MASSIVE MODI VICTORY

  1. I’ll take some solace from TN and Kerala. In the former the AIADMK did massively well (even if I’m not a Jayalalitha supporter). In Kerala Tharoor finally won after trailing. So the the BJP has maintained its record of never winning in Kerala.

And of course there’s W Bengal where Trinamool has done massively well. The BJP though looks to be winning some at the expense of the Congress and the CPI(M).

    • Jayalalitha had had what is possibly the largest victory ever in TN with DMK at 0 seats! AIADMK is now the third-largest party nationally. She wont’ have much power at the centre since Modi doesn’t need to form a coalition but nevertheless, a very remarkable achievement.

      u.p,bihar,m.p,chattisgarh, gujrat,himachal,jammu,rajasthan, uttrakhand,jharkhand,delhi etc is total sweep…

win in orissa, assam and arunachal is refereshing and so increased vote share in north east

      • they haven’t opened an account yet in kerala because Tharoor after trailing for a while eventually won.

In terms of vote share they’ve increased their share considerably in W Bengal, at the expense of the CPI (M) and the Congress but in terms of seats they still only have a couple or something. Trinamool might be winning as many as 34 out of 42. Nonetheless the BJP % has gone up here.

it’s not significant in TN or Kerala though. A percentage jump of a few points but really not significant at all given the larger trends in both states.

Karnataka and Andhra are not exactly surprises for more than one reason.

        • not really because they always did much better in Karnataka. Andhra with the whole Telengana issue (and the TDP alliance) was differently configured anyway. not winning a single seat in kerala in the midst of this huge national wave means something! As does the TN result where despite having a coalition of 6 parties they were completely swept. In fact Jayalalitha has come up with the equivalent of the Modi wave in TN. As for increase in vote share if you go from 6% to 10% because the opposition in those states does very poorly in a historic election that hardly indicates some march to victory in the future! In Bengal though they’ve gone from 6% to 16% or something. That’s very significant but again the Congress and the CPI (M) were expected to do poorly. Still it means something for assembly elections (though people don’t necessarily vote the same way in both). With Kerala and TN though they really have nothing to show.

Hey who’s counting seats! never saw anyone so sour with their side winning so big! But I’m not surprised. You have always displayed this kind of totalitarian instinct. Modi has already won huge. You don’t need to read signs of future BJP greatness in the Kerala and TN results! Not winning anything is the same as winning big according to you because what one hasn’t won today one will in the future despite no such evidence in the results! And of course there’s the usual naiveté in your position. The assumption that this Modi wave is forever and they’ll just keep winning in state after state. LOL! Again.. enjoy the win. You don’t have to go ‘crazy’ with it.

I’ll put it this way — in ‘God’s Country’ there is still no room for Modi! Three cheers for that!

  3. Bandra NRI said this most recently in a different context but there’s always this refrain of ‘we must respect the wishes of the people’. Why?

First off the people who want these wishes respected were mysteriously not doing the same when Sonia was in power. Then there was this constant snideness about the ‘Italian’ and dynasties and what not. Why weren’t those wishes respected in this instance? Presumably the people knew about the Italian connection and the dynastic one!

But secondly given the questionable choices majorities often make in just about every democracy from time to time, given how people have elected some truly monstrous figures in different places, the idea that a decision must be respected simply because it comes from a majority is absurd. This is the secret religion of every democracy.

As an aside I’ll add that I also don’t respect majorities when they make houseful a hit or do the same with certain SRK films and so on!

On my part I regard it as a day of national disgrace. But I nonetheless congratulate all those here who were supporting Modi.

On the national disgrace though I actually do find it to be such when such people are elected. Might have said the same thing when Hitler was elected had I been around! And the same in many other instances past or present. I don’t change my mind about fascists because they win elections. nor am I persuaded even if they ‘behave well’ beyond a point.

But I’m sure you loved this majority as much when the Congress came in with Sonia and Rahul!

Satyam, you might find yourself in a fringe minority with your views now, because this type of mandate could not have been achieved unless many naysayers willingly gave him their vote. Clearly, even Minorities and non-BJP supporting castes were so frustrated with the Congress that they willingly supported Modi. Nothing else can explain a 72 seat sweep in UP.
The scale of this victory also puts a lot of pressure on the BJP. Now they have to get something done, otherwise they too will be kaput in 5 yrs. Modi will have to deliver and cause a huge rising tide to lift all boats, irrespective of caste or religion.

        • But you can’t say you’re with a majority only when it crosses a certain threshold. That’s like saying you are with a US president only if he wins at least 350 electoral college votes! As for the Congress my argument even yesterday (if you recall) was that they’ve long been quite dead in certain ways, whether they win or lose.

And given the ways majorities sometimes vote, not only in India, it is far more respectable to be in a fringe minority! But agree on the rest of what you’re saying though remember that in a parliamentary system relatively small shifts in the electorate can lead to big numbers for one party or another. Which doesn’t mean there aren’t significant shifts in these elections. Just that unlike a president system it’s often not directly proportionate or symmetric in this sense. Much as in the US because of the Electoral College there’s a dissymmetry built into the system. Whether you win a state by 1 vote or a million you still get all the Electoral College votes for that state. This can lead to a landslide but the actual numbers are not that overwhelming. The US though is an anomaly in this sense. But in parliamentary systems this disproportion always obtains. Again this doesn’t take away anything from the massive win here but one can sometimes talk as if this distinction does not exist.

That’s harsh in a way as the mandate is for Big Change, Development and simply Pro Business. I don’t think there are any other strings attached to these results. The hardcore BJP/ upper middle class type always favored and voted BJP.

But this time around people are hurting on grass root levels but more importantly there was no one to listen to. Rahul and Congress already seemed fed up with the unexpectedly long 10 year rule. Rahul is more into Colombian girlfriend & wants his foreign vacations then sit and learn the basic of Indian politics which Rajiv was keen and eager to learn. Congress had this coming since they did not even try to project the right people for governance and not a single administrator apart from Sonia who is also not fully fit and undergoing various treatments and therapies. Ideally Gandhi family should have stepped aside and let someone else take the reins but it is bankrupt of any ideas/ directions and made a mockery of Manmohan Singh too who at least stabilized India in financial terms. Diggi was busy with his affair with Amrita Rai and rest simply had no say. This is when AAP and Kejriwal and Anna gained prominence. Come to think of it BJP until a year back was all over the place with constant infightings and bickering until Modi found the right opening and jumped in….

The past of Modi did not matter to anyone since when it comes to rozi roti everything else takes a back seat. A vast majority has bought into this Gujarat development model and wants the same model replicated in their state too. But as I had posted in a long comment earlier Gujarat due to its strategic location and shipping activity/ hub is a different ballgame. That’s why Modi’s work becomes harder from now esp in UP and Bihar. He does have a Chanakya Amit Shah who will play the game for him like he did during elections.

It’s simple if you act in UP/Bihar you are bound to trample a lot of corrupt bureaucrats / highly placed officials and the local politicians who can then create havoc. And if you tom tom with them then basically all remains same. So I am going to judge Modi simply with his performance in UP/Bihar. (At the time of writing this he is headed to get 73 out of 80 seats in UP!!!) But if he sides with unruly elements then it will be hugely detrimental and things will remain same…. For minorities esp the Muslims this is a good sign and they should feel safer as Modi under international radar is going to be more conscious than otherwise. This change was seen with hawkish elements like Advani etc when BJP came to power in ’97.

All in all good results and happy that a clear majority has been given to one party and it shows public wants to back a tough / stern administrator.

I completely agree with this. The problem though is that in many countries in similar circumstances people vote for the very same things. Even the worst fascists come to power promising the same stuff and the middle classes if you will voting on the same things. The ultimate example is Hitler here who too promised progress and a rescue from the 20s malaise and so forth. And even delivered on all these fronts for a while. Most who voted for him didn’t do so because he was anti-Jewish. But as always the dark side of the ‘bourgeois’ mindset is that it will sacrifice any and every principle in the pursuit of economic prosperity and a bit of general security. here I never buy into the ‘naiveté’ of these same classes. So again with the Hitler example they might not have voted on this score but they certainly didn’t mind the anti-Jewish message. Similarly in other situations if you’ve not been the one affected by violence it’s naturally not uppermost in your mind. And to the extent you’re bothered by it you can always invent justifications.

adodara: Amul, Asia’s biggest milk brand is ready to set up its plant in Varanasi.

