  1. Mardaani Has Low Opening Singhan Returns Leads
    Friday 22 August 2014 12.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Mardaani had a low opening all over with collections around 15-20% and is dependent on word of mouth which has to translate into a big jump in business in the evening and more importantly tomorrow.

Singham Returns is ahead of Mardaani all over apart from a few places despite being in its eighth day. Mardaani will have to show good jump in the evening to get close to the Singham Returns figures for day eight. Even if it gets close the weekend is likely to belong to Singham Returns unless the growth for Mardaani is phenomenal on Saturday and Sunday.

If we compare the first morning figures on Mardaani and eighth day morning of Singham Returns then it was West Bengal multiplexes where the films were similar. Singham Returns was way ahead in Mumbai and there was a good gap in Delhi/UP and East Punjab but Mardaani can get closer in North if it picks up.

  2. Singham Returns Has Excellent First Week
    Friday 22 August 2014 11.00 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Singham Returns had an excellent first week of around 110 crore nett but collections did start dropping on the weekdays outside Mumbai circuit and CP Berar to an extent. The business in Mumbai circuit in week one is almost the same as Kick though all India is 40 crore plus lower than Kick.

North India has fared much better than the first Singham though collections dropped from Tuesday onwards. Mysore and West Bengal have average business. Rajasthan, CI and Bihar were excellent in week one.

The film may just cross the 150 crore nett mark on the strength of business of Mumbai circuit. After four days it looked it good have gone higher but dropped outside Mumbai circuit. Still 150 crore nett will be a fantastic final total for Singham Returns.

    • had it followed the trending of the earlier installment it would have done 220. Sequels rarely do of course. Still it might have done at least 160 or so. Having said that even if it does 150 it will have added as much to its week as ETT did to its far greater 150 crore (or whatever) number!

And again barring Aamir with Ghajini no one has done better than this with action oriented drama or masala. The films that gross more than this are in every single case attractive to wider swathes of the audience. For a Tamil audience this sort of subject is completely ‘ordinary’. But for a Hindi multiplex one otherwise soaking in films like HNY and Bang Bang this is ‘heavy’ stuff!

  3. Entertainment Has Decent Second Week
    Friday 22 August 2014 10.30 IST
    Box Office India Trade Network

Entertainment did reasonably well in its second week as it grossed around 12 crore nett. The collections are not very high but considering the screen count and the huge business of Singham Returns its a decent figure.

The film has now grossed around 62 crore nett and will finish at around the 65 crore nett plus. The film is losing but it has been appreciated at some mass centres. The fate of the film shows how important an initial is especially if the release window is just one week.

Though the opening did not materialise it still could have have put up a decent lifetime figure if Singham Returns did not come as it would have had double the screens in week two.

  5. Akshay Kumar is the real king of box office every year

The Khans might brawl at the B-O over highest first day collections, but Akshay Kumar gets the highest collections every year, because he has at least three releases every year

A film’s first day collections have become something of a big deal, of late. Like something of a benchmark, really. Earlier, the talk would revolve around the weekend collections or total collections of a film, but these days, the With Singham Returns, Rohit Shetty has given Ajay Devgn his highest first-day figures. Weekend numbers are therefore crucial in deciding if a film will make it to the coveted 100 crore club

Actors and filmmakers fluff up the figures of their films by few crores to make it to the highest opening category. While the competition is largely between the three Khans – Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan – one cannot ignore Akshay Kumar. While the Khans have one movie a year, their fans throng to the theatres in bulk to see them. But Akshay’s collections get divided because of his multiple releases. Getting the audiences to the theatres three times in a year is not an easy feat. Says producer Ramesh Taurani, “If an actor has four releases, it may make a bit of difference on the collections of the first day, but if you look at the yearly total, it does prove profitable for the producers. Though I did expect Entertainment to do more business, I am extremely happy with the way it has been received at the box office.”

