  1. Singham Returns To Get Benefit Of Independence Day
    Thursday 14 August 2014 11.00 IST

Singham Returns will get the benefit of Independence Day on day one which is one of the best days of the year for box office collections. This should help it put up a big total on the first day. The real test will begin on Saturday

Singham released in 2011 did very well but the business was very lopsided with almost 50% business came from Mumbai circuit as the film saw huge appreciation in Maharashtra and Gujarat but it was a different story at many other places as appreciation was not there .

Delhi city, East Punjab and West Bengal were poor while UP had average business. The first day holiday will help to an extent in these areas but the key to a big total will be how these areas perform from Saturday onwards. Mumbai, CP Berar and Marathwada side of Nizam circuit are sure shots for the film due to local content. If North India performs for this film it will put up a big number. The film is an action film and has a grander look than the first one and that coupled with the momentum it will have from the holiday gives it a chance to score well in North and Bengal.

  2. Saw Holiday yesterday .. BRILLIANT movie. I am cursing myself to miss this in cinema .. some blame to marketing strategy as well, its promos were completely misleading, not even hinting towards such edge of seat thriller.

I am very confident .. Holiday will remain best movie of 2014, only PK have chances to match the quality.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Kick grossed around 10.25 crore nett in its third week taking its three week business to around 213 crore nett. The film has seen a near 80% drop in week three due to a the release of Entertainment. Below are the weekly figures for the first three weeks

    Week 1 – 1,55,71,00,000
    Week 2 – 47,27,00,000
    Week 3 – 10,25,00,000 approx

    TOTAL – 2,13,23,00,000

Kick is the second biggest grosser of all time after Dhoom 3 beating the 208 crore nett of Chennai Express. Dhoom 3 is still way out in front with business of 260 crore nett. Kick will add another 3-4 crore nett to finish in between the 215-220 crore nett.

  5. Singham Returns Opens Very Well
    Friday 15 August 2014 12.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Singham Returns opened very well with collections around the 65% mark on average. Single screens cross the country were stronger than multiplexes as many opened to full houses.

The film was affected in the South by a Tamil film which was the first choice in Chennai and Bangalore and also to a certain extent in Hyderabad where the same film was dubbed into Telugu. The best opening came in Maharashtra, CP Berar and CI while in the UP, Noida and Ghaziabad opened to strong collections in the North.

The opening is on par with Jai Ho which was the second biggest opener of the year but the difference will be that Singham Returns is a holiday release so collections should hold up through the day which should enable to film to easily get a higher first day number than Jai Ho.

  6. Entertainment Has Low First Week
    Friday 15 August 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Entertainment had a low first week of around 49.50 crore nett and although it remained steady and found appreciation in some circuits on the weekdays the damage had been done with a low weekend.

The film held up well at places over the weekdays but needed to stronger as the weekend was low and big competition and had to sustain against big competition in week two. The film was strong on Monday but fell 20% on both the next days and that is where chance of a decent lifetime total was lost.

Entertainment has the eighth highest first week collections of the year. The film fared best in North and CI while most other circuits performed below bar with low first week collections..

  8. Singham Returns Set For Day One Around 30 Crore Nett
    Friday 15 August 2014 23.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Singham Returns has run riot on day one with collections which are competing with the biggest first day openers of all time. The film is huge at single screens and multiplexes have seen extraordinary occupancies pf 60% plus through the whole day. The first ay collections will be around 30 crore nett or thereabouts.

The film has set records in Rajasthan (allowing for changes in the taxes system) and CI. Gujarat and Maharashtra are also phenomenal and Mumbai could come out a record which could take the collections even higher than 30 crore nett.

North which could have been the weak link has registered huge collections with East Punjab at the level of Kick and Delhi/UP easily surpassing Kick. North India has had a bigger opening than Rohit Shetty’s last film Chennai Express. The film is far the biggest opening ever seen for a film featuring Ajay Devgn or Kareena Kapoor.

      • Amazing. Ajay Devgn’s biggest opener before this was like 12 crores I think, this is 2.5x more. Does this mean Ajay can open as well as the Khans on a holiday because CE had the same director, and almost same release date. Or does it mean that the business has grown? I’m curious to see what HNY on a holiday and PK on a non-holiday put up.

But without a doubt now Rohit Shetty is the #1 director box office wise and it seems it will continue with the SRK movie and Golmaal 4/5/6

I am hesitant to put Ajay in the same league as the Khans/Hrithik because his other recent films opened okayish whereas the Khans/Hrithik keep out dueling one another in terms of opening day/opening week/overall gross records.