Notably, Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is contesting in Lok Sabha Elections from the city of temples.

Banas Dairy, which markets Amul, will be setting up the processing plant in Varanasi. The plant will have the capacity to process at least 5 lakh litres of milk every day and the production will be doubled later depending on the demand.

According to a report published in TOI, Banas Dairy will invest Rs. 200 crore for the set up of this plant in holy city.

Chairman Parthi Bhatol told TOI ‘We’ve completed the process with UP State Industrial Development Corporation Ltd for land acquisition at Karkhianv industrial area near Varanasi airport.’

Notably, the work regarding the set up of plant in Kanpur and Lucknow is also started after Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav provided 40 and 20 acres of land in the cities respectively.

Like the plant in Varanasi, these two plants will also have the capacity to process 5 lakh litres of milk per day. Amul will start with milk, curd and buttermilk initially and will later add ice cream and other dairy products to the list.

‘Amul is the most preferred milk brand in all milk markets in UP including Varanasi, which consumes 75,000 litres milk per day. Since Banas Dairy began procuring milk locally in UP based on Amul model of co-operatives, farmers in UP are getting better remuneration for their milk,’ MD Rs. Sodhi of Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation told TOI.

Bhatol said ‘Although UP is India’s largest milk producing state, the share of organized sector was only one lakh litres milk per day while private players were exploiting the farmers.’

    • true.. the great behemoth of Indian democracy with all its issues constitutes a serious challenge to any govt. You of course here the sly excuse on the Right — hey give Modi at least a couple of years to clean up the mess. Maybe any new govt deserves a window but the Indian electorate will certainly only give it uptil the next time (election). And yes it’s quite true that the messaging and now this victory raises the bar a great deal.

of course now that Modi is in power I’d want him to get ‘co-opted’ and ‘mainstreamed’ as soon as possible! Which is what being in power does to most people. But will be interesting to see where he goes. On the one hand he has every interest in not wishing to seem anything but mainstream, he’s not beholden to the BJP apparatus in the same way. The election was more or less a referendum on Congress and vote for Modi. So he has that leeway. On the other hand there are many on the Right who feel they’ve never quite got a shot at things, that with the first BJP govt they got ‘moderate Vajpayee’, that this is now their big moment. They’re not just looking for ‘efficiency’, i.e. the folks in the ideological ranks. This balancing act is a tricky one. The other thing is that sooner or later a crisis comes around and where does Modi turn in such a situation given all his disturbing instincts? it will take time to get the answers to all these questions. Clearly Modi wants to be around for a long time and hence has every interest in not rocking things too much. But again there has to be something that looks ‘new’ under him. Business-as-usual though it might mainstream him won’t be enough to convince folks in other ways.

What kind of laughable logic is this?! Priyanka might belong to corrupt and inefficient party and you can certainly criticise her for that but justifying your comments by saying that she walks barefoot is absurd. What on earth does that have to do with dancing item numbers?!

Why is it then that you Modi Bhakts get so enraged when anybody says something less-than-complimentary about him. Is he not a public figure? f a congress supporter had commented (in such a vacuous and puerile manner) on Modi’s looks all the BJP supporters would have savaged her for being a superficial bimbo.

Or when the media highlights her bravery in breaking away from her SPG cover, running over a pile of bricks so she could go hug a poor bewildered onlooker on the side of the road. It is not me who is being puerile, but her favorite booty-licking media which highlights such trivial stuff in the name of ‘Gandhi Sacrifices’.

Perhaps some like to “Piss on Minorities AND call it raining”.

There is a protocol for such matters. Also a hierarchy (the Federal Government works with leaders at the national level).

When the Visa was refused and a ban was imposed, NaMo was also applying for the title of the “Butcher of Gujrat”. That ban will remain. The Visa now will be issued not to that alleged Butcher but to the PM (auto qualification).

As soon as he goes back to being just another person, he will have to acquire the Visa on his own merit, and will once again face the existing ban.

I just hope that he focuses on his promises of development and anti-corruption and doesn’t succumb to the intolerant/ bigoted fringe within his party.

And I hope that the right-wingers are not too enamoured with him to hold him accountable for fulfilling his lofty promises.

Far from it. I am totally irreverent about all these things. Just the other day I said, that when Modi parks his fat ass on the PM Chair, be assured that it will be stuck to said chair for the next decade at the least. The guy is a total egomaniac and narcissist, full of Me, Mera, Mainey. Mera Chappan inch ka seena!! My foot, his waist is chappan inch. I hate that the he speaks constantly in the third person. In today’s Vadodara speech, he spent like 15mins just congratulating himself for his phenomenal victory. Praising his own hard work, “I am Majdoor Number 1”, etc etc.

All that said, he is also hell bent on building a legacy for himself, and the best way to do so will be through real positive development of the sort he has done in Gujarat. That is the only positive in his persona, ie, he will change the face of India by sheer will and he will exercise his power to the fullest. The people of India have given him a foolproof majority to exercise his will. Somehow, despite his ego and narcissism, he has spectacularly connected with the junta. Maybe because of his aggression, his grueling campaign, and his wits.

          Like

        • OK, apologies, I mischaracterised your political attitude. But I do feel that that his narcissism is almost a necessary attribute to spark the Indian public’s imagination and succeed politically. The Junta want larger-than-life figures, be it in the films or in politics. This is true of most of the enduringly successful politicians today: Amma, Didi, Mayawati. Meanwhile the plebeian antics of a Kejriwal are met with utter derision and ridicule. It could also be that his utter self-conviction appeals to the masses after the superlatively timorous Manmohan Singh.

For instance in the UK, when Thatcher started referring to herself in the second person (the imperial ‘we’ as opposed to I) it was believed that she had reached the height of her arrogance. I think the political culture is extremely different in India and such things simply will not be seen of as out of the ordinary or unacceptable, but rather as something that indicates authority/ confidence in a leader.

Also, the refusal to name Modi or BJP in the congratulatory message, at the cost of appearing graceless in defeat, was designed to send out a message that Congress was in no mood to go soft on its biggest enemy, a man with whom it shares bad blood at a personal level. The cold response despite the massive defeat showed that BJP would have faced a gridlock in Parliament had it not managed to win majority in the LS. It, at once, shows that despite a majority in LS, Modi will have to seek out allies among regional parties to tide over the numerical deficit in the upper House.

With a verdict as definitive & unanimous as this, the voting public have spoken. And spoken in favour of Modi. Never been his fan but not been his hater either (from whatever little I know).

Caste, regional & religious politics don’t get u food on the plate, uninterrupted electricity (& internet), jobs and financial foreign investments et al !
This simple realisation seems to have dawned onto the Indian people. While modi may not achieve any of these, he & his machinery were able to sell this ‘dream’ most effectively.

Now let’s not deny / trivialise the very ‘democracy’ one seems to be upholding.
The biggest test is when people pay with their hard -earned cash to watch films on the big screen (& not online/telly etc). Spin & ‘prestige’ falls by the wayside, for ‘intellectuals’ on blogs to mull over.

Here people have voted with their own futures at stake. How can u negate or ignore it. Time to respect that !

As for your point on the USA visa for modi–

As somebody mentioned (think it was Satyam!) that who gets USA visa isn’t a criteria to decide anything
What modi has achieved here by becoming an elected PM (by majority) in a reasonably fair elections is more than what hundreds of USA visas can achieve for ‘NRIs ‘ etc.
So put things into perspective &
Btw ‘hate’ works both ways –question your antagonisms to modi ..& take a chill ‘pill’ gal (no pun intended) lol

The poster/cover is predicting that within the next few decades NaMo will be not just become NoMo, but will also completely disappear from public life.

