  1. Kick Advance Booking Report
    Thursday 24 July 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kick has had a very good advance but as expected it is affected by pre eid. The single screen advance opened on Monday and it is quite clear that centres dominated by Muslim population are not as strong as they normally are for Salman Khan starrers.

In Delhi the advance is huge with single screens like Liberty being almost sold out until Wednesday. Other theatres like Delite and Odeon are also fantastic but many UP cities are not so strong and for Salman Khan films its always UP that is better than Delhi. This is obviously due to Ramadan as UP has a higher Muslim population than Delhi.

The multiplex advance started at large on Wednesday with good sales but again big cities in Gujarat which tend to have better advances were good but not as strong as they should be due to heavy Muslim presence in places like Ahmedabad and Surat.

The advance booking overall is not as strong as Dhoom 3 or Chennai Express for the weekend. It can be compared with Ek Tha Tiger which had a phenomenal advance for day one as it was a national holiday but the next two days were working days and pre eid so sales were less for those days. The all India pre sales by Thursday night will probably be the third highest ever after Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express.

    • I’ve always considered the whole Muslim angle largely a myth in these matters, perhaps at the margins it makes a difference but I’ve never seen evidence to concede more than this. Now of course here BOI is attributing everything to the pre-Eid period. Did Jai Ho also release during this season? Even for a star as hot as Salman every film will not necessarily create history! But then they also go on to compare it with ETT! So he isn’t doing badly even with Muslims staying away! In Ahmedabad for instance the Muslim population is exactly where the national number is or a bit higher (12-13%). Meanwhile Delhi has around 10-11% but here the initial is fine. So 1-2% makes a difference between Delhi and Ahmedabad?!

This is all speculation and assumptions. No data to prove any of this stuff.
The reality is this : if it’s such a big impact, makers would release post EID. I don’t know what the population of muslims is in India but I’d guess anything between 10-15%. Salman’s fanbase might be proportionately higher in this segment, but it’s not going to be like 50%. And if it was, why release on Friday and not Monday/Tuesday as the makers were speculating to do.
It’s like you say a marginal impact offset by the fact that this segment will be able to watch the film in a few days anyway.
It’s not like a ban in a state or a national disaster. It’s a delay. The risk in the delay is if the film has bad WOM it’s taken some receipts away. The opportunity is if the film has good WOM than post EID there will be a big kick up in receipts. Net net the impact is marginal.
It’s almost as if the writing suggests the release is a disadvantage. The release period is an advantage over any “normal” week always.

        • agreed on all counts.. and yeah the Muslim population nationally is 11-12%. It’s more or less the same in Delhi and Ahmedabad (higher in the latter). Think Surat’s pretty close too but not sure. In Bombay it’s closer to 20% but BOI haven’t mentioned this. As always their perspective is heavily North India-centric. But again leaving all this aside if a red hot star has a number of films in the same genre not all of these will be equally historic. For instance ETT opened much bigger than anything else Salman had done even though he was enjoying a number of very strong openings. There were obviously other factors here in play. The D3 analogies are in any case absurd.

The whole comparison with D3 is always absurd. This opened on a non-holiday on a record. The only comparison is the equivalent and I don’t think any film this year if opening on a non-holiday would challenge that record. It’s an exceptional record and more related to an event. None of the films releasing this year are event films…but many will put Kick, Bang Bang, HNY and Peekay in that category. I don’t think any of these films are on the level of D3 buzz/hype but that does not rule out them out grossing D3 (by them, I don’t really expect any “real” challenge except from HNY or Peekay). Even here the convenience of lumping CE and D3 together. The latter in terms of opening is in an altogether different stratosphere.

The key for any film to go past D3 will be the third week. I am sure these films can get close over two week period, though they’d have to take either the first or second week record in doing so (beating 180 crore first week is not easy, but if a film beats 65 crore second week than it is trending pretty stable…taking either record gets a film close to two week record of D3). However, the third week is where it cracked for D3 and where 3 Idiots was spectacular with a 30 crore week. That’s the key week now…and that in today’s market is a film that is doing very well if it’s getting anywhere close to or beating 3 Idiots in week 3. The only legitimate threat is Peekay on paper, coming from the same team. HNY to me sounds a “better” option than Kick or Bang Bang just because on paper it looks like a better film, stronger cast.
And the more I hear about Peekay, the more intrigued I am but the more I feel this might not be the breadth and reach of film 3 Idiots was. However, Hirani has always made a wide reaching film so could be fooled again.

Just like the second week was key last year for D3 where it went handsomely past the 3 Idiots record, it’s definitely now all about the third week for these films. I don’t doubt they can be spectacular over a short 100m sprint (opening weekend) or even a longer 400m sprint (opening week), they can even hold over the middle distance (2 weeks) but beyond is where they really become winners. And the only legitimate candidate is P.K and that is banking on Hirani making a film that is liked an awful lot…

            Like

          • again agreed on all counts.. and yeah I’ve noticed how CE is casually slipped into many of these contexts! And it’s also true that it will be hard for any film to match 3I’s reach. Having said that Hirani might surprise here in terms of his subject and that could make up the difference. Also after 3I Aamir-Hirani might get a massive initial, something that hasn’t been the case for Hirani in the past, at least on day 1. What one can say without any doubt is that every Hirani film has trended very well. So automatically this film ought to be in the running for that 3rd week total.

          • The difference between CE and D3 in the first 3 days was around 10 crores I think if one takes into account the Thursday night total of around 6 crores of CE. Where D3 scored over CE IMO was getting that number on a working Friday which was massive. But considering that the 3 days total was around 105 to 110 crores for the 2 movies , it is fair to lump them together.
On the third week total thing, the greatest problem we have is that even a well received movie will not retain the same screens for 3 weeks in a row if there is a new biggie coming in Week 3. CE IMO had the best chance as it had better WOM than D3. But even there it got affected in the second week by losing more than 2000 screens to OUATIMD. Considering CE made almost 20 crores on the first week Thursday due to a holiday it had potential to do much better in second week with better screens.

            Like

          • The question always is about what counts as an initial. It used to be one week. Then it was the weekend. then it became the first day. And then there are these added factors like paid previews, holiday/non-holiday, holidays over extended periods, competition (in the same week, week 2, week 3). All of these are significant factors and one must take everything into account. The thing about D3 is that this was simply the biggest thing around. No film in any scenario could have matched this, franchise or not. Now it has been my claim for very long that actually given the initials some of these films enjoy they should be doing a lot more. Certain ETT and CE shouldn’t have done less than 250 or so given where they started out. D3 should have easily cleared 300 and done 350 at the very least. But even looking at these ideal scenarios ETT/CE/D3 will never be on the same page. However that difference is a bit harder to establish just in the first three days. Let’s assume D3 had D2-like WOM and most people liked it. It still wouldn’t have added 10 crores to its weekend number (on any single day). Why? because very few people here would not have seen the film unless the WOM was terrible. This was big enough for everyone to show up. Even people with some doubts about this genre would have shown up for Aamir. Over the longer term though the higher end totals get affected because you don’t have enough repeats and some of the ‘soft’ support (people waiting to watch the film in the second or third week) fades. But this is why the film nonetheless crossed every other film by quite a margin. Because even mixed WOM was enough to get it there. With excellent word of mouth it would have done a lot more than 300 or whatever AS A MATTER of trending, not because it would have added massively to its weekend gross. 3I is a good example here. The film opened very strong but not spectacularly. It’s safe to say that no film had this kind of WOM. I know many people who saw this half a dozen times, some more than this. A very large number saw it at least twice. So WOM was through the roof here but this was still not evident over the weekend (at this historic level) but over the week where day after day it kept putting up 10 crores or whatever it was.