Only partially true, Otherwise how do you define Jai Ho’s low opening in the range of younger brigade’s openings.
How do you describe Ajay’s movie and SRK’s most anticipated with biggest record expectation grossing in the same range ?

        • When was Chennai express ever SRK’s biggest and most anticipated project? Literally no one was excited when the movie was announced, after the trailer came out people said it would make less than 100 Crores. His fan base was more interested in JTHJ and HNY before CE released. HNY, yes that could be considered his most anticipated project. And the Rohit Shetty factor can’t be ignored either.

        • This is masala potboiler and 6.6 is very good for it. singham is more popular among SS viewers who dont know of IMDB. unless it has some intellectual type movie, dont expect much beyond 7 rating. This is still second highest rated south remake after ghajini. Aamir has huge fan following among multiplex audience and ghajini catered equally to SS and multiplex audience. Singham’s business was very weak in multiplex, it was ZNMD which created rage in multiplex just a week before singham and continued to do so.
And ZNMD is 8.1 on imdb, Ghajini 7.3 and i dont agree if you say ZNMD is more loved than Ghajini even if you consider purely multiplex audience. Though, ZNMD had enough pseudo intellect elements to get rave ratings from IMDB users.

Just wait and watch how Bang Bang is going to create history at boxoffice. He will put a seal to all records and no movie in near future will dare to come close to that in terms of quality or records. Hrithik has been giving sleepless nights to Bachchan who is still trying to launch his son but Hrithik is the biggest obstacle in his way. Now by licking shoes of Amir and Srk, Bachchan has been able to give a chance to his son just to remain relevant in present scenario but Hrithik is going to crush him again.

Last year when CE did humongous business, SRK fans were in denial mode regarding Rohit Shetty’s contribution in its success mentioning the fact that with AD, Rohit was able to give 100 crs movies only conveniently ignoring the fact that SRK himself were having low 100 crs movies on his name before CE.

This actually puts forward the point which is well accepted in Hollywood also that BO is not purely derived from stardom alone, there are many other factors which affect box office of a movie.

The star can hardly be discounted but everything gets much more magnified when it’s a certain kind of project, a very successful director, the right actress, etc.. any or all of the above. All of this is common sense but there are those who want to pretend that it’s only about the star and the rest doesn’t matter. That is simply false in any industry of the world.

  15. Has anyone seen this yet? I just saw it and it is Blockbuster material. Before its release I thought it would do 150 at most but now after watching it I think it can even cross 200 (maybe even more because Rohit Shetty movies always trend well). I can see it coming close to Kick as well. Box office wise the extraordinary opening of Singham leaves us pretty confused, but enough about the BO.

Compared to the first movie, this one was more “serious” (at least for a Rohit Shetty movie), there were less light moments. Although Rohit Shetty did say that this would be more serious in an interview almost a year ago. I remember there was a significant part in the 1st movie where it was about Singham-Kavya and that is missing here, we are just told the Singham-Kareena (already forgot her name in the movie because it was such an insignificant role) are in love. The story is basically what was shown in the trailer however there were a good amount of twists that kept the movie interesting. There were a lot of “WOL” (Whistle out loud) moments in the movie as expected and these weren’t meaningless such as in a Sallu movie where he might say stuff like “ek baar jo mein commitment blah blah”, or throw a bicycle in front of a train, these were more real dialogues and actions. Apparently police officers loved Singham 1 and based on that they will love Singham 2 even more.

The action was the usual Rohit Shetty except this time he added machine guns, the budget is definitely higher on this one. Although the action was definitely less over the top than Singham 1, you don’t see something as wild as Singham pulling a guy out of a car flying in midair. The songs are absolute garbage with the worst being the Honey Singh one. Acting wise Ajay Devgn was once again brilliant as Singham, the villain(s) were good however they did not leave as much of an impact as Prakash Raj did. Kareena had a 20 minute role and she was good in only 8 of those minutes. The length of the movie was good, I think it was just over 2 hours including songs. Cinematography/background sound/costumes etc were the Rohit Shetty usual.

One complaint though- the “message” (Yes, a Rohit Shetty movie has a message) of the movie I would say is kind of dangerous. I know that if people see Ajay Devgn/Singham doing something applaud worthy and realistic in Singham that they won’t actually go out and do it in real life, but still. This message is clear in the climax and I’ll avoid spoiling it. It’s what one would call “morally” wrong. Satyam said he was worried about some kind of politics being in the movie and being born and brought up in the US and pretty ignorant about Indian politics until recently, I have no idea what that is or if that was in the movie or not. Overall 4/5 and I’m not sure if I like Singham 1 or 2 better- they might’ve been basically the same move but they were different as well.