Finally it has to be said, that the poster/cover does reflect the genuine views of plenty of people (all over the world) looking at this sad & tragic election. I understand you believe Modi is India’s new dawn. I on the other hand believe that this is India’s darkest hour. We don’t see eye to eye.

There are justifiable & valid reasons for a lot of people around the world to believe, like me, that “A Greek Tragedy” is unfolding before our eyes. Your dismissal of these concerns such as your previous statement about “appeasement of minorities” is not politically correct.

I hope you understand that the very liberal policies of the West, which you have been a beneficiary of, is something you would like to deny to minorities in India. I expect you to be understanding as you too have been a minority (in the west). It is sad to see you line up with people who appear so against the human rights of the minorities.

        • I do not understand what the heck is being denied to the minorities?? Does the West allow a parallel Personal Law Board that allows polygamy? Does the West allow a totally autonomous state in a country, where the rest of the country cannot even invest in, cannot buy property in, etc. In effect, a state has been granted to minorities in which they can do as they please! It is hard to fathom what liberties have been denied??
Prosperity is the ultimate aim for every community. No one is denying prosperity to anyone in India. But it just doesn’t fall from a tree and land in one’s lap. Do you think the rest of us just became prosperous over the last 60 yrs just by sitting on our behinds, and crying hoarse, asking for pity?

        • True but where it gets tricky is with the question of how the nation is to be defined. There is always a tension within every nation-state when it comes to these definitions. On the one hand the nation is about whoever is a citizen of that nation. This is a more inclusive, ‘legal’ definition. On the other hand every such nation also has a more restrictive definition of what really constitutes the heart or core of the nation. Which is why there are always minorities. It is a structural necessity of the nation-state. The tribal instinct essentially survives in the latter but of course runs up against all the legal realities of the same. The gap is then covered up by politics. You can then start defining minorities as either those not completely committed to the idea of the nation-state, not patriotic enough therefore, even viruses at the heart of the nation-state weakening it from within. This entire discourse is an old one. Fascists thrive on it but even liberalisms of various kind are often challenged by it. A classic example here is say of a European nation where citizenship rights are spelled out in the most universal ways and these are linked to birth in most cases. But what is not envisaged at that point is the immigrant who will be born on that very same soil and will have the very same legal rights. Because the repressed reality of every nation-state is that more tribal link. Which itself is a fiction of course in more ways than one.

When fascism uses this kind of structural tension to its own advantage the minority can never really win. Because the charges in question are never provable. They acquire popular currency, they circulate anecdotally, over time they start seeming like obvious truths. But they are never more than myths. And what are the frustrations of a majority can be channeled this way. For instance rather than explain the exigencies of globalization to blue collar workers in Detroit it might just be easier to tell them immigrants are taking away their jobs. It’s a profitable myth for a politician (both stripes) but equally it is an easier reality for the voter to handle. Not least because it feeds a pre-existing bias. And this is always the trick in politics. To find a framing that a voter is pre-disposed to agree with. You can do it in the worst possible ways to create a negative politics or do it for more positive outcomes,

This is why anything beyond the legal Definition of citizenship should not be allowed in public discourse.

Not just in India, but throughout the world race & religion has to be pushed back into the private domain. Who you worship in your home (or religious place), who you close to inside your home, your gender etc should not be a public issue.

The state should not be allowed to show preference to any religion. There has to be a complete seperation of “Church & State”.

          Like

        • I agree with you but the problem is that you can’t legislate how people actually think. The ‘right-wing’ response or this kind of reactionary politics often comes about precisely because the liberal version of democracy has been written into law. So in India for instance the entire Hindutva response is really to the Nehruvian brand of politics which was the most inclusive kind in the history of the Indian nation-state. But the Right presents it as minority-appeasement and a betrayal of the Hindu essence of India, so on and so forth. Much as the Republicans in the US use a similar language to argue against immigration or militate against what they perceive as a betrayal of America’s Christian legacy etc etc. The terms of the debate are the same, the arguments identical, you just change some names and the formula holds. But all of this is possible because people are willing to accept these myths. If you grew up in a white suburb in Ohio and by the time you reach 50 you see the area turning ‘Hispanic’ you have a problem. Now you don’t think of yourself as a racist, you feel you too don’t have those attitudes but a lot of things happen at a much more instinctive level. And so then when you get a Republican party speaking to those same anxieties or attitudes in code you are very receptive to that message. Again this isn’t something you can legislate against. Of course the irony is that many Indians who support Modi or many Islamist-types or whatever suddenly demand the fullest freedoms and liberals guarantees in the West and are the most indignant when the detect the slightest bias in any sense. You can’t be one thing when you have the comfort of being in a majority back home and another thing when you’re in a minority. And the argument always is that the situations are different. Yeah right!

It’s an increasing common complaint amongst the right-wing in the UK (decreasing celebration of traditional Christian festivals and increasing visibility to minority festivals).

“Celebrating Diwali but possibly not doing a nativity play at Christmas.

My daughter attands a welsh medium school. Last year however, a Nativity was deemed not respectful to a multi cultural school and they did some play which was about delivering presents from around the world, no real mention of Jesus and not very festive, my daughter was dressed as an australian surfer!

My daughter came home yesterday with a card saying Happy Diwali, which I was a bit shocked about, I’ve been told that this year the school may not be doing a traditional nativity play again. There are by the way a very small group of hindu children less than 5 in a 140+ school.

Now I want to see my daughter take part in a traditional nativity play this year and so do other parents but the decision is being made by the head mistress, but it seems a bit one sided regarding these cultures in our school.

They dont want to do a Christian nativity play, but all children were making Diwali cards, without any questions as to whether we want our children to learn about Diwali, all seems a bit one sided to me, and not very fair on the majority of the school.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, and also do you think I should approach the head mistress about it?”

    • IMO, the liberals in USA/UK are doing exactly what liberals in India are, ie, to stick a thorn in the side of the majority religion.
So for them, it is communal and a violation of church-state separation when a Christian openly displays his Christianity. But it is liberal/secular to support a minority who brazenly propagates their religion. Btw, I rarely see Hindus in the US/UK making some hue-n-cry over oppression of any rights. I do see some fringe idiots trying to make an issue out of trivial stuff, like when Selena Gomez wore a Bindi for a song.
Being a Hindu, I care a hoot about whether Obama goes to Church or not, or if my daughter is taught a Christian prayer at school. I too studied in a Catholic school, and despite all attempts by the HeadMaster and teachers to propagate Catholicism, there were hardly any takers. I guess it is because amongst Hindus, the impoverished and oppressed (ie mostly Dalits/SCs) were the only people who are smitten for conversion. By and large Hindus have never attempted to proselytize, so they also are not bothered about whether Diwali gets celebrated in schools. Recently, however, when we see other minorities getting special privileges, questions are asked by us. eg when the New York mayor declared holidays for Eid and Chinese New Years, but not for Diwali.

So much of the right-wing in India ( not referring you specifically) seem to think that liberals are all Missionaries/ Mullahs, which can’t be further from the truth! It’s not about a specific religion, it’s about the minority vs, majority, whether that minority happens to be Hindu, Muslim or Christian.

It is quite silly to accuse anyone who is liberal of being an Islamist/ Missionary/ Communis and it is certainly not that minorities are oppressed elsewhere and elevated to a pedestal in India alone, or that Hinduism alone is criticised by liberals across the world.

        • Well, liberalism only exists in open democracies. Russia/China/IslamicCountries, much of Africa etc do not entertain any liberals. So it boils down to 2 societies with liberals: the Christian West and Hindu India. And there is only one common vocal minority in both places. The liberals in both places continue to vehemently fight for the same minority religion, ie Islam.
Hindus in the US hardly need any help for any fight, most of them are too prosperous to even bother about all this. IMO, the only time Sikhs protest is when they are not accepted due to their requirements to keep beards and turbans. Other than that, even Sikhs hardly proselytize.