    Trade speak
Vikas Mohan, editor of the trade magazine Super Cinema adds, “Akshay does a minimum of three movies a year at an average. By that account he is the actor whose movies people watch the most in a year. Be it his professionalism or simply his passion to do movies, and above all his time management factor that sets him apart from his contemporaries. Obviously, the actors have a certain novelty factor working for them hence audiences go to watch their movies in big numbers cause they see them in one movie a year. Akshay opens at an average in the range of 10-15 crores while the rest of the actors are at an average of 25-30 crore average. So by that account itself, Akshay does decently when compared to the others. This is also the reason he is able to charge the high fees which makers pay him happily because they know, at the end of the day even his bad movie ends up with some sort of a profit. Aamir Khan has been the most profitable to the makers and the distributors in recent years given those movies’ high return on investment.”

    The current trend
Earlier, all actors used to work on several movies a year. Aamir bucked the trend by concentrating on one movie per year. And soon a his peers followed his lead. And today not just the established stars, but even the newcomers prefer to concentrate on one movie at a time. It is the Hollywood model. When it comes to established stars, many of them also part-produce their movies hence they want to be involved in the post production of their project before starting a new project.

    Wait for the holiday!
Releasing a movie on a holiday weekend is a huge bonus. With the smashing figures of Singham Returns, the fight for holiday weekend is going to get uglier. Salman Khan’s Kick released on Friday but it saw a huge jump again on Tuesday, on Eid day. If there’s a public holiday on the release day then the movie enjoys an uninterrupted weekend for three days instead of two before it has to face the Monday slump.

    It’s about the look, too
Today, most actors opt for looks that are specific for that particular movie, it then becomes impossible for them to act in two projects at the same time. Filmmakers even want their actors to retain the look for the film’s promotions, making it difficult for an actor to shoot multiple films together. Actors are also made to sign contracts which make it mandatory for them to keep aside at least 40 days aside to promote a film for city tours and film promotion.

    Why the first day matters
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “The first day collections have become extremely important because it is a direct reflection of a star’s power. Your standing at the box office is decided by the number that you make on the first day as it shows how much crowd can you pull in at this early stage. In the 70s and 80s, either the star would claim to be a king, emperor, prince or queen, or the media would give them these titles, but now that’s changed. You title depends on the numbers at the box office. As for the Rs 100 crore club, considering the amount of the screens and the ticket rates Rs 200 crore will soon be the new Rs 100 crore. It has become important that your movie makes that much money because it has become a benchmark. But a movie doesn’t become hit only by making that much money. If a movie made at Rs 120 crores makes Rs 110 crore it’s a flop. It’s all about the pricing. Rs 100 crores is big deal for a movie like Ek Villain, which has been made at a considerable lesser cost. Also, a movie like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, which made 75 crores is a super hit just like a 100-crore making 2 States, because of its pricing.”

    Movie stats
    2012
    Aamir: Talaash: Rs 14.52 cr
Salman: Ek Tha Tiger: Rs 32.93 cr, Dabangg 2: Rs 21 cr

Akshay: 2012: Housefull 2: Rs 14 crore, Rowdy Rathore: Rs 15 cr, OMG! Oh My God: Rs 4 cr, Khiladi 786: Rs 9.42 cr (Total: 42)

Akshay: Special 26: Rs 7 cr, Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobara!: Rs Rs 11.25 cr, Boss: Rs. 18 cr (Total: 36.25)

    2014:
    Aamir: PK (Yet to release)
Salman: Jai Ho: Rs 17.75 cr; Kick: Rs 26.40 cr
SRK: Happy New Year (yet to release)
Akshay Kumar: Holiday: Rs 12.18 cr, Entertainment: Rs 11.16 cr, The Shaukeens (Yet to release)

The figures are approximate. However, they are adequately indicative of the box-office performance of the film.

    • Just wonder that these numbers represent. I think the analysis started well, but lost track towards the end.
I personally believe that Akshay’s opening day figures will not be at the level of those stars who do 1 movie every 12 months. I appreciate him doing multiple films and getting highest revenue in a year or in last few years. Like i mentioned, he is the Sachin Tendulkar of Bollywood…By the time Akshay shall end his career, he would leave a total revenue figure, hard to beat.
      Profitable NO; Market capture YES.