    • Raj I watched it and though it’s much better than the recent absurd stuff thrown at us but Singham 1 had much more impact and even. Jayank Shikre was sorely missed and confrontations were much more genuine and powerful there. Devgn acted very well and after a long time I liked the hero of a movie. He held the movie and audience will lap this straightforward, true to type act.

In terms of box office this is reaping the bonanza for hard work of earlier Singham. We saw that happening to Salman when Dabangg was the bonus for Wanted.

A good movie but Rohit could have done better with a shorter version and movie did drag in the middle with too many issues being tackled at once.

HNY and Bang Bang trailer on screen looked a bit better but both have weak heroes.

Without lot of factors it wouldn’t touch 30. If it was a sequel and still regular friday, I don’t see it touching even Kick’s 25crore. If it was not a sequel and not a holiday then 20 crores would have been the total.

Both CE(Eid) and ETT (aug 15) released on holidays and thats why went over 30+cr. Both were not sequels either and not south remakes. Dhoom3 had the best opening of all time and rightly so as it collected 32+ on a regular friday but it had advantage of being a sequel of super successful franchise.

So, as I put it out, lot of factors out there. But either ways, good for Ajay and he’ll follow it up with more south remakes now and become another Salman khan for the single screens.

Lucifer we got a peek into Rohit Shetty psyche / personality during the comedy circus days where he seemed consistent and principled while judging the contestant and was harsh to cheap, dirty, sluttish jokes esp on Krishna and few other popular ones. So if he maintains an upper hand in this alliance then there is some hope, otherwise he would easily turn into an Anubhav Sinha.

Coming to Singham Returns – obviously the movie is riding on Rohit Shetty’s name, but here this movie is all Devgn. Script and the tracks are weak and subject matter is monotonous and a weak / hammy hero would have made this movie farcical. But Devgn held the movie with his earnest act. Simply put he is a damn good actor and wish he was a looker to connect on regular basis with multiplex crowd. Action is not just leaps, jumps, and cable work but body language/eyes and he effectively uses his brooding nature.

    1) Brand
    2) Holiday
    3) Superstar

For example if Dhoom3 had Akshay or Ajay it would have only collected 10% less.
However if 1) and 2) are missing then 3) becomes more important for example f Himmatwaka had Salman it would have collected 80 crores.
This will lead to a flood of sequels a la hollywood:
    Get ready for:
    1) Chenna Express 2
    2) YJHD 2
    3) ZNMD 2
    4) RR 2
    5) Kick 2
    6) Ghajani 2

My predictions for rest of year
    1) PK 350 crores
    2) Bang Bang 290 crores
    3) HNY 230 crores

      Golmaal(RS Hit), Omkara(Flop), Cash(Flop), RGV ki Aag(Flop), Halla Bol(Flop), Sunday (RS Flop), U Me aur Hum(Flop), Golmaal Returns(RS Hit), All the best(RS Hit), London Dreams(Flop), Athithi(Average), Rajneeti( Hit but has Ranbir), OUTIM(Hit), Aakrosh(Flop), Golmaal 3(Hit), Toonpur ka superhero(Flop), Dil to bachcha hai ji(Flop), Singham(Hit), Rascals(Flop), Tezz(Flop), Bol Bachchan(Hit), SOS(Hit), Satyagraha(Flop), Singham Returns(Hit).

Out of 24 films from Golmaal onwards 2006 till 2014, AD has 10 hits and in those 10, 7 are RS films and other 3 are OUTIM, SOS and Rajneeti(shouldn’t be really Ajay’s film). So, just 2 real hits outside of RS in past 15 years? Where does that put Ajay?

This guy is seriously creepy on screen (I mean it as a complement) and as I was revisiting Anjaathe today I kept thinking how he would have been a far better fit (simply because he has a stronger presence) than Prasanna in the villain’s role (I doubt if I have seen a more disgusting villain in Indian cinema than the one in Anjaathe. 31. Singham Returns Holds Strongly On Saturday
    Saturday 16 August 2014 22.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Singham Returns held on strongly on its second day as collections look set to be around the 19 crore nett mark. There is a semi holiday in Gujarat so collections could even go to 20 crore nett. A 35% drop after a big holiday means its a very good trend.

The film is doing phenomenal business in Mumbai and CP Berar and these two circuits are best on Saturday. CP Berar was sold for a huge price of over 6 crore which looked high but seems like the film will cover easily.

