A Big ‘Godzilla’ Has a Big Weekend

Fatty? Oh, yes. A remake of “Godzilla” took in an estimated $93.2 million in tickets at North American theaters over the weekend, a huge No. 1 total that left this version of the radioactive lizard – mocked online in recent weeks for being too chubby – with the last laugh. (Or at least roar.) “Godzilla,” powered in part by strong Imax and 3-D screenings, cost a reported $195 million to make, with tax credits bringing the net cost closer to $160 million. Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers collaborated on the picture, but Legendary put up 75 percent of the budget and will thus reap an outsize share of the profits.
A monster-sized box office total for “Godzilla” was not terribly surprising given general audience awareness for the character; Warner and Legendary also started marketing this movie nearly two years ago. But anytime Hollywood finds a new movie series – there will most definitely be sequels – it is a big deal.
Second place for the weekend went to the R-rated comedy “Neighbors” (Universal), which took in about $26 million, for a two-week total of $91.5 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (Sony) chugged along in third place, selling an estimated $16.8 million in tickets, for a three-week domestic total of $172.2 million. The weekend’s other new wide-release movie, “Million Dollar Arm,” arrived in fourth place, taking in a weak $10.5 million and continuing a disappointing streak for Disney’s signature live-action movie label. On the bright side, Disney spent only about $25 million on the film, a sports drama featuring the TV star Jon Hamm.
So those who had a problem with Doniger should read what R. K. Narayan said in his own take on Ramayana-
“Gautama came back at this moment, having intuitively felt that something was wrong, and surprised the couple in bed. Ahalya stood aside filled with shame and remorse; Indra assumed the form of a cat (the most facile animal form for sneaking in or out) and tried to slip away. The sage looked from the cat to the woman and was not to be deceived. He arrested the cat where he was with these words:
“Cat, I know you; your obsession with the female is your undoing. May your body be covered with a thousand female marks, so that in all the worlds, people may understand what really goes on in your mind all the time.” Hardly had these words left his lips when every inch of Indra’s body displayed the female organ.
Indra’s predicament became a joke in all the worlds at first, but later proved noticeably tragic. He stayed in darkness and seclusion and could never appear before men or women. This caused much concern to all the gods, as his multifarious duties in various worlds remained suspended, and they went in a body to Brahma and requested him to intercede with Gautama. By this time, the sage’s resentment had vanished. And he said in response to Brahma’s appeal, “May the thousand additions to Indra’s features become eyes.”
“And that’s how Indra became known as “the thousand-eyed god.”