      • Tendulkar is NOT just the top run scorer. He amassed loads of other records and helped win matches.
Akshay Kumar is like Colin Montgomerie. He turned up in the 90’s to top the golfing earnings and seeds in most years in Europe. He probably did this by winning some tournaments, getting a lot of top 10 finishes etc.
But what usually separates the greats from the good ones is how many memorable moments they have or winning the big ones! Montgomerie never won a Major and never will. Akshay is like that. Or like those tennis players who end up in the ATP tour finals whose names are not Murray/Federer/Nadal/Djokovic! Or golfers who get loads of Top 10 finishes but are not winners of Majors.

When was the last time Akshay had the biggest opener ever. Singh is Kinng in 2008. He was doing 3-4 films back then too.

So what stops him now? This “dilution” argument is an excuse for bad films and bad choices. Just like the predictions of Entertainment were 150 crore+ and have come crashing down to 60 crore odd…there are no real excuses. He chooses poorly and does a lot of lazy films.

It’s not just about scoring the most revenue. A company could still be deemed a bad one even if making the most revenue. It’s about having a successful product at a good price for the consumer and return for shareholders. Most revenue does not EQUAL this.

It sounds like the only thing an Akshay fan can “latch on to” to elevate his star above others is “revenue”.

        • To each his own. Tendulkar never had real high moments in test the way Laras Pontings or even Dravida had. But what he had was ability to be prolific. Sachin may be bigger of the two and not the fit to the T in this analogy, butby and large he is known for his max runs in tests and ODIs. Same will be spoken of Akshay. If u have a problem with that, it’s urs.

        • yeah all the cricket experts of the world who put Sachin on the greatest 11 of all time in list after list (including one recently) must be nuts. Really these ‘debates’ reach insanity sometimes. If you think by the way that Sachin is just great for being prolific you either don’t know cricket or his game or both. There’s simply no other ‘debate’ to be had here. But again it might well be that you are right and every cricket expert from Bradman (who said a number of things about Sachin in the mid-90s or so) on to everyone else (cricketer or commentator) is wrong. Hey there’s always that mathematical possibility!

Now on Akshay I won’t get into the debate because one Alice in Wonderland argument is enough for one day.

And he of course missed the biggest chance of his career when he didn’t jump onto the masala bandwagon in time. I’ve always felt he could have been in Salman’s position but he somehow stayed away from the genre till it was too late. But yes even at his most successful he wasn’t the absolute top star or anything. Never did a Salman quite obviously but also never had the prestige commercial projects by and large.

  6. I happened to see the movie ‘The Xpose’ starring Himesh. I will recommend this movie to everyone who wants to laugh after a bad day. The movie is so bad it is actually very good. Himesh is cast as Rajnikanth and mouths gems such as “Naan Oru Dharuva Sonna, Noor Dharava Sonna Madhiri’. He plays a angry ex cop who later becomes a South superstar Hero and then makes an entry in Bollywood in the 1960’s. Every line of his is like a punchline – the kinds you will laugh till your belly bursts. And then there is Ananth Mahadevan the director himelf who plays a director in the movie and mouths lines such “Na Dance, Na expression, Na Pose, Sirf Xpose’ to a upcoming heroine when she approaches him and he does so very seriously without a hint of smirk…All in all this is a very entertaining movie for anyone who wants to have fun.

BTW Boss and Besharam are available on netflix now. I happened to watch Boss and even with my apparent dislike for Pokkiri raja – the source of this movie – I have to see Boss is quite entertaining and far superior to the original…Ronit Roy was in good form and Akshay was funny and entertaining in it. And I dont even like Akshay Kumar….

I must have seen this movie some 20 odd times and have a great liking for the characters of Kader Khan and Anupam Kher apart from Shekhar/Tiger of course but I know a lot of people who didnt like the characters of Kader Khan and Anupam Kher and found the second half patchy….
Also considering how Shetty made Bol Bacchan though inspired by Golmaal and then how he made Golmaal 3 which was inspired from Khatta Meetha, he is the kind of director who doesnt do a direct remake. He bring a lot of ‘Shetty’ in his movies…So I would expect this movie to be different from the original with only the basic inspiration derived from Hum.

