  1. “Bobby and Pyasa shaped my view of love” – Rakeysh Mehra
    By Subhash K. Jha, Feb 14, 2014 – 10:34 IST

“Raj Kapoor’s Bobby and Guru Dutt’s Pyasa are the two romantic films that shaped and moulded my view of love and life. Actually, I first saw Bobby at the Regal theatre in Connaught Place in Delhi in 1973 when I was 10 with my family. Movie-going was always a big event for the family. My father was great fan of Raj Kapoor. And Raj Saab was launching his son in Bobby. So it was a especially important film for our family. I must have seen Bobby at least ten times when it first had its golden-jubilee run. Each time, it was in the theatre and not on the small screen. I remember falling in love with the film and with Dimple Kapadia. That was a child’s amazement at a film that shaped his romantic perceptions. Then later when I grew up I saw Bobby with the eyes of a filmmaker. And then I saw what great filmmaking skills had gone into it. Somewhere deep down Bobby remains entrenched in my heart. And then as filmmaker nobody can beat Raj Kapoor Saab. The whole treatment of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was totally RK. And Dimple Kapadia completely changed our lives. She changed the way we looked at a Hindi film heroine. She defined the very concept of a ‘breath of fresh air.’ She was so comfortable with her sexuality. We had never seen anything like her.

And what songs by Laxmikant- Pyarelal! Lataji at 40 sang like a 16-year old for Dimple. Music today in our films has become a tool for marketing and not a tool for creative expression. The only better interpretation of Romeo & Juliet than Bobby is Titanic. The sacrifice of love at the end worked for me. The forced happy ending in Bobby spoilt it for me. For me the film ends when Rishi and Dimple jump into the river.

The treatment of love and romance in Guru Dutt’s Pyasa greatly influenced my style of filmmaking. In that one song ‘Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Lagalo Janam Saphal Ho Jaye’ the way in which Waheeda Rehmanji looked at Guru Dutt…I don’t think there can be any better definition of love….Or the expression of ecstasy and exultation when Waheedaji sees Guru Dutt alive in the ‘Jinhe naaz hai hind par woh kahan hai…’ no one can equal that expression of romantic joy. And when she sings ‘Jaane Kya Tune Kahi’ she is singing the lines of a poet she doesn’t know personally. She is celebrating the idea of the man, and not the man himself. Every moment of Pyasa breathes romance for me.”

  2. Gunday Has Strong Opening At Multiplexes And Single Screens
    Friday 14 February 2014 11.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gunday had a strong opening in most places in India with around 60-65% collections on average. The opening was very good at multiplexes and the single screens that opened early.

The start for Gunday was better in North and Central India than Mumbai circuit and though Mumbai was good it was not as strong as places like Delhi/UP or CI. It was the opposite for Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram – Leela the last Ranveer Singh starrer which opened best in Mumbai circuit.

It is Valentine’s Day today so the film should get a little boost from that at multiplexes with better collections in the evening and late afternoon than a normal Friday. Gunday is on course to put up a very good first day total and if it sustains it may well emerge the first hit of 2014.

    • Gunday Challenging For Top Opening Of 2014
      Friday 14 February 2014 14.30 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Gunday is challenging for the biggest opening of the year in terms off occupancies. Jai Ho had also opened similar occupancies of around 60-65% on average on day one and its a similar story with Gunday.

The collections of the film will find it tough to get to Jai Ho levels as there is a 30% difference in the screen count with Gunday being screened on 1100 fewer screens. Jai Ho was released on around 3900 screens in India while Gunday is 2800 screens approx.

Still to have similar occupancies to a Salman Khan starrer on the first morning is an achievement and that too without a big crowd pulling male lead albeit on a smaller screen count. If Gunday keeps on going at this pace through the day it has the possibility of returning the best figures of 2014 in a couple of circuits where Jai Ho underperformed.

