  1. Jai Ho Advance: Single Screens Phenomenal Overall Good
    Thursday 23 January 2014 09.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jai Ho has had a good advance with single screens phenomenal. There are some single single theatres in places like Jodhpur, Lucknow, Indore etc which have a 25-30% better advance than Dhoom 3 or Chennai Express. The Salman factor together with action has been working like magic at single screens since Wanted in 2009 and its no different with Jai Ho.

In the UP, Rajasthan and CI belts, single screens have probably seen the best advance ever but there is a lag at multiplexes in places like Delhi, Punjab, Bangalore and Kolkata compared to the advance of other recent big openers.

Still the advance overall is good but less than Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger and at multiplexes it is less than Bodyguard also. The film has a near perfect release with most multiplexes outside South allotting most of their screens to the film as the holdovers have either run out of steam or were not doing well anyway.

But, BMS clearly indicates shocker , i think with Jai Ho Sallu is back to Wanted and pre wanted phase.
If multiplexes dont pick up after average opening, below 20 cr first day will shock the industry.
All in all, Salman movie has never seen such low response in multiplex since wanted. I think only ‘Ready’ was other sallu star which was little slow in morning but picked up quickly to trend very well. But Jai ho is much below Ready, can this pick up like ready to trend excellent? Now, all depends on reviews and wom.

Jai Ho Below Expectations At Multiplexes
        Friday 24 January 2014 15.30 IST
        Box Office India Trade Network

Jai Ha is remaining below expectations at multiplexes practically all over the country. The opening was not that strong at multiplexes in the morning and in the afternoon the film has seen collections at a similar level and even less at places.

The single screens are doing well but the sort of numbers expected from Jai Ho can’t come from just single screen doing good business, the multiplexes must do well as well.

The collections in Delhi city and East Punjab are pretty shocking considering the numbers the last few Salman Khan starrer’s have put up in these areas. Ek Tha Tiger saw record business while Dabangg was much closer to 3 Idiots in these areas than Mumbai. At the moment a 20 crore nett total is looking a tough ask for Jai Ho. It is almost certain to have lower first day figures than Bodyguard and Dabangg 2.

  6. Jai Ho Has Good Opening But Not Bumper
    Friday 24 January 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jai Ha had a good opening with single screensdoing very well ranging from 80-100% while multiplexes opened in the 50% range but while the opening is good the expectations were of a much better opening. The business at multiplexes across North India was disappointing as some were even less than 50%.

Mumbai circuit has opened better than North India with Ahmedabad recording 90% collections and Pune also around 80-90% but North looks set to be below expectations as Delhi NCR and East Punjab had average start.

Overall the opening is good but not huge. The first day number should be good but probably not what a Salman Khan starrer should be doing today. It has no chance of reaching Ek Tha Tiger levels and the question is can it go over 20 crore nett or not. A lot depends how multiplexes fare through the day as business in single screens in most parts is very good.

  7. Shah Rukh’s injury not ‘OK’, shooting cancelled on FridayBy Subhash K. Jha, Jan 24, 2014 – 10:45 hrs IST

Shah Rukh Khan’s injury which his…ahem…colleague Salman Khan has described as “ok” is not so okay. According to an eyewitness Shah Rukh was not just injured but also badly shaken by the accident.

Says the eyewitness, “Shah Rukh was shooting with Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Deepika Padukone for Farah Khan’s Happy New Year when a heavy 10×5 door came crashing down straight towards Shah Rukh. He ducked. But couldn’t escape entirely though. He had bleeding gash on the right side of his forehead. His knee was also injured.”

Worst of all, Shah Rukh’s shoulder which has undergone several surgeries took the weight of the falling door.

Says the eyewitness, “Shah Rukh was in a lot of pain. He is also become frail because of the repeated injuries and surgeries. The entire team went to the hospital with him. They were there for more than 4 hours. Thorough tests including CT scan and an MRI scan were done.”

    The test reports are awaited.

In the meanwhile Shah Rukh insisted on returning to shoot after the hospitalization.

Says the eyewitness, “Shah Rukh and the entire team went back to shoot at the Marriott. Shah Rukh had his hand in a sling. He took of his sling and did his shots. But he was quite shaken. The shooting has been cancelled on Friday to allow Shah Rukh to rest.”

Though this will pick up over the weekend with wom better than the rest, it seems a clear case of over exposure on tv and news and then partial over confidence on salman part with assembling all the left over cast and general bhaigiri in filmaking and then not having an a-grade heroine. Salman may be ruling the roost but it’s the package deal which seems to be working these days.

The storyline may be good to decent but the promos except the posters always looked dated and recycled garbage like dabangg2 .

This also was a summer movie and salman should have waited for april/may dates. Though I am not a die hard aamir fan you need to adopt his saam, daam, dand, bhed philosophy at times.

Salman has made a big mistake here & by following that up by giving very reckless interviews ( barkha atc ). He seems to have done a lot of damage ( at least in the short run ) to his image.

  15. Jai Ho Finds It Tough On Day One
    Friday 24 January 2014 22.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jai Ha has found it tough at the box office on day one. The multiplexes did not start that strongly and could not pick up while single screens started very well but at places there were cracks in the matinee and evening shows. It is cold in the North but still it should have collected much more.

It was pretty clear in the afternoon that 20 crore nett was a huge task and as the day comes to an end the collections for the film will be around the 15 crore nett range.

The film has suffered in the multiplexes with the lowest collections of a Salman Khan starrer since Wanted in 2009. The all India collections of films like Dabangg (2010) and Ready (2011) may remain lower when the final all India total of Jai Ho comes in but at multiplexes they recorded better collections. The film has been sold for huge prices in circuits where it has been sold and figures coming in from these circuits be it Rajasthan, West Bengal or CP Berar are not proportionate to the prices that distributors have paid.

Shocking! Salman Khan’s JAI HO doesn’t take a flying start in multiplexes. Opening in single-screen cinemas lovely but not in multiplexes.

      Like

    • The multiplexes once again prove that anything that looks half-serious becomes problematic for them. As long as Salman was doing the masala-comedy routine he was fine. Even with ETT this was a rather multiplex-friendly deal. Yashraj, Katrina etc. The moment you try to go more hardcore the results are clear. I don’t really buy the fact that this film didn’t look great and so on. As opposed to what? BG, ready?!

Once again people should have reason to appreciate Aamir’s feat in Ghajini. No other serious masala film (or serious drama) has done anything even remotely close to this film’s business in terms of opening and final gross.

      Like

      • I think this is also a case of masala fatigue. It was visible even during Dabang 2 and all subsequent masala movies like Boss etc..There is only so much of the same anyone can take. I am not too surprised the movie didnt start well, it also looked stale if you compare it with other biggies. The songs were bad, the heroine looked like some Junior casting couch actress and it had that 80’s look and feel..
I am not too disappointed, I will never be, specially if a movie of Salman or Akshay doesnt do well. What is sad is atleast this salman movie content wise was better than his recent outings but still it has flopped. With Kick on the anvil I expect another big dud. His real biggie would be the Barjatya one. On Akshay he has Thupakki coming so even with my obvious hatred for this south kind masala movies, I will be happy if that one does well as that is a genuinely good movie.

        Like

    • Second day bookings are not no different either. Also, single screen always fall on Saturday. Expect similar or lower number on sat unless multiplex improve significantly.
This is nothing but exhaustion of Massy movies. BOSS, Besharam, R…rajkumar also not great…Jai ho confirms it.