    • actually this would be in line with SRK’s current thinking.. to basically launch a circus, get others on board and get to 200 crores or whatever the high mark is this way. It’s like he’s more or less given up on just doing it on his own. Clearly this isn’t a Salman or Aamir deal where they have to carry the whole film. When he does something else it’s smaller so that comparisons don’t arise in the first place! Man, Bollywood should stop making new films altogether and just remake old stuff! Quite funny to see so many fans dissing Bachchan when their favorite stars do Bachchan remakes at the drop of a hat!

If your news is true Kajol would be quite weird doing that sort of part.

“Quite funny to see so many fans dissing Bachchan when their favorite stars do Bachchan remakes”

They’re doing bachhan remakes of his past movies, when he did good films and was relevant. They’re not remaking his current movies.
Fans are dissing bachhan movies of past 20 years, not what he did in his haydays.

Everythign is being remade from golmal, to khubsoorat to khatta meetha, to angoor, to ram lakhan, etc…

        Like

        • CE was a big surprise, including for SRK! Don’t think he ever expected that sort of gross. No one else did either. But do you know how to test what I’m saying? Let’s see if he’s doing more films like CE or more like HNY! Raees or the one based on the Fan are smaller films. When it’s a big commercial film he has neither the Hirani kind of absolute prestige solo not the Salman kind of deal where it’s a nothing film and Salman gets it somewhere (and ‘carries’ the film). On the rest if you’re the fan of a war who did Mohabbatein, K3G you might not be in a position to bring up anything by Aamir, let alone stuff like KKHH or KHNH or OSO or whatever.

On D3 I thought you felt Abhishek wasn’t a star at all? You might want to decide before HNY releases! And if you’re just referring to Katrina well there one Deepika on her hottest spree in CE! Of course you might also have mentioned Ghajini or 3I or Fanaa. You might have mentioned that RDB does not have any known northern star, you might have offered all sorts of examples (including of course Lagaan or TZP). But this requires a degree of honesty to which you are allergic. But let’s leave this subject at Devdas with both Madhuri and Aishwarya in the film..!

Now on the Bachchan thing it’s sometimes not a bad thing to think before speaking. ‘Current’ films are not remade anywhere. They have to be at least a generation old! LOL! And Hum is exactly that much like Ram Lakhan and as was Agneepath. Of course you might expect a Khakee remake or something. Shows how sensible you are. As for anyone dissing Bachchan’s films of the last twenty years I can cite several commercial or critical successes or both. Let me know when you’re ready to make the voyage back to reality and I could enlighten you! Of course reality is a terrible place for folks like you.

Now on everything being remade, Bachchan’s remakes still started the trend, but be that as it may SRK clings to the Bachchan ones more often than not! That’s also the only remake Hrithik has done.

      • To give credit to SRK, he is not part of this current remake bandwagon. You see, DON was the first remake of an hindi film in Film industry(Devdas is not), It could have gone either ways. Once that movie became success, it set the trend and everyone started doing the remakes.Lot more were annoucned but never got made like Kurbani, Farz, Jugnu etc. I don’t see SRK doing any remakes now but doing a remake when no one was doing and when everyone is doing is not the same.

        Like

        • That’s not really accurate. Yash Chopra’s Vijay in the 80s was a remake of Trishul. Bimal Roy’s Devdas was actually a remake of his mentor’s (P C Barua) earlier classic version with Saigal where Bimal Roy was cinematographer. I haven’t seen the older film but according to one expert on this it’s supposed to be almost a frame by frame remake. Mother India is a remake of the director’s older Aurat. I’m sure I could find other examples if I gave it some thought. Don however became the most publicized one because SRK attempted a Bachchan film. Most classics barring very few die out after their era. With Bachchan you have a large filmography that is still very current and hence the possibility of remakes that get you the desired attention.

          Like

        • I know this would come, I wanted to add more info. Don is the first film where rights were brought and official remake was done. Devdas is a novel, anyone can remake it as many times as the source is not another movie. SLB’s version has some scenes from older Devdas as well but its not a remake per se.

