Utkal’s and Abzee’s reviews that I might have missed the forest for the trees..but no so after all. While my opinion remains unchanged; the degree of harshness can be brought down a bit, is all. While I am shocked that I contributed 11$ more to Uday’s condominium rent in LA, I am also sad; since if it were AK producing this film, I could at least rest assured that AK would invest at least some of this money in a project like SHIP OF THESEUS or PEEPLI!!

This effort at dove-tailing the ’70s revenge sagas into D3’s plastic universe is really the crux of failure here. This is a very uncomfortable marriage. As individuals, the 2 parts of the film might have worked better. But the marriage is one that is pretty unconvincing. I did feel the 2nd half obviously better than the 1st.

Satyam’s review might open up a few more positive aspects but my complaints remain the fundamental things: some hilarious, uninspired writing – intentional or unintentional; lethargic pace; and some stock insert-execute mode scenes. As I mentioned before, such short-comings would not even be a concern for me if it were any other actor at the fulcrum of this film, but with Aamir, it is difficult to forgive. No excuse of a ‘masala’ universe can redeem this film for me. The action sequences appeared lamer the 2nd time for me. But anyway that was not sold as the ‘turning-heads’ event of the film. So I am not concerned with it that much. The very few take-aways include some fine acting chops between Abhishek and Aamir at 6 flags, some fine aerial and frontal photography of Chi-town’s skyline; Abhishek’s ‘desi’ entry; & some good confrontational moments between the alter-egos post-intermission.

This might/will turn out to be a money-spinner; but this will also be the 1st movie of Aamir post-Lagaan I think which has polarized box-office results and the quality of the film. FANAA I abhorred too but the 1st half in which he played a flirt was pretty much enjoyable and he was having a good time there. And his career has hardly been spectacular — acting-wise — pre-Rangeela.

Hope this money-spinner doesn’t deflate into Aamir going soft on his script-sifting sense and D3 remains just an anomaly in his repertoire..

        • Having said that, I must gloat that this movie is making money inspite of the fact that a ‘dwarf’, a ‘midget’, riding a tri-cycle is at the center of this film! Have to be glad that he flipped the bird royally to those great ones who were lynching him for having gotten onto a territory strictly reserved for the blessed ones in terms of genes..and enhanced with n-packs. This is really a fine slap.

And I have to disagree that people are kinder to shorter men in India. It is a very insensitive society with respect to people that do not fit the protocol – be they dusky women, short men, or aged people. One just has to read comments on Aamir being in the film and realize the amount of hatred one has if one doesn’t fit the ‘standard.’

I really wish there was more evenness in the masala-plastic marriage here. But that’s how the film-world operates. I wished DIL SE would have been loved by all. Didn’t happen..

        • As I said earlier, there is no other film industry which is dominated by short men who are routinely paired opposite much taller, very statuesque women. It is a bit absurd to be arguing for short men to be respected in Bollywood, when all three of the reigning stars just happen to be short men themselves! The ire that Aamir faces for his lack of height is insignificant compared to the adulation and respect that he garners amongst the media and general public for being a thinking superstar.

          Like

        • Also, Aamir did have a pronounced six-pack in thos film, and he is neither a dwarf nor midget. The average height for Indian men of his generation is not that high, and he’s probably only a couple of inches below average. If one were using western standards (by which he is undoubtedly very short), then every Indian actor except Abhishek and Ranbir would be considered below average in height, not just Aamir!

What amuses me is that Hindi cinema completely bucks the trend for tall leading men, but then bizarely expects all of it’s leading women to be leggy models who tower over the ‘heroes’!

          Like

        • Accordi to online statistics Indian men have an average height of 5’5″-5’6″! This seems too low IMO, but if it’s accurate then Aamir is actually as tall as/taller than than the average Indian man!

There was an inherent glee in blogosphere and here as well when people had a chance to punch Aamir based on his supposed ‘shortcomings.’ So my ‘gloating’, if you will, is merely based on a reaction to the vehemence with which Aamir was ridiculed.

In any case, I consider people who make fun of other people based on sex, orientation, physicality, age, scumbags of the worst kind; of guttural quality. It is no big deal to make fun of things that the human has no control over and something that is either a God given gift or a curse. It is one thing to say somebody’s looks or age or whatever doesn’t work for one but to keep harping on something that is beyond human control is abominable, be it in cinema or in real life.

I have gone after Hrithik based on his supposed acting-quotient and his boasting of his film’s special-effects. And I have gone after Aamir since his script-sense seems to have gone for a toss here. So am not quite sure where did you find ‘partisanship’ in my reactions..

        • No I’m saying two different things. Obviously any film can only become a hit when a majority of the audience likes it to some degree. But this does not at all mean that the film is inherently valuable for that reason. much as no one in their right mind would consider Dus Numbri (though I enjoy it too!) a more worthwhile film than Kaagaz Ke Phool!

I am therefore arguing against this ‘morality’ whereby the will of the majority is considered something sacrosanct in itself. But given the awful decisions majorities make at various levels it’s surely absurd to suggest that a majority means anything more than the obvious! This is a kind of fake populism that ought to have no place in discussions of merit (or lack thereof). Luckily the majority that rejected Mera Naam Joker wasn’t the final word on that film. Much as the majority opinion that made Benaam Baadshah some kind of decent success belongs in the dustbins of film history.

Not referring to D3 here but making a more general point. This is the whole ‘majority’ obsession of democracies. And one which has often had disturbing consequences at the polls in various countries. On D3 I will say that though I won’t really be doing this I could see it a third time as well. Even with respect to Abhishek and though I concede he looks great here and has some good moments I’m quite amazed that some folks have been more ‘moved’ by his performance and outing here than DMD! Even offline I’ve been in the weird position of actually being behind the curve when it comes to many liking him here. All these years I was the nut supporting D6 or Raavan or whatever. Suddenly people are telling me that I’m not appreciating him enough or that I shouldn’t be obsessed with the footage. LOL! But some moments work really well in the film, with Aamir of course, and otherwise. Will get to all of this when I (hopefully!) put down some thoughts on this. Right now I should get going as I’m getting late for the Wolf of Wall St. or the Fox of Prince St. Or the Rhinoceros of Mott St. Pardon me. I’ve been playing these crazy games in my head with the film’s title!

        • I don’t think that people are going bombastic on Abhishek here but what is quite clear is that an actor needs space to prove his mettle! In D2, Abhishek was meted out a very bad deal. The best of actors have failed with poorly written and etched roles. In those few scenes with Aamir at the park, Abhishek never let the attention draw away from himself inspite of having Aamir facing him. Because there is an inbuilt Aamir legacy working in the audience mind and he has not let it affect his performance. One needs time and length of a minimal kind at least to show one’s mettle!! And his ‘rise’ in people’s perception is from D2 to D3. Not from Raavan to D3. And this might prove that of all those who orgasmed over Hrithik in D2 (which is perfectly relevant), fans or non-fans, did sub-consciously know that Abhishek had been cut a raw deal..

          Like

        • agree mostly. though I think that even in D2 if he’d looked like this he would have been quite ok. It’s true that he just has more substantial moments whether it’s the dramatic stuff with one brother or the lighter stuff with the other one but still I think it’s more the physicality than anything else. Still not enough space for him here. While D2 had nothing to equal this Abhishek had more footage in certain ways and hence the right look would really have worked in his favor. He did say recently that his mistake there was shooting for this and Guru at the same time and hence he wasn’t as fit for D2. On the other hand some of the stuff with the twin seems a bit out of character for the cop. Do think the guy in the rickshaw sequence (which I loved other than the obsessive slo-mo) deserves a film all to himself. Raavan and D6 might not be the best examples but I don’t see how one could appreciate Abhishek in D3 but not in DMD.

  40. Chicago stars in a new Bollywood film boasting a musical number by the Bean and featuring action sequences that sacrifice a score of cop cars.
Cue the superlatives for “Dhoom 3,” India’s biggest-budget film from India’s biggest studio, Yash Raj Films. It’s the first Indian film to hit IMAX screens in that country, and it opens on Friday on 236 North American screens. That’s a record wide-release in this territory.
Hindi dialogue is subtitled in English for local screenings.
The two-hour, 52-minute film belongs to India’s biggest franchise, wherein a detective and his comic sidekick chase wily crooks. The first “Dhoom” (2004) was mostly set in Mumbai. “Dhoom 2” (2006) hopped to Rio. Writer-director Vijay Krishna Acharya shot the third installment in Chicago from July 16 to Oct. 29, 2012.
“The Dark Knight” inspired the use of Lower Wacker Drive for high-speed mayhem. Acharya sought the look of “West Side Story” when he staged a singing and dancing scene near Clark and Diversey in an alley with back porches.
Carrie Holt de Lama worked as a production supervisor on the film and observed the Bollywood crew of 120 would “obsess” over details, from fake snow to old bank locks. They used Google maps to track the blocks. “They knew the city better than some of our own locations people,” says the 45-year-old Chicagoan.
She adds, “They were fiercely defending their aesthetic all the time and making sure the shot was absolutely beautiful.” Her favorite setup was at Ping Tom Park in Chinatown, with two helicopters, 22 boats and 165 stunt people. She estimates the production spent $18 million here and hired about 400 Chicagoans.
Bollywood fans from the city and across the country came to see Aamir Khan, the star of “Dhoom 3.” Production assistant Nic Park, 23, says: “I have this surreal image burned in my mind: this lady carrying a baby running full throttle at Khan.” Holt de Lama explains: “A lot of people just wanted Khan to touch their babies.”
During a visit to Mumbai, Holt de Lama saw Khan buy out an entire restaurant and a movie theater to have an evening uninterrupted by fans. “He loved Chicago because he could go shopping without people bothering him,” she reports. “The Armani on Michigan Avenue was his favorite.”
Khan wants to come back. Holt de Lama passed him a screenplay by a Los Angeles writer about a vampire in Chicago. Rabid fans may clamor for his bite.

Regardless of how the movies have turned out, one thing that I don’t think anyone can deny is that the production quality and cinematography of Hindi movies has improved dramatically. The first movie I noticed this in was Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. And especially in action scenes. 3 movies that I think have been great in action have been Don 2, then ETT, and now D3. (Incidentally the 3 Khans). D3 didn’t have great action scenes but the money and detail towards each action scene shows. D2 and ETT were nice changes from the usual slow motion stuff.

Whatever one may say, club him with the other two Khans who definitely don’t look short though may be short (it’s the looking that matters). I can never forget that scene in the hospital where AK is lying on a bed/table looking so miniscule in Gajhani.

In the present scenario an Amitabh Bachhan would never have been as popular as he was the. They wouldn’t have tolerated a tall, impressive personality, who stood out among people.

Hrithik himself is significantly shorter (something that becomes even more obvious in some of the scenes they share in MPDKH). So then we’re into this Platonic realm where people are either ‘taller’ or ‘shorter’. But what’s the standard? If Abhishek or his father is made one the difference between Salman and Aamir might seem negligible!

There are other ways to not like Aamir. Not sure why his height needs to be brought into it. I’m not saying that physicality does not matter in certain kinds of parts. Obviously Hrithik is more convincing on the Dhoom terrain than Aamir (not that this has mattered to the gross!). Akshay similarly and so on. But for some of us who grew up with the likes of Bachchan or Dharam or Vinod Khanna or whoever the idea that Salman today is beating up people is already pretty absurd! I have my issues with SRK. Height is not one of them!

        Like

    • Why on earth should Aamir’s height bother people so much? Forget male Indian audience, even females in India are all right with a short guy as long as he has other things going for him. Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Aamir Khan, Kamalahasan — all these guys have other things going for them at 5 and half feet or so — Aamir is said to be 167.5 cm tall as per an old article I have–which makes him just under 5’6″ . I recently watched Kamal and aamir share the stage and both looked same height. Kamal’s fans certainly don’t talk about his height. It’s only Bolly followers who mock shorties. In any case Aamir has a face that’s worth looking at, a charming warm smile, ditto eyes. Good enough for me and many others.

In any case, it will be at least 50crs over CE. And now that BOI has given this holiday factor tippni (read below), it is fairly obvious that AK has once again beaten competition fair and square.

Off course, for them the 25% premium of D3 over CE is due to the Dhoom series factor. That’s like saying that if there was a no-name actor casted as the villian, the movie would still make 50crs in its first week.

There was a time that it made little difference whether a film came on a holiday or non holiday. Ten years ago, a big film that was going to work would put up 95-100% occupancies on opening day irrespective of holiday or non holiday and hold similar collections through the weekend. A film that was not going to work did get benefit of holiday with collections coming down the next day.

