    A few days ago, the makers of Aamir Khan’s film P.K. announced the release date of the most-awaited film of the year, which has been advanced to December 19, 2014. Producer Firoz Nadiadwala’s Welcome Back was to release on December 19 but after Aamir Khan announced the release of P.K. on that date, the unit of Welcome Back are in a dilemma.

    Director Anees Bazmee reveals, “We had advanced our release date to December 19 because Bombay Velvet and P.K.

    Seeing the reviews of Hawa Hawaii, I am cautiously beginning to wonder if “Tare Zammen Par” was more an Amole Gupte movie than an Aamir Khan movie ?

    Did Aamir Khan bring with him an audience or did Aamir Khan hijack Amole Gupte’s labour of love ?

    Honestly, I ask these questions without having an answer. I do feel that Tare Zameen Par did not just smack of Aamir’s polish BUT had the sincerity of Amole.

    I think I ask this question mainly because at the time of Tare Zameen Par, I did not give Amole the benefit of the doubt. Hence perhaps this question is merely a manifestation of my guilt.

    I wonder if others too have a similar guilt or a similar question (could be any reason) ?

    • how many times aamir has publically clarified this. He was not happy with amol’s version of few days’ direction – so he politely asked him to stop and take his project elsewhere. Amol awas adamant that he wanted to make the film with aamir as producer so aamir took over and kept amol on the set throughout. Because it went to be a superhit – Amol cried foul…….

    Satyam–the amusing ‘meltdown’

    From ‘enthralling’ readers with his analytical pieces & box office dissection to slowly getting ‘defensive’ to stopping box office predictions/ to some box office ‘fiascos’ to ‘trendgate’, the ‘descent’ is becoming too obvious
    Lately he’s adopting a sort of KHAP ‘village elder role’ ..
    And gradually culminating into a ‘recluse’.

    • The ART OF RUNNING Onscreen (Bollywood)

      Another of my random quirky posts, incited by my recent running (exercises) for a marathon.

      Have always felt that ‘running’ onscreen esp by the ‘hero’ is as common as black stains in a coalmine. But in my humble opinion, v few actually do it right –in the ‘impactful’ coherent manner ie like a ‘hero’ should!!
      surprisingly there are many macho action stars who are omitted here (deliberately). Some like Akshay were fine but not really there (forget the midget khans)

      The ones who make my list–the big three…

      1) Amitabh Bachchan

      In agneepath one remembers the busy fish market scene where bachchan darts ahead with a knife in hand or even as late as in akayla to get the bomb before it blows the plane–couldn’t find em-if anybody finds them-plz post.
      Surprisingly it was towards his ‘autumnal’ phase as a lead hero that this ‘running’ really kicked in
      He remains the definitive standard


      2) Hritik Roshan
      He completely owns the superhero space atleast in Bollywood and dare I say, in that genre is as good as any Hollywood counterpart like to like
      An eg is the krish 3 introduction scene or the one in krish 2, where he competes with a bloody horse (& wins!)

      3) Sunjay Dutt
      Be it the attempted run from the police in Naam or khalnayak, Dutts up there.

      Honourable mentions

      Ranveer Singh
      In Gunday, there’s a scene when the ‘gundays’ get surrounded by the police. All they can do is wait for a train & hope to escape on it. Then there’s a two second pause wherein they look at each other before embarking towards it (running!)
      After that brief dash, I knew Bollywood may have got a new superstar

      Sid Malhotra
      He’s a poor dancer & an outsider in Bollywood. Haven’t seen much of him. But he has potential. And saw in some clip–he can ‘run’ …

      But the definitive remains the twin visuals of amitabh running in akayla-agneepath..

        Priyanka Chopra & Deepika Padukone Are Ranveer’s Leading Ladies In ‘Bajirao Mastani’

        Ever since the news of the ever flamboyant Ranveer Singh playing Bajirao in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus broke, there were speculations about who plays the Mastani and the Peshwa’s wife.

        Confirming the cast and spilling the beans on this much talked about project, Ranveer divulged that his Gunday co-star Priyanka Chopra plays his wife in Bajirao Mastani. The excited actor also confirmed on his alleged girlfriend Deepika Padukone bagging the role of Mastani.

        In a recent interview, the actor stated that Bajirao Mastani will overshadow Ram Leela and make it seem like a ‘warm up’. Currently leaving for the shoot of Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, which kicks off at Europe, the actor will be on a cruise for a month. Interestingly, actress Priyanka Chopra plays his sister in this film.