The weekend is sure to go over 70 crore nett and may even touch 75 crore nett if Sunday shows a big jump. North India has also done very well with the business of the first Singham to be crossed in Delhi/UP and East Punjab in four days. South India is comparatively weaker but still numbers are good for mass film like Singham Returns

    Box Office India Trade Network

Singham Returns had an excellent weekend of around 74 crore nett approx making it the second highest weekend weekend of 2014 and the fourth highest weekend of all time after Dhoom 3, Chennai Express and Kick.

The film did phenomenal business in Mumbai circuit with a figure of close to 30 crore nett over the weekend. The difference between the first Singham and this Singham is the rest of the country where Singham Returns has fared much better. Singham released in 2011 had a ratio of 52% business outside Mumbai circuit while Singham returns has over 60%. Rajasthan CP Berar, CI, UP and Bihar are also fantastic.

There is a holiday on Monday and although its not an all India holiday, the major grossing areas for hindi films will have a holiday. North, Rajasthan and Gujarat will be off for Janmashtami while Maharashtra will have a holiday for Parsi New Year. This should give a healthy boost to collections.

        • If this has the trending of the first Singham (which was stable even with the ZMND competition at points) it should easily do 200. Actually with such a big week (assuming this holds up) it could get there with even less than the trending of that film. More realistically though I’d be surprised at more than the 160-180 range (I’d certainly be pleased if it reached that higher benchmark) because few films today trend that well and sequels usually don’t do as well either (on this score).

  34. Entertainment Grosses 58 Crore In Ten Days
    Monday 18 August 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Entertainment had a decent second weekend grossing around 8.25 crore nett which is a 73% drop from first weekend and that is a decent trend considering the competition was Singham Returns which had a fantastic weekend.

Entertainment has now grossed around 58 crore nett in ten days so despite a decent trend the business is still poor as it could not open well. It has done decent business in North and CI but that is not enough for a big film like Entertainment.

The film is likely to finish at around 65-57 crore nett for lifetime business which is better than some Akshay Kumar recent starrers like Boss and Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara but in the range of a Special 26 which was a smaller film.

  35. ‘The Expendables 3’ Fumbles Its Mission
    By BROOKS BARNESAUG. 17, 2014

LOS ANGELES — Did prerelease piracy kill “The Expendables 3,” or was the culprit old-fashioned franchise fatigue?

Lionsgate and Millennium Films had no easy answer on Sunday morning as they tabulated weekend ticket sales for that ensemble action movie, which appeared to take in just $16.2 million at North American theaters, almost 50 percent less than “The Expendables 2” in 2012.

A nearly complete version of “The Expendables 3” was stolen in late July, most likely from an independent special-effects finishing firm, and leaked online. Despite legal efforts by Lionsgate to stop its spread, it was downloaded about five million times before its release on Friday, according to piracy-tracking services.

But most of the illicit viewing happened overseas. Experts estimated that the movie, which cost at least $90 million to make and another $30 million to market, was downloaded 500,000 times in the United States and Canada. If each download equaled a lost opening-weekend ticket purchase, the leak would have cost Lionsgate roughly $4 million. (The average ticket price in North America is $8.15.)

In other words, the poor performance of “The Expendables 3” cannot be explained by piracy alone. That left box office analysts pointing to audience boredom with the series, which features action stars of a certain age: Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Lionsgate and Millennium had also tried to broaden the audience for “The Expendables 3” by releasing the film with a PG-13 rating; the two previous “Expendables” movies, which took in a combined $580 million worldwide, were rated R. There was a lot of PG-13 competition in theaters over the weekend. Core fans could also have worried that the third movie was watered down and decided to stay home.

Richie Fay, Lionsgate’s president for domestic distribution, said the PG-13 rating could help “The Expendables 3” find an audience in the weeks ahead. “I’m really hoping for holdover grosses,” he said. He declined to comment about the potential impact of piracy, citing the studio’s lawsuit.

The weak results make a fourth “Expendables” movie unlikely, but Millennium plans to continue with a female-focused spinoff, “The Expendabelles.”

The top-selling movie at theaters in the United States and Canada over the weekend was “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (Paramount Pictures), which took in an estimated $28.4 million, for a two-week domestic total of $117.6 million, according to Rentrak, which compiles box office data.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” (Disney) was second, posting ticket sales of $24.7 million, for a three-week total of $222.3 million. A new R-rated buddy comedy, “Let’s Be Cops” (20th Century Fox), was third, taking in about $17.7 million, for a total since opening on Wednesday of $26.1 million. Fox spent a modest $17 million to make “Let’s Be Cops,” which received sharply negative reviews.

Fox said the comedy “overperformed” in Midwestern states. Across the country, the turnout was heavily African-American and Hispanic, the studio said.