      Like

      • Besharam isn’t masala by any stretch. And you can’t compare Shahid with Salman in his current phase though R..rajkumar remained stable at the lower end. Didn’t do too badly. It just lacked an initial. Again Akshay is more or less a spent force at this point. Not likely to get big openings on anything. The best he can do on a good day is get a 120 crore or so final result. Masala-comedy is the key, something I’ve been saying for very long. Rohit Shetty profits from this every time. Hard to believe there’s any exhaustion here. Of course anytime you have too many similar films the novelty runs out and you get a number of failures too. But Salman is big enough at the moment for the genre not to be a crippling factor for him. But even with him this trajectory couldn’t have lasted forever. The lack of relative quality eventually starts showing. And even now most of his releases (barring the Barjatya project) seem to be utterly indifferent ones simply playing the same note again and again. Think it will be hard for him to get those stratospheric numbers in the absence of a proper project. Maybe with Kick because this is a remake. I haven’t seen the original but maybe this gets it done. The Stalin remake was always dicey.

        Like

    • This is not just end of road for Mass masala cinema. It indicates clear flop for salman. BOI says 15 cr first day at best, sat will be lower as SS was the best thing about it. 50 cr weekend at best and 80-90 cr total the way underperforming movies trend these days, which makes it clean flop.
Last year, dabangg2 didnt trend very well, it was not well accepted no where close to first Dabangg.
And probably that was end of road for masala movies.
Looks like Only one of Srk or salman can do well at a time. Though, aamir maintains exclusivity with one film in 2 year.

      • yes this looks to be Salman’s first serious underperformer since Dabanng. Some other films fizzled out fast (ETT is the classic example here) but they at least started very big and got to a minimal gross because of it. 22. Bollywood box-office roundup -male actors

Just like my take on the oscar nominations 2014, this is somewhat of an unbiased summarising roundup for people who want to see beyond the noise and the spin. Here are the stocks of the main male actors as I see them now—

The BIGGEST Losers –the ‘peeing club’

When we saw a tweet pic released (aptly by aamir himself!) of aamir pissing way to glory with Salman, it was somewhat more than symbolic

    Loser 1

Salman khan –have never considered /acknowledged him ever as actor or star pre-dabang. Jai hos shameful fate is not a surprise at all. Salmans career is far from over but the orgasmic unnatural ‘turbo boost’ he has been enjoying lately will come under a leash somewhat (kick will do well though but not a record breaker)

    Loser 2

    Aamir khan

Now this is where the boys are separated from men! Most will consider him to be a big winner given dhoom3’s grossing above krrish3 & CE. But but..

    Hang on..

    a) Aamirs appeal and core audience got antagonised here
    b) he was seen increasingly as a ‘sell out’ and just like his peeing antic with Salman, his ‘pseudo intellectualism’ came out into the open
    But above all

    C) it broke the MYTH of Aamirs trending appeal (following talaash percolating into dhoom3

    d) so emphatic was this verdict

That dhoom3 that got close to 250 crores in its first week
Couldn’t muster just 100 crores in the remaining entire run
    Heck not even 50 crores

Which to me wasn’t shocking ..,

But besides ripping apart Aamirs credibility,

For all times to come–it has stripped those who pedalled limitless trending and so on..

This signalled the literal DEATH of TRENDING (& it’s proponents got a big shock!)

Unsurprisingly, after dhoom3, aamir has again gone into an unnatural break pushing /delaying PK –for no major reason

He comes across as a student who keeps dropping year(s) to mug up, sitting at home, avoiding failure and getting a bump in his marks…

    So in one stroke
The guy (Salman) who could make any film run just by his presence

And the guy who was the trending/discretion king got cut to size

No wonder the two were caught peeing (away their strengths…)–

Box office is truly a great leveller

  23. Box office round up –male actors –vol 2

    1) Hritik Roshan
Now I’m not a v big hritk Roshan fan in a way the aamir or abhishrek or even srk fans operate here.
But I do see and appreciate something good

Carrying a proven franchise dhoom3 (which was a well rounded and supported product in all ways) is much easier

But in krrish3. , the film was good only in certain junctures, the cast/songs/ sensibility left much to desire

Besides the personal and health problems he faced all added up

In a similar juncture, aamir disappeared for years from the scene, went into a nervous breakdown and came back with a underpoerfomaing mangal pande,

But the way hritk has responded to this by his one-man show in k3 and in real life –he’s the winner no 1.

    2) SRK
this guy was written off after subpar JTHJ, don2 etc (though even his ‘flops’ were 100+)
And unarguably he was on a decline in more ways than one…

With CE, srk has stemmed the tide
Though greatly aided by rohit shetty and deepika —
Srk is back in the reckoning

Though he is no longer what he used to be (& will never be the same again!) his remnant box office appeal worldwide is more than many current biggies

It’s no wonder that he has been the undisputed king for so long

In my book, srk is the biggest khan all things considered …

    XXXXXX

    Some ‘RELATIVE’ winners

    1) ranbir kapoor –inspite of besharam he has come here to stay. By Yjhd he got his biggest grosser and is clinching a space somewhat like Leonardo dicaprio of Bollywood
He is here for the long haul and has a bright future ahead

    2) ranveer Singh
Have liked his presence and energy, didn’t like him much in raam leela, was better in lootere
His latest with PC is alright but nothing great
But when I watched the promo of gun day today, it reconfirmed what I’ve felt–
Jus saw a two second promo of him running..
After hritk and ranbir –he is the one to watch-his best it yet to come

Dhoom 3 made close to 250 in first two weeks (which was v good but not that unexpected!) but it’s the post 2 weeks phase, that folks here are trying to hide
Heck the gold standard BOI even stopped releasing figures after that (when inflating them didn’t work!)

This does not include pseudo-stars/’star surnames’…

Those like akshay Kumar and ajay devgun will continue to do well in the right project but they will never be the topmost stars (just like their entire careers!)

      TO ADD—

A new entrant in my list–

Saw few minutes of a movie callled ‘shudh desi romance’

May complete it later –parineeti was her usual chirpy and irritating self and the other gal-I didn’t register her…

As usual –I predict early & clear

Saw a few scenes of a guy ….I’ve forgotten his name

But what I do remember is that he has a v good future if he handles himself well..

He can be a poor mans (as of now) mix of hritik and ranbir…

–I suspect he should get some good projects now..has he got any new films.

      May complete this film soon

And by the way–what’s this guys name …

Sensing zero public support in Maharashtra, Samajwadi Party call off its stir against Salman Khan’s film

Maharashtra unit of Samajwadi Party (SP) which has threatened to disrupt the screening of Salman Khan’s film ‘Jai Ho’ on Thursday, decided to call if off its stir on Friday after receiving no support from even within the party. Party’s move was hugely criticised in social media.

Jai Ho was released peacefully in Maharashtra Friday.

However, the party attributes the change of heart to the “republic day & law order” situation. In a press release on Friday, Zulfikar Azmi, the secretary of state unit of SP, who has shot off a letter to Salman Khan insisting an apology over Khan’s alleged clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, states that the party has decided not to disrupt the screening owing to ‘law and order” situation especially ahead of Republic Day.

An office bearer also claimed that they decided to do away with the stir as Chief Minister personally called them up to reconsider the move.