    • BO update: ‘Gunday’ ends dry spell, starts with a bang!
      By Taran Adarsh, February 14, 2014 – 15:21 IST

The dry spell at the BO has ended. GUNDAY has embarked on a flying start at the domestic BO, taking one of the biggest starts of the year so far. The expectations from the film have been all-time high after the first trailer was launched several weeks ago and a robust start was definitely on the cards. However, the start has been super not just at single screens but also at multiplexes, which has caught a section of the industry by surprise, since masala films, generally, don’t open too well at plexes.

GUNDAY is expected to record superb collections over the weekend and if it continues the momentum on weekdays, it could turn out to be huge grosser.

    Friday 14 February 2014 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Hasee Toh Phasee had a decent first week of 27.50 crore nett as the metros did well. The film held up pretty well over the weekdays. Mumbai circuit grossed around 9.25 crore nett, Delhi/UP was around 6 crore nett while East Punjab was 2.70 crore nett approx

Mumbai, Delhi/UP, East Punjab and Mysore were the circuits that did well while others had low figures though they were steady with low collections on the weekdays. The film is not a huge hit but is a safe proposal

It will see a fall in the week two due to the release of Gunday though the second Friday could be reasonably steady due to Valentines Day. The lifetime business of the film should finish around 35 crore nett.

  7. Gunday is a kind of film where the acting honours are shared between Ranveer Singh’s pectorals and the scowl on Arjun Karpoor’s face. Very lame film…I mean this could have been great fun like OUATIM. And the amount of unintentional homoeroticism at display here is hilarious. The sole bright spots are a pre-credit sequence involving the 2 kids. And somehow Irrfan manages to come out unscathed from this mess.

  9. I saw this movie earlier tonight, I’d give it a 3.5/5. It was good and had tons of drama, but I expected more based on the trailer. Ranveer is excellent and Arjun has improved but still needs to more improvement. Irrfan is reliable as always and Priyanka does what she always does-look like a million bucks and put on a serious face for 2-3 scenes so she can act. The songs were excellent. The bromance was great, the romance was not. Which was a surprise considering I liked Ali Abbas Zafar’s Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Yes this film is a rehash of all 70s malala movies. And no they did not take the time to fix the problems found in the 70s masala movies and make a stronger film. The action is pretty good although it suffers from the same thing all bollywood action these days suffer from-TOO MUCH SLOW MOTION!. The cinematography/costumes/background music was good(Although this is true for all big-medium movies barring Jai Ho). Tbh I found MBDK more entertaining than this move although they are of different genres.

This movie will do a ton for Ranveer, I expect him to overtake Ranbir after this year. I think Ranveer is the only young actor who can develop a mass audience following. Arjun Kapoor’s next 2 states will have a little more increase in hype a result of this film. This does nothing for Priyanka or Irrfan.

Overall it’s worth a one time watch.

I enjoyed the Salman-Anupama Chopra interviews where Salman bashes Chopra for being to Westernized and obsessed with Hollywood. Rajeev Masand the fat ass ends every negative review with a simile about food. And after all these years I’ve come to realize that if Raja Sen gives a movie a bad movie, that means I’ll probably end up liking it.

  10. Gunday First Day Collections Report
    Saturday 15 February 2014 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Gunday had very good first day grossing around 15 crore nett as per early estimates. The film had solid collections all over with collections in East Punjab beating the biggest opener of 2014 Jai Ho due to there being a holiday in Punjab state, West Bengal and Assam also saw similar collections to Jai Ho though other circuits were lower.

The collections are very good for a film like Gunday and it was multiplexes with better collections than single screens even though it was an action film.

This was due to two factors the first being that multiplexes got benefit of Valentines Day and second being that the cast has limited face value for the single screen audience. The single screen collections were good but for this type of film they had potential to be better. It will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend as Saturday growth will be tough as multiplexes might not show growth but Sunday should be up and a 40 plus weekend looks easily achievable for the film.

The film was also had a release in Bengali with the screen count unlikely to be over 50 screens..

Gunday had a big drop on day two as it collected around the 10.50-11 crore nett mark. The drop was expected as day one benefited from Valentines Day but it should have been around 15-20% and the film has dropped around 25-30% which is a cause for concern in terms of long term business
The drops were across the board with all circuits dropping and the film has now collected 25.50-26 crore nett in two days which is still good but the trend does not look strong.