“The Expendables 3” was fourth. “The Giver” rounded out the Top 5, selling a soft $12.8 million in tickets. The Weinstein Company and Walden Media spent roughly $30 million to make “The Giver,” adapted from Lois Lowry’s 1993 novel for young readers. It also received poor reviews.

Also notable was “The Hundred-Foot Journey” (Disney), which played strongly in its second weekend, taking in about $7.1 million. And after a disappointing start in the United States in June, DreamWorks Animation’s “How to Train Your Dragon 2” has picked up steam overseas, where it opened in China over the weekend and has grossed an estimated $536 million worldwide.

A new brood of young actors are making the mistake of replacing consistency with cockiness. They’re in their 20s, carefully groomed, extensively publicised to ensure a growing fan base, and are frequently guided by mentors. The trouble is that none of them can act for nuts. Believe me that’s not a careless generalisation. I’ve been monitoring their films and performances (or the lack thereof) and do wonder if that precious art of acting has been replaced by, well, doing their number somehow before the camera. I speak of Arjun Kapoor, Siddharth Malhotra, Ranveer Singh, all of who are 29 years old, and Varun Dhawan who’s 27. Now do I hear their admirers protesting? Singham Returns has done very well on Monday with collections set to be around 13 crore nett. It is a holiday in some parts of the country but not the type where all offices are shut. The holiday has helped but still these sort of collections are very good.

This will take the film to around 87-88 crore nett and the film has chances of grossing around 110 crore nett in the first week depending on trend over the next two days. The business in Delhi/UP, East Punjab, West Bengal and Mysore has already crossed the first Singham.

Mumbai circuit is still leading the way and business on Monday will be around 5 crore nett taking the circuit to a huge 35 crore nett in four days. That is just a crore or two less than Jai Ho’s lifetme business in Mumbai.

Airlift: Akshay Kumar’s next a thriller of the biggest human evacuation

Facts of History: August 2, 1990, Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait
Saddam Hussein’s Iraq in 1990 was in debt to the tune of US $80 billion because of the long-drawn Iran conflict that it had undertaken. Iraq wanted the OPEC (Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and specifically Kuwait, to reduce oil production to create a scarcity of oil leading to increasing oil prices, thereby helping Iraq raise more money. But, both the OPEC and Kuwait refused, leaving Iraq furious. On August 2, 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. The Iraqi army took over the city within a few hours. The Kuwaiti royal family managed to escape to Saudi Arabia, leaving the state rudderless. The city was looted and the general population subjugated and made to suffer great tragedies at the hands of the Iraqi army. Kuwait was home to almost 1,70,000 Indians, all of who had suddenly lost all their money, were homeless and scared for their lives. Some of the Indian businessmen got together to form a group that would oversee the evacuation of the huge Indian contingent from war-torn Kuwait. The evacuation was no easy task, as most Indians were not ready to leave everything they had worked for so hard, for so many years. Neither could they, as they did not have valid travel papers as the employers used to hold on to their employee passports once they landed in Kuwait, and those Kuwaiti employers were either dead or had fled by then.
The India Political scenario in 1990: Politically, India was at its most unstable with VP Singh as its Prime Minister, with the opposition threatening to bring the government down. Not only was India financially in trouble, but also 40% of its crude oil came from that region that was now stuck because of the war.
The Film: It is in this scenario that Ranjit Katyal (played by Akshay Kumar), a wealthy and powerful Indian businessman, who has always seen himself as a Kuwaiti, rather than an Indian, realises that he no longer wields any influence on the Iraqis, and that he and his family are in as much danger as anyone else. Ranjit unknowingly becomes the man who all 1,70,000 Indians look up to for getting them out safely from Kuwait. Airlift is the story of Indians stranded in Kuwait during this traumatic time. A story of how they, with the help of Ranjit Katyal, managed to survive the Iraqi invasion, and against all odds travelled a thousand kilometres across the border into Amman, Jordan. From Amman, 1,70,000 Indians were brought home by the largest and the most successful evacuation ever attempted by any country, in the history of the world. Over 59 days, the Indian government systematically flew over 488 Air India commercial flights into a war zone to evacuate all 1,70,000 Indians and safely bring them back home. Airlift is an uplifting and entertaining edge-of-the-seat thriller and is the story of the biggest ever human evacuation in the history of mankind.

Airlift, directed by Raja Krishna Menon, starts filming April 2015 and is presented by T-Series and Cape of Good Films; produced by Crouching Tiger and Emmay Entertainment. Bhushan Kumar, talking about the film, said, “It’s my conviction that the story will be equally appreciated once on celluloid as much as I loved it during narration. The character that Akshay plays is filled with heroism and I am sure he will add to the perfection with this central character role that he essays.”