Zulfikar Azmi’s letter states that the minorities are still angry with Khan due to his clean chit to Modi and party has called of its stir hoping that Salman would respect the public sentiments and apologise to them. Congress has earlier trashed out the Azmi’s move calling him as “galli-ka-neta” and his gimmick-an unsuccessful exercise to retain the sliding minority vote bank.

Interestingly, his office email mentions that stir is being called off due to Independence day.

Again, this shows that the irresponsible BO numbers and projections are just that- irresponsible. This was never going to be a D3 just like D3 was never going to gross 300-350 crores.

    • I don’t really agree there Apex. Truly spectacular box office results can be achieved only on 3 or 4 occasions in a year by big stars and properly packaged product releasing at the right time. This is the time when family / masses and generally everyone turn up. Salman blundered in choosing this date as this weekend hardly has any meat and here republic day too falls on a Sunday. Exams are round the corner where parents more into their kid’s studies than planning movie outing. Full advantage of this was at display last year for solo release of CE with Eid K3 in Diwali and D3 during Christmas

Movie watching business now is directly connected to disposable money at hand and apart from one big summer movie after exams its mostly a festival thing for truly spectacular figures.

That’s why there is so much bad blood for these 3 / 4 important dates among stars. Aamir being canny has mastered this art of shifting dates to gauge / suit public mood. Since money is least of his concerns he does not mind shifting releases by good one/ two years to get a big opener.

“Salman is easily the bigger star than me. In my films everything from story, screenplay, cast, music etc has to be v good for it to do well. All Salman has to do is pull up his belt a few times”.

Aamir was right here. He is most dependant on good scripts, and support system to fire. He couples that with strategic planning, unnatural breaks etc
And I repeat –there’s nothing wrong in that and is a tactic but needs to be seen as that rather than some rocket science.
Salman is least dependant on the film quality (in the brief phase where he is/was at his turbo phase).

However aamir never talks in a similar way about the other khan -the one who matters—

He did get the strategy right with the promotion and release of Ghajini and get a first 100 cr 6 years ago and then 3I sparked him off into one of the most loved characters and did the BO Trick..what he did with Dhoom3 is took a franchise and elevated it to a level never heard off..had the story been somewhat better..the movie would have cross 300 crore …and those who are saying it didnt trend well ….well 3 30 crore plus days and 3 20 crore plus days is no easy feat either. People enjoyed the movie but didnt love it as 3I.

Hrithik was a saving grace of Krissh3 but overall it was a damp squib movie and whatever the franchise had, he was able to get in terms of BO results. He needs to stage a comeback now with a personal low at this point of time, i have always maintained he has wasted some very important years of his career and allowed others in the space.

SRK..is on a comeback trail..Chennai Express did the trick for him and Happy NY will let him capitalize on that new found mojo..

How could he lay bare the soul of such a crazed character with such accuracy, with every detail so clearly etched out. Full marks to the actress playing Naomi. And respect for Scorsese for managing to capture the testosterone and greed driven male- dominated camaraderie of the brokerage firm, the frenzied energy, the hypnotic cult atmosphere, and the depravity at the core of each character. A thoroughly satisfying film-going experience.

on the movie opening less than expected…well 15cr is still damn good! with awful music, no name lead actress, and failed director…this movie had everything going against it at the BO. not sure how it will hold up. this moment reminds me of another sallu film…kyun ki…it might well be just too ‘serious’ to be accepted at the BO. bad sallu films with good music and lots of comedy and entertainment has proven to work at the BO (bodyguard, ready, dabangg 2)…bad sallu films without lots of comedy and good music has proven to fail at the BO (veer, yuvraaj, london dreams, garv, kyun ki).

Jai Ho had a small drop in business on its second day as it grossed around 16.50 crore nett taking its two day business to around 33.50 crore nett. The business was inmost circuits was similar to Friday with mass circuits being down as they did well on Friday.. The multiplex audience has not taken to the film as they did not gain a lot on Saturday despite being low on Friday

The performance at single screens is better but not outstanding. Sunday is a big holiday for Republic Day so the film should show a good jump.

Sunday is the acid test for Jai Ho and the jump has to be huge. Krrish 3 also suffered a bit in its first three days but showed a huge jump on its fourth day which was a national holiday and that is the sort of thing that is needed by Jai Ho to have a chance of being successful. The chances do look slim as Krrish 3 was hit by pre- diwali festivities in its opening few days but there is no such case here. The plus for the film is that Saturday did not fall a lot so it can’t be written off yet.

        Mohammed Wajihuddin,TNN | Jan 28, 2014, 01.12 AM
        IST MUMBAI:

A section of clerics has asked Muslims to boycott Salman Khan’s films and the products he endorses till he apologises for saying Narendra Modi need not express regret for the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Angry voices have risen from the community since the actor flew kites with the Gujarat CM recently while publicizing his latest movie and seemingly endorsed the BJP leader’s push to be the next prime minister. After calling Modi a “great man” in Ahmedabad, Salman told a news channel last week that there was no need for the CM to apologise for the riots as the judiciary had given him a clean chit.

“Salman’s statement that there is no need for Modi to say sorry for the 2002 riots is provocative and deplorable. It has hurt the sentiments of Muslims and the community should boycott the actor’s present and future films and the products he endorses unless he apologises,” said Maulana Ejaz Kashmiri, a member of the All India Ulema Council and an imam at a mosque in Bhendi Bazaar. Kashmiri has appealed to Muslims not to invite Salman to their social and religious functions.

“Modi will do anything to improve his image among Muslims and secular voters. Did Salman feel the pain of women and children who suffered during the riots? What has he done to rehabilitate the victims?” asked Maulana Khalilur Rahman Noorie, general secretary of the Tanzeem Aima Masajid, an organization of imams.

Salman’s Ahmedabad comments came soon after another storm over his decision to perform at the Samajwadi Party’s Saifai Festival at a time when survivors of the Muzaffarnagar riots were struggling in badly-provided relief camps.

Salman’s father Salim Khan said: “Salman didn’t say anything outrageous. Does anybody remember the many CMs during whose rule several communal riots happened? They remember Modi because he has won elections and is aiming to become PM.”

The call hasn’t gone down well with some. Zafar Sareshwala, a diehard Modi supporter, said: “Salman is a soft target and maulvis don’t have better things to do than attack Salman Khan.”

Salman made a big mistake trusting his brother with the remake…he should have asked AR Murugodoss for direction as he would have made more tighter movie…

People go crazy in the film there’s actors in Wholesale…Pulkit Samrat, Sharad Kapoor, Aditya Pancholi, Ashmit Patel, etc etc etc…who show up and do their bit.

It felt like Sandhi Sudha commercial wherein they pack tv actors for telling good things about the product..

Salman and his fights in the end, Danny and Tabu are the better part of the film…

Dont get me started on crappy music crappy heroine…

Salman you cannot take audience for granted…i will watch and spedn for you if you offer a good entertainment package deal…not this and stop working with your brothers…they killed ur Dabbang franchise…unless you get Abhinav Kashyap or someone else and Sohail Khan should stick to Comedy Circus…

    The reasons here are multiple.

    1. Masala Fatigue
    2. Bad movie

    Most importantly

    3. Salman has reached the end of his glory days. He had a couple of very good years but i guess the golden streak is over.

Of the 3 big guys, Salman is the one who is totally dependent on one kind of movies. So the failure of jai ho is not good for him.

The other two will still go om for a while.