what happens on the other hand with CE or ETT or that sort of film is that the initial bang more or less exhausts the audience. These films are not WOM-proof in the same way. If these films get the D3 kind of WOM they come down very fast. ETT probably had worse WOM, it in any case faded completely after that initial 5-7 day run. CE surprised and did impressively if one expected no more than 100-150 (even the most optimistic people including the ‘fans’ who have since been pretending others weren’t calling it at 200 then!). On the other hand once it had that sort of week 1 it too didn’t do spectacularly though better than many other such films. But the point in any case is that with such films if the initial isn’t maximized the long term prospects are relatively weak anyway. Which is why between D3 and ETT/CE there is a 75-100 crore spread on the final gross (depending on who you believe). ETT and CE would have required excellent WOM to get to D3’s somewhat disappointing final number. But on day 1 or even over the weekend there’s only so much more you can do irrespective of screens and so forth. And again I’d say here that the problem is everyone has bought into this day 1 debate and so forth. Obviously big films do better at every step but that’s not the only definition of an initial. CE was over-performing in week 1, D3 with stronger WOM would have done a lot more over the week. But the more incredible gap would have still come in weeks 2, 3 and so on. Which is what we saw with 3I. Again Dabanng matched its week 1 (a year later or whatever it was) but after that? And this is nothing new. This has always been the case. Which is why trending is important. Even in Hollywood if it were only about the first weekend many films would be in the running but ultimately only a handful get to the TDK or Avengers kind of total let alone the Cameron ones. Because once more beyond a point there’s only so much you can maximize the initial audience. There’s a certain core that shows up for most big films. You have to get the rest of the audience involved in the same frenzy over the first few days and this is harder. This difference shows up later.

And so to reiterate D3 is in a class of its own. At least for some years now. And by the way the ‘Hrithik-made-this-franchise’ thing is also bull. the first Dhoom with no established star was one of the biggest grossers in its year. It did about 30 when the best SRK films were doing only this much or slightly more than this. The Krrish sequel didn’t open anything like the Dhoom sequel. Do co-stars and so on matter? Yes! But I say this in every situation. There’s a reason why ETT opened like no other Salman film. Katrina similarly is a part of the Bang Bang story. Abhishek was going through his most successful phase when D2 opened (the trailers had parity too unlike D3), Asihwarya was there, Bipasha part of the team. All these things matter. One can’t do this selectively. Deepika was a big part of the CE story. I am quite sure Priyanka here would have hugely reduced the film’s number. So all these factors should always be taken into account. But D3 is just a different deal. Until something else proves otherwise. By the way if you asked me I’d say that the single most impressive box office story over a decade or more is Ghajini. Yes I think it’s more impressive than even 3I for certain reasons.

I may be wrong but I don’t think I saw anybodys number where the difference between D3 and CE is 75 to 100 crore.

D3 was more than CE and CE was at least 25 crore more than ETT so it’s not right to put CE and D3 together just as it’s not right to put ETT and CE together.

          • Meant 100 crores or so between ETT and D3 and 75 or so between CE and D3. Of course if you want to take the highest possible numbers in each case or use those sources you have probably a 90 crore or more differential between ETT and D3 and about 60 between CE and D3.

            Like

          • The difference between D3 and CE was only around 50 crores at best.CE did 225 and D3 did around 270. CE had to contend with OUATIMD , madras cafe and satyagraha in consecutive weeks that’s a huge deal. If one goes by BOI CE did 205 and D3 did 60 crores more than that. The first day of D3 was massive for a holiday but if one adds the Thursday night shows gross of 6 crores to CEs first day gross of 29 crores there is hardly any difference in the two totals for day 1 . Of course D3 had more footfalls and opened bigger as it was a working day. D3 had a very strong weekdays compared to CE which actually didn’t match the poor WOM. Second week onwards it behaved as per the WOM. By week 3 D3 was hardly grossing anything. CE without any competition would have come closer to D3 and made up for the difference in the first week IMO.

            Like

          • think Taran had that spread too. because he had D3 closer to 285. He factored in the Tamil-Telugu gross as well but I think he did that for CE also. In any case the spread with CE was a bit too great (versus BOI). And the later week numbers have looked a bit dubious to me. My own instinct here is it didn’t do much more than 3I. I have never quite bought the 225 number here. And BOI have generally not been in the habit of reducing SRK’s numbers.

On the rest I don’t think you can simply add up different days. It’s not as if the final number is the same no matter how you split it up. If we did this we’d also have to make lots of other assumptions elsewhere. At the very least we should start adding up all the other films that had preview shows in the same way. I simply don’t buy CE could have got to a D3-like number. Those three films weren’t serious competition the way they performed (Madras Cafe was the best of the lot). Is it the same as not having competition? Of course not. But it’s quite a leap to say that because of those three CE didn’t get to D3’s total!

A film once it’s big enough at the box office cannot be derailed by this sort of thing to such a significant extent. RNBDJ released two weeks or so before Ghajini but even after the latter’s onslaught it still trended well and the reason it couldn’t have done any better was that even without competition it just didn’t open that big. Ghajini too wouldn’t have grossed more even without a relatively stable RNBDJ in later weeks. Now you had Singham and ZNMD overlap to some extent, both films did well, trended well but the audience wasn’t common here. Completely different actually. OSO and Saawariya released together. Over the weekend the latter did superbly and had it kept its pace both films would have had very big totals. But OSO without Saawariya couldn’t have had that total on its own! And the latter completely tanked after the weekend and OSO still couldn’t increase its numbers.

But even if I accept your CE point that still doesn’t prove the Dhoom franchise isn’t in a league of its own. We know the WOM was quite mixed here. Otherwise this film with D2-like acceptance might have done way more than 300, maybe even 350. Actually if one just looked at the D2 trajectory D3 should have done 375 or more. Even going by the Dhoom 1 trending it should have cleared 300 easily.

          • by the way I do agree with Jay. Farah Khan’s mega circus certainly has a shot at a huge number. But whether Farah Khan makes the sort of film that can itself last more than 2 weeks can also be doubted. Week 1 is not in question. But D3 of course shows that to get to 300 you need a pretty solid week 3 as well. Not impossible for this film, just unlikely. Farah Khan too just throws everything at the wall hoping something or the other will stick for everyone in the audience! And again these days the huge week 1 isn’t a question for a number of big films. When films like Ek Villain or 2 States or BMB do 100 crores I think we should change expectations for these ‘biggest’ films. But in any case it’s Hirani who has a shot given his (and of course Aamir’s) trending record. He doesn’t need the biggest week 1 ever, just something in that overall high end range and the rest is about trending. HNY though needs the biggest week 1. This sort of film is really about the big bang initially and then enough of a follow-through later on. Of course there can always be surprises. Maybe Farah Khan has made a film with more soul! Stranger things have happened!

        • The only reason they didnt release it on Tuesday is to get a full 2 week run before the next biggie. If it released on Tuesday it would have released to big numbers but will still not be able to make up for the shortfall between Friday and Monday. I am expecting this to start in the 20 to 25 range on Friday. There is no data to prove Pre-Eid shortfall because we havent seen huge releses in the Ramzan period but IMO this is just like the pre-Diwali phase where the effect is more being an Hindu festival. And we have seen Pre-Diwali effect in many movies in the last 3 years where 2 days before Diwali movie doesnt do great in the afternoons and evenings but after Diwali just takes off even if it is a badly received movie like Ra-1 or JTHJ or a comparatively better received one like Krrish 3.