        • Liberals fight for the rights of all religious minorities, not only Muslims. Whether the minority is vociferous or not, is a different matter. For instance, no liberal in India is going to have one standard for Christians and another for Muslims. The same applies to Muslims and Hindus in the West. The increased profile of Hindu festivals like Diwali in the UK, for instance, is a result of liberal efforts.

In a nutshell, The liberals in the west are merely trying to make the “majority” aware that they have no special claims on the land. In the eyes of the law, all are equal, and hence all should also get equal benefits. No one is entitled to special treatment at the expense of the other.

In essense the very need of the law is to protect the rights of the minorities from being trampled or from being taken for granted by the majority.

Just like the very need of the labor unions was to protect the weak from being taken advantage of by the strong.

But it appears your singular obsession with Islam colors & distorts your opinions on all issues. I hope you someday get it that it is not about Islam or any one religion, but a higher moral principal. Hence stop scapegoating and realize that it is a sickness to wish less for others while wanting much more for your own self.

You keep trying to attribute these falsehoods on anyone who does not agree with your viewpoint. I do not wish any less rights for anyone that is in a minority. Heck, I am in a minority in the US, but I have never had to complain. I worked my butt off, did well, and prospered. Dude, I was working on $4/hr jobs when I came to the US in the early 90s. Minimum Effing Wages!!. But I educated myself, learnt, applied and progressed. And yet I see people on minimum wages go blow their wages on beer/cigs every evening and then turn around and complain.
Nothing I can ever complain about. Yes, I did face racism many times, I was even asked to convert (ie Baptized) by a Project Manager in Dallas (in an IT company of all places!!). Migratory H1B desis in the south used to be a prime target of the Southern Methodists in the 90s. But who gives an effing hoot to the majority religion. I showed him my middle finger, and he could not do a thing, cause he needed my programming skillset.

US takes the weak & the tired from all over the world, and gives them an opportunity and a platform to rise and shine. Hence, stop hogging all the credit for yourself, you, a minority, benefited from the liberal policies of this country.

Now if you allow similar openness and freedom in India then maybe others too, minorities in India, can similarly rise and shine. Trust me everyone is better off in free & fair, open system, and you know that first hand. Think where you would have been if you had found all door in US closed.

Hence, be grateful, pay back the debt you owe to liberalism by opening the doors for others.

If you are born in certain places in India and in certain castes no amount of ‘trying’ will get you to that position. If you are born in many inner cities you can certainly be successful but the odds of doing that are almost like winning a lottery. Now within other classes what you’re saying is to a great extent applicable. But not everywhere. If you’re living in Congo how many things can you really try out in life?

Except that in your zeal, you replaced ‘capitalist’ with ‘liberal’! As in, it was the ‘Capitalism’ and “Capitalist Policies’ of this Great Country which helped me and NOT the misplaced principles you ahere to. No one denies that basic protections such as social security and minimum wage are the absolute requirement of every great society. But effort coupled with risk taking are not given to anyone, a person has to have that ability within to succeed. However, you do not surprise me, cause liberals have claimed everything from having built the internet (Gore) to the more recent about having built the Indian Telecom System (Priyanka). But that was a gud one, for a moment I thought I was living in a socialist utopia, where all I had to do was show up and life’s luxuries would just get showered on me.

          Satyam,
We are not talking about Congo here, we are discussing the US and India, both strong democracies. No one denies the plight of the dalits, but they too have had 60+ yrs of reservations aimed at elevating their status. But if their own messiahs (eg Mayawati, Yadav clans etc) do a disservice to their own people, who is to blame for it? Why do you think Modi managed to slice away layers upon layers of the aspirational segments within the lower castes? After all, an educated Dalit also needs opportunity, not the same old obeisance to Mayawati in return for nothing.
I also admit that the Indian system still needs to provide for basic protections (minm wage, social sec, etc). But if the revered Congress starts saying that Rs12/day will provide nutritious food to Indians, where the heck do u think any reform will come from? I am all for setting $1/hour of minm wage in India. Heck, we shud be able to at least manage 50cents/hr, it will be less than one-tenth of the US. But when the messiahs of socialism in India do not think of any such floors, who the heck is to blame?

Important as these policies have been in many ways and incredible as some of the political emancipation has been for these castes in a relatively short period of time you still need a lot more time.

In all these ‘debates’ one of the things that always sadly clear to me is the degree to which people still have such a weak, even impoverished sense of so much Indian contemporary reality and history. There are people in India who’ve voted in a few elections but who’ve never seen a train. Think about what that means. We have an extraordinarily poor sense of what caste means, what all the relevant histories are, what kind of institution it has been. So on and so forth. And this is just one area though the crucial one at many levels.

I’m afraid I can’t subscribe to this paradigm whereby the lower caste politicians are always those taking their folks for a ride and somehow responsible for their continued immiseration and not playing by the normal rules that all other politicians have to submit to. There is a certain kind of biased discourse that crops up here which renders lower caste politics in completely ‘primitive’ terms.

Sure US is a capitalist country, the infrastructure is capitalistic. But the mindset of the people that control & manage this infrastructure is liberal. This is the open mindset that allowed you entrance, and then gave you an opportunity to “rise & shine”. AND TO THIS LIBERAL vales you owe a debt.

Won’t you in return offer the same open mindset to the minorities in India ? Without the embrace of this openness by the US, your hard work & tenacity would have amounted to nothing. Do you not see that you are in essence condemning the minorities of India to a life of nothing by closing your mind & heart to them ? Is that what you want ?

When you became successful, US and the world also gained from that success. Think how much India and the world will gain if we, learning from our collective experience in US, now do the required for the minorities in India. We have the Rosetta Stone, the road map to turn India into another US. But in order to get there we need to free our minds from hate and prejudice.

        • This is the most glibly ignorant statement I’ve heard. India is a ‘vibrant democracy’ where the disadvantaged can easily find success through hard work? Please! On most development statistics, India is far closer to Congo than to any Western democracy!

Do you really feel that the overwhelming majority of this country who are severely disdvantaged in so many ways: the illiterate (quarter of the population and nearly half of women), the starving children (around one in every three), the millions of sexually trafficked women etc do not succeed because of lack of hard work and spending money on beer and cigarettes?

Do you really think that all the farmers who commit suicide, all the mothers who die in childbirth due to lack of medical care and all the girls who are murdered as infants had a chance to succeed in this supposedly vibrant democracy?

Do you really believe that all the agricultural labourers, domestic help and construction workers who toil everyday for pitifully low wages are any less hardworking that successful IT professionals in the USA?!

For the middle and upper class to ignore the rights of the disadvantaged in India is to ignore the majority, NOT the minority. To ignore the fact that India has some of the world’s very worst social and economic indicators (on a per capita basis) and to blindly strive to ‘compete’ (on the most superficial terms) with advanced, industrialized, Western nations that are eons ahead in terms on holistic development is incredibly delusional and jingoistic.

P.S. This comment has nothing to do with the politics of Modi, but rather the aspirations of educated Indians who seem so determined to ignore the overwhelming evidence that it is absurd to class India in the same category as the USA and to pretend that a similar degree of socio-economic mobility exists, where anyone can elevate themselves merely by their own efforts.

