Salman and Sonam in Barajtya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (older post updated)

Fox Star Studios and Rajshri Productions (P) Ltd are partnering for the hugely anticipated Salman Khan-starrer, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. The film is being directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, known for making some of the biggest grossing family entertainers in Bollywood like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Saath Saath Hain and Vivah. Sooraj will be directing Salman after 15 years and expectations from the project are set to soar. Produced by Rajshri Productions (P) Ltd and presented by Fox Star Studios, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is another complete family entertainer, set to release worldwide on Diwali 2015. The film will go on the floors next month.

Commenting on the same, Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, India, says “Rajshri Productions have an amazing lineage and have made India’s most memorable family films. They represent the best of Indian values and have a unique understanding of Indian audiences as a result of which their cinema cuts across all audiences. Soorajji is one of those rare, gifted storytellers and with this partnership, we have the extraordinary opportunity to combine the unique expertise of Rajshri Productions along with the worldwide marketing and distribution muscle of Fox Star Studios. We can’t wait to commence this exciting journey together!”

Adding to Singh, Sooraj R. Barjatya says, “Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a very special project for all of us at Rajshri, as we are working with Salman after the successful films that we have done together. It is a very special feeling and I am humbled by his love for us.”

Adds Kamal Kumar Barjatya “We are delighted to be partnering with Fox Star Studios on our most important film and will have the advantage of their substantial marketing and distribution expertise across the world. Our relationship with Mr Vijay Singh of Fox Star Studios goes back many years and their team’s enthusiasm and love for our project is inspiring.”

The film will see Sonam Kapoor paired opposite Salman Khan, while Himesh Reshammiya will be composing the music.

It’s official! The Salman-Sooraj rift is finally over. Sooraj Barjatya has found his long lost ‘Prem’ for the actor and has signed him as the lead actor in his next directorial venture. After recent reports that Salman had been signed to do a cameo in Barjatya’s Love You Mr Kalakaar, Salman will now play the lead in another film apart from this one.

Apparently Salman-Sooraj jodi had gone sour after Barjatya’s father Raj Kumar Barjatya had expressed disapproval towards Salman post the blackbuck killing incident.

Salman KhanA close associate to Sooraj told Mumbai Mirror, “Everyone at Rajshri had presumed that Soorajji would never direct another film. Without Salman Soorajji’s heart was just not in it. Salman was the only non-family male member who could move freely in and out of the Rajshri household. The black buck incident changed everything.”

After Hum Saath Saath Hain, Barjatya directed two films, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon and Vivah. It is believed that both these films were written keeping Salman in mind. Barjatya reluctantly signed Hrithik Roshan as the lead in Main Prem Ki.. and Shahid in Vivah.

Now after 4 years, Barjatya is directing a movie again and that too with Salman as the lead.

Barjatya’s sister Kavita told the tabloid, “I am not aware what his plans are. But if Soorajji does start a new film it will surely be starring him (Salman). The whole family wants him to return to direction.”

Good days for the box office are not far!

  1. so wats ur reaction sm?

i m too happy with this combo 🙂

    • Why are you happy, Rooney? If, as you say in another thread, the youth of India have outgrown Raj and Simran, they have surely outgrown Prem and Suman, too, as well as Prem and Nisha. 🙂

My own reaction is, it really depends if Sooraj is capable of writing a mature love story. I haven’t seen Ek Vivah Aisi Bhi (or whatever the exact title was), but otherwise, it seems he is stuck with his Prem being always around 25. As Salman himself has said, he cannot play that kind of role any more, not only because of his age, but also because he can no longer do justice to the innocence of such a character.

If Sooraj sticks to his previous types of stories, I think the film will be soundly rejected by today’s urban audiences.

      • A late reply I guess!

I am happy as i feel, as see Raj and Simran were overdone to death. Prem I feel is not. It’s like the mandatory james bond which you never outgrow.

Also I might like a modern take on Prem!