….he he you really think so?? When was the last big star / hyped movie you watched with some soul ? Each year fans of most of the stars wait for that big ticket movie but this botchiness is universal and cuts across all major actors these days. Whether you are waiting for Kites / Krish 3 or ETT / Jai Jo or even a highly anticipated Dhoom3. We discuss CE and box-office numbers so fondly now as if it were a modern age Mughal-e- Azam but I remember watching that movie and coming out avouching never to waste my time and money on srk ever again. He was so bad in the movie that it was embarrassing to realize we were idolizing him few years back. That movie had nothing except decent cinematography, a good bit of Deepika with a funny twang and that train sequence which too srk tried to jar by his brand ambassadorship of Nokia phone and hammering the model no on our heads 3/4 times within 5 minutes…

One thing I don’t realize and this applies to senior Bachchan too – where does the craft suddenly vanish. I mean with age and experience you are supposed to get better at it but in all the cases I have seen deterioration and they suddenly resort to hamming their way out in big ticket movies. Why couldn’t they just be same if not better? Don’t they realize they were idolized for what they were or the way they walked , talked and in some instances fought and the swagger which came naturally to them and not for trying to be what they are…How you yearn to have your star just be himself in the movie and not to put on a show of coolness…. I remember reading salman’s interview some 5/6 years back in times of India and before he took to this new found super-stardom where he clearly said I don’t want to know what works for me with audience because the day an actor realizes ‘that’ would be the end and it will become a show thereon. ….. I thought that made sense and must be some wisdom shared by his father due to age/experience and look what he is doing now…. Mind you it’s not repetition which bugs you but trying to be Salman of dabangg / wanted… and failing at it because it comes across so wannabe…

May be this stems from the fact at heart most of us Indians are narcissist lot and turn megalomaniacs pretty soon. This is not restricted to just filmdom but generally in all fields we Indians excel in…..

True stats on demographics in India is not available. This has been the case since Pre-Independence. Some say that the Dalits/Untouchables are the true majority. I don’t know if that is the case but for many reasons, in India (as well as in many other countries) demographic stats are subject to a lot of fudging.

More important is the fact that overall stats do not matter as much as the overall stats on actual consumers. Hence group A may just be 23% of the population but may very well be 40% of the consumers. For example supporters of Israel in US are just a handful but because the majority is silent these voices matter disproportionately more.

Here is a new marketing strategy and the timing is good. Should be a fun show due to the cast and SRK usually does good amount of homework for these stage shows and they are more professional in presentation than some of his contemporaries.

This marketing does make sense since overseas is turning into a huge territory and may soon eclipse India net collections. Understand D3 stands at some 500 cr worldwide if you count china and Japan releases. One of the reason big movies with stars and little focus on content are still being made is due to recovery of a huge amount through the overseas run.

There is a school of thought that says that if you do not find satisfaction within your existing relationship, you start looking elsewhere for that satisfaction. In that vein, I think a lot of these critics are missing “deeper meanings” in their own life, and in desperation seek that in BOLLYWOOD.

Recently I read bits and pieces of former President Warren Harding’s “love letters” to his mistress. Forget the salacious nature of those letters, but for a moment wonder what if he lived in our age, how would he express those feelings in emails ? Worse still in text messages ? I have no doubt that without the cushion of the hand written letter medium, President Harding would have perished the thought of such an exercise.

Everything has its own purpose and use. We don’t use an iPad to create substantial content, we use a desktop. iPad is the wrong platform for such activity. Hence when a critic looks for life’s meaning in Bollywood films, he just displays his own ignorance.

  12. BO update: ‘Kick’ fetches a thunderous, mind-boggling start!
    By Taran Adarsh, July 25, 2014 – 13:56 IST

East. West. North. South… As expected, KICK has fetched a roaring start at the ticket window. The start in the domestic market was fantabulous, despite the fact that the film has opened in the holy month of Ramadan [pre-Eid days]. Although it’s a bit too early the gauge the business of the film in Week 1, it’s a foregone conclusion that the film will pack an unprecedented total, with the business getting a big, big boost from Eid onwards.

With no major release till ENTERTAINMENT [which arrives on 8 August], KICK is expected to have a dream run at the box-office.

      Friday 25 July 2014 11.30 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Kick has taken an excellent opening of 70-75% on average. The start is extraodinary considering it is is pre Eid. Some places have taken that 90-100% start but other places are lower. Despite it being Pre Eid the opening is similar to the initial of Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express but those films maintained well throughout the day even on the odd show timings.

This will be tough for Kick as many multiplexes have lower rates in the morning so that brings in a big audience and Muslim dominated cities will see lower collections after the first day first show craze subsides at single screens. The opening in the morning is like a 30 crore nett plus first day but as mentioned above pre Eid is likely to hit it at some point of the day.

Krrish 3 was released on pre Diwali and the initial of Kick is far better than that film and if the first day collections come out over 25 crore nett it will be phenomenal.

This is like a crore less than D3 and this film is releasing in Pre-Eid, on a working day was not an event film, was not a sequel and has only 1 saleable hero. I am pretty sure though tomorrow it will drop by around 20%.

  18. Kick Challenges Biggest Opening Days On Pre Eid Release
    Friday 25 July 2014 20.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Kick is challenging the biggest openings of all time as after a huge start it has maintained pace pretty well despite pre Eid. Dhoom 3, Ek Tha Tiger and Chennai Express all had opening days in the 30-32 crore nett range and it is not out of the question that Kick can join them which would be simply historic if it happens.

There are late evening and night shows to come and pace could slacken slightly but still collections will not be far off the 30 crore nett mark and anything above 25 crore is extraordinary as the film will have bumper weekdays as a large section of the muslim population will come out on and after Tuesday.

East Punjab is the only circuit which hardly has any Ramadan affect and that circuit may possibly put up an all time record opening day collection. Bihar which has a heavy Muslim population has crazy figures and is also challenging Dhoom 3 opening day figures. Delhi/UP, CI and Rajasthan are 5-10% less. A Muslim dominated Nizam/Andhra may touch 1.75 nett crore which is 15% less than Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 which is remarkable for pre Eid.

  21. Kick: Record Day 1 Expected
by Rohini Nag (July 25, 2014)

The much-anticipated directorial debut by Sajid Nadiadwala, Kick, took a gigantic opening this morning. This Salman Khan–Eid combo is expected to lock day one at a new day 1 record, Rs 27-30 crore or may be more. The film, which also features Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in vital roles, is expected to enjoy a much bigger weekend. The film released with Khan’s fans more than eager to watch him on the big screen after his outing in January, so its success at the ticket counter is no surprise.

In Mumbai, Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines says, “Kick took an opening of more 90 per cent and was also house full in many centres across India and in Mumbai as well. The film has opened with excellent numbers and we expect it to reel in Rs 10 crore today.”

In Delhi-UP, Brijesh Tandon, HK Tandon and Company adds, “The response to the film is spectacular, and despite Ramzan, the film is enjoying a great day at the ticket window. We expect it to earn Rs 5 crore today. The weekend will clock magical numbers.”

In East Punjab, Jaspal Dhingra of Nanaksar Pictures says, “Salman Khan and Eid is a combination that is outstanding for the box office. The film will definitely bring in Rs 2.75 crore today and the weekend will be massive. Let’s not forget the Tuesday Eid holiday, which will be register bumper collections. “

In Rajasthan, Gaurrav Gaur of O’Real Imagination remarks, “Kick has opened to an impressive response in Rajasthan. The film has garnered a 90-per cent opening and had impressive advance booking for the evening shows. Khan has returned with a bang and today the film will collect Rs 1.5 crore in Rajasthan.”