‘I, Frankenstein’ Disappoints at the Box Office
    By BROOKS BARNES

Talk about a corpse. Moviegoers this weekend largely stayed away from the newly released “I, Frankenstein” (Lionsgate), which generated just $8.3 million in ticket sales, for sixth place — a terrible result for a movie that cost $65 million to make and tens of millions more to advertise. Lakeshore Entertainment and Hopscotch Features shouldered almost all costs. Box office analysts posited on Sunday that the target audience, young men, simply had little interest in seeing Mary Shelley’s undead monster re-imagined as an action hero; abysmal reviews didn’t help.

The two top-selling movies in North America over the weekend were “Ride Along” and “Lone Survivor,” both holdovers from Universal. “Ride Along” took in about $21.2 million, for a two-week total of $75.4 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles box office data. “Lone Survivor” had ticket sales of $12.6 million, for a five-week total of about $93.6 million. A pair of animated movies were next: “The Nut Job” (Open Road) took in an estimated $12.3 million, for a two-week total of $40.3 million, and “Frozen” (Disney) sold about $9 million in tickets, lifting its 10-week total to $347.8 million. In fifth-place, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” (Paramount) had ticket sales of $8.8 million, for a disappointing two-week total of $30.2 million.

  50. Jai Ho Does Very Well On Sunday
    Monday 27 January 2014 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Jai Ho had a good weekend thanks to very good business on Sunday which was a national holiday. The film collected 17 crore nett on Friday and 16 crore nett on Saturday and the Sunday total as per early estimates is around 25 crore nett.

This will give weekend figures of around 58 crore nett so despite the initial not quite being that great, the weekend is actually challenging to be the highest ever for a Salman Khan dstarrer epending on what the final total for Sunday is.

Dabangg 2 grossed 58.50 crore nett in three days while Ek That Tiger grossed 56 crore nett and the figures of Jai Ho are around the same as Dabangg 2 depending on the final Sunday total. The business on Sunday has meant that the film has a chance of doing well which did not look the case after the first two days. A lot is dependent on the Monday as the jury is still out on the appreciation of the film as it only did the sort of business it should have on the big holiday while the other two days were below the mark.

  52. Consolidated response to many points made with regards to Dhoom 3, Aamir Khan etc:

In responses to Apex’s many posts on how Dhoom 3 underperformed:

Firstly, it has clearly overperformed, in the sense that it grossed more than what everyone had predicted immediately after its release. It is the biggest grosser domestically and internationally, with more than two dozen records broken. If that is underperformance then we need to relook at words and their meanings. Who deserves the credit for its success? Obviously everyone who has contributed: Aamir, Vijay Krishna, Katrina in that order. Pritam, Abhishek, Uday have done their bit. This is one film where Aamir was criticized for hogging the film all to himself, being there in everyb frame and all that, so naturally he deserves the most credit for the film’s success.

Could it have done better. For sure. It indeed could have done 300 cr and more. If it was an independent film not tied to the apron strings of the Dhoom frnachise. But in exact opposition to what Apex thinks, it si the franchise that has set the limitation. After all, the real breakaway hits are never sequels: Sholay, DDLj, HAH, Gadar, 3 Idiots…Star Wars, Titanic, Avatar. A sequel can be a big hit, nota stratospheric hit. Looking at Dhoom 3 itself, what are the elements that worked the most? The drama, the emotins, the staging, songs like Kamli and Malang. None of which originate from the franchise. What work the least? The motor cycle chase, the action sequences…the elements that are carried over from the franchise. Even in terms of giving the film a good opening, I believe that a YRF production with Aamir and Katrina, showcased through Kamli, Malang anda few dramtic sequences would have got as big an opening. Ghajini and 3 idiots did that, right? And without the Dhoom baggage, the basic story of the great Indian circus centered around Sahir/Samir, their father and Aaliya could have emerged tighter, more powerful , leading to a overall more satisfying film and better trending, like Ghajini and 3 Idiots.

Next I would like to second Satyam when he says that Aamir is the only actor who makes films that are not comedy-capers blockbusters. Satyam mentions Ghajini. I would add Dhoom 3 to the list as well. It is the dram that works there as well. In fcat over the last decade, Aamir is the only actor who makes drama as a genre work. Whether it is TZP, Fanaa, RDB, Talaash or Dhoom 3…there is no other actor who makes serious dram work the way Aamir does. Salman’s failure in this territory has already been documented by someone here. Even for Shahrukh while Chak De ( which is really a sports caper than a human drama) succeeded; MNIK, KANK, Swades did not. The only other actor today who makes drama works is Ranbir. Whether it is Rajneeti, Rockstar or Barfi…he can draw people to watch him in a serious story. Bombay Velvet to establish this more strongly. As for Shahrukh, after Om Sahnti Om and Chennai Express, he has to depend on fluff again in Happy New Year.

  53. rockstar: Yes agneepath worked. And that was drama. But its success was nowhere near Ghajini. Still I will grant that Hritik made that work. But that is just one. Jodha Akbar was a historical romance. Those have always worked. Mughal-EAzam was a runaway blockbuster in that genre. Mangal Pandey has to be cpmpated to Asoka, Legend of Bhagat Singh etc and Mangal Pandey is the most successful among them. I will agree that Ajay can make drama work. So can a few others. But we are talking of scale of success and number of serious drama one has succeeded with, both artistically and commercially. And Aamir is ahead of the rest there. Delhi Belly has an IMDB rating of 7.7 vs 4.3 of Grand Masti. And Delhi Belly was in English, with a few prints in Hindi. Still it did some 60 cr three years back. So when you look at artistic and commercial success, it is much ahead.

The biggest question now is that is the growth on Sunday all to do with the national holiday or is there some appreciation for the content of the film. The next couple of days will be the deciding factor.

Jai Ho fared best in Mumbai as the Gujarat/Saurashtra belt did excellent business but quite a few circuits performed below par. Below is the first weekend territorial breakdown of Jai Ho.

    • Jai Ho has grossed similar figures to Dabangg 2 over the first weekend with the big difference being that Dabangg 2 was a normal weekend while Jai Ho had the advantage of a big national holiday on its Sunday.

If we compare with Ek Tha Tiger its a similar situation as that film was released midweek so had a big first day but saw collections come down on the next two working days. It was also pre-eid so Ek That Tiger which affected collections

So although the collections of Jai Ho are similar to Dabangg 2 and Ek Tha Tiger, the weekend was also favourable for Jai Ho with Dabangg 2 having no holidays and Ek Tha Tiger having a midweek release. Below are the first weekend territory figures for Jai Ho, Dabangg 2 and Ek Tha Tiger.

      https://twitter.com/KomalNahta

Irrespective of what the mullahs say the vast majority of the film audience doesn’t boycott films on these grounds! Here’s a film that didn’t excite anybody to begin with. Of course this is merely the flip-side of the communal card where the same folks always insinuate that there’s a larger than normal cross-section of the Muslim audience when it comes to Salman’s releases. There’s a lot of coded ‘Eid’ language on this score. The film was never hot (by Salman’s current standards). It’s rather despicable to play the communal card at this point.

there’s a family connection here as well. Salim Khan had high praise for Modi sometime back though he made it clear it was a personal relationship. In the video he’s clearly backtracking at points..

of course his idea that no one says anything when others go while they question him because he’s a Muslim is disingenuous. For reasons too obvious to spell out.