Making own versions of films like Aurat, Trishul is more like using the same subject matter and redoing it different way. Even Hum Aapke hai kaun is sourced from Rajshri’s Nadiya ke paar(same storyline). No one calls its a remake.

Don is certainly the trend setter in recent history of buying rights from original producers and remaking older films. I don’t see any precedent for DON before that and every thing else is just following the movie’s trend i.e, buying movie rights and making movies. From Golmaal to Karz to Hero to Ram Lakhan.

This is what they do –
[1] Compare best films of their star with “not the best” of other stars. Like DCH would be mentioned with Housefull but not a Hera Pheri or Special 26 if against Akki; or HAHK or MPK or Wanted of Salman ; Swades or Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa or most recent Chennai Express.
[2] Use Bachchan and Amitabh interchangeably for Big B and Joker B. In fact such is the fanaticism that Housefull 3 might be the next best to happen to the franchisee. Yes..i revealed the plan. 😀
[3] Despise and ridicule Johar and Chopras…but consider Dhoom 3 better than RNBDJ. yes they have not said it directly…but they never do.
[4] Question all box office sources if it doesn’t suit but use it as and when needed. Infact they sweetly dumped they hard fought Trending theory. Not a word is not typed from them on that. Earlier their use to breathe trending word in event three on box office.
[5] This post may make me a hero now…but they will now try to make me a villain.
Read my post. Did i ever mention about any other actor while putting a post on Akshay? But the Karan Arjun of this blog can’t resist a tail bite. Okay Tendular analogy was not perfect…but then no analogies ever are. Analogies are done to drive a point and not to prove it.

This film has no songs to hamper the seriousness of the subject.

There were so many snide remarks that Rani cant pull this off. She proved her detractors wrong with a small film and with no other stars except herself.

The movie is in thriller format; there is hardly any scene longer than few seconds, time just flies in this movie. Very good performance by Rani (except couple of scenes), she handled and carried the whole film exceptionally well.

I had no hopes from the movie promos but this one is going to success for sure, not sure how big. I don’t see anyone not liking this movie at all. Very well made movie and will be well received all over.

  13. A heartless profession?
    Chidanand Rajghatta,TNN | Aug 24, 2014, 05.29 AM IST

It is the Holy Grail for almost every Indian parent: that their son and or daughter go to medical college, become doctors, and embark on a thriving career that brings laurels — and sure, some lolly. It’s no different with NRIPIO parents, in the US, UK, or elsewhere, which is why the nearly 100,000 Indian American physicians in the US includes some 20,000 who are either born or have grown up in America and graduated from US medical schools. Dr Sandeep Jauhar has been there, done that -and not liked it one bit. And he’s blown the whistle on his profession — or ripped it apart with a scalpel. Medicine, as practiced in the United States, is sick — very, very, sick.

In a devastating -and immensely selfcritical -book that is making waves in the US, the Indian-American physician, with specialization in cardiology, describes how the medical profession has become a pitiless, mercenery, medical profession, moneyripping vocation where doctors treat patients as revenue generators rather than human beings, keep patients in hospital longer than necessary to bill them more, order needless tests to generate profits, and cozy up with drug reps helping predatory pharmaceutical companies sell dangerous drugs. American doctors — and that includes Indian-Americans like himself -are suffering from a “collective malaise” of discontent, insecurity , and immoderation.

None of this is a great secret; discerning patients, activists, and even many physicians themselves have recognized this for a long time in the US. But its Dr Jauhar’s astonishing candor in `Doctored: The Disillusionment of an American Physician’ that has shocked the medical fraternity and layman alike, shattering the image of the doctor as a do-gooder -and for Indians, that of the NRI physician as the epitome of nobility . No one comes out looking good in this tortured, self-lacerating book: not Jauhar himself, nor his brother (also a cardiologist), nor physician friends and mentors, and not the American system. This is the Ferguson moment in medicine — ugly but true.