Ravi Machchar of Sahyog Films in Nizam says, “Kick opened to a fabulous start during the 9 am show but by noon, the film grew to 100-per cent occupancy. The rest of the shows today are almost house full. We expect this movie to garner Rs 1.5 crore by the end of the day.”

In West Bengal, Debashish Dey of Aum Moviez reveals, “Salman Khan is back with his larger-than-life movies and, with Kick, we are expecting business to grow by the night shows. Day one will wrap at Rs 1.3 crore.”

BH Basha of Bahar Enterprise remarks, “The film opened to 90-per cent occupancy in most centers in Mysore and continued to gain momentum during the day. Salman Khan is back with a film that appeals to his audience in a grand manner. Kick will collect around Rs 1 crore today.”

Rakesh Singh of Maa Sona Films in Bihar concludes, “The film is expected to earn Rs 70 lakh here in Bihar today. Salman Khan has given his fans a spectacular Eid.”

    • Kick Takes Bumper Opening; Housefull Already
by Box Office India (July 25, 2014)

Salman Khan-starrer Kick has launched the second half of the year with a bumper opening, with some cinemas already running housefull shows. The film, which released in 4,000 screens all over India and is a solo release, took a 90-per cent opening across territories. It is a veritable Eid treat for the actor’s fans and movie-goers in general. The film, which is Sajid Nadiadwala’s debut film as a director, also features Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. It is expected to turn in bumper business over the weekend as tickets are already sold out in many territories.

      Rajesh Thadani, Multimedia Combines, Mumbai

As expected, Kick opened with 90-per cent occupancy, in spite of the fact that today is a working day and the actor’s Muslim fans have not yet watched the film. Single-screens are running housefull shows all over India and in Mumbai as well. The response is mind-blowing. This is a family entertainer and Khan’s fans are making a beeline for cinemas.

Brijesh Tandon, HK Tandon and Company, Delhi-UP

Anything Salman Khan touches becomes a hit and he’s back with a new style of action in his latest release, Kick. Morning shows in UP saw 100-per cent occupancy and 90 per cent in Delhi. Business is bound to double by evening.

Jaspal Dhingra, Nanaskar Enterprises, East Punjab

Cinema halls are overflowing, especially single-screens. Kick’s opening is even better than Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 was and, remember, his Muslim fans are yet to watch the film. On Tuesday, cinemas will be super-packed. The film took an almost 100 per cent opening in East Punjab.

      Vijay Kher, NR Multimedia, CP

Kick took a terrific opening today as audiences were waiting for Salman Khan’s Kick to release. In CP, we have been running shows that are 98-per cent full since morning and advance booking for the evening shows is complete. Expect a mind-blowing weekend. In CP, we released the film in 257 screens.

Debashish Dey, Aum Moviez, West Bengal

In West Bengal, Kick released in 225 screens and every screen is witnessing occupancy of around 95 per cent since morning. The Muslim audience has not yet watched the film and they will watch it only on Tuesday. Many single-screens are overflowing with movie-goers. This is one of Salman Khan’s best films to date.

      Rakesh Singh, Masona Films, Bihar

In Bihar, everyone waits for Salman Khan’s films and, after Jai Ho earlier this year, it’s a double bonanza for his fans. Kick opened to housefull shows in most single-screens in Bihar and around 80 per cent in multiplexes. But after this evening, shows will run house full till Tuesday.

      Jeetu Khandelwal, Movie Pioneers, Orissa

Kick is so far one of the best films by Salman Khan and it opened with 90-per cent occupancy in Orissa. The response is mind-blowing and advance booking for tomorrow evening’s shows is all sold out. So expect a bumper weekend.

      BH Basha, Bahar Enterprise, Mysore

The film is doing extremely well and opened at 70 per cent. From the second show, occupancy is almost 80 per cent. Kick has opened even better than Dhoom 3 did and it is poised to set new records. It seems Khan’s fans can’t get enough since they are getting to watch what he does best – action.

Ravi Machhar of Sajyog Films, Nizam

I would say ‘Ramzan mein Eid’. The film took a terrific opening and opened to 100 per cent occupancy. Think about it… Khan’s Muslim fans have not yet come to cinemas as Ramzan is underway. Imagine what Tuesday will be like. Kick has ‘blockbuster’ written all over it.

    • Kick Has Huge First Day
      Saturday 26 July 2014 11.30 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Kick had a huge opening day as it grossed around 26 crore nett. The film looked it would get a higher number when it opened by eventually collections in places like UP, Maharashtra, Nizam/Andhra and Gujarat were hit by Ramadan as a chunk of the Muslim population stayed away.

The business is extraordinary for the pre Eid period. Even a 22-23 crore nett total would have been huge but the film has gone over 25 crore nett. Rajasthan gave the best performance as it went to near record levels. The areas which under performed will do better from Tuesday onwards.

Kick has recorded the fourth highest opening day ever and the second highest non holiday opening day ever. The decision to come on Friday rather than on Eid has proved correct as a 26 crore nett total is probably more than the producers expected on Pre Eid.

      • if I hear the word ‘pre-Eid’ once more I’ll start feeling queasy! Talk about abusing a word (or phrase). This “heavy Muslim population” somehow prevents the film from being record-breaking but can’t prevent from nonetheless putting up some very high numbers. And all those other times when Salman or other big stars have massive numbers that are also not record-breaking must also have released in ‘pre-Eid’ period or whatever! There should be a limit even to propaganda. of course BOI contradict themselves by saying that even 22 crores would have been huge. How did those Muslims let the film add another 3-4 crores? Yesterday they were saying that numbers were so big it could even get into D3 range (day 1). Wonder how that was possible! Because the morning/afternoon shows suggested a stronger number which didn’t materialize by the evening? So how then were Muslims a factor? Of course in this entire discussion the one thing that is definitely not possible is the film slowing down a bit because of the audience response or something! The film will do what it will anyway, the numbers should continue to be big for a while. There’s no need to get into this absurdity of saying ‘pre-Eid’ with every sentence! And again these things get discovered overnight. Much as the Diwali scam has been ongoing for some years. At least there absurd and cynical as it might be otherwise you at least have the numbers on your side. Here you’re saying that an 11% national population is holding things hostage! And even in places like Bihar where according to BOI the population is ‘heavy’ (it’s around 16% so yes higher than the national average but they were also saying this for Ahmedabad where it’s 10% and saying it was fine in Delhi where too it is 10%) but of course these are not the sorts of centers which take the film from 26 to 33 crores! Specially when one factors in socio-economic issues. There aren’t all that many Bihari Muslims going to multiplexes! When one looks at those numbers one might also want to check out how many of those folks are even in position to go to multiplexes! the other theaters cannot jack up the gross that much. In Bombay it 20% Muslims but here you still have a very significant Muslim population that can do the multiplex rounds (of course BOI didn’t say anything about Bombay). With pre-Eid certain commentary records have certainly been broken.

        • let’s hope we hear post-Eid and pre-independence day for ‘Entertainment’ with same enthusiasm from BOI.

          • we’ll hear that one day too for a film — ‘oh all the Muslims got tired after the Eid festivities and didn’t show up for the movie the next day’ or ‘Eid day is good as long as the shows are from 4-6’. Similarly ‘pre-Independence day people were so much in the patriotic mood they didn’t feel like checking out a movie’. One day we’ll discover how badly films are affected by Christmas because people go to Church in ‘heavily’ Christian areas of Bombay and Goa and the South.

Why just BOI, even producers acknowledge the existence of BO energy during holidays. That is why everyone tries to get their movies released during holidays. Personally I feel, “absense of competition” for a few week after the release is as good if not better.