I think Nahata is saying an uncomfortable truth,IMO. The film HAS suffered on this account because communal elements have exploited Salman’s comments. The impact in terms may not be huge but I am sure is there. It is not that the average Muslim fan is communal
But they do allow tbeir insecurity to be exploited by their teligious leaders and parties like Congress and Samajwadi party.
SRK actually attracts the communal Muslim fans and fanatics far more, partly rated to his pandering and shameless politics. Salman and Aamir are favored more by the progressive
        And overall more intelligent Muslims.

    • The film hasn’t flopped Infact far from it. This again shows Salman’s mega stardom. A nothing heroine, poor music (Salman films generally have rocking music) and whoever cut the trailer /s needs to be fired. The film is much more than an action film.

I still expect 140 minimum. All those who endorse the ‘trending theory’ (which I think is BS) should have no problems with this film. It made 60 weekend and will comfortably double it. However, Salman on current form should be doing much better.

His next Kick already looks much better. Jacky heroine, Randeep Hooda and Nawazudin in the cast. Plus Nadiadwala will make the film on a large scale.

Plus he’s hired Chetan Bhaghat to work on the screenplay and Rajat Arora to pen the dialogues. Now it may all turn out poorly but the effort to bring in such people etc can be seen. The rajishri film is around 18 months away.

          • Lastly, I still can’t fathom how Jai Ho had such a low opening day. Salman with every film was opening bigger and bigger and 17 is totally not what I expected.

That 40 mark will be breached this year. I suspect 4 films have a chance as all these 4 films also open on a holiday.

            Like

          • Hirani’s films generally don’t have the absolute biggest openings (on day 1) but it might be that the post-3I wave is strong enough to overcome this.

On the rest even the strongest stars can’t overcome everything. If people had liked Jai Ho enough a relatively weak day 1 wouldn’t have meant as much. Will say though that I’d be surprised if Salman were able to replicate his Dabangg through ETT phase going forward. At least on those initials. He’ll still get strong ones but the absolute biggest ones are questionable. Now what could change this is if he has a truly big hit at some point, not just an initial thing. Kick I suspect is not good enough as a film to do this (though I haven’t seen the Telugu original). Barjatya is a while away but also Salman has moved away from that paradigm. His masala avatar is light years removed from Barajtya’s world. He could still get a good success here but it’s not likely to be the sort of thing that excites a universal audience. Plus Barjatya himself is passé. The Salman key after Dabangg was always doing something half-decent (high proportion of tried and tested remakes and so on) and getting by on massive initials and a half-decent follow-through. The problem is that half-decent doesn’t last too long in the absence of proper hits along the way (which audiences really like). Still he’s generated enough steam to put up big numbers for a while. I would just be surprised if it’s anything like the phase he’s had before Jai Ho, either on initials or in absolute terms. Not that this is a knock on him. this late in the day one can’t do much better than him. And unlike SRK he was less project-dependent. So SRK can get big numbers with CE (with a Shetty who had more 100 crore films than anyone else) or in a Farah Khan circus but nothing else after OSO could get this done. I certainly don’t expect films like Fan or the other one he’s doing with Farhan Akhtar to be major in this sense. But he might be smart enough to combine modest success in those kinds of films with these large scale efforts and it’s not a bad plan at all. Ultimately a star can conquer everything but age. The options just start narrowing one way or the other. With Aamir it’s always about the project so it’s a different deal. And even he won’t be able to do at 50 what he was able to do at 40 or 45. There are limits to these things. Even the greatest superstars can’t conquer age.

I heard Bhagat is also wrote the script for 2 States (in addition to writing the book), If that movie turns out well then at least on the script level, Kick should be decent. Sallu+Eid+Hit Music= Maxing out the opening day BO. Also this needing an established heroine thing is BS imo, what about Dabangg? OSO? RNBDJ? Ghajini? Shahid’s belatedly-celebrated director Hansal Mehta has filed an RTI (Right To Information) requesting information in why Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela was given a ‘UA’ certificate. The CBFC has replied, says Hansal, “I got a response from the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC). They are supposed to send you a response to your RTI on exactly the 30th day. I am afraid the response is in very poor English. From what I understood the justification given in the letter is that there are other films with kissing and violence given a ‘UA’ certificate. But my dispute is not about the content of Ram Leela. It’s about why my film Shahid was given an ‘A’ certificate. The film’s message needed to reach itself to young boys. 13-14 year old boys get brainwashed into joining terror organizations. I had hoped they’d learn from Shahid’s experiences.”

Not willing to stop there Hansal has also filed an RTI asking to know why Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Café was granted a ‘UA’ certificate.

While Bhansali and Mehta don’t know one another well enough, the RTI does put a strain on the friendship between Mehta and Shoojit Sircar.

Taking time off from shooting his new film City Lights on a road in Byculla in Mumbai, Hansal took time off to explain, “I want to clarify that I’ve nothing against Sanjay Bhansali or Ram Leela. I liked Ram Leela. As for my other RTI, I loved Madras Café and Shoojit Sircar is an old friend. My objections to the seemingly arbitrary decisions of the CBFC. My battle is with the CBFC. It started with Ram Leela where there was violence kissing and double-meanings. I enjoyed Ram Leela. My problem is, why was a different yardstick used against my film?”

Shockingly Hansal imputes a communal slant to the censorship code. “People on Twitter have said there cannot be the same yardstick for a Muslim protagonist as a Hindu. There is a theory that Indians don’t want to watch films which feature Muslim protagonists. The Examining Committee of the CBFC asked me to remove Shivaji Maharaj’s name from the dialogues of Shahid when his name was not used in any derogatory or incriminating way. Unless I removed the name they refused to grant me a certificate although I explained the context of the reference. What is the whole point behind inviting a filmmaker to a screening while censoring? The idea is to let the filmmaker explain the context of a scene, shot or dialogue that seems controversial. But the censor board was not willing to listen to me. They had come there with their biases and communal prejudices. I refused to cut Shivaji’s name out. I went to the Revising Committee. The then CEO of the CBFC apologized to me. But then they said they’d give me an ‘A’ certificate because Shahid according to them, was very violent. Where was the violence in Shahid?”

Hence, Hansal’s next RTI against Shoojit Sircar’s Madras Café. “The violence in this film is shockingly graphic. I had to send my sons to another room while I was watching Madras Café. At the very beginning there’s a shot of a child being shot. I am not questioning Shoojit’s right to have that sequence. But if this kind of violence gets him an ‘UA’ certificate why not my Shahid?”

Then Hansal makes a slamming insinuation. “When I took Shahid to the CBFC, UTV had not acquired my film. I had gone to the censors on my own. I feel that’s the reason my film was treated so harshly. I feel when a film is co-produced by a corporate house the CBFC is lenient. Ram Leela and Madras Café had Eros and Vicom 18 behind it. But when I asked UTV to fight the censorial decision on Shahid they advised me against it.”

So is Hansal accusing the censor board of corruption?

Says Hansal, “I can’t say that because I’ve no proof. But there is definitely something wrong here. There is enough circumstantial evidence to suggest something seriously amiss. I know the law after shooting for Shahid. So I know what I’m doing. I am filing multiple RTIs against the CBFC. I am also putting an RTI for Grand Masti. I want to understand the criteria for censor certifications.”

Hansal says he wants transparency in the censorship. “I’ve asked the CBFC for the minutes of their meetings while censoring films. I’ve got the minutes for Ram Leela. They are very very sketchy. I hope to see some transparency in the matter of censorship. This is to exorcise my own demons. I don’t want to wallow in the assumption that something is gravely wrong in the way the CBFC treated Shahid. Very honestly I am not doing this for anyone else except me. I am not Arvind Kejriwal. If my battle helps other filmmakers I’d be happy.”