Asked in an interview on Thursday if he intended to stay on in the medical profession at all, given the shock and horror his book is creating (the NYT reviewer said this is the first book that’s prompted her to write “Yuck!” in the margin), Dr Jauhar said he owed it to his readers to give them the unvarnished, unfiltered truth, without being irresponsible.”Probably the person who comes in most for criticism is myself. When you are willing to be self-critical, people will appreciate it,” he told me gravely , after initial jokes about his taking potshots at his own family , including his father, subsided. “I am disillusioned with how medicine is practiced in this country but not disillusioned with being a physician.”

Jauhar’s sulfurous chronicle of the medical profession in the US begins almost as soon after he graduates from fellowship and takes a salaried job at a hospital (after 19 years of college education, including a Ph D in physics). The hours are brutal, the money is meager, and before long he becomes part of the venal system, treading dodgy ethical terrain to keep his body , soul, and family together. He moonlights on other jobs and shills for pharma companies as he observes compromises, cronyism, and corruption flow like crud through the system. Doctors, hospital administrators, the health insurance sector, and pharma industry collude and conspire in sundry ways to rip-off patients -some who want to live forever despite being at their careless best.

The dysfunction is not entirely due to doctors. Jauhar describes how external sources -the government, the insurance industry , and pharma companies -have all played a role.Doctors, particularly primary care physicians and internists, who previously spent 20-30 minutes with each patient, now hurry out after 10 minutes because they now have to see twice the number of patients to generate the same revenue. As a result, patients do not get the attention they deserve and are not diagnosed properly . Meanwhile, some specialist doctors get to bilk the system (which is why everyone wants to specialize and there are fewer primary care doctors in the US), prescribing a multitude of tests and treatment -some to cover for malpractice liability, others to generate more revenue. Patients who came in complaining of even routine breathlessness are hustled into taking nuclear stress tests and bumped into cardiac procedures. That’s because insurance companies don’t pay doctors to spend time with patients trying to understand their problem. But they pay for CT scans and stress tests whether they’re needed or not.

Elsewhere, hospital administrators are also constantly putting pressure on doctors to keep occupancy rates high enough to generate profits (somewhat like hotels). Jauhar cites the economist Julian Le Grand’s idea of humans as knights, knaves, or pawns, to describe how the American system promotes knavery over knighthood. The chapter headings in his book says it all, going from “Learning Curve” and “Good Intentions” to “Denial” and “Deception,” before he takes a “Diversion” and becomes “A Country Husband” — leaving New York City for suburbia and greater attention to his family and children, instead of running on the treadmill of practicing soulless medicine. It is an unfinished story , in part because Jauhar is still on the margins of the system, even though he is “an outlier” as a fellow Indian-American physician, gastro-enter ologist L Chandrashekhar describes him.

The book, he says, should serve as a warn ing to India, where some physicians are already on the hook put out by American companies, with paid trips to Las Vegas and Disneyland (under the cover of invitation to conferences) for hawking expensive and often unnecessary surgeries and treatments — from stents to hip and knee replacements.

But most of all, once you read this tormented, self-lacerating book, it’s hard to see a doctor with the same respect. Doctors know it too. In a survey cited by Jauhar, 30 to 40% of US physicians today say they will not choose the same profession if they had a choice; and even more would not encourage their children to. The medical profession, it appears, is terminally ill, in the United States at least.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Mardaani grossed around 14.25 crore nett in its first weekend. The weekend was low but the trend was decent with decent growth on Saturday and a further up tick on Sunday. if the film can hold over the weekdays and do some decent business after the first week it can put up a decent lifetime figure.

The film was best in Mumbai, Delhi city, East Punjab, Kolkata and Bangalore while the rest did not really perform. The weekend was lower than Singham Returns which was in its second week and did not have a great second weekend.

Mardaani has managed a better opening weekend that other films like Queen and Dedh Ishqiya where the only star is the female lead.

Mumbai remains top as the weekend was around 6 crore nett in the circuit as the film heads for around 60 crore nett business in the circuit making it one of the biggest grossers ever in the circuit as only five films have gone over 60 crore nett.