But coming back to the topic, without doubt there is substantial demographics that stays away during Diwali Pooja and Pre Eid. I don’t know what percentage but clearly there exist this factor.

Again, no real research has been done on this. I think, given the relatively small theatre capacity (compared to the size of the Indian population), this reduction due to Diwali Pooja or Pre-Eid factors is inconsequential.

But if we knew the real break-up of Indian population or the percentage that stay home, i.e. If we had some good knowledge about these things then it would be worth talking about it. At this point it is just unproven theory.

In the absence of the Pre-Eid factor, all else being equal , Kick would have earned more on Day 1, but overall this will even out during the lifetime of Kick. The overall numbers will reflect the reality. Kick will not suffer because of Pre-Eid,

But movies like CE (but not limited to CE) do suffer irreparable damage because of competition. CE’s overall numbers would have been definitely much more in the absence of Ekta Kapoor’s movie. Or movies like D3 (but not limited to D3), do have an unmerited advantage because of absence of competition. D3’s overall numbers would have been definitely much less in the presence of any half worthy competition. If CE did not have competition or D3 did have competition, their domestic numbers would have been perhaps identical.

Today the availability of theatre and or weather have a bigger impact on BO than available demographics.

Yes, in the case of CE, the business dictated the unusualy higher retention. A normal movie (less successful one), would have held back less theaters. Hence in this regard, the merits of CE helped CE, BUT the issue here is that without the competition, CE would have held back even more. Those extra theates in the second/third week would have made a huge difference (talking about records).

Ekta’s movie was not that good. Yes a case can be made it would have suffered less without CE. But we are talking about less pain, a different matter. UNDER NO circumstances can we claim that CE cost Ekta a success that her movie merited.

Look at SOS, it too cost JTHJ some (and vice versa), but SOS had substance (as per the audience) and inspite of JTHJ got itself to a hit status. Both SOS and JTHJ would have been better without the presence of the other.

These are cases of BO suffering because of competition.

The day 80-100% of the revenue is generated on the opening then yes we will say it is all about the opening. It is not yet the case.

Then again “trending” requires the 2nd/3rd week.

As things stand, it would be impossible for any movie to set records if it faces competition. For records, apart from the movie to be good, it needs a few clear weeks.

What I don’t get is when people declare that they don’t like “Apple Pie” , and that they only like “Beard Papa’s Cream Puffs”, YET they want to critique an Apple Pie. There needs to be some simple rule in life, if you say you don’t get (or appreciate) the difference between Chicago Style Pizza Vs New York Style Pizza Vs Neapolitan Pizza then you loose the right to comment/criticize about Pizza. In order to critique you need to first posses a certain amount of love and passion for it.

The usual cheers and whistles that I’ve come to expect from Salman week ones just weren’t there (the only laughs and claps were for Nawazuddin’s funny dialog towards the end). 5-6 people walked out well before the film ended, and overall I just did not get any positive vibe from the audience at all. Now this is just one show, and perhaps morning shows — even weekend ones — aren’t representative, but it was striking.

As for me, I thought the film was terrible. Just awful: Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin were good, and Salman had some nice moments (alas most of those are already given away in the trailer), but this was a very far cry from Wanted or Dabangg, much less anything else. And the music was just noise (the Nargis Fakhri item number is not only bad beyond belief, but suffers from laughable choreography)…

When Jai Ho underperformed, a big debate ensued over whether Salman’s Muslim fans had deserted him after his open show of support to Narendra Modi. Now, some of the same people who vehemently endorsed this view on the online forums, and who also have this general notion that Salman’s fan base is largely restricted to Muslim rickshaw-drivers and the ilk, are equally vehement on the idea that Ramdaan is having no effect on Kick’s collections.

So, only week two collections will decides where it is heading….The audience feedback is much much better than ETT and Fans are enjoying like anything….Salman stardom is at its peak, he needs at-least one release like kick every year to keep his fans happy and that is enough to enter 200 club every year then he can always experiment like tingu or Kingu by associating with top directors, either to give record breaking collection or record breaking disasters!

Kick had a very strong Saturday despite being affected by pre eid in places like UP and Nizam. The film went exactly the opposite on Friday to what happened on Saturday. Friday stated huge and then some circuits slowed down but on Saturday multiplex business was super strong in evening enabling it cover the difference in the morning shows.

The film collected a huge 26 crore nett on Saturday which is same level as Friday as Mumbai circuit managed to grow well despite Delhi/UP seeing a drop.

The film has now collected 52 crore nett in two days and is heading for a 80 crore nett plus weekend. The film is easily the biggest hit of the year till date and is almost sure to be the first blockbuster of the year.

  34. Kick collection of 52+ crores in 2 days is very good figure as it is pre ramdaan period and non holiday period. Lets not argue on this. If what i said above and also section of bo experts, is true then Sunday should figures should cross minimum of 32 crore and Tuesday or Wednesday figures should touch again more than 32 crores which will take the total tally of week one figure to around 170+ crores and it will have a chance to cross 200 cr in 10 days just like dhoom 3. Otherwise, Mr. Satyam is right, and i will accept the fact that Kick is underperformed in comparision with dhoom3….

But there is a scene, where you just cannot help and say “What’s in God’s name is this ?”. After robbing Nawazuddin, Salman is shown trying to “sneak” away in broad daylight. Cops are everywhere and all with their gun trained at Salman. Yet Salman is shown as if he is trying to slip sway. Now is the middle of this major police action , out of nowhere, kids swarm in just when Randeep Hooda is about to shoot Salman. Because of the kids, Randeep orders the cops to hold the fire. AT THAT moment the thought in my mind was, “Salman is lucky this is not Israel”.

As pointed out before your position is not based on any knowledge but your hatred for minorities. You want the slightest reason to rant and rave against the minorities.

These “Bad Guys”, sure enough are not “Good Guys”. They are thugs no doubt, but they are mercenaries rather than ideologues. They job, as has been now acknowledged by the world, is to create “headlines”. In Iraq they have not spared any group or any religion, why ? They do everything possible to create chaos and HEADLINES. Their job is to create conditions for further looting of the target country’s national wealth (and further colonization).

Take for example Maki, China was gaining the upper hand in there (which has rare earth and minerals), guess what ?, suddenly there thugs emerged in Mali, which gave the justification for the French to go in and “take over”. After that take over, “the problem was solved” and the thugs and the headlines disappeared. Those thugs simply existed to block China and impose French control. Ideology had nothing to do with this. After they did their job and got paid handsomely, they disappeared. Those who understand these matters, see this pattern repeated again and again.

Anywhere there is a problem, which the powers to be want to solve, these thugs emerge. The names keep changing, in Nigeria they are Boko Haram, elsewhere they are ISIS etc etc But look closely, you will find that they go about in exactly the same manner (kill indecriminately in the name of a religion which forbids killing), SIMPLY to impose external control. ISIS will eventually enable the division of Iraq into three parts. Then after their work is done and they are paid, they will disappear.

These thugs are the modern day “Jaanisari”. Mohsin Ahmed in his book “Reluctant Fundamentaliat” talks about this better. They are instrument of take over. I seriously doubt that an educated person like you don’t get this. But you are a victim of your dislike for minorities.

