      • True. I haven’t seen Stalin, but before watching this trailer I had assumed this to be Salman’s Mahesh Babu like Sainakudu moment. But this looks far less ‘serious’.

And Tabu decides to choose this as her comeback vehicle.! Apart from a fat paycheck, the only reason I can think of her signing this is her supposed friendship with Salman from Jeet and HSSH days.

        The silent Khan
Filed under: Exclusive! — 3 Comments
        June 20, 2013

aamir Khan silentI have never seen anybody who is as fiercely private as Aamir Khan. This Khan is known to talk less and contemplate more. He plans his moves so methodically and clinically that it hardly leaves room for an error.

If you look at the three Khans closely, you will find that all of them are radically different people.

Salman Khan will bare his heart if he is in the mood, otherwise he just clams up. Shah Rukh Khan will divert all your attention to some other topic if he does not want to answer your question. Aamir Khan, on the other hand, is made up of a different material.

Aamir will neither try to deflect your question nor bare his heart to you. He’s known to give politically correct answers and will usually pause to think for a few seconds before answering a ‘difficult’ question. Among the three Khans, Aamir is calculative to a fault.

Some critics disagree when it is said that Aamir is a better actor than Shah Rukh or Salman but all agree that he is a marketing genius. When it comes to marketing his films, Aamir has a certain knack which the other two clearly lack.

Among film distributors, Aamir is known to be a master when it comes to building up a curiosity for his upcoming film. He usually chairs all his marketing meetings and comes up with his own ideas. In most cases, the marketing teams willfully let Aamir take the call when it comes to marketing his films.

On the other hand, Shah Rukh’s marketing meetings are mostly led by his own staff who are seasoned professionals. They usually consult Shah Rukh after formulating all the ideas and plans. Sometimes Shah Rukh vets those plans while in most other cases, he is happy to just play his part.

Salman Khan usually steers clear of these meetings and hates to attend them unless somebody from his inner circle forces him to take part.

Calculative, measured, shrewd and a genius are some of the adjectives that are usually tagged with Aamir. This Khan has got an impeccable record of breaking box office records with films that are considered landmarks in the history of Indian cinema. Aamir is the only actor known to have cracked the formula with the masses as well as the classes.

Before we move on, here’s a video clip of a college-going Aamir Khan pleading with auto-rickshaw drivers in Bandra to let him stick the poster of his first film on their vehicles. Yes, that’s how he slogged to market his first film!

The Khan whose silence speaks louder than his words

Fiercely guarded about his private life, these days he has become more private than ever. People close to him say that Aamir has become even more contemplative. A family man, ask anybody close to him and they’ll tell you that, no matter what the nature of his work, he will drop everything and be at his family’s beck and call.

It is this side of Aamir Khan that has had him to endure the maximum pain. There was a time when he had become the punching bag of the media because of his troubled relationship with his father, film producer Tahir Hussain.

That Aamir chooses to fight silently in the face of a difficult situation became his bane as he was portrayed to be a monster by a section his family members which included his father. In the end, Aamir emerged victorious as silently as he endured the pain.

In this series, we will talk about the days when a ‘silent’ Aamir was flogged almost everyday in the press and the day he couldn’t remain silent anymore. But before that, here’s a funny anecdote just to lead you to the topic.

When Jiah Khan was called Aamir Khan’s step-sister!

We all know that Aamir and Jiah Khan starred together in a film called Ghajini which catapulted her to stardom. Ghajini is the break that Jiah Khan was waiting for all her life and no matter how small her role is in the film, Jiah was noticed and appreciated. It opened up a lot of doors for her. Post Ghajini, Jiah Khan was a star and was invited to perform on stage at award functions.

Here’s a video of Jiah Khan performing at an award function. I feel she was truly a talent whom Bollywood refused to recognise in her last days.

Okay. Now we will get back to the funny anecdote. It was during the promotion of Ghajini that a section of the press stumbled upon a ‘fact’ that became grist for gossip – that Jiah Khan’s mother is a yesteryear’s actress called Rabiya Amin (that was Rabiya’s maiden name). It triggered off another set of rumours – that Jiah Khan is actually Aamir Khan’s step-sister! The story came out at a time when Ghajini promotions were at its peak. Now, how on earth did the press relate Aamir Khan to Jiah Khan? Well, there was something more than just the similar sounding surnames.

It was rumoured that Aamir’s father, Tahir Hussain was once in a relationship with Rabiya. He even produced a film, Dulha Bikta Hai (1982) with her starring in it. A section of the press wrote that Jiah is the long-lost daughter of Tahir Hussain! They even went on to compare the similarity between the facial features of Aamir and Jiah Khan! Don’t laugh now, it really happened!

When the rumours surfaced, a shocked Jiah Khan told clarified that her father is an American. She also said that though she doesn’t have too much information on her father but she’s sure about the fact that the person who fathered her is not definitely Tahir Hussain. A few days later, Aamir’s father clarified that he was never married to Rabiya, and that Jiah is not his daughter.

The scandal that threatened to assume the gigantic proportions, soon fizzled out.

