A Ram Lakhan remake

  1. If Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic roles can be done by SRK and Hrithik it’s far less of a gap for Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan to do Ram Lakhan. ridiculous as this otherwise might be it stretches the imagination far less! In fact in an odd sense this film highlights the absurd truth of those earlier remake attempts!

        • you shouldn’t respond seriously to such comments.. Agneepath’s numbers by today’s standards would have been that of a blockbuster. But even leaving this aside the film did rather well in Bombay even at the time. Not as much outside. It was still one of the year’s big grossers. Of course it’s fair enough to say that expectations were really huge here and the film did not meet them. But that’s different from the kind of garbage that’s thrown out by some folks. In this sense though the film’s iconic appeal over time is not totally unexpected if you look into the numbers. It had enough support even then in key cross-sections but it was drowned out in the media narrative. Of course no one expected it to become more famous than most of Bachchan’s blockbusters but that’s another matter. And here Aaj Ka Arjun is a good example. A big hit at that point, the only film that ran successfully even at the height of the Rath Yatra riots. However who remembers the film today? Agneepath matters not AKA. And though Hum had a sensational initial (not as strong a follow-through) and has that iconic song and so on even this film cannot match Agneepath’s lasting appeal. Not that I’ve ever been a huge fan of the latter. I admire it for many reasons more than I like it. Not much of a Hum fan either (too much here seems recycled from earlier Bachchan moments). Fundamentally Mukul Anand was always rather weak when it came to picking scripts. A whiz otherwise. Khuda Gawah especially was a massive wasted opportunity. The opening 40 min or so were so well done and then it all went dramatically downhill.

Before commenting like this, one must look into the facts first. Can you provide a link of any authentic source in support of your claim. If not, then i suggest you to check Film information journal/ trade guide or BOI in this regard. You must accept that the old Agneepath was out rightly rejected by the public and was declared a disaster and that is all.

Yakuza, for the sake of arguement, lets presume that 3.5 cr people have watched agneepath at that time and lets presume that average ticket price at that time was Rs.!5. at that time( i am taking lower side rates).. So keeping this into consideration, the film should have collected 52.50 cr easily and should have been declared a huge hit..So, please refrain from spreading lies to make Bachchan super hero.

Millions lined up to buy Sony’s Walkman then, but today no one wants to touch even the early iPod.

One cannot just factor in the increase in population while holding taste/preference & competition unchanged. With the change in the size of the population, many other changes also occur. It is possible that 3.5 Cr then could be just 100k (lesser number) today.

Just imagine Yudh (the new TV series) back in the 70s . It would have bought the nation to a standstill. No one denies that Yudh is good (and Amitabh is amazing in it), but the reality is that in the current environment it is desperately struggling to find an audience. Year ago this same thing could have milked it, but it is not even a contender.

This generation wants its own voice, it’s own icons. It wants Rohit Shetty not Subash Ghai or Mukul Anand.

Bachchan’s movie are being re-made because those were very interesting subjects with huge potential at ticket window. Since Bachchan being habitual of interfering with the scripts according to his taste, ruined those films..The best example one can have in this case is Agneepath..Even Kjo hinted that in an interview by saying that he’s still in shock to see box office results of Agneepath, so doing its remake.Producers will definitely approach Hrithik in future as well for a remake of an unsuccessful Bachchan film just to make it a blockbuster..So, not a bad deal for Hrithik either way..

Madhuri though has a superb dance here which Ghai (at his best in those days) beautifully lit up with the right cues and so forth (people forget just how good Ghai could be with his music videos). Ghai is still enjoyable but not in the 70s way. Henry is absolutely right that he is infinitely preferable to any masala maker today but he still hasn’t quite aged very well.

        • One of the charms of Ram Lakhan was the believability of Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff as brothers. They starred in many films together and that chemistry worked well. They felt like brothers in the 80’s/90’s. I doubt that can be recreated.
In any case, this is dumb idea from the outset. Johar is lost for ideas and these sound like easy productions to milk the cash cow as quickly as possible than any genuine love for the film. Any genuine lover of something would let that something be the way it was – not change it, modify it or even try to improve. Just let it be.
OR at least remake something that struggled or was not a success. That would show real ability to improve that kind of script or film.

Let them enjoy in the world of ignorance. The whole film world is not about Bachchan only. His films can be remade and what is the harm in that? You people are taking such acts personal and start venomous tirades against that star who plays Bachchan’s role.

      Like

      • Nobody is being ‘venomous’. As for our tirades against stars, one, they are not and secondly, I would be flattered if my viewpoints were so influential that they would alter ‘facts’ and box office standings of stars!

Your arguments give you away. You are working with a top-down approach: of discrediting someone with a stupendous record in box-office with ridiculous, laughable theories like interfering in scripts, working in multi-starrers etc etc..You don’t even bother to read what is provided. Suddenly Professors from IIT and IIM and their PhD students can be bought because apparently Amitabh or his fans AND the IIT professors and students have no other important work but to spend hard earned money on propagating probability theories!! You or anyone hating Bachchan didn’t even try to find out what were the plot-points about or what was ‘n’ or what was the formula they used. That article is NOT clear and doesn’t have all the ASSUMPTIONS or hypotheses laid out in detail. It only provides a high-level summary of the study and its findings. But hey, all the knee-jerk reactions you could provide was ABHISHEK’s graph being higher than ROSHAN’s! You see, you just LOOKED where you wanted to LOOK. Remember Lage Raho Munnabhai?