This all changed as the releases got wider and the importance of holidays grew year by year but after a long time a film has gone above that holiday factor. Dhoom 3 proved that if a film has a craze amongst the audience then even still a holiday or non holiday release makes little difference. This is probably a rare occurrence as not many films will have the craze of Dhoom 3.

Despite Dhoom 3 going above 30 crore without a holiday does not mean this is the norm and other biggies will repeat this, a 30 crore number is still more realistic for a holiday while a 20 crore type figure for a non holiday but what is encouraging is that it shows if the product is right then there is no need for a holiday. The holiday benefit to Dhoom 3 will be at best around 12 crore nett with the first week getting a boost by around 7 crore nett and around 5 crore nett will come in second week due to the New Year period. This 12 crore benefit is a paltry sum considering the huge business it will do in the final count.

  46. My mini review of Dhoom 3 on facebook. Will write more after some family members watch the film this weekend.

I watched Dhoom 3 today — and liked it a lot. Not a great movie but not a terrrible film either. And hats off to Aamir Khan for holding the film together right till the last frame. He could easily have gone overboard with his role requirements, especially in the second half — when certain character requirements needed to be asserted — I cannot tell more without revealing spoilers. Just my opinion that what could be overplayed was played just right.

Abhishek-Aamir confrontations were really good, with Abhishek doing a competent job, intense as required. Uday Chopra did his bit, lightening the heavy mood as necessary.

Katrina was a dream. Beautiful, fit, lithe, perfect in her gymnastic dancing, soft and sweet in her fairly short but significant role.

The three songs — Kamli, Malang and the romantic number — fit in well enough for me, but not for my husband as well as my friend S.– who both felt that the songs slowed down the film, took away the tension. But come on this is a Bollywood stew and to me the various ingredients blended well enough. Kamli was need to showcase Aalia’s skills to the circus boss Sahir (Aamir) — and what a dance Katrina does — a slow striptease cum gymnastic dance routine. Then the big Malang number– the sufi type music was fine by me though my spouse felt that it did not jell with the rest of the film. But the song sequence seamlessly fit into the story, showcasing the big circus act, the gymnastic dance dazzler. To me that one song is worth the price of the admission ticket.

Tu hi Junoon, the romantic song –it seemed slightly extraneous, but eventually fit in too, adding value, carrying the stoiry along.

What did feel extraneous ( to me)were the interminable chase sequences, especially the crashing-overturning cars.

The second half of the film –it was a completely dramatic tale, far removed from the flash and mindlessness of the usual Dhoom stuff.

Chicago was beautifully photographed and almost seemed a charcater.

Plenty of loopholes and lapses in logic — which can be forgiven in the larger context of the film.

My friend S felt the final violent act on the bank–it could send out a wrong message. I don’t think so. anybody feel like S?

The recurring poetry –Bande hai hum–gave soul to the film.

Loved Jackie Shroff and the young boy who played Aamir.

So much more to say; need to collect my thoughts and write after others have seen the film.

The film does not deserve the trashing it has got from certain critics. Yes, it could have been a greater film, but what it is — fine by me.

I am not one to give star ratings, but here is a rating that seems ok just now. 3.5/5

The film is definitely worth a watch, perhaps two.

Action scenes were really tacky….the worst was when Aamir rides aways his bike on a rope in slo-mo while the cops are doing nothing to stop him. That kind of stuff just makes the film silly.

The worst part was the transformer bike….it’s understandable in Batman because 1) it’s done with a lot of style and good CGI 2) It’s part of Batman’s mythic world, but it just looked out of place in Dhoom 3, and was just lazy screenwriting.

On the other hand there have been repeats here even by those who didn’t love it. So some of the negativity has evened out. And of course there’s the fact that this isn’t a film anyone was going to miss unless WOM was atrocious. I didn’t mind CE. Admittedly it loses steam after the first half hour or so but still found it watchable. The DDLJ spoof in the train early on is I think one of the truly inspired things Shetty has done (and there are not many!) along with the maa moment in BB.

Its around 179 crs in Hindi version if one goes with Tarans number. So it still needs to do some work to reach 300 crs. At this moment 250 seems a lock. The second Friday seems to be around 9 crores from Varanasi and Kanpur numbers. It means it will do around 60 crores in second week. Lets see where this lands up. I wont be surprised to see this taper off very soon once the weekend passes. The movie is performing way better than the WOM and hence i suspect it will go down from Monday. But then I have been wrong on this movie since Day 1. I did expect 300 crores surely before I saw it but once I saw it I didnt think it will do this well

But aamir must always do something like Dhobighat or peepli live so that his boxoffice power goes down the drain. They dont want him to rule the boxoffice. If he dares, then there are snide remarks.

      • Movie is below average. It is better than CE which is not saying much. It is definitely way less entertaining then K3. K3 had just one scene overlapping somewhat with man of steel. However such climatic scenes are quite similar in several superhero movies so even that could be coincidental.
Here several scenes were directly lifted from movies: Spoiler Alert

        1) Magic box Prestige
        2) Money falling several times Now You See me
        3) Circus clown , Motor Bike Scene Dark Knight
        4) Brother fist meeting Akalya

Amir did not personify the Dhoom charisma as John and Hr did.
        KK was nonexistent .
AB was slightly better though predictable.

Dhoom2 was an order of magnitude better movie. The robberies were so much fun to watch even though with 7 year older technology.
        Comparison;
        1) Hr > AK: dancing, sauve thief, charisma
        2) AR>>>>> KK: no comparison
        3) Climax way better in Brazil.

        Overall D2 : 8/10, D3 4.5/10 CE 3/10 K3 6.5/10 3I 9.5/10

    • @ Sanjana –As always, well said. but seriously, I hope Aamir returns to sane meaningful cinema. Dhoom 3 has made big bucks, good; the film has been hated by many, loved by a section — and obviously watched enough to make it a super hit. Now i hope Aamir delivers some good cinema with PK; Raju Hirani is helming it and so i am expecting something quirky, funny, intelligent and empathetic.

First season of Satyamev Jayate — it’s something that Aamir can always be proud of. No Mela or even a heavily criticized and misunderstood film like Dhoom 3 can take away the sheen that SMJ gave aamir. Am waiting for the second season, in 2nd half of 2014. PK is expected on 6th june. Fingers crossed for both.

      • LS-thanx, Good to hear your balanced thoughts on D3. I’m happy for aamir to finally get over the mammoth success of 3I & deliver this one. I hope d3 achieves my potential target of 350.
Amongst all the euphoria and orgasmic Satyams, there are some sobering thoughts–
The reactions of the ‘thinking aamir fan’ like most aamir fans here are not easy to ignore.
Bcos aamir depends on good wom and ‘credibility’ more than others like srk, Salman–it’s a fact!
When one hears such extreme negative reactions from aamr fans (forget haters or even neutrals like abcd) above –one needs to ponder.
So one shoikd enjoy the suxess but not without some disclaimers-
The box office is on a roll INSPITE of aamir drawing negative reactions (worst since mela!!) from fans/haters alike.
Perhaps it shows how aamir was NOT crucial to the box office outcome here!!
Yes he did add to the opening like any a-lister khan /HR but swam along the tide later…

        After Lagan-Amir left his wife!
After 3 idiots -/aamir left films for 5-6 years effectively
Hope after d3-aamir can handle te magnitude of bo success
And realises his place ad strengths /weaknesses
And as LS said this is a ‘detour’ only..
        Otherwise
As all aamir fans are complaining here–
Aamir may have won the fight but lost the bigger battle 🙂

The blog isn’t about me, it’s about everyone else who’s here and the chemistry is spoilt when you keep putting up what are frankly ridiculous comments again and again. Once in a while everyone does this but not repeatedly and obsessively as you often do. You used to be different once (even if you always had these tendencies!). But something has totally made you flip with the K3 and D3 release. And your comments are not unprovoked either. Because you very regularly engage others with lewd innuendo, inventing new names for them and so on. As far as I can see no one ever responds. It’s just not fair to keep doing things and keep taking all other discussions off course. The comment I responded to the other day is a different sort of example. Every single day you’re putting up a long comment about D3 and Aamir and 350 and his performance and the rest of it. C’mon! It’s the repetition and the plain silliness of it. And this is one example. You had some useful things to contribute. You can do so again. I am certainly in agreement with others here who have a problem with your comments. Hope you;ll get back to your older self. Because this current self candidly isn’t working out. Won’t say more at this point.

BS. Aamir is the reason this shallow film achieves any sort of depth. To me this is not Aamir’s worst film, certainly not in the league of Mela. If it weren’t for Aamir’s beginning to end’ role, this film wouldn’t be anything more than yet another bikes and gals Dhoom flick, making an average amount of moolah enough to recover costs.

And why do people go on and on about things like aamir’s height/ age/’leaving his wife’ — all the usual arrows aimed at a vulnerable star. Height and age are not in his hands and as for his personal life, he seems to have found an equitable relationship with his ex, present and other family members, as per many media reports. Leave his personal life alone; you and I know only so much and the truth is not what it seems, for anybody, public or private personality.

Q What happened at the function?

A Salman Khan came up to me and said, ‘I’m going to break your other arm’, because he was going at Aishwarya Rai [Mohamed, in his role as editor, had stopped Khan from going up to Rai]. Her brother and everyone had walked off and I had to handle it. It was Rishi [Kapoor] who actually pulled him aside. Salman then told me, ‘Maroonga.’ It was horrible
I was brought up in a traditional disciplined way by my grandmother. Her philosophy was, ‘Never take a favour.’ If anyone gives you Rs 100 as an Eidi present, give back 200. I was always careful with my friendships. So I’m indebted to no one, from Mr AB to Z. And Mr Bachchan’s blog about serving me ‘exclusive and expensive’ wine was such a joke. The Bachchans owe me and they know that

A couple journo friends have often passed on ‘news’/gossip about a famous Bolly star’s secret meetings with an old lady friend — but I have never made them public. I don’t even know how much to believe and i don’t care as long as the person is a good human being.

Like Hritik, Aamir too married young, at age 21 to his 19 yr old neighbour. I remember watching Simi Garewal’s Rendezvous show, late nineties and him talking about his wife, children, runaway marriage at the local govt registry, about hoping to celebrate his 25th wedding anniversary with a big Bolly party…we had the video on tape and watched it along with other stuff a couple of times. So, was quite shocked when his supposedly stable marriage broke up. But i have also been seeing pics of Reena (looking graceful) attending 3 idiots premier, chatting with ex, attending his kid Azad’s b’day…i guess they have learned to move on.

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dhoom 3 continues its dream run as it collected around 10 crore nett as per early estimates on day eight. The collections are little lower than the eighth day of 3 Idiots but that is because it was a national holiday for 3 Idiots on day eight. It is the second highest day eight collections of all time.

The weekend should go on to do record business as there will be a jump in weekend business for Dhoom 3 which was not there for 3 Idiots. The second weekend record is 33 crore approx for 3 Idiots and Dhoom 3 has chances to get near the 40 crore nett mark or even go over depending on Saturday and Sunday growth.

Dhoom 3 has grossed 184 crore nett approx in eight days in its hindi version which is close to the lifetime business of the third highest grosser ever Ek Tha Tiger. The top two are Chennai Express and 3 Idiots.

  59. ** Hope Aamir had done at least half of this in D3!**

How different are Aamir Khan and Anil Kapoor as producers?

They are both very different. Aamir is a hands-on producer, whereas Anil is completely non- interfering. Aamir is a guy who is tremendously clued in to the script and is clear about what his film should say and what it shouldn’t say. He is aware of every aspect of filmmaking and is too sharp, so you can’t fool him. There is some amazing value addition he does, for instance, the way he marketed Delhi Belly, which could have otherwise easily gone wrong. He saw the first cut that was just 123 minutes, but he said that it’s not working. I showed him the second cut and he still found it too long. I was married to the script; he wasn’t. He was clear that the film had to move at a very fast pace and he was right. He hears you. He also lets you make your point. Then there will be an argument. By no means is working with Aamir a cakewalk as he tires you mentally, physically, drains you off, but eventually it is an enriching experience. He is actually the most flexible and easy person to be with. Anil, on the other hand, is more an actor than a producer. He is very simple and nice and rooted to his Chembur middle-class upbringing. Once he places the faith in you, he doesn’t ask you a question after that. He is also one of the most hardworking actors I have seen. At this age, look at the stuff he has done, that too, not resisting anything I asked of him as an actor. He was always ready to change and it was his brilliance to convince everybody and get the rights and produce 24.

  60. Dhoom 2 Sets First Week Benchmarks All Over

    Saturday 28th December 2013 09.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

The two new releases Mahabharat and Bhadaas opened poorly all over.