        While there were rumors that the actor had to choose between Karan Malhotra’s Shuddhi and Bhansali’s historic drama, Ranveer cleared the airs and denied Shuddhi being offered to him.

    • Hawaa Hawaai And Mastram Show Growth Over Weekend

      Hawaa Hawaai and Mastram managed a good pick up over the weekend as both film showed good growth on Saturday but overall collections remained low due to the dull starts. The weeekend collections of Hawaa Hawaai were double of Stanley Ka Dabba a similar film. Koyelaanchal the other film to get some collections on Friday did not grow much. The approx collections of the releases were as follows.
      Hawaa Hawaai – 3.50 crore nett
      Mastram 2 crore nett
      Koyelaanchal 1.25 crore nett

      The other three releases had very low collections with all three not managing to cross 50 lakh nett for the weekend. The collections of Yeh Hai Bakrapur were better than Manjunath and Khwaabb.

      2 States grossed 3-3.25 crore nett in its fourth weekend taking its total to 96.50 crore nett in 24 days. The weekly business of the film till date is as follows
      Week One – 58,45,00,000
      Week Two – 24,84,00,000
      Week Three – 10,04,00,000
      Week Four – 3,15,00,000 (3 Days)
      TOTAL – 96,48,00,000

      2 States will finish over 98 crore nett at the end of its fourth week and should then crawl to a little over a 100 crore nett. The film has now crossed 30 crore nett in Mumbai and Delhi/UP is 19 crore nett. East Punjab is an underperformer despite being multiplex circuit with around 8 crore nett but Mysore is excellent with similar figures to East Punjab.

The No. 1 movie in the United States and Canada over the weekend was “Neighbors,” an R-rated comedy that rode strong reviews and a well-oiled marketing campaign to an astounding $51.1 million in ticket sales, trampling “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

    “Neighbors” (Universal Pictures), which cost just $18 million to make and had been expected take in roughly $35 million, likely benefited from pent-up demand for crude laughs. The major studios have not released an original R-rated comedy since last August. Starring Seth Rogan, Rose Byrne and Zac Effron and recalling the 1980s-era “Revenge of the Nerds” movies, “Neighbors” also exploited what has been an overlooked corner of studio filmmaking in recent years: the fraternity picture.

    “Spider-Man” (Sony) fell a steep 59 percent in its second weekend, taking in an estimated $37.2 million, for a two-week domestic total of $147.9 million — by far the lowest 14-day North American total in the webslinger’s five-film history. The superhero has also typically repeated as No. 1 in its second weekend. “Spider-Man,” which cost at least $250 million to make, not including marketing, has now taken in about $550 million worldwide, a total Sony described as “exceeding our goals.” Third place went to “The Other Woman” (20th Century Fox), which generated $9.3 million in ticket sales, for a three-week total of $61.7 million.

    Also of note: “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return” (Clarius Entertainment), a poorly reviewed animated musical that cost a reported $70 million to make, bombed badly, taking in $3.7 million

  12. Satyam, GF, Chipguy, Q and others: The Drishyam dvd/bluray is out with subs. Please check it out. Though in all honesty I found the film underwhelming. The mystery portion is definitely engaging (and inspite of having read the Japanese novel, “Devotion of Suspect X”, the ‘reveals’ still work precisely because they are not always as the same as the ones in the novel. Jeethu Joseph has done the ‘lifting’ very astutely and this isn’t a simple straightforward case of ‘plagiarism’ as some morons in the media are saying). The one major problem I had with the film though was that it is poorly shot at times- I was actually reminded of those telefilms which used to come on DD when I was young. And I have seen the director’s Memories which was far better on this score (infact something like Mumbai Police had really strong visuals). Mohanlal is just about good here (though he is an incredibly ‘natural’ actor, even here he does these things like setting his lungi/mundu right but without calling any attention towards it) and the little I have seen of him I think I preferred him both in Iruvar (where I found him majestic) as well as in Company to his outing here (the only other films I have seen of his are his very recent ones- Spirit, Grandmaster, Run Baby Run- and he is nothing special here. But then Bachchan too wasn’t great in Lal Baadshah and Kyun Ho Gaya Na!). Now I have seen some markedly better films of Mammootty (Pranchiyettan and the Saint, Paleri Manikyam, Kutty Srank and Pazhassi Raja- I enjoyed all of them especially the first and the third film. And Mammootty is brilliant in each one of them. Heck, I even liked him in Immanuel) unlike some middling affauirs of Mohanlal so this is certainly not a fair comparison by any means, but even leaving aside the ‘acting’ comparison, for me the ‘star’ in Mammootty has shone brighter. I think Mammootty has become my favourite Indian star-actor after Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt

