Known for his trendy avatar, Saif Ali Khan has been the choice of Abbas Mustan for their stylish thriller franchise Race and now the actor has bagged the lead role in the on screen adaptation of the literary classic ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ which is an adventure novel written by French author Alexandre Dumas in 1844 along with Amitabh Bachchan.
The classic is based on a man who is a victim of deceit and while on his way to avenge the traitors comes across an island of treasure. Directed by Abbas Mustan, this film will be backed by Sunir Kheterpal of Azure Entertainment. The film will also see Amitabh Bachchan in a pivotal role where he plays a family man who gets trapped into the world of mystery after a murder. Mustan revealed that the film will not be an out and out adaptation but will have the Abbas Mustan touch with their addition of thrills and chills.
The yet to be titled film is slated to go on floors in October and will release in 2015.

This is a good project. I’m always for a Monte Cristo adaptation! Wonder what part Bachchan has though. Could have the Abbe Faria part (assuming it’s been extended a bit). In any case the Edmond Dantes part is a great one for any lead star.

Yes, there has always been a great masala movie in this novel — unfortunately, I don’t think Abbas-Mustaan are the directors for it, and I think it will end up more interesting in the pre-release write-ups than on the big screen.

Now this sounds interesting, but wish a better director was involved.

BTW a great contemporary take on Count Of Monte Cristo is Jeffey Archer’s novel A Prisoner Of Birth, it has all the masala trappings done right.

‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ is a remake of the Alexander Dumas tale by the same name. Dantes, a sailor who is falsely accused of treason by his best friend Fernand, who wants Dantes’ girlfriend Mercedes for himself. Dantes is imprisoned on the island prison of Chateau d’If for 13 years, where he plots revenge against those who betrayed him. With the help of another prisoner, he escapes the island and proceeds to transform himself into the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo as part of his plan to exact revenge.

Henry is right and probably it would be better to make a movie based on Archer’s book.

How come there is nothing about Drishyam anywhere on this blog? Must have inspired Satyam and/or GF to pen down some thoughts I was thinking (irrespective of whether they liked it or not). Caught it just yesterday. A film ripe for dissection.

OT: Anjali Menon’s new film with Fahadh Faazil and Dulqar Bangalore Days is breaking the records recently set by Drishyam. Her Manjaadikuru was lovely so this could be something to look forward to.