Sunday will see an upward trend again but with that drop on Saturday it will be a tough ask for the film to get back to the Friday levels.

  18. Gunday -of flawed wannabe action masala

This is an inconsistent flick that loses plot, focus and has big loopholes….. Some of the scenes are unintentionally hilarious like the oiled-chest combat scenes & the repetitive imbecilic cliches.

But I won’t totally trash it either. Theres something endearingly innocent in this bromantic action wannabe epic. IOne can see how this director knows the grammar of the 70s action masala. He has been lying marinated in that world. There’s not much pretence of trying to spoof or repackage that makes it somewhat more fun than say an OUATIM2 & a bullet raja.

It’s plain crappy fun at places and has certain action set pieces you have seen umpteen times before. But the music is reasonably packaged for this genre and the heart is in its place somewhat and that’s what saves this from being a total washout.

Priyanka is competent as usual and arjun kapoor is a bit better than I expected and keeps up his updated abhishrek bachchan act. irrfan just floats through effortlessly.

Ranveer Singh is expectedly the best of the lot. He suffers from inconsistencies in tone and pitch and a tendency to go overboard as usual. But undeniably, he is a star the moment he entered on screen in his first film. If he takes care of these issues, he has the potential of superstardom in the future.

In a day and age where a Kaam Leela with Deepika dishin out soft porn elements in a bhansali setting makes nearly 110 crores, this should do atleast 80-90 crores -which isn’t a bad deal. The problem is that it may fall between the single screen and multiplex stools, preventing it from doing more– the action puts the multiplexers off and the PYTs don’t like the action bit.

Though I somewhat want it to inch towards 80 crores plus domestic. If not for anything, just for the random moments of kiddish fun…

      Thats what’s goin on 🙂

“A source from the unit says that the growing proximity between the lead pair is evident during the shoot in Manali. While Katrina was one of those who tried to boost his morale when he broke up with his wife, Hrithik responded by offering her a comforting shoulder following her New Year’s tiff with Ranbir Kapoor on the subject of marriage.

“Both are recovering from recent heartbreaks and have found an anchor in each other,” adds the source, pointing out that when Hrithik was hospitalised, Katrina went straight to meet him after returning from her famous Ibiza trip with Ranbir. “His injury delayed Bang Bang and Katrina’s schedule was knocked for a six. But she stood by his side and accommodated all the date changes without complaining. On the contrary, she was always trying to cheer him up by calling him up or sending his text messages.”

    • Gunday Has Good First Weekend
      Monday 17 February 2014 12.30 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Gunday had a good weekend as it collected around 40.25 crore nett over its first weekend. The film was good in most circuits with only Mysore really underperforming. There was a drop on Saturday but that was partly to because the first day had collections that were a little higher than they would have been normally due to Valentines Day.

The film collected 15 crore nett on Friday, 11.25 crore nett on Saturday and 14 crore nett on Sunday.

The business in multiplexes across India was better than single screens despite it being an action masala film. The film is a success but it is the weekdays that will tell if the film can become a major hit.

Its difficult to tell what the weekend trend was as that depends on the Valentines Day benefit, if it benefited by 1-1.50 crore then the trend is not that good but if the benefit was 2.5-3 crore then its a decent trend. It is due to Valentines Day that the collections are lower on Sunday than Friday which is a rare especially for a film scoring at multiplexes.

  24. Gunday First Monday Collections

    Box Office India Trade Network

Gunday grossed around 5.75-6 crore nett on Monday as per early estimates. Its a 60% drop from Friday but that was Valentines Day so was a bit higher than it should have been.

The Monday figures are at a decent level but the trend does not look there for the film to become a major grosser which was a possibility after the opening it took. The week is looking to be in the 60 crore nett range which is good but mainly thanks to the good weekend and especially first day.

The question now what sort of numbers can it add after the first week as there is competition over the next two weeks especially where multiplex business is concerned.