  61. Reports have been reaching our ears that Martin Scorsese’s finance-sector-excess yarn The Wolf of Wall Street has been packing them in – to the extent that getting hold of a ticket in some cinemas seems almost as impossible as acquiring a Lemmon 714 quaalude. (When you’ve managed to see the film, that’ll make more sense.)

It certainly roared in to the No 1 spot on its first weekend in the UK, driving its Porsche across three parking spaces, falling semi-paralysed on to the street and obliterating the competition with some £4.6m. That’s actually the third biggest 18-certificate opening ever in the UK, after Hannibal and Bruno; and boy, is The Wolf of Wall Street 18-certificate. Drugs, sex, nudity and seemingly endless swearing. It’s a raucous Saturday-night event movie, the like of which we haven’t seen for years.

    • First half of the movie is very mediocre and at places confusing due to bad direction / poor editing The chalta hai attitude is evident all over the movie with left over cast and general bhaigiri in filmmaking. Nadira Babbar cannot even say a line properly. Salman has acted well and ended the movie well otherwise this was heading into disaster zone.

But overall the movie is no better and not much worse than the previous ones we have seen with exception of Wanted. The difference here is just the release timing otherwise this too would sail to 140-150 cr easily. But he is too exposed on tv lately which should be minimized as people are getting used to watch him for free.

Salman needs a Rajshri and a hum aapke haain kaun kind of deal to keep up with competition because masala is done deal now. That’s his only shot at these big box office numbers. Rest all will remain under 200.

Lately on tv appearances he seems to have lost a lot of weight and looking in best shape. He definitely has 3 / 4 years at the top at the minimum. Incidentally he has the same notion on festivities and no money for poor box-office numbers which I was talking earlier

Maybe because of the festive week or my fans don’t have the money to go to the theater

  63. I consider myself extremely lucky to have seen Om Dar-Ba-Dar in the theatre last week. And it’s true that after more than 2 decades since it was made, Kamal Swaroop’s film is as ‘experimental’ as Indian cinema gets- Kashyap’s and Q’s (Kaushik Mukherjee) films are not half as radical as this one. But the reason why I loved it so much was behind all the visual gimmickry etc, this is a film which really invents a new way of ‘spinning a yarn’. it really unearths that one art which has died in Indian cinema (and pop-culture)- that of story-telling. And behind all the metaphors, this thankfully is a ‘children’s tale’ (but of course, not only for children). Everyone should see this film ASAP IMO.

Also checked out Q’s Tasher Desh. I hadn’t cared for Q’s earlier Gandu at all- found it nothing more than an exercise in shocking the audience. But to my surprise, this is a far more matured work. Tagore’s work (the titular play) is completely reinvented here- I kept peeling off one allegorical layer after another in the film. And the visuals itself are the price of the ticket.

Ari Folman’s “The Congress” is a masterpiece and one of the summits of animation filmmaking is concerned. And dare I say it’s as good as Waltz With Bashir. The live-action and animation hybrid really works because the film itself is half dream-half nightmare. And it really takes one deep inside the hell-holes of ‘movie business’. And yes, it really bends the sci-fi genre almost to a fault.

I am almost kicking myself that I didn’t see ‘Summer Wars’ earlier. I think this is not just one of the Anime films I have ever seen, but in my view it’s easily one of the best sci-fi films from the last 10-15 years. Atleast the one which makes you contemplate the most (alongwith Gattaca and Upstream Colour). This might just become one of my all time favourite films

Also loved both All is Lost and Mud. So apart from a great sci-fi film (Gravity) and a landmark film on a sort of taboo topic (12 Years…), what is truly heartening is that Hollywood has produced 2 films in ‘American’ genres which were clearly dying as of late- Survival films (All is Lost) and adventure films (Mud).

And much as I admire Kashyap this is a work in a much higher league. Construction of the film’s set has already begun at ND studio, adds a source close to the production house. “Nitin Desai is the film’s art director and shooting for the film will begin in May. About 60 to 70 per cent of the film will be shot in the studio,” says the source.

To add to this, buzz has it that Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar want to sign Deepika Padukone for a film under their banner. “Shooting for the film will begin in December and Deepika should be able to sign on the dotted line.

Aamir Khan has been approached for the same and though he has not yet signed the film, he is likely to give his nod to the project. The film will be directed by Nitya Mehra, who has earlier assisted Farhan and the plot will centre around time travel.”

Jai Ho had a noticeable drop on Tuesday as it grossed around 7.25 crore nett taking the five day total to a little over 74 crore nett. The first week will finish around 85 crore nett as the next two days should add around 11 crore nett with a 15% drop on each day.

The second weekend is very important for it to put up a good to decent final total. A 150 crore nett total is out of the question however the film is in a better position than the first two days where the film looked heading towards a little over 100 crore.

There is just film One By Two releasing this week and that will not be much competition so that Friday total and Saturday growth will tell where the second week is going. At the moment the film is trending towards a similar total like Ready but a big Saturday and Sunday this week can take it higher than Ready which grossed 120 crore nett approx.

Fast forwarded through it last night, and it looks like Salman just hired friends and family, from Daisy Shah (was an extra in one of his movies) to Aditya Panscholi (whose son he is launching despite the Jia Khan affair). As a film, it’s probably (no, certainly) the worst thing I have ever seen. Watched the whole things in 11 minutes.

    • I’d disagree somewhat here. It’s not easy for sure but when you look at the kinds of films that don’t make it is it any surprise that they don’t? No matter how massive the initial you still need a fairly good film to have some sort of decent trending. But it’s true otherwise that given the average quality of the big Bollywood production you can spike things enough to get a big initial but then run out of steam quickly. Alternatively a good film that doesn’t have the mind-blowing initial would need very strong trending on just a ‘good’ initial to get to that stratosphere of 250+ or more. So I guess what I’m saying is that you are right but this reflects the current state of Bollywood production decisions (and so forth) more than anything else. Also a certain corollary holds. While it is hard for films to cross 250 (even with 150+ week 1 numbers) it is equally hard for the same films not to cross a 100 unless they’re utter and total disasters. How often does that happen? If 150+ is possible in week 1 for a number of big films then we can’t possibly celebrate the same ones for crossing a 100. Looked at another way it’s creditable that Barfi or BMB did a 100. But Salman in his best box office phase doing 20-25 more than this (assuming best case scenario) is some kind of failure. I think the problem is that we still tend to treat these 100, 200 bars as absolute ones applicable for all films. Even when we don’t mean to this is the narrative that surrounds us. And so unconsciously at the very least it has an effect. Now on Jai Ho if it can get to 130 or more it would at least indicate some support at the lower end. It could certainly be that it remains stable at its current level. But this isn’t the kind of low bar a star in Salman’s position can be celebrated for reaching.

More generally I’ve always felt these bars meant something only if one took trending into account. otherwise just depending on the initial a film will cross 250 or 200 or whatever given enough time. But these benchmarks are meaningful only if there has been some trending along the way.

I’d finally add that there is some jadedness setting in with all these ‘big bang’ films. OSO trended pretty well in 2007, doubled the initial and a bit more. But I doubt the same OSO could double its initial today if it opened to a 150 or so in week 1 or even a bit less than this. And so Farah Khan ought to be careful with HNY! other than Ghajini and 3I no big film has doubled its initial. Not even Dabangg!