      • Once again, you allude to another Conspiracy. All these people who point to Options Trading pre 9/11 never state the simple fact that the market was already Oversold in the days preceding 9/11. The Big Boyz (ie Market Movers) were already positioned for a move higher, ie they were net Long. So there is nothing weird about higher call option volumes before 9/11. However, the unexpected 9/11 event pushed the market into even further oversold territory, prompting Greenspan to unleash the Fed canons. Money was made cheaper to borrow, which was used by the Market Movers to go even more Net Long in those 2 days after trading began. The subsequent move higher in fact took the market to an Overbought status, which got resolved soon in the spring of 2002.
As someone who trades on a daily basis, let me say that you can take a snapshot of the market at any given moment, and you will find glaring anomalies in some sectors/stocks/options etc which defy logic. There is no doubt that insider-trading takes place, but most of it is related to Market Movers with better available intelligence than the average investor. The small guy would have thunk that the Market should’ve crashed further and burned, but weirdly, it went up in a hockey stick just 2 days after trading started. Those in the know cashed it big time.
The same logic applied to the Flash Crash. The market was severely overbought in May 2010. The Big boyz were already Net Short. So they profited massively from that Flash Crash. But no one is going to tell you that.
I know this sounds extremely cliched: The market is a living-breathing creature, that is influenced by millions of minds. Fortunately, no one is big enough to move the market, except the Fed, which is the only entity to ever influence its direction.
All these market-consipiracy mongers generally have no skin in the game, and have no idea of what goes on inside the market.

You are making up history or are just plain “unaware”. The market went down by approx 7% ( a lot). In a few years we had new highs (again)

But immediately after 9/11 the market was suspended, and it went down. Calls (what the link talks about) is a SHORT TERM play. Just before 9/11, huge volume of Calls where bought (unusual for that market at that time) on a selected few stocks. These stocks for which the Calls were bought did well while the market went down. The selection of these stocks and the Call volume suggests insider tradIng. Someone knew before hand that the market would go down but these “defense” stocks will go up. Someone was aware of 9/11 in advance and played the market with that info.

I am without doubt simplifying things to make the broad points more understandable. But all this is well documented (by respected and credible professionals).

          • Bandra Dude,
Calls are a only short term play?!? Not long term? Not weekly, monthly, yearly?? So in September, no one held any calls expiring in Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan.. etc etc?? Please, read up some before commenting.

The defensive sector stocks obviously did better because on the day of 9/11, everyone and his brother knew that Bush would go after the perpetrators of 9/11, and there would be a huge boost in defense spending. What do you think happened in the 5 days that the market was closed from 9/11-9/17? There is something called Before-Hours trading. On opening day (9/17), the Defense sector got bid up high, cud not find buyers and slid promptly. RTN opened 20% higher on 9/17, and then promptly dropped 10% on the same day. It did not cross that HOD for another 4 months. The people holding those RTN calls sure did make out well, for only about 1 hr on opening day. They must have been experts to have closed out of their positions in just 1 hr, especially since huge tranches were supposedly closed. And they surely mustve done spectacularly well in a downtrending bid environment starting from the Opening Bell onwards.
Do you think there were no RTN call holders with expiration in subsequent months? Did they do well? In fact, people holding regular crap like MSFT, INTC, etc did much better. MSFT went from a low of $22 on 9/20 to $30 in December, ie in 2 months flat after 9/11. So did the MSFT call holders know about 9/11 in advance?? Would you call each of them a 9/11 Perpetrator? Or just plain lucky? Or trading on actual technical intelligence?

The Market had corrected by more than 25% before 9/11. SPX went from 1500 to 1080ish in the months preceding 9/11. It was at 1092 on 9/10. As I already mentioned in my previous comment, the Market was already OverSold. So the expectation of an upturn in every Technical indicator was already visible. Hence the high volume of calls bought in the days preceding 9/11. On 9/17, it gapped down hard but Greenspan cut interest rates by 2%+ in 2 days, and the market turned sharply higher from 9/21. The SPX went from a low of 945 on 9/21 to almost 1200 in 3 months. The Pros bought even more Calls at that bottom. Who do you think did well??
The supposed 9/11 Call trade, which supposedly benefited an Insider with knowledge of the event, actually benefited anyone who had the guts to be Long the market on 09/10!!

So lets argue on the other side. We even hear that there were 9/11 Insiders who bought Puts, with the knowledge that the market would crash. Would those persons have known that the market would close for 5 days, thus upsetting all the Option Greeks? Draining away time premium? They would surely know that the market would only be trading negatively for 4 days, before Greenspan’s Bazooka shoots it sky high in two more weeks? I would say that such a person must be great at threading needles, bcoz thats exactly what would be required. Because in reality, The Shorts got slaughtered from 9/21 onwards. The SPX was back at 1070 on October 3.

Conspiracy Theorists love to hold a straw in the wind, extrapolate it whichever way they want, publish a few articles, and assume the outcome. It does not matter that rational thought and logic, or visibly conforming events are disproving that assumption.

            http://www.911myths.com/index.php/Put_Options

Kick up, read it and enjoy.

“The AMR put trading on September 10 further reveals how trading that looks highly suspicious at first blush can prove innocuous. The put volume of AMR on September 10 was unusually high and actually exceeded the call volume by a ratio of 6:1—again, highly suspicious on its face. The SEC traced much of the surge in volume to a California investment advice newsletter, distributed by email and fax on Sunday, September 9, which advised its subscribers to purchase a particular type of AMR put options. The SEC interviewed 28 individuals who purchased these types of AMR puts on September 10, and found that 26 of them cited the newsletter as the reason for their transaction. Another 27 purchasers were listed as subscribers of the newsletter. The SEC interviewed the author of the newsletter, a U.S. citizen, who explained his investment strategy analysis, which had nothing to do with foreknowledge of 9/11. Other put option volume on September 10 was traced to similarly innocuous trades.

Another good example concerns a suspicious UAL put trade on September 7, 2001. A single trader bought more than one-third of the total puts purchased that day, establishing a position that proved very profitable after 9/11. Moreover, it turns out that the same trader had a short position in UAL calls—another strategy that would pay off if the price of UAL dropped. Investigation, however, identified the purchaser as a well-established New York hedge fund with $2 billion under management. Setting aside the unlikelihood of al Qaeda having a relationship with a major New York hedge fund, these trades looked facially suspicious. But further examination showed the fund also owned 29,000 shares of UAL stock at the time—all part of a complex, computer-driven trading strategy. As a result of these transactions, the fund actually lost $85,000 in value when the market reopened. Had the hedge fund wanted to profit from the attacks, it would not have retained the UAL shares. ”

and much more in the article. You can either believe hogwash, or you can believe people who ACTUALLY trade. It is upto you.

Like you, they will fabricate a claim that the market in general went up and when you show it went down by almost 7% (and was suspended), they fade away and ask another question. Nothing they say adds up because their statements are not a projection of facts, but a projection of their hate.

As against all the clowns you quote, Lars Schall is the best journalist in finance and the most respected entity on this subject (by officials). He has quoted the people in authority, the people in power, the very people who are responsible for the law and order (and related matter).

At the very least please understand that by showing me works of other fellow hate mongers, you subtract from your own credibility.

By ignoring statements from the authority (e.g. German Central Bank President, Ernst Welteke), you confirm your sickness of mind. Read Lars’ report and see for yourself who he quotes.

It appears that you want to say anything, even fabricate facts to fester hate. You want to do anything to ignore the truth that will actually dissolve hate. My only question is do you really think more hate solves anything ?

Ironically, life today has turned YOU into a minority. Tell me, when someone in US says anything to incite hate against you, how do you feel ? When someone tries to deny you anything (or even reduced access), how do you feel ? Hopefully you get it that a democracy is only as strong as it minorities.