Dhoom 3 smashed all first week records as it collected 174 crore nett. It saw a new first week circuit record in every circuit and new theatre records for a Hindi film in practically every theatre it was released in. In East Punjab it had the highest lifetime share in just one week edging past the figures of Ek Tha Tiger. The film has started strongly in week two and should do record business in week two also.

R… Rajkumar hardly collected in the third week due to limited screens and the film will finish its business around 63 crore nett.

  61. Screen Exclusive: Abhishek Bachchan vrrooms to Victory with ‘Dhoom 3’

s an actor, you have to be like a sponge, you have to observe and absorb everything. Like for this instance I can see that every time you look up after scribbling, you push back your spectacles. Who knows, I might use that for some character that I play,” says Abhishek Bachchan as we kickstart our interview at his office in Juhu.
Coming from an actor, who is often described as fun, affectionate and extremely affable, a true blue team player, it exposes a diligent side to the actor that often goes unnoticed. In fact, he borrowed the mannerisms of Gurukant Desai, his character in ‘Guru’, from producer Vashu Bhagnani — mainly the walk and his exuberance. In ‘Bol Bachchan’, Abbas Ali’s idiosyncrasies were based on Raju, one of the spotboys, says the actor.

Director Umesh Shukla (of ‘Oh My God’ fame) with who he has signed up for All is Well, says of Bachchan Jr, “His light-hearted demeanour conceals a conscientious, involved side to him. Abhishek is always aware of the scene, he has his suggestions in place but he does not interfere. He will do his shot and check with you if it was fine; if not, he’s willing to do it again. As an actor, I also like the raw intensity he exudes —his performance in ‘Yuva’ being an example.”

Senior actress Waheeda Rahman, who shared screen space with him in ‘Delhi 6’, says that he has, among other things definitely displayed a flair for the comic and pulled off movies like ‘Bol Bachchan’ with great élan.

And therein lies the interesting contrast in the actor who has evolved in the last 13 years — to the intense brooder Bachchan started out with, he has added a light-hearted side, always a plus for an actor. “If you are a good actor, you should be able to surprise the audience, ” he says, happy, that he has been able to do so. Over the years, he has also developed the knack of smartly balancing the risky ventures with relatively safe multi-starrers. ‘Dostana’, ‘Bol Bachchan’ are among projects that have paid off with probable sequels in the pipeline too.

‘Dhoom’ is another multi-star venture that has turned out well for his career. “I don’t really differentiate between the two (solo hero films and multistarrers). I would do both.”

The big multi starcast film coming up next is ‘Happy New Year’, in which Bachchan will be sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Deepika Padukone. The experience of working with Shah Rukh Khan, he says, has been a wonderful one. It remains an oft-repeated story that Khan asked his father about the role he had in mind for Abhishek, as though, to quote the actor, he was asking for his hand! “His humility, dedication and enthusiasm towards his work are admirable; a feature that is common to all the greats in cinema,” he says.

Ask him if there is any performance (in a film) that he wished he could improve upon and he replies with can- dour, “Each and every one, because I can improve upon each of them.” Bachchan admits that with experience, his knack for zeroing-in on the good scripts has improved too. “Within the first 15 minutes, you should be able to gauge the sincerity of the director, and his ability to be able to pull it off. There is a teething process you go through, but everybody improves with experience.” Press interviews, he maintains are the most difficult part to handle, “It’s surreal, as though you are analysing yourself. It’s always been very difficult for me.”

As we go to the press, good tidings are in store for Bachchan. After a successful stay of his film ‘Bol Bachchan’, ‘Dhoom 3’, the multiple- starrer heist film, according to business fore- cast, is likely to notch up close to ` 250 cr. Although the film boasts of an ensemble cast with Aamir Khan and Katrina Kaif as fresh additions to the newest installment of ‘Dhoom’ franchise—the first released in 2004 and the second in 2006 with super villains to boot. While the first starred John Abraham as Kabir, a cool biker thief, the second had Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan play robbers Aryan and Sunehri and both editions had done extremely well. The common thread between all three, however, is the Abhishek Bachchan-Uday Chopra duo as the cop Jay Dixit and Ali, a small time crook who becomes his assistant. Over the three editions, the Jay Dixit track has become an intrinsic part of ‘Dhoom’, even as the antagonists in the story keep changing.

“‘Dhoom’ is a great franchise to be a con- stant part of and ‘Dhoom 3’ turned out to be everything we dreamt it to be. We must thank the audience for accepting it with open arms,”

avers the actor. And frankly speaking with the huge success of ‘Dhoom 3’, Bachchan is in a secure space. Besides ‘Happy New Year’ coming up in 2014, there’s director Umesh Shukla’s All is Well, a film with Sanjay Gupta and yet another with Amit Sharma, who directed him in the Idea commercials. Sharma’s film would be under the AB Corp banner.

Describing ‘Dhoom’s’ latest edition, he says, “It has style, youth, attitude and everything that it has had from the start, except that the latest edition is edgier and darker. There was a certain frivolity in the first two, but this one will linger with you a little longer. A large reason why we do ‘Dhoom’ is because Uday and I love working together. The banter that our characters share and the repartee is very watchable.”

About the change of directors he, says Victor (Vijay Krishna Acharya) being the writer of the film was best choice for the job at hand. He enjoyed working with Aamir who, he says, is fun. “The media’s tag of Aamir being a perfectionist is almost like his albatross to bear. It was a pleasure working with him. He is great fun and also very mischievous!”

I can do Jay Dixit in my sleep, Bachchan says, adding that most of the prep for the film was in getting the physicality right. “Prepping for a role is not new, it has always been a part of our movies, it’s just that we talk a lot more about it now,” he explains. And what of the hysteria and hype surrounding washboard abs and suchlike? “It’s sad that there is less emphasis on acting. Sure, you should look the part, but you have to resign yourself to the character completely.”

Bachchan counts among the few, who is not a blind follower of the trend, better known for his performances than physique.

Speaking of good performances, the best compliment he has received so far has been from his father who, after watching ‘Guru’, said, ‘I am proud of you.’

As of now, Bachchan a young father himself, is assiduously dividing time between work and paternal duties. He has his hands full with ‘Happy New Year’, but he does make time to spend with daughter dearest too. “It’s important,” he says,

of striking the work- life balance. As for our next query of featuring in the next edition of ‘Dhoom’, he replies,”Am I going to be part of the next one? Sure, if the script is some- thing I like and feel like doing at that point of time.”

‘Wolf’ Leads the Pack of Newcomers at Christmas Box Office
    By BROOKS BARNES
Box-office analysts are typically able to predict with eerie precision whether a movie will be a hit or a miss just by examining opening-day ticket sales. There is one exception: Christmastime. Because studios release so many pictures in such short order and so many moviegoers are on vacation, initial grosses can be deceptive; films that look soft can find their footing or fall off sharply.

So it is too early to say how “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” will turn out. So far, Martin Scorsese’s “Wolf” (Paramount) has been the No. 1 newcomer, taking in roughly $9.2 million on Christmas Day. But Mr. Scorsese’s film, which tests the extreme outer limits of an R rating, was given a C score from audiences in exit polls, boding ill for word of mouth. Ben Stiller’s “Mitty” (20th Century Fox) was the second-best-performing new release, taking in a better-than-expected $7.8 million on Wednesday, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data.

“47 Ronin” (Universal) was next, with ticket sales of about $7 million – a total that would have been fine had the studio and a financing partner not spent $175 million to make it. “Grudge Match” (Warner Brothers), a boxing comedy starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone that cost about $40 million to produce, took in about $4 million on its first day.

Justin Bieber got coal in his stocking: “Believe” (Open Road), a concert film that cost about $5 million to make, took in just $1.3 million. None of the newcomers could match the holdover power of “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” (Warner), which was the top seller on Wednesday, taking in $9.3 million, for a total of about $150 million since opening on Dec. 13.

      • yeah I’m surprised too.. some thoughts I expressed elsewhere…

[This might be the most compulsively watchable film from Scorsese. DiCaprio easily makes this film amidst a host of fine performances. Ultimately there is nothing very profound here. the film hits all the (satirical) notes it’s supposed to. From Scorsese I expect something more layered though that’s not a fault with this film which is clearly a different kind of beast. Enjoyed it a lot all said and done. Would count this among DiCaprio’s most impressive acts.
will say that even in its over the top vein it’s a deeply unsettling portrayal of not just its immediate subject but the larger American consumerist compact.. but the mostly satirical tone of the film prevents that larger point from being made as potently as it might have been.

Which is again a problem with this mode. Satire has to really take apart its immediate subject to make its point most forcefully but in doing so it is also more necessarily limited to that same subject. Again I should add all of this doesn’t constitute a problem with the film. And I’m certainly wouldn’t want to see one more ‘drama’ on this subject! Will say it blows Gatsby out of the water, a film similar to it in some respects]

      • Shutter Island got an even lower RT rating, exit polled around the same and it wound up Scorsese’s biggest grosser. I personally thought it was the best movie of that year. From what I’ve heard on Wolf it sounds like a winner.

  63. If such substandard movies like D3 and CE can make so much money one wonders what would happen if really good movie like 3I releases now. My guess is based on average ticket price of Rs 200 times footfall of 5 crore. It can make 1000 crore gross.
However with so many below average movies doing so well perhaps the makers have no incentive to make an awsome movie. In fact they may be hesitant to do so thinking that the current single digit movie IQ audience may reject it.
Can someone name a really good movie with an A list star, mass appeal and big budget since 3I
Special26 and Omg we’re low budget non mass appeal.
Dhoom3 had a chance to be such a movie and failed miserably.

    • IMO, a strong BO (ie above 100crs) and quality are almost oxymoronic in the bwood context. A 3I event comes once in a decade. Unfortunately, for even the best actors, bending down to the diktats of the BO becomes a necessity. Otherwise, even after giving a 3I, a superstar like Aamir is denied the luxury of resing on his laurels and attempting a few sensible movies. A Talaash under-performance earns him the sobriquet of becoming a ‘falling star’, And a D3 smash earns him paens from the same sources. So, what can a person like Aamir do? If the perception of a falling star gains momentum, out goes his compensation structure and freedom of choosing or modifying scripts. Whereas a D3 deal ensures that freedom for the immediate future. His fans really ought to tone down this absurd level of criticism for D3, and give him the choice of what he wants. lightly.

      Like

      • It’s true, because of this really unprecedented obsession with the numbers even the most consistent star isn’t given a break. Specially when a film like Talaash getting to 90 is a feat on its own!

        Like

        • As you have pointed out repeatedly, in Hwood, a DeCaprio does not need to bother about BO, and gets all the freedom to do whatever he pleases. His movies more or less get to the 100M mark, and end up being earners for their producers. Once in a while he gives a mammoth ‘Inception’ to keep his BO credentials intact. Bwood gets inspiration from Hwood in every other dept, but totally ignores this model. In fact, a Talaash at 90cr does prove that there indeed is a market for well-made off-mainstream movies, that can be mounted at decent budgets and generate profits. The big stars in fact do need to adopt this model and bring the necessary change to bwood. Otherwise most non-mainstream movies will be relegated to smaller actors and end up within the 40-50cr range, which is not enough to mount more ambitious stuff.

  64. Mumbai: After a short appearance in Australian-American drama ‘Great Gatsby’, megastar Amitabh Bachchan has been again approached for a Hollywood film, which is an adaptation of Vikas Swarup’s ‘Six Suspects’.

Bachchan has been approached by BBC and Starfield productions to star in the movie, based on the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ author’s yet another best selling novel. It will be directed by award winning Argentinean filmmaker Pablo Trapero. However, it is not clear what role Big B would play and if he would be giving his nod for the film or not.

Amitabh Bachchan has been approached by BBC and Starfield productions to star in the movie.

Bachchan essayed a short role as Meyer Wolfsheim in ‘Great Gatsby’ in a small scene with Gatsby and his friend, played by Hollywood star Leonardo Di Caprio.