      Like

      • I think in relative terms 200 cores for a Bollywood film is like 400 million domestic total for a Hollywood film and 250 and 300 crores are like 600 and 800 million. Plenty of successful films but some milestones are very diffcult to impossible even for the most liked films. No matter how they get there.
Even the sanest amongst us fall into this trap that based on X , a total of Y is possible. But, there is a limit that inches forward somewhat slowly. It took a long while to pass Ghajini and then,3I tho there was candidate every week that was supposed to do it
        Same will hold for D3.

    • Its wrong notion to think a lot of money is being lost in film indsutry , unless there are absolute duds like Yuvraaj, TMK or Kites etc. If that were the case Shahid Kapoor with his huge number of flops would never be getting any movies by now.

The reason stars are charging so much money and budget has increased to such high level suddenly is due to a lot of new avenues to get the investment back and filmmakers / stars know this. Theatrical revenue is just part of the overall picture and there is money flowing in through satellite rights, overseas huge market, music, DVD sales etc. Due to tremendous ad revenues and reruns on satellite cable, movies have become a very lucrative business. on tv

There may be few end losers in the chain on few projects, but some of the big names in the industry now make sure this does not happen and price adjustments are made towards the end so no one comes out with a big loss, though not making money on such product is considered a loss too.

SRK, Aamir and Salman have been distributors darling not for any reason but fairplay when they make sure no one in the chain loses money. Jai Ho may have been sold for a high price but if you see the movie I doubt the budget there is excessive and most of the movie shot on sets/indoors. Now how Sohail Khan does the end adjustment in pricing is what will make him creditable in the market next time around.

      • It’s not that simple. Hollywood with far more revenue streams offered the same sort of logic in the 90s after a number of big budget films either went bust or under-performed. This had an effect in the industry for many years. for a long time in the following decade a lot of big movies were co-produced by two big studios. But once again things have gone out of whack. Spielberg and Lukas said last year that the current Hollywood model was unsustainable unless ticket prices were really jacked up on the big films. There was a report on the Avengers about how this film needed to do 400 in the US just to break even after accounting for international figures. The film did 620 but most other such films in Hollywood don’t gross like this. If this is the case in Hollywood what do you think is going on in Bollywood?! First off all these numbers that are thrown around aren’t verified or verifiable. secondly when you have totals thrown out it’s hard for people to understand how the ‘food chain’ works at each one of its nodes. So yes if Sohail Khan makes a table profit of however many crores he has to pay back some of his distributors who either lost money or didn’t make much unless he never wants a film financed again! Salman is pretty good at this sort of thing anyway. But when he does this he’s also cutting into his profit margin or whatever his table profit was. Most big films with big stars aren’t really all that profitable. Unless they do surprisingly good business or they’re made at a relatively low cost. Usually the money is made on smaller or medium-scaled productions that surprise in a big way. With the big ones all you get is some kind of ‘plus’ deal. That’s why everyone’s going crazy for these initials. They assure some sort of safety assuming the film doesn’t tank after this but the idea that most of these films are blockbusters or whatever is fiction of the poorest kind. But industries sustain things this way for years. Also a lot of directors are weeded out at different points. one doesn’t often notice this. The smart ones like Rohit Shetty never get into expensive productions. And the ones that do are out of a job even with decent returns sometimes if a certain profitability margin isn’t met. As for why things aren’t different structural problems years or decades in the making aren’t undone all of a sudden. As for Shahid Kapoor or whoever you can’t just make films with the top 3-5 stars! What industry works like this? But Bollywood has gone smaller in some ways. The masala remakes are usually not very expensive. Many major stars also do smaller films. The Ra One or K3 kind of super-production is relatively rare. the HNY kind of film is the much more quintessential deal where you get a circus going, maybe you spend a lot of money on one or two videos, the rest is all about marketing. in Hollywood too the latter costs are huge, sometimes the major part but there is still enough money spent on the ‘art’ or the SFX or what have you. In Bombay a lot of money is spent but one isn’t sure what they actually do with it! And again these numbers are just thrown around without any sense of how a film industry economy works. Ultimately the movie business always has a certain built-in irrationality to it. A lot of the pain is often deferred. There are major stars who underperform in one film and are then paying back with their next two! It’s very complicated in official and unofficial ways but the point is that few films that are called hits in the media are so in any reasonable sense of the term. 99% of what one gets from the media or the trade in this sense is pure fiction. They’ve become simply an advertising arm of the industry.

I don’t understand how CE could cost 70 crores to make when the entire thing was made in south India, didn’t have vfx or a Malang type song and SRK didn’t take his salary. If CE is 70 crores then HNY has to be about 100 imo. Actually all of SRK movies are high budget movies, and especially his last 4-5. Comparatively, besides D3 for Aamir and ETT for Salman, all their other movies have medium budgets.

Jai Ho dropped further on Wednesday with collections around 5.25-5.50 crore nett. The collections on Monday were decent but it has seen rapid falls over the next two days and is now sure to collect less than 85 crore nett in its first week.

Its not a good sign for the second week as with these falls on Tuesday and Wednesday, a second week total of 30 crore nett or near that looks impossible. A 30 crore nett second week would have given the film a good final total.

The only plus for the film is lack of competition this week but even that can only help so much with collections dropping at this rate. The collections at single screens are also not holding up that well.

    • They are dropping by 2crore per day, a really bad sign. First week being 83-87 crore depending on source, is a sign now that the film is stubbling to 100 crore rather than cantering past it. The second week now will struggle to go past 20 crore.

    Q. Is Aamir Khan the real superstar now as he is the only one to take a big opening without backing of a holiday with Dhoom 3?

Ans. Dhoom 3 may not have a had a holiday but the film had around 125 crore spend on the just the production side of the film as compared to the 45 crore production spend on Jai Ho. When ticket rates are so high the audience will only come in numbers if they feel they are getting their tickets worth. Salman Khan is still the biggest star but his films have to be grander like Ek Tha Tiger rather than Jai Ho types if the record numbers are to come in.

      • I have no doubt that if someone says that the cost/production/marketing DOES impact a film. I have no doubts.
I do however have doubts when BOI write it up. It is disingenuous the way they put it.

Fact. D3 did open biggest on non-holiday or holiday. The opening has put laid to rest the notion that holiday is be all and end all of film business. D3 opened on a record without a holiday – if anyone can name the last film to do this and when it will be interesting to know!

I would be much more inclined to find genuine thoughts from BOI if they simply said that Jai Ho has not accumulated the same level of interest as ETT did or Bodyguard. The audience does not have an equal level of interest in each Salman movie or Aamir movie. Interest levels differ based on that star in questions current stature, the film arriving in question, the buzz surrounding the film and many other things namely the recent track record of the star – not to mention music, co-stars, subject. The problem is BOI has never peddled this type of thought. It is used here as an afterthought. In fact most of their answers “content” – there standard response is if the content is good the film will work…which is fine. But they don’t mention content for Jai Ho. They mention production and cost as a scapegoat.
There are many examples of low cost films that do splendid business.

Also when MP, RDB, Fanaa, Ghajini, 3 Idiots broke records they WERE NOT the costliest or best produced films!

The whole statement has so many contradictions.

Basically Jai Ho (without seeing it) is a film that is not connecting well with its target audience. Call a spade a spade. Meanwhile the producers pocket a massive profit. Maybe if they sold it at a reasonable price and marketed at the level the budget warranted, it would be deemed a fair success!