  39. Abhishek Bachchan in film on kabaddi?
    By Indo-Asian News Service @indiacom | August 19, 2014 2:52 PM

Mumbai, Aug 19: Actor Abhishek Bachchan, who owns Jaipur Pink Panthers, a franchise of the Pro Kabaddi League, may do a full-fledged movie on the sport. It may be too early to talk about the movie, but sources close to the project say it would be as inspirational a film about the game of kabaddi as “Chak De! India” was for hockey.

“Abhishek wants to make sure it’s the perfect kabaddi film. He’s on the lookout for the script,” said a source. For now, making kabaddi into a cool game is Abhishek’s game-plan. Though he is committed to join his good friend Shah Rukh Khan on their global tour to promote their film “Happy New Year” September onwards, Abhishek is making the best of the time before the concert tours to promote his kabaddi team at matches all over India.

Abhishek makes sure he is physically present to cheer and motivate his kabaddi team, the Jaipur Pink Panthers. ”There is little point in associating with a team, no matter which game, unless you’re physically present to motivate them,” said Abhishek.

Singham Returns did well on Monday as it collected around 13 crore nett. It was a semi holiday at places and the film held up better in those places. The film did have a noticeable drop in places like West Bengal and Mysore. Below are the daily approx figures for the first four days in week one.

      Friday – 30,50,00,000
      Saturday – 20,00,00,000
      Sunday – 24,00,00,000
      Monday – 13,00,00,000

      TOTAL – 87,50,00,000

Singham returns has grossed around 87.50 crore nett in four days and should go close to the 110 crore nett mark for the first week making it the eight film to go over 100 crore nett in one week..

      • This is where movies like Singham Returns and Ek Villain are losing the battle. If these were festival release they definitely had potential to post much bigger numbers by close of business.

        Like

      • Not sure how true is this, but saw a Devgn interview where he says that Singham Returns’ first day collections are highest considering it didn’t have a dubbed Telugu and Tamil unlike the other biggies like Kick and Jai Ho.

BTW I saw the film. It is just about alright (I didn’t even care about the 1st part, but that one was significantly better not the least because it had Prakash Raj. The only bright spot in the sequel is a decent action-sequence on the Worli Sea-link). Perhaps I am going a little crazy, but I preferred Kick to this. And what was truly despicable was that Shetty has stretched that ‘police as that extra-constitutional force’ plot-strand to moronic levels. What happens in the pre-climax isn’t just offensive, but almost farcical (sadly in the single screening in which I saw the film, people were cheering most during the pre-climax itself). I must say that people are really liking this one- it shouldn’t trend worse than the 1st one

I just don’t understand this, why can’t Devgn associate himself with something better. I can understand why Salman keeps producing crap, that’s what his game is all about. But Devgn’s game, throughout the major part of the last decade (perhaps since Zakhm and certainly TLOBS) was being considered a ‘serious actor’ (I am talking about the public perception here, and I was certainly a part of ‘that’ section of public). I don’t mind if Singham would be one of his projects and if he would choose to mix it up with something like OUATIM (and is OUATIM asking for too much. And to think of it, not so long ago he was doing a Rituparno Ghosh, something truly dark like Aakrosh, Santhoshi’s films, some good Jha ones etc…now to be fair, he would he would still do a Jha film- he had Satyagraha last year- provided he has a good enough role though Jha has deteriorated like anything; think he will do a Santoshi project at the drop of a hat, but even otherwise he can do better commercial films. I am not even asking him to take up a film like Aakrosh leave aside something like Raincoat, all I want from him is to do a sensible commercial film whether it is Masala or something else. He was ‘loved’ in OUATIM, the brooding roles suit him, not sure why can’t he do something on the same lined), but these days when he is not Singham he is either doing a Himmatwala or a Bol Bachchan! His next is the Prabhudeva film (though perhaps it will be a more enjoyable film than Singham Returns). Perhaps in a way Singham was the worst thing which happened to him- out of nowhere he got his career’s first true solo superhit, to top it all both his character and the film was truly liked. This then lead to few more solid hits (Son of Sardaar, Bol Bachchan) and he suddenly started to believe that he is some hot-property at box-office (which he actually isn’t. Or atleast the ‘box-office’ doesn’t define him the way it defines Salman. Now Devgn has become a big commercial force of late, but I am not sure that w.r.t the box-office he can even aspire to be in the league of Ranbir leave aside Khans and Hrithik) and since then he has completely turned his back towards anything half-decent (in many of his recent interviews, he keeps indicating that he doesn’t care about about offbeat films and that the good films are the ones which work at BO. I remember him saying this idiotic stuff that it was his and Priyan’s fault that they made Aakrosh all dark and serious. Earlier when Devgn used to make few public appearances, he never used to say any of this bull. I mean he has all the right to do Himmatwala if he wants to, but dissing meaningful cinema, just because it doesn’t always work at box-office, is just plain wrong). As a fan, I just wish he does better stuff, or atleast more entertaining stuff.