  38. Scarlett Johansson Powers ‘Lucy’ to No. 1 at Box Office
    By BROOKS BARNES JULY 27, 2014 12:49 PMJuly 27, 2014 1:33 pm

Scarlett Johansson punched out “Hercules” at the weekend box office. Her new science-fiction thriller, “Lucy,” was No. 1 at North American movie theaters, taking in an estimated $44 million and proving that her name on the marquee (and pouty picture on the poster) could anchor a wide-release movie. “Lucy,” which Universal Pictures marketed squarely on Ms. Johansson’s shoulders, cost about $40 million to make and was directed by Luc Besson. The film performed particularly well in theaters with screens marketed as Premium Large Format, which charge higher prices.

“Hercules,” which cost Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer about $100 million to make, sold an estimated $29 million in tickets, according to Rentrak, which compiles box-office data. This latest cinematic take on the Greek demigod — starring Dwayne Johnson and directed by Brett Ratner — raised entertainment industry eyebrows by receiving a PG-13 rating despite its depictions of visceral violence. Paramount and MGM expect “Hercules” to make most of its money overseas, where Mr. Johnson — a.k.a. the Rock — has a significant following. Paramount said on Sunday that “Hercules” took in an additional $28.7 million over the weekend in 26 foreign markets.

Third place went to the 20th Century Fox sequel “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which took in about $16.4 million, for a three-week domestic total of $172.1 million.

        • Krrish 3 was another film where the ‘official’ gross was exaggerated so much it became a standard joke. The film was just poor all round and the opening reflects this. There’s no way it should be bottom of that list. As for Salman the one thing one cannot debate here is that with all the other stars the opening depends on other factors too. Salman appears in nothing films and gets them going. But the other side of this is also true. The possibility of better trending and the highest possible grosses is also foreclosed for him. After this many films one can’t keep putting up this ‘imaginary’ (if he trended better he’d do this and that). Because that never happens. Given the kinds of films he does this is hardly surprising but the point is that here too a star’s judgment is in play. Now by and large this deal works for him because his films aren’t that expensive. But it’s different for ETT or even Kick. Here too the initial probably makes it safe for everyone but these can hardly be big successes with that box office trajectory (of course Kick might do better than ETT, don’t know yet). What this means is that red hot as Salman has been if you’re a producer you don’t want to try Ra One or anything super-expensive with him either. Because the chances of trending even decently are low. Which means you have to make most of it at the front end and there’s a limit to how much you can recover this way! Now in fairness most blockbusters these days follow this logic because they’re not designed to go the distance. Much easier to make a film with a star who can get people in and then throw everything at the wall and maximize that initial. To do more than this you actually have to attempt a better film so that even if the initial isn’t the highest possible you have a certain confidence about your film and moreover while you’re obviously looking for success you’re not just looking for headlines about 100 crore and 200 crore clubs and all the other junk everyone from Taran to Nahta to BOI or whoever throws out (records being broken every weekend everywhere!). But this sort of sincerity is rare in Bollywood. You have mostly Aamir doing this or Hirani, maybe a few others but not as consistently as them. And so these are films designed for ad campaigns at each end. Before release the film promises to be just the extension of all the advertising. Rather than a trailer working to enhance a film’s appeal it is the very opposite, the film becomes an afterthought to the advertising campaign. I look forward to the day when just trailers will be released and people will make a 100 crores this way (why not?!). We’re already doing this. The film releases and right away the other campaign starts about how many crores and records and what not. After a week, at the most two, the dust settles and everyone moves on. No one really cares about what kind of film it has been. The entire film just exists to support these two ad campaigns. Not surprisingly the films then are mostly junk. Utter junk. And one can then choose what kind of junk is somewhat more watchable than any other kind. Whether it’s a filmmaker like Hirani doing a film with Aamir or a film like Bang Bang the only conversation is about these campaigns. You incentivize junk this way. And this paradigm works best for Salman (or Akshay, though he’s mismanaged things royally over time despite being in the sort of position once where he could have done a Salman). Any other star still needs either a somewhat better film or at least cannot do this sort of thing regularly. With Salman there’s nothing more to it. No one wants him to do anything better. But let’s not just blame the stars or guys like Taran and Nahta. Consider how people discuss this stuff on blogs. They’re willing to support any kind of junk to support their stars, they too are not interested in anything besides the box office story, their entire discussion is about how many crores when the moment the film is launched and through the time when it’s released. Sadly even some of the Aamir fans have gotten into this game. And to the extent that when there’s something like Talaash everyone brings up ‘script problems’ (gimme a break!). So these fans try to convert Aamir into Salman. Every other star fan does this too but given Aamir’s choices it’s a particular travesty in his case. But in any case this entire conversation operates at this basement level. One shouldn’t only blame Taran and others like him. They’re playing to a clientele too.

    • Kick Has Outstanding First Weekend

      Box Office India Trade Network

Kick grossed a huge 82 crore nett in its third weekend as the business on Sunday went to around 30 crore nett approx as per early estimates. The collections are simply outstanding for pre Eid as they came with some territories performing below expectations.

Nizam/Andhra and UP have been worst hit as both these sectors have under performed and these areas should see a good pick up from Tuesday onwards. East Punjab which has little Ramadan affect and Rajasthan are best. East Punjab set an all time record on Sunday as it had the highest collections ever for a single day. Rajasthan was close to record business with weekend business just 10 lakhs nett less than Dhoon 3.

Gujarat was phenomenal on Sunday showing 1 crore nett higher collections than Saturday. The film will have excellent collections on the weekdays and how big they will be depends on the jump on Tuesday and it has chances to go towards the Sunday collections or at least close to it.

Lol kick was such a joke even if you leave your brains behind as suggested by reviewer. Hope this will be the first and last directorial venture of Sajid Nadiadwala who was producer all his life until bhaijaan coaxed him into direction too. Sab chalta hai….

There are a lot of brain dead movies of sallu bhai but this one takes the cake for being so haphazard and nonsensical. For good 30 minutes he has hair issues and looked and acted like sunny paaji. Atleast bodyguard had good choreography by mudassar and vaibhavi merchant but here too he hired Ahmed Khan ..generally a loser except for that gem in 1995 for Rangeela.

If bhai really wants to do so many favors to people , why not use his stardom to hire top notch technicians like aamir does and make a 300 cr blockbuster and give 5 /10 cr to chawaanichaap directors like Sohail Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala as gift .

Positives: Randeep Hooda was a stark contrast to sallu’s chichorapan and much more manly and acted well within his own mean.

Nawaaz did extremely well and tried to do his Indian villain thingy well and loved him in his brief role….touak !!

As for kick–note that (& this hasn’t been mentioned anywhere)– the BOI numbers as nearly same as taran–which may mean taran has suddenly turned a new leaf (!) or that BOI haven suddenly ‘upped the ante’ since the Indian box office reporting can’t suddenly become accurate.

Kick has held steady collections on Monday with collection likely to show a 50% drop from Friday and be around the 13 crore nett mark. Despite it being pre Eid the Monday will the third or fourth highest ever when a film has not had a holiday on Monday. .

The film is the biggest hit of 2014 but it will be the Tuesday to Friday period which will decide where the film is going in terms of lifetime business. It is possible that the film can remain above the Monday figure for the next three days.

Rajasthan was fantastic on Monday hitting the 1 crore nett mark while UP was again worse hit due to pre Eid sd the UP contribution to the Delhi/UP circuit will just be 1 crore nett. That should change from tomorrow and UP should be the best performing area across India.

        • I gave no chances to Chennai Express but it kept going on weekdays and then on weekends too, so I may be wrong here again but it does not seem to me this will do D-3 or even a CE.