      • ‘shutter island-Leo’ model in BW

A day doesn’t pass here (nykavi/ others above) ‘urging’ BW to ‘adopt’ the Leo model. But my dear friends– things can’t just be ‘adopted’ in isolation without other value changes -there are critical differences in bw & hw
        A) lack of a credible box office reporting system in bw due to which all sorts of spins, coteries & agendas flourish diminishing transparency (& confidence)
        B) a NONEXPLOITATIVE PAYMENT structure in hw ensures all technicians/bit players get paid properly even in a flop unlike the. ‘Jr artist’ setup in bw (though its improved with corporatisation)
        3) Rampant PIRACY in bw
Forget domestically, even overseas, CDs/DVDs/online ‘rips’ are available within days/weeks of release in bw!!
What confidence will the producer have of recovery after the first weekend ??
Leading to the ‘TOP HEAVY’ model of recovery necessitating FRILLS & SHINY LOLLIES in bw (compromising ‘quality’!!)
        4) forget piracy– HW has the confidence of releasing the same product at different times all over the world also gauging the response profiles/ occupancy and managing overheads –not possible with piracy in bw
        5) bigger market in hw worldwide –dubbed, subtitled . Also to do with bigger reach of English
        6) isolation of ‘high calibre’ makers in bw-lesser rewards
        7) CREDIBLE AWARDS IN HW–
A high quality hw product even if subpar in box office can clinch credible awards like oscars / gg/Emmy etc and still get ‘returns’ or approval and encouragement translating into ‘rewards’
        8) not in bw–
Where the ‘kjo-incestuous family’ rule applies in awards–are all corrupt.
Even sending entries to oscars is dodgy. Does anyone remember what happened to the film chosen over ‘the lunchbox’?
        9) INTENT of the audience
Most bw audiences/families/couples/groups go to movies to ‘have a good time ‘ or ‘network’ or munching popcorns and/ or enjoying ‘physical/emotional intimacy’ in dark..
In hw-it’s mostly to enjoy the immersive experience of cinema peppered with all the above
        10) INTENT of the artist
Someone said that aamir should be given the ‘freedom’ to work in good films–wtf?
He is a grown up adult and doesn’t depend anyone financially or interms of decision making! It’s his insecurities and though he is much better than most of his contemporaries, it’s his choice. The other day I was seeing interview of vishal bhardwaj and anurag kashyap –why are these guys making what they are knowing they will never make a ‘hit’?

So all these talks and ‘urges’ are fine. As for this ‘shutter talk’ everyday -plz give us a break 🙂

        Like

    • So Let’s leave this daily crap talk of ‘Leo-shutter island’ in bw
And enjoy bw for what it is realising the different factors/constraints that bw works in (I’ve outlined some below)
And talaash wasn’t aimed at being a 80-90 cr earner–aamir isn’t a fool and didnt enlist rani/ Kareena for that! Any newcomer/ b-lister would’ve done? And what’s Kagti doing after a ‘commercially successful’ talaash (critically it was fine)…

Another thing i wanted to add about d3–abhishrek was good and has the best role in all 3 dhooms IMO–so Satyam can relax somewhat…

As of now–lets watch ‘tu hi junoon’ properly …(missed most of it in the cinema!!)
      Lemme see…

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dhoom 3 grossed around 11.50 crore nett on Saturday taking its second weekend business to 21.50 crore nett. The growth on Saturday of 15% was lower than what blockbuster films show on the second Saturday but this is probably due to the fact the collections at the start of the second week of Dhoom 3 are 30-40% higher than the other other blockbusters of the last few years.

The film should still beat the 33 crore nett weekend record of Three idiots though will not get to 40 crore nett for the second weeeknd. This second weekend record has stood for four years and nothing has even come close to beating as no film has even managed a 25 crore nett second weeeknd since 3 Idiots.

Let’s say if Jai Ho had released this Friday, D3 would have tanked by at least 80%. As it is it’s tanking by about 60 to 70%? Even with no stars at that point and even using BOI numbers it was only slightly behind MHN the same year, it did as much As Dhawan’s MSK with Askhay and Salman. The point is this film has always done very well (I got into the Dhoom details sometime back but the idea that this was a small film that went to another level with D2 is something of a myth.. it was of course made bigger with the stars and so on but the first one already had very big numbers).]

It is sad that both of them have even come this far, as this proves that there are more takers for such movies than any other. No movie can come close to 250 without being liked. Unfortunately this also means that such trash movies will keep coming at us. Quality of movies is the biggest sufferer here.

Avengers & Dark Knight made a little more / lesser money than what Titanic did years ago. But these are still qualified as super successes, we need to look at the box office in the same way. As of now any movie that makes more than 200 Cr is a super success.

Firstly, I felt the entrance scenes for Aamir and then Abhishek/Uday to be truly poorly edited and directed. These were really slow and long in length and personally felt it was too much unnecessary action. Obviously this was a “dhoom” film but actually this polarised the film massively. The film completely fails when it enters this space of “dhoom”…instead of fast paced, punchy action and stunts, we get some laboured slow-motion action which is neither creative nor crisply shot. It drags the early part of the film out and from that point the film is playing catch up.
There are some good moments but this is the problem with the film. It lacks a flow, fluency and is trying to intertwine a dark/intense story with the fun/mindless dhoom world. The former world is where the film succeeds (that too only partially) but the dhoom world is a huge let down.
Frankly I found the story and script a compelling one. Sibling rivalry, revenge as a backdrop was a fine idea and could have worked. But it just did not gel well enough throughout and the film is a merely a composition of a few good scenes (the Kamli song, Malang song and thereafter the confrontation scene and intermission twist, a few scenes post interval between the siblings and Abhishek’s palling with Samar scenes) but as a sum for the whole film it just does not work.
I actually felt bored at points, and at points thought wow that was pretty good. It made for too much of an up and down experience whereas the previous Dhoom films though lacked in the scripting they flowed pretty well.
No real issues with performances as I think the film suffers mainly with the way its been directed and edited. Felt Aamir did well post interval and Abhishek was fine. Katrina’s Kamli song – she did well here, seriously hot! Malang was beautifully shot and really that moment on is where the film takes off and gets to some meaningful stuff.

      Saw it today.
      Liked it quite a bit.
Could be trimmed by a few min and Abhi’s part could have been written better. Some implausible elements like an Indian cop calling shots in Chicago
      Otherwise, very nicely done
      Aamir acquits himself quite well
Easily the best one in franchise, tho that is not saying much
WOM is defo mixed on megative side, so it is going to fade fast but Aanir definitely kicked the franchise up a few notches here.

      • Agree with Jayshah and Rajenmaniar overall. Liked this film in parts and especially loved the song sequences Kamli and Malang, so well done, so much painstaking effort on the part of the actors.

This film could do with better editing. Forget the implausible script, let’s take it as given. Some trimming needed. The long drawn out scenes in Dharavi type Mumbai slum — too long and unnecessary. For a moment a I felt I was watching a Rajnikant stunt film from the eighties. Auto bursting through wall, the chase through slum, the beefy looking gundas– senseless and boring. Also later scenes involving cars piling up, crashing — it got boring.

In an Albany theatre, late night show, some half dozen people apparently walked out after the first few minutes ( as per my daughter, who despite being a loyal aamir fan, liked the film less than me, said that she sat thu’ it for aamir). Anyway, the three songs were fine by me, even the third (romantic) number which seemed embarrassingly useless to some. Well, this song shows the secret brother’s secret crush on Katrina, so I let it pass. But I loved the whole dramatic second half.

As a Dhoom film, it failed, did not have the snazzy fluidity of those two earlier films. But as an emotional mainstream Indian drama, it worked for me — and that is why it is a hit, not because it is a Dhoom franchise film.

I can never forgive him for recommending Don Jon ( an indie film from the US) as a romcom. It was trashy porncom of the worst sort and quite a few who watched it at the recent Chennai film fest found themselves feeling nauseated by its crudity.

And somebody here referred to Dhoom 3 as nauseating…gimme a break. Dhoom 3 is a harmless film, can be enjoyed by kids and adults together, good in parts, could’ve been better. Some of these so called arty films that get premiered at Sundance (Don Jon) or Cannes (Holy Motors , another piece of pretentious sex-satire) — give me mny mainstreanm indian films anyday; or lovely iranian, Japanese films, maybe East European, too.

        • Watched second time and it was more enjoyable to watch aamir’s scenes with himself as the brother, and with abhi. The dances looked cliched second time but for the overall dance music effect. Even Uday chopra’s act was likeable when he was delivering those tongue in cheek dialogues or simply playing an intelligent fool. The park scene where aamir suddenly transforms from Samar to Sahir was so stylish. Aamir can experiment with negative roles as those moments have more zing. And as Samar he reminded me of Darsheel Safary and his smart brother in TZP. What is not convincing is abhi indirectly supporting and approving the villaiin. But their scenes together were rather good. And aamir’s negative role in Earth, in Fanaa and now this. Many came for repeat viewing and this on can makeout by their behaviour and comments. Second sunday was almost houseful. the criticism it is receiving on net is not reflecting in the theatres. Katrina reminded me of that tall russian girl in Mera Naam Joker. And the stiff banker was impressive.

They forget the basic thing that children and majority of paying public go for easy entertainment. So yes while D3 could have been much better at the script level given aamir’s involvement – it is an easy one time watch no doubt.

Dhoom 3 had a huge Sunday jump all over as collections for Sunday look to be in the 16-17 crore nett range as per early estimates. The film had phenomenal jump on Sunday as most areas had a big jump.

The film showed less growth on Saturday of around 15% but Sunday jumped over 40%. The film has collected in the region of 38 crore nett in its second weekend which is the highest second weekend collection ever beating the 33 crore nett figure of Three Idiots.

The second week will be phenomenal as there is a holiday on Wednesday which will bump up collections.

      • On D3 BOI and Taran have the same number more or less. The absurdity though is that Taran took the since ridiculed producer number of K3 and therefore D3 is still behind K3 by his count when it’s actually already ahead by 40 crores or so. Of course Taran can hardly admit this now! But this applies to CE too is a somewhat lesser sense. Most likely that will was in the 3I range. But the producer total was 15 crores or so higher which is fairly standard these days. Except that on D3 the producers haven’t done this and so everyone has the same number. Certainly no one has a much higher number than anyone else. And so whatever the film does the differential with the next highest grosser would actually be much greater than the ‘official’ list would suggest!

How for d3–/ taran is being quoted here left right n centre every hour ESP the comparison with k3

          But
When it comes to tarans k3 numbers– NOT ONE of tarans multiple breakdowns / comparisons end up here– when they do, they are posted as selected ‘extracts’ NOT INCLUDING the 248 ish cr of k3 — is this a ‘coincidence’ — in 1000s of posts here lol

Also for d3 & k3–it’s taran who has been ‘consistently’ doing his ‘job’ in an ‘unbiased’ way
But it’s BOI who under reported k3 to such an extent (coupled with roshans ‘reaction’ to this boi nonsense) which led to the ‘gap’)
With d3–boi has not left much ‘gap’ to begin with

D3 is doing well (nothing unexpected) infact under performing compared to expectations & potential–but let’s leave that–
Not that these things matter overall either ways –but are illustrative of the INTENT 🙂

        • Let’s try this once again in English though this is not one of your strengths. On D3 the numbers are the same with every source. So it really doesn’t matter who you go with. With K3 Taran was 50 crores ahead (or whatever it was). Because he goes with the producer number in every case. Now I’ll let you figure out the rocket science here. I don’t follow Taran or BOI or anybody else. It depends on what the ‘narrative’ on each film’s box office is.

On the rest yes evidently 350 is the minimal bar for D3 while it was 50 for K3.

while English is one of your weaker subjects you still make it with flying colors here compared to the grade you get on honesty..

But hey I’m sure those additional 50 crores will be useful for Suzanne when demanding her alimony..

Let him speak and if he adds some substance (like his review of Walter Mitty) then fine…but when it comes to Hrithik and his opinions and logic of box office, might as well just forget his comments. They add up like the KRRISH numbers – a complete mess up involving some corrupt souls.
On D3 – yes indeed it does not pass the trending theory with flying colours. It however does do something no film has done (except CE) – it has shattered records and by huge margins everywhere. It is not the film like 3 Idiots. It did not tip-toe its way into the 200 crore club either. And it did not “crash” after a big first week. It’s second sunday is 50% of its first sunday! Its second weekend is 60% drop and anyone looking at CE, Ra.One, Dabangs, Bodyguard, EK Ta Tiger, Dons, Ready, Agneepath, Krrish’s, Rowdy’s etc. etc. etc will know this is the best “drop” of the lot on the bigger scale of the lot. It simply proves how vastly overrated those numbers were and indeed it may prove the D3 numbers are too overrated but not on the scale of its predecessors.
It’s in the same vein as most biggies since 3 Idiots…only just 25-50% bigger!!! That itself is an achievement. And yes it has had the holidays…but the reality is, only one day so far, less than all the biggies till now or equal to.
Stack the overseas totals and its just a big monster that sprints fast and loses steam after 2 weeks (Its second week will be relatively better than anything since 3 Idiots on the big films scale). Whereas the others have been elephants losing steam after 1 week! It’s like comparing Usain Bolt to the womens 100 metre champion. They are on different speeds running the same race. Just Usain is physically different to the womens field, just like D3 is a different beast compared to K3 or CE.