        • Totally unrelated to Devgan, but everything you have said applies perfectly to Suriya too. Incidentally he also went this mass route after the original Singham. His latest Anjaan is so pathetic , one has to wonder what made an actor like him sign this trash. Its so sad as Suriya is a wonderful actor otherwise.

          Like

        • Krish: Not surprised with your assessment of Anjaan (I wanted to check this one out in the theatre as I had heard that they were playing it with subs at a few places in Delhi. But when folks told me that this was one of his worst films ever, I decided to stay away)- and think of it, he dropped out of the Gautham Menon (who has given him 2 of his finest films and roles- Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram film) project. I don’t even remember which was the last good Suriya film (though I didn’t mind Maatrraan)- perhaps Vaaranam Aayiram. He is doing Venkat Prabhu’s “Mass” next, which might have been good news at one point of time, but since his charming debut (Chennai 600028), Venkat Prabhu has plummeted to really subterranean levels (what the heck was Biryani. And Karthi, since his debut in the superb Paruthiveeran, has chosen to star in one wretched film after another, with the sole exception of Naan Mahaan Alla. Have you seen Alex Pandian…it was bad beyond belief). Vikram’s case is not much better either- though I am looking forward to Ai as well as the film with the Goli Soda. Madhavan seems to have completely wrecked his career. So Tamil stars are doing worse than Hindi ones on this score. I must admit I am looking forward to Menon’s film with Ajith (not the least because Shridhar Raghavan has co-scripted this).

And replying to your question from previous thread that while the first half of Drishyam did help in setting up the characters, I found that part problematic because the throughout the first half there is no sense of a hovering dread (or paranoia) in the film (up until midway when that incidence with Lal’s daughter occurs, the film seems to be like a family-comedy sort of deal. And suddenly when the thriller element is introduced, the tonal shift seems jarring. Even if Jeethu Joseph wanted to go ahead with an absolute thrill-less first half, he should have shortened it to half an hour or so. There was no need to stretch it to more than an hour. I am reminded of Bachchan’s Benaam which too was a family-thriller where for quite some time on the beginning, we have romance and Drishyam-like comedy between the couple, but the difference was that the mood of the film was such that we know from the beginning that something ‘wrong’ is about to happen any moment. BTW Jeethu Joseph himself handled this mood bit better in last year’s Prithviraj starrer thriller Memories which I quite liked. In any case the best Indian thriller in many years has been Prithvi’s Mumbai Film- what a film!).

On Nivin Pauly, I think I have seen only 2 films of his- 1983 where I quite liked him (thought that at his age, he handled that role, which required to him play a sort of matured guy, pretty well). I didn’t mind him in Neram either, but I thought the film was owned by Simha. And Nazriya Nazim is such a breath of fresh air- even in a nothing role in Neram, she is so charming and effortless. What a find this girl. I REALLY hope she keeps acting even after her marriage with Fahadh.

      • Satyam: BTW not sure if you are aware of this, but Atul Sabharwal, the director of Aurangzeb (which I though was a very interesting and intelligent take on Masala genre. This would been actually been a very good film had it starred a better lead. And since you mentioned Trishul’s representation of Delhi just the other day, I think Aurangzeb too had a very different representation of Delhi and NCR, of course the plot too shares more than a passing resemblance with Trishul with a bit of Don thrown in), has started a fine blog on cinema which deals with shots/frames from films. And there seems to be some real thought gone into the films whose frames he has chosen (one could, from his choices of films on his blog, get an idea as to why he made Aurangzeb as a film)- Agneepath, Bandini, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Mirch Masala. Would urge you to check it out- http://cineframesindia.wordpress.com/

The Lunchbox actress talks about her follow-up project and how it all started.

Good things really do come to those who wait.

In the case of The Lunchbox debutante Nimrat Kaur — who remained steadfast in her decision to not take up roles that weren’t up her ally for a good two years since her debut film’s release — that good thing has manifested itself in the form of a coveted part in an acclaimed American political thriller.

In another first, Nimrat makes her Hollywood debut as Tasneem Kureshi in the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe-winning television show Homeland, for which she is currently shooting with the show’s cast and crew in Cape Town.

Before she left for the show’s second schedule, the actress let us in on how it all began.

“I was in London when my agent fixed up the screen test for the role. I went for it and got the part. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” she said.