However, this was not the first time that Aamir suddenly found himself in the middle of a huge controversy in the media because of his father. In fact, the above incident is nothing if you consider Tahir’s earlier bush with controversies that scalded his actor son.

In the earlier post, I was telling you the story of how Aamir Khan’s younger brother Faisal Khan went missing and then traced at a farmhouse near Khandala two days later.

After he was found, the police took Faisal under their protective custody and later produced him at the court. Interestingly, both Tahir Hussin and Aamir Khan filed separate court applications seeking Faisal’s custody.

While Aamir Khan said in his custody application that Faisal is suffering from Schizophrenia induced fear-psychosis, his father on the contrary, claimed that Faisal is okay and just suffering from depression.

The court admitted both the applications and decided to wait for the medical report from JJ Hospital on Faisal’s mental health. In the meantime, the court recorded Faisal’s statement and there he went all out against his elder brother. Faisal told the court that he wanted to live with his father.

The court decided to wait for the medical report from JJ Hospital first and barred both Aamir and Tahir from visiting him. Only a close friend had visitation rights.

Aamir at Bandra Metropolitan Court on October 30, 2007

The medical report from JJ Hospital finally arrived and it said that Faisal indeed suffers from Schizophrenia and needs to be under constant care and attention. But while deciding who he will stay with, the court decided to rely more on Faisal’s statement. The court also ignored the point in Aamir’s application that his father was financially incapable to take care of his brother.

Aamir made a much publicised courtroom appearance with his body-guards when he was fighting the case against his father while seeking Faisal’s custody. Here is a picture (left).

This was the tipping point of the controversy because Tahir and Faisal kept on repeating in front of the media that Aamir was trying to arm-twist Faisal into living with him. A section of the media continued to carry Faisal and Tahir’s statements attacking his brother.

Aamir finally lost the custody of Faisal to his father, and it was just after this, Aamir’s family and extended family members issued a strong statement against Tahir rubbishing all the claims made by him against his son.

The statement was signed by 22 members of the Khan family and their relatives, which included his mother Zeenat, sister Nikhat, Mansoor Khan, ex-wife Reena, his wife Kiran, sister Nikhat and his bhanja Imran Khan.

Aamir’s statement against his dad has been uploaded on a separate page, to read it, just click on the word, statement.

This is the only time, Aamir went all out against his father. A section of the press had a field day reporting on the incident and some didn’t show restraint despite the fact that a sick person was getting affected by it.

However, even as Faisal walked out with his father, the problem was far from over.

Over the next year, Faisal was repeatedly brought in front of the TV cameras to talk about Aamir Khan. Here is one such video where Faisal attacks his brother brazenly. With nobody restraining him, he did it umpteenth number of times during that period.

This video will also prove that despite Faisal failing to bring forth any proper allegation against his elder brother and court accepting the fact that he is not well, a section of the media tried flogging the issue to make it into a controversy.

What’s more sad is that a section of the media was making a sick person give in to his fear psychosis knowing fully well that he is very vulnerable.

          Aamir Khan’s apprehensions come true

As Aamir had hinted in his court application, Tahir submitted another application at the Metropolitan Magistrate’s court saying that he wants to withdraw the custody application of Faisal. Tahir said that he has not been able to get in touch with his son for over 15 days (during the court’s custody period of a month). After a month, Faisal was supposed to get a check-up done again at the JJ Hospital to determine his mental health.

After Tahir filed the application, the press finally started showing some restraint in reporting the developments as by then everybody had got the idea that Faisal needs to be taken care of . A lot of senior members of the press realised that what Aamir was genuinely concerned about his brother.

However, Faisal again refused to go with his star brother and filed another application in the court saying that he wants to stay on his own. The court again granted him the permission and Faisal went to stay at a rented apartment at Tilak Nagar in Chembur.

Though the mainstream media by then had started to withdraw from reporting about Faisal, he continued to give out statements alleging that he is normal and his brother is trying to subdue him. But by then those statements had become less frequent.

About six months later, it was reported that Aamir was trying to reach out to his brother again. Faisal was living in Bandra East at that time and he too had realised that he needs Aamir back in his life.

          Faisal returns home

Aamir and Faisal finally reconciled as the latter was spotted dropping onto the sets of 3 Idiots to check on his brother often. They appeared to be cordial with each other. It was already 2009 and towards the end of that year, Faisal moved back to Bella Vista, Aamir’s second flat in Bandra West.

The following year, Tahir Hussain passed away on February 2, after suffering a massive heart attack.

It is now learnt from common friends that a month before his death, Tahir had longed to be with Aamir’s mother and his sons. He divorced his first wife and came back to the same Bella Vista apartment.

Just before his father passed away, it was one happy reunion of the Khan family.

In the end, like our Bollywood films, it was a happy ending.

We are told that Faisal is happy under his brother’s care. He continues living at Bella Vista and understands that he needs to be taken care of. He lives a very quiet life.