          { the competition factor DOES affect a film but only if that film and the “competition” has superlative WOM. In K3’s case, it did not. Its not as if both films were running to packed houses and eating into each others numbers like say TZP/Welcome or Gadar/Lagaan. One film was being chosen over another as one was “lacking”. Audiences will always turn up if the film is liked. Yes it will hurt business, but not to the proportions being suggested. CE showed that It overhauled OUATIM2 pretty quickly. People seem to forget CE had like a holiday every week of its run. So yes it had competition, but it had plenty of holiday edge, more than any film ever has. It made it “up” this way }

  79. Having finally watched it, my take is that it’s best of the franchise. The dark story of the twins is completely different from what we’ve been used to in the series. And the respective characters of the twins are well developped and well enacted. It’s not like the traditional stylish villain like John was in the first part or the loverboy-thief that Hrithik was in the second. Here the complicity, the bond and the conflicts between the twins are very well written and portrayed.

It’s a very complex role that Aamir has pulled off well. For first time in the franchise, I started rooting for the villain. The Jackie Shroff track strikes an emotional cord and you want Sahir/Samar’s mission to succeed.

It’s a pity for Abhishek that while the film is better, his part in the series is getting only worse. Jai and Ali’s parts are merely functional. I can understand that Abhishek signed for the film when he was at an all time low at the BO, but I would be hoping that he signs for the next one in the series only if his role is better.

I would even say that his role in D2 was better. The main problem in D2 probably was with comparisons of his physique with Hrithik’s and a certain lack of footage in the post interval portions. But he got the upper hand in the final scene and in some of the confrontations sequences there. And at least the fights were even in the first 2 parts. Now, he is being made to lose even that.

In D3, Abhishek does try to make the best out of a vastly under-written and one-note role. The scene right before the interval where he tries to expose Aamir and doesn’t want to give up even he has no proof, reminds me of the airport scene in DMD. But sadly, there isn’t enough of these kind of moments for him in the film.

But I also agree with Satyam here that the villain’s character is really well written, well developped, well portrayed and it’s much more complex as well. It eclipses everything else.

For once, the series requires a real actor to portray the villain’s parts and they have a damned good one there.

It’s an all out Aamir Khan film. I liked the track of twins a lot more than the chases. And that track elevates the movie to a completely different level.

      • THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

Havent been a fan of Ben Stiller (!) and consider him somewhat of a slightly more ‘respectable’ Adam sandler (if that helps).
But perhaps deriving inspiration from another Ben (affleck!), stiller does double-duty here as actor/director to attempt his most ambitious venture till date. He nearly pulls it off while attempting to hit it out of the park -but just…

However this movie comes with some inherent disadvantages. It’s not Oscar bait material and misses having a ‘disabled’ protagonist and also doesn’t have the ‘gravity’ novelty. Most importantly doesn’t have the ‘snob appeal’.

To add to that, it is a ‘cross/confusing genre’ problem. It’s a fantasy comedy adventure romcom plus social satire & travelogue all rolled into one. Based on a light Short story, many value additions and back stories are added to give it punch. It’s about an office drone Walter Mitty who works as a ‘negative assets manager’ in the life magazine based in NYC. Mitty misplaces one negative of a celebrated photographer & it’s the cross continental search for that elusive negative that forms the bulk of the movie. It helps when this encompasses Greenland, Iceland and Afghanistan. Authenticity is not important /adhered to here but one does get to see exquisite picturesque locales of these countries laced with some good comedic moments.
Kirsten wigg is one of my favourite comediennes and features here –first as mitts online curiosity (eharmony) and then as his corworker.
After the ‘tree of life’ sean penn is seen in another cameo-as an enigmatic elusive photographer. I enjoyed this more since one of my coviewers is into photography and she had useful things to add about technicalities.
Overall a film thays not great shakes but enjoyable and better than u would give it credit for (just like Mitty)

        • I soemwhat liked this cute little Mitty film but seems it is doing well 150+ & may notch some oscar nominations as well…
          Here’s Forbes —

But his path is about more than merely discovering life by experiencing excitement and travel — Mitty’s father died when he was a teenager, and Mitty was forced to get a job to help support his family, and from that moment on he shrank into himself and became so afraid of loss that he stopped enjoying life. A travel log he got from his father remains empty, a stark representation of potential unfulfilled and a life unlived.

There are plenty of films that explore themes about parental loss and the loss of childhood innocence, and about the need to not be afraid to enjoy life instead of letting it become just a series of events that happen to you on your way to the grave, with more overt pure drama and intense character study. But the winning charm of Walter Mitty is that it tackles these issues in a straightforward and fun way that can be poignant at the same time it reminds you part of enjoying life is perhaps not taking yourself too seriously.

Stiller, who not only stars but directs, understands that lesson in the context of storytelling itself. He lets us see Mitty’s pain over the loss of his father and the fact he regrets that the loss led him to lose a great deal more in life, but we are allowed to smile through that pain and focus on the bigger point that it’s never too late for a second chance.

The use of Papa John’s as a glaring representation of mediocrity and of “the moment everything went wrong in life” is wonderfully played, and those who parrot the simplistic claim that this is merely a “commercial” for the pizza company and some sort of cheap product placement are proving they really didn’t pay attention or just don’t understand the most obvious thematic points.

Kristen Wiig gets a rare chance to play a mostly regular person, but has one terrific comedic moment in Mitty’s musical-number fantasy. She and Stiller shared a nice chemistry that helps their few scenes together. Adam Scott provides a real stand-out supporting performance that’s hilarious every time he’s on screen. But this is ultimately Ben Stiller’s story to carry, and it was going to rise or fall on his likeability and how much we sympathize with his character. On that level, the film definitely succeeds, managing to balance the personality of a man who has given up on himself with the inner dignity and reflection that avoid him being a timid cliche who magically overcomes his fears by having his daydreams come to life. The daydreams here are a reflection not of his weakness, but of the fact he’s still alive on the inside and only needed to find faith in himself again, in part by confronting and admitting how much the loss of his father affected him and the rest of his family.

  80. At least this SRK fan wont go into hiding as suggested by someone because CE is far far superior to D3. In CE the woman/heroine was not reduced to a glorified extra used for skin show while the *mini sized attractive to men* hero shows off hogging the whole show.
Shame!!! Rs100cr were easily earned by this. For all his social upliftment of women this is poor show. Shame on him. But of course he and his fans are finally like ordinary substandard people interested in the money and records no matter “how”. This “how” was much better with CE.

Your logic like apex’s in trying to find out ways of ‘how’ d3 is making money is very amusing. Between it being hrithiks movie and now katrinas skin show im looking forward to hearing it was SRK coughing at the premiere and releasing a magic flem from his throat that got into all these Indians to watch the movie. When such simple things stare in your face why look for the most irrelevant of reasons. Katrina has shown her sexy moves in tees maar khan over Xmas…it hardly helped. She literally had some naughty scenes with srk in jthj with him all over her….that film made a modest 120 odd crore. Did not hearing you screaming to the hills then about katrinas skin show or her bedroom scenes!

        • Katrina plays an acrobat-dancer, looks sexy and beautiful, never vulgar. Dhoom 3 is a family film that plenty of kids are watching; and there is one chaste quick kiss with Katrina-Aamir. No way is this film cheapening Katrina — even her fans are not saying so. Yes, her roles is smallish, but not miniscule as is being made out by interested mischief-makers. Aamir is there through most of the film — and that’s how the story is– he plays a double role. Abhishek has a good amount of screen time too. Here is a link to what the director has said about this matter.

          http://www.hindustantimes.com/entertainment/bollywood/dhoom-3-was-not-written-with-aamir-khan-in-mind-vijay-krishna-acharya/article1-1167934.aspx

          Excerpts:

Because Aamir’s character is so important, for Aamir’s fans, it’s an Aamir Khan film. I’d like to think of it as a Vijay Krishna Acharya film. Aamir’s performance was outstanding, but I think every actor excelled in what they did.

So, it wasn’t written with him in mind?
With Dhoom (the franchise), or any other film, we finish the script and then take it to an actor. I find it easier to tell someone what’s in my head once it’s on paper, rather than write with someone in mind.

          Katrina’s role seems negligible.
I love all the characters I write. If we were to think of it in conventional Hindi film terms, then she is the heroine, and she is there for three-fourths of the film… But, for me, as a writer, the process was fairly organic.

Uday Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan didn’t get a song this time.
I did want to do a song for Jai (Abhishek) and Ali (Uday). We’d planned to use it in promotion. But we were running a tight deadline, and Uday and Abhishek also got busy with their respective commitments and it didn’t happen.

        • Are you serious?! Katrina’s Kamli moves were straight out of a stripper’s routine! Since when has stripping with legs akimbo been considered chaste or classy?! The fact that Katrina has a ‘sweet’, passive demeanor even whilst playing the fantasy fulfilling acrobat-stripper(!) just makes it more regressive, not less! I understand that you are an Aamir fan, but there is no need to combat even the most reasonable criticisms with a crudely dismissive ‘put a sock on it, haters!’.

Certainly this hyper-sexualisation of women is not something that is unique to Aamir’s cinema, but rather a common malaise with Bollywood; all said, I’d blame the writer/director far more for this than Aamir, but to deny that the handling of women in this film left a lot to be desire is simply delusional. And the blonde cop had it even worse than Kat!

And anybody who thinks that Katrina has no box office pull of her own and that her item numbers do not add significantly to the box office total is living in la-la land. None of which is to deny Aamir’s clearly obvious box-office king status, but give Katrina some credit too; her contribution to these mind-boggling totals was nowhere near as insignificant asin’s to Ghajini, or Kareena’s to 3I.

          Like

        • agreed on most counts. However I’d make a somewhat different point in one regard. I think and somewhat counter-intuitively that these seemingly hyper-sexualized representations often have the opposite effect of desexualizing their subjects altogether. This goes hand-in-hand with the gym body model where increasingly the female (and even moreso the male these days!) body comes across as a product and not completely ‘human’ at that! Which is why we saw people here (and elsewhere) far more invested in Katrina as the ‘result’ of a great workout regimen (and ethic… the only ‘ethic’ that is recognized for actors these days.. they can ‘act’ on their way to the gym almost incidentally!) than lusting after her in any old-fashioned sense of the word. Because the gym model irons out all real personality (and persona) and really renders even people who are physically quite different like peas in a pod because they’re all aspiring towards the very same ‘end product’. And so we live in the age of anodyne, insipid sexuality in every sense. There is of course a kind of democratic impulse here even if in very perverse form — the idea that anyone can ‘become’ this by simply working out as earnestly as possible! A similar criticism is sometimes made with respect to Hollywood and it is true even there to a degree but it is still far better than in Bollywood. Because in Hollywood they can still turn on those classic sexuality archives when they want to. Currently one can witness this in Wolf of Wall Street and the smoldering presence of Margot Robbie! Even otherwise one comes across plenty of women in lots of Hollywood films who seem ‘desirable’ in that more traditional sense even if here too there is a certain standardization at work. But in Bollywood the Katrina Kaif paradigm even if most ‘discreditably’ (to my mind anyway!) represented by her is much more the norm.

        • Jayshah, when I said I blame the writer/ director/ producer, I only meant that they (and not Aamir) were responsible for writing and portraying Katrina’s part in this way. The actual ‘blame’ for this consumerist portrayal of women lies with everybody from the actresses who choose to accept the status quo despite having the power to produce their own films, to the public who lap up this portrayal of women. However, ultimately it is the directors and producers who have the power to decide how the actress will be portrayed. A 3I or a CE also made plenty of money without any such objectification, so it’s not that they can’t make the call to include more well-rounded female characters.

It’s not that I have a problem with ‘sexy’ gym bodies or dance routines, or think that actresses shouldn’t accept them. What I dislike is when all the female characters are reduced to improbable fantasy-fulfilling objects whose sole purpose is to titillate, and it is here that the objectification of men and women in Bollywood defers. No matter how much effort the hero puts into building his abs, he’s never reduced to nothing but a glorified stripper with an abbreviated role in his own movie! It really doesn’t take much imagination of effort to give your female characters more to do than just strip whilst spinning cartwheels or simper sweetly at the hero during romantic duets! I’m not saying don’t have the item girls, I’m just saying don’t making every single female character into an item girl of sorts. These are choices that only the filmmaker can make.

P.S. Satyam not sure what you meant with Margot? She fits perfectly into the gym-body idea of sexy I.e. Blonde, generically beautiful and curvaceous yet toned. Or did you mean that she has a less synthetic/ passive screen presence than Kat?