        • I’ve long felt this and this was one of the reasons I was always so resistant to SRK’s iconic cinema or even many multiplex genres otherwise. The ‘new Indian’ mindset has always been symptomatic of this flight from history. Not that previous generations in the same classes were somehow more connected with other Indian realities but this paradigm of consumption has produced the ‘generation-in-a-hurry’. Now to some extent this is a global model (entrepreneurship and the like) but the assumptions of advanced liberal democracies are not as operative in India for obvious reasons. However there is a class of newly empowered folks, the ‘multiplex classes’ as I like to call them, who can nonetheless maintain a certain kind of parity with their Western counterparts or what have you. They often have the economic tools and they rarely bare the brunt of the political or institutional brutalities of the system. Hence they can very easily build a bridge in their minds between their own lives and those elsewhere in similar situations. But this comes about partly by evading ‘old India’. Not simply by ignoring it (this is something their predecessors would have done too) but by re-defining it as the atavistic or that which must be overcome and if this is not possible left behind in this march toward capitalist consumption which also goes by the name of globalization. Of course it is also true that the very same movement obtains in the West. In other words to maintain the ‘West’ you need those inhuman factories in Bangladesh or Mexico or wherever, you need the atrocities prevalent in the Congo, etc etc. As Zizek routinely points out the Congo is every bit the part of globalization that New York is or that the swanky parts of Shanghai or Bombay are. Once upon a time those work conditions existed in the heart of the West (Manchester). Since then they’ve outsourced to other countries. In this sense ‘rendition’ is the political equivalent of this format. You can’t torture people but your friends elsewhere can and you hide behind the legalistic argument. Similarly you cannot maintain those inhuman conditions anymore but other countries can. The classic example here is Apple where Foxcon in China does a lot of their work on screens and assembling and so on. Customers around the world see the seduction of the iPhone or iPad but not the work conditions of Foxcon. More recently there have been articles about how disgusting work conditions are in Amazon warehouses even in the US. These examples could be endlessly multiplied. The problem isn’t that free markets just need to be spread even more but that free markets precisely create and enable certain precise forms of immiseration. Incidentally this is something that after the last crash is being much more recognized and debated now that it was in the heady 90s. But to get back to the Indian example thew ‘new Indians’ follow this same essential and really ‘religious’ narrative of free markets that will liberate the world. Quite naturally anything then that hinders this ‘corporate’ logic of economics or the multi-nationalization of economics is immediately identified as a threat (not just in India by the way but even in the US or anywhere else). And so from lower caste politics to cinematic subversion of even the minimal kind everything and everyone becomes the enemy. Again this is not just about being unaware of other realities but trying to rewrite them in very programmatic ways. This is where abstractions are even more problematic than usual. There are different kinds of poverty, different kinds of political subjection, different kinds of abjection, so on and so forth. Bangladesh wasn’t a paradise before globalization took over. It is quite clear for example that even with collapsing buildings people would rather take the risk and work in those conditions than not. Because their lives are even worse off without this option. But this doesn’t mean one should simply follow the triumphalist globalization narrative in these matters. Partly for the reason that earlier waves of economic deprivation were also enabled by all kinds of colonialism. It’s like those who argue Africa wasn’t the greatest place in the world before the colonizers showed up. Perhaps (though this question doesn’t have an easy answer) but after colonization the colonizer bears some responsibility for all the re-ordering that came about. In India similarly, and to take another example, there was always caste but the precise structures we live with bear the traces of British mediation (for instance ‘untouchables’ exploded as a class under British rule). But the second reason is that once a certain economic system alters the landscape it makes even the poor more impoverished than before if they don’t get ‘with the program’. And this is not even to get into the shattering of the ‘world’ for so many of these people. If you’re living in Bombay you might have got an upgrade since the 70s if you belong to certain classes. As I’ve said before Amol Palekar got tired of taking the bus! But if you are that farmer somewhere in Madhya Pradesh who has to vacate his land and for the sake of a dam or something and who is then sent off to Rajasthan where he has no experience with the land or the new crops that he has to grow or whatever, if the same farmer in a different situation has to suddenly start working in a factory to survive because the older form of life isn’t available anymore this represents a loss of an entire world for that person. It’s not like migrating from Bombay to New York! Tough as immigration might be in many circumstances and I am hardly insensitive to this. Now some of this is simply about the ‘march of history’ as it were. One day there were cars, horses became obsolete and entire industries and livelihoods connected with the latter disappeared. It was tragic for the people with whom this happened but it couldn’t be said one could have lived with horses forever! We are living through another such age at the moment. Which is why greater vigilance and responsibility are required to work through these problems or at least try to understand them. My point isn’t that one simply shuts the door on this stage of capitalism or something. At the very least this would constitute a long philosophical project (which many are engaged with as we speak). But that there is simply no excuse for this kind of political irresponsibility that Indian’s multiplex generations, easily among the more anti-intellectual or even Philistine in the world, have eagerly embraced. The problem then is a certain complacency that borders on the idiotic but that in any case is politically reprehensible. This is the world of SRK’s cinema. This is really the ‘new Indian’ moment. Behind all the triumphalism and some of the good that undoubtedly came about one has to also balance out the deprivation that resulted in other quarters. We can no longer pretend to be naive about this stuff. Just on India and Indian cities there has been a barrage of works in recent years. That we continue to be so shows a level of bad faith. At a personal level and in political terms. We simply don’t care and we don’t wish to care about what’s happening in India. Then when there’s a Maoist attack of some sort we are horrified. Of course this sort of violence is revolting and must be condemned but perhaps one should also examine what happened to enable this kind of anarchy and violence in the first place.

    • There is another aspect, ie, the acceptance by Hindus of the Western Legal System. The British Raj had already boxed and clipped Hindu Legal Rights to adhere to Western Law. Further, the Hindu Marraige Act was passed to disallow polygamy in Hinduism. Also, there never had been any Hindu Religious Law such as Sharia. So the Hindus already live their lives as Westerners. But Muslims in the East live lives based on Sharia which is different from Western Law. Therefore, much of the issues raised by them in the West also has got to do with their own preference to adhere to Sharia. There were open calls by Muslim clerics in UK to impose Sharia in their towns/ciites. Thus the recent scandal in the UK wrt Muslims segregating the sexes in schools where they had influence. Or the banning of veils in France, or the Swiss banning some mosques etc.
And by and large, liberals in Europe have continued to support the Islamic minority, irrespective of the fact that the Islamic minority is just a different religious right. It is not the majority Christian right, but it indeed is on the Right!! So it is oxymoronic for a true Leftist Liberal to be fighting for this minority.

      • With all due respect Nykavi and it would take too long to flesh this out for which I don’t have the time but of your last 2-3 responses here 95-99% of the claims made are more about myth than reality. I could literally go sentence by sentence. I’ll just offer one example though — check out the work of Ramachandra Guha but the Indian constitution offers many special privileges for Hindu ‘tradition’ and not only Muslims (it does the same for many other groups too). It is true that polygamy is denied to the Hindu (and of course this riles the majority more than anything else! why should the minority be allowed to enjoy more women?!) but there are other privileges they have as well. Also it was the Hindu Right, precisely the people you like who did not want a uniform civil code because they wished to preserve all aspects of Hindu tradition. These debates at the time were long and complex ones, I can’t hope to get into this stuff here but the idea that the Muslim has a special privilege that no one has is myth. It is true in one area not in every other and it is balanced out by other kinds of privileges others have. For instance in many situations the Constitution gives undue deference to panchayat structures and so forth which then are the vessels through which the most repressive traditions are promulgated. There are many such examples. And there are comparable examples even in the West. Again the problem is precisely that myth can occur the value of truth over time. It is incumbent on one to actually read about this stuff and not just further the mythology. But yeah otherwise there are plenty of Republicans in the US who claim it’s disadvantageous to be a Christian in the US! These myths are operative in every democracy. Yes these are largely liberal democracies but if anything the Right has been resurgent over the past 20 years in all of these places. And everywhere they have a version of ‘oh the minority is having too much fun at our [majority] expense’! Anyway have to go now but really it’s disappointing to see such myths being propagated in sentence after sentence. There is to put it bluntly a problem of ‘knowledge’ here.

Christianity is mocked far more widely in popular culture in the West, be it in films (Chocolat), musicals (Book of Mormon) or scathing media comment and satire (every liberal outlet in the West) and symbols such as the cross are presented in all kinds of utterly irreverant contexts. Similarly, Buddha has been appropriated by popular culture the world over in all sorts of situations (ex: Buddha Bar, drug use).