Before we go, here’s a video for all Aamir Khan fans. Here’s Aamir Khan receiving his first Filmfare award for the most ‘sensational debut’. • Well, having followed Aamir through the media, past decade or so, I am aware of most of what has been shared by Rockstar. However, there seems to be a small mistake in these lines — ‘It is now learnt from common friends that a month before his death, Tahir had longed to be with Aamir’s mother and his sons. He divorced his first wife and came back to the same Bella Vista apartment.’

Aamir’s mother Zeenat is the first wife, from whatever i have understood. Tahir Hussain married another lady some years back and had a son Hyder– who even attempted to get into films. Apparently Aamir wasn’t too happy with his father’s action (taking a second wife), while Faisal seems to have accepted it. Before his death, Tahir returned to his primary family — Zeenat and children ( 2 sons and 2 daughters). He died when Aamir & wife Kiran were away at the Berlin film fest, i think Jan 2010. Aamir rushed back to Mumbai.

160-180cr if it isn’t up the mark. Comfortably over 200cr if it is liked. That’s probably going to be Salman benchmark for this year.

    • Ironically Jai Ho is likely to be much better than most of Salman’s stuff in recent years. It wasn’t the greatest masala example for the South but it was more substantial than most of the stuff Salman does. However it might not do as well because it’s not masala-comedy which is what Salman specializes in. If you’re not going down this route you need something like Ghajini, where the narrative is much stronger. Unfortunately Stalin wasn’t this either. Will be interesting to see how well this does in Hindi multiplexes because so far the ‘compact’ with masala has been in the comedy format. The audience ‘consumes’ masala as enjoyable far but hasn’t shown much of a willingness to really confront the edgier varieties. Ghajini was the more substantial such attempt but here Aamir’s prestige was a big part of the deal. Some years prior to this the very dark Khakee did well enough but underperformed in key multiplex markets, relative to the scale and cast of the production. All things considered it would be good if Jai Ho worked.

  23. I like Salman doing what he does best whether or not he should do a dramatic piece ala Devgan or Amir . At least we get to see some new moves even if the the music sounds the same. But what do I know..dont ask me 🙂

And yet we don’t care because we prize our movie stars precisely for their expediently ‘apolitical’ personas. Salman Khan is all the more beloved because he will never make the mistake of talking about Indian Muslims or Pakistan or racial profiling a la Shah Rukh Khan. We will forgive all the dead black bucks and pavement dwellers, the many stories of physical violence, as long as Sallu Bhai stays ekdum chup about the P-word.

  25. @ rockstar — ‘and by maligning the image of father concerned aamir’s womaniser image as young actor was more

his father won the custodial battle of faisal in court and put this under cover and died just after that’

As i said, I’ve followed Aamir thru’ media a fair bit — and from whatever I’ve read I never saw Aamir maligning his father or any family member. The father and son may have had the same defect — womanizing, as you put it– but Aamir apparently took his father’s second marriage badly,to heart, feeling protective about his mom; Faisal probably forgave the father. Mid-day had written quite a bit about all this and other aamir related stuff over the years. I visit that site often, so i’ve read. Even used to occasionally buy it some years back.

Aamir had seen his father go thru’ financial tough times ( thru’ 8 years) when Rekha stalled his film (I think Loafer or some such L name). He lost money, a lot — and Aamir has said that the brothers even went to school with old uniforms lengthened (People magazine, a few years back). Mansoor Khan went off to Ooty and eco-farming, after the govt took away some of his land — and that is why he supported Narmada Bacho Andolan–he has said it in mid-day; it’s there on the net, 2006, when Aamir got into trouble with Modi for supporting NBA agitation.

It was Aamir’s careful handling of money and films that got the Husains in Mumbai back financially — and the father announces four films productions, late nineties, probable money disasters. Aamir then , first and only time, publicly dissociated himself with his father’s money transcations, loans, assurances, all that.

Faisal had two chances to make good in films– one film earlier to Mela and the Mela– which probably made a bit more money than the first film debut. But both flopped, maybe deservedly. Aamir is said to have put in money into his brother’s debut film. He is also said to have tried to help his brother out in business, various times .

It’s easy to criticize somebody who takes harsh decisions for good reasons. I can’t help feeling that Aamir is one such person who does what’s necessary, even if it makes him unpopular.

rishi kapoor the elite dynasty played once a siddle fiddle to an unknown from same family in same production …aamir khan claimed that he is not a part of his father’s financial deals. This was just a year after the release of Lagaan in trade journals with whom he was introduced in bollywood and was made”aamir khan” first in yaadon ki barat and qsqt

      http://historiestuff.blogspot.in/2011/12/aamir-khan.html

e made his debut in Ketan Mehta’s Holi in 1984. The film also had Ashutosh Gowariker as part of its cast, who was a friend of Aamir and later went on to direct the award winning Lagaan. But it was in 1988, with the release of Mansoor Khan’s Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, loosely adapted from Romeo and Juliet, which brought Aamir into the limelight. The film was a big favourite among film-goers and Aamir won the Filmfare Best Debut Actor Award. He received several nominations for the Filmfare Best Actor Award until he finally nailed it in 1996. In 1989, he had two releases. Raakh was a non-commercial film and his performance as Aamir Hussein was recognized. The second film was Love, Love, Love another teen love story with Juhi Chawla.