Ranveer Singh though…dude is on his way, for better or worse, to becoming the next SRK. Seems to be able to create effortless chemistry with any of his co-actors, choc full of energy and charismatic to the max. Although in Gunday I was reminded of Sanjay Dutt for some reason.
I see no merits in Arjun Kapoor, unless he litierally re-invents himself as Anil Kapoor mark 2 – he was best in this film when he was being goofy and aloof, rather than intense or crazy.

      • Ranveer Singh, yes love him or hate him, has an energy that just doesn’t go unnoticed. In one of the awards recently, he basically stole the show with his honey singh spoofs, ram lakhan dances etc. etc.. I warmed up to the guy starting from Ram Leela, it takes guts to say the dialogues and wear the crazy clothes that he did with style and grace. He was also very lively on the Koffee with Karan episode.

I must say this is going to be one difficult time for the last generation actors like Shahid, Abhishek or even Hrithik to keep up. These new guys like Sushant, Ranveer, Ayushman etc. seem hungry and smart.

        • I don’t think Sushant or Ayushman will ever make it that big, they just don’t have that star quality/appeal at least imo. Even their movies are purely multiplex deals and not the big multiplex grossers such as YJHD or JNTYJ. I don’t see any of there forthcoming movies crossing 40-50 crores. They’ll be stuck in the Imran Khan range although they’re both better actors than him. What HR does, no other superstar in Bollywood can currently provide. Dhoom 3 and Krrish 3 proves this.

The circuits were records were beaten by smaller margins where Nizam/Andhra and Tamil Nadu/Kerala as Chennai Express had set huge totals in these markets.

In overseas it set a new record in Australia by a phenomenal 59.27% while in United Kingdom it was only 3% ahead of My Name Is Khan but that really can’t be called under performance as that market has been struggling for years and a ?2 million total is phenomenal today. Below are finishing positions of Dhoom 3 markets of India and main markets overseas.

  30. Top Ten Box Office Chart

    Box Office India Trade Network

Hasee Toh Phasee led the box office charts last week as the other new releases had awful collections. Heartless, Babloo Happy Hai and Ya Rab could not collect despite all three getting a 250 screen release. Heartless was the best of the lot.

Jai Ho is coming to the end of its run and may collected a little over 108 crore nett in the final. Dhoom 3 has finished its run with a little over 261 crore. Below is the box office chart for the week ending 13 Feb 2014.

    • Interesting that they are saying that D3 ended the run at 260 crores. I thought BOI said somewhere it was on target for 270 crores. Looks like there was a downward revision after that.

      • If they had made a good film, 350 would have been an easy task. Still, 260 is the biggest gross ever.

        • On a total aside, how many people here are watching HBO’s True Detective? This show is just amazing, and Matthew McConaughey has discovered such greatness that I didn’t know he was capable of. Makes House Of Cards look like junk-food, which it really is, but still a lot of fun.

        • Liked True Detective a lot though I think it’s stagnating a bit at this point. Might pick up again. It’s wonderfully shot. This and the remarkable lead performances make the show. The killer angle is fine on its own but it wouldn’t be enough to sustain the show because we’ve seen too much of it in all kinds of permutations. Then of course there is the whole philosophical riff here which too I have somewhat less patience for. But it’s overall very well-done. Can’t argue there.

On House of Cards could never quite understand the fuss here. It’s perfectly entertaining but hardly the ‘great’ show everyone makes it out to be. And Spacey could do this in his sleep! Probably prefer the British version overall, that too was hardly aiming for greatness of any sort.

        • I abandoned House of Cards after I saw the pilot last year but I’m gonna give it another shot. With True Detective at this point my plan is to binge it once the entire season is wrapped. In general this one story per season model appeals to me. I haven’t seen American Horror Story but it’s a similar approach in this sense.

        • I agree on House of Cards. Things are simplistically handled but there is enough drama and tension that you will like it.

        • I am liking True Detective, but I though the best murder mystery on TV in recent years was Broadchurch. This was just excellent in every which way.

  31. Agree with your take on House Of Cards, but I just love True Detective completely. Even the slow pacing lends it a complexity I haven’t seen in any other show.