        • Prem is a far more endearing character than Raj.
I think Barjatya had brilliantly downplayed Prem’s character in HSSH.Actually, one of the saving graces of the movie. Barjatya could go either way. Can remain dated and come up with a dud or reinvent.
Not excited with Sonam’s choice. Need someone new. Have seen too much of Deepika. Need a fresh face.

          • agree on most counts. Whether Salman after all the masala is still acceptable in a subdued outing remains to be seen.

          • jayshah Says:

His character was refreshing in HSSH but the film was a drag. Barjatya went for the juggernaut there but really missed big time.

Oh thanks for this! This post and the movie is a breath of fresh air !! I am confident about Salman but hope Sooraj keeps up with the times. Eagerly waiting and wish it was this Diwali though. Hope this trumps HAHK.

Incidentally this fits with – “India’s ruling party to encourage films that promote cultural Values” – The Hollywood reporter

    Salman’s Name Prem, Sonam’s – Ratna and Their Dog’s – Dhanno !!

  4. I am not happy with the heroine’s choice here. Sonam hasn’t shown any promise yet except in that film with Dhanush…….

    • jayshah Says:

Agree but apart from Deepika, there really is not much choice out there!

      • Yes, Sonam comes across as such an annoying, conceited creature.

I think Shradha would make a fine Barjatya heroine, but she is very young. Then again they all are.

  5. sanjana Says:

Is this a film blog? Who is Salman Khan and who is Sonam Kapoor?

  6. Bandra.NRI Says:

Looks like Salman is making a mistake. Barjatya is dated. Perhaps as dated as Subash Ghai. I would be shocked if this movie amounts to anything.

    Good luck.

  7. Has Sonam been paired with any of the Khans in the past? Dada-Poti ki jodi lagti hai yeh.

  8. “Agree but apart from Deepika, there really is not much choice out there!”
But what’s wrong with a ‘demure domesticated’ katrina? 🙂

But yeah , deepika can ‘morph’ into that space as well

Btw randomly came across this obscure song I’ve never heard before of a film I’ve not seen

Folks–would point you towards two things

How SEL do so well in this style effortlessly (these are not chart buster tracks though)

Also guys –note how deepika leaves no opportunity to get into an ultrashort pair of shorts…
Someone rightly mentioned earlier –I think sanjana–that she relies on her legs a lot (this tendency was more initially when her acting chops were minimal ) –before cocktail taught her some acting
Anyhow folks-‘appreciate’ this under rated obscure (but good imo) track ….

The Richest Actors in the World Are Not Who You Expect

“SRK, as he is sometimes called, is worth $120 million more than Cruise, according to research company”

Since it was covered by GMA on American TV, it is worth mentioning this phenomenal rise. Ofc his movies have suffered due to this business like approach to acting.

    • This is a huge deal, to be compared with Hollywood Stars on money matters is big enough, but to be at the top is something else.

      • jayshah Says:

What is amazing is the wealth has probably been propelled to this extent in the last 10 years or so. Star salaries weren’t astronomical in india 10 years ago, but in Hollywood they still were. Only since the mid 2000’s do we here about stars earning 10’s or crores for films and endorsements so this wealth acceleration is over a much shorter span than say Cruise’s. I’d take any values with a pinch of salt though in an absolute sense.

    • $600 mil is 3,600 crore.

I would like to see break down of how this total was arrived.

What are others like aamir, salman, hrithik, amitabh worth?

  10. MSDhoni Says:

Though I don’t doubt his wealth been achieved by right means, there is a general consensus even a small minister/ MLA/ MP in India is worth more than Mitt Romneys of the world , who had a tough time dealing with the filthy rich politician tag and in all probabilities lost the election to Obama on those grounds. There is huge underground/ dormant wealth in India.

In SRK’s case he is been an asset player in London and Dubai and must be heavily invested in Indian stocks /hedge funds etc too. Then he owns KKR and Red Chilies and some amusement park in India.

Since he is in public eye and has many detractors, I am sure the wealth build up must be clean otherwise he would be crucified by now. What is amazing is most of the wealth is self generated and no support from spouse or any other family member.

    Very sad.