Also, south indian’s are shown as having big hearts and great hospitality-recall the scene where the villagers let SRK and Deepika stay in their village for free. And the scene after that where Thangabali (the villain) comes to the village to take Deepika away but the villagers protect the couple saying things like “So what if we’re in the south of india, we are in the central of people’s hearts” and what not.

In a way this is the old Manmohan Desai compact where you indulge in lots of ethnic or religious stereotypes but always with a great deal of affection. Off line film fans don’t really take part in such SRK vs Aamir battles. As regards Chennai Express, I watched part of the film on tv ( could not watch more due to power failure)– and liked what i saw. My friend 9 an older film buff like me) watched it in the theater and said she found it regressive and mocking towards south indians. However two of my nieces did not find anything offensive in the film, said that they laughed along, enjoying the film for whatever it was worth. So, here in south india, CE, has been received warmly by many, but also managed to upset a few.

        • Aamir since Lagaan and progressively so over time has represented the complete deconstruction of the SRK paradigm. I’ve expanded on all of this elsewhere and won’t repeat everything here but from the prestige film to the absolute top grossers Aamir has really taken SRK to the cleaners in very many ways. In the 90s though Aamir was still doing well for himself, specially considering some of the subjects he was attempting and even though he had his own highs from a huge grosser like RH to a cool film like Rangeela overall it was still the SRK age and he dominated popular urban consciousness more than any other peer of his in the post-DDLJ period. But with Lagaan and then DCH Aamir reinvented himself in a big way. His work became the defining model in so many ways. Johar himself admitted as much in his recent Koffee episode which is really the ultimo confirmation of the point I’m trying to make. But in any case this is what the SRK fan (most of them anyway) can never forgive Aamir for. And there is (for the same reasons) a certain truth to this resentment. It’s not just about competition. Salman has been doing far better than SRK since Dabanng but no SRK fan is bothered by this. Because of course the kind of cinema Salman is associated with he doesn’t deconstruct anyone! Aamir is a wholly different deal.

He was the bloody centerpoint of the film, he was there in two important roles, his role was bigger than that of Uday ( who managed to charm me in his small role) . But Katrina was an important figure in the film, significant in moving the story along, and so was Abhishek. All characters got their respective screen times, as per the demands of the story. It was an Aamir film basically even as far as the script went. Aamir himself has acknowledged Katrina’s contribution, the hard work she put in– and here Aamir is being dismissed by his prime- hater as somebody who is misogynistic in his attitude to women. What utter BS.

Aamir is losing out even as the film is winning. It’s not fair, but that’s how the film-internet world works. Hate somebody’s guts, whack him down…i don’t do it, have never done it with any star, and cannot accept it. Saner people than me keep away from internet film forums.

I loved Katrina, despite her medium sized (NOT brief) role. Loved her in the Kamli song sequence, loved both Aamir and Katrina in the fabulous Malang song sequence, liked the pair again in the third romantic song Tu hi Junoon ( which on the face of it seems like an interruption, but is actually needed to show the autistic Aamir’s secret crush on aaliya/Katrina.

Aamir and Katrina worked their butts off through two years while the film was made, did justice to the acrobatic dance sequences.

I liked Katrina a lot in Ek Tha Tiger. I feel that Katrina’s famous has a luminous quality that lights up the screen. And no, i don’t think she got short shrift in Dhoom 3. She was there as the film closed, carrying on with the circus act even though Sahir and Samar had passed on, beyond the circus.

Aamir’s films have been as respectful to women overall as any other big favoured superstar. Haters, put a sock in it.

It’s always harder to make a Worst-Of list than one chronicling the best of Hindi cinema, largely because we’re all so spoilt for choice.

    Thumb-rules, therefore, come into play.

My basic rule is to pick films that come with certain expectations (as opposed to something that stars Sunny Leone or Shahid Kapoor), to look at films made by directors (or featuring actors) who should know what they’re doing, and to leave small B-grade films out of the mix unless they are, of course, truly ghastly.

With that in mind, here are the films that make up the bottom of 2013’s barrel:

    Krrish 3

Many a bad blockbuster minted money this year, but Krrish 3 stood significantly below even the Chennai Expresses and Dhoom3s of the world with this spectacularly stupid film, a film that — going by the box office receipts — has instantly lowered the collective IQ of our nation’s children by at least 20 points.

And then it sits and sells it wristbands, making them (and indeed, all of us) pay to watch the commercial.

  83. Dhoom 3 May Achieve The Toughest All Time Record

    Tuesday 31st December 2013 11.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dhoom 3 has already broken most all time records be it the Domestic circuits or the Overseas circuits and may achieve the toughest record which is the United Kingdom total gross record which is held by My Name Is Khan at £2,630,000. Dhoom 3 is over £2 million in 11 days.

The film is already the highest grosser ever in US/Canada, Gulf and Australia but the UK record is tougher task and should take the film around 3 weeks. A £3 million total would be awesome but its a struggling market as prior to Dhoom 3, six out of the top ten grossers were films released prior to 2010.

Another tough record is the Mumbai circuit record which stands at 79 crore nett by Three Idiots but this will be broken either by the end of week two or a day or two later.

The film will have steady collections on Tuesday and good jump on Wednesday for New Years day. The collections will slow down after New Years Day as that is the trend post the New Year.

Its difficult to put a number on the lifetime business of the film so early as the film still as some steam left but the range is looking 265-275 crore nett for lifetime business.

Its like blaming the rape victim.
Katrina may have read a script that had her doing more than just what it ended up being after AK was finished with his tweeks and changes to hog the show and sideline the others.
But the fact that AKs heroine’s treatment was what o e is not hopi g for for film heroines.

She danced well and yes it was rather naughty. Hey ho. I found aishwariyas dancing in d2 just as fine. And madhuri’s busting dances from the 90s fine. Call it what you may though…i would not walk into a cinema just for this. Its not worth my 10 pounds. Its oldgolds insinuation that the dance bought in 100 crs is what i am debating. I don’t believe that for a second and anyone who does really misses the point about art and cinema overall. People do not just walk into theatres with their families to watch tasteless dances. Its a ridiculous comment just made to chasten d3’s collections and avoid giving any credit to aamir. Any argument oldgold makes is indirectly to mock or dilute aamir. The whole feminist act is just to cover up what is actually happening here.

        • Spot on Jayshah. Thios whole sudden feminist outburst is simply being done to dismiss Aamir’s huge contribution to Dhoom 3. As you wrote, the Kamli song was naughty, but NOT risque. Yes, she removed her jacket, shirt etc one by one…but finally she is down to decent sporty looking inner wear, NOT some two piece bikini with her bums and boobs showing almost totally– which is what areal striptease would be. This whole sham argument about ‘poor Katrina’ stinks. And I would say this even if I were not an aamir fan.

        • LS- LOL! So a woman stripping off her clothes with her legs akimbo for the titillation of the male audience is perfectly family friendly and respectful of women…as long as she is wearing ‘sporty’ inners! Thanks for this incredibly interesting new definition of famil friendly!

In the face of such ‘ingenuity’, I’m at a loss for how to respond, so I can only proffer this hilarious and intelligent article that David Mitchell wrote in response to a similar statement! (I’m referring to the bit about pole dancing, not the bit about MPs wives, obviously).

          http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2010/apr/18/students-pole-dancing-david-mitchell

Personally, I far prefer Aamir to pretty much every other Bollywood hero out there, and I tremendously enjoyed a large number of his films (not including D3). However,I will not resort to making statements as ludicrous as labelling a strip-tease-inspired song as family-friendly, classy entertainment in order to prove that I don’t hate him!

          Like

        • To clarify further, I don’t blame Aamir for Kamli, nor do I think that such representation of women is unique to D3, so this is not a question of taking credit way from him (and obviously he’s done more for the cause of female empowerment through SMJ alone that any actor in Bollywood). This is simply in response to the idea that Kamli is ‘family-friendly and classy’ and that disagreeing with this (frankly nonsensical) estimation of the song makes one a hater!

          Like

        • I would agree it is not classy. It is what is it. Seductive, quite naughty and am sure some will be offended. But i only entered the debate on the grounds that this dance or strip is what is adding many crores to the collections of d3. And this sudden outburst is rather less about a victim and more one more attack on aamir. Not by you but by the resident aamir basher.

LOL! But according to some Aamir fans, she has displayed a bravura performance in this film, and specifically in this song (despite the fact that it was comprised of gymnastics performed by her body double!). Also it was a classy, child-friendly song, not an item number! 😉

        • Think OG’s implicit suggestion is rather incredible.. the idea that anyone casts Katrina in any role for her acting credentials! Or that after doing dozens of item numbers she has any illusions about this! The most incredible one of all might be OG discovering feminism with D3!

Of course it’s rather amusing to find Aamir questionable on these grounds.. Lagaan, DCH, RDB, Fanaa, Ghajini, 3I.. if Aamir’s an exploiter of women in cinema he’s kept it awfully well-hidden! A fair percentage of those films even have women doing the sorts of roles that one hardly sees in cinema anymore! And then there’s Talaash where the entire film revolves around the violence done to women in a certain globalized present.

It’s equally appalling to find SRK ‘better’ on these grounds. KKHH? The woman who is never desirable as a tomboy but who becomes so the moment she fits into the standard traditional Indian part? Mohabbatein? The woman who best serves her calling in life (and death!) by serving as a bridge between two male generations? The woman who’s at the recipient of lewd humor in Ra One? Some of these examples could be multiplied. Now I’m not going to be crazy about this and suggest SRK is somewhat worse than many of his peers in this regard though certainly his most iconic cinema is regressive in these matters (the girl doing the item number is not automatically more regressive than one clad in a saree.. it all depends on the contexts). But the idea that his films are somehow more enlightened than Aamir’s in this regard is the stuff of fiction. In fact the very opposite is true.

  86. I am amused by feminism suddenly erupting for D 3. If Vidya does, it is artistic and if Katrina does it is vulgar and taking advantage of. Dhoom 3 is not about some artistic interpretation. It is about chases, girls and the works in addition to a back story which was responsible more for its success than anything else. I remember in one Hollywod movie of Arnie, the wife becomes a stripper just to entice her husband who thinks her as plain jane. Women are objectified even if they wear a salwar kameez. Deepika is selling her legs in every second movie. What Katrina is doing, we have east europeans doing in every masala movie with the hero. When a star does this type of thing, the star is not demeaned but if a starlet does this, she is not respected. And what about Helen’s dances? Or Bindu’s?

    Like

    • Sanjana, as I said earlier, its not the objectification itself that I have a problem with, but the nature of the objectification. The problem that I had with D3 (and I did say that it was an industry-wide malaise and in no way unique to this one film) is that there were only two female characters and that both of them were glorified sex objects. Vidya’s role in TDP is in no way comparable, not only because her appearance completely challenged the prevailing gym body norms of Bollywood, but also because the film put Slk front and center, and it did portray her emotional vulnerability and desire, I.e. it didn’t just treat her as a fantasy-fulfilling object.

The problem here is that Aamir fans are claiming that Kamli was a classy and beautiful song to watch with the family! I don’t think that anybody has made such absurd allegations about the striptease routine in Arnie’s film or about the item songs in masala movies!

I’m not saying that this type of song is unique to Aamir’s cinema; it’s certainly not! But don’t go around claiming that these songs are artistic and family-friendly. Nobody asked the audience to take their children with them to watch TDP, for example! And SRK too was criticized for unnecessarily sexualising a children’s film like RaOne, so let’s not pretend that this criticism is unique to Aamir, Katrina or D3.

      • Ami–I just spoke to my daughter (lives in NY state). She was not too happy with the film and was wishing Aamir had not starred in it. I argued that the film was ok despite its illogicalities, but aamir did a good job of carrying the film to its conclusion.. Mainly However both of us (different genertions) feel that the Kamli song showed Katrina’s fit body in a classy manner. The word classy was her choice, not mine, but I have to agree.
Finally the jacket- shirt-pants combi is flung off, and a sort of striptease but Katrina looks so spiffy in her top, shorts and boots. And her putting a leg on the shoulders of aamir — it was the finale to her song, a non-verbal act that says, ok, i’ve auditioned extremely well, accept it. THAT’s woman power talking.

My family-friends circle here did not find anything cheesy about the song. So far nobody feels that Katrina was exploited. Kamli was done stylishly, IMO. And of course the Malang song, I just loved that sequence. Both actors were so fit and lithe as needed in the circus gymnastics scenes. And they have worked hard to do these scenes, need to be appreciated.

I know you did not like the film, but this is just to inform that many viewers have found nothing offensive in this film (other than the extreme masalification–those early scenes involving auto rick , local thugs chasing…what a bore). Towards the interval the film became better and stayed so till the end. It was finally a film that lacked cohesion–part Rajnikat eighties style, part Dhoom type and part Hindi film emotional drama. Despite it all many have connected to it and that’s why the films is a hit.