Sometime back after watching a movie I could soundly predict its fate but last couple of years I have lost complete taste and can’t tell good from the bad. Not only that, few of the recent movies of younger actors which were acclaimed and did very well at the box-office and I had missed were disappointments when I saw them. So its very difficult to say anything with certainty these days on movie outcome and the only thing common is that big numbers can be put up only during festive season; otherwise it’s a max 90-110 cr deal even for a well liked movie.

Incidentally as I pointed out BOI too here says Oct 2nd is the best date/week of the year 2014 so Bang Bang is on solid footing.
But here too I have serious doubts on content as Indian movies cannot get their act together in this genre. D-3 was the closest to some sort of reasoning….. If you are trying to make clever/smarty pants movie show us some of the background /planning…

          Q. Why is it that Bang Bang and Haider are still clashing?
Ans. There are so many holidays in that week that none of the makers are prepared to let go which is actually the best week in 2014 as far as potential business is concerned.

But the real joke here is K3! This make a joke for everyone else too but 240? Gimme a break! I think ETT is a bit higher too here. ETT and YJHD were both probably in the same 180-190 range. • not so funny as you misreading my comment.. I think YJHD is more or less accurate. Not really as bothered with a 5-10 crore margin here. Even ETT is ok for the same reason. But when you get into 20 crores or more, that sort of margin, then things become problematic. K3 is probably the most exaggerated number here.

In any case I think most people have a fair sense of what the numbers are. It’s just if you’re a fan of a particular star and have that agenda you’re interested in the most jacked up numbers possible without really caring whether they’re true or not. if CE were at 270 you’d still accept the number (or you’d ‘want’ to accept it)! This is where these things become like those right/left political debates where each side is always pointing out the problems with the other side and refusing to question one’s own. I’ve said more on this before but it’s a way of avoiding responsibility and playing this game where the other has to go first. Since no one does that one can keep hiding behind this logic! Similarly with box office grosses whether I say what I sincerely believe or if I’m pursuing a pro-Aamir agenda or whatever shouldn’t matter to what ‘you’ believe. And it cannot also be the convenient ‘I’ll believe whatever Taran (or whoever) does’. I actually don’t believe most SRK fans or most Hrithik fans are persuaded by those numbers. But yes there are always authentic delusional types who probably do sincerely believe them. Hard to say who falls in what category!

This goes back to my post the other day where I was saying difference between CE and D3 is only around 50 crores Hindi to Hindi comparison and not 75 crores.

( drop of 16 cr from Sunday, a holiday) Tuesday should have added three fourth of of that drop , 12cr at least because it was a national holiday. Assuming a pent up Muslim viewership of 10 cr over the three days, and at least 3/4th of them turned up on Eid, that should have added another 7.5cr. The total should have been : 33.5. If it does only 26cr, then it means, one or all three of these factors: 1. The wom not so good. A drop from Monday to Tuesday. 2. The wom not so good. Jump due to holiday, not much. 3. The lost Muslim viewership due to Pre-Eid not much. So their coming to see the film on Eid hasn’t added all that much.

Stranger things have happened, but I don’t see this getting past CE let alone D3.
The key really is the next 3 days (to beating CE) but even Eid national holiday was not incredible.
If you compare D3 up till Monday, it was around 115 crore (Hindi only) vs. Kick’s 95 crore. That’s a 20 crore shortfall and some of this can be explained by EID, but how much is very debatable and almost answered by EID holiday business.

Tuesday for D3 was Xmas Eve and it went to 21 crore whereas Xmas day (its 6th day of its run) made 24 crore. EID holiday (5th day) is coming in at 26 crore just ahead of D3 6th day Xmas Day. However, EID Holiday “should” have the distinct advantage of an additional 15% of Indians who till that point could not see the movie and now can (and many assume this segment is Salman’s core fanbase!). But it is only producing a figure marginally ahead of D3’s Xmas day (8% ahead) and that too a day “earlier” (6th day vs. 5th day) i.e. D3 is more saturated by the 6th day than Kick is on the 5th day. EID holiday needed to be out of the park, at least 30 crore but its produced a total similar to Friday/Saturday with the added advantage of first time viewers.

I’m sure today will be pretty big but at this point after 5 days its 136 crore vs. 121 crore and D3 will have 24 crore on 6th day. That gap widens more as there is no way Kick is doing business today close to EID holiday today.

CE is more plausible to beat but for that it will really need to post a big 2nd week of 40 crore+ – that is possible but I think that would be the biggest 2nd week for a Salman film so it’s questionable whether that can be achieved.

      Wednesday 30 July 2014 11.30 IST
      Box Office India Trade Network

Kick was fantastic on Eid as it collected a huge 26 crore nett with some circuits recording the highest numbers for the film on Tuesday out of the first five days. Nizam / Andhra which had collected just 55 lakhs on Monday zoomed up to 1.75 crore nett. UP which had just 1 crore nett on Monday went up to 2.75 crore nett. Both these areas were better than day one and Sunday

Gujarat was hit by rains which meant Mumbai circuit did not collect to potential but the rest of the country was excellent. The film has now gone over 120 crore nett in five days and is already the biggest grosser of year.

The film is doing extraordinary business in Rajasthan which is around 9 crore nett in five days and East Punjab which is 12.50 crore nett in five days. In Rajasthan it is heading to be the biggest nett grosser ever but entertainment tax which will be 30% from next week onwards may play spoilsport. Still it will emerge number one in terms of gross business.

Regardless of whether it is the top EID collection or not, KICK has done extremely well. For Sajid and Salman it is an achievement that comes with “bragging rights”.

One thing about KICK that I disagree is Nawazuddin. His act did not seem natural to me, Hooda instead seemed very relaxed & natural. I know that Nawazuddin is a good actor, and that people loved him in Kick, but he has a small role which is quite irritating.

  73. I don’t see any difference between Kick and Jai Ho – the movie and yet kick ends up with a much bigger total. If pressured to make a choice I would say Jai Ho was better in terms of construction and coherence to the plot…whatever it was the director trying to say….

I think the only difference here is timing of release and the hype related to it due to festivities where everyone seems chortling…. Jan 26th was a holiday but next day folks needed to get back to books and studies as Feb / March is mostly exam period.

That initial hype of 4 to 5 days is what all the fuss is about and that’s where Taran, Komal and the Joginders come into play. They come with these big figures and the hyperbole associated with it which is immediately caught on by the news channel / printed media looking for movie masala. The actors are then brought on these channels on 2nd day for interviews on the big opening and success, fans are shown celebrating and with that a lot many stories are created for content and kill time and get free TRPs.
The procrastinating lot then decides to get on the bandwagon or alternately there is so much hoopla on all the channels created that the family members as if they were waiting for this affirmation make it difficult to wait any longer……and the blockbuster is created.

This brings me to the main point – the usual crowd who has gained some sort of respectability like Taran , Komal and BOI who are quoted all over have a lot of say
in the final outcome of box-office and it is not for nothing that they invent these hyperbole of spectacular / unbelievable / monstrous / astounding / astonishing / stunning…..

Anybody here feels there are monetary favors exchanged for this hyperbole or if it is done due to bhaichara and supporting the industry / camp. If yes what is the price on it? is it for just a few bundles of thousands or lacs or does it go into crores as now in India crore se kam toh aajkal koi baat nahin karta…..

Creating an industry within industry is what most of us Indians excel in ….lol !!

    • Now that we have the secret ingredient, all movies should be blockbuster going forward 🙂

There’s no doubt that Taran, Komal, etc are getting monetary rewards from producers/distributors/exhibitors. But I don’t think movies will become hit just by them hyping a movie.

No I don’t say they make movies hit or flop but this stuff works only with big movies and helpful in kick starting the campaign on a good note. Couple of wrong reports by these will have a severe adverse effect.