These are MUCH more widespread than Ganesha on potty seats and Lakshmi on flip-flops which are very niche items and hardly a mainstay of popular culture (Indian mythological figures are represented increasingly in the West, but mostly in innocuous contexts such as t-shirt graphics etc). The US has immigrants from innumerable cultures and the festivals of every minority cannot be celebrated on such a large scale, especially when Hindus are not even one of the largest immigrant groups. But on the other hand, in the UK, Hindus form one of the largest immigrant groups and festivals such as Holi and Diwali are very high-profile and celebrated at several schools and universities.

It is only a fringe of one religion, Islam that protests against such representations, and now a fringe of Hindus are seeking to imitate them by protesting against and pulping every perceived ‘threat’ to Hinduism. (The very idea that a religion that has survived several thousands of years could be ‘threatened’ or ‘hurt’ by one pop starlet donning a Bindi or one swimsuit which features an Indian goddess is patently absurd!)

Having said that given the mammoth challenges the framers faced at the time in every sense imaginable some of these ‘compromises’ at various levels seem understandable though I think there should have been a sunset clause of some kind and certainly today all of these should be retired. Except for those dealing with caste or social laws that impact caste issues and so on. Or similarly completely disadvantaged groups on many situations. No Muslim is disadvantaged by not being allowed polygamy! Not that many engage in it anyway. But the problem is that the moment you try to keep certain things in place for caste disadvantages or women in rural communities or whatever the Muslim politicians raise a stink and the whole process is derailed.

I am tired of this fake “Polygamy” preferential crisis. Even in KSA, the percentage of men with multiple wives is decking. Forget India, even in KSA it is hard for an average family to make its end meet.

Hence it is not a norm but more or less an aberration. Focusing on this is merely a diversion. There far bigger and important issues to address. Why waste time and energy on an issue which is so trivial.

If Moslems want it, let them have it. If Hindus also want (for sake of equality) then let them also have it. One way or the other, our busy & expensive lives today has already made this practice rare.

        • NYKavi: Like I said, there is a difference between a legal prescription and ground realities and this statistic illustrates it perfectly. Legally, Muslims might be more ‘privileged’ in that they are allowed polygamy, but in reality it is Hindus who practise it at a higher rate. So IMO bringing up these legal allowances alone is little proof of the alleged special privileges that Muslims enjoy.

Hence given the fact this is statistically an insignificant issue and that it cannot be completely controlled, let’s move on to issues that are rampant, and that can be managed.

Not to take anything away from Modi/ BJP landslide victory, but the background is bit more cluttered than a clinical sweep which seems on paper. Apart from the vote share percentage and timely vote divisions due to prominence of AAP, once we go through the elected list of MPs, there are a bunch of criminals sitting there esp. in UP/Bihar where a lot of chor uchakas rode on the anti incumbency and Modi wave.

Firstly the party should thank AAP which did most of the dirty work in exposing Congress and the big anti corruption uprising among the commoners. Then there was the absolute silence of Manmohan Singh which Kamal Nath rightly said hurt them a lot. From an educated point of view and not jingoistic sloganeering one has to appreciate all the work Manmohan and Montek did for the Indian economy in the last 10 years and steered India through few tough global times. Though the guys is not a regular politician but in this day and age where u talk more and do less he was a misfit for political calculations as far as congress is concerned. Lastly how can one ignore Rahul Gandhi – the single most reason most including me are happy we have an alternative. Even if we let go all the comical satirist approach to his politicking how could anyone take him seriously. He was given a decent mandate in 2009 and the guy did not even take a single position, not a single responsibility in the govt or to do something to serve the people who elected his party. Now either he was holidaying this whole period and ignorant or simply preparing for his exit with the loot taking cut in all the govt deals and building his Swiss account which Manmohan could not stop him.

So this victory is part served on a platter to Modi with just 6/7 months of heavy duty electioneering where all seems to have fallen in place. His real test is governance for next 5 years and how he curbs the ‘chor Indian mentality’ residing in all fields at the moment. But either way he is the most suited man for the post at the moment for India and this change was much needed. His strong personality has power to galvanize the liberals/ secular brigade as meaningful watchdogs and should also serve as wake up call to the minorities to work harder for their rights and not be used simply as vote bank.

However, now that he is PM and he has the full force of India’s security apparatus at his disposal, there can be no excuse if a riot does not get controlled asap. If another Gujarat happens under his watch, I would petition for the govt to be recalled before the 60 months are up.

No one talks about the disproportionate role of Togadia/Sighal and the VHP/Bajrang fringe in these riots. In a perverse twist, the riots and polarization helped him win the 2002 State elections. But past that, he fell out with the same uncontrollable fringe elements which fanned the riots, precisely because he did not want another re-run. No one talks about the fact that by 2004-5 these guys were baying for Modi’s blood, and actively connived to pull him down in the 2007 elections. By then, he had totally sidelined these lunatics, because they kept posing roadblocks in his development mantra. He had more than 200 temples destroyed, just so he could widen highways and efficiently utilize land occupied by these illegal structures. Does any mainstream press talk about that? They will keep harping about Babri, but Modi has been the biggest destroyer of Hindu temples since Aurangzeb!!

Its not like Hindu Kings were doyens of peace, or practitioners of Raj-Dharma, neither were their kingdoms any semblance of Ram-Rajya. Had they been so exalted and ethical, they would not have let the Caste Sytem eat away at the foundations of society. Had they been selfless, they would have all been united, and they would have stopped the Islamic invasion at their doorstep. But clearly, thats now how the script got written. So, it is useless to argue about pre-independence history.
Similarly, at present, it is useless to argue about 2002. Clearly, a democratic process has elected Modi with a thumping win. We just have to accept and move on, and sincerely hope that he indeed does good for the nation. If he does not, he will be kicked out in 2019. Simple.

Hence in your contrived fictional history, Akbar was evil. It helps you to think that because that justifies your current hate. BUT historians (third party) look at India during Akbar’s watch and find no poverty. The British have written that they could not identify one product that they could sell to India (during Akbar’s watch), that was superior or cost less.

But as I said, you just want to stir the pot of animosity. You keep on slinging fake history to keep the divisions going.

Remember India just threw out the corrupt and this tells us that it has the strength to throw out the divisive also.

        • My simple question has always been: Why is it that a Christian Europe managed to stop Islamic invasion from entering Europe, but a Hindu India did not? The answer lies in what the religions did to their people. Whereas Christianity had unified their local populations, Hinduism had not.

          Like

        • Christianity did not stop Islam actually. The Arabs were in Spain for centuries. They were in complete control of the Iberian peninsula. They were constantly threatening French territories and so on. Later the Ottomans were in Europe for centuries or at least too close for comfort. They of course controlled large swathes of Eastern Europe. The idea that empires stop other empires on the basic of religion is the worst kind of myth though one propagated by British colonialism and internalized by Hindu reformist forces even as early as the 19th century. There was for instance the idea that monotheisms are more successful, they have a central text and so on. Hence the effort by Hindutva to make the Ramayana the central text and so forth.

There is this subversive thing about history, provided one is really in search of the facts and not mythology. No matter what ‘essentialism’ you support history will deconstruct it. I will right now throw out this challenge to anyone who cares to take it up. Throw out an essentialism based on nation or ethnicity or race or religion or geography or whatever and I will proceed to deconstruct it. Again this is only for those who are willing to follow the historical record and not simply interested in versions to further their anecdotal sense of reality or to serve various mythologies.

This is not about religion. It us about efficiency on one hand and compassion on the other. The system that is most efficient and most compassion is adopted. The system that is not gets rejected.

        • Bandra, NATO was not formed in 800AD! I am referring to Islam trying to enter Europe back then. Not sure how you think I made up history or the present.
As for efficiency and compassion, clearly, every Muslim ruler co-opted the positives of the Indian populace. If 1000 yrs of Muslim Rule could not totally annihilate Hinduism, surely there were positive aspects that even the great Mughals found attractive. They even adopted several Hindu Royal traditions. They too revered the Ganges, as much as only drinking the pure water of the Ganga, due to its exalted status amongst their subjects. The simple fact is that India with its size and diversity has always had an effect on its newcomers to co-opt rather than to destroy. That was the only way to govern this land.

