  1. Just not happening. Arjun Kapoor looks leaden. Hardly funny and barely watchable. The music too is strictly ho-hum. It needed the genius of a Hirani to transform the material. And looking at Arjun’s performance one can realise what a stellar performance Aamir gave at 40plus. His engineering student feels a hundred times younger and and 1000 times more intelligent and a zillion times more energetic than this limp Arjun Kapoor.

i luved this trailer and casting is fine – Alia is rocketing up towards the no. 1 spot – well her brother rahul naming her Meryl of India is bit too much but she is a lethal combo of looks + talent and doing the right films.

  3. Liked the trailer and liked the music and overall feel to it. But I’m still not a fan of Arjun. Ranbir/Ranveer would be much better, even stale Imran could pass. And I agree with Utkal about 2 States. Actually I feel that Aamir/SRK could still pull of this role better.

  5. The point is , it is just not funny. Lines like ” Lekin 90% Tamilians gorey bhi to nahin hote hain’ just don’t fly. What it needed is a gaggle of gag writes to sit and develop new gags based on the Punjabi-Tamilan culture clash. What works in the book wont work in the film. That is why I said you need a a Hirani-Abhijat kind of imaginative reworking of the material. Which I don’t think they have done here.

    • Even in Shaadi ke side effects there is some dialogue which is in bad taste.
If your daughter resembles your mother in law, slap her daily.
      How repulsive!

  6. Sanjana: I am not talking of taste , good or bad, here. What I am saying is the lines about ‘ qualified’ ‘ goray nahin’ or whatever and the whole sequence is NOT FUNNY.

    • Totally agree, this is actually an embarrassing trailer. The book was alright, and had many endearing moments. This is just a bad translation, and Arjun Kapoor is completely useless. No looks, no talent…nothing at all.

      • Even Akshay Kumar whose dialogue delivery is pathetic is a Jesse Eisenburg when you compare him to Arjun Kapoor who is remarkably bad. Alia Bhatt seems to be like a whiff of fresh air here. Looking forward to see Revathi and Amrita Singh who are fine actresses. But the trailor is bland and uninteresting.

        • Revathy yes but Amrita Singh?!

          • Isn’t Amrita Singh Saif Ali Khan’s ex wife? LOL and now she’s playing Arjun Kapoor’s mother. Also this trailer seems like Karan Johar’s Multiplex version of Chennai Express with terrible lead actors.

          • Yeah I shouldnt have spoken about them in the same sentence as Revathi is some pedestals higher but Amrita Singh has suffered from the usual 1980’s issue which most actresses suffered. There were hardly any roles for them. Recently saw Aaina and she was fine in it. Ditto for Kalyug…Think she can do well here…

          • Satyam the 1980s are making a comeback! Amrita Singh was in Aurangzeb; Poonam is at the center of a new TV serial; and most impressively, Anita Raj played a Sonia Gandhi-like figure in the Hindi 24 (which was actually quite good, and better than the Jack Bauer 24s I have seen; admittedly I only caught a couple of seasons; kudos to Anil Kapoor for co-producing this, although the show is partly enjoyable because of a large canvas of characters, and Anil isn’t the charismatic center here; it is far more populated, and far less claustrophobic, than the American show)…

          • I thought the same thing Sanjana! Bhoopalam was very good in a two-dimensional role, and in general the show was well cast…

Hardly exciting. Seem to follow the novel in a usual, bland, predictable manner. No pleasant surprises!

  9. What is this film about? Chetan Bhagat’s sex life?

    • LOL. I blame Karan Johar. Alia Bhatt looks like a High Schooler and seeing her in these “sex scenes” makes me slightly uncomfortable.

lol – arjun kapoor looks totally out of place here – in a lighter vein – reminded me of “The Reader” where Kate teaches the lessons of pleasure to that kido 🙂 😉

  10. New song:

    [added to post]

I like the song, SEL are doing well in their return to commercial movies and Benny Dayal is of course great. I wish I could say the same for Arjun Kapoor. Alia in this song looks like she did in SOTY. The visuals remind me of SOTY as well, must be the KJO effect

    • Actually I’m wondering what inputs at all did Sajid Nadiawala have for this movie?? Isn’t he co-producer? It sure does not show!

since when Sajid has started giving inputs? 🙂 he is the money-bank out to triple his money – simple……

  11. Each song as it comes out is making the film look worse than ever. Where is the big idea, or even small idea, in nay of these songs> all generic stuff. No humour. No zing. No quirk. Nothing.

  12. The song has some melody and the simplicity reminds of those old college songs.

  13. This movie is looking bad with each subsequent trailer. Mostly because of Arjun Kapoor. Looks like it’ll end up in the Imran Khan romcom range of 40-50 crores.

  14. This ape is totally mismatched here and doesn’t deserve to be allowed anywhere near Alia bhatt (who should be attending classes!)

Ps: watched bits of viral kohli–
Like how he plays so late and close to the pitch of the ball even in a t20 match… Finally, tendulkars record seems in reach…(if only he can keep his head (& d..k) under control)

  15. I am beginning to like the awkwardness of Arjun Kapoor. He and alia are beginning to look right for the part. Love the song Offo . I think it might turn out decent enough after all.

Looking forward to ‘2 States’ – should be seeing it tomorrow or Saturday. After my initial reservation about Arjun Kapoor I have begun to warm up to him in the film. His grunge laid back look lends it the right amount of vulnerability to bring out the thing he has with his father. Alia of course is fab. I like some of the songs too. And I must confess I have like Chetan Bhagat from the day i read Five Point Someone. His writing has become progressively worse, but there is something about him, still.
Let me list the five things that I like about Chetan Bhagat.
    1. He writes about the strata of society that reads his books: the middle-class. Engineers. MBas. People working in call centers. Students preparing for IIT.
    2. He largely writes about the world he knows. ( His best two boks are the ones based on his own life: Five point someone. 2 States.
    3. His books are breezy and sunny. His plotting is school boyish. He is the closest to a PG Wodehouse kind of author you will find in Indian English. A predilection towards filmy melodrama is spoiling this attitude in books like Revolution 2020. But it is quite fine in Five point Someone and 2 States.
    4. 4. He writes sex well. Sex in his books appear naturally. He writes sex without awakardmness or guilt, without titillating or eroticizing.
    5. Through all the melodrama, all the school boyish jokes, he manages to etch out a few genuine relationships. His books do have soul…even if buried most pf the time under a big heap of bad writing.

    • Hail utkal uncle: I learn so much from u (not joking)
And y this ‘sudden change of heart’?
Is it the ultrashort shorts of Alia ? C’mon uncle leave the kid alone…lol
As for this film–it’s a kjo & sajid nadiadwala production of a cretin bhagats novel–that should spell multiplex cash (with or without the upgraded abhishrek ie arjun kapoor!)
All the best Alia bhatt..(man I’m becoming her ‘fan’)…
Ps: just read somewhere –the kiddo Alia says–“it’s most difficult to not act”–hmm…

  18. The reviews of this movie are very good…I am quite surprised as I thought this will be a candy floss kinds KJo movie. But from the reviews it seems to be a very unlike KJO kind of movie…and quite real….This is opening big tomorrow so if it turns out to be good 100 crores cannot be ruled out.