This is only her third acting project (if you take Vasan Bala’s yet to release Peddlers into account).

How different was her experience in working in an American production than in Indian projects?

“Working on Homeland has been very interesting — they shoot really fast, in the most meticulous manner, and are bang on time.

“There’s not really much difference between the ways we work in India and them, except, unlike in the movies, we only get scripts of episodes we’re shooting for; the environment is really high function.”

Ganga Jamuna Saraswati had many demented situations, none perhaps as demented as a the notion of a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Pankaj Udhas with music by Anu Malik. One of these set-pieces was the ice-bucket challenge thing once again. Meenakshi Sheshadri it is now who falls into the frozen lake (unrelated factoid: gossip magazines used to refer to her as the “Ice Maiden”) and Amitabh Bachchan is forced by circumstances of course, the exact same circumstances that had plagued Shashi Kapoor all these years, to cojoin with the freezing girl. What’s truly amazing is that Amitabh does the same set of actions that Shashi did, almost in the exact same order, including turning Sheshadri to the side and unclasping one button (the very same), and then making the same anguished expression of martyrdom. The result is also exactly the same. Meenakshi Shesadri gets with child, another series of complications ensue that leads to Amrish Puri getting his bald head chewed off by a crocodile.

  51. Bachchan Jr gets Chennai franchise
    Marcus Mergulhao | Aug 22, 2014, 03.08 AM IST

Mumbai: The lid over the ownership of the Chennai franchise in the Indian Super League has been lifted, although not officially.

IMG-Reliance have confirmed that Chennai will replace Bengaluru as the eighth franchise of the ISL, and although there was no official word on the owners, TOI understands that the franchise will be allotted to a consortium led by Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan.

“The eighth team in the ISL is Chennai. The owners will be announced at an appropriate time,” said Anupam Dutta, the newly-appointed CEO for ISL.

“The bid is being reviewed by our committee. You will hear from us soon,” was all that Dutta said when asked to reveal details of the ownership.

According to sources, Abhishek Bachchan was scheduled to attend the inter-national player draft in Mumbai on Thursday but instead opted to travel to Jaipur where Pink Panthers, the team that he owns in the Kabaddi Pro League, were in action.

The Chennai franchise was represented by Prashant Agarwal, CEO of Kshatriya Sports, and team at the draft. The group has collaboration with Inter Milan in India and is understood to have played a role in getting France World Cup winner David Trezeguet to sign on the dotted line for the Pune franchise as a marquee player.

Kshatriya Sports, part of Play on Sports, have been named as technical partners of the Chennai franchise.

The Chennai franchise came out on top in the sequence selection for the draft and picked up former Premier League defender Bernard Mendy as their first buy. Other players they bought include Bojan Djordjic, who at 18 was voted the best young player at Manchester United but made just two appearances for the senior team. Djordjic is now 32 and last played for Swedish club Vasalunds IF.

All 14 domestic players picked up by the Bengaluru franchise at the draft will be transferred to Chennai. The domestic players include Gouramangi Singh, Harmanjyot Khabra and Jeje Lalpekhlua.

This is remake of Tom Hardy’s ‘Warrior’. Should be kept the original title in Hindi as well instead of bland title ‘Brothers’.

      No…just….no.

The thing with these remakes for mediocre movies is that the actors in those films elevated a rather blase script. Hard to match entertaining performances by Anil Kapoor, Madhuri, Rakhee, Jackie, and of course Anupum Kher. And there was the awesome music. ‘My Name is Lakhan’ is an iconic song in Hindi Cinema. Why can’t we just enjoy the past instead of trying to re-create it?

      • I love the original movie a lot. That was actually ghai in very good form. Now I am quite fine with rohit shetty doing this movie as I think he has the right sensibilities for this kind of movie. But not sure why they are thinking about Siddharth and varun. This movie requires men as leads not boys. I wonder if it is Karan’s idea to push his protégés in this one.

  53. India Blocks Film on Indira Gandhi Assassination
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSAUG. 22, 2014, 2:41 A.M. E.D.T.

NEW DELHI — India has blocked the release of a film on the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying it glorifies her killers and could trigger violent protests.

India’s film certification board says the film glorified the two Sikh bodyguards who killed Gandhi to avenge her suppression of an insurgency that culminated in an army assault on Sikhism’s holiest shrine.

The film “Kaum De Heere,” or Diamonds of the Community, was scheduled to be released Friday.

Certification board chief Leela Samson says panel members saw the film and decided it could not be released as it poses a threat to public order.

Samson says India’s Home Ministry had expressed concern about a clearance earlier given to the film and had asked the panel to review it.