        • This is another myth — that every Muslim ruler started out with the explicit mission of ‘annihilating’ Hinduism. In wars in those (and not only then) there was a lot of desecration of cultural monuments and so forth that were great tragedies for the people concerned. There were brutal conflicts in which all kinds of atrocities occurred. But there is nothing unique about what even the most extreme Muslim invaders did in India in a historical sense. I would like to reverse every such atrocity if I could but that is just the way of history. All cultures do it to various levels. In India itself Buddhism was more or less chased out of India. Ever wonder why in the land of Buddha there are such few Buddhists while there are so many in East Asia? Because there was at least four centuries of strife in India between Hindus and Buddhists before the former decisively won. I could talk about other histories here. From Dravidians to adivasis (who call the Hindus ‘diku’ or ‘outsider’ in many of their languages) the ‘Aryan’ Hindu is the first colonizer or at least the one who did this before the Muslims and the British. There is no ‘natural’ connection of Hinduism to Indian history. This too is a myth. Hindu presence in India has a history. Forget everything else. Within the very fabric of Hindu practices (which I hesitate to define as Hinduism inasmuch as this word too is a colonial invention) you have one of the worst oppressions of human recorded history in the treatment meted out to lower castes of all kinds. So how far and how sincerely do you want to follow history?!

Again it is very important not to judge the past by our present day standards. So for instance slavery was a terrible practice but it was also par for the course in different cultures at different points in time. Today too there are forms of near-slavery that exist. people in the future will wonder how we managed to support economic systems that depended on child labor and what not! What the Muslims did in India or what many of them did was fairly typical by historical standards. There were many worse examples of such behavior as well. It’s not right but historically typical the way many things in history are are typical at certain points in time.

Once again this is a question of ethics and sincerity. Does one have either one in equal measure to wish to pursue the truth. One can just chase the mythology but every culture does this or there are many people in every culture who follow this line of thought. This is the kind of thinking that leads to the desecration of the other’s heritage.

I don’t mean to be wistful about the past and critical about the present. Indeed, I wish to say precisely the opposite. It is often forgotten that the great promise of socialism was not only that it would discipline inequality and end poverty but also that it would bring about India’s industrial transformation, just as it had in the Soviet Union. In the end, nothing of that sort happened. Socialism neither ended poverty nor did it bring about economic transformation. It only brought khadi, bicycles, bad roads, inadequate power, awful housing, terrible public buildings, wretched public transport, substandard industrial products, a bloated bureaucracy, social domination by a class speaking Oxbridge English, and political dominance by those who blindly believed in the state and profoundly distrusted private initiative and business.

Do you know how many seats BJP got in its first attempt in 1984? Only 2. So lets say AAP has done doubly well. No one really expected AAP to get a lot of seats but it gave the wonderful opportunity to spread out and have a base all over the country.
So now AAP has a cell in every state, and people are aware that there is such a party.

Kejriwal was able to get 2lakhs plus votes – all from scratch, with hardly any money and as far as I’m concerned a great achievement – inspite of all the bjp gundas intimidating the volunteers and not letting AK or anyone speak at jansabhas by shouting zombie-like ‘modi modi modi’ ughhhh!!!

Massive Modi? Really? With 31% of the total votes? That too by heavy EVM manipulation? Cheating.

I had a gut feeling this was the case when suddenly BJP started winning seats where there chances were less.

-Not only were the fb pages of bhakts full of how many times they voted but I have first hand information from my relatives whose household help happily informed them how she and her husband went to Agra to vote there “too” and many did that.

-Then there is the seal tag being found in Mumbai on the *hold your breath* – roadside.

-And this one takes the cake. A certain character in Varanasi, sitting at home with a set of EVMs a day before theVaranasi elections – 11th May. The timeline status then had several of hid supporters joking about it, and he declaring – iss baar Modi sarkar ko lana hi hai.
This was all over the twitter yesterday, and today he has taken it off. But it is now all over.
In case anyone thinks it is a photoshopped picture there is a forensic proof as well.

This cant be an isolated case. With media and everyone in their pockets no one will do anything. So there is a PM there wholly by cheating the nation.

        • LOL! OldGold, please stop this ridiculous “68% did not vote for him” meme, this is a first-past-the-post system. The more parties that contest and divide the votes, the lower the winner’s voting percentage. Does this mean that in 2009, 63% did not vote for UPA, or in 2004, 66% did not vote for the UPA, or 63% did not votre for NDA in 1999, etc etc? Please, this is a juvenile comment, AAP needs to educate itself about how Indian democracy operates.

This election is a slap in the face to all the caste-based and appeasement parties. Every party was fighting for another slice of the pie which they could claim based on their caste or religious affiliation. The BJP just skimmed away the creamy layers from all these castes/sub-castes/religions. This was bound to happen. When they boxed the BJP to just run after upper-caste votes, they pulled a Mandal on the Mandalists. They fielded an OBC for the PM post. Now, neither the Yadavs nor Mayawati could fight the BJP with their anti-uppercaste propaganda. And your dear old AAP helped them mightily by splitting all the Muslim votes away from SP and Congress.
The North and North-West are fertile grounds for caste mashups. The BJP in-fact took a page from Mayawati’s book, she tried and suceeded in stitching a Dalit-Brahmin alliance in her 2007 victory. The BJP stitched a upper-caste/OBC/aspirationalDalit/aspirationalMuslim alliance. Those numbers were enough to pip everybody else. Unless India discards this Westminister model of democracy, any opportunist party will keep doing the same.

        • My Dear, the Lok Sabha elections in the North/North-West have played out exactly how the state elections get played out. In the Lok Sabha, the BJP got a 40+% voteshare in UP to land 73 (90%) seats. In the state elections, SP got a 55% majority in 2011 with 29% voteshare. Every 1% voteshare over 30% in UP results in ever more increasing seats. Go ask professional psephologists, they will tell you how it works.
This scenario has repeated in MP, Bihar, Raj, Guj, Delhi, HP, etc. It is a beauty of the first-past-the-post system. Every other party in the North competes for a base 20% voteshare, and tries to breakaway another 10% from the competitors. BJP broke away 20+% from Cong/SP/BSP/JDU etc. Thats the landslide.

So, did AAP not become the TeamB of BJP? Shud they even be complaining now? Kejri needs to learn the intricacies of Indian psephology.

BJP even had an American company (I think the same as Obama’s)to run his campaign. APCO or AMCO or something to market Modi the product.

        • I said that every democracy functions similarly, ie, wild spending on elections. But, obviously since these 2 are the largest democracies, so their spend/candidate will be humongous. Name another democracy which is so big. The per capita spend for the US is the greatest. But the total amount is perhaps a small multiple of what it is in India, given the size of the voting public in India.

The comfort of hopping around in choppers and other stuff compared to the hard work of individuals and the candidates shows the difference between moneyed game and real democracy. Of course money wins (and democracy dies).

  59. The worthy but shifting debate

Some very good (& noble) points are being made, but in my opinion, there’s the usual ‘shift’ in the terms of debate

Firstly I’m NOT a BJP supporter and far from being a modi fan. Infact I feel Modi lacks the wherewithal, stature & maturity to lead a country of Indias complexity & size.

But the point here is that
Are we gonna deny that the voting public has voted decisively in his favour?
Are we gonna say we will respect or acknowledge the verdict only if it suits us?
Do we not have confidence in the maturity and ability of this voting populace to understand what’s affecting their own future?
Do we not have confidence that any ‘wrong’ done by these election results can’t be reversed?
Have these ‘wrong’ never happened before ?
Let’s be honest–why these sudden cries of ‘rape rape’ now?
Let’s have a sense of balance and if you have agreed to play the ‘democracy game’, atleast play it right till the culmination

Besides there are some points on the above discussion

    1) some basic tenets are universal & non-negotiable
No (sane) person is denying that minority rights need protecting–I hope this is unanimous
And if there are hidden agendae, under the ever vigilant eyes of detractors and media, these shall be assessed and consequences will be there for modi (like any one else!)

