Top 10 most disappointing films seen in the cinema!
Here is my list. Let’s say whatever film I go to see I go in with a reasonable level of expectation that it will not be an epic disappointment. There are obviously some on this list that one would have expected to be a disaster of sorts but I had faith!
Please adds yours…and maybe when we are done…we will have the WORST OF ALL TIME IN THE CINEMA!
In no particular order
Hello Brother – I said in no particular order, but this is the epic of epic disasters. Total joke of a film.
Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon – considering Barjatya rattled out to classics in MPK and HAHK, and his HSSH was decent in parts, MPKDH was a real crapfest.
Mela – I don’t know what Aamir was smoking when he chose this film. Total disaster.
Asoka – The soundtrack was reasonably good, but really did not gel well. This was a completely miss-cast film, miss-used soundtrack.
Yaadein – Subhash Ghai’s bomb of a film, which had a decent soundtrack but on the heels of Taal and Pardes it was a miss. The chemistry was lacking again between Hrithik and Kareena.
One 2 Ka 4 – at the fag-end of Juhi’s career, and just before SRK went on a run of hits, this silly film came out. It was a tossup between this and Duplicate for me.
Salaam-E-Ishq – Salman, Priyanka, Govinda, Juhi, Anil, Vidya, John Abraham, Akshaye, Ayesha … you’d think something could come good of this, except, Nikhil Advani picked up all the bad traits of Karan Johar
Blue – only Kylie saved this bomb.
Aarzoo – I thought back in the day, any Madhuri film is worth it. This film really sucked. I have never seen a death scene like it…youtube it, and see Saif die like a statue!
Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage – This one was so rubbish, I can’t even remember it.
Honourable mentions – Dil Ka Rishta, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, Ra.One, Chaahat, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Kidnap, Chal Mere Bhai, Players.

Actually there are hundreds if not thousands of movies that deserve to be in this list.

Hard to disagree with many of the films here. Hello Brother might be in a league of its own! And Yaadein would be up there. Arzoo on the other hand was decent (in my view). Some others here weren’t horrible but yes disasters relative to their aims. Luckily I didn’t see a number of these films in the theater so I was saved the true horror! Unfortunately did go for Hello Brother and probably that rare movie (if not the only one) where I walked out at the interval. Have never seen SeL.
Good idea for a post though.

Hmm .. good topic. I enjoyed every crap till early 90’s .. My first major disappointment was Trimurti .. then Khamoshi, Lucky Duplicate, Mrityudata, Hello Brother, Koyla, Army … List is very long. Post 2000, Very few theatrical outings satisfied me completely ..

Very harsh on Players. Think you can add Zamana Deewana, Tera Jaadu Chal Gaya, Gori Tere Pyar Mein, Na Tum Jaano na hum, Tum mere ho, jawaani deewani, kyunki main jhoot nahin bolta, ek main aur ek tu. Had to endure some of these in theatre and they were pure torture!

missed the ‘honorable mentions’ earlier. Actually I enjoyed Players quite a bit. Thought it was Abbas-Mustaan’s best (for whatever it’s worth!).

Satyam: You should check out SeI(I am really surprised you haven’t seen this). It isn’t bad by any means, leave alone a disaster (Rangan’s quote on SeI sums it up perfectly- “An all-out ode to love is frustrating, unpredictable, messy, unwieldy, and yet finally worth the while – much like love itself.” Infact I will say that Advani made a far better film here than KHNH. BTW did you ever get around to watching D-Day?!
You prefer Players over Race and Baazigar (infact even over a Hamraaz and a Khiladi)?! I didn’t mind the film, but I thought Abhishek was a complete misfit in that role, not the least because he looked overweight in the film.
There were 2 SRK films which I saw as a kid and was scarred for life- English Babu Desi Mem and Guddu. And let’s just there are a slew of Salman films from the 90s which are absolutely unwatchable
I recently walked out of Besharam.
Do agree with most of Jay’s choices. Don’t think Asoka wasn’t that bad either (if nothing else the battle scenes here were fantastic).

Asoka was ok too but poor relative to what it might have been. On Players as you know I’ve already written a long piece so won’t repeat everything here. Some of Abbas-Mustaan’s films are guilty pleasures (race included though not Race 2) but they’re also completely junk. In Players they tried to be more plot-oriented and make a more refined film than they ever have before. The film didn’t work though it might have done much better had Abhishek been in better box office shape. But ultimately something like the Italian Job even within the US context does a fraction of what even terrible blockbusters do. Because even for a Western audience this subject doesn’t have enough ‘masala’. Abbas-Mustaan added the Johnny lever track but kept it about the plot otherwise, unlike with their other efforts. And clearly no one was particularly interested.

Enjoyed Asoka a lot. Something about period movies really engages me, I guess. Other than that, great list. May I suggest Himmatwala? That was the absolute worst movie I’ve seen. If you had the bad luck of seeing it in the theatre, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

MPDKH was fine in the second half. First half was quite poor. It’s also about how one is watching the movie. So Jay’s talking about theater visits. A lot of movies were ok for me on home viewing.. fast forwarding and so on. But the theater would be a different deal! Aatank hi Aatank for example though yet another stale Godfather deal was quite alright on video. Drona I did see in the theater and was reasonably horrified!

agreed i liked the film except – it lacked any kind of friction and everyone was so diabetically sweet….but SB failed in music here otherwise it could have become a runaway hit….