The film has emerged a SUPER HIT and is the second biggest hit of the year after Kick and lifetime business is set to be in the 145 crore nett region.

India’s Pain Is One Woman’s Mission
‘Mardaani,’ a Policer About Child Trafficking in India
    By ANDY WEBSTERAUG. 24, 2014

Clearly, the Bollywood queen Rani Mukerji has had it with crimes against girls and women in India. In “No One Killed Jessica” (2011), based on a true-life miscarriage of justice, she played a television reporter hunting a man who killed a beautiful bartender. The son of a former government official, he is almost immune to prosecution.

In Pradeep Sarkar’s tense policier, “Mardaani,” Ms. Mukerji — as Shivani Shivaji Roy, a senior inspector in the Mumbai Crime Branch — directs her ferocity toward sex crimes, specifically child trafficking. When a girl dear to Shivani is kidnapped by pimps, Ms. Mukerji is again on a mission, but as a bona fide action star brimming with conviction. (In Hindi, “Mardaani” means independent or brave.)

Shivani’s investigative trail takes her to New Delhi as she follows an underworld network to a ruthless young man (Tahir Raj Bhasin) who taunts her by cellphone. (He goes by the name Walt, after Bryan Cranston’s character in “Breaking Bad.”) In her pursuit, Shivani pistol-whips perps, performs a flying tackle on a criminal astride a motorcycle, shoots an assassin at point-blank range and stabs an assailant through the hand. Her final confrontation with Walt is a sweaty aria of hand-to-hand martial arts combat.

You might call “Mardaani” a South Asian version of the Liam Neeson thriller “Taken.” But that’s too easy. “This is India,” Shivani says as she pummels Walt, before his young captives, almost sold as prostitutes, kick and stomp on his bloody body. In their rage, you can feel the weight of a nation.

  19. This Special Feature at IndiaFM may corroborate / validate Satyam’s point of view on ‘liked’ movies….

Box Office: Aamir Khan’s multiplier theory

“According to Aamir Khan, “To measure a film’s success, you need to see the weekend figures and compare it with the total collection. Like 3 Idiots did Rs. 40 crores on the weekend and the total business was Rs. 202 crores, so the weekend multiplied by 5, is the behavior of the film which is very good. That shows people have gone again and again to see the film. Jo film teen din mein 100 crore karein aur total mein 200 crore karein, then that film is not good.”

In this report while comparing the quality of movies, we introduce a Metric – Weekend to Lifetime Multiple for the 100 crore club. According to this comparison, a higher multiple indicates strong content and therefore longevity at cinemas, which in turn signifies footfalls being attracted in subsequent weeks.

From this analysis, the newer releases like Salman Khan’s Kick and Akshay Kumar’s Holiday that have been doing brisk business at the box-office come in at number 12 and 13 respectively in this list. While Shah Rukh Khan’s last hit Chennai Express slides down three slots to number 20.”

    • Ghajini was a special case .. when big movies were collapsing with less than double of weekend (OSO, Welcome, RNBDJ etc) .. Ghajini did relatively much better having weekend as good as others biggie of that time. You see those movies (OSO, Welcome, RNBDJ) are not even in list , when even likes of MNIK is there ..

      Like

      • There are a few challenges here to get past before using this, but the sentiment behind the theory is a good one. Some of these films are “higher” and “lower” than they should be because of when holidays came into play.
e.g. Kick/Dhoom3/Krrish 3 is “higher” than it should be because it got the benefit of a holiday AFTER its first weekend (thus inflating the factor) and I am pretty sure the Ghajini figure of 40 crore here is a 4 day figure thurs-sun so it is penalised as possibly others are too.
Also the standard flaw of crappy numbers e.g. Krrish3!

My guess if Titantic’s would be well above 20. It was an extra-ordinary grosser in that sense and will never be matched.

          Like

      • On contrary RNBDJ has one of the best multipliers even better than Ghajini. It did 25 crores over the first weekend and ended with 86 crores. A multiplier of 3.5 +. Even OSO had a very good multiplier better than MNIK etc. The list doesnt include these movies because they have concentrated on the 100 crore + grossers. And the second table is just a sample set of movies.