        • The whole model of selling to distributors is flawed.
There should be a genuine attempt to fix a ratio between cost/marketing of a film and the maximum price a distributor should pay. They can judge whether the film in question deserves the maximum or they want to go lower. The “sellers” here cannot be proud of themselves. They don’t need to make “this” level of profits. They’ll never be trusted, all credibility is lost.
It should be a chain where everyone has a reasonable chance of making money. The vast majority of films should make some level of profit with some making more than expected. In the current model though it seems distributors make loads on a few films and lose a fair bit on many. It’s like a betting shop. But it comes back to the number of genuine hit films the industry produces. I’d wager that % is not more than 10% for the last 20 years. 90% of films are genuine flops for distributors I’d bet. And I’d bet most of them would not have been if they paid a much more reasonable price.

To be fair though, if your dumb enough to pay it, you deserve it!

YRF’s experiment with the 3Khans (+Katrina) reveals the extent of this starpower threadbare:
      ETT: 185cr
      JTHJ: 135cr
      D3: 280cr

Also, note, without any holiday, D3 had the least favorable opening 3days, yet had the strongest opening of all 3 movies.

It was unfortunate yrf had a date clash with SOS and JTHJ could not reach realize its blockbuster opening potential.

It’s a lot of ingredients put together but most important these days is the release timing. Some times anticipation of a better moving coming shortly too holds the audience from going to theatre.

Now this could have been prevented by a strong director but Anubhav Sinha had no credentials to reign in srk there and he went berserk hamming.

That is why CDI remains his last best performance and reason was simply Shimit’s no nonsense attitude and sticking to script.

    • In a nutshell srk stardom in 90s was completely driven by these big production houses and attachment to big names. He fell off the charts in recent times due to his stupidities and recklessness. How can you refuse a Robot and 3 Idiots and do Ra1 and Rab ne. On second thoughts , may be he is too much of a businessman to be an actor now.

Aamir was and still does bank on sheer exclusivity and being smart in not crossing his limits with the projects he does. He would simply fail if went along the routine path and thankfully his early flops made him wiser. This hatke is his usp and what made him.

I am not saying Salman is more talented, but he has been real superstar and has done projects left, right and centre and with one and all and with all sorts of cast and mind you with no insecurities whatsoever. He was easily able to maintain his standing in top 3 all the time for last 25 years and with bigger names attached, he gave effortless blockbusters.

Even with Jai Ho, when the end credits started to roll and he came on with his Jai Ho title track in rock star mode all was forgiven… at least from my side. There was freshness there unlike the third class show of bhaigiri throughout the movie. Hope he recovers with Kick which is an Eid release and there will be a section of crowd loaded with money.

No offensive comments please and I am in no mood to rebuttal and simply putting my pov…

  89. Some excellent points all around.
To answer MSD, yes- Salman has raw star wattage and that has carried him through uneven filmography.
Aamir per se does not have the same crazy following but he has created a broad appeal by being smart and doing the right kind of films. SRK has a following which is loyal but is dwindling.
SRK’s success has largely been based on serial movies as a lot of his movies were like a serial to the previous one. CDI showed that there ARE more possibilities for him but he lacks both conviction and credibility when it comes to hatke films.

  90. Agree to most points.

Aamir has been the smartest while deciding which direction his career would move in. SRK has always considered himself to be the king & i guess that was the reason for his downfall. Having said that he still in my opinion is the only actor who has the widest acceptance across the globe. Give a movie with a good script that suits him & is universal , he can still get a huge initial.

Salman has been a entirely unique case, he has given hits without really thinking about it. But i still feel that of the three Salman is the least gifted actor. But without doubt he has the highest fan following.

  91. I agree somewhat with MSD…that Salman has done weird low grade production crew films and still managed to come out …something like Bandhan…or Tere Naam or stuff..so the movies have either recovered, semi hit to even hit. Now what he did was align himself with likes of YRF and his own brothers and the masala bandwagon..that got him going big time. Effortlessness of success is surely with him.

For SRK, he was great in aligning himself with cream like YR and KJo and catering to Urban and Overseas audiences strengthening the market for himself. There was a the time 5-6 years back he was the number one overseas star. But lot has changed..the cream like YR and Kjo have themselves branched out into the multiple productions and they have to compete with likes of UTV, Viacom etc and the multiplex boom..what has happened is more and more content needs to be generated and the dependency has a select few superstars have gone down and hence you saw Hrithik, Ranbir, Akshay all showing some footing.

Aamir has strategically placed himself to be a brand that people like and await. He doesn’t have that Salman superstar aura or SRK’s charm for romance to be a conventional hero. But imagine despite being short, weird ears..he has lead himself to records and landmark films in all genres.

Overall, the fact remains that today only a packaged deal will work..a b grade production will be TOLERATED by the fan of the superstar but won’t go beyond a semi hit or recovery movie. The Star plus production values but support cast and execution…and its relative percentage makes a movie a blockbuster.

  92. Aamir is not god to predict that his planned movies will be blockbusters or superhits. He just wanted them to do well and make some profit for all. He is always insecure before the release of a movie because he works hard, very hard and coordinates. Salman had a string of flops too and nobody wants to talk about it. He is now in a phase where his films are performing well and Salman shrewdly has started to give the type of movies his fans love. Only in Jai Ho he slipped a bit but his fans did not let him down. Aamir has very few fans that too nitpicking ones, but his films are rare and always gives something different and fresh. Even in Dhoom 3, the film lost its essence just to accommodate Aamir and the only thing that reminded of Dhoom franchise was Abhishek and Uday along with chases. Inspite of not having sufficient fans, how aamir’s films work like magic most of the time? Some quality plus entertainment.is assured.
Having said this, I prefer a Talaash more than a Dhoom 3, a flawed Fanaa more than ghajini, RDB over 3 Idiots.

    • M S Dhoni thinks that aamir plans in such a way that his films become superhits or hits. A film’s performance is most unpredictable and aamir can plan a good film but he cannot make that film perform. It is the audience who has the power to make or break a film. As Lord Krishna says in Geeta to do one’s duty sincerely without expecting results. Blockbusters, I mean, in this context.

Which is why even during SRK’s “dull phase” he still delivered 3 100 crore movies and 200 crore worldwide grossers and Jai Ho will still make around 120. It’s almost as if SRK and Salman fans go to see their stars movie mostly to see their favorite actor while Aamir’s fans go to see his movie expecting to see a good movie. If Aamir delivered 3-4 crap movies in a row like SRK (Ra.1, Don 2, Jthj, CE), his fan base would diminish singnificantly

ETT was the only time Salman got an extraordinary opening all across the board yes i know dabangg , ready and bodyguard all did very well but ETT surprised one and all with the kind of initial it got but even with all the grand look that BOI is talking about today it still couldnt go past 3 idiots that too after 3 years . All this is not to put down salman have no intention to do so as i believe salman is a big star just dont agree with the some of the things u said . With that mindset, how can he give credit to aamir khan? He has to find some lame, stupid argument like costs to discredit aamir’s success in terms of boxoffice. Dhoom franchise is a dumb franchise like Race franchise and giving the franchise more credit is ridiculous. Even a Rohit Shetty’s franchise is much better in terms of fun elelment.

And why Hrithik does not find a place here? Inspite of a kiddish movie like Kkrish 3, Hrithik’s presence made it into a blockbuster.