    2) Evidence based
Decisions should be made on evidence based practice
Not on perceptions or anecdotal reports
Can one deny modi has been given a clean chit by the courts ? While one understands the issues with this ‘clean chit’ but one can’t cry foul about it just because it doesn’t suits ones discourse

    3) ‘Minority-ism’ over everything?
Ask a hungry family or an unemployed youngster or a suicidal famer or a cheated industrialist or a raped woman –what’s more important in life–
The ‘minority politics’ or the burning issue on their life? The answer is obvious.
So tinting the whole discourse with one aspect and staying relatively mum over all the rest (equally/more important) issues isn’t fair

    4) ‘Excessive’ freedom
I have always felt that Indians enjoy too much freedom. Seen carefully, this enhanced freedom infact curtails their own rights since it allows another person to abuse his/her ‘rights’ impinging over those of others. Coupled with an ineffectual legal process, this is unhealthy. So a ‘temperation’ of this rights blitzkrieg is needed.

    5) Dictatorial tendencies
I will go to the extent that a firm leader with a certain dictatorial elements is actually good for India currently. The democratic process is firmly entrenched in the Indian ethos and any abuse of this will surely be reined in soon.
Comparing Modi to Hitler is not only far-fetched but irresponsible at this juncture. Yes I don’t deny that it’s not an impossible extension of Modis persona but the chances are minuscule because of the numerous ‘correction’ measures in place.

    6) Demographic Cycles
There are well-defined stages of ‘evolution’ of a new nation states & even new religions. Demographic and socio-cultural scientists have studied these and they are well-known.

    7) ‘Genetic mixing’ (& the lack of it)
One sees a certain ‘anxiety’ and insecurity in the initial stages of every religion & nation state where there’s an extremism in adhering to certain ‘rules’. Slowly there’s a certain ‘liberalism’ perhaps due to easing of that ‘anxiety’. Also some ‘dilution’ due to factors like ‘mixing’ and genetic interplay.

    8) Consanguinity
However due to some rules that prohibit this genetic mixing and even promotes ‘cousin marriages’, certain elements continue to be over expressed.

    9) the Confounders
Things aren’t so easy and simple in real life
Many confounding factors muddy the waters not to make it more difficult for analysts but because life is not simple (fact!)
The biggest confounding factor is that different gripis of individuals behave differently in defeat & more importantly in victory
    Some are gracious
    Some follow protocols
Whilst others stamp their authority and force the issue while they can get away with the added ruthlessness
It’s this difference which lies at the basis of this inherent complexity which perplexes analysts
To add to it, history can be ‘rewritten’ and even altered by the ‘victors’.

    10) The ‘left’ & ‘right’
We all know what’s the ‘left’ and the ‘right’
But what if I say that the ‘right’ of different nation states & religions itself is different
    And not entirely comparable?
The answers of the above questions if sought (honestly) lead one to the next stage of this ‘debate’-
but the key word here is ‘honestly’

Ps: some good points by Amy, bandra nari & Oldgold. Btw Oldgold where did u go for ‘holidays’–do write a travelogue about your experiences …

Interesting not because all arguments have merit. Actually, very few do. But, it is a window in the minds of people.
The extreme theories and clutching at straws to trivialise BJP victory is indeed pitiable.
I grant that Satyam and Ami have the most honest objection to Modi and BJP but even they are in danger of being in a situation where they are so enamoured of a ‘sexy’ ideology that everything else takes a back seat. Hard to take OG or Bandra seriosuly.

Just one point, I would like to make. The statistics that Ami refers to re polygamy are from 1961 and even they are misreperesented.
It is like a talking point taken from an Islamic blog.
More recent statistic from NFHS-3 ( FROM 2005-2006) showed that the average number of life partners for a Hindu male was 1.77 as opposed to 2.55 for a Muslim male. Not a big difference but it is their. I am not implying that all or most of Muslims are polygamous because they are not. It IS a fact that percentage of Muslim population has gone up FROM 9.9% TO 14.6% BETWEEN 1951 and 2011. The cultural differences in procreative practices cannot be denied. An average Muslim woman gives birth to 4.1 children as opposed to 2.9 for a Hindu woman. So, the demographics are changing. Which is not as problem as long as uslims are treated the same and they consider themselves Indian.

Look at thus way, at least I provide you with reasons why I cannot take you seriously, while you cannot substantiate.

Anyway let’s steal away your stats fig leaf. 1.77 Vs 2.55 LOL Given the huge difference in population, your own stats don’t even come close to accusing the Moslem for being most likely Indian to practice Polygamy.

Furthermore, there are records that say that back in 60s the Moslem made up close to 20% of the population. Since then all kind of numbers have been thrown around. Everyone has a view in this and why not. This is a sensitive issue. But given all the politics behind this number, it is not clear if this %age has gone up or down. Yet this does not matter to you. I do agree on the difference in number of children per woman, and I do think that this is a problem, not because of demographic changes but because of overpopulation, the poor having more children than they can afford to look after and the associated risks of malnutrition/ infant and mother mortality etc.

I do think that a two child policy would be an excellent thing for India, especially now that there is a strong central government that could potentially enforce it (one-child policy would be disastrous IMO, because India is a country where intensive elder care is the norm, and the sole care of four parents would be too great a burden for one couple, not to mention that the already highly skewed sex ratios would become positively dystopian).

  61. Regardless, I think the challenge for Modi other than fulfilling his promise of growth and development is to be inclusive and win over
the ones whose confidence he does not enjoy. Easier said than done but he has to. If he wants to be in office for more than one term and remain relevant. In a country like India you cannot be a PM for just one community or religion. On the other hand, the other communities should be willing to keep an open mind instead of being stuck in age old mentality and not be influenced by the drivel spouted by some of their religious leaders. It is a two way street.

No strategy in his actions at all, he just keeps doing these little tactful actions which in the bigger picture do not add up to anything. The image that he has managed to create in the past 5 months is that he has an insatiable lust for power.
If you remember, in our discussions back in Jan-Feb, I had said that he needs to just keep his head down and keep working for the next 5 yrs in Delhi. Show the results, then go national. Trying to create a solid base in one state, and then trying to go national is just common sense. But he was in a hurry to anoint himself as a PM. Corruption is a deeply embedded social problem, it is not just a govt phenomenon. Indian society is socially corrupt, as is reflected in the actions of every individual, from spitting paan on the street to getting away with murder. To eradicate this, a long long process is required. Kejri needs good advisers who can guide him, otherwise he will just be a bottle-rocket that got extinguished too soon.

That ios why I’d rather thing EVMs were manipulated, and maintain my trust in people.

There is no magic wand do end corruption in a single day, unlike what Kejri would have everyone believe.
He has changed his goalposts more times than anyone can count. From not wanting to be in govt, to contesting elections, not wanting to form govt with support, to forming govt, quitting, fighting Lok Sabha, getting drubbed, to again wanting to form a state gov, to finally deciding he does not want to form. So, as Rocky said before, and also in the words of the great John Kerry : “I was for it before I was against it before I was for it”. Even Kerry could not claim to such stunning political U-turns as has Mr Kejriwal.
Do you realize how much of a joke he has become? Just go look at twitter and see the ridicule being heaped on him for his drama today.
Again, he might be honest, but he is an extremely poor politician. Does he not realize that politics is all perception? If he cannot play this game, he should just go back and run his NGO, and try to discover new scams in govt, and perhaps keep doing a diff dharna everyday. He might be more useful to the fight against corruption by exposing govt corruption from the outside, rather than trying to un-strategically fight an unplanned battle from within.

Use the four MPs you have and focus on what you are good at- finding faults and help governments around the country to fix these problems. Just look back- all your career, all your life you have not completed (end to end) anything, you are simply not capable of building stuff, you are good at identifying defects. I am not sure now about starting a new political thread. the election was a special case for obvious reasons but in general the back and forth on the very same points again and again drowns out everything else. It might be good to take a break from politics for a while! While I don’t mind the discussions the blog isn’t primarily about politics!