When you ask for proof, people provide you with proof and then, you find conspiracy there too!! So what actually are you looking for? Unfortunately, no one here can time-travel back to the ’70s or ’80s or ’90s and take you with them so that you could see with your own wonderful eyes the Amitabh phenomenon; of what he achieved WITHOUT the help of press during his peak years [with the press even blacking out his name when they were reviewing his films!].

So we can go on repeating history lessons here. But we have to move on. You can continue to throw out your wild theories and give Zaid Hamid of Pakistan a serious competition..

  5. If these remakes were about ‘reinterpreting a classic’ for example in the way that Jane Austen novels are revisited by film-makers ever so often, it would be less problematic. But all the recent remakes done in India seem purely for fame and money – the idea of making great (or even good) cinema doesn’t even ocurr to these people. Therefore there is no need to be original or creative.

Now they have discovered Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s cinema perhaps it is only time before Guru Dutt and Bimal Roy get found too…

    Like

    • yes absolutely.. there’s nothing wrong with remaking even the most iconic film as long as one at least tries to do something interesting with it. Obviously the bar is much higher in certain cases. Here RGV must be defended. There are those partisans who keep bringing up Aag simply to justify Don and so forth. Now on the one hand the film is an absolute disaster, no two ways about it. On the other hand RGV publicized the Sholay angle quite a bit but he never quite attempted a serious remake in this sense. In other words the film is very much part of his world with Bachchan in a villainous part and the Sholay framework tacked on to the whole thing. if the film didn’t have these references people wouldn’t even care even if they spotted the similarities. It would still have been a very poor film but the ‘remake’ attempt here such as it is is purely experimental. It is not like Don or Agneepath where you make a ‘big’ film, try to ‘refine’ the older film (new Don) or simply attempt a serviceable remake for contemporary tastes. With Don it was more or less Farhan Akhtar feeling that the older Don needed to be more hi-tech and SRK have a hubristic I’ll-be-Bachchanesque moment and the latter was about Johar trying to cash in on the masala wave pretending it was about family and Hrithik again not being able to resist the temptation (though as I’ve argued before unlike Don Agneepath is bad for the lead star’s ego inasmuch as it tries to keep him as much under the radar as possible, the larger-than-life elements are supplied by Dutt’s or Rishi’s characters).

When you attempt films that have been extremely iconic but also great reserves of ‘meaning’ for all sorts of reasons and have important stars or performances associated with them you can’t just remake them as you can say a regular thriller (iconic as it might also be) or even a classic (where you can always start from scratch even if there is a significant earlier version). You have to be a bit of a ‘thinker’ about the effort or ask yourself why at all the film ought to be remade or if it is how it might be differently reconfigured for the present. If it’s just done as you said for cynical reasons you might get a half-decent box office result (either don) or a big initial and not much after this (Agneepath) but either way you’ve made a pointless film.

But even in Don or Agneepath useless as the attempts might have been there was some narrative to the efforts. SRK’s ambition with the former, Johar’s own effort to get a success anyway anyhow out of a film which though it disappointed on its initial run had become more important than many of Bachchan’s hits over time (so one could pretend to make a success out of a failure all the while relying on as it were the film’s ‘posthumous’ success!) and doing something for his father in the bargain. But when you get to stuff like Ram Lakhan or whatever and even though the gap is far less here it’s also an even more cynical attempt. By this standard you could pick up anything at all and remake it. In Ek Villain Siddharth Malhotra starts beating up people on a Shahenshah cue (playing on video in the background). When you start putting up this sort of juxtaposition you’ve truly entered the realm of the farcical and this is what has defined ‘Bollywood’ for a long time anyway. Not ‘badness’ as much as ‘farce’.

Ranveer Singh would be good fit for Lakhan’s role but then casting his elder brother would be difficult. Out of the younger lot, Siddharth as Ram and Varun as Lakhan are well suited but then the project becomes cold and not anyone would bother to check it out and Karan Johar would want a ‘Hot’ project and huge money spinner, thats the whole point of taking on Rohit Shetty.

The film that was announced a year back has finally found the titular actors. Rohit Shetty and Karan Johar’s collaboration upon making a remake, of Subhash Ghai’s superhit film-Ram Lakhan, is en route to shaping up.

Finally, Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan have been cast as Ram and Lakhan in the new age film.
There were rumors afloat and now the actors are filling in the Ram-Lakhan shoes. The 1989 classic film has been a super hit and with the winning combo of Rohit and Karan working on its remake, industry experts are eying for a blockbuster in the making.
Out of the pool of names doing rounds, Dhawan and Malhotra have bagged the role and will be seen playing brothers for the first time. After Johar’s protégés debuted with Student of the Year, the two haven’t worked together, but successfully delivered films that raked moolah at the box-office.

The film will start rolling the next year. With such an impressive team, people are putting their bets on that Ram Lakhan remake might just outdo the original film!