And, these sudden pangs of feminism- the less said the better.
There is a place and NEED for feminism but not as perceived here.
Men love beautiful women and there is going to be presentation of females in a way that pleases men. As long as it is not done by force or deceit and is presented in a decent manner, I am not going to criticise it. What is decent or not is subjective.
Personally, I found Kajol’s initial song in DDLJ to be one of most disturbing sequences in main stream BW films but not many had similar objections and that is ok. As I said, it is subjective.
OG’s comments ( as usual ) reek of insincerity and are in line with the purpose of her participation on blog. Nothing surprising.
I object to the brand of feminism which suggests that it is ok to drool at an ugly women but not a sexy woman!

    Like

    • You’ve set-up a straw man here since nobody on this blog has suggested that men should drool at ugly and not sexy women. I myself am the biggest fan of Deepika, whom I think we can all agree falls on the beautiful and not the ugly side of the fence. 😛 I have no problem with gym-toned bodies and sexy songs. What I do have a problem with is when women are not represented in any other way EXCEPT in these songs!

It is only the anti-handsome-man brigade on this blog, who gloat every time a film starring a short/ ugly/ old man (always paired opposite ravishingly beautiful woman, of course) succeeds despite not even liking the actual film, and that constantly pour venom on any actor who dares to cultivate a six-pack or cater to the female gaze in anyway. No objections to this from your side?

        Who are you referring to??
I have always mercilessly and cruelly and probably unjustifiably poked fun at Southern actors of yesteryears who were fat and hirsute! And, have always suggested ABJr should get fitter!
I have no problem with six packs except when it is done with the aid of drugs and it is quite possible SRK,Aamir,HR,Salman, Shahid,John are guilty here. Just hate the idea of a gym body created with steroids!

        Like

        • I’m not saying that you are part of this brigade, I’m saying that the position that you (erroneously) attribute to feminists on SS, is actually one that only the anti-handsome -man brigade on this blog is guilty of! 😛 (Not talking about Satyam here BTW, because I obviously understand that his objection to the gym body is ideological).

And just as the heroes might be guilty of steroid abuse, most of the actresses are also guilty of surgical enhancements, lip suction and starvation/ anorexia to achieve their figures, Certainly, Katrina looks to have been under the knife on more than one occasion! 😛

          Like

        • Agree about surgical enhancementsa tho in my books ( may be unjustifiably) steroids is a bigger crime.
I think the public at large has a preference for certain bodily attributes and one cant object to that. One CAN object to how they deal with a situation where someone does not fit that stereotypical attributes!

          Like

        • Why is surgery considered bad? Don’t we use foundation and other things to enhance our face or dress differently to look better? That is also artificial. At the end of day it is people’s choice whatever they want to do, if it is not harming them in any way.

ps – May be in 50 years, it will gain acceptability like Gay/Lesbian marriage.

          Like

        • I think that cosmetic surgery is undesirable, because people usually use it to achieve an ideal of generic beauty I.e. Iron out any personal anomalies or uniqueness that separate them from the typical ideal of symmetric beauty. The usual procedure at the Miss India contest, for instance, is that a woman’s face is actually measured against a set of measures that are considered to constitute symmetric beauty, and even if her face deviates slightly, she is recommended cosmetic surgery to ‘fix’ this. A society where such surgery is widely acceptable and it becomes the the norm is frightening to me since it will be populated with a sea of supposedly sexy clones who are indistinguishable from each other! Such horror stories are already common in South Korea. And certain cosmetic surgeries do carry unnecessary health risks (for example, breast implants).

And in any case, starvation diets, which many actresses use to achieve their ‘gym bodies’, are deeply harmful to health and create unrealstic body image and pressure in vulnerable young girls, in the same way that steroid use is slowly beginning to do for young men.

That’s part of the reason why I love Deepika, because she’s naturally beautiful, and doesn’t resort to tactics like skin lightening. Also, you can tell that her body is toned because of her athletic career, and not anorexia.

          Like

        • Gay/ lesbian marriage is a particularly disingenuous anomaly to offer, since this is about combating social norms to be your natural self, whilst surgery is about giving in to social pressure to change your natural self! I can understand if a woman has a cleft lip or some such problem, but it takes an enormous amount of insecurity and pressure for an already beautiful actress to get such a procedure done! It boils down to unrealistic and unhealthy social expectations not individual freedom/ choice.

          Like

        • If all of them look symmetrical it will lose the USP associated with it. We want to look different and better. The idea of beauty/fashion changes with time. On example I quote often is Planet of Apes where Apes considered themselves beautiful and humans ugly or in some part of world fat women are considered beautiful. If enhancement increases your confidence it might help you with self esteem. Many ladies go under knife after pregnancy to regain the before pregnancy shape. I don’t see anything wrong if you do or don’t do it. Of course there is cost associated with it; financial and physical pain.

ps. – My comments are not directed specifically for actors.
ps1. – Actors are more in limelight and we tend to see more examples of them. So it is always easy to see Gay or Lesbian fashion designer/actor/players than regular people. Sometimes we question why there are disproportionate more in famous group? May be financial freedom helps in individual’s choices. In similar vein if plastic surgery is affordable, accessible and safe for common people; may be the stigma associated with it also go away!

          Like

        • Yes, but why do these women even feel the need to bear the unnecessary financial cost and physical pain to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies so quickly? It’s because of the enormous social pressure exerted by the media, which harshly condemns women like Aishwarya and makes them feel insecure and instead declares those who get back to size zero shape in a few weeks time as aspirational and inspirational. It’s extremely naive to deny this harmful pressure that forces women to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty and makes them feel inadequate if they not only don’t lose weight, but also don’t do it instantaneously after giving birth.

The surgery is symptomatic of a society that is extremely intolerant of those who don’t fit into it’s very narrow definition of beauty, whatever tha definition might happen to be. Whether this definition is a size zero figure or a voluptuous body is immaterial. Societies that prefer larger women can be equally harmful; for example, in Mauritiana there is a strong preference for fat women, and this has resulted in a ‘self-inflicted obesity epidemic’ where women force-feed themselves enormous quantities of fattening food and become very sick in the process.

          Like

        • Just to clarify, I’m not blaming the women who undergo surgery themselves, but the larger social undercurrents that cause them to take these actions.

          Like

        • A society that truly sanctified individual choice and confidence would be one that allows both an Aishwarya and a Shilpa Shetty to be equally confident about their post-pregnancy bodies, not a society that hounds, berates and cruelly mocks a woman into feeling a lack of confidence that can only be rectified by going under the knife immediately after giving birth.

          Like

        • Also, all the Bollywood actresses do look symmetrical and skinny and all the actors do look muscular; far from losing it’s USP, this has only caused them to chase a more extreme version of the hourglass figure/ pouty lips/ six-pack abs to look better!

          Like

    • And, it is 21st century and it might come as news to some but even Indian women are comfortable with their sexuality. Sex is not a dirty word and women ( actresses included ) are more than happy and willing to exercise the power of their sexuality and there is nothing wrong with it. In usch instances they are hardly the victims. The true victims are poor men who fall a prey to these and spend their hard earned money ( almost a 100 crores according to some) to catch a glimpse of a skimpily clad Katrina for a few brief moments!

In any case, your assertion that this brand of feminism boils down to wanting men to ogle at ugly and not sexy women is equally laughable! There is difference between asking for women to have a little more to do in cinema than JUST take their clothes off, and condemning female sexiness! they share, turns out to be a national-level gymnast from Allahabad.
    Siddharth Nigam
Says the Dhoom 3 director Vijay Krishna Acharya,”Siddharth is fantastic. He’s a national-level gymnast. All the jumps and flips that you see him do in the film were done by him. He’s a boy from Allahabad. When I saw him, I saw something special in him. You know children are so unaffected. He was with me for three months. I designed a workshop with him….He was here to see the film last week. I am waiting for the kid to grow up so he can do Dhoom 10. I am hoping he remains unaffected.”

I locate Siddharth far away from Mumbai in Allahabad where he studies at boarding school and trains for gymnastics at the school.

Though he plays a 10-year old in Dhoom 3, Siddharth is actually 13. And a normal excitable 13-year old.

Asks Siddharth, “What are people saying about me in Mumbai? I did attend the screening. But after that, I came back to boarding school. I really enjoyed the experience of being in this big film with big stars. So far, I had only seen those stars on screen. Suddenly Jackie Uncle and Aamir Uncle were in front of me. It was unreal.”

Director Vijay Krishna Acharya saw him in a Bournvita ad and signed him on.

Says Siddharth, “They had seen my ad. They called me. I went for the auditions. And I was on.” Since Aamir had two different roles to perform, his junior avatar too had to go through the very complex motions of creating two different characters.
    Siddharth Nigam
The boy sailed through the task. “I had no problem doing any of the scenes. The only time I had a problem was when I had to call Jackie Uncle, ‘Papa’. That felt ….strange. Otherwise kab shuroo hua kab khatam pataa nahin chala. Bahot mazaa aaya.”

After the shooting, Siddharth returned to Allahabad and boarding school but was again back in Mumbai to see the film for a screening to which he was invited.

Says the wonder kid, “When I saw myself on screen, it felt like it was someone else, not me.”

At the film’s screening Siddharth met his idol. “Amitabh Uncle was there. I had never in my wildest dreams imagined I’d actually see him in person some day. But then I never thought I’d be in a movie either.”

Gymnastics are Siddharth’s first love. “I’d like to focus on that. But if I get good offers, I’d be happy to do more movies.”

These are the kind of numbers that are expected whenever YRF signs on top tier names. After DDLJ, neither DTPH nor Mohabatein lived up to their full potential at the box office. Even the much hyped Veer-Zaara slacked. YRF finally ditched their favorite star (SRK) and started venturing out to Big B/Abhishek. then onto Aamir Khan and Hrithik, then finally Sallu. ETT and D3 have no doubt reached their full potential at the box office. Aditya had to drop his huge ego to comply with Sallu and Aamir…i guess money talks over everything else!

      • Except they signed SRK for CDI after the Bachchan’s/Saif turned out disasterous for them and then signed SRK for Rab Ne, one of their biggest hits ever and then signed him for JTHJ, and now Maneesh Sharma’s Fan and probably Aditya Chopra’s next as well! So much for ditching SRK

Also, as much as Aamir Khan claims he did this movie because of the script and because of his faith for the director in the movie; I just can’t believe that 100%. IMO, this is a calculated decision that he chose the biggest production house and one of the biggest movie franchise. It’s smart as hell. I guess in interviews he has to be politically correct or maybe he has convinced himself that D3 actually was a good movie, I don’t know. This guy is a genius though and am still looking forward to his next movie but I do hope he directs another movie soon. I think he is more talented behind the camera than in front. No doubt in my mind that he has ‘ghost’ directed some of his movies.

All this chori ilzaam against Aamir …can be held against any other top star. Plenty of instances too futile to repeat.

Accept it — Aamir has lifted a mediocre film to great fiscal success. Also to be congratulated, Katrina, Abhishek, other factors like three good song sequences, the emotional drama in second half — all prevailed despite the plot holes and lack of logic. Aam aadmi is watching the film more than once. It’s not a great film but it still an entertaining film for those who don’t look for negative points, but accept it as a fun film in the spirit of the season.

I am awaiting Aamir’s PK in June. Said to be a political satire; seems quirky, like any Raju Hirani film.

  100. The race to join the Rs 100 and Rs 200 crore club is getting bigger by the day. Words like blockbuster, record breaking collections, highest grossing film among others are being bandied about every weekend. Ahead of every mega-budget film release with an A-lister, is a question — Will this film make it to the Rs 100-crore club?
The varying figures given by trade analysts and production houses are only adding to the confusion, raising doubts about its authenticity. Krrish 3 is one such film that found itself in the centre of a storm recently, when reports alleged that the film’s box-office figures were inflated. The big question now is: How are these box-office numbers arrived at?

  101. Dhoom 3 Grosses 235 Crore Nett In 13 Days

    Thursday 2nd January 2014 11.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Dhoom 3 has now grossed 235 crore nett in thirteen days as it showed a good jump on New Years Day due to the holiday. The collections on Wednesday were around 10.50 crore nett.

The film is now the top grosser in all circuits except Mumbai. In Mumbai it has grossed around 70-71 crore nett with the 3 Idiots record at 79 crore nett. In Delhi/UP it will be the first film to go over 50 crore nett while in East Punjab it has already become the first film to cross 20 crore nett and will also breach the 25 crore nett mark in the long run. The previous best was 17 crore nett of Ek Tha Tiger.