    • Also it’s high time someone does a proper profile on Fahadh Faasil. I don’t think I have come across any other star-actor in India who has played the un-hero characters with this consistency. In fact it looks there is some stubbornness on his part as far as playing the traditional hero (haven’t yet seen a film of his like that) And to top it all in a career, which is still in a fledgling stage, he has been part of some really good films (among the ones I have seen of his I have loved Annayum Rasoolum, Artist, Amen, North 24 Kaatham and Kerala Cafe. The other ones I have somewhat liked are Akam, Chappa Kurishu, Diamond Necklace, Natholi Oru Cheriya Meenalla, Friday and 5 Sundarikal. Didn’t like 22 Female Kottayam, but he was a scene-stealer here as well as in Immanuel). The most startling thing here is that more than 75% films of his have been commercial successes inspite of the fact that they can’t be bracketed into the category of safe, commercial ventures. Fahadh has become one of those very few actors whom I enjoy watching irrespective of the quality of the film (though in all honesty, I am yet to see him in a bad film. That will be his real test). He always manages to surprises me.

      Also Prithviraj isn’t a half-bad actor either. He has got some real authentic presence. And it’s visible even in Aurangzeb where he runs rings around poor Arjun Kapoor.

        Saurabh, thanks for the info. I will definitely look for the Drishyam DVD- have been wanting to catch this one. On Mammootty, the films you mentioned are really good ones, but on the whole I certainly lean toward Mohanlal. He hasn’t had anything I’d praise recently though, so you’d really have to go back to the 80s and 90s to find the movies that speak to his capability. Fully agree on Fahadh- he’s come out of nowhere to become a very capable actor and he’s one of the few reasons I continue to watch contemporary Malayalam cinema.

This continues to be one of my very favorite films of the last few years and since I thought a lot of the charm was in the peculiarities of the dialect and location, I’d be interested in seeing how that came across to someone unfamiliar with the language.

    Terrence Malick’s ‘Voyage of Time’ Will Be Completed By 2016; Worldwide IMAX Release Planned

    “While it sounds like the finishing touches are being put on at least one of two recently shot dramas from director Terrence Malick, today brings a welcome update on one of his longest-gestating projects. Announced at the Cannes market, Wild Bunch and Sophisticated Films have teamed to start selling international rights to Malick’s ambitious documentary Voyage of Time.

    The first images will be shown to buyers at the festival, Variety reports, and although they’ll stay hidden from the public it’s confirmed that project will finally be completed by 2016. While we’ve already publicized in detail what the project contains, the official logline reads that it’s “a celebration of the earth, displaying the whole of time, from the birth of the universe to its final collapse” and that it “examines all that went to prepare the miracle that stands before us now. After the nebulae and supernovae, after the lands of lava and smoke, after the elaboration of the first cells, first fish, first amphibians and reptiles, this great wonder!”

    With talks to release the 40-minute large-format version in worldwide IMAX theaters, there’s also the feature-length version which will take a more poetic approach to the material, as one might expect with Malick. “Using words and music, we are encouraged to view the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet with gratitude and awe, in Malick’s most ambitious film to date,” the producers added. They said, “This story deals with the biggest questions in life, which touch all of us in an emotional, beautiful and awe-inspiring way.” With voice-over from Brad Pitt, we certainly can’t wait for this one, so check back for more updates as they arrive.”

  18. To get on to the other ‘monster’ that came out on May 16 (following Rohan Sippy’s mischievous tweet!) I had a lot of fun with Godzilla. Worth checking out.

    • I too enjoyed it, but mainly for the sheer artistic mayhem on screen than anything else (really liked the fact that they introduced Godzilla rather late into the running time. Also the set-pieces were very nicely done), but the human drama, apart from the Cranston-Binoche bit, didn’t work for me at all. That being said, I still can’t figure out how this is getting better review overall than Pacific Rim and Elysium.

      BTW I will hugely recommend Snowpiercer when it comes out in the theatres. I found it excellent and almost to the other fine Korean blockbuster The Host. I saw the original longer cut (downloaded it from the net a couple of months back) and I think this cut will also be playing at some places in the US as well. But really hugely recommended, from the last year blockbuster releases, I will only have Gravity above this.

    Guillermo del Toro mixes Michael Bay with some emotion & intelligence.
    Just checked this out–enjoyed it more than I expected.
    Charlie Hunnam & Rinko were good.
    the kid in me loved the Kaiju v Jaeger duels 🙂

    Maybe more on this soon–
    I’ve esp liked the theme track–Which sounds EPIC…