I was watching aatank hi aatank in a theatre and the film ends with someone firing a gun shot and then you see the close ups of the protagonists staring around trying to figure who fired the shot and the film ends there. My friends looked more bewildered than the actors with the ending.
went to watch khamoshi and a friend walked out early. he had gone for Nana’s dialogue baazi only to find that he was mute in the film.

I agree that many Abbas Mustan’s films have been guilty pleasures (Baadshah, for example) but Baazigar might be one of the single most in your face amoral films to have come out of Bollywood. So you have a protagonist who bumps off absolutely innocent women and men with absolutely no regret because someone embezzled property from his father. Fine idea for a film as long as the protagonist is shown as pure evil. But when the film tries to manipulate its viewers and kind of “justifies” his actiona toward the climax, it leaves a very poor taste. That this film was a big success and has a few fans is kind of disturbing

Hey guys I am just chiming in here since I just watched Baazigar and being away from Hindi films for a long time. I was just shocked at how the plot was so ridiculously constructed. I mean how can someone enjoy this garbage… everything from the guy’s winning the girl, the fights, the pretense of taking over the same business three times, the overly dramatic everything, the mother in anguish… the whole thing is like one giant parody of Bollywood isn’t it??? Am I missing something here – this looked to me like a film for rikshavallas??

AZG: I personally found Baazigar crappy, and misogynistic as well — but there’s nothing wrong in a “film for rikshavallas”; especially given the garbage directed at those presumably not rickshaw drivers — the KJos and Zindagi Milegi Na Dobaras of the world; unlike the latter, the former often point to a cinema that (even if in debased form) was more than just an ad for a lifestyle. By contrast, with the likes of far too many contemporary Hindi films, I get the same feeling I do when I pass an ad for a luxury apartment building (Lodha Fiorenza, anyone?) anywhere in India — actually, not quite the same feeling. With a flat, especially in Bombay, I often wish I could buy it!!!
In that sense, Baazigar was at least authentic: indeed at least some of SRK’s attraction is that he preserves some of that charge, as one of the last heroes to emerge from an older paradigm (even if his stardom depended on the destruction of that paradigm); Hrithik, despite Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, is not in the same position, and hence far more plastic.

My list of recent crappy movies- Go Goa Gone, Lootera, Ghanchakkar, aiyya, Student of the Year, Agneepath , Nautanki Saala, Satyagrah and Gunday.
Movies that I have absolutely refused/ avoided to watch- Zanzeer, Shahid, Rascals, Main tera hero, YPD-2,

I watched Rascals on tv. Terrible and also an insulting copy of a good romcom Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Rascals with its cheap and cheesy male protagonist duo — absolute trash.

Lol, even though I come up with long lists of films I’ve seen, I’ve hardly watched any of the ones on people’s lists in this thread (and the ones I have, I’ve really liked such as Khamoshi and Lootera – can’t believe you guys hated them!!).
I generally only go the cinema if I know a film will be good. However, have had a few slip-ups, as well as a couple of major disappointments. My list would include:
Devdas – most disappointing cinema trip of my life. I expected so much from SLB, but apart from Madhuri and the music/song picturisation/sets/costumes, this was a dreadful film.
Ram Leela – no longer expect much from SLB but still, this was terrible.
MPKDH – argh!!!!
Salaam-e-Ishq – saw this in a drive-in cinema in Nairobi, but this was a bad, bad film! However, I did love the Vidya-John bits.
Really can’t think of any others. I can’t think of what would induce someone to pay money to see the kinds of films you guys have on your lists, eg Hello Brother, Blue.

When a movie becomes unbearable
Walking out is the best option and the usher will be sympathetic.
Popcorn and pepsi help.
Watch the people around you discreetly.
Clap when a child starts screaming. The mother trying to hush up is not a good sign.
The restlessness around you is also an indication.
Use your walkman and try to sleep.
When the film ends, you will be reminded.
Out in the open, you can see people waiting to watch with happy faces.

About Trimurti, i know someone who went to watch a flick called Teen Moti starring the duplicates of Sanjay Dutt, SRK and Jackie Shroff. It was a spoof movie released right before Trimurti, A few people got conned by some fake Sanjay Dutt posters and they got an unpleasant surprise in the theatre. Note that Dutt had been signed by Ghai for Trimurti and was later replaced by Anil Kapoor.
I went to watch Devdas and found it too boring. It was unwatchable. Halfway through, i left to go into the second theatre there which was playing Panic Room starring Jodie Foster.
i found the latter much more enjoyable. As for Devdas I have yet to muster the courage to watch it again.

LOL, this reminds me of “Ramgarh ke Sholay”, which starred a bunch of doubles (but the original Amjad Khan as Gabbar). The film also featured the not-quite-classic song “Raapat rola mat karo”. Truly, Youtube is the collective archive of our times: LINK.

Ashoka is among my favourite films of 2000s. I mostly love period films, even though some times it felt fake period especially the ‘bar’ song.
Don’t know much about earlier ones, and haven’t seen any other on the list.
Oh yes, saw SeL. It felt like an alien film, didn’t know any actors there. The only exciting part when I perked up was the – mere paas maa hai line.
After this saw only nice films that were recommended so didn’t get to watch bad films.