The two week business of the Hindi version of the film will close at around 239 crore nett approx.

    • Dhoom 3 has hit it out of the park but overall my assessment would be the makers and Aamir/Abhishek to an extent have “escaped” from what could have been a poor result and in turn missed a glaring opportunity.

In the end the film will close shy of 300 crores, but this could have been and should have been a much better film with much better box office results.
The first week of 185crore all versions, should have been 200crore. The second week which will be close to 70crore could have been closer to 100crore. My own optimal prediction here would have been 375 crores. A few things did not work out in the film. The action was pretty much a bore throughout but mainly in the intro scenes. The Abhishek/Uday entry should have been a lighter tone one rather than them beating up some random dudes that went on for like 10 mins. Aamir’s entry scene was poorly edited and had too much slow motion.
Thinking about the film more, Katrina needn’t have been added as a love interest. If it kept to the story of sibling rivalry with Abhishek providing the provocation it would have done the trick. Katrina if anything could have played a sister to Samar/Sahir…may be one who was always sympathetic to Samar but one who also wanted revenge. One who consoled Samar when he got a mental thrashing from Sahir but one who still seeked revenge for fathers death. In the end, she turns good and turns Samar good only for the same ending to occur. Her acting as the link between pure evil and pure good would have been more poetic or filmi. The love angle seemed a little too much on the periphery of the film which was good, but the way Samar chooses death so easily makes the love angle far less appealing and important. Basically put, Katrina is hardly a character in the film and when she is she is not too bad.

But basically this one needed better directing and editing – this enough could have made the experience much better. Only 2 or 3 noteworthy actions sequences, trim 20mins and this one was a fine effort and opportunity as the script and back story was always quite interesting.

That its broken records is massive, as the distance is huge. In the end, against CE’s totals it will be some 50-80 crore ahead depending on trade or producer totals. It’s cleaned out the Krrish 3 total in a week! It’s murdered K3 in overseas. At the beginning of the year K3 and D3 were the two biggest films of the year. CE and YJHD sprung a big surprise but D3 has annihilated K3, literally taken apart the collections. K3’s in this sense are the most disappointing of most biggies. Considering KMG and Krrish being huge, this one ends up being the 3rd or 4th top grosser this year whereas those were the top of their years or topped by another Hrithik entertainer!
And more importantly, D3 has shown a film CAN collect big in the second week – it’s 65 crore total is 10 crore ahead of 3 Idiots, but more importantly, some 20 crore ahead of anything else. This itself after being 25% ahead of everything in the first week. To put into context, its second week is ahead of every films total collections after first week with the exception of 3 Idiots and YJHD. It’s miles ahead taking into account what it can still earn which should be another 20 crore at least. AND the holiday factor hardly mattered! So not only did it have xmas in the first week, it maxed out the collections with very little xmas effect! In essence, it was a true hype film that delivered and most if not everyone turned up whether holiday or not. Other films releasing at xmas just would not have had the same effect. They’d struggle on the working days and spike on the holidays, D3 specifically with its Monday/Tuesday/Thursday numbers from first week held up strongly. Other xmas releases (non aamir specifically) did not do this! In fact most films struggle to hang with 3 Idiots on the very first Monday itself. 3 Idiots’s weekday collections of 11crore-9crore between Monday to Thursday hardly ever get matched each day. Here D3 has not hung with 3 Idiots but if I am not mistaken it has probably beaten 3 Idiots on 12 out of 13 days so far. The trend now is unlikely to be ahead, but it’s the only film to hold up “this long” against those colossal numbers post opening weekend.

Indeed it’s not “trended” like an Aamir film, but that’s cos quite frankly the content is on the same level as CE or ETT. But its trended better than both these films and proved how overrated a lot of the 100 crore club has been. Its second week drop is just over 60% and its done this with its mammoth first week total. So smaller films that opened big (like all of salmans, srks, hrithiks and akshays massy or hyped films) did not trend as well as the biggest of all films – so much for a “saturated” or “maximum” market…in the same year one film stumbled to 200 crore (with decent trending, by some standards good trending!), D3 has shown a film can go to 300 crore or close with little fuss though not one with content issues. In essence, a very big film with content issues should be hitting 200 crore more often now (or should have been already)

In overseas, not much can be said except it will be ahead of anything by 40-50% when all set and done. Its kicked every record out of the window, except the UK where it has a shot still to be top all time grosser. The US numbers are the most remarkable and the US has behaved exactly like India in that the records tumbled in the first 10 days.

Aamir has made a poor choice and lessons should be learnt OR have some oversight over the product as this film is rather messy overall – I use the word escape as he has faced some wrath here and I think fairly in some quarters and unfairly in others. To think the guy should do “thinking” cinema all the time misses the point. Think some have commented but basically Aamir’s choices have been a mix of commercial and then critical/commercial since 2001. Not everything will work as DCH (box office wise), MP, Talaash have shown. But he is a safe bet and has no Guzzarish or Ra.One to his name in this time. His films still make the most but clearly D3 proves he’d make a better filmmaker as I doubt he has seen this film till the last minute. I might be wrong too, if so he is lucky this time. Like Sachin played a crucial 80 odd against Pakistan in 2011 WC, he was damn lucky as he could have got caught 4 times! I feel similarly here. This film lacked the so called “Aamir” touch. It definitely missed something and I don’t mean it had to be appreciated like a Lagaan but it just felt plain silly at times. It’s like Ishq or Raja Hindustani where some things were terribly flat. I’d bet the Ghajini director could have made something more meaningful here. But in essence a commercial actor needs the odd mindless half tracker that goes big as it helps build the audience up for the most risky or critical ventures. Aamir has done this with films like RH, Ishq, Fanaa, Ghajini and now D3. It’s a mere set up for the major innings to come like Lagaan, DCH, RDB, TZP or 3 Idiots. With P.K round the corner, he already has a big commercial success and the eyeballs onto P.K increase further.

Abhishek should avoid another Dhoom as simply put this franchise is not being built in the correct way and is dishonest in giving him a fair crack at a story which revolves around him more. This film would have benefited more if had Abhishek in some better scenes early on. Maybe some scenes reviewing the evidence of the case before he lands in the US. Whatever, it seemed they wanted a Salman type entrance but Abhishek deserved a bit more of a story or backdrop then some mindless bashing up.

The winners are YRF as they have most likely started a new club – the 500 crore global club card (not confirmed but looking likely)…and its main member is yet again Aamir Khan who started the 100 and 200 crore local club cards and the 400 crore global club cards. Everyone else, is simply still playing catch up! When they catch up – an Aamir film goes ahead again and unfortunately he maybe has saved the best for last in P.K. One can simply hope in great confidence, Hirani will deliver yet again. So far it is 3 on 3 for him and arguably all 3 of his films would be in most top 10/20 lists from the 00’s.

And of course the biggest winner … HRITHIK ROSHAN! That invisible man has done it again! Jokes aside though…he did well in D2 adding about 15% to Krrish’s collections in 2006…unfortunately adding Aamir just gives you a lot more %’s. in fact to be precise, if D3 ends at 275 crore, the factor is 50%!

Finally – a lot of films get plaudits when they open to 65 crore first week and trod along to 100 crore. D3 could be doing this too from 2nd week onwards!

      • I doubt if anyone similarly dissected Coolie or Mard or Aaj Ka Arjun. People just accepted their success, in fact expected that success because of Amitabh. IMO, Aamir Khan has entered that ‘Coolie’ zone, wherein, content does not matter to the paying public, but just the opportunity to watch a figure in entertaining action. The keyword is ‘entertaining action’. One may ask, ‘what about Talaash?”. Off course, Amitabh too similarly tried some sensible stuff (Bemisaal, Shakti, Silsila) and the results just made him choose more nonsense until his mainstream retirement. Perhaps a Talaash has fared better than Shakti/Silsila. Hopefully, it shows that there will be enough paying public to bolster the sensible stuff from Aamir.

Until D3, it seemed as if Sallu had snagged the BigB ‘nonsense masala’ crown. Now perhaps, until Sallu can outdo D3 (or even 3I!), he just occupies the Dharam spot on the pedestal.

Congrats to d3 for becoming the biggest grosser (as expected) & K3 for being-the second biggest all time

Year 2013 was super exciting for Bollywood as it saw some of the biggest releases making never heard before Box Office records. Where SRK’s Chennai Express finally managed to break the record of 3 Idiots by collecting Rs. 227.13 cr, Krrish 3 pushed the envelope further in following few weeks and made newer BO record by collecting Rs. 244.92 cr. This again was broken by Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 which has already collected Rs. 252.7 cr in record time and is still running successfully in the theatres.

On the other hand, younger stars too weren’t far behind. Ranbir Kapoor scored a massive total of Rs. 188.57 cr with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, while Deepika-Ranveer starrer Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela too followed with Rs. 116.33 cr.

Farhan Akhtar’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag made it into the 100 crore club and so did Ritesh-Aftab and Vivek starrer Grand Masti.

  110. New BOX OFFICE INDIA Coming Soon

    Thursday 2nd January 2012 10.30 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

There will be a new Box Office India website going live in the next 7-14 days. Hopefully the transfer will happen sometime next week. The whole process will take 12-36 hours for the website to be available to all IP addresses across the world so some IP addresses may witness the website being down for a few hours.

We really appreciate the support and following over the last couple of years although many sections were not being updated. Despite this the followers still increased with a record 10 lakh page views hit on the day of Chennai Express’s release which led to our servers crashing. We expected to transfer with the release of Dhoom 3 due to the craze but there could have been similar problems so the transfer was postponed to after the New Year.

Over the last few years the data may have not been updated live but was still being recorded in our database. This database will now go live for the first time and as each figure and verdict is entered just once there will be no discrepancies which are there on the present site. Eg a figure of 10.2 crore somewhere and 11.1 crore elsewhere and average somewhere and flop elsewhere. This is due to everything done manually so some places are updated and others not. Also with the internet there are so many places where things are copied even when some figures are miscalculated they are still copied so you leave it as it is as we did not want our real database copied until we got the website structure as we wanted. Although there is limited replies from our side we do really appreciate the feedback and it is noted be it about the errors an emissions on the website or about links to where our charts are copied. We really appreciate this and hope it will continue..

We know the data is authentic on the website as will most of the major players within in the industry and now there will be a website that we are really proud off. It is now the final piece of the jigsaw and the website as we wanted. It has been a two year process simply due to the amount of data that had to be uploaded and shown in a user friendly way. Also with so many films and artists to be added it is time consuming and as these are added by third parties there can be errors and emissions. The data is complete since 2002 with every film release being tracked while there are some films from 2000-2001 period left which will continued to be updated and then whatever we have sourced for the years prior to 2000. There will be a couple of section sections in the website which will go live in a couple of months which includes an analytic section which allows for graphical comparison of box office details of films and artists. An app will hopefully be complete around summer time.

There will a normal website and a subscribed website. The normal website will have the normal box office reports, news and data. Then there will be a subscribed website for the box office aficionados which gives access to our box office database which has every box office number that there can be. This will be monthly or yearly. The subscribed website has been keen kept as simple as possible with nothing hidden and a normal surfer will be able to surf and see exactly what data is on the website and for which films so can subscribe if he/she desires

The website itself now will match the authenticity of the numbers or at least we hope it will match and also hope people across the world continue to support like they have been over the years.

    • I am not sure how many people would pay for BO information.

      • agree! plus there’s still a pretense here that all the numbers are really available and it’s only a question of accessing these ‘secret’ figures. But this contradicts the essential claim. if the numbers are so transparent and obvious why aren’t these out there and publicly available?! One can accept that to really get into the weeds one should have to pay as this info cannot be made available in more popular outlets but this ought not to be the case for the overall gross number. The trade journals publish the individual centers as you rightly mentioned earlier but they’re still never complete. One can arrive at certain plausible scenarios but this is still not the same as having numbers not open to debate. And then even beyond this one needs an impartial interpretation of the figures that are available. For instance there’s no point in saying that y film did more than x film in Kanpur if in the meantime Kanpur added a couple of multiplexes! At this end as you know they account for trending, competition, comparable weekend numbers in earlier years, the history of the franchise (where applicable), the increase in gross because of 3D/IMAX screens, production/distribution costs etc. Everything in this food chain is completely verifiable. Until we get to this sort of scenario everyone can keep pretending they have authentic numbers and/or offer pronouncements on films but these will always be ‘accidentally’ true at best.

This gets to a larger ‘Indian’ problem though (not only Indian) where we tend to think it’s really about not actually changing our mindset in a certain matter and simply introducing cosmetic changes. The cake doesn’t taste better if it is only made to look prettier than before! Yes a cheesy analogy!