    Box Office India Trade Network

Mardaani had a good hold on Monday as it collected around 2.25 crore nett taking its four day total to over 16.50 crore nett. The drop from Friday is around 30-35% which is good though Friday collections were on the lower side.

The film has fared best in Mumbai and West Bengal. There have two major female orientated successes in recent times one of them being Kahaani which also outperformed in Mumbai and Wet Bengal. The other major female orientated success Queen did best in North.

It will be important for Mardaani to hold collections on the weekdays at around the 2 crore nett level which may enable to get enough screenings in week two to get around the 30 crore nett mark for lifetime business which would be a decent result.

The second week collections of the film will not only be less than the biggest grosser of the year Kick but also lower than films like Holiday – A Solider Is Never Off Duty and 2 States which are lower grossers than Singham Returns.

The film has grossed around 129 crore nett till now and after two weeks the business will be around 135 crore nett.

Singham Returns will add between 6-8 crore nett in its run after two weeks which means a finish of a little less than 145 crore nett which will make it amongst the top ten grossers of all time.

  30. Q. What has been the response and buzz to Happy New Year promo and what sort of opening can it get?
Ans. The response is fantastic but this is the case with every commercial big budget event film from Kick to Bang Bang to Happy New Year. Simply because there are so few of them. So for these films its not about the buzz but about the day. Kick had more hype than Singham Returns but Singham Returns had a better opening day as it was a holiday and collections remained good all through the day. The hype for Happy New Year is similar to Kick and Kick on pre Eid collected 25 crore nett and on a normal day that would have been around 30 crore. Happy New Year is coming on a huge holiday which can add 40% plus so it can be the first film to hit or maybe even cross 40 crore on day one assuming ticket prices will be raised from the rates of Kick.

It is banking heavily on Diwali solo option and this is where it may score but not a chance that this will beat any records with initials.
Director reputation is attached to a project these days and farah is at a low. Remember Singham also mattered due to Rohit Shetty.

Bang Bang may have done 40 cr or may still do 40 cr on Oct 2nd a national holiday but Kat is keeping herself reserved /low profile and coming out dull and HR is basically a pansy boy and seems to be doing Kites again….

      Like

      • Bang Bang will not do 40 crores. I am waiting to see the screen share between Bang Bang and Haider. Haider will at worst take away 1500 screens from Bang Bang. Even with 100% occupancy Bang Bang will just about touch 30 crores at max IMO if it has a screen count of 2500 to 3000.

On HNY I am not debating the merits of the movie. For Day 1 the merit of the movie does not matter. Even Ra-1 did 26 crores on Day 2 just because it was Diwali. Krrish 3 which was otherwise not a very liked movie did 34 crores on Day 4 just because it was Diwali.

I will put it this way, If Singham can touch 33 crores without any major buzz and no music to talk of and only because it was a holiday and a decent brand, then HNY can go past 40 crores when it is a sole release and a multi starrer with SRK in it and releasing on the biggest festival day in India when families are more than ready to splurge.
The music is yet to release and even with one chart buster 40 – 45 crores Day 1 is an assured return.

Amitabh Bachchan – 77 Movies (In lead roles) – 387 Crore Nett

Dharmendra – 109 Movies (In lead roles) – 235 Crore

    Vinod Khanna – 52 Movies – 127 Crore

    Rishi Kapoor – 44 Movies – 131 Crore

Need not to say .. Big grosser of Rishi and Vinod were movies where Amitabh was leading ..

Also biggest grosser of all four actors were Amitabh starrers.

And if research made on re-run collections .. Amitabh movies collections would be almost double up.

Average collection per movie (without adjustment) :

    Amitabh – 5.02 Crore

    Dharamendra – 2.15 Crore

    Rishi Kapoor – 2.97 Crore

that would be tom cruise’s first 100 mn grosser domestically outside of the MI films since 2005. I’m not counting Tropic Thunder because the guy was not even promoted. Although I absolutely loved him in it (didn’t even recognize him when at first glance)! It’s been a long time.
